Your Partner’s Snoring Is Not Something To Ignore PROVIDED BY MERIDIAN HEALTH

We often make light of the fact that our partner snores. I have heard friends wonder, only half joking, why it is that their partner who snores is always the first one to fall asleep. Snoring is no laughing matter and can be indicative of sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder, which not only compromises getting a good night’s sleep; but, can also have negative health consequences like weight gain and memory loss. There is evidence that sleep apnea leads to serious health risks; including high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, certain cancers and even sudden death. Sleep apnea occurs in all age groups and both men and women can be diagnosed with it. It is more common in men, it seems to be that sleep apnea is harder to detect in women. It is estimated that as many as 18 million Americans have sleep apnea. Adrian M. Pristas, M.D., board certified in pulmonary disease and sleep medicine, and part of the medical staff at Bayshore Community Hospital, recommends consulting with a sleep specialist if snoring is loud enough that it disrupts you or your partner’s sleep, if you notice that you seem to periodically choke or stop breathing while you are sleeping, if you wake up during the night feeling short of breath, or if you find yourself falling asleep at work or behind the wheel. The Meridian Center for Sleep Medicine at Bayshore Community Hospital is part of Meridian Neuroscience, and accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and is led by board certified sleep medicine physicians and staffed by a team of trained sleep technologists – who employ a comprehensive approach to diagnosing and treating sleep disorders, including sleep apnea. In addition, our dedicated nurse navigator is available to assist patients through the process from diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care, and education.
