Our flexible Diploma and Certificate of Advanced Studies (DAS and CAS) programmes in Health Care and Management are designed for health professionals who wish to deepen their knowledge of international public health and management. They are also well suited for career starters and career changers who aim to acquire the knowledge, skills and competences needed to work and lead in health management teams, particularly in low­income societies.

Our Course Offers in Health Care and Management

Our Health Care and Management courses provide you with the core competences to understand complex health challenges and address them through collaborative interventions. Besides building subject and methodological skills, the curriculum also enhances your social and personal competences required for leadership and management positions in the health sector.

You can complete the DAS in Health Care and Management: From Research to Implementation (DAS HCM) in 14 weeks on a full-time basis or in a modular way over 2 to 3 years. If you wish to study the DAS HCM course part-time, you must complete the CAS in Health Research and Interventions (which can be further subdivided into Module A: Concepts and Research Methods and Module B: Health Challenges and Responses) as well as the CAS in Health Systems and Management and the final oral exam. The DAS HCM also serves as the core course for the Master of Advances Studies (MAS) in International Health within the tropEd network.

Our CAS in Health Research and Interventions will enable you to

– Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of global health

– Critically apply the basic concepts, methods and tools for collecting, analysing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data

– Identify, understand and address the interrelated determinants of health and major health concerns of populations from a cross-sectoral and transdisciplinary perspective in low- and middle-income settings and at the global level

– Collaborate, communicate and lead in a multidisciplinary and multicultural

– Strategically plan and implement sustainable improvements to health systems, addressing inequities and considering social, legal and ethical responsibilities

– Critically reflect the role, decision-making process and impact of global health actorsthinking, finance and supply chain management, as well as digital health management, to give you the edge you need

Teaching and Learning Methods

To achieve an optimal learning experience, our diploma courses in Health Care and Management use a diverse spectrum of teaching methods, ranging from lectures and demonstrations to individual exercises, group work, laboratory practicals, tutorials and visits. Case studies are used to foster competences in systemic problem analysis, solution-oriented thinking and critical reflection on complex issues.

To achieve an optimal learning experience, HCM employs a diverse spectrum of educational methods, such as individual and group work, laboratory practical work, lectures, seminars, demonstrations, tutorials and visits, among other activities.

Lively participation is expected, including exchange of experiences, ideas and mutual learning among participants and facilitators. The course participants and teaching team reflect various disciplines, countries and experiences at local, national and international levels.

The course is open to participants from different backgrounds and countries. Participants are typically trained health professionals (medical doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists, veterinarians), though participants from other disciplines (e.g. business or social sciences) also contribute to class diversity.

Entry requirements

– Candidates must have a first professional qualification and at least two years of work experience

Admission Criteria

– English requirements: TOEFL paper 550/TOEFL computer 213/ TOEFL internet 79 – 80/IELTS 6.0 or native speaker or completed higher education in English (with written proof)

Course fees include a non-refundable registration fee of CHF 500 for the full course (14 weeks) and of CHF 200 for course modules.

Upon successful completion, participants are awarded the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) or Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) accredited by the University of Basel. The DAS HCM also serves as the mandatory core course for the Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in International Health within the tropEd network, an international network for higher education in international and global health.

At the end of the 14th week, upon successful completion of the programme, participants are awarded the Diploma of Advanced Studies, accredited by the University of Basel. HCM also serves as the core course for the tropEd network, the European Network for Education in International Health, and is mandatory for those who wish to pursue a Master in International Health (MIH).

Participants who only attend individual course modules (Module A or B) or who do not pass the examination will receive a certificate of participation from Swiss TPH.

The course fee has to be paid six weeks before the start of the course.

* The course fee does not include insurance, accommodation or other personal living costs during the stay. Participants are responsible for making these arrangefrom more than 70 countries

The 14-week HCM course fee is CHF 7,000*. This sum includes a nonrefunable registration fee of CHF 500.

The total fee must be paid six weeks before the start of the course. If cancellation is less than four weeks before the beginning of the course, an additional fee of CHF 1,000 will be charged.

Scholarships

A limited number of full or partial scholarships are reserved for full-time DAS HCM participants from resource-constrained countries who are working or aspiring to work in primary health care, public or global health, or district health services. Candidates must have a very good command of English and adequate academic or other training. The full scholarship includes the DAS HCM tuition fee, international return flight, insurance, and accommodation and living costs for the 14-weeks period.

Applications for all courses are normally accepted on a rolling basis. Except for scholarship applications, which will be considered after the application deadline.
