SUMMER WRAP-UP: STAY FIT THROUGH THE WINTER After a long, hot, and exciting summer break, our favorite season has finally come to an end. And even though stepping away from our vacation homes and heading back into the real world is the last thing we want to do, getting back into our routines is much more beneficial than we may think. Routines allow us to make time for important things such as exercise, social activities, and sleep. Following a structured plan helps us manage our time and prioritize what’s important, decreasing our stress levels and helping us build healthy habits.

An important part of everybody’s routine should be some form of physical activity, whether it be playing a sport, going for a hike, or swimming some laps. Lack of physical activity and excess calorie consumption are the biggest culprits of winter weight gain. As the weather gets colder, going outside and being active becomes harder and harder, and seasonal weight gain usually follows. Paired with the halloween candy, the Thanksgiving feasts, and all the delicious holiday cooking, weight gain is soon to follow. On average, people can gain up to 7 lbs over the course of the winter.

But what can be done to avoid this?

Exercise! The cold weather keeps us from going out as much as we do, leading to less tennis, golf, and strolls through the neighborhood. But a consistent exercise regimen, if prioritized in your weekly routine, will prevent this seasonal weight gain and the negative health effects associated with it.

Personal training is a great way to stay active in the winter. You hire a golf pro for your swing, a mechanic for your car, and a tutor for your kids. Why leave your fitness in your own hands? Our trainers have years of experience along with diverse backgrounds and multiple certifications, and are qualified to work with every type of population and help you reach all of your goals.

Schedule a session today and become a stronger, fitter, and healthier version of yourself!

While working out consistently is easier said than done, the Fitness Center is making it easier than ever to get active at Columbia. With a variety of group exercises classes to pick from, it’s easy to find one that you enjoy. Classes are also a fun way to make new friends and hold each other accountable. Check out the schedule on the Club website under the Fitness tab to find the perfect class for you!

Another option is to do the work on your own. While many people prefer this option, few know what to do when they start. Because of this, we now provide free exercise programs for you to follow. These programs, written by our trainers and catered to your own personal goals (golf, tennis, cardio, and strength) are each made up of 6 exercises and only take around 30 mins/workout to complete.

Regardless of the type of exercise you do, making it a priority should be your main goal for the winter. So find something you enjoy and bring a friend along with you! Whether you choose group exercise classes, personal training, or joining the gym, it’s always easier to get started with some company. So get a headstart on your new year’s resolutions and attend an exercise class with a friend, sign up for a personal training session with your significant other, or join the gym with a family member!

Columbia Gives Back C O M M U N I T Y S U P P O R T: B A C K T O S C H O O L

At the end of August, Columbia members and Foundation supporters gathered poolside to stuff and organize 175 backpacks for students at Don Bosco Cristo Rey and Washington School for Girls. Club members’ generous donations insured these middle- and high-schoolers were ready to learn! Educational Products, Inc. partnered in the effort and maximized donations received by providing discounted supplies in bulk. Thanks to all that participated!

Looking Back:TheThe L k g Back: 16 16th G This photo is of Columbia's 16th green circa 1921. Notice the undulations formed by various ridge lines and the strategically-placed mounding, sometimes referred to as “chocolate drops.”

These were notable design features frequently employed by Walter Travis. The best amateur of his day, Travis later became a prominent golf course architect. Remnants of Travis’ segmented greens formed by ridge lines are still evident around the course -- Lost Bunkers (#5), The Queen (#11) and Oasis (#18) are examples. And while "chocolate drop" mounding no longer exists on any Columbia greens, they do exist elsewhere. Look for them. Chocolate drops adjacent to the Road Runner (#6) tee boxes were recently added.

Why? A nod to Walter Travis.

The photo also reveals that the green at #16 was surrounded by a creek. Competitors at the 1921 U.S. Open had to negotiate this par-3 hole differently than we do today. The dams and ponds that exist today were added in 1937 for irrigation purposes. This installation was among the first irrigation systems on a golf course.
