Celebrating the Community Impact Fund’s Third Cycle of Awards

Spring 2024 represents the Foundation’s third year of competitive grantmaking through its Community Impact Fund (CIF). Each year since 2022, three small to mid-size DC-area non-profits have received $20,000 each to support their missions of empowerment in either education, health and wellness, veterans, family and housing or older adults. Lives have been changed, opportunities maximized and goals achieved through the CIF.

THE COLUMBIA

Mark Shriver, President of Don Bosco Cristo Rey, a Takoma Park college prep high school and a 2023 grantee, said it best: “The Columbia Foundation is helping our students in two crucial ways: building their resumes with real world internship experience and preparing them for academic success with school supplies and backpacks.”

Look for more details in Club communications about how to volunteer and get involved with the 2024 CIF grantee organizations! And don’t forget to make your voice heard when Club members are surveyed on their category preferences for 2025 CIF grantmaking. There will be plenty of chances to vote – both in person at the ballot boxes around the Club, or online via email outreach. Together, we support Columbia’s reputation as “the Club that gives back.”

Columbia’s Annual Fireworks Celebration: Introducing a New “Slimy” Tradition

Join fellow Club members in kicking off a new 4th of July tradition while also raising funds for the Columbia Foundation! What Club employee would your family most like to see “slimed” at the fireworks festivities? Choose from a set list of well-known and beloved employees and donate any amount to your preferred “slime bucket challenger.” Whichever employee generates the most money raised will get slimed. A sticky situation? Most definitely! But it’s all in the spirit of supporting the programs of the Columbia Foundation. More details will be announced as summer nears, but plan now to lean into this fun and friendly competition.

History in the Making at Columbia

The number of Columbia-affiliated members of the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame jumps to four in April with the induction of Bill “Coach” Strausbaugh, the Club’s Head Golf Professional for 27 years. Coach was a revered teacher and the literal embodiment of the “warm Columbia welcome.” The only person ever to have won three national PGA Awards spanning multiple decades, Coach was honored with the PGA Professional of the Year (1966), the Horton Smith Trophy (1983), and the National Teacher of the Year award (1992) in his lifetime.

Coach joins Fred McLeod, the 1908 U.S. Open champion and Columbia’s Head Golf Professional for 55 years, and Club members Perky Cullinane and Marty West in the ranks of the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame.

BOOST YOUR ENERGY with these Nutrition Tips

THERE are many reasons for feeling an energy slump some common reasons include stress, demanding schedules, lack of physical activity, and sometimes poor eating habits. One way to improve energy levels is by modifying eating habits. Read on to determine if your eating habits are helping or potentially hindering your energy levels. Better yet, try some of the following recommendations to give yourself a boost.

#2

EAT REGULARLY

# 1

BALANCE YOUR PLATE

A balanced meal includes foods from multiple food groups: whole grains, lean protein, fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, and fat-free or low-fat dairy. Balance out your plate with a variety of food groups for sustained energy. This method is helpful because it is a practical way to get a variety of macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, and fat). This works no matter what type of eating style you follow (plant-based, Mediterranean, heart-healthy, etc.).

Eating regularly (for most people that is every 3-5 hours) may help prevent unwise snacking or overeating at meals. If you only eat one to two meals a day, this may be an adjustment and require gradual change. As you learn how to fuel for success, remind yourself that you will feel better and be more focused when you have high-quality fuel in your system. This strategy will also help to minimize overeating, which can lead to that post-meal energy slump.

#3

USE SNACKS FOR A BOOST

The key to snacking is planning by bringing snacks with you or keeping snacks at the office or in your bag. If you are afraid this strategy will lead to excess snacking try prepackaged individual servings or a piece of fruit and pre-portioned nuts. Limit high-sugar snacks and typical comfort foods often consumed when feeling mentally depleted, such as chips, cookies, candy, etc. Ultra-processed foods may taste good at the moment but typically within an hour or two, lead you to look for something else to eat because these foods are not satiating. One reason for this is that blood sugar spikes after consuming refined and ultra-processed foods. If there is limited fiber or protein in the foods selected blood sugar will drop quickly.

• Snacks can be a way to help meet fiber and nutrient needs. Females should aim for 25-30g of fiber per day and males 35-40g of fiber per day.

• Incorporating fruits into snacks helps meet antioxidant needs (vitamins A, C, E).

• Additionally, snacks be balanced like meals, providing dietary fiber to provide lasting energy. Grab an apple and a handful of unsalted nuts; carrots and string cheese; or low-fat Greek yogurt and fresh berries. Keep in mind that snacks are intended to prevent you from getting overly hungry between meals, they are not intended to be the same size as a meal, in most scenarios.

10 | April | May | June

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

Everyone has different caloric and nutrient needs; however, here is a generic simple way to incorporate all these energy-boosting tips into your day.

7:00am-8:00am

BREAKFAST

1C oatmeal with fruit and nuts, 1 boiled egg, and 1C coffee

10:00am-11:00am SNACK

1/2 pita, veggies and hummus

12:00pm-1:00pm LUNCH BOWL

grilled chicken breast, lettuce, quinoa, chickpeas, hummus, and unlimited veggies, add a side of fruit

3:00pm-4:00pm SNACK fruit and yogurt

6:00pm-7:00pm DINNER

4-6 oz protein, sweet potato, 1C cooked veggies, 1 C milk (or alternative).

ABOUT

Caffeine

• Caffeine does not provide energy; it acts as a stimulant which may help you feel more alert.

• It is recommended to limit caffeine intake to 400mg/day.

• Caffeine has a half-life of 3-5 hours, meaning in 3-5 hours you will still have half the amount of caffeine in your system.

• Limit caffeine in the afternoon to minimize the chances of it interrupting your sleep.

• Stick with coffee or tea, not energy drinks because there are many other stimulants in energy drinks besides caffeine and when multiple stimulants and caffeine are mixed the risks for adverse events are much higher.

• Some people are slow caffeine responders and others are fast responders.

• If you are a slow caffeine responder caffeine takes longer to get through the system, and you may not feel caffeine benefits you.

• Slow responders may be more prone to jitters, and inability to focus; therefore, should limit caffeine intake.

JUNIOR TENNIS

Red ball clinics

Every Sunday, Session 3: 4/7-5/26 | Session 4: 6/9-8/11

12:00pm-12:45pm, 1:00pm-1:45pm & 4:00-4:45pm

Red tennis is named after the red felt balls that are used for that stage. Red tennis balls bounce lower and move more slowly through the air, giving beginning players a chance to set up and take a good swing at the ball.

Session 3: 4/7-5/26 is $160 per registrant (ages 3-6, 8 weeks)

Session 4: 6/9-8/11 is $180 per registrant (ages 3-6, 9 weeks)

Orange ball clinics

Every Sunday, Session 3: 4/7-5/26 | Session 4: 6/9-8/11

2:00pm-3:00pm

Once comfortable at the red level, players graduate to playing at the orange level. Orange felt balls bounce higher and move faster than the Red felt balls but lower and slower than the green ball.

Session 3: 4/7-5/26 is $225 per registrant (ages 3-6, 8 weeks)

Session 4: 6/9-8/11 is $250 per registrant (ages 3-6, 9 weeks)

Green dot ball

Every Sunday, Session 3: 4/7-5/26 | Session 4: 6/9-8/11

3:00pm-4:00pm

The green ball is very similar to the traditional yellow ball but with a slightly lower compression, so it rebounds lower off the court after a bounce.

Session 3: 4/7-5/26 is $225 per registrant (ages 3-6, 8 weeks)

Session 4: 6/9-8/11 is $250 per registrant (ages 3-6, 9 weeks)

Junior Ladder Competition
