Greetings from Colorado Mesa University Tech (CMU Tech) and welcome to the Lifelong Learning and Workplace Education program brought to you by the Community Education Center.

What’s inside?

Inside this Summer 2025 edition of CMU Tech’s Community Education Center brochure, we have a large selection of classes/workshops for personal and professional growth that are designed for lifelong learning around many fun topics. We invite you to experience the fun and excitement of exploring something new or enhancing your existing skills.

These classes are held in two locations this Spring. Most classes will be held at the CMU Tech Bishop campus at 2508 Blichmann Ave, Grand Junction, CO 81505. If noted near the description, some classes will be held in the new Clifton Community Center at 3270 D ½ Rd in Clifton. Overall, there are nearly 200 classes to choose from.

Fully Online

These are interactive courses that you can take entirely online. Fully Online courses have the option to be Instructor Led, with a specific start date and class schedule, or Self-Paced, where you can begin the course at any time and work at your own pace. We have over 700 online lifelong learning classes through our partnership with Ed2go, online medical career classes through our partner Career Step and online Real Estate classes with our partner the CE shop.

AGRICULTURE

Talking To Your Plants Isn’t Weird

Did you know plants have brains? Lungs? Stomachs? Have your plants literally been trying to tell you something? Using microscopes and magnifying glasses, see for yourself the organs of plants, learn the exciting stories of how they were discovered, and understand how to be a better home gardener, or just take care of your houseplants better. Students will understand plant foraging, reproductive and other behavior, and the reasons these are so similar to animal behaviors.

Basics of Drawing

Drawing basics are key to developing your creative style. This course will explore the basics of art foundation in an approachable way. Understanding form, line, perspective, anatomy, composition, and values will help build a strong foundation of artistic expression. The techniques of pencil and charcoal, as well as other basic tools can be used to create an exciting drawing experience. Come learn how!

Excel, Microsoft’s powerful spreadsheet software, is the most widely used program to handle this task. Most workplaces require that new employees have a basic level of understanding of Microsoft Excel. You will learn numerous shortcuts to quickly and efficiently set up worksheets. You will also learn how to use the function wizard to calculate statistics, future values, and more. In addition, you will get tips on sorting and analyzing data, creating three-dimensional workbooks, and automating

This series combines three Microsoft Excel courses, to give you a thorough understanding of how to use their software to supplement your career. Whole Food Plant Based Cooking

Discover the health benefits and the joy that is whole-food, plant-based cooking. FIREARMS TRAINING AND SAFETY

Basic Pistol/ CCW Firearms

“This course is ideal for beginners, and a refresher for those shooters who want to improve their skills. This course teaches knowledge, skills, and attitude for safely owning and operating a handgun. Taught by NRA certified Instructors, who are Verified by the Mesa County Sheriff as Colorado CCW instructors, The class includes six-hour with hands-on classroom workshop on safe pistol operation, the fundamentals of effective pistol shooting, ammunition knowledge, Federal and Colorado gun laws and the legal principles of self-defense. The class also includes threehours of coached shooting on the OMGC range. This course fulfills the new Colorado Concealed Carry training requirements and is verified by the Mesa County Sheriff for obtaining a Concealed Handgun Permit.”

Beginning Reloading Metallic Cartridges

Reloading rifle and pistol cartridges are an enjoyable and safe pastime. There are many good reasons why people reload their own ammunition. In this course, participants will learn the basics of reloading procedures; information about choosing powders, primers, and bullets; different types of reloading equipment and their proper setup and operation, as well as trouble shooting when things don’t go as expected. The last class session will be devoted to actual reloading of cartridges. This is an NRA Certificate course. There is a materials fee to cover an NRA book and other materials.

Intermediate Reloading Metallic Cartridges

This course will go beyond the Beginning Ammunition Reloading course to cover topics such as experimentation, using bullet comparators to get precise measurements of your rounds, measuring chamber, adjusting seating/ crimping dies to your gun’s chamber, optimal bullet seating, necking up/down, minimizing runout, and bullet concentricity.

Colorado Concealed Weapons Class

A class for beginner to the advanced, you will learn the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to carry a concealed handgun. This class includes training on baisc pistol operation and presents scenaries for surviving active shootersituations. This is a thinking person’s class, essential range time is included, and this class qualifies for Colorado Concealed Carry License. This instructor is certified as: Avanced Certified Pistol, Certified Home Firearm Safety, Certified Refuse To Be A Victim, Certified Rifle, Certified Shotgun, NRA CCCW Instructor, Personal Protection in the Home, Personal Protection Outside the Home, a Chief range safety officer and training counselor.

Whether you’re getting ready to travel or just curious about French culture, this program is designed to teach you the basics of the French language through interactive and engaging lessons. MUSIC

Beginning Guitar 1

This class is intended for those who have never played guitar or who have been frustrated trying to learn. This class will cover basics of guitar, concentrating on rhythm and a few simple songs. We will cover topics including relaxing, holding a pick and pick direction, tuning, beginning chords, rhythm and playing in time, how to listen and what to listen for, left- and right-hand technique and coordination, a simple song or two, how to practice, and playing with other musicians. Students should have access to a guitar to use in class and for practice, a 3-ring binder, capo and an electronic tuner. A music stand is not required but can come in handy.

Beginning Keyboard

Learning the keyboard is a great foundation for learning other instruments in the future. This class will cover scales, chords, melody lines and baselines. Students will learn song accompaniment and how to improvise over wellknown songs, so you’ll be able to play songs you know and love! Please bring your keyboard to class.

Beginning Music Reading for Guitar

Beginning Music Reading, will teach the student to identify and play notes of written music(especially melodies), play rhythms, and identify and play chord symbols. The course will open many musical doors for the guitarist who needs to develop reading -skills.

Beginning Violin

This course is for those who are new to playing the violin, and for those who used to play and want to brush up on their basic technique. We will cover the important basics of playing the violin, including bow grip and movement, left hand fingering, and basic music reading. Learning these basic techniques will allow you to play many different styles of music! Begin your journey to the lifelong enjoyment of violin playing!

Rhythm Guitar

Are you one of those guitar players who’s mastered a few chords but can’t seem to get your right hand to work? Or perhaps you’ve been playing for a while, but good timing seems to elude you? Then this might be the class for you! In Rhythm Guitar 1, we will be learning the basic rudiments necessary to be a good rhythm player, including counting, note duration, learning to “feel” the beat as you play, strumming, pick control, palm muting, and improving chord transition time. To demonstrate these rudiments, we will use a few popular songs as examples. This is a beginner-level class, but intermediate players who struggle with timing and/or strumming might benefit as well. Students should have access to a guitar to use in class and for practice, a 3-ring binder, capo and an electronic tuner. A music stand is not required but can come in handy.

Ukulele Club Style

Come learn to play different songs in various styles and sing along while playing. The first half of the class will be going over the lesson for that day, and the last part of the class will be reviewing the lesson and playing songs. This class is for anyone who wants to learn to play the Ukulele no experience needed. Please bring your ukulele to class.

PERSONAL FINANCE

Beginning Stock Market Investing for Fun and Profit

Understanding how the stock market works is important, whether you have a retirement account with your employer, or want to invest for a living. Using basic skills like addition and subtraction, the principles of economics are learned through guided practice in common trading and investing methods. Students learn to then apply these basic math skills to undertake sophisticated economic analysis and gain the ability to estimate current values of a stock and anticipate its future value too. Includes a workshop for the student to plan their portfolio.

Advanced Stock Trading: for Work and Profit

Need a side hustle, or a full time job? Trading is easy enough to do while working full time and taking care of your family. With little more than the skills of addition and subtraction, you will be prepared to not only make your very first successful trade - but every trade after that one. Students learn how to use Google Sheets to accurately estimate prices in prognostication, and using only the basic arithmetic skills, learn why and how the scientific methods of economics work. Students are also introduced to self-employment tax implications, start up funding, how to use (and not to use) Artificial Intelligence in trading and investing, and are exposed to unusual and creative strategies.

The two day option includes fun workshops and projects to guide the students as they make their first trades and establish their portfolio, as well as supplementary materials and lessons designed to assist the student in beginning their career as a stock trader.

Build Your Family’s Business Empire: Love, Power and Survival in Grand Junction

Leveraging micro cooperatives, private banking, and mutual support associations reliable conglomerates, fuel the rapid expansion and growth of your family business, transforming a legacy that will last the generations.

Building upon skills from the first two classes, students will learn the necessary economic skills for financial planning in a workshop case study to experimentally stretch what would be a normally catastrophically low retirement nest egg into a bright future - for themselves, and their family too. Leverage the power of economics and finance - as well as tools like insurance, annuities, stocks, bonds, commodities and ETF’s, to achieve your dreams - whether those dreams lead you to far away beaches, or along the shady streets of our own City of Grand Junction.

Option 4: Today’s economic challenges are formidable: with sky-high inflation, a recession threatening to become a depression, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. With only basic skills in arithmetic required, students will learn how to apply advanced theories of economics and finance to navigate the shifting tides of fortune, and make for themselves and their loved ones a brighter future.

How to Sell Anything

Whether you get nervous talking to others or just don’t know how to describe your products or services online, it simply doesn’t matter how good your product or service is if you cannot sell it. And even bad products and services can bring a profit if sold right! Students will learn how to sell using the internet, with websites and on marketplacesas well as in person. Honing old-time skills while becoming familiar with new technologies like AI, students are exposed to game theory to understand the psychology of why sales work - and how to integrate sales into any business plan. Skills in customer service, bargaining, negotiation and auction game theory are used by students to develop their own sales pitch, from ad to spiel to close.

Building a website doesn’t have to be hard—or expensive. Non-profit and not-for-profit business has never been more important! Making money as a visual or performing artist is easier than you’d think: the basics of business and marketing are introduced in a fun, friendly and useful way with specific attention paid to the unique challenges and opportunities of the art world. Students are assisted in developing a business plan, marketing plan, website plan, and skills in website building, bookkeeping and record keeping, and introduced to special taxation considerations for artists, as well as legal organization, and provided the other basic skills necessary to succeed. Start Your Own Urban Farming Business

Whether you own acreage or an apartment, starting an urban farm can be both profitable and fun. And if you live in suburbia? The State of Colorado provides considerable protection and support to urban farmers - especially those with an HOA. In this class, students are introduced to current legislation and taxation affecting urban farmers, familiarized with urban farming techniques, and guided through the development of a successful business plan and marketing plan, and given the practical business skills required to develop their love for animals, pets, vegetables, fruits, bees, fish, mushrooms, and other produce into a side hustle, and ultimately into a fully functioning business.

Full Send Golf Academy offers middle school and high school students a practical way to learn golf, with weekly lessons in driving, chipping, putting, and easy strategies for navigating the course.
