Road less traveled is less traveled for a reason Making it to the NBA is hard and succeeding in the NBA is even harder. For regular people, the thought of making it to the league is nothing more than a thought. However, what happens when you have NBA-level talent, and have trouble making it to the league? Having NBA-level talent, and not making it to the league right after college is a reality that many have to face. I have the privilege of knowing two players that have NBA-level talent, but are not in the NBA, yet. DJ Stephens a native of Harker Heights, had a breakout season in 2013 with the University of Memphis, but winning Dunk of the Year in 2012 really propelled him into the national spotlight. The impact that Stephens had on the court won’t be conveyed well by looking at his stats. His athleticism was on display night after night, but his ability to guard various positions flew under the radar, as did
Still on the Bench By STEVE BENKO Reporter
his improved offensive game. At the NBA Draft Combine, Stephens had a 40inch vertical, which was a new record. At this point Stephens had national recognition, talent and elite athleticism but even in the later part of the draft, he was passed on. Stephens signed a 10day contract with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2014 but was released. He signed a training camp contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the summer of 2015, but was subsequently cut, and is now with the DLeague affiliate, Canton Charge. Wesley Witherspoon, a teammate of Stephens in college was a top ranked small forward coming out of high school. Witherspoon had a solid college career, but since graduating has
played professional basketball overseas. There is money to be made overseas, but nowhere near the amount of money that can be made in the NBA. Granted, both Witherspoon and Stephens play the game because they love the game, it’s not fair that there are players in the NBA that have considerably less talent but also have a NBA roster spot, but that might just be my opinion, I’m biased. The NBA is heavily political. There are players that sit on the bench the entire season and don’t see more than five minutes of playing time. These are just two examples of NBA hopefuls that been relegated to
the D-League or forced to play overseas. There are a lot of countries with professional basketball teams and professional basketball players with NBA-level talent but it’s hard to compete with the NBA itself. Hundreds of D-1 or D-2 players leave college every year with hopes of following in the path of a player similar to their situation that made it to the NBA. More than likely, it’s a very humbling experience. The path to the NBA for everyone is different. In this case, the road less traveled goes to those that have the talent, but also have a lot of luck.

Hartley kills at Southeastern BARBARA BOXLEITNER Citizen Correspondent
Parrie Hartley has taken well to a new position for the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s volleyball team. The junior out of Columbus High School has been playing right side hitter as well as outside hitter for the 13-17 squad. She filled a spot when the starting right side hitter suffered an injury. “Right side is more blocking,” she said. She didn’t enter the position blindly, though, for she played some right side during the spring. “I got a feel of it,” said Hartley, who
last year was first on the team in service aces, second in kills and third in digs. The 5-foot-10 Hartley enters the Nov. 20-22 Southland Conference tournament having started 11 of 28 matches. She is third on the team in kills and points and fourth in blocks. She had a season-high 17 kills against Troy
University during September and has reached double figures in kills seven more times. She had a season-high 14 digs against Northwestern State University. “She always seemed to me to be a natural right side hitter,” head volleyball coach Jim Smoot said. “She’s doing opposite of what she had
been doing. She’s really adapted well to that.” Hartley said she thought her performance in a 3-1 win over Stephen F. Austin University was her all-around best this season. She had 13 kills, 11 digs and two set assists. “I had to play front row and back row,” she said. “It was a good team effort.” She has been working most on her defense, especially moving laterally and reading plays. “I’m still working on where to read the hitter,” she said, noting that her blocking will improve from that.
