« COLUMBUS The Columbus High School Cardinals traveled to Giddings Friday, September 18. Although it was a valiant effort, the Columbus Cardinals took a 69-31 loss to the Giddings Buffaloes. Columbus had sloppy play that led to Giddings’ touchdowns. Friday’s loss isn’t a good representation of Columbus’ defense, but their offense needs

Shorter’s potential is there, if his raw talent can be developed, there’s no telling how good he can be for Columbus. Brazos handles Rice in Cooper’s absence STEVE BENKO reporter@coloradocountycitizen.com

« ALTAIR The Rice Raiders took on the Brazos Cougars at home Friday, September 18. Both Rice and Brazos was very chippy from the first quarter, in a very aggressive game. Rice was without star running back, Marcus Cooper. Cooper suited up, but didn’t play as he was sidelined with a knee injury. Junior Daniel Cantu was lights out, as he was able to connect with five different receivers. Junior Jaquarry Allen was Cantu’s favorite target. Cantu’s elusiveness, and ability to make

throws outside of the pocket is what kept Rice alive for much of the game. Senior Bruno Castillo led Rice, with 11 tackles, and fellow senior Ashton Pavlu tallied ten. Unfortunately, Rice was handed a 41-22 defeat, and moved to 1-3 on the season.

Raider Stats Daniel Cantu - 14-21 – 240 passing yards – 2 TD Hunter Adkins 15 carries – 85 rushing yards – 1 TD Jaquarry Allen – 92 receiving yards Bruno Castillo – 11 tackles Ashton Pavlu – 10 tackles

Covering my first major league baseball game I’ve written for BaseballEssential.com for a little over a year. Baseball Essential is a baseball website, through the Fox Sports digital network. In that time, I have had the opportunity to interview a famous MLB agent, and the director of a major baseball documentary. I covered the Scranton/ Wilkes Barre RailRiders in Scranton, PA for a little over a month. Covering the RailRiders, I had the opportunity to interview members of the New York Yankees that were in town on rehab assignments. However, until recently, I had never covered a Major League game as a credentialed member of media. The director of media relations for Baseball Essential, Gershon Rabinowitz informed me, the Houston Astros approved my credential request September 16. I was going to be covering my first Major League Baseball game. The game was September 19; the Oakland Athletics were in town to face the Astros. I can’t really explain the feeling of obtaining my first credential, and walking up to the press box of a major league organization. I made my way to the field to watch batting practice, I stood there from right behind the batting cage, and looked

Still on the Bench By STEVE BENKO Reporter

out at the entire park. The atmosphere at Minute Maid was electric; I was captivated by the size of it. Listening to conversations of fans with players was something I enjoyed. I watched A’s catcher Stephen Vogt introduce himself to a young fan too shy to introduce himself. I listened to A’s outfielder Josh Reddick sit and talk to fans for 20 minutes, one of the conversations was about how his mother wanted him to get married. There were many firsts that day for me, but I will never forget the feeling of sitting in the box, interacting with fans and MLB players. The feeling I got when I stood on the field and looked out at Minute Maid Park, was indescribable; it was various emotions all rolled into one. I look forward to covering more games for Houston, but there is something about covering my first game as a member of media that made me realize why I started writing in the first place—my aspirations to do things I only saw on television.
