T

his year, the Texas Minirod Tractor Pullers Association will be pulling Saturday at 3:00 pm. This is a tractor pull like you have never seen before! The Texas Minirod show consists of wide variety of tractors. There is every kind of machine you can think of, from stock garden tractors to minirod tractors with as much as 1800 horsepower. Some look like tractors, while some look more like mini dragsters. This is very fast-paced entertainment with each tractor only taking a matter of seconds to make their attempt at pulling a weight transfer sled down a three hundred foot track. Texas Minirod Tractor Pullers Association is based out of Flatonia, Texas. The members are from all

over this part of Texas, but as far away as Louisiana. The club pulls all over central and south Texas. Many of their pulls are put on along with antique tractor pulls, Monster Truck shows, and truck pulls. The club also puts on an annual show for the Wounded Warrior Program as well as a pull at an annual Cystic Fibrosis benefit. Participants must be members of the club, but if you have a tractor that meets the TMTPA rules, there are provisions for a one-day membership. All rules, as well as classes can be found at www.tmtpa.com. Minirod pulling is something new to this area, but most people that see it want to see it again, so come out to the fair to enjoy the show!

T

he Colorado County Fair Pen of Three Heifers contest is designed to provide an opportunity for the personal growth and development of youth exhibitors through the ownership, care and showing of commercial beef heifers. Members of Colorado County 4-H, FFA and Jr. FFA clubs are eligible to take part in the contest. The program has four key parts: record keeping, public speaking, a written examination and grading of cattle. Each program part is judged by a set of judges knowledgeable in that area.

The Champion Overall Pen of Three is the total combined score from each section with maximum scores possible of Record Book worth 15 points, Public Speaking 35 points, Examination 20 points and Grading of the Cattle 30 points. The record-keeping component includes physical recording of project information, analysis of data and presentation of a record book. The exhibitor describes their project and answers questions about their heifers and beef animal husbandry in the public speaking part of the contest.

Exam questions are related to the beef industry. The exhibition of the project at the Fair shows the results of the ownership, selection and care given by the exhibitor to their beef heifers. Adults (family and others) play an important role as they guide and assist the exhibitors with their project. This interaction strengthens family bonds and provides an opportunity to meet and gain knowledge from a wider range of people than might otherwise occur. The heifers are required to be purchased in Colorado or adjoining counties

and are sold during the Fair’s Junior Sale. This aspect of the project encourages the improvement of local beef herds. There will be 11 Pen of Three entries at this year’s Fair. Judging is scheduled for at 9 a.m. Friday Sept. 25, and the projects will be offered for sale Saturday, Sept. 26, beginning at 1 p.m. The heifers are suitable replacement heifers in commercial beef operations. Come meet these young people with an interest in the beef cattle industry and support them at the sale.

T

he Fair Board encourages all to visit the Exhibit Hall/ Fine Arts Building and enjoy over 1,000 drawings and other anticipated artworks created by local school children and artists of all ages that will be exhibited at the 2015 Colorado County Fair. The Western Art exhibit featuring cowboys and cowgirls, horses, rodeo and circus scenes, landscapes, sunsets and other western-themed pieces will be hung for viewing at this year’s fair. Western Art entrants may also be inspired by the fair’s 2015 theme “Country Pride, County Wide.” The Western Art and Fine Art exhibitions and judging at the Colorado County Fair began in 1979 to highlight the arts in the community. County fairs feature many areas, and the arts is

an area that allows people who may not directly participate in agriculture or livestock events to be involved in the fair. The Western Art division is for school age children who live in Colorado County, while the Fine Art division is for all Colorado County residents. The rules and guidelines for the Western Art division are similar to those of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Program, after which our fair’s program was fashioned. Western Art entries must be western themed. All school districts in Colorado County are invited to submit entries. Each Western Art entry is awarded a blue, red or white ribbon. Several finalist ribbons are awarded in each of the three divisions: Elementary (pre-

w e N ROTARY CUTTER

K through fifth grade), Junior (sixth through eighth grades) and Senior (ninth through twelfth grades). Best of Show and Reserve Best of Show winners are selected from the finalists in each division. The Fine Art division is open to all ages, and unlike the Western Art division, the artwork may depict any subject. For Fine Art entries, a pre-entry card must be submitted. Each division is judged separately, with paintings and drawings separate from sculptures and constructions. Please see the white Fine Arts and Special Events catalog for more details on both the Fine Art and Western Art shows. A digital copy of the catalog is also available on the fair’s website at coloradocountyfair.org under the Entertainment tab; click on

Homemaking, Arts & Parade. Please note that all Western Art and Fine Art entries will be accepted in the Exhibit Hall/Fine Arts Building at the Colorado County Fairgrounds Tuesday, September 22, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. No late entries will be eligible for judging. The art will be judged Wednesday morning and be displayed for public viewing beginning Thursday. The art will remain on display through Sunday afternoon. Photographs of Best of Show and Reserve Best of Show winners in all sections will be taken at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 27. If you have questions or would like more information, please call Melissa Kilpatrick at (713) 444-9059 (Western Art) or Deborah Petrosky at (979) 7323564.

W

hen it comes to down ’n’ dirty roots ’n’ roll, nobody in Americana music today does it better than Ray Wylie Hubbard. After riding a decade-long career resurgence into the national spotlight with 2012’s acclaimed The Grifter’s Hymnal and his first ever appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman, the iconoclastic Texas

songwriter is back to continue his hot streak with The Ruffian’s Misfortune — his 16th album. From his humble beginnings as an Oklahoma folkie in the ’60s to his wild ride through the ’70s progressive country movement, and onward through the honky-tonk fog of the ’80s to his sobriety-empowered comeback as a songwriter’s songwriter in the ’90s, Hubbard was al-

ready a bona fide legend by the time he found his groove right at the turn of the century. That’s when he finally felt confident enough in his guitar playing to dive headlong into his own inimitable take on the blues, a form he’d admired but steered clear of for decades, thinking its mysteries were beyond his grasp as a basic chord strummer.

R

Kevin Fowler

eflection is the catalyst to coming full circle. Texas country singer-songwriter Kevin Fowler took a couple years to take stock of his artistic career, launch his own record label, then write and record How Country Are Ya? the oldfashioned way. How Country Are Ya?, Fowler’s seventh studio album and his first for Kevin Fowler Records in a joint venture with Nashville’s Thirty Tigers, is the good-timing, tradition-steeped and honky-tonk-stomping Amarillo native’s return to basics. A year in the making, the album features 15 fresh tunes (he wrote all except the raucous instrumental Mousturdonus) and was produced by Ken Tondre, Fowler’s drummer, at Tondre’s The Compound Recording Studio in Austin. One of the most potent songs on How Country Are Ya? is Panhandle Poorboy, a completely autobiographical piece that’s the centerpiece of Fowler’s mindset during the album’s creation. “The last couple of records have been on Nashville record labels,” Fowler said, referring to 2007’s Bring It On, released on Equity Music Group, and 2011’s Chippin’ Away, released on Average Joe’s Entertainment. “But this one is on my own label with my buddies like we used to make records. I wanted to feel right at home, go back to the well, and not get into any outside influences. I really felt like I wanted to make music closer to all my anthems that people scream along to at shows.” How Country Are Ya? is also chock full of Texas-centric collaborations. The first single, How Country Are Ya?, is quintessential Fowler. The song crackles with all the beer joint energy that characterizes every creative fiber of Kevin Fowler. The message behind each lyric, each guitar lick, and each melody is the live

show. Fowler has earned his reputation as one of the most ampedup concert performers to emerge from the modern day Texas country movement. For those that have experienced Fowler onstage, they know he brings unbridled musical muscle to the platform. Backed by his trusty band he’s a dynamo – cracking jokes, hitting high notes, strumming his guitar and putting each of his fans in two-stepping mode. “From day one I realized I couldn’t control what radio played and what video channels played, but the one thing I could control every night was the live show,” Fowler said. “The musicians want to be there, the fans want to be there and I want to be there. People can listen to the CDs at home. But if they come to the shows they are ready to have a good time for an hour-and-a-half, forget about their problems and forget about work on Monday.” Pretty much any city in Texas belongs to Fowler, but

At the Pavillion Saturday, September 26 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. h he will immediately point out that he iis quickly growing in Oklahoma and tthroughout the Midwest, and up to C Chicago. For an independent artist like F Fowler, social media is crucial to c career growth and sustainment. He k knows that social media puts bodies in concert seats and creates an imperative rapport with his fans. It is p tthe technological age way for artists tto connect with admirers. “Social media is the biggest part,” F Fowler said. “Social media is king. It h has impacted my career as signific cantly as radio. Twenty years ago the o only tool you really had was Kinkos tto make flyers. This is the biggest p piece of the puzzle especially for u us now since we don’t have a lot of radio airplay. I can reach my target audience big time now.” But naturally even the fiercest honky-tonker needs down time. Fowler comes from a long line of hunters and fishermen. How thick is the hunting and fishing blood in Fowler’s veins? “I was born in May and in September of that year I went on my first hunting trip. My dad was a huge bowhunter. I still go bowhunting. That is what we did as a family. We also went on fishing trips every spring break. That made me who I am. It was camping in Colorado, bow hunting in the fall and fishing every spring break.” “I would have never in a million years thought the Texas music scene would grow to what it is now,” a proud Fowler said. “I was lucky enough to have been there since the inception. I feel proud to have played a part in establishing the scene, in making it what it is. We fought a lot of battles and kicked a lot of doors down. Now we are having fun spreading it town by town outside of Texas, just the way we did inside the home state. | 27

Contestants Wanted for the King Arthur Flour Sponsored Baking Contests at the Fair

H

ome bakers it is time to pull your King Arthur Flour from your cupboards and fire up your ovens – your creativity and skill could earn you some great prizes during this year’s baking contests at the Colorado County Fair, being held September 24-27. “King Arthur Flour is America’s oldest flour company. We have been providing premier flour, baking ingredients, and instruction for the last 225 years,” said Julie Christopher, Program Manager with the company. “It is our mission to support and inspire bakers worldwide and we could not be

more excited to sponsor these contests.” Entry forms may be submitted at the Colorado County Extension Office now through September 11. The categories include made from

scratch cakes, cookies, pies, quick breads, yeast breads, bread machine yeast breads, miscellaneous baked items and Diabetic items from the pre-mentioned categories. These will be judged

on appearance (uniformity, color, shape), texture (appropriate for each item), and taste. Having the best quality ingredients produces the best and most consistent baked goods, so contes-

tants must use King Arthur Flour in their recipes. Prizes are provided by King Arthur Flour and include gift cards to kingarthurflour.com, cookbooks, baking pans and ribbons. “This will be the sixth year that King Arthur Flour has supported the Colorado County Fair”, said Janis Pfeffer, Colorado County Extension Agent-Family & Consumer Sciences. “They approached us in 2010 offering to sponsor this contest and have been with us every year since.” For more information about the Colorado County Fair and complete contest rules, please visit coloradocountyfair.org.

CCFA Academic Rodeo

he Garwood Lions Club has challenged our Colorado County students for a number of years and will do so one more time this year in the Academic Rodeo. The students perform as a team and are asked a variety of questions. The Academic Rodeo is open for junior high and high school students. Last year, the Creative Homemaking Building hosted the rodeo, and everyone enjoyed the cool air conditioning. We are grateful that the Creative Homemaking Building will once again host the Academic Rodeo for 2015. Those of us able to listen and mentally answer the questions last year learned new facts and were refreshed on information we had “stored away.” This year the Academic Rodeo will take place Friday, Sept. 25 at 9 a.m.

Colorado County Junior Fair Board to serve as Parade Marshals for Parade

D

Saturday, September 26, 2015

E

ntries are being sought for the 37th Annual Colorado County Fair parade to take place Saturday, September 26 starting at 10 a.m. in downtown Columbus. The theme for the 2015 parade is “Country Pride, Country Wide.” Parade line-up starts at 8 a.m. Judging begins at 9 a.m., and the parade kicks off at 10 a.m. First, second and third place ribbons will be given in the following categories: Antique Vehicle, Float, Equestrian, Commercial, Service Organization, Educational and Marching/Twirling. Any of these entries may be themed, but it is not a requirement. Ribbons will also be awarded for Most Outstanding Overall Entry and Best Themed Entry. Entry forms have been mailed to former parade participants. If you have not received an entry form in the mail, you may pick one up in Columbus at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce office at 425 Spring Street, The First State Bank at 420 Walnut, or Potter’s Western Store at 2106 Hwy. 71. Entry forms and additional information are available on the Fair’s website, www.coloradocountyfair.org, under the Homemaking and Arts tab or by calling Parade Chairmen Melissa Kilpatrick at 979-732-8781. The deadline to enter the parade is Wednesday, September 23. Please consider being a part of the 37th Annual Colorado County Fair Parade, whether as a participant or observer!

id you know that there is a group of young people who make up a vital part of what the Colorado County Fair does? There is, and it is called the Colorado County Junior Fair Board. This year the Board of Directors of the Colorado County Fair is proud to honor the Junior Fair Board as our 2015 Parade Marshals. The Fair’s ideals are Heritage, Agriculture and Service, and what more appropriate way to personify these ideals than by focusing on a group of Colorado County youth who embody them. We salute you, Colorado County Junior Fair Board! Junior Fair Board members come from the three high schools in Colorado County and also include home schooled students. They are high school aged and are crucial to the Fair. Students in grades 9 – 12 become Junior Fair Board members by filling out and submitting an application which is available online on the Fair’s website. The members serve terms which start August 1 and continue until June 1 of the following year. Please see the article on page 8 of this magazine for information about each person serving on this year’s Junior Fair Board. The members of the Junior Fair Board do many things for the Fair. They participate in the Fair’s annual Ragin’ Cajun Crawfish Boil by helping set up for it, making desserts, providing water and iced tea, serving the attendees, holding a silent auction to raise scholarship funds, and cleaning up at the end of the event. The Junior Fair Board holds a fall fundraiser, which is an order-ahead to-go meal in Columbus, to

raise money for scholarships for the seniors in the group. Before, during and after each year’s Fair, the Junior Fair Board provides assistance in many ways. Members of the Junior Fair Board set up the stage for the pageant. They help during the livestock shows and haul supplies to the livestock arena for individual livestock shows. During the sale on Saturday, they serve cold beverages to buyers and others present at the sale. The group’s members also help clean the Fairgrounds before and after the Fair, help organize Home Economic exhibits and Western and Fine art, hang signs where needed, raise the flags on Thursday, work the gates, run errands, hand out ribbons, and assist committeemen as needed. They also help set up the Hospitality Room for Saturday. Most importantly, they are ambassadors who provide guidance and give directions and assistance to those visiting our Fairgrounds, and they also answer visitors’ general questions. They are a very valuable asset who often are overlooked, and the Fair Board decided it was high time to shine the light on these hard-working and responsible youth of our county. Having a successful group like the Junior Fair Board also involves adult supervision and leadership. The current leader of the Junior Fair Board is Katie Kunz. Past leaders have been Pam Renz, Sandra Robinson, Lora Weishuhn, Kaylee Brune and Gail Gertson. All of these women have stepped up and given this group their time, talents, wisdom and know-how and have shared these assets

with the many Junior Fair Board members over the 26year existence of the group. Because of their dedication, the Fair Board also salutes and thanks these inspiring Junior Fair Board leaders. By selecting the Junior Fair Board as Parade Marshals this year, the Fair takes this opportunity to thank all the members of this group, past and present. Thank you for inspiring other young people to serve their community. Each member deserves recognition and praise for his or her hard work on behalf of the Fair and, by extension, on behalf of all the youth of our county. The Colorado County Junior Fair Board will lead the 37th Annual Colorado County Fair Parade as Parade Marshals. To represent the Junior Fair Board, the Fair has invited the current officers and members of the organization and their leader to ride in the parade marshal vehicle. If you do not happen to see many Junior Fair Board members riding in the parade marshal vehicle, please know that most of the group’s members are out at the Fairgrounds busily preparing for your arrival later that day! The Fair Parade will be held Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. It will proceed down Milam Street to Walnut, turning left and continuing on Walnut until the procession reaches the vicinity of the Veterans Memorial Center and the Columbus Swimming Pool. Please participate in the 37th Annual Colorado County Fair Parade, and take the time to thank members of the Colorado County Junior Fair Board for all that they do!

The livestock exhibits will be open Thursday and Friday during judging. The sale will be held Saturday at 1 in the Eddie Orange Livestock Pavilion. Please take the time to come out to support the youth of Colorado County who have been working hard for the past few months raising their projects. Sunday the grounds will be open noon-6pm with admission of 4 can good items. The carnival will be open and the pet show begins at 1pm. Sunday will also include horseshoe pitching, washer pitching, a beanbag contest, and a jackpot barrel race. The fair would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the fair board, and all the many volunteers to make this event possible. It has been a great experience to work with everyone and see it all come together. We appreciate your support each year and I say “thank you” and look forward to seeing you at the fair.
