Eight-page summary was released on Feb. 19 By Danny Summers
Dsummers@ coloradocommunitymedia.com The Black Forest Fire District released an eight-page summary of its independent investigation on Feb. 19 and the study found that there was no misconduct by Chief Bob Harvey. The report contradicts the claim made by El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa that Harvey was negligent in his handling of last summer’s blaze that burned nearly 500 homes and scorched more than 14,000 acres. It
was the most destructive blaze in Colorado history. Ed Bracken, head of the fire district’s board of directors, released a statement Feb. 19. “The investigation established firmly that there was no professional misconduct on the part of the chief, and affirms his leadership abilities,” the statement read. “It reinforced, in a major way, the courage and resilience of our firefighters, both professional and volunteer, as they worked together to try and manage this historic fire.” The full 80-page report of the investigation’s findings has been forwarded to the Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review. The full report will not be released until the DA’s office
clears it. David Fisher was the chief investigator. Maketa issued a statement ahead of the release of the report saying his team’s continued investigation into the Black Forest fire would “only stand by facts and evidence” and not “assumption or theories” posed by others. Four months ago, Maketa made his strong accusations against Harvey, which caused even more people associated with the fire to point fingers at Harvey. Maketa said Harvey didn’t turn over command of the fire to the sheriff’s office fast enough and it delayed resources from getting into the fire Fire continues on Page 12
It seems that it doesn’t pay to run a golf course in the Tri-Lakes area these days. King’s Deer Golf Club in Monument became the area’s third course to close in less than a year when it ceased all operations Feb. 17. The move was unexpected. Folks showed up Feb. 17 to play golf and were greeted by a note on the clubhouse door. Others were told via an email that was sent out last week by the King’s Deer board of directors. The email stated that the bank that services the golf course’s loan in Kearney, Neb., is foreclosing on the golf course. The email also apologized for the new member advertisements and called the situation “unfortunate” and an ”unexpected turn of events.” King’s Deer opened in 1999. Voice mails on the King’s Deer message line left by the Tribune were not returned as of late Tuesday. The course’s message machine stated that the “golf course and practice facility are closed until further notice.” The closing of the course will be a subject of a special HOA assembly on Tuesday night, according to a King’s Deer Homeowners Association website. Last November, Gleneagle Golf Course closed down, citing a dramatic drop off in golfers and income with increasing costs for water and other essentials. Last March, Monument Hill Country Club closed between March and June. New owners took over and worked feverishly to get the course back in playing condition. Most recently, owners have been in the
