Mountain View Electric to expand substation Renovation needed to provide power to growing community By Lisa Collacott
Contributing writer To keep up with growth in the Tri-Lakes area, Mountain View Electric Association will expand one of their substations. MVEA has plans to put in a third transformer at the Anderson substation on Jackson Creek Parkway, south of Lewis-Palmer High School. “It’s all the growth in the Jackson Creek area,” Dave Waldner, engineering manager of MVEA, said. The current substation has two transformers and sits on one acre, but after the project is completed it will take up twoand-a-half acres. The expansion was approved by the Monument board of trustees at the Jan. 6 meeting. MVEA has contractPOSTAL ADDRESS
ed with the developer of the land and is scheduled to close on the land in the next few weeks. The project is scheduled to begin in 2015. Waldner said the expanded substation will look noticeably different. There will be a 6-foot high decorative wall around the substation and decorative gates at the entrance. There will also be landscaping put in around the substation. “The town wanted it to look different than it does now,” Waldner said, adding it will look much nicer. The expanded substation is a joint project with Tri-State. Waldner said he does not have an exact cost of the project — but it will be in the $5 million dollar range. Darryl Edwards, member services manager, said the project is part of MVEA’s capital project plan and will come out of the maintenance and operations budget. There will be no rate increase to pay for the project.
