Foundation donates sculptures Northglenn’s art collection worth nearly $400,000 By Tammy Kranz

tkranz@coloradocommunitymedia.com The Northglenn Arts & Humanities Foundation will gift not one, but two, art pieces to the city in 2014. The 2013 People’s Choice winner for the NAHF Art on Parade program was “The Shaman” by Pokey Park and will be bought later this year. NAHF Director Michael Stricker said a location is being scouted and once that is decided, a dedicated date will be announced. “The Shaman” is a 3.3-foot bronze piece with a purchase cost of $8,000. The NAHF will buy the piece and gift it to the city for permanent installation. But that won’t be the only piece gifted to the city this year, Stricker said. “The second place sculpture, ‘Windswept’ by Barry Ferich, is being donated to the city by the artist,” he said. “This will be an excellent and unexpected addition to our collection.” The 7-foot piece is made of recycled aluminum power line and has a price tag of $5,400. The artist is from Nevada. NAHF awards the People’s Choice winning artists $1,000 and buys the sculpture using funds from the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), per capital funds

“We should finally break the $400,000 mark next year,” Stricker said. NAHF purchased the People’s Choice winners from 2002-2014, and are listed in

chronological order: “What’s Next Dad” by Steve Settles at Northglenn Recreation Center, “Hop to It!” by Kim Shaklee at Croke Reservoir, “My Buddy” by Victor Issa at Happy Tails Dog Park, “The Potato Man” by Susan Geissler at City Hall, “The Orphans” by Dollores Shelledy at Northwest Open Space, “High Four” by Louise Peterson at Fox Run (Central Park), “Imagine That” by Kathy Anderson at Wyco Park, “Ascension” by Ryan Schmidt at Winburn Park, “Double Spinner” by Lyman Whitaker at the roundabout at Melody and Kennedy drives, “Blooming Pink Amaryllis Bulb” by Sharles Inc. at the front entrance of City Hall, “Desert Mother” by James Paulsen at Fox Run Open Space, “Bee My Honey” by Colette Pitcher at Grange Hall Creek and “The Shaman” by Pokey Park. Rains Jr. Memorial Park Sensory Playground; and the Veteran’s Committee purchased the “Veterans Memorial” by HaiYing and is at the Veterans Memorial Plaza City Hall. The beast is harmless, however, made of corten steel by New Mexico artist James N. Burnes. “Guermo” is one of six pieces that are part of the Northglenn Arts and Humanities Foundation (NAHF) Art on Parade, a program that allows the community to vote on their favorite piece to become a permanent fixture in the city. The pieces were unveiled during a ceremony June 25. The art will be on exhibit until May 2015 at E.B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park, 11801 Community Center Drive. Residents get to vote for their favorite piece and NAHF will purchase the winner of the “People’s Choice” award. The art will then be gifted to the city for permanent placement. This is the 14th year of the program. “Not only do we have a high quality selection this year but we have several large pieces,” said NAHF Director Michael Stricker. “While I appreciate the detail of smaller sculpture it’s always exciting to drive by the park and see these large impactful pieces.” Another large piece this year is the 18-foot piece “Colorado at 135,” which greets visitors as they enter the park from the southwest parking lot. For the selection process this year the selection committee was able to view submissions for the program projected on the large movie screen in the D.L. Parsons Theatre. “This allowed for the images to be close to lifesize,” he said. “I’m not sure this persuaded the group toward larger sculptures but it did allow them the ability to get a truer sense of the submissions.” The committee received 52 submissions from across the country, including California, New York, Indiana and Arizona. The committee this year had 46 members and included citizens, park visitors, city council members and Northglenn Arts and Humanities Parade continues on Page 14
