Michael Mozingo has been a band instructor in District 38 for nearly a quarter century and has had an impact on thousands of young musicians. Recently, the Lewis-Palmer Middle School band director was selected by School, Band and Orchestra Magazine as Colorado’s 2014 Di-

rector of the Year. Mozingo is featured in the December issue of the magazine as one of the “50 Directors Who Make a Difference.” One director from each state is chosen by SBO. “This is a great honor,” Mozingo said. “To me this is a big deal. “I’m not sure how I was nominated, or who nominated me, but I went through the application process and I found out about a month ago that I was selected.” Mozingo has taught music for 34 years. He has taught in District 38 for 23 years; 18 at the middle school level and five at Lewis-Palmer High School. Mozingo teaches a seventh grade band class, eight grade band class, and an

eighth grade jazz band that meets after school. Two years ago, one of Mozingo’s bands played at the annual Colorado Music Educators Association conference at the famed Broadmoor. School bands are eligible once every three years. “I like to audition for the conference each time we are eligible,” Mozingo said. “Events like that help raise the level of performance me and my students. Plus, it gives us a chance to hear and see what some other great bands are like.” Known for his dry humor, Mozingo added that his proudest moments come when he sees his former students in outstanding Mozingo continues on Page 4

dsummers@coloradocommunitymedia.com Nancy Roberts is the Gifted Education Facilitator at Bear Creek Elementary School. It wasn’t until last year that Roberts discovered she had a knack for grant writing. That turned into Bear Creek receiving $2,800 in Lego kits for the school, which allowed Bear Creek to compete in the WeDo Lego Build Competition (combined Legos and computer programming) sponsored by Challenger learning center and the Air Force Academy. This year’s event took place at the new Pikes Peak 21st Century Library in Colorado Springs. Bear Creek first and third grade students competed on Dec. 2 in the Lego Simple Machine build competition. There was no computer programming involved; only Legos. The third grade team comprised of three students took first place. On Dec. 4, two Bear Creek fifth-grade teams participated in the WeDo Lego Build Competition (combined Legos and computer programming). One of the fifth-grade teams brought home a first-place trophy. In 2013, four Bear Creek teams took home Lego continues on Page 4
