District 38 teachers report for duty as early as Aug. 8 School begins Aug. 20 for District 38 students By Danny Summers dsummers @coloradocommunitymedia.com The start of the school year for the Lewis-Palmer School District 38 is Aug. 20. That means that more than 6,300 children in grades kindergarten through 12 will make their way to one of the District’s many elementary, middle and high schools. “Our administration has been meeting on and off throughout the summer,” said District 38 superintendent Karen Brofft. “Aug. 1 is kind of the traditional ‘We’re back on the full road to get ready for the year.’ “The beginning of the school year is always exciting. Sort of like when you are a kid.” This school year will be Brofft’s first as superintendent of the district. She previously worked in Douglas County. “This is an opportunity to begin and renew with new goals and lot of energy,” she said. “It’s always a great time to renew. “As a superintendent I want us to put our stamp on this together. This is not just about my vision.” The District website lists 11 schools, including Monument Academy (a charter school), Options 38 alternative high school and Home School Enrichment Academy. New teachers will be thrown into the

fire Aug. 8 for a four-day orientation at “Big Red.” Existing teachers will report for duty Aug. 14. On Aug. 18, all the teachers and administration staff will gather at Palmer Ridge for what Brofft referred to as an all-staff convocation — a sort of coming together. “We have about 350 certified teachers and 800 total employees in the district,” Brofft said. “Five-hundred of those folks will go to convocation.” The sports calendar year actually begins before students attend classes. The first official day most sports are allowed to assemble is Aug. 11. Boys golf can have its first official practice Aug. 4, and its first competition as early as Aug. 7. Boys tennis can have competitions Aug. 14 and softball can play official games Aug. 15. The District Board of Education announced the establishment of the LewisPalmer School District Hall of Fame at its August meeting in 2013. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to publicly recognize those who have made significant contributions to the success of the District and its students. The first inductees to the Hall of Fame were Ray Kilmer, former superintendent of schools — Norma Lavelett, former district secretary — Grace Best, former elementary school teacher — Frank Royal, former school board member — and Don Breese, former high school principal. The 2014 Hall of Fame Class has not yet been announced.

A second pot measure will be on the November ballot in Palmer Lake Measure would prohibit the operation of retail marijuana stores in the town until at least Nov. 7, 2017 By Danny Summers

dsummers@coloradocommunitymedia.com Palmer Lake voters will have more to decide on in November than whether to just allow the legalized sales of recreational marijuana. A group led by Chris Amenson successfully gathered enough signatures to have a second measure on the ballot that would prohibit proponents of pot sales from continuing to put a measure on a ballot through 2017. “We want to take this off the table so we can talk about the real issues facing our town,’ Amenson said. “Having rejected the sales of recreational marijuana in April of this year the electorate will face this issue once again because certain folks didn’t like the decision. “In April there was a clear majority of voters who decided that recreational sales of marijuana would not be in the best interests of our residents and our organizers believe that the majority of voters will reaffirm this position.” Amenson’s measure states: “Resolution: Whereas, under the Federal Controlled Sub-
