Clouds obscured the sky while stars shined brightly on the Hampden Hall stage. The occasion was Englewood Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Night of Stars Talent Show. Seats were hard to find Feb. 20 as families and friends came to watch young performers from the city and surrounding areas show off their skills. “We had a good audition, and 32 acts will perform tonight,” said Chris Vitale, show organizer. “This is the first time on our stage for about half our performers and about half the performers have competed here before. We have variety acts, instrumentalists and singers make up the biggest category.” Many of the performers wore costumes. For example, Alyssa Marino wore a costume to complement her singing and dancing performance

Englewood will soon begin contract negotiations with Denver for fire and rescue services. Englewood City Council’s consensus approval Feb. 17 directed City Manager Eric Keck to begin working on the details of the contract with the Denver Fire Department for fire protection and with Denver Health for rescue services. The decision to contract with Denver, a cost-cutting move, had the support of six members of the council, Mayor Randy Penn, Mayor Pro Tem Linda Olson and Councilmem-

Councilmember Rick Gillit said he wanted to see Englewood maintain its fire department. “I base my decision on what I hear from people I represent,” he said. “Overwhelmingly, the people I talked to want Englewood to maintain its fire department and would be willing to approve a tax increase to make that happen.” McCaslin said he supports contracting with Denver for fire services. “I looked at the data and listened to the comments of residents to help me make this decision,” he said. “I feel contacting with Denver is what is best for the city because it is a plan that is sustainable and it helps the city financially.” Yates said one of his campaign issues was making sure the city Fire continues on Page 10
Current and former members of the Englewood Fire Department were among about 100 people who attended the Feb. 17 city council study session.
