Englewood should turn over its fire/rescue service to Denver Fire, said City Manager Eric Keck. He thinks the city maintaining its own independent fire/rescue service is not an option. That leaves Englewood with two choices: contracting with either the Denver Fire Department or with South Metro Fire Rescue Authority. “This is a thorny issue, but my

recommendation is Englewood contract with Denver Fire Department for fire/rescue services,” Keck said. “Contracting with Denver is the most viable economic alternative. Contracting with Denver would save the city money that can be applied to a long list of capital improvement needs within Englewood.” The city council and Keck urge residents and businesses to voice their opinions about the recommendation. Residents can speak out about the issue during the public comment periods at the Feb. 2 city council meeting, can enter their opinions about the recommendation on a comment form on the city’s web site at www.englewoodgov.org or email comments to the members of

city council by sending the e-mail to council@englewoodgov.org. Keck used a power point for his presentation. The current budget for the Englewood Fire Department is $9.1 million, he said, but there are no funds for an estimated $18.2 million in capital costs for renovation of stations and equipment replacement. The proposed cost of contracting for fire/rescue services with Denver is about $4.7 million with additional costs of about $1.4 million for a total cost of about $6.1 million, he said. Denver achieved the travel time goal from station to emergency site of about 4 minutes on 85.4 percent of the calls in December, he said. In contrast, Englewood Fire Department achieved the travel time goal of 5 minutes, 12 seconds on

88.56 percent of the December calls for service, said Andy Marsh, Englewood Fire Chief. Denver Health Services would provide emergency medical service, answering medical calls and transporting patients to Swedish Medical Center or the hospital of their choice. Response time is estimated at about 9 minutes, but Keck noted all Denver firefighters are paramedics so they will be on scene to begin treating the patient before the ambulance arrives. The base cost to contract with South Metro Fire Rescue Authority is $6.4 million with additional costs and capital costs of about $12.8 million for a total cost of about $20.2 EFD continues on Page 4

El Tepehuan plans to move down road New location scheduled to open in early summer By Tom Munds

tmunds @coloradocommunitymedia.com Jesus Corral promises that, while the name will be shorter and the space will be larger when El Tepehuan Restaurant and Steak House moves a few doors south in early summer, the quality of the service and food will remain unchanged He said the name has been confusing for some, so plans call for a new logo and a switch to the restaurant nickname, El Tep. The restaurant’s new home will be the former Saigon Palace Restaurant building that is about twice the size of the present location. The move will take the eatery from its current location at 3457 S. Broadway to 3495 S. Broadway. “My dad, Jose, bought the PJ Steak House in 1978, changed the name and, using family recipes, El Tep continues on Page 4
