Boy’s death triggers investigation Staff Report Wheat Ridge Police are investigating how a 10-year-old boy died last week. The boy, later identified as Angel Goodwin, who was developmentally disabled, was found unresponsive by authorities the evening of May 5 at an apartment in the 2600 block of Chase Street. “We did attempt CPR on the child,” according to Wheat Ridge Police information

officer John Romero. Angel was transported to a nearby hospital, and later died. Wheat Ridge police carried out search warrants on the apartment, and took several items. Romero said police had also

conducted several interviews. Romero said officers were familiar with the residence, having visited it before, in tandem with Jeffco Health and Human Services. He said investigators were going those old records as part of the ongoing investigation, and that he could not elaborate on the reasons behind those past visits. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office conducted a preliminary autopsy on May 7, but results were inconclusive as to the

Renewable energy laboratory celebrates 43 patents Annual awards ceremony recognizes dedicated employees Staff Report At an annual awards ceremony, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory celebrated the issuance of 43 U.S. patents in fiscal year 2014, which is the largest number in lab history, and exceeds 2013’s total by nearly three times. Min Zhang was recognized as Distinguished Innovator for dedicating 25 years of work with the lab’s Energy Department’s Bioenergy Technology Program. Two people were given a Rising Star award, which recognizes the lab’s employees who have fewer than six years of service: Chuck Booten, who works in buildings and thermal systems, and John Simon, who works in materials applications and performance. The awards ceremony, which took place this year on May 7 at the Denver West Marriott in Golden, celebrates the lab’s innovation and technology transfer accomplishments from the past year. Following the ceremony was a networking reception.
