Meow Wolf artist debuts his first film at Sundance Film Festival

When Dimitri Simakis worked on the Pizza Pals Playzone exhibit at Meow Wolf Convergence Station in Denver, he already had the idea for his first film. “The Rainbow Bridge” is Simakis’s first film.

“The Rainbow Bridge” was written, directed, edited and composed

by Dimitri Simakis. It was produced

by Simakis’s wife, filmmaker SukiRose and producer Michael Scott.

The cinematography was by Seannie Bryan and production design was by Courtney Andujar & Hillary Andujar. The film stars Thu Tran, Heather

Lawless, James Urbaniak, David Brown, and and rapper Fat Tony as the voice of MeeMoo. It’s a short film about a pet owner Tina (played by Thu Tran) who embarks on a fantastic process to connect with her terminally ill dog MeeMoo (voiced by rap artist Fat Tony).

“It was something like between 12 and 15 years ago, I just had an idea,” Simakis said about “The Rainbow Bridge.” He described knowing that he wanted to do a film and that he wanted Tran in that film. Simakis also knew that he wanted to make a fantasy film at that time.

head while he worked on the Meow Wolf exhibit. In fact, anyone who has visited the Pizza Pals Playzone will see the similarities in “The Rainbow Bridge.”

Simakis explains that those similarities are there because he had a similar goal for the film as he did for the exhibit: immersion. And he wanted it on both sides of the camera.

“Bring immersion on the side of the performers who are on set that day, the crew and just everyone feeling like those spaces are real,” he said. “But of course, for the audience.”

Simakis said his goal was to get the audience to ask themselves questions.

“Oh, this place, is that real? What’s going on?” Simakis went on to say that he wanted the film to “feel lived in and authentic in that way, even if it’s fantastical.”

To achieve this immersion, Simakis put the same attention to detail into both his Meow Wolf exhibit and the film.

“I kept thinking, if you walk through this room (Pizza Pals Playzone), or watch this short film (“The Rainbow Bridge”), once walk through the room for five seconds, or you watch the film a couple times, I want it to be the same result which is that there’s something for you on ev-

ery level,” Simakis said. The film and the exhibit have so much embedded content that the viewer finds more meaning as they sit in or watch the projects.

“So adding jokes [(to the film) that nobody’s reading and references, the quantum wellness questionnaire, it’s all real,” Simakis explained.

These elements may be missed the first time viewing “The Rainbow Bridge,” but they are things people will see after viewing the short film each time, Simakis said.

According to Simakis, attention to detail is what makes the immersion possible. The details also made him work overtime at building the worlds.

“How can I do as much as possible in the time that I have by just building, designing and cranking out poster after poster after poster,” Simakis said. “You don’t see probably 60% of the posters at all. They’re either too small, or they’re on one side of the room. It’s fine, because I knew there was going to be more than enough details, but I wanted to have it all there so that the set felt lived in and it felt authentic.”

NAR Releases Profile of Denver Metro Area Buyers and Sellers

Last week I reported on the real estate market in metro Denver. This week, I’m providing information from a National Association of Realtors (NAR) survey of buyers and sellers that was released in December. NAR did a national survey but provided data from the 169 Denver area respondents who had purchased a home in the 12-month period from July 2022 through June 2023. The buyers were identified from public records of transactions, not from MLS data.

Those buyers who had also sold a home constituted the database for the survey of sellers. The survey was limited to buyers of primary residences, not investment properties. Here’s my editing of the report released for Denver via the Denver Metro Association of Realtors.

Characteristics of Home Buyers • In Denver, the median age of recent home buyers was 43 years old, compared to 49 nationally. The largest share of home buyers in Denver this year were in the 25 to 34 years age group (27 percent) and the 35 to 44 years age group (25 percent). This graph shows both the Denver and national breakdowns:

• 82 percent of buyers were White/ Caucasian, 9 percent were Hispanic/ Latino, 2 percent were Black/African American, 8 percent were Asian/Pacific Islander, and 3 percent identified as other.

Financing the Home Purchase • For 42 percent of buyers, the source of the downpayment was their savings, and 35% of buyers cited using the proceeds from the sale of a primary residence for their downpayment. 10% used gifts from friends or relatives.

• The median percent financed for first-time buyers was 91 percent compared to 75 percent for repeat buyers.

• Buyers continue to see purchasing a home as a good financial investment. 82 percent reported they view a home purchase as a good investment.

Do repaint where there is peeling or discolored paint. (Think “eyesore.”)

Do replace rotted timbers on your deck, then power wash and re-stain or repaint as necessary.

Do improve curb appeal (always the first impression), including weeding and pruning and freshening the front door.

Beyond the above advice, I tell my sellers to be strategic about major issues which they know need to be done. If these are likely to become inspection issues, don’t fix them prior to listing your home if they’re not the kind of eyesore which would deter a buyer from making an offer.

For example, I had a listing with damage to the concrete driveway. The seller was thinking he should repair it before putting the home on the market. We knew it would be an inspection issue, but by leaving it undone we could use it as a bargaining chip. Sure enough, we got under contract and the inspection demands included repairing the driveway. Since it was the most expensive item on a long list of repairs, we said we’d repair that but nothing else, and the buyer accepted it.

The Lakewood Advisory Commission reports on diversity in Lakewood

The Lakewood Advisory Commission delivered its 2023 annual report at the Jan. 8 Lakewood City Council meeting. The report included a look at diversity in the city. Commission chair Kate McBride delivered the annual report which provided information on the commission’s growth and progress.

The commission’s diversity subcommittee chair Fernando Rocha presented a report on the Women and Minorities Business Enterprises in Lakewood. The request came from the council.

Several months ago, Councilor Jesslin Shahrezaei asked if the city needs new updated policies and procedures to ensure equitable access for women and minority-owned business enterprises to participate in the city’s contracting process, according to Rocha.

The research project grew out of that question.

Rocha’s presentation explained the process that the LAC diversity subcommittee undertook to explore this question. Rocha told the council what other cities, like Boulder, Denver, and Colorado Springs are doing.

Then they gathered information on Lakewood’s current procurement

processes as well.

At the end of his presentation, Rocha presented five recommendations to the council for ensuring access to the procurement system for women and minority-owned businesses in Lakewood.

1. The city needs to keep and update data on awarded contracts.

2. The city needs to do more outreach to women and minority-owned businesses.

3. The city should host and (city staff ) attend workshops for women

and minority-owned businesses.

4. Appoint a staff member or hire someone to ensure that access to city contracts is equitable.

5. Make goals and benchmarks to guide the city’s efforts in this area.

Rocha said the full report has more recommendations and details on how the committee reached those conclusions.

The council unanimously voted for Councilor Jesslin Shahrezaei as the next mayor pro tem. Shahrezaei will work closely with Mayor Wendi Strom, and also serve in her absence at meetings and official functions.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this capacity and I look forward to getting to work this year,” Shahrezaei said after the vote.

Shahrezaei will serve for the rest of 2024.

The council also approved a slate of committees and other appointments. These are subcommittees and boards where the councilors are liaisons, representing the city.

Questions and answers on “executive sessions”

A few of the public comments addressed the city council’s practice of “executive sessions.” The issue was brought up later in the meeting when Councilor Dave Rein moved to have an executive session before the next council meeting to discuss the proposed Yarrow Street/ Belmar Park development. Several of the public comments addressed this development as well.

“Working on Meow Wolf was something that we were doing during mostly COVID,” Simakis said.

He revealed that planning took place as early as 2017, but the building happened in 2020.

“My wife and I moved a couple of hours outside of LA since then to a mountain town where it’s just very cozy and quiet,” he said. “Being able to be alone with your thoughts while worldbuilding, is like the most pure form of art.”

According to Simakis, the Pizza Pals world was also a challenge because of permanence.

“The permanence of Pizza Pals made it challenging, but that was also okay,” Simakis said. “That’s a mountain to climb. Somebody walking through for five seconds, or somebody taking a look at every sin-

Simakis said the viewers would notice Easter eggs, or references to other things in pop culture, science and other artworks.

“Film is no different,” Simakis

said. “I have to make the footage. I have to create the world otherwise, it’s going to be small and I don’t want that. It was amazing how much the film and Meow Wolf exhibit overlap. The mentality of the film almost felt like an extension of

making an immersive space in that way.”

Simakis said the hardest part of the “Rainbow Bridge” process was letting go of the sets. Simakis is not done with building these intricate worlds and visual storytelling via film. He and his wife Suki Rose have plans for a feature-length film.

“We’re working on the script now for a feature of Rainbow Bridge because we don’t want to say goodbye to these characters yet,” he said.

“We’re still in love with them.”

“The Rainbow Bridge” premiered Jan. 22 at Sundance Film Festival.

Honoring a municipal judge, new Liquor Licensing Authority code and more at the Wheat Ridge Council meeting

The Wheat Ridge city council meeting opened with proclamations honoring law enforcement and a long-time municipal judge.

The council also set hearings for a few land changes and more.

Honors by proclamation

The meeting kicked off with two proclamations celebrating public servants. Mayor Bud Starker presented a proclamation honoring Judge Christopher Randall and another for Wheat Ridge police.

Randall has served the city of Wheat Ridge since 2002. His service came to an end Dec. 31, 2023. Mayor Starker thanked Judge Randall for his career, while acknowledging some of Randalle’s achievements.

This includes winning the Municipal Judge of the Year award for 2023.

“Your commitment to upholding justice and ensuring the well-being of our community has not gone unnoticed,” Starker said. “Your efforts have made a positive impact, and your dedication is truly commendable.”

Randall commended the staff, mayor and council for their efforts over the years. His speech garnered a standing ovation.

The second proclamation of the evening honored Wheat Ridge police. National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was created to “draw attention to the dedication of law enforcement officers who serve the public and make a difference while doing a job they love,” Starker said.

Commander Betsy Sailor of the Wheat Ridge Police Department joined Starker at the podium. Sailor received the proclamation on behalf of WRPD. She said that none of the officers do their jobs for the recognition.

“They are just doing a job they love with integrity and professionalism,” Sailor said. “But it does mean the world to us that we have the support of our city leaders, our city council, mayor and the men and women of the community we serve.”

Enforcement Day in the city of Wheat Ridge.

The council set public hearing in February for two land transactions.

These are essentially property designation changes, one a request to

rezone a property and the other to vacate an unused piece of land.

According to Councilor Amanda Weaver, the owner of a property at 10390 W. 38th Ave. requested a zone change. The property was zoned Commercial One and the owner was requesting a change to Mixed Use-Neighborhood.

According to the staff memo on the resolution, the change would allow the property to match surrounding properties and allow for the development of townhomes.

The public hearing for this zoning change is set for the Feb. 12 Wheat Ridge City Council meeting.

The second land transaction was a request to vacate a property. The city of Wheat Ridge owns the property at w. 46th Ave., adjacent to 8766 W. 46th Ave. According to the staff notes, the property was once a part of Clearvale Subdivision in 1955.

“It is staff’s belief that the original intent of Tracts A and B were reserved in case a cul-de-sac was needed if W 46th Avenue ended at that location,” the notes read. “Since W 46th Avenue is currently a thorough street, staff has determined that the City does not need Tracts A and B for use as ROW (right of way).”

The adjacent property owners have maintained the city’s parcel over the years. The resolution is for the city to vacate the parcel to the adjacent owners. The public hearing on the resolution is set for the Feb. 12, 2024 city council meeting.

“I am very interested in what’s happening in Loveland and how they had a development,” Sinks said. “A new council came in and then they voted against the new development. And so, now they are being sued. We certainly don’t want to waste taxpayer money on any lawsuits.”

Sinks agreed that an executive session was needed so that the council could understand the legal ramifications of any upcoming decisions on the Yarrow Street/ Belmar development.

Strom broke in after the council vot-

ed to explain what the executive session is in hopes that it alleviates any public questions about the process.

Strom said an executive session is needed to have an “attorney-client privileged conversation,” to discuss the single issue of the Yarrow Street development. Strom added that the executive session is a way for the council to ask and get answers on legal questions about the development.

Liquor Licensing Authority rule change

The city council held a public hearing on proposed amendments to the City’s Boards and Commissions Code, concerning the Liquor Licensing Authority. The amendments would “create new regulations pertaining to term limits, unexcused absences, automatic removal, approximately equal district representation of board members and Council’s ability to remove members among other things,” Councilor Korey Stites said.

The amendments would essentially bring the Liquor Licensing Authority in line with Wheat Ridge’s other boards and commissions, by giving the council more authority.

The council could remove members in accordance with the policies governing boards and commissions, according to Stites. The amendments would also set term limits and establish automatic removal for members who move outside of their appointed districts.

The council read the resolution, heard staff corrections, and waited for public comment. The ordinance amending Section 11-52.5 of the Wheat Ridge Code of Laws concerning membership of the Liquor Licensing Authority passed.

With colder temperatures comes snow blanketing the streets. The roads can be slippery and dangerous for Colorado drivers – new and native to the state. Experts say it’s important to be prepared for the difficult task of driving in the winter.

Colorado AAA says following a few tips can help keep drivers safe when traveling in the harsh winter climate.

Prepare the vehicle

Colorado AAA encourages drivers to test their batteries and electrical systems, check all fluid levels, including antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluid and engine oil and make sure all lights operate properly.

Additionally, AAA advises people to inspect their tires, brakes, windshields and windshield wiper fluid.

“Remember, too, that four-wheel drive does not mean four-wheel stop.

We’ve had to winch out many topof-the-line trucks and SUVs, many equipped with winter tires, simply because their drivers were going too fast for the conditions,” McKinley said.

“Still, as with any storm, the majority of our calls were related to dead batteries, flat tires and engine operability, and most of those were from folks who were already safe at home.”

Keep an emergency kit

For those unlucky enough to end up stranded, whether by sliding off the road or getting stuck in traffic during a closure, Colorado AAA encourages drivers to keep an emergency kit in their cars.

“Keep an emergency kit in your car with tire chains, abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter, small shovel, flashlight with extra batteries, ice scraper, rags or paper towels, flares or other warning devices, booster cables and a first aid kit,” Colorado AAA said.

Drivers should bring blankets, jackets, hats and gloves for themselves and passengers. People should also pack water and snacks, such as energy bars,

“Finally, remember that an ounce of preparation is worth a pound of cure.

Your battery likely tried to warn you it wasn’t up to the task of starting your engine in sub-zero temperatures, likely through dimming headlights or sluggish starts in warmer weather,” McKinley said.

McKinley said by addressing issues drivers will be more prepared for the conditions and any emergency situations they may accrue.

“By addressing all those issues when they first come up, you can help make our roads safer, and significantly reduce your odds of needing to call for assistance in dangerous conditions,” McKinley said.

Driving on icy roads

When driving on icy roads, Colorado AAA advises that people slow down and be careful when accelerating, turning or braking, doing all gradually.

“Adjust your speed to the road conditions and leave yourself ample room to stop. Allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the

car in front of you,” the company advises.

People also shouldn’t tailgate, they need to watch the traffic ahead of them, avoid unnecessarily changing lanes and use extreme caution on bridges and overpasses.

“Black ice typically forms first in shaded areas of the roadway and on bridges and overpasses that freeze first and melt last,” McKinley said. “Although the road leading up to a bridge may be fine, the bridge itself could be a sheet of ice.”

Crystal Essman, a crime prevention specialist for Englewood Police Department, said it’s important for people to make sure they slow down and increase their distance from other cars.

“Increase your following distance enough so that you’ll have plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead of you,” Essman said. “Don’t crowd a snowplow. Snow plows travel slowly, make wide turns, stop often, overlap lanes and exit the road frequently.”

She also encourages people to make sure their children are secure in the proper car seat and that those seats are installed correctly.

Teens to take 911 calls as a county scrambles for dispatchers

out their own programs in recent years to introduce students to careers in emergency response and stem workforce shortages: At two remote schools in Las Animas County, students have learned how to become emergency medical responders while Denver high schoolers have spent class time practicing CPR and checking blood pressure in preparation to work as

emergency medical technicians.

In Calhan and other area districts, the focus is on the very first step in the minute-by-minute frenzy to keep someone alive and send them help: listening to their panic-filled pleas after they dial 911.

Through a broadcast device, Calhan School District — which has nearly 440 students in preschool through 12th grade — is expanding access to its 911 dispatching class to neighboring districts, Colo-

One of the first lessons Scott Brettell teaches his high school students is the importance of being last.

The last person to stay with someone through their last moments — even if only over the phone.

“You might be the last person that person ever gets to talk to,” Brettell told his students during a recent 911 dispatching class at Calhan Public High School near Colorado Springs. “I’ve spent time with people in their last breaths, sometimes on the highway, sometimes in their home. It just depends. It’s sad, but I’m actually thankful that I was able to be there for them to have someone there as they passed away.”

Brettell and about a dozen students are pioneering a new emergency telecommunications course in Calhan School District RJ-1 that gives students an entryway into a dispatch job they can pursue immediately after high school. The program comes at a time El Paso County is desperately searching for more dispatchers. It is among the latest efforts by rural school districts to tap into a pipeline of young people who can step into emergency response roles and help their communities cut down on the time it takes to connect callers with lifesaving help.

Other schools in both rural and metro parts of the state have rolled

rado Springs School District 11 and Miami-Yoder School District 60-JT. Nearby Ellicott School District 22 is also offering a 911 dispatching course and enabling students from Peyton School District 23JT to tune into each instruction.

The courses train students to become certified to take calls in a dispatch center, walking them through the procedures and protocols they need to calmly talk to a person in distress and direct emergency responders to a crisis. A certification takes 40 hours to complete, with students from each district chipping away at that requirement through two hours of class time each week.

Students will also learn customer service skills anchored by a sense of empathy, said Brettell, who reinforces to his class that they “have to be ‘Chick-fil-A courteous’ to these people.”

“These are going to be people having the worst day of their life,” Brettell, who doubles as Calhan School District’s school security officer, tells his students. “And you are going to be the one person that holds it all together for them and you are going to be the person that gets them help as soon as possible.

But you also have to be the person that under really stressful situations is going to have to understand that you have to be cool, calm and collected and keep your composure through the worst of the circumstances.”

Fewer students enrolled in Colorado schools again this year

The number of students in Colorado schools continues to drop and is now lower than it was after the large decrease in enrollment at the start of the pandemic.

In October 2023, 881,464 students were enrolled in public schools, down 1,800, or 0.2%, from October 2022, according to official enrollment counts released by the Colorado Department of Education in January.

Before the pandemic, enrollment numbers in Colorado had been increasing every year since the 1980s.

But in fall of 2020, after months of mostly remote learning, enrollment sank by about 30,000 students from the previous year. In fall of 2021, enrollment went up slightly, but has

been falling again since.

State Demographer Elizabeth Garner told the State Board of Education that the decline in enrollment is due partly to decreasing birth rates, but also to a slowdown in migration and mobility.

“We are forecasting that total school-age population to decline basically through 2028-2029, then start to increase, but not get back to levels that we saw in 2019 until about 2035,” Garner said.

She said the trend is statewide.

“Forty-three of the 64 counties had an absolute decline in the under-18 population over the last decade,” Garner said. “It doesn’t matter where you were — Eastern Plains, San Luis Valley, West Slope, Denver metro.”

In a statement, Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Cór-

dova noted concern about the drop in enrollment among the youngest students.

“We know that pre-kindergarten and kindergarten are where students build critical foundations for life-long academic success including language development, early literacy, and social skills,” she said.

Still, she said, “we are encouraged by the state’s commitment to early learning through the Colorado Universal Preschool Program.”

The universal preschool program provides free preschool to all Colorado 4-year-olds and some 3-yearolds. This year, about 50,000 students are enrolled in various types of public and private preschools across the state. Public school districts’ pre-K programs have 32,060 students, slightly fewer than a year earlier.

First grade and kindergarten saw some of the largest decreases in enrollment this year. First grade enrollment declined by 3.91%, or 2,478 students, compared with the first grader group of 2022. Kindergarten had 1,068 fewer students, a 1.79% drop. Eighth grade and ninth grade also had large enrollment declines.

Only five grade levels saw an increase in students compared with last year. The largest increase was among second graders, up by 5%, or more than 3,000 students.

Other segments that grew included those who are home-schooled, and those who are enrolled in online programs.

Enrollment in charter schools decreased by 1.8% to 135,223.

The number of students identified as experiencing homelessness statewide went up by 1,570 compared with last year.

Last school year only one district in Colorado, Adams 12, had more than 1,000 students identified as needing services related to homelessness. This year, there were four such districts — Aurora, Adams 12, Jeffco, and Poudre.

By percentage, the tiny district of Sheridan continues to have the highest proportion of its students experiencing homelessness in the metro area, but the number has dropped over the years. This school year, 149 Sheridan students, or 14.1%, are experiencing homelessness, down from 205, or 18.2%, last year.

Broken down by race, white students had the largest decreases in enrollment, while Hispanic or Latino students had the largest increases. Schools counted 312,687 Hispanic or Latino students in October 2023, up from 308,739 the year before.

By percentage, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander students had the largest enrollment jump: 9.18% more than last year. These students make up a tiny proportion of all

Among the state’s largest districts, just a handful recorded more students than last year. They include Aurora Public Schools, which had a slight increase, and Denver Public Schools, which gained 371 students. Denver has attributed the increase to an influx of migrant students, many from Venezuela.

Among the metro-area districts,

School District 27J in Brighton had the largest growth in enrollment. It gained more students than Denver, Aurora, or any of the large districts.

Meanwhile, Sheridan, Westminster, and Adams 14 had the largest decreases in the metro area.

The state’s data reflect official student counts in October, and those are the counts typically used to determine funding levels.

But the state’s release acknowl-

edged that several districts have seen a large number of students who are new to the country arriving throughout the school year.

VOICES Prismajic casts a spell at Colorado Mills

etting lost in a work of art is an experience that has been happening to people for centuries, and artists are always looking for new ways to get the public invested in their work.

The creatives behind Prismajic have taken this urge and supersized it in its new location in Colorado Mills, 14500 W. Colfax, Suite 359, in Lakewood.

“Prismajic is an immersive adventure that marries art and cuttingedge technology to transport visitors to the enchanting and surreal forest inhabited by Shiki, a mystical yeti and leader of the Spirits of the Forest,” wrote Lisa Fox, marketing manager, in an email interview.

Co-founded by Eric Jaenike and Jennifer Mosquera, the organization has been around since 2013, but the Lakewood location is its first permanent home. According to provided information, Prismajic started building immersive experiences for corporate clients in 2013 under the name Artistry Events & Design. Even while doing that work, the aim was to open true mesmerizing experiences that could be enjoyed by everyone.

How the GOP primary process works

s of Jan.11, there are 45 declared or rumored candidates for the GOP nomination in Congressional Districts 3, 4 and 5 combined, according to politics1.com. With so many reported candidates for three nominations in what would ordinarily be safe Republican districts, the race for the nomination will more than likely be tantamount to election. It is a good idea to review

how a candidate can be placed on the GOP primary ballot along with commentary on each of the two methods.

These two methods apply statewide in all races rather than just the three congressional districts

and to both major parties.

The first method is the Assembly process. Members of the Assembly for these Congressional Districts are elected at the upcoming precinct caucuses in March. The number of delegates to these Assemblies varies. When I was active, the state party generally set the number of delegates at one delegate for every 250 voters. The state party will calculate how many

delegates a county and congressional district will receive. Based on the data from the Secretary of State’s office CD5 for example has 138,352 registered Republican voters as of Dec. 1. With this data and ratio of one delegate for 250 voters, the CD5 Assembly for example will tentatively have 553 potential delegates to it.

Tips on filling out the new Better FAFSA

The rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid has been anything but smooth.

Technology issues have frustrated families since the federal government’s Dec. 31 soft launch of the FAFSA, which is usually available in October.

The Better FAFSA, as the new form is known, has been redesigned to include fewer questions. The federal government intends it to be faster for students to fill out, leading to higher completion rates.

But there have been technical difficulties.

“The form is simpler,” said MorraLee Keller, senior director of strategic programming at the National College Attainment Network, a nonprofit focused on increasing college access and attainment, especially

Delegates listen to candidates for office make their pitch to them. If a candidate receives more than 30% of the delegates’ votes, then they will move on to June’s primary ballot. Receiving 10 and 30% they will make it to the primary if they have petitioned onto the primary ballot (the next method). With less than 10% of the vote at an Assembly, you do not advance to the primary.

The other route to make it to the primary ballot is the petition process. Simply put, you circulate a petition to voters and ask them to sign it to place your name on the primary ballot. For U.S. Representatives, 1,500 signatures are required.

Oftentimes you must use paid petition circulators to petition onto the ballot. The estimated cost per signature is anywhere from $15 to $25 per signature. However, it must be noted that with a cadre of dedicated supporters who are willing to work on a volunteer basis, it is possible to get onto the ballot via the petition process.

Issues have included the new application only being available for limited hours. Families and students have gotten stuck waiting for screens to load and have reported difficulty submitting the form. It’s left families anxious after months of waiting for the form, because the FAFSA is a crucial part of the college-going process.

Filling out the FAFSA opens up student aid, scholarships, and grants.

The potential financial help gives families an idea of which college or university they can afford.

Both processes are equally valid ways to get access to the primary ballot. I would encourage any candidate to petition onto the ballot especially those who are in a crowded race. Embrace the petition process and ignore the naysayers.

Both methods are a means of saying someone should be on the GOP primary ballot to make the case to voters. Votes at an assembly accomplish this as well as signatures on a petition. Petition signers are saying that this person is worthy of making their case to the voters. Supporters of the Assembly process will deride petitioning on as a “pay to play” endeavor. It has a financial element yes, but I would rather have someone who has the financial resources to petition onto the ballot as a choice in the primary than not. Petitioning is ultimately more democratic because it requires 1,500 signatures versus just a small portion of 500-600 delegates.

Election 2024 promises to be interesting. Stay informed throughout the year about the choices you should make as a voter.

Volunteers say community orchestras create more connected, well-rounded society

n a cold January night in a Wheat Ridge church, a large group of people traveled back in time to the 1800s — not by using new technology, but rather musical instruments.

Brows furrowed and fingers fluttered as the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, made up of roughly 70 volunteer musicians, perform a composition from an 1800s opera, “Carmen.”

The community orchestra is one of many in the metro Denver region that offer people an opportunity to bring their musical talents and passions to life regardless of their profession, age or background.

Despite the time and work it takes to execute exceptional performances, volunteer musicians through-

out the metro region say the effort is worth it, highlighting the value of music for themselves and their communities.

Chris Loring, principal violist of the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, said the orchestra brings together people who share the same passion that they’ve all had since first picking up their instruments.

“And now, here we are. We have this talent that we can share with each other, and that’s really fulfilling just to put it all together and be artistic and have fun,” she said. “It’s a great sense of community.”

In the southern metro region of Denver, the Littleton Symphony Orchestra shares a similar goal of upholding community, said Bill Mesa, an assistant principal percussionist in the symphony.

“With any community orchestra, they want to be a part of the commu-

nity,” Mesa said. “Not just in it.”

Compared to an organization like the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, which dates back to the 1950s, a relatively newer community orchestra in the metro region is the Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra, founded in 2000.

Katie Smith, principal oboe of the Lone Tree symphony, underlined the importance of having an orchestra in any community, whether it be Jefferson County, Littleton or Lone Tree.

“Having arts organizations provides a more well-rounded community as a whole,” Smith said. “It creates a more pleasant community to live in when you have more opportunities for the arts.”

The start of lifelong musical careers

For both Loring and Smith, their musical careers started at a young age with playing the piano.

Loring, a 42-year-old pet photographer and private music teacher who lives in Jefferson County, said that in sixth grade, she joined the student orchestra.

Out of the roughly 25 students there, no one had signed up to play viola, a string instrument that is slightly larger than a violin and has a deeper sound. The teacher asked who in the room wanted to play viola, leading to an awkward silence, Loring recalled.

“This cute boy next to me grabbed my hand, raised it up in the air, and the rest is history,” she said. “From that point forward, I really fell in love with the instrument.”

She went on to the University of Northern Colorado and studied viola performance, and today, she helps teach young musicians.

“I love teaching for a couple of reasons. No. 1, I can have a hand in developing musicians that are going to come behind me,” Loring said. “These orchestras don’t fill up unless we have students that are learning and growing and developing a passion for something that some people might consider dorky or weird — but these kids are really, really excited about it.”

Smith, a 50-year-old Highlands Ranch resident who does project work with Cigna Healthcare as her day job, said her mom was a church musician.

“She started me on piano at 5 (years old) and then I apparently kept asking … what instrument I should play if I wanted to play in church,” Smith said. “She said, ‘Please play the oboe.’”

Playing the oboe, a woodwind instrument, as a young child would have been a tall task, Smith said, so she initially started by playing the flute. By the end of fifth grade, however, she started the oboe.

“I took to the oboe like a duck to water,” she said.

Smith got her undergraduate degree in music from the University of Denver, she said. Although she had always intended to be a professional musician, when she got into college, she was encouraged to double major “so that I would at least have something to eat,” she said with a laugh.

She got a minor in business and realized she did not want to pursue a professional music career, she said.

“I think since I don’t do it as my primary profession, I get more enjoyment out of it as an avocation than a vocation,” Smith said.

For Mesa, a 57-year-old Centennial resident, his music career started as a young boy playing drums on coffee cans that his mom discarded, he said. He recalled listening to his dad’s vinyl records that featured lots of

percussion, drawing him to the drums.

“The clincher is when I first saw ‘Star Wars,’ and the music just blew me away,” Mesa said.

“I thought, ‘Wow. Hear all those drums.’”

Eventually, he picked up drums through public schooling and performed through college.

However, he did not major in music performance.

Rather, he found an interest in accounting and is now an accounting professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Highlighting the ability of community orchestras to connect people, he said some of his former students will attend the Littleton Symphony Orchestra’s concerts and come up to him afterward to catch up.

“Those are all community factors. There doesn’t have to be anonymity,” he said about local performances.

Discovering community orchestras

From seeing an advertisement to getting a phone call about an opening, the process of getting involved in a community orchestra can look different for everyone.

Loring said she first learned about the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra when she moved to Golden around 2008, saying she saw an advertisement for it. She had been looking for an orchestra to join and had heard great things about it, she said.

“It’s been around for decades, and many of the people who play in this orchestra have been here for decades,” she said. “When I joined, this was known as one of … the premier orchestras in terms of community orchestras for this area.”

The orchestra, which musicians have to audition to get into, is made up of roughly 70 people ranging from college-age to post-retirement age, she said.

“It’s a really great orchestra full of some insanely talented musicians. We have played repertoire that you hear from the professional symphony,” she said.

Smith got involved in the Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra around 2006 after hearing about it through a friend. When she started playing with the orchestra, they performed in a church, she recalled. Now, they perform in the Lone Tree Arts Center, which she said is an amazing opportunity that not every community orchestra has.

She estimated roughly 60 musicians are in the orchestra, which requires an audition to join.

“We provide excellent entertainment for the community and it’s done in a manner where it isn’t haughty,” she said. “It’s presented in a way that people really feel encouraged to go and I think they really enjoy the opportunity and they enjoy the performance.”

Smith described making music with others in the symphony as both beautiful and challenging, especially if the musicians have different skill sets.

“You have to be patient,” she said.

Mesa got connected to the Littleton Symphony Orchestra when he got a phone call from the thenprincipal percussionist asking if he would be interested in filling in because the orchestra needed an extra person. Some time afterward, Mesa auditioned and became a regular member of the symphony about 17 years ago.

“It challenged me more. It upped my game and playing because the players in the orchestra are remarkable, high caliber,” he said. “You can get some exceptional performances from the community orchestras in the Denver metro area that you live by, and you’re supporting the community.”

The vision of the Littleton Symphony Orchestra, which is made up of about 50 musicians ranging in age from early 20s to upper 70s, is to provide performances that elevate the human spirit, Mesa said.

“We pursue that relentlessly, knowing it’s something we’ll never accomplish,” he said. “That’s what drew me into the orchestra.”

The value of music and community

Although volunteering in the symphony orchestra requires hours of practice and rehearsal, one of the most rewarding factors is making music with friends, Mesa said.

“There’s nothing quite like that type of effort when you have this number of people and when (a) performance pops and it sparks.

And you can feel that from the audience because there is some communication between the orchestra and the audience,” he said. “It’s the best. You can’t replace it.”

Community orchestras are valuable because they provide a music outlet for residents who may not have the budget to pay the higherpriced tickets to see a professional orchestra, Mesa said.

“Just give the orchestra a chance,” he said. “It’s fun, and it’s live music … something we’re, I think, missing nowadays.”

Smith said the Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra is fortunate because it has had the support of the city since the very beginning.

Similar to Mesa, Smith said being a part of any orchestra is a unique, special experience.

“I think the most rewarding part of any performance is knowing that you’ve provided not only (an) escape in what you’re doing and what you’re creating — you’re also creating an experience for somebody else,” Smith said.

“I think the most important thing for folks to know is that we’re here,” she added. “You don’t necessarily have to go downtown to hear the symphony.”

busy lives, Loring said. Yet, the time and effort is worth it.

“As a musician, the thing that I love about working in a group like this and performing is that this is the only way we get to bring to life some of the art that’s been given to this world,” Loring said. “With classical music, we have composers who wrote these incredible manuscripts, and they wrote these ideas and these concepts and these stories in notes.

“And it’s up to us to translate that, and to create a story and to tell that through our music using our talents. And that, to me, is the coolest part,” she added.

Community orchestras are important to the local community for a number of reasons, Loring said.

One of them is that the orchestras provide activities for residents to enjoy. Another is the opportunity the orchestra provides to the volunteers, giving musicians a chance to continue to play their instrument when maybe they otherwise would not have.

“How many people stop playing because they don’t have those opportunities?” Loring said. “Orchestras, like the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, give that to people. And that’s really, really important for the community.”

Colorado Catholic preschools make their case at trial challenging nondiscrimination rules

Enrolling preschoolers from LGBTQ families would conflict with the religious beliefs and obligations of Catholic preschools, attorneys for two Denver-area Catholic parishes said on Jan. 2 as the trial began in a lawsuit challenging the nondiscrimination rules in Colorado’s universal preschool program.

Two Catholic parishes that run preschools — St. Mary’s in Littleton and St. Bernadette’s in Lakewood — and the Archdiocese of Denver sued the state in federal district court in August. They argued that a nondiscrimination clause in an agreement required by the state for participation in the preschool program conflicts with their mission to provide a Catholic education. Senior U.S. District Judge John L. Kane, who is presiding over the trial, recently issued an order dismissing the archdiocese as a plaintiff.

to the ones some Catholic schools have signed in the past for other kinds of publicly funded programs.

The lawsuit could have big implications for the new $322 million preschool program, which launched in August and enrolls more than 60% of the state’s 4-yearolds this year. A win for the Catholic preschools could bring more faithbased schools into the preschool program, but it could limit the state’s ability to set nondiscrimination policies for an education program that it pays for.

A win for the state could deter some faith-based preschools from participating, but it means families with LGBTQ parents or children couldn’t be shut out of preschools because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The trial is expected to last several days, with the judge making the decision.

Four witnesses testified for the Catholic preschools in early January, including the mother who said her family would have saved several thousand dollars if the Catholic preschool her 4-year-old attends had been able to participate in universal preschool this year.

Colorado’s universal preschool program offers 10 to 30 hours of tuition-free preschool a week to 4-year-olds. Families can pick preschool classrooms in public schools, private child care centers, faith-based programs, or state-licensed homes.

The two parish preschools that sued declined to join the program after the archdiocese instructed them not to sign the state’s nondiscrimination agreement, which prohibits discrimination based on religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity, among other factors. The lawsuit asserts that the nondiscrimination clause could prevent them from prioritizing children from Catholic families for enrollment, or force them to admit a child who identifies as a gender “at odds with their biological sex,” or a child whose parents “identify as gay or lesbian” or are “part of a same sex couple.”

The suit also argues that the state’s nondiscrimination rules would prohibit preschools from hiring employees who agree with the Catholic Church’s mission and teachings, including “that marriage is limited to one man and one woman for life.”

The lawsuit is one of two that religious preschools have filed over the state program. The other one, filed by a Christian preschool in Chaffee County that’s participating in the universal preschool program this year, also argues that the nondiscrimination provision could impede hiring, but didn’t focus on enrollment questions. A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction in October in that case, barring the state from punishing or withholding funds from the Chaffee County preschool even though some of its policies appear to violate the nondiscrimination agreement.

A third lawsuit was filed by several school districts last summer and deals with services and funding for preschoolers with disabilities as well as other high-needs students.

Nick Reaves, a lawyer for the Catholic preschools, said that in rare circumstances, schools overseen by the Archdiocese of Denver have turned away families on the

grounds that their beliefs or practices conflict with what the school teaches. He said there have been no complaints from any LGBTQ families about any of the 36 preschools that operate under the archdiocese.

During her testimony on Jan. 2, Avery Coats, principal of the preK-8 school operated by St. Bernadette’s, described turning away a prospective fifth-grade student because the parents were a same-sex couple and school officials worried Catholic teachings would cause confusion and conflict in the family.

Of the more than 1,900 preschools that joined Colorado’s universal program this year, 40 are faithbased. Together, they serve about 900 children. State rules allow faithbased preschools to give children in their congregations priority for enrollment. But beyond that, they don’t allow enrollment decisions based on a family’s religion or beliefs.

While some families choose religious preschools to match their faith, others choose them because the schools are close to their homes or jobs, or because they offer fullday care or flexible schedules.

Lawyers for the Catholic preschools asked a state witness to clarify what kind of enrollment restrictions or conditions preschools in the universal program are allowed to have. For example, Reaves asked, could a Jewish preschool, as a condition of enrollment, ask parents to sign a statement of faith saying they won’t eat pork and will keep kosher?

The witness, Michael Cooke, who helped roll out the universal preschool program, said that the question hadn’t come up before but that the state wouldn’t object to an enrollment condition based on the preschool’s particular program.

“Where we would object is if there was something in a statement that a family needed to sign or acknowledge that is contrary to anything that’s in statute or in policy or rule,” Cooke said.

The federal government said in a news release it’s addressed issues that have made the experience difficult. It will continue to make technical updates as needed.

The new Better FAFSA comes after years of advocates calling for a simplified FAFSA to cut down the number of questions on the form. This year, the federal government made it happen by cutting the number of questions from over a hundred to under 20 for most people. Fewer questions should mean an easier form that takes less time to complete.

The federal government also says more students will be eligible for federal student aid because of expanded income eligibility. The federal government announced on Monday the form is now accessible 24 hours a day.

The government says the form

should take about an hour, but make sure you aren’t in a rush. Clear your schedules for a few hours, just in case.

Families and students can also return to the form if they run into issues by saving their progress.

Should families wait to fill out the form?

This depends on who you ask.

While the U.S. Department of Education has said families have plenty of time, Keller said families should do it as soon as possible. About half of all families who fill out the FAFSA typically do so from October to December, and the delay means less time with counselors who can help with the logistics.

Although colleges won’t get students’ FAFSA information until February, many students need the FAFSA for other scholarships and free financial aid opportunities.

“You need to attempt to get your FAFSA completed as quickly as possible,” Keller said.

Despite the rocky start, the federal government announced over one million students have filled out the form since its launch. Families and students who plan to fill out the form should be ready.

Families should gather student and parent Social Security or Anumbers and financial documents such as bank and savings accounts or investment information.

Counselors across the state are paying attention to communication from the federal government about glitches in the system.

Families can also reach out to the Federal Student Aid helpdesk to troubleshoot problems, Garfield said.

When will families hear from schools?

The federal government will send the information to schools in February, Keller said.

Families should receive information from schools about potential financial aid information by late February or in March as long as nothing gets delayed, Keller said.

“Students will have their information hopefully by this spring to be able to make their decisions for next year,” she said.

But at 18, she’s also getting mentally prepared for what she anticipates would be a demanding, emotionally wrenching job.

“I think with dispatching it’s probably one of those jobs where you’re going to have to take a step back and take some time for yourself because it’s going to be stressful,” Tatman said. “I know that before even taking the class.”

Phoenix Fail, a sophomore, hopes to work as a dispatcher in college while studying to become a forensic pathologist “This can apply to you in real life, not just like a job,” Phoenix, 16, said.

“This can apply to friends if they’re going through something.”

Colorado Springs’ 911 Communications Center has long struggled to keep a full staff, with nearly 30 vacancies in October, according to The Gazette. The chronic shortages mean that instead of having 15 employees ready to take calls during the busiest times of the day — like the National Emergency Number Association standards recommend for that particular center — only seven or eight workers manned phones during those periods in the fall.

Brettell worked for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office for about 16 years, including running a work release program, patrolling and operating drones to locate missing people. Now as a teacher, he wants to both equip students with the basic information they will need to seamlessly deploy emergency resources and help them develop the endurance necessary to think clearly in a high-stress, high-stakes environment.

“Even though people are calling you on their worst day,” Brettell told his students, “the objective in dispatching is to make it go from their worst day to as best of a good day as possible.”

Other times in class, Brettell opens up about his own experiences with saving lives on the job or comforting someone he knew he was losing.

He held their hand. He talked to them. He told them everything is going to be OK. He watched their chest rise and fall one more time.

“It sucks, but at least I got to be there to do it,” Brettell said. “If I was in a car accident and dying, I would hope that there’d be someone there to at least spend it with me, not be alone.”

Katelynn Tatman, a junior at Calhan Public High School, enrolled

patch positions, with some candidates working their way through the hiring process, according to spokesperson Sergeant Marc Miller.

Call takers at Colorado Springs’ 911 Communications Center earn a yearly salary of about $57,680, which is one reason educators in Calhan and adjacent districts say dispatching is a promising option both for students who need a job while earning a college degree and for those who don’t necessarily look at college as their next step after high school.

Calhan Superintendent Dave Slothower started to see the potential in bringing a 911 dispatching class to his small district about a year ago, when he joined a group of local superintendents on a trip to Las Vegas to attend a conference focused on career and technical education. While there, Slothower visited Veterans Tribute Career and Technical Academy, where high schoolers can get a taste of a variety of public service fields, such as law enforcement, criminal justice and 911 dispatch.

“We were alerted to the fact that there’s a whole career and technical education pathway that we really hadn’t even explored,” Slothower said. “I think this is something we can replicate or should replicate.

It’s a viable career path for our kids that they may be interested in. This is the beauty of it, is that you get the chance to explore these things right now while you’re still in high

school.”

Calhan School District is continuing to develop its dispatch program with plans to construct a simulated call center where students can get firsthand experience with software used by dispatchers and practice fielding calls in a high-pressure environment.

Meanwhile, about 30 miles southeast of Calhan, students in Miami-Yoder School District are also learning about the mechanics of dispatching from Brettell, using technology to watch his lessons remotely. Their criminal justice teacher, Kevin Jaramillo, who also works as the district’s school resource officer, will get certified in dispatching later this school year and begin teaching students about handling 911 calls in future semesters.

High schoolers can quickly pick up the demands of 911 dispatching because they’ve grown up with technology and are used to “a fastpaced life,” said Jaramillo, who previously worked for the La Junta Police Department for nearly five years.

“Their minds are already going 100 miles an hour,” he said. “All they need is a little help tweaking and adjusting their mindset, and that’s to handle the screaming and maybe hearing gunshots on the phone.”

Offensive coordinators-turnedhead coaches make for decades of success at Dakota Ridge High School. At least, that was the case for legendary coach Ron Woitalewicz, who recently announced his retirement following 20 years of winning at the Littleton school.

Now, his longtime partner in crime is stepping into the big chair.

But Jeremiah Behrendsen has worn many hats on his way to head coach at Dakota Ridge since he was hired at the school two decades ago.

“It’s always exciting for a change, even when we’ve had such a good thing for so long,” Behrendsen said.

“Luckily we’ve got a lot of coaches and kids who are coming back and are excited about it.”

Behrendsen has taught math at

Dakota Ridge since being hired in 2004 and now teaches physical education. On top of being on the football sidelines all that time, he also coached JV baseball from 2004 to 2008.

He began as the freshman offensive coordinator before becoming the head JV football coach in 2005.

In 2010, he became the varsity offensive coordinator and assistant head coach and has been in that role ever since.

“Having been there as long as I have, it’s always been a goal of mine to eventually (become the head coach),” Behrendsen said. “But honestly, I loved just being at that school so much. The people within my department for the last 19 years are just super great people, some of my best friends … My family lives a mile from the school. My kiddos go to school in the area. It’s home for us.”

Bringing on a familiar face as the first new coach in 20 years is reassuring, and the continuity is a strength for the program, but it also comes with immediate expectations.

Behrendsen said his family lives within a mile of Dakota Ridge High School, and he couldn’t be happier to step into the head coach’s chair at the place he calls home.

Since 2004, Dakota Ridge has suffered just one losing season (20112012). Woitalewicz built a consistent powerhouse that’s always in the running come postseason play.

In 2023, the Eagles finished 8-4 and 4-0 in the 4A Mountain West League.

“We’ve been on a really nice run, and we’ve been really fortunate with the kids in the Dakota Ridge area

wanting to stay and go to school here,” Behrendsen said. “And we’ve got a really fun group of kids right now … it’s an exciting time.”

CHSAA poised to adopt shot clock for 2026 school year and that didn’t have a bye to schedule a contest within two weeks of the first day of practice.

Football practice is due to begin the week of Aug. 11 this year. The agenda packet said adding an extra week to play games will make it easier to schedule game officials.

It could also create one to two bye weeks during the season.

The committee could also act on a proposal to cap sub-varsity volleyball team’s number of matches at 23, not including regional and state tournaments. That schedule limit is already in place for varsity teams.

The down side, the agenda said, is extra costs for game officials and/or transportation.

In girls softball, there’s a proposal to eliminate the double-elimination regional brackets for both class 4A and 5A teams.

“With several schools (4A and 5A) playing games on different days, different formats and/or same day, we have created an equity issue for our student-athletes,” the agenda said.

Class 3A schools, such as Fort Lupton High School, use the same number of teams in the so-called round of 32, Two teams advance from each regional to the state tournament.

The proposal would make the format consistent across all three classifications. Also, the agenda said, host schools that have just one field would not be able to host at their home site.

There is a financial impact, especially for schools that play on two days.

“If we eliminate the two-day option, there will be less of a financial impact for all traveling schools.,” the agenda said “This also helps those schools who have to rent a complex to host their regional tournament.”

The proposal did not get a vote to move out of the association’s softball committee.

AURORA - The Colorado High School Activities Association is ready for its boys and girls basketball teams to use a shot clock starting in the 2026-2027 season.

All that’s left is a vote by its legislative council to amend a basketball committee report and make the rule official.

The council meets Jan. 30, at the Douglas County School District Legacy Campus, 10035 S. Peoria St., Lone Tree. It’s the first of two decision-making meetings for the council this school year.

The association is following a rule put forth by the National Federation of High Schools in 2021. All levels of boys and girls basketball will use a 35-second shot clock. According to the agenda, 27 state associations use a shot clock in some form or other.

Among the advantages are no more stalling, thus reducing the number of possessions in each game, and preparation for players to use a shot clock while playing college ball. The disadvantages are costs to financially strapped districts. The agenda packet pegged the price tag at between $2,500 and $5,000 during a time when school budgets are already tight. Another potential issue is associated costs to train and pay people to run the shot clock.

The council is expected to vote on a proposal to move up the beginning of the spring sports season by a week.

The main reason is longstanding.

events. It’s also a common weekend for high-school graduations.

One potential issue wouldn’t take place that often. The agenda packet said there will be one more week of so-called “crossover” time between

Nearly two feet of snow adds powder and opens lifts at Loveland Ski Area The Clear Creek County ski area was inundated with fresh snow over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend

A mid-January snowstorm meant frigid temperatures and dangerous driving for Clear Creek County residents and tourists, but skiers and snowboarders are smiling, according to Loveland Ski Area Marketing Manager Dustin Schaefer.

“Skiing and snowboarding conditions are just amazing up here, lots of powder, lots of smiles, people are pretty stoked on the snow that just came in,” Schaefer said.

This after what Schaefer described as a “slow start” to the season. More than 25 inches fell on the mountain in just 72 hours during the MLK holiday weekend, according to snow reports.

The additional snow allows Loveland Ski Area to make more of the mountain available to skiers and boarders.

us out a ton. We opened up some of the steeps off of Chet’s Dream,” Schaefer said.

The ski patrol is currently working to open lifts four, eight, and nine in the coming days as snow and equipment allows, Schaefer said.

“It’s looking like it’s going to be a good season,” he added.

Loveland Ski Area will operate seven days a week, continuing through Closing Day in early May. Lifts will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends and designated holidays.
