For Randy Smith, the new year was a time to remember two community members lost to preventable accidents. Smith is the founder and head of Bridging Over, a nonprofit focused on keeping the homeless community safe on the street. On Dec. 24, he led a vigil at West Colfax and Teller with a handful of people who all came to remember two homeless wheelchair users in the Lakewood community.

According to Smith, their deaths occurred in an area known to be unsafe for pedestrians and also something the city is aware of.

“It’s called the West Colfax safety project,” Smith said describing the Lakewood project to address the safety of pedestrians in the area.

“It’s between Sheridan and Teller, a 1.5-mile section. That’s the most dangerous part of Colfax.”

Bridging Over has been handing out safety kits to the homeless community along West Colfax and other high-traffic areas around Lakewood.

“On October 31, 2022, the reflective vest project came to life. We’ve distributed a little over 200 reflective vests between our events last year,” Smith said.

The recent deaths of homeless pedestrians in wheelchairs prompted Smith to offer reflectors for wheelchairs.

“I did some research on it and the chairs don’t come with reflectors,” Smith said. So, he and his team at Bridging Over designed and printed reflective stickers. They spent fall 2023 installing them on wheelchairs.

However, that is not enough.

Smith said the most recent death involved a big truck.

in the December accident. Now, Bridging Over is offering flags for wheelchairs in their safety kits.

Smith believes the need for safety gear is increasing with the amount of construction happening and planned in Lakewood. This demand was evident in the number of safety kits that he handed out during the Christmas Eve vigil.

“We usually serve about 65 people on any given day,” Smith said.

“Christmas Eve, it was within an hour and a half, we served 70 people alone. And that’s not including the camps that I went to afterward.”

Smith visited eight homeless encampments after the vigil to distribute safety kits.

The kits are given free of charge,

but Bridging Over does pay for them. And the nonprofit needs your help.

“The goal is to raise enough for the first 100 safety flags and waterproof safety stickers for wheelchairs,” Smith said. “Of course, we want to raise more.”

To do so, Smith will be announcing four upcoming fundraisers.

I Bought Some Jeffco Property Tax Liens at Auction; Here’s What I Learned

In Colorado, if you haven’t paid your property taxes by June, your county sells the resulting tax lien at auction a few months later. In Jefferson County, that auction was held online over Nov. 6 and 7, and I decided to buy a few in Golden, where I live, to learn about the process so I could share it with you, my readers.

This year, 85 other buyers and I purchased a total of 1,130 tax liens totaling $6.4 million, paying a premium of $400,415 or 6.25% more overall than what was actually owed in property taxes plus accrued interest and fees by the property owners. The county treasurer received the $6.4 million on behalf of the properties’ respective tax districts, and the $400,415 went to the county’s general fund.

The reason people purchase tax liens is to pocket the 15% interest that is added to the taxes owed. When the property owner “redeems” his property, he basically pays the lien holder the amount of the lien plus interest from the date of the sale through the date of redemption.

Thus, if the taxpayer takes a year to pay it, I earn 15% interest minus the premium which I paid. If he redeems it soon after I have purchased the lien, I

lose money depending on how much I bid up the lien amount.

I chatted with a fellow lien buyer and learned his technique for making money on tax liens. He researches each property owner to determine whether he’s likely to pay quickly, slowly, or not at all. For example, was he delinquent in prior years?

I didn’t do any of that research, so I have no idea whether a year or two from now I will be counting my profits or my losses on the four liens I purchased. I’ll chalk up any losses to the cost of publishing this column!

Statistically, 7% of tax liens are redeemed within a month of the sale, 22% within 3 months, and 38% within 6 months. It’s been two months since the sale, and none of my four tax liens have been redeemed. All but 4% of purchased tax liens are redeemed within 4 years.

In the next column is a chart showing how many tax liens were sold at auction since 2001, so you can see that this year’s numbers are not much different than in prior years. The $6.4 million figure is higher than last year, but can be attributed in part to the increase in assessed valuation of Jeffco properties.

I was impressed at how easy it was for buyers to participate.

Colorado’s Healthy Meals for All program sees dramatic increase in daily meals served

On any given day, as many as 400 students pass through Andrea Cisneros’s lunch line at West Woods Elementary in Arvada. Depending on the meal, that number is roughly 100-200 more than she’s used to serving in prior years.

The increased demand is due to the voter-approved Healthy School Meals for All initiative run by the Colorado Department of Education. The program allows all students access to free school meals regardless of family income.

When the bill passed, many speculated more students would take

advantage of the program because it would reduce the stigma associated with qualifying for free or reduced lunch and eliminate financial constraints for others. Yet, no one knew for sure.

After five months, the verdict is in.

Ellie Agar, director of communications for Hunger-Free Colorado, the organization that led the campaign to pass the HSMA program, confirmed schools are seeing an average increase of 30-40% in lunch and breakfast participation.

“The increase is even higher among students who previously didn’t participate in free or reduced-priced lunch either due to income or stigma,” Agar said.

Cisneros, kitchen manager and 23-year Jefferson County school district veteran said she sees the impact on low-income families daily.

“One mom of three kids in my school missed qualifying for free lunch by $1 last year,” Cisneros said. “She used to worry constantly about how to feed her kids lunch.

It’s been a huge burden lifted from her shoulders.”

Cisneros also sees how free meals have changed students’ attitudes toward going through the lunch line.

“I’ve been told it’s now cool to get your food for free. There’s no stigma — everyone just gets to eat.”

Cisneros said she used to risk get-

ting reprimanded for giving kids who had nothing to eat without charging them, but she couldn’t stand letting any child in her school go hungry. It makes her happy to know that it’s no longer an issue.

According to Agar, parents can save more than $1,250 per student each year, alleviating financial stress while food and living costs rise.

Feeding more students doesn’t come without challenges, however.

Kitchens remain understaffed, and Cisneros says by the time some kids get through the line, they’ve sold out of meals, or the student has little time to eat before lunch is over.

Passport Palooza in Jefferson County: 6 things to know

The first annual Passport Palooza was held in 2023 to help residents with their passport processing. According to Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder Amanda Gonzalez, the event was successful and warranted an encore. The next Passport Palooza runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 11 at the Jefferson County Administration Building, 100 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden.

Passport Palooza was created to help county residents get appointments for their passport needs.

The Clerk and Recorder’s office increased its staff for the 8-hour firstcome, first-serve event.

Sarah McAfee, chief communications and engagement officer for the Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder’s office, offered some insight on Passport Palooza 2024.

Here are six things she said people should know: 1. Fill out the application slowly.

According to McAfee, many people had to redo their applications at least twice, and some people up to four times.

“They made errors in the fields, such as birth location, maiden name, etc. This was especially common when spouses filled the form out for each other,” McAfee said.

Fill out the application slowly and recheck the information as you go to avoid and catch errors.

2. Don’t sign the application.

There is one field that must be left incomplete. That’s the signature and date at the end.

McAfee said that applications must be unsigned when coming to Passport Palooza. The signatures are done as instructed by employees of the clerk’s office, so leave it blank.

3. Bring the proper photocopies and TWO checks or money orders.

According to McAfee, people get confused or forget the duplicates

required for the application.

“Another super common error is not bringing photocopies of your IDs or two checks or money orders,” she said. “Payment has to go to two different agencies, so two checks are required. Cash and credit can’t be accepted.”

4. Simple renewals can be done online.

Passport Palooza is for the types of passport applications that normally require an appointment.

According to McAfee, renewing a passport is not one of those issues.

“The most common error was more of a misunderstanding: many folks showed up hoping for a simple passport renewal, but those are done online as long as the passport is less than five years expired,” McAfee explained.

5. Come in for lost or stolen passports, too.

One passport issue that does require an appointment is the lost passport. McAfee said that lost or stolen passports can be handled at Passport Palooza. Just fill out and bring the lost or stolen passport form.

6. Expect to leave without a passport.

One last misconception about Passport Palooza is that applicants will leave with a passport. McAfee said that was not the case.

“No, you will not leave with a passport. Only the Department of State can issue those, but application processing is done by a variety of certified offices like USPS or Jeffco,” McAfee explained.

“Appointments for application processing can be hard to come by, so this event takes that hurdle away. It will still be 7-10 weeks to receive your passport in the mail (for regular processing, expedited is faster).”

Polis pitches pollinator protection Governor unveils health study at Butterfly Pavilion event

As vivid groups of butterflies flitted above his head Wednesday, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis produced a plan the state’s scientists and wildlife officials hope will head off an “insect apocalypse.”

The 308-page Colorado Native Pollinating Insects Health Study is the first-of-its-kind probe into pollinator health in Colorado. The study was authorized under SB22-199, sponsored by state senators Sonya Jaquez Lewis and Kevin Priola, and representatives Cathy Kipp and Meg Froelich.

The study gauges the health of Colorado’s native pollinators and makes recommendations on how to protect native pollinators in Colorado, Polis told a crowd at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster on Jan. 3.

“This is a landmark event,” Polis said. “This will help us with a path forward to preserving the state’s pollinators.”

Colorado is home to various native insects and bats who pollinate the state’s farms and ranches, flowering plants and the state’s ecosystem, Polis said. Pollinators are also key to the state’s economy.

“From Crested Butte’s beautiful spring meadows to Palisade peaches and Rocky Ford melons, Colorado’s pollinators sustain our flora and enable many foundational industries in every corner of the state,” Polis said in a news release. “As our climate changes, we must safeguard the pollinators that generate and regenerate the Colorful Colorado we love.”

Colorado is home to over 1,000 species of bees – nearly 30% of North America’s and about 5% of the world’s bee species – and nearly 300 species of butterflies. That represents over 40% of the diversity of butterflies in North America north of Mexico, some of which are already listed under the federal Endangered Species Act, according to the news release.

Many pollinators – including bees – are facing worldwide extinction from loss of habitat and from the harmful use of pesticides, Richard Reading,

vice president of science and preservation at the Butterfly Pavilion.

“So much of our food comes from pollinators and I don’t think many people know the implications,” Reading said.

After years of ignoring the problem, some work is being done to preserve pollinators, he said. The European Union has banned some pesticides that wipe out bees and other key insects.

“There is real effort to apply pesticides more precisely so that whole groups of helpful insects aren’t killed,” Reading said.

Pollinator districts are also emerging to allow the insects to thrive in pesticide-free zones, Reading said.

“There is work going across the world …to restore their habitats,” he said. “If nothing is done, all pollinators will die off in a few generations.

“It will simply be an insect apocalypse,” Reading said.

The state already promotes policies that benefit native pollinating insects including enhancing pollinator-friendly native plantings along I-76 following its designation as a Colorado Pollinator Highway by the Colorado Department of Transportation, according to the news release.

Areas of immediate action and priorities highlighted by the Pollinator Report, according to the news release, include: Priority 1: Protect imperiled native pollinating insects. Priority 2: Protect, restore and connect pollinator habitats. Priority 3: Mitigate environmental changes that negatively impact pollinators and their habitats.

Priority 4: Reduce the risks from pesticides to pollinating insects. Priority 5: Monitor and support native and manage pollinator health.

Polis’s annual budget includes $100,000 to support education and incentives to encourage the use of pesticide alternatives in agriculture production and residential or commercial landscaping, according to the news release.

Colorado’s First Gentleman Marlon Reis, who also serves as the honorary chair of the Butterfly Pavilion’s Board of Directors, said the pollinator report will work as a guide as the state pursues pro-pollinator policies.

“We haven’t always seen how linked we all are,” Reis said. “This gives us a roadmap to make things better.”

BUTTERFLY PAVILION SUMMER CAMPS COMING The Butterfly Pavilion will have new and doubled capacity for its upcoming 2024 summer camps with registration opening on Jan. 8.

Summer Rosie’s Discovery Camps for the summer offers “children the opportunity to embrace their inner explorer, exploring Butterfly Pavilion’s exhibits and gardens through education activities and creating educational crafts,” according to a Pavilion news release.

The Pavilion offers camps for ages 5-6, 7-9 and 10-12.

Butterfly Pavilion’s new offsite summer camps near the Denver Metro area offer a variety of experiences and intend to introduce children to the “extraordinary world of invertebrates,” the news release states.

The five-day summer camps will be held Monday-Friday, and the various themes include Aquatic Adventures, Spineless Superheroes, Natures Engineers, and river Quest.

All camps for ages 5-9 are on site at Butterfly Pavilion. Camps for ages 10-12 are hosted at various locations and include a field trip to Butterfly Pavilion.

Cisneros is up for National Education Association Support Professional of the Year. The winner will be announced in March.

Cisneros recently won Education Support Professional of the Year by the Colorado Education Association for her efforts to boycott junk food from her school and begin a composting program that teaches kids about recycling and reducing food waste.

She was part of a bargaining effort on behalf of the Jefferson Education Support Professional Association that successfully won a pilot program to begin working with local farmers to provide fresh

Agar acknowledged the issue and noted that districts could apply for grants for more local purchasing, scratch cooking training, and wage boosts for front-line staff next year.

She’s hoping the wage increases will help address some of these issues.

Parents have also communicated that they’d like more fresh and culturally relevant options in the coming years. While those plans are in the works, Agar said families can partner with school districts through student and parent advisory committees to help provide students with more enticing food.

A Cumbia New Years celebration Latin dance genre a hit at Salon Ocampo

The New Year didn’t arrive quietly at Denver’s Salon Ocampo, which gave the old year a loud goodbye with lights, screens, dance and music.

Salon Ocampo is no stranger to the Mexican music scene. The event center brought four Sonideros who joined Denver-based performers the Grupo Kaoba to give a bright welcome to the New Year Dec. 30.

As owner of Salon Ocampo Ivan Sosa, who performed at the event as DJ Barrio Sonidero, was excited to host the final event of the year featuring Cumbia Sonidera.

Sosa manages two to three Cumbia Sonidera events per year, aside from hosting quinceañeras and weddings at Salon Ocampo.

His preparation for the Cumbia Sonidera event started a week and a half before the event, and Sosa worked with his peers to set up screens, speakers, lights, and audio to ensure a strong party atmosphere for the end of the year.

The inspiration behind having an event of Cumbia Sonidera came

from Sosa’s love of the music of Mexico.

“I love the Sonidera music, especially here in Denver, Colorado, I have given it my all with the audio.

Music has been my life and the audio too since I was a kid. I’ve always done it,” Sosa said.

The Cumbia Sonidera subgenre has a long history. Cumbia comes from Colombia but has expanded over time to different regions of Mexico and the United States. This expansion allows different people to discover Cumbia and give their unique twist to the genre of music.

Rene Perez, who has been a Sonidero for 42 years and is a part of Amistad Caracas, explains that the Sonideros themselves set Cumbia Sonidera apart from other types of Cumbia. The Sonideros are a crucial and distinct feature of this subgenre.

“The DJ doesn’t speak, but a Sonidero does. The DJ mixes the Sonidera music and brings in different types of music that the DJ dedicates himself to,” Perez said.

“With mixed music, you need to learn the beats and mixing, but the Sonidero doesn’t. He feels the music, and we are used to the bass.”

The Sonidero speaks and sends shout-outs on their behalf or from requests of the people, he said. It helps create a sense of community

in the music, which is important to the neighborhoods in Mexico City.

“We try to transmit what the people like,” Perez said.

Sonidera around the globe

Although the origins of Cumbia Sonidera are not well known, many say that the subgenre of music took flight in the neighborhoods of Mexico City. Cumbia Sonidera keeps growing in terms of fans and in style.

Inspired by Mexico City’s Cumbia Sonidera, performers in Ecuador have developed their own style called Cumbia Villera. Now, new generations are mixing the Reggae-

ton genre – itself a mix of Reggae and Latin dance hall music – into Cumbia Sonidera. This subgenre continues to evolve and Sonidera beats can be heard through the heartbeats of many Latinos.

The Cumbia Sonidera event of El Ocampo did its best to capture the essence of the dances in Mexico City, inviting musicians like Amistad Caracas who traveled from Mexico to be part of the event as well as Grupo Kaoba. Sosa used his memories of dances in Mexico City and his love for the music to create an authentic event.

A ‘snow drought’ is leaving the West’s mountains high and dry

Across the West, the winter is off to a dry start. Wide swaths of the Rocky Mountains have lower-than-average snow totals for this time of year, but scientists say there’s still plenty of time to end the “snow drought” and close the gap.

High-altitude snowpack has big implications for the region’s water supply. Two-thirds of the Colorado River’s water starts as snow in Colorado’s mountains before melting and flowing to about 40 million people across seven states.

Nearly every part of Colorado, Utah

and Wyoming has significantly less snow than usual for late December.

The latest data from a region-wide network of snow sensors shows snow in many areas with snow totals around 60 or 70% of normal.

“It’s really going to be dependent on what we see in January and February,” said Becky Bolinger, Colorado’s assistant state climatologist. “We’re really going to need an active January and February to make up these deficits and be okay.”

Last year, big snows in the Rockies helped boost the Colorado River’s major reservoirs. Policymakers said the snowy winter lifted some pressure off of tense negotiations about shar-

ing the river’s water in the future.

Even a few consecutive wet winters aren’t enough to seriously fix the supply-demand imbalance that fuels the West’s water crisis. More than 20 years of dry conditions, fueled by climate change, have shrunk the Colorado River’s water supply, and policymakers have been unable to agree on significant, long-term cutbacks to water use.

Experts say it would take five or six consecutive above-average winters to close that supply-demand gap, which is unlikely to happen as climate change makes the region warmer and drier.

Dan McEvoy, regional climatologist at the Western Regional Climate Center and Desert Research Institute, said last year’s wet winter was an “anomaly.”

“Lots of data, lots of research, projections, modeling, all point to this continuing trend of warmer winters, less snow and in some cases, less precipitation,” he said.

Last year’s snowy conditions did deliver one major positive for the Colorado River — soaking the soil and helping this year’s snow reach the streams, rivers and reservoirs where people collect water. Dry soil acts like a sponge and soaks up runoff. After a high-snow winter, the soggy soil will help make sure a higher percentage of the next year’s snowfall reaches waterways.

Despite the low snow, ski resorts may not be feeling much financial pain. Chad Dyer, managing director of ski website OnTheSnow, said a lot of ski traffic around the holidays is coming from tourists who cemented their plans in advance.

“Their flights are booked, their lodging is booked. As long as the ski resort is open and has got a product, by and large, they’re going to visit,” Dyer said.

That high volume of pre-purchased lift tickets allows ski resorts to depend less on ticket sales that may ebb and flow with the quality of ski conditions.

The next few weeks are unlikely to bring much immediate relief for Western mountains.

“The medium– to long–range forecasts that go out about two weeks are not super promising,” McEvoy said.

“There are some signs of some smaller storms that can impact parts of the West. But overall, it’s a pretty dry forecast.”

What should we call that 14er above Crestone?

It’s called Kit Carson, but BIG PIVOTS a state advisory board in January will review alternatives more acceptable to the Diné and others

M

y hike up Kit Carson Peak in June 2000 began with great ambition and ended with confusion.

Confusion remains now, almost 24 years later, if in a different way. We’re not sure what to call the 14,167-foot summit in the Sangre de Cristo Range.

My 12 hours above treeline that day left me hypoxic, my brain suffering from too little oxygen. I insisted that the route down took us the west side of Willow Lake, but my companions knew better.

Now I contemplate what to call Kit Carson from the floor of the San Luis Valley. A proposal before the Colorado Geographic Naming Advisory Board would have us call it Frustum Peak. A frustum is a flat-topped cone or pyramid.

Still others prefer Crestone, as was considered — but rejected — by a federal board in 2011. Two other 14,000foot peaks, Crestone Peak and Crestone Needle, lie a short distance away.

Three 14ers named Crestone? One stone too many. Other names may yet be considered.

Colorado also has a town and a county named Kit Carson, but neither

is up for change as they are not on federal land.

The state advisory board members will resume their discussion on Jan. 24. They will also review alternatives to Garfield County’s Dead Mexican Gulch, Jefferson County’s Redskin Creek and Redskin Alleen Best Mountain and Montezuma County’s Negro Draw.

Whatever they recommend will be just that. The U.S. Board of Geographic Names has final authority for names on federal lands as Colorado seeks to cleanse its geographic drawers of names with tawdry historical footnotes. Earlier this year, the 14er west of Denver gained a new name, Blue Sky. It had been called Evans, after the territorial governor in 1864 who seemingly turned a blind eye to the Sand Creek Massacre.

Blood and Thuder

Christopher Houston “Kit” Carson has a more confused and interesting story. Born in Kentucky, reared in Missouri, he fled an apprenticeship in leathermaking for western adventures.

As a fur trapper, he was quite successful. He survived.

Like other trappers, he found friends – and foes – among the native Americans, taking two of them as spouses.

One called it quits, putting his belongings outside their teepee, as was the custom.

Taos was his favored home. His remains are buried there along with those of Josefa, his final wife. They both died in southeastern Colorado, at Boggsville, near today’s Las Animas. By then, he was General Carson in the U.S. Army.

Consult “Blood and Thunder,” by Hampton Sides, for an immensely rewarding read about Carson. Sides acknowledges the complexities of Carson and other frontiersmen. “The mountain men lived with Indians, fought alongside and against them, loved them, married them, buried them, gambled and smoked with them,” he writes.

Trappers unwittingly left a more damning legacy.

“As the forerunners of Western civilization, creeping up the river valleys and across the mountain passes, the trappers brought smallpox and typhoid, they brought guns and whiskey and venereal disease, they brought the puzzlement of money and the gleam of steel. And on their liquored breath they whispered the coming of an unimaginable force, of a gathering shadow on the eastern horizon, gorging itself on the continent as it pressed steadily this way.”

That is the conundrum of Carson. It‘s also the question many of us ask ourselves. Will we leave the world a better place – or worse? Or both?

While in the U.S. Army, Carson was responsible for corralling the recalcitrant Navajo, who had long been feared

by Spanish, Hispanic and Anglo settlers because of their persistent raiding and sometimes killing. He complained to

superiors about the lack of provisions for the Navajo as he marched them to an encampment in eastern New Mexico. Once there, a third died.

Afterward, although gravely ill, Carson accompanied Ute leaders to Washington D.C. at their request to represent them in meetings with President Ulysses Grant and others.

His story was complicated.

Carson was mythologized in his own time. Today, we tend to idealize Native Americans even while we fail, in some important ways, to pay them their due, such as their water rights in the Colorado River Basin.

A former newspaper columnist in Colorado Springs responded to my ruminations on Facebook with this: “In our re-naming craze, we should not name anything after humans anymore.

It turns out that all humans put their pants on one leg at a time.”

Conquerors generally name things in their own honor. Sometimes, we do honor the vanquished.

To honor Utes, among Colorado’s 14ers we also have Antero, Shavano, and Tabeguache. We have none to honor Navajos, who call themselves Diné. If they emphatically dislike Kit Carson, so far they have not proposed a replacement.

We already have a Conundrum Peak, near Aspen.

I suggest Complicated Peak. Mount Confusion could work, too.

‘The Wind’ premieres at Su Teatro

complex character isn’t enough, Van Fleet plays all the characters she confronts throughout the story.

“You can’t ask for better in this town than Emily and working on this with her has been a total joy,” Nehls said. “She is so versatile and can play so many emotions. Best of all, she’s not afraid of a challenge.”

Musically, Nehls says the show has an operetta feel to it, with a lot of text working its way into the story. He was inspired by major film composers, like Bernard Herrmann, who frequently collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock, but also provides the show a bit of a pop ballad as well.

While the show is only playing for one day only, the hope is that it could lead to a larger production.

But regardless, Nehls is just excited to get it in front of audience.

“We’re going to make it as perfect as we can and see what the experience will be like,” he said. “I hope it provides a glance at a historical period and reminds people that things aren’t that different now. There is definitely a lesson to be learned from the show.”

Doris Lavon Rons, formerly of Lakewood, CO, passed away December 20, 2023 at the age 90. Mrs. Rons was born February 17, 1933 in Arcadia, KS and was a graduate of Arcadia High School. She was married to Leo Rons on December 26, 1960. Mrs. Rons was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Clarke’s Concert of the Week — Colter Wall at Mission Ballroom

I get a little leery anytime someone describes an artist as a “real” representative of any particular genre, but I don’t know how else to describe Canada’s Colter Wall other than to say he’s real western music.

His arrangements are most often simple and direct and yet the power of his baritone cuts through all the noise and just grabs the listener — it has been out for years, but “Night Herding Song,” still knocks me back.

LIFE Wringing out the new year Dry January attracts sober curious

W

hile it’s long been trendy for New Year’s resolutions to focus on improving health, a growing group of people is tackling that goal by participating in Dry January.

Dry January is a 31-day challenge to not drink any alcoholic beverages, serving as a sort of cleanse after the winter holidays when it’s common to drink more excessively. According to a February 2023 poll from CivicScience, 16% of American adults abstained from alcohol last year for the challenge.

There’s a multitude of physical and mental health benefits from cutting out alcohol, even temporarily, said Jill Hefti Breed, a family nurse practitioner at AdventHealth, such as better sleep, improved blood pressure, reduced indigestion and potential weight loss.

Hefti Breed cited a 2018 study on Dry January participants that corroborated the advantages of going alcohol-free.

“By week one, you’re sleeping better, you have better decision-making, you’re more creative and you tend to have better eating patterns,” she said. “The liver gets a chance to clear out fats, which even for a month can be quite beneficial. We also see that with the stomach if it’s inflamed from alcohol.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends women limit drinking to one drink per day and men limit drinks to two per day.

Hefti Breed said even drinking the recommended amount comes with a higher risk for some cancers.

She pointed to break periods, like Dry January, as a tool to evaluate how alcohol impacts an individual’s quality of life.

“Don’t be afraid to talk to your health care provider and ask questions because you won’t be labeled and there’s no dumb questions,” Hefti Breed said.

Kayla Phillips, general manager at Golden Moon Speakeasy, said her own experience with Dry January prompted her to create a mocktail program at the bar in 2021 that focuses on maintaining the experience that comes with drinking craft cocktails.

Options for teetotalers at Golden Moon aren’t the typical bitters and soda water or juice mixes that most bars offer. That’s because the mocktails, which are crafted with housemade ingredients, include mimics of

the bar’s popular original drinks and unique combinations of teas, syrups, juices and sodas.

“I wanted to make drinks that were clearly intentional,” she said. “For the house classics that are a staple on our menu, I wanted to make nonalcoholic twins of those so it doesn’t even have to look like you’re not drinking.”

Phillips said her goal with her mocktail options is to make it worth the value and equal in experience to a cocktail.

For example, the bar serves a drink called Phoenix Down, which is a play on a smoked whiskey old fashioned that comes in both alcoholic and alcohol-free options. Both options come with a fancy presentation where the drinks are smoked and served tableside.

“When we pour the drink from the bottle (it’s mixed in) to the glass, the smoke comes out before the liquid does and gives a really cool effect,” Phillips said. “It adds a wow factor and I think especially when people order nonalcoholic, they’re not expecting a full show.”

Since the speakeasy started offering its nonalcoholic options, they have gotten more popular across a broad spectrum, Phillips said.

“It’s not only people who are interested in only mocktails, but it’s a good option for people who aren’t trying to drink all night or want to alternate,” she said. “I see more mocktail orders in these months because I think people get overwhelmed with holiday drinking obligations.”

This January, Phillips is supporting her customers who have health resolutions by creating a seasonal menu of drinks, with and without liquor, that use less sugar and highlight superfoods, such as a carrot turmeric tonic.

For Dry January participants who want to avoid the temptation of a bar, but still want to enjoy group activities and social events, The Phoenix provides in-person and online sober get-togethers throughout the state.

Vince Huseman, community engagement manager for The Phoenix, said the concept started in Boulder in 2006 with the desire to maintain an active social life without substances. Volunteers organize fitness and entertainment activities, such as CrossFit, comedy nights, dance parties and hikes, all across the state that are free for sober participants.

Huseman said the events are inclusive of people who are in recovery, fully sober, sober-curious and sober allies. He added that activities are accessible to people of all abilities and skill levels. The only participation requirement is to be sober for 48 hours before the event.

“We make our events accessible for everyone and will tailor activities so that even folks with no experience can participate,” Huseman said. “Folks will come for our events that we lead, but I think they stay for the community.”

The group works to build a community of people who don’t imbibe in an effort to make the choice to not drink easier and help reduce stigma around sobriety and recovery, Huseman said.

“I think when you’re with other people who are also sober or evaluating their relationship with alcohol, it helps you build a foundation for your sobriety,” he said. “Some of the events we’ve produced, such as our Denver Pride dance party, are really setting a new standard for sober fun.”

On Jan. 25, The Phoenix is hosting its third annual open mic night, featuring a dozen performers with music, comedy and poetry at Free Spiritual Community in Denver. Huseman said he recommends the event to anyone interested in joining The Phoenix for the first time.

Denver’s migrant influx highest per capita in the nation as Democrats call for help

As the number of Venezuelan migrants living in Denver hotels and camping on sidewalks rises by the day, Colorado’s two senators and five Democratic U.S. representatives are demanding the federal government pay for more emergency shelter.

In a letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Democrats said communities coping with an increase in the number of migrants who need housing and food should have access to the agency’s Shelter and Services Program, which pays to house migrants who are awaiting the outcome of immigration proceedings.

Denver has been hardest hit by the yearlong migrant crisis among cities across the nation, with Mayor Mike Johnston claiming his city has received more migrants per capita than any other. Nearly 36,000 migrants have arrived in Denver over the past year, many of them claiming asylum after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas. In December alone, 144 buses dropped off migrants in Denver, at the pace of 100-200 people per day.

The city has already spent $34 million setting up emergency shelters, in-

cluding renting rooms in seven hotels throughout Denver. The number of people in hotels surpassed 4,400 this week, the highest yet during the yearlong influx.

The number of people sheltered in hotels has doubled just since November, when the Denver Department of Human Services lifted the time limit for families. Single migrants can stay in the hotels for only 14 days, and many have moved into tents on city sidewalks.

An encampment outside the Quality Inn near the corner of Speer Boulevard and Zuni Street has grown so large, stretching multiple blocks and including hundreds of people, that the city plans this week to bus people to shelters and remove the tents, furniture and barbecue grills that have accumulated along the street.

Buses were expected to start shuttling people a week ago to two congregate shelters — one in a city building and another at a church — that will have mats lined on the floor and shower trailers parked outside. The City Council, meanwhile, approved $330,000 to help pay people’s first months of rent, and city employees have been talking to people in the camp all week, warning that they must

vacate and inviting them to apply for housing assistance.

The city has helped 300 people fill out rental applications, including 95 so far who’ve found apartments, said Jon Ewing, spokesman for Denver Human Services. For those who have a job, the city is paying their first month’s rent. People still looking for work could receive up to three months of rent, he said.

Migrants who are living on the street can stay in one of the two congregate shelters for up to 30 days. “This is not a sweep,” he said. “We are literally pulling them off the street and trying to get them into a site where they will be healthier, where they will be safer, where they can go take a shower.”

The city is also offering them bus tickets to other cities, since Denver is close to exhausting its hotel and apartment space, Ewing said.

“If it didn’t work out here, if it isn’t what you expected, if it’s a little colder than expected, we will be buying you a ticket,” he said. “We are leveling with everyone when we say we only have limited resources. We only have so much money. There are only so many affordable units in Denver. People are starting to understand.”

Other cities with a huge number of

newcomers from South America include Chicago and New York, while some places have seen far fewer migrants.

Denver already has purchased thousands of one-way bus tickets to other cities, mainly New York and Chicago, at migrants’ request. Of the 36,000 migrants who’ve come to Denver in the past year, at least 9,000 were sent by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, according to the letter from Colorado Democrats in Congress. Buses from the Texas governor’s office have arrived without warning, often in the middle of the night and sometimes in front of the state Capitol.

The letter — signed by Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, and U.S. Reps. Jason Crow, Diana DeGette, Joe Neguse, Yadira Caraveo and Brittany Pettersen — said the migrant population is straining state and local government, as well as nonprofits that are trying to house and feed them.

“These partners are at the forefront of providing essential services to migrants and are in dire need of additional support,” said the letter, which was sent to FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell just before Christmas and released to The Colorado Sun this week.

Can family doctors deliver rural America from maternal health crisis?

Determining a baby’s size during a 28-week obstetrical visit is routine. But Magloire, a family physician trained in obstetrics in Georgia, knows that finding the mother’s uterus and, thus, checking the baby, can be tricky for inexperienced doctors.

“Sometimes it’s, like, off to the side,” Magloire said, showing a visiting medical student how to press down firmly and complete the hands-on exam. She moved her finger slightly to calculate the fetus’s height: “There she is, right here.”

Evans smiled and later said Magloire made her “comfortable.”

eastern Georgia, two states where both maternal and infant mortality are persistently high. She moved in with her mother and grandfather near Cairo, an agricultural community where the hospital has a busy labor and delivery unit. Magloire and other doctors at the local clinic where she works deliver hundreds of babies there each year.

Scenes like the one between Evans and Magloire regularly play out in this rural corner of Georgia despite grim realities mothers and babies face nationwide. Maternal deaths keep rising, with Black and Indigenous mothers most at risk; the number of babies who died before their 1st birthday climbed last year; and more than half of all rural counties in the United States have no hospital services for delivering babies, increasing travel time for parents-to-be and causing declines in prenatal care.

There are many reasons labor and delivery units close, including high operating costs, declining populations, low Medicaid reimbursement rates, and staffing shortages.

Family medicine physicians still provide the majority of labor and delivery care in rural America, but

few new doctors recruited to less populated areas offer obstetrics care, partly because they don’t want to be on call 24/7. Now, with rural America hemorrhaging health care providers, the federal government is investing dollars and attention to increase the ranks.

“Obviously the crisis is here,” said Hana Hinkle, executive director of the Rural Training Track Collaborative, which works with more than 70 rural residency training programs. Federal grants have boosted training programs in recent years, Hinkle said.

In July, the Department of Health and Human Services announced a nearly $11 million investment in new rural programs, including family medicine residencies that focus on obstetrical training.

Nationwide, a declining number of primary care doctors — internal and family medicine — has made it difficult for patients to book appointments and, in some cases, find a doctor at all. In rural America, training family medicine doctors in obstetrics can be more daunting because of low government reimbursement and increasing medical liability costs, said Hinkle, who is also assistant dean of Rural Health Professions at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford.

In the 1980s, about 43% of general family physicians who completed their residencies were trained in

obstetrics. In 2021, the American Academy of Family Physicians’ annual practice profile survey found that 15% of respondents had practiced obstetrics.

Yet family doctors, who also provide the full spectrum of primary care services, are “the backbone of rural deliveries,” said Julie Wood, a doctor and senior vice president of research, science, and health of the public at the AAFP. In a survey of 216 rural hospitals in 10 states, family practice doctors delivered babies in 67% of the hospitals, and at 27% of the hospitals they were the only ones who delivered babies. The data counted babies delivered from 2013 to 2017. And, the authors found, if those family physicians hadn’t been there, many patients would have driven an average of 86 miles round-trip for care.

Mark Deutchman, the report’s lead author, said he was “on call for 12 years” when he worked in a town of 2,000 residents in rural Washington. Clarifying that he was exaggerating, Deutchman explained that he was one of just two local doctors who performed cesarean sections.

He said the best way to ensure family physicians can bolster obstetric units is to make sure they work as part of a team to prevent burnout, rather than as solo do-it-all doctors of old.

“Buses bringing migrants into our state are now a daily occurrence, and we are seeing a growing trend of migrants initially arriving in Denver and then moving into other communities across Colorado.”

More than 80 migrants earlier this winter were sleeping outside in Carbondale, camped out in tents and inside vehicles parked under a bridge. Community leaders offered temporary shelter in a nonprofit meeting room and have since been searching for housing.

The Colorado leaders urged FEMA to increase funding to the Shelter and Services Program next fiscal year, beginning in July, and to extend eligibility in the program to more cities and nonprofit organizations. They also asked for funding

for technical assistance, particularly for rural areas that have never before had to set up migrant services.

“Your prompt attention to this matter is not just a response to a pressing need; it is essential to ensuring thousands of new arrivals facing harsh and unpredictable conditions have shelter and support throughout winter,” the letter states.

The Democrats said they have not yet received a response from FEMA. Mayor Johnston is also seeking more federal support, appearing the past few days on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He wants expanded and speedy work authorization permits so that Venezuelans can get jobs faster. Venezuelans are eligible for temporary protected status if they arrived before July 31, 2023, which is the federal government’s cutoff date.

capita of any city in America,” Johnston said in early January on “Meet the Press.” “And almost all of those folks who arrived now don’t have access to that temporary protected status so they don’t have a clear path to work authorization. That makes it harder and harder for us to help them. And every time I see folks they ask me the same thing, which is ‘How can I get a job?’”

The mayor also asked for more cooperation with other states, particularly Texas, as Denver reaches a “breaking point” and has filled up nearly every available hotel room.

The migrant response will cost the city $160 million to $180 million in next fiscal year’s budget, which is almost 15% of the total budget.

“We are the shortest and cheapest bus ticket north of El Paso,” he said.

The legislature’s Joint Budget Committee approved the emergency supplemental funding, which will create grants for community groups helping migrants. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has promised $9 million.

As the city cleans up the encampment in northwestern Denver, migrants traveling with children will have priority in housing assistance.

“Everything is more difficult with a child and we don’t want to see children on the streets,” said Ewing, with Denver Human Services. “You don’t want a family in a congregate shelter. The idea and the goal is to get everyone into a better situation.”

There wasn’t an open parking spot within blocks of the Gold Crown Foundation in Lakewood.

A sea of jerseys marked “27” formed a line of hundreds, inching their way inside the field house for Jamal Murray’s annual basketball camp.

The superstar shooting guard for the NBA reigning champions the Denver Nuggets hosted hoards of aspiring basketball players on Dec. 30 for a day of skill-building, pictures, games, awards and more. The participants ranged from kindergarteners to high schoolers.

“The kids are great,” Murray told Colorado Community Media between photos. “They want to learn.

They want to be in the NBA. A lot of them told me they’ll see me in the NBA in a couple of years. It’s fun for them to have that kind of motivation and to see someone who was in their position at camps and stuff (as a kid).

It’s cool to be making their dream come true. So I’m just here to inspire them and give them some words of encouragement.”

The camp, put on by FlexWork Sports Management, included more than two dozen volunteer coaches from around Colorado who helped run stations on several courts throughout the day.

While waiting to meet and take photos with Murray, attendees could practice a series of basketball drills, participate in contests and scrimmage against one another.

One of the volunteer coaches, Tony Rodriguez from Colorado Springs, said his daughter participated in the event. She’s a fourth-grader who plays basketball in Highlands Ranch.

“I think it’s just a great opportunity that he’s giving back to the community and giving a platform for these kids to come out and have fun,” Rodriguez said. “Just seeing somebody

play at the highest level, and for them to come interact with the kids, it’s a great thing.”

For Amy Maloney and her daugh-

ter, Malia, from Denver, this is the first year they’ve attended Murray’s camp.

“It’s really fun. It’s so cool,” Malia

Maloney said, starstruck after getting a picture and fistbump with Murray.

Murray played “Robin” to Nikola Jokic’s “Batman” during the Nugget’s 2022-23 championship run. Before last season, Denver had never hoisted the NBA’s Larry O’Brien trophy.

Murray averaged 26.1 points, 7.1 assists and 5.7 rebounds in 20 games during the 2023 playoffs, according to Statmuse.

On their quest to repeat, the Nuggets are currently battling the Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. But Murray said it’s nice to get away from the bright lights and spend time with fans and basketball dreamers like himself.

He remembers a time not-so-long ago when he was the camper hoping to take his game to the next level.

“It’s always fun,” he said. “I have a little brother as well. I just want to teach them and give them small tips that can help and certainly give them confidence. Whatever it is I can do to help their mindset to grow.”

There needs to be a core group of physicians, nurses, and a supportive hospital administration to share the workload “so that somebody isn’t on call 365 days a year,” said Deutchman, who is also associate dean for rural health at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus School of Medicine. The school’s College of Nursing received a $2 million federal grant this fall to train midwives to work in rural areas of Colorado.

Nationwide, teams of providers are ensuring rural obstetric units stay busy. In Lakin, Kansas, Drew Miller works with five other family physicians and a physician assistant who has done an obstetrical fellowship.

Together, they deliver about 340 babies a year, up from just over 100 annually when Miller first moved there in 2010. Word-of-mouth and two nearby obstetric unit closures have increased their deliveries. Miller said he has seen friends and partners “from surrounding communities stop delivering just from sheer burnout.”

In Galesburg, Illinois, Annevay Conlee has watched four nearby obstetric units close since 2012, forcing some pregnant people to drive up to an hour and a half for care. Conlee is a practicing family medicine doctor

and medical director overseeing four rural areas with a team of OB-GYNs, family physicians, and a nurse-midwife. “There’s no longer the ability to be on 24/7 call for your women to deliver,” Conlee said. “There needs to be a little more harmony when recruiting in to really support a team of physicians and midwives.”

In Cairo, Magloire said practicing obstetrics is “just essential care.” In fact, pregnancy care represents just a slice of her patient visits in this Georgia town of about 10,000 people. On a recent morning, Magloire’s patients included two pregnant people as well as a teen concerned about hip pain and an ecstatic 47-year-old who celebrated losing weight.

Cairo Medical Care, an independent clinic situated across the street from the 60-bed Archbold Grady hospital, is in a community best known for its peanut crops and as the birthplace of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. The historical downtown has brick-accented streets and the oldest movie theater in Georgia, and a corner of the library is dedicated to local history.

The clinic’s six doctors, who are a mix of family medicine practitioners, like Magloire, and obstetrician-gynecologists, pull in patients from the surrounding counties and together deliver nearly 300 babies at the hospital each year.

Deanna Buckins, a 36-year-old

mother of four boys, said she was relieved when she found “Dr. Z” because she “completely changed our lives.”

“She actually listens to me and accepts my decisions instead of pushing things upon me,” said Buckins, as she held her 3-week-old son, whom Magloire had delivered. Years earlier, Magloire helped diagnose one of Buckins’ older children with autism and built trust with the family.

“Say I go in with one kid; before we leave, we’ve talked about every single kid on how they’re doing and, you know, getting caught up with life,” Buckins said.

Magloire grew up in Tallahassee, Florida, and did her residency in rural Kansas. The smallness of Cairo, she said, allows her to see patients as they grow — chatting up the kids when the mothers or siblings come for appointments.

“She’s very friendly,” Evans said of Magloire. Evans, whose first child was delivered by an OB-GYN, said she was nervous about finding the right doctor. The kind of specialist her doctor was didn’t matter as much as being with “someone who cares,” she said.

As a primary care doctor, Magloire can care for Evans and her children for years to come.

In 2023, wolverines won federal protections, gray wolves were reintroduced in Colorado and the Bureau of Land Management announced a draft-management plan for critical Gunnison sage grouse habitat, all species protected under a statute passed

by Congress 50 years ago.

Vera Smith, senior federal lands policy analyst for Defenders of Wildlife, said while the primary goal is to avoid Endangered Species Act listings altogether, when scientists do see species in decline, the act is critical for ensuring they get the protections they need to survive and thrive in the future.

“The act is really good at incentivizing that,” Smith pointed out. “When species are getting closer to extinction, the act steps in and offers that critical protection and directs resources

where they need to go.”

Since the 1900s, the Gunnison sage grouse has lost 90% of its sagebrushsea habitat to human development.

Smith said the number of birds known for their iconic mating dance has dropped to just 4,000. The BLM manages 42% of the bird’s remaining habitat, and is accepting public comments on its proposal through Feb. 7.

After 20 years of work by conservationists, in November the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agreed to list wolverines as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Fur trapping and poisoning brought the animal to the brink of extinction, and just 300 remain in the lower 48.

Andrea Zaccardi, carnivore conservation program legal director at the Center for Biological Diversity, said climate change and human disturbance are the two main threats.
