Holiday markets bring communities together in Jefferson County

From the end of November until the end of December, the Jefferson County calendar is peppered with holiday market days. Saturdays are the peak days for one-day-only markets like the Fremont Elementary School Holiday Market in Arvada, the Ukrainian Holiday Market in Lakewood and the holiday/winter markets at The Hub Building at 40 West Arts in Lakewood.

The markets function to bring specific communities together while offering a commerce space for artisans, small businesses and startup business owners.

According to Marina Dubrov, president of the Ukrainians of Colorado and coordinator for the Ukrainian Holiday Market, the market is more than a holiday celebration.

“We’ve been always focused on preserving the heritage, Ukrainian heritage, culture language, also to bring awareness of what’s going on in Ukraine right now,” Dubrova said of the goals for the market. “And of

course, to help our Ukrainians in Ukraine. And that’s what we’re doing today.

“It’s our second year of Ukrainian Christmas Market here in Solterra,” Dubrova continued. “We are happy that they are hosting us, and we will love this place. And thank God we have a beautiful weather today.

“The last two years we fundraised for orphans and internal refugees in Ukraine, some medical tactical medical supplies to Ukrainian Front.”

The markets are also a space where families can work together to create something while teaching valuable skills to the youth.

“I was started with shiver stones,” 15-year-old Thea Lapsly said about the start of her business Gallery Theadorian. “I was known as the girl with the rocks.”

Some Thoughts About the Future of the MLS in Light of Commission Lawsuits

Sellers, buyers and real estate professionals are all contemplating the future of real estate following the blockbuster verdict (and pending litigation) against the National Association of Realtors and several highprofile real estate franchises, such as RE/MAX. The multi-billion-dollar verdict was in favor of home sellers who questioned why they should be required to compensate agents who represent the buyers of their properties. Shouldn’t buyers pay for their own representation?

The verdict seemed to ignore one crucial fact — that the buyers’ agents are not compensated by the seller but by the seller’s agent who agreed to share his commission with any MLS member who procured and represented the buyer.

It’s such a crucial aspect of selling real estate. What seller in his right mind would list his or her home with “little old me” if I couldn’t enlist the services of 25,000 other brokers by listing each home on a common database and offering to split my listing commission with them if they brought the buyer?

I’ve written about this before. It’s called “cooperation and compensation.”

Each member of the multiple listing service (MLS) agrees to cooperate with every other member, and includes in his MLS listing the amount of his commission that he’s willing to give another member who produces the buyer.

It’s a good deal for the buyer.

Why hire me as your agent if I don’t have the opportunity to get paid for the listing you fall in love with?

The litigants in the NAR lawsuit would like to see buyers sign an agreement to pay me a certain dollar amount if I get them to the closing table on a home they want to buy. Currently, brokers who bring a buyer can expect between 2 and 3 percent of the sale price as compensation. That comes from sharing a 4- to 6percent listing commission earned by the other agent for taking their home to market.

It’s much easier to choose the best listing agent based on the services he or she will perform in getting one’s home seen in the best possible light by the greatest number of potential buyers, than it is to choose the best buyer’s agent who is going to do little more than initiate an MLS alert for active listings

which match the buyer’s search criteria, then providing physical access to the listings which that buyer wants to see.

The graphic at the bottom of this page describes the multitude of services offered to sellers by Golden Real Estate.

Although we provide equally important services to buyers, they are more intangible, such as negotiating for the best price, helping win bidding wars on competitive listings, negotiating inspection resolution, etc. It’s easy to show how well we marketed and sold listings; we can’t show how well we served buyers.

The verdict won against NAR and the big brokerage companies may be a “blockbuster,” but it’s hard to envision much changing from how our Denver MLS does business, or how the Colorado Real Estate Commission might modify the seller and buyer listing agreements we’re required to use in our transactions.

Let’s start with the state-mandated listing agreement for sellers. For as long as I’ve been a Realtor, it has contained a fields for entering the amount of commission charged by the listing agent and the amount of that commission the agent will offer to brokers who bring the buyer. There’s no pre-filled percentage or dollar amount, and we’re instructed by licensing law and Realtor ethics that there is no standard or customary number to enter in each of those fields.

Meanwhile, the MLS has always allowed the listing agent to enter any per-

centage or dollar amount (even $1) as the amount of compensation he or she will offer to other MLS members. So no change is needed there. (Recently, however, the MLS has allowed us to enter $0 instead of $1 in that field.)

Meanwhile, on the state-mandated buyer agency agreement, there have always been (as far back as I remember in my two decades of service) fields for entering the amount that the buyer will pay his agent (if anything), and whether he will seek compensation from the seller’s agent, and, failing that, whether or not the buyer will make up the difference of a specific amount of compensation to his or her agent. So, no changes are needed to that form.

There may be some disruption in other markets, but not here. Even if sellers are told they don’t have to pay buyers’ agents for their work, I picture every seller wanting to pay their listing agent enough commission to allow the offer of compensation, because failing to do so runs the risk of getting fewer showings and offers.

Like any seasoned listing agent, I have my preferred title companies based on years of experience working with them. I have found the escrow officers of some firms more attentive and better at handling issues that may arise, so I definitely recommend one for my seller to use.

I admit that I should remind them it’s their decision and point them to Garry’s website, but a choice based on it would be based solely on price. Then we could talk.

Where I think agents go wrong is when they have an in-house title company and they get spiffed for “capturing” a seller for that title company and probably don’t suggest their client shop other companies.

Perhaps you, like me, have yearned to travel the world — the whole world. I remember seeing “Around the World in 80 Days” when it came out, and it made me want to go for it.

Thanks to Golden Real Estate’s excellent broker associates, and thanks to modern internet and cellular connectivity, Rita and I are taking the plunge, so-to-speak, and will embark next week on a 122-day world cruise on the Viking Sky (above).

We leave from Los Angeles on Jan. 6th and return from London on May 6th. I will not only continue to perform most of my real estate duties (except in-person tasks), including writing this column each week, I will

also publish a daily travelogue which you’re invited to receive by email. I’ll be receiving and responding to voicemail, only answering the phone when I’m ashore, where I can also return calls. I’ll continue to receive all the usual real estate information by email and have access to our MLS, so I will be sufficiently upto-date on the topics I like to write about in this space. What’s happening in Jeffco Lieutenant Governor Dianne Primavera’s visit to Lakewood, RTD changes and more

This week, the lieutenant governor of Colorado came to Lakewood to bring attention to great causes and the disabled community, while the Regional Transportation District issued reminders about fare changes Meanwhile, two politicians are cosponsoring a law to help people with eating disorders and other health issues. Primavera visits Lakewood to support people with disabilities and service animals

Colorado Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera recently visited Lakewood nonprofit Domino Service Dogs. The trip was to highlight services for disabled Coloradans. Primavera also used the space to promote the work of the Colorado Disability Funding Committee.

“With one in four Colorado adults living with a disability, we know just how important it is to make sure our disability community is well served,” Primavera said. “Thanks to the Colorado Disability Funding Committee and important organizations like Domino Service Dogs, we are able

to find innovative opportunities to expand support for people with disabilities here in Colorado.”

The committee also supports programs that help people apply for disability and medical services.

They are also the organization that auctions the rights to personalized official Colorado license plates. The money raised through the plates goes back into the support that the committee offers to people with disabilities all over the state.

RTD Reminder of January light rail and systemwide fare changes

It’s that time of year, or one of three times each year that RTD (Regional Transportation District) adjusts its schedules to accommodate changes. This announcement also came with a reminder of a fare decrease taking place in January as well.

The schedule adjustments are a response to changes in ridership, traffic, the economy and feedback from customers. The schedule changes will affect the following routes: • Local/limited bus routes: 6, 10, 15, 15L, 38, 51, 52, 65, 133, 204, 324, 327 • Regional bus routes: AT, BOLT, CV, EV, FF1, FF2, LD, NB, RX • Rail: D, E, H, L, R, W (E and H Lines return to 15-minute frequencies) • Access-s-Ride routes with reductions or improvements may impact paratransit service availability.

The new lower fares across the RTD system go into effect Jan. 7. The standard fee is currently $3.00 for a 3-hour pass and $5.50 for a day pass.

That is going down to $2.57 for a 3-hour pass and $6.00 for a day pass.

Sen. Cutter and Rep. Kennedy cosponsor law to help people with eating disorders and other health issues

The Colorado General Assembly recently announced a slate of new laws supporting measures on EpiPen affordability, informed consent for medical procedures and health care protections for people suffering from eating disorders. The laws go into effect Jan. 1.

Two area lawmakers, Rep. Chris deGruy Kennedy, D-Lakewood and Senator Lisa Cutter, D-Jefferson County co-sponsored the new law protecting people with eating disorders. According to Kennedy, the law SB23-176: Protections for People with Eating Disorders was created because one in three people with eating disorders receive improper treatment or none at all due to outdated body measurement standards.

“This law prohibits health insurance companies from denying eating disorder treatments based on outdated standards, like body mass index and ideal body weight,” Kennedy said. “We’re eliminating harmful approaches so we can ensure the health and safety of Coloradans.”

“We must address outdated and harmful approaches to treating eating disorders and provide care that is respectful to each individual and on par with the latest research,” Cutter said.

The other bills, HB23-1002 Epinephrine Auto-injectors and HB231077 Informed Consent to Intimate Patient Examinations, are found on the Colorado General Assembly website.

Giving Machines make donating an interactive experience

This holiday season, giving has become fun and more interactive with the Giving Machine located in Cherry Creek Mall. It’s a vending machine that vends goodwill and so much more according to Chris Jensen, Columbine Stake President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“It’s a fun, unique and individual way for people to give to those in need in the community.

And, it’s really tangible,” Jensen said.

The machine is one of 61 across the country.

They were rolled out in the 2017 Christmas season and Denver was one of the first cities to get a machine that year, according to Jensen. He explained that the machines are filled with items from six charities, two of which are from Colorado.

He described the process of giving like using a regular vending machine to get a snack.

“You stand in front of the machines. You see what’s available” Jensen explained. “There’s one for a goat. It shows a little picture of a cute goat.

And it says, ‘donate a goat for milk and breeding and create an impactful income opportunity.’

So, if you pick that goat for $98, and push the button,(it’s) similar to when you buy a bag of chips.”

He said the machine picks and pushes out the item with the goat photo.

However, there is one difference between the Giving machine and the one vending a snack.

“Now you don’t pick the goat picture out,” Jensen said. “The volunteers at the machines gather those, and then they restock them. But when you make, your choice, it is registered. That’s what you bought.”

chased by the person who swiped their card for payment. The volunteers are also there to ensure the donation goes where it needs to.

There are a wide range of items available. For example, The Colorado Hosting Asylum Network serves refugees and migrants to come to the Denver and Lakewood area.

“You can give them a healthy food basket,” Jensen said. “Or, you can give a bicycle to help migrants get around town because they come here and they don’t have anything. Or you can

give a towel set to a previously homeless woman who was trying to develop some self-reliance and independence on her own. There’s all these really cool things.”

He said the cheapest item is a $5 bus pass from the Salvation Army and the most expensive is a bike for $175 from the Colorado Hosting Asylum Network.

“There’s also a $10 meal to feed an emergency responder or to give a shelter guest one meal.

And that’s been our No. 1 seller this year” Jensen said. “I think there’s been about 1,000 of those so far.”

The Giving Machine has raised over $200,000 this year. According to Jensen, the majority of donations have come from individuals. However, he has seen groups and even companies bringing their employees to the machine.

He said 100% of the donations go to the charity listed on each item. “The church said it’s not our charity, it’s these charities (receiving the donation),” Jensen explained. “So, we will provide the machines at no transaction costs.”

Jensen also shared a special hack for the Giving Machine.

“There’s a secret code,” Jensen said. “If you type 777, you get to buy everything in the machine all at once. It’s like $1,860 or something.

And every single one of the items comes down.”

The machine will be available through Jan. 4.

Jensen urges Jeffco residents to come see it and to donate.

“We’re asking people to come and visit, bring your family and friends, open your hearts. And give generously,” Jensen said. “If you go and stand in front of that machine and make a conscious choice to give something to somebody, you will feel the warmth and light in your heart.”

Report measures value of college education

Is college worth it? It can be, but students need to have better information about what a college education can lead to.

According to a recent Colorado report, residents who complete college fare much better than their counterparts. In fact, those who finish a bachelor’s degree greatly outearn residents with only a high school diploma by several hundred dollars a week.

The annual 2023 Higher Education Return on Investment Report commissioned by lawmakers provides a highlevel look at how Colorado students fare if they get a college certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree.

This year’s report shows the debt held by college graduates has dropped and in-demand jobs are expected to grow, but there are still pay gaps for collegeeducated residents.

The data shows white and Asian American graduates earn more than Black and Hispanic graduates.

The information in the report is crucial to help students make a decision about whether they should go to college, advocates said. They also say the state can go a step further by displaying more information that students can use, including which college programs benefit them the most.

TeRay Esquibel, Ednium: The Alumni Collective executive director, said the report helps build a collective understanding of what students can expect if they go to college. In recent years, students, especially those who are from low-income backgrounds, have questioned more and more whether to go to college due to high tuition and debt.

Esquibel said even more data can not only help students decide if they want to go, but decide which college to enroll in. His organization provides Denver Public Schools graduates resources to prepare themselves for college and careers.

He said he hears from students who want to understand whether they’re going to be able to take care of their family or give back to their community by going to college. They don’t want to be stuck with high debt and no support once they graduate.

“Students should be able to ask the question, ‘if I make this investment, what do I get out of it?’” Esquibel said.

“I don’t know anybody that would make an investment of four years of time and potentially tens of thousands of dollars without being able to ask the question, ‘What can I expect?’”

Below are three takeaways from this year’s report.

Graduates are leaving with less debt This year’s report reaffirms that higher education continues to be important.

About 91% of Colorado jobs with the potential to provide an income that can support a family of three require some education beyond high school — either a college certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree.

Student debt, however, can cut into the ability of students to make enough money to support themselves.

The good news is that the total amount of debt among Colorado public college and university graduates has declined in recent years. Colorado students who earn a bachelor’s carried a debt load on average of $25,200 in 2022, down $1,300 from 2016. And community college graduates leave with about $12,900 in debt, down by $900 during the same time period.

Van Schoales, the Keystone Policy Center’s senior policy director, said the data surprised him, but shows there’s a greater return on going to college now. The nonprofit works with policy leaders on contentious topics to reach common ground.

“I think that’s a really bright light for Colorado,” he said.

Job growth in Colorado continues to look promising Across Colorado, job growth among the top in-demand jobs will continue to grow by 1.3% over the next five years.

The healthcare and social assistance job sector — which includes nurses and youth and family social workers — is expected to see the greatest increases, growing by over 35,000 jobs.

But Colorado has struggled to fill many jobs, with two available jobs for every unemployed person.

Katie Zaback, Colorado Succeeds vice president of policy, said she hopes the data is shared widely throughout the state and in a way that’s helpful for students. Colorado Succeeds is a coalition of business leaders interested in improving education and training for students.

“We need to do more to help students understand what those pro-

grams are, what kind of jobs they lead to, and what the demand for different jobs are so that they can make smart choices about what they want to pursue,” she said.

There are still big gaps in who benefits the most Colorado Black and Hispanic residents who graduate with a bachelor’s degree make less than their peers, the report shows.

The report says those wage gaps have marginally decreased in the last decade. But the state must also do more to bolster inclusion in the state’s workforce, according to the report.

Esquibel said equitable access to information about college should be a foundational key to getting more students from low-income backgrounds interested in what college has to offer.

He hopes the report isn’t just read by policymakers, he said, but displayed in a way that’s accessible to teachers, students, and families.

“We’re seeing a huge swath of students that are coming from low-income backgrounds dismiss college out of hand because nobody can give them a tangible sense of what their return on investment is going to be,” he said.

In Jefferson County, 2023 was a year of big natural events in Colorado and abroad. The year also saw major local changes like the reopening of Casa Bonita.

This year, readers of the Jeffco Transcript found out how climate change affects everyone and how helping a neighbor can extend across an ocean. The natural events that took place in 2023 became fertile ground for lessons in community spirit and caring for those around us.

Similarly, this year’s milestones and celebrations have also come with lessons for the community.

Lessons of triumph over adversity and resilience could be seen in stories about the first generation, multilingual graduates and even the reopening of an iconic Lakewood establishment once thought to be abandoned.

Here are a few of these stories from 2023 in photos.

The press preview of Casa Bonita offered a peak at the menus, the decor, the food and the cliff-diving entertainment. The preview revealed only some of the wonders that await diners eager to get a table.

The Alameda International High School graduation was a joyful day for many Lakewood families. For some of those families, the graduating senior wasn’t the only person celebrating a milestone. Students like the brothers pictured were the first to graduate high school and will be the first to go to college.

They were also multilingual graduates and the sons of immigrants. The latter made the brothers the first in the family to graduate from an American high school. This moment laid so many foundations for the brothers and the rest of the family.

When a light shined on community heroes

The Jefferson County sports world has seen so many ups and downs in 2023. Behind the news, however, are two hometown heroes who manage the space where the events take place. Their work goes far beyond opening or closing the stadium doors before and after the games.

For Jeffco, these two women are the maintainers and champions of the fields at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada. It’s a space that schools and leagues throughout the county rely on. That makes the job of managing the place a special one.

When Halloween was for everyone

Halloween is a holiday that’s usually reserved for kids, but Belmar Shopping District and Foothills Animal Shelter came together to make a Halloween event that was just for the canine community. BARKtober Fest had the square at Belmar overrun with dogs in costume, and those without costumes but still ready to celebrate the holi-

day.

Pictured is a family caught taking a break from the festivities. They were just a few participants in an event that drew the Colorado Avalanche mascot Bernie, local food trucks, local canine-focused food makers and even a pup-friendly hayride. When helping a neighbor meant crossing an ocean

Outside the state borders and the continent, forest fires leveled whole communities on the island of Maui. Hundreds of families were displaced, and many lives were lost. Jefferson County Animal Control got a dispatch from the Maui Humane Society about the scores of animals that were in dire need of help. The local government was overwhelmed with the needs of fire survivors and was desperate for aid.

Read about how the Jeffco Sheriff ’s Office sent in its animal control squad to help along. They joined law enforcement and animal rescue teams from all over the country and deployed people to Maui to help.

Danielle Lime sold jams and other goods that she made.

The Ukrainian Market hosted families of entrepreneurs as well. Nika Logachova was selling jewelry and paintings that she created alongside ornaments created by her godmother Yana Ignatovich. Nika’s mom Irena Logachova had intricate beadwork at the table and a variety of handmade Ukrainian pastries for sale.

The markets are a space to find one-of-a-kind gifts while also supporting local artisans and businesses. The Lakewood Arts Council Gallery’s Holiday Market featured several artists with everything from prints to vases,

three generations of entrepreneurs and artisans who work and sell together.

“We’ve been doing shows together for years,” Garrett said. “We even share an iPad.” She explained that the work they do is expensive, so markets like the one at Fremont Elementary offer booth space at a low price.

“Everything here costs us money to make. I make everything fresh here,” she said gesturing to the baked treats on the Grandma’s Kitchen table.

Across the hall, the gallery is Red Herring Art Supply, where Kris Autobee offered an impromptu tutorial on intricate snowflake making.

Down the hall, Next Gallery’s Winter Market Showcased canvas-based, 2-D and 3-D creations made with wax.

Other galleries at The Hub offered some great unique art pieces as well.

Two of these, the Ukrainian market and the Fremont school market, were one-day-only markets that took place on Dec. 16. The markets at The Hub are still going through the end of December.

Jefferson County considers closing Lookout Mountain Road at night Locals concerned about emergency access, pushing illegal activity to neighborhoods

Anyone who’s visited Lookout Mountain Road or the nearby trails knows how busy the area can be, especially on weekends and/or in the summer.

According to Jefferson County Open Space, Lookout Mountain Road is even busier at midnight than it is at 10 a.m. on the weekends.

Although the trails and parking areas close an hour after sunset, JCOS confirmed cell phone data, law enforcement contacts, litter, graffiti and other things indicate there’s a large amount of illegal activity in the area at night.

To curb this, the agency and its partners have proposed installing two gates to close the road at night. The gates would close a 4-mile stretch of road that crosses Jeffco and Denver parklands. No residences would be impacted.

Several Jeffco Open Space parks, such as White Ranch, have similar gates at trailhead parking lots to prevent people from visiting after park hours.

While dozens of Lookout Mountain residents were generally in favor of closing the road overnight, they also were concerned about emergency access, especially during evacuations and snowstorms.

Many said at a Dec. 13 stakeholder meeting that Lookout Mountain is their only route home when snow closes both Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 40. They asked officials to either ensure the road would be open and plowed when both I-70 and U.S. 40 close or to give residents an access code to open the gates.

They were also concerned that closing Lookout Mountain Road would push illegal activity, such as drinking and shooting guns, into the neighborhoods and parking lots outside either gate. Officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office and Golden Police Department said they’d increase patrols in those areas, but asked for residents’ help by reporting any suspicious activity.

Mary Ann Bonnell, JCOS visitor services & natural resources director, said preventing overnight activity will help protect the parks’ natural and cultural resources, and make the Lookout Mountain area much safer.

She said JCOS and its partners are in the stakeholder-engagement process, talking to residents and other groups that’d be impacted by such a closure. After that, she said the agency would need to have a conceptual design for the gates to take back to stakeholders, but she hoped the agency and its

Making the mountain safer

According to Bonnell, if the gates are installed, pedestrians and cyclists would still be able to access the road overnight. However, they’d have to stay on the road.

Bonnell said, in general, motorists using Lookout Mountain Road isn’t the issue. It’s people who pull off the road and park, despite Windy Saddle Park and the surrounding areas being closed.

Bonnell said JCOS and its partners have installed signs that people disregard, and barricades that people relocate.

Lt. Dan Aten of the Jeffco Sheriff ’s Office described how frequently deputies patrol the area overnight, writing tickets and clearing people out of the parking lots. But, the problem is that more

people come in behind the deputies, so the problems just continue, he said.

Installing gates would prevent that and have an overall “positive impact,” Aten continued, adding, “The call loads and activity up here have just increased (in recent years).”

Regarding gate access, Bonnell said the gates would have a sensor and open if there was a vehicle inside, just in case someone didn’t finish their hike before the gates closed. The gates would also be able to recognize emergency vehicles, and first responders would be able to keep the gates open during emergency evacuations.

Residents described dangerous activity on the mountain overnight, including gunfire, with one resident holding up bullets he’s found in his yard.

He said overnight road closures would make his neighborhood and the entire Golden area safer.

Bonnell acknowledged that illegal gunfire was a major problem, saying that even during the day, deputies and JCOS rangers get calls about people carrying firearms on Lookout Mountain.

When asked whether they supported the overnight road closure proposal, almost all the attendees raised their hands. Only a few did not. Bonnell said JCOS and its partners would continue gathering public input, and invited people’s feedback on the proposed closure.

Respiratory illnesses rising across the state, local doctors caution Flu and COVID-19 cases also increasing, but hospitalizations remain lower than this time last year, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment

Respiratory-related illnesses typically associated with the winter months are rising. Statewide flu, COVID-19 and Respiratory syncytial virus cases began climbing in the early weeks of October but took a sharper spike toward the end of November.

“The number of RSV cases has risen sharply over the past two weeks,” said Dr. Sam Dominguez, MD, infectious disease specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

RSV is a condition that mimics the

common cold with symptoms like congestion, coughing, headaches, fever, runny nose and sore throat.

For premature infants and young children with chronic lung or heart conditions, RSV can be dangerous, even life-threatening.

Dominguez isn’t sure what’s behind the acceleration in cases but said he believes Thanksgiving travel may have contributed. According to Children’s Hospital, RSV spreads primarily through close contact with infected people or contaminated surfaces.

The most recent RSV data shows

there were 541 positive cases (including adults and children) the week of Dec. 3, up from 349 just two weeks prior. Since October 1, there have been 51 recorded RSV outbreaks in school and childcare settings with no RSV-associated pediatric deaths, according to the CDPHE. “We do not know when we will peak or how high the peak will be,” Dominguez said. “We think the numbers will likely continue to go up and/or be high for the next several weeks. While these numbers are as high as they were at the peak of 2021, they’re still significantly lower than they were at the peak of 2022.”

He also pointed out that Children’s Hospital is seeing an increase in influenza A and B, although currently at lower levels than RSV. SEE ILLNESSES, P39

VOICES Mind-blowing: Bubble-wrapped brains

Whether devouring a mate, squirting acid from the abdomen or shooting blood from the eye, each speINSIDE THE cies fits perfectly in its own niche, even OUTDOORS though that niche is not always understood by humans.

For example, the expectation that two 300-pound animals, each carrying 30 pounds of horn on his head, should Christie Greene run into each at 40 mph is staggering.

Bighorn sheep have intrigued scientists who wish to learn how the animals’ head-bashing behaviors do not result in concussions.

In an interview with the New York Times, Dr. Gregory D. Myer, director of research in sports medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, shared a head-scratching description of the mechanism by which bighorn sheep rams avoid concussions. He stated that “bighorns’ brains are naturally protected with mechanisms that slow the return of blood from the head to the body, increasing blood volume that fills their brains’ vascular tree, creating the Bubble Wrap effect.”

Myer continued his mind-boggling explanation: “The sheep has hollow pneumatic horn cores attached to its respiratory system that allow it to

re-breathe its air and thus increase carbon dioxide in its bloodstream, expanding its intracranial vascular tree and enhancing the Bubble Wrap effect.”

No quiz will be given at the conclusion of this article.

Yet, there has been recent research suggesting that the sheeps’ headramming might be more impactful to their brain health than earlier believed. In 2022, the Icahn School of

Medicine at Mount Sinai published a study in Acta Neuropathologica revealing that signs of concussions and head trauma were present in the brains of deceased bighorn sheep and muskoxen.

If brain damage isn’t enough of a challenge, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (RMBHS, for those in the know) face serious threats from infringement of the more aggressive mountain goat and the tragic effects

of a strain of pneumonia contracted from domestic goats and sheep which is fatal to RMBHS lambs. Colorado Parks and Wildlife states that the separation of domestic sheep and goats from RMBHS is critical to the survival of the state’s wild sheep.

In Idaho, a sheep rancher’s grazing permit was retired in order to prevent infection of a neighboring RMBHS herd after the wild herd suffered 100% lamb mortality for several consecutive years. Domestic sheep are carriers of the disease but remain asymptomatic.

Fortunately, the largest bighorn sheep herd in Colorado is receiving support from federal and state government agencies. The Colorado Department of Transportation will be constructing a wildlife overpass near the town of Empire, protecting the sheep and other wildlife from collisions with vehicles. The project is to be completed by 2025.

Additionally, Rocky Mountain National Park protects its bighorn sheep population from the threat of encroachment by mountain goats by killing goats that enter the park.

Humans can support bighorn sheep populations by keeping domestic sheep and goats contained, driving carefully in bighorn sheep habitats, refraining from feeding sheep and by giving them space.

As the majestic Colorado State animal since 1961, the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep deserves protection and respect.

Putting It into perspective

W

e’re a curious species, we Homo sapiens. Among the billion-plus species that have gone extinct and those with whom we now share Earth, some precariously close to extinction, we’re the only ones, as far as I can determine, that believe we’re exempt from the laws of nature. But the truth is we’re like every other animal when it comes to survival and continuation of the species. And extinction is part of that natural phenomena.

Perhaps the dinosaurs thought they were exempt from natural law. After all, they ruled the planet for over 175 million years. They even had a fierce king: the Tyrannosaurus Rex. But he along with nearly all his minions got fricasseed in a firestorm, choked

to death on noxious gasses, or got swept away by tsunamis in Earth’s Fifth Mass Extinction when a comet the size of Mt. Everest gut-punched Mother Earth. Such are the vagaries of the universe.

If one steps back from the bedlam engulfing us and takes a grand view of the totality of Earth’s history, they should be in awe, even humbled.

And disconcerted. Because of the hundreds of millions of species that have roamed the land, swam in the seas, and flew in the sky, we’re the

only ones with the knowledge, capability, and most scarily, willingness to destroy not only ourselves but also the environment that sustains us.

To help put American history into perspective as well as their place and role in it, I had my eighth-grade students draw a series of lines across an eighteen-inch sheet of tagboard and plot dates from the birth of Earth to present day on them.

Each subsequent line was a closeup of a portion of the timeframe from the line above. As you might imagine, it was quite an exercise, an eyeopener especially that even within the few thousand years of documented human history, America’s history took up little space, and their few years a fraction of it.

I recalled that activity when watching the Netflix series, “Life on Our Planet.” In the series, a timeline is used to help move viewers through the epochs chronologically and put the epochs into perspective. It caused me to wonder how long a roll of paper I’d need if I created a timeline from the birth of the Earth 4,000,000,000 years ago to now if one foot equaled a century. The answer: 7,575 miles, which is nearly the diameter of Earth.

Next I wondered how much space on the 7,575-mile—forty-millionfoot—length I’d have to plot the significant dates and stretches of my life. Given that I’ve lived for about three quarters of a century, I calculated I’d have nine inches. Finally, I wondered what percentage of the timeline I’d occupy. The answer: 0.00000001875 percent.

Of course, a 7,575 roll of paper is neither realistic nor workable, so I pictured a more manageable one of 400 feet, where one foot equaled 40,000,000 years. I imagined plotting these significant dates, from a human point of view, onto it: (Note: Some scholars posit different dates and timeframes for the various epochs.)

First oceanic life forms: 2,000,000,000 years Plant Life on Land: 450,000,000 years Rise of the Dinosaurs: 245,000,000 years Death of the Dinosaurs: 66,000,000 years Earliest humans – Homo ha-

bilis: 2,000,000 years Rise of Homo sapiens: 100,000 years First Agricultural Revolution: 12,000 years Founding of the American Republic: 250 years My Life Span As you might have calculated, the entirety of humanoid history would take up an infinitesimally small space on that 400-foot timeline.

And my life, your life?

Could we go the way of the dinosaurs? It would be folly to think otherwise. Perhaps the comet that did them in was the first of a onetwo punch. Although not expected anytime soon, maybe the Yellowstone Cauldron will blow its gasket.

And then there is environmental degradation and AI: Artificial Intelligence. There is conjecture it could lead to our own extinction. I cannot authoritatively speak to that, but I can about the capabilities of human folly. I just look at and read the news.

Looking at it from that grand macro perspective, I’ve concluded that I’m merely a microscopic dot when calculating my time and space relative to the whole. Understanding that, I asked myself what I will do with this precious gift — conscious life — that I have remaining, especially with 2024 approaching with its dire prospects.

It sure as heck won’t be engaging in base human actions like judging, killing or denigrating others in the name of some creed, ideology, or other complex. Rather it will be spent celebrating life by doing uplifting stuff like writing, hanging with friends, and reflecting on what my — and our — place is in the grand scheme and whether by our choices and machinations we will bring about the Sixth Mass Extinction.

Handlers in Idaho Springs, Brighton and beyond help the animals spread holiday joy

sense of magic in the air sparks joy when people young and old see reindeer.

But for the owners of the reindeer, it’s a balance between creating a magical experience for people and making sure the reindeer are comfortable.

Kayla McIntosh, who owns Riverdale Reindeer of Colorado with her husband David McIntosh, said it’s easy these days for people to get caught up in school and work, which doesn’t always feel magical.

“But the ability to see an animal

that most people believe doesn’t actually exist,” Kayla McIntosh said. “And to see the kids light up and the parents really enjoy it and even learn things, it really is just a beautiful opportunity.”

Reindeer have been domesticated for thousands of years and have been used for various purposes. They also tend to make the holidays a little brighter by participating in holiday events across the metro area.

However, it takes a lot of work to prepare reindeer for events to ensure it’s a safe environment for the public and so the reindeer remain happy and healthy.

For each reindeer owner, training may look different, but it all starts with learning about the fascinating animal.

What makes reindeer a unique animal

Santa Bill (as he preferred to be called) at Laughing Valley Ranch in Idaho Springs has learned a lot about reindeer over his many years of working with them.

Just as other entities train their reindeer differently, reindeer are not all alike, he said. They each have a unique personality and different characteristics than other animals in the deer species.

“We want to educate everybody about reindeer and what magical animals they really are,” Santa Bill said.

When adults and children interact with the reindeer, Santa Bill includes an educational piece, which he calls a domestic livestock educational experience, that details reindeer adaptations for survival.

Reindeer can adapt to the changing seasons. They can change their coats and hooves and have amazing eyesight — they are the only animals that can see ultraviolet light, according to Santa Bill.

For events, the reindeer are set up in an enclosure which is decorated with garland, bows and lanterns around the holiday season.

It is important to the family to include an educational aspect where they can talk to the kids and other guests about what it is like to be in agriculture and to raise animals. The family loves to interact with the kids as well and typically provides treats, stickers and coloring sheets.

Although the reindeer don’t do long events, when they get tired, they will just lay down.

“We don’t force them to do anything they don’t want to do,” Kayla said. “They’re resting and relaxed and we want to encourage them to just enjoy their surroundings. They should feel like they are at home.”

What helps reindeer stand out are their antlers, Santa Bill added. Reindeer are the only members of the deer family that both male and female grow a new set of antlers every year. They use their antlers to strip away snow and vegetation, to find food and to defend themselves.

Male reindeer, also known as a bull, can have antlers that grow up to four feet tall, and they can weigh 25 to 30 pounds each, Santa Bill said.

Owners have to be extra careful with reindeer during their rut season, because they’re scraping velvet off their antlers — which is part of the natural growth process and acts as protection, Santa Bill continued.

At the ranch, most of the reindeer training happens after the rut and mating season where they are walked around their pens, outside and practice going in and out of the trailer.

When training, even reindeer who have done events in the past need a little refresher to get back into the routine and certain training aids may not always work.

“Sometimes we have to try different things,” Santa Bill said. “Nothing is an exact science when it comes to training animals.”

These reindeer also learn how to pull Santa’s sleigh by using reigns to signal the reindeer to start moving and the assistance of reindeer wranglers using lead ropes to guide the reindeer.

Another unique characteristic of reindeer is, unlike horses and cattle, reindeer can only kick forward and have a slight retraction. This helps them gain traction and start to catch air, Santa Bill said.

When people tell Santa Bill they thought the reindeer would be bigger, he says if they were any bigger, they’d be too heavy to get off the ground.

“It’s a magical thing,” Santa Bill said.

deer to events simply because of their love of reindeer and the hope to share that joy and passion with others.

David McIntosh is a fifth-generation dairy farmer whose family has been caring for and raising animals in Colorado since the early 1900s. He has also always been interested in reindeer.

Together, David and Kayla McIntosh spent years studying the history and biology of reindeer, have talked with other reindeer owners and breeders and have visited a number of farms.

Kayla McIntosh said it may sound corny, but just being in the presence of the reindeer and seeing their majesty is truly wonderful.

The McIntosh family has been raising reindeer for about three years.

They have Lacuna, Chilli, Noelle, Cranberry, Juniper, Kristoff and Hickory, the first bull to be born on the Riverdale Reindeer farm.

When preparing reindeer for events, Kayla McIntosh said the most basic point in training is spending time with the reindeer.

“It’s not like dedicated training hours, so much as it is just spending a lot of time with them,” Kayla McIntosh said. “It’s a pretty consistent thing to get them to be comfortable with us.”

At their farm, they are very particular about giving the reindeer their autonomy and don’t expect the reindeer to be okay with people petting them.

Cranberry is one of the reindeer

that regularly goes to events but isn’t keen on being touched and the McIntosh family doesn’t force it.

However, working with Hickory over the past year, he has become more comfortable around kids.

In addition to shows and holiday events, Hickory has also gone to schools where he got used to standing still for photos.

“A lot of the training was just on the spot,” Kayla McIntosh said. “Watching his cues, seeing if he felt comfortable in the situation and walking him out of the situation if he felt uncomfortable and giving him time to resettle.”

To ensure the reindeer always feel comfortable and safe, the family’s goal is that the reindeer enjoy going to events just as much as people enjoy coming to see them.

The family takes their reindeer’s personalities into account when they decide who goes to an event. Kayla McIntosh said even on the day of an event, they look to see who is feeling comfortable and who is feeling agitated.

If they can’t put a certain two reindeer together, they won’t do it.

The McIntoshes also want to make sure they keep the people coming to watch the show safe in the instance a reindeer gets nervous or agitated — one swing of the head could cause someone to get poked or hit with an antler.

“We do our best to make sure that isn’t even an option,” Kayla McIntosh said. “So we encourage lots of photos and things but we don’t specifically

Keeping reindeer happy and healthy

Holly and Eve are two reindeer who are not afraid to lay down and get comfortable.

At 7 Oaks Reindeer Farm in Franktown, Lisa Vaughn said she would never let her reindeer get to the point of feeling overworked.

“When they’re tired, they just fall asleep,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn has had Holly and Eve for about two and half years and said they are like big dogs as they like to greet her when she comes, love treats and even get the zoomies.

Vaughn works with trainer Karena Mee to get the reindeer used to people.

In addition to gently touching the reindeer, they would hold a happy hour once a week so the reindeer could get used to a crowd and music.

Holly and Eve have been busy throughout the holiday season. They took part in the tree lighting in Elizabeth, were at the Parker Hometown Holiday Parade and spent time at Lone Creek Farms.

The holiday season is also a lot of effort for the reindeer owners and handlers as well. They have to load the trailer, make sure there is enough food and supplies to last throughout the event and once they get to the event, they set up the pen to ensure it’s comfortable for the reindeer.

Hard work and early mornings aside, it’s all worth it when they have the opportunity to educate others on reindeer and see the excitement on the children’s faces. And it’s not just kids who get excited to see the reindeer.

“The adults are just as flabbergasted as the kids,” Mee said.

Wings Over the Rockies updates Wright Brothers exhibit

Most people are at least familiar with the Wright Brothers name, even if they don’t know much about the aviation pioneers. The Wings Over the Rockies museum, 7711 East Academy Blvd. in Denver, aims to do something about that by celebrating the 120th anniversary of Wilbur and Orville Wright’s first powered flight with an enhanced Wright Brothers exhibit.

The exhibit includes a roomier and more informative Wright Flyer simulator. According to provided information, to make the experience even more realistic, the simulator will feature a new projector and a larger, brighter screen and more graphics to make the viewer feel like they are actually there. The exhibit will also feature an original Wright Model K Propeller signed by Orville Wright at his home in Dayton in 1944 and provide information on “the third Wright brother,” their sister Katharine.

State mulls foster child tracking system Colorado could copy Texas program that tracks runaway foster kids

The girl who ran away from foster care took off without her diabetes medication, adding an extra layer of concern for the investigators responsible for tracking her down.

The teenager in a Texas foster placement went from Austin to Houston to Dallas and across the state line to Oklahoma as investigators worried about potential medical complications and whether she would get lost in a sex-trafficking ring. Still, thanks to pinging cell phone signals and a team of investigators responsible for finding foster kids who run, the girl was found within two days.

“She was sent to the hospital immediately because her sugar levels were significantly high and she would have died,” said Damaris Nicholson, part of the special investigations unit at the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. “We all know what happens when a youth in our care dies: the scrutiny, and the challenges and the ‘what could we have

done.’”

Finding the girl is one of the success stories of a 300-investigator unit in Texas responsible for finding children and teens who run away from foster homes, residential treatment centers and child welfare caseworkers trying to visit their homes.

Colorado has no such unit.

But an Office of the Child Protection Ombudsman task force charged with finding out why so many kids are running away from out-of-home placements is looking at Texas for a possible solution. Texas’ child welfare division created its program in 2005 and it’s grown to include 300 investigators, many of them former law enforcement officers, responsible for finding kids across 254 counties.

The Colorado task force was created by the state legislature after a joint investigation by The Colorado Sun and 9News in 2021 into the number of runaways from youth residential treatment centers. The investigation, which involved the news agencies suing the state over the failure to release abuse and neglect information, found that two boys, 12-year-old Timothy Montoya and 15-year-old Andrew Potter, died after leaving Denver-area centers and getting hit by cars.

The group will make final recommendations to the state legislature in October 2024.

The Texas absconder unit includes investigators who used to work as state troopers, homicide detectives, undercover narcotics officers and detectives who specialized in crimes against children, said Greg Eakens, the Texas department’s director of special investigations, as he answered questions from Colorado’s task force.

“You need to look for these kids like they’re your kids,” said Eakens, who was a police officer for 24 years before joining the child welfare division a decade ago. Or, “look for them like you’re looking for somebody that owes you money.”

“The children that run, they’re either running to something or from

December 28, 2023De something, and I like to think that they’re running away from a good environment to something that’s not so great, so we need to find them and we need to get them back into care.”

Not all of the former law officers know how to connect with kids, but the ones who can are better at their jobs, he said. Willingness to work at night and on weekends is also a plus.

“Who is willing to answer their phone after 5? That’s a big deal. Some of the kiddos that I’m actually most fond of gave me a lot of headaches — 11 p.m. phone calls. ‘Greg, I told you I was going to check in and I didn’t want you to be mad at me. I’m OK. I’m safe. I’ll call you in the morning.’”

When children are found, investigators attempt to conduct “recovery interviews,” trying to find out why they ran and whether any investigation into a foster home or a residential center is needed. “If they identify something that’s happened at the treatment center or foster home, that’s a great opportunity for us to

pursue that,” he said, adding that his unit would involve law enforcement or child welfare caseworkers, depending on the allegations.

“We can’t make the children talk to us, so if we go in there and they’re still coming down if they’re on substances or just anxiety or whatever, and they tell us where to go, we do.

Texas data shows that 131 were victimized in some way while they were missing from care, including 56 who were sex trafficked.

Colorado has about 3,500 children living in foster families, residential treatment centers and other placements. Instead of an absconder unit, the state has in the past hired private investigators to track down young people who’ve gone missing from the juvenile corrections system.
