Bennet and Perlmutter join mayors on crumbling bridge tour Federal Infrastructure money to fix distressed overpasses coming soon BY BOB WOOLEY BWOOLEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, U.S. Representative Ed Perlmutter, Wheat Ridge Mayor Bud Starker and Arvada Mayor Marc Williams joined Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Executive Director Shoshana Lew in Wheat Ridge Jan. 24 to tour the I-70 Ward Road bridges and 44th Avenue bridges. A statement from Perlmutter’s office said the bridges, constructed over 50 years ago, were in need of repair after decades of wear and tear. SEE TOUR, P3

A group including Sen. Michael Bennet, Rep. Ed Perlmutter, the Mayors of Arvada and Wheat Ridge and CDOT officials, discuss infrastructure projects that will soon be underway. Several bridges along I-70 including the Ward Road overpass will receive federal funds for repair.

Denver Judge Martin Egelhoff denied a request Jan 25 to move the cases against 17-year-olds Kevin Bui and Gavin Seymour to juvenile court. The two are accused of starting a deadly house fire in the 5300 block of North Truckee Street in Denver’s Green Valley Ranch area on Aug. 5, 2020. Egelhoff’s decision came after a three-day hearing earlier this month to determine if adult cases against the suspects should proceed. In his ruling, Egelhoff wrote that both teens could be rehabilitated in juvenile detention. However, he declined to send the cases to juvenile court. “In a case such as this, where the result of the defendant’s conduct is the loss of not one but five human lives; the total destruction of the home of two families; and the devastation of multiple families and communities, both locally and abroad, the community has a legitimate and significant interest in the most severe and consequential punishment commensurate with the immeasurable harm occasioned by the defendants’ conduct,” Egelhoff wrote. “Indeed, in nearly 23 years as a judicial officer, this Court has not witnessed a case of such gravity, consequence and loss as that presented herein.” SEE ARSON, P4
