After testing the waters last year, it seems Wild West Oktoberfest is here to stay.
YoColorado and other Golden businesses revived the community’s Oktoberfest last year — with a Western spin — and proceeds bene ted the Golden Civic Foundation. e original Oktoberfest was founded in 1978 as a GCF fundraiser and ran annually until 1993.
After last year’s pilot event, GCF took over as organizer and moved the celebrations from downtown to the Clear Creek parking lot o 10th Street.
e Golden Civic Foundation has wanted to move away from its gala-style fundraiser, which has run for 47 years, and instead host a larger community event as its chief fundraiser. Starting this year, that’ll be Wild West Oktoberfest, GCF Director of Community Impact Julie Bartos said.
e nonpro t sold out its Sept. 23 Bavarian Banquet, with more than 500 community members enjoying a night of cowboy-themed music, polka-style dancing, steinholding competitions and more.
e Sept. 24 celebrations were similar but open to the public with discounts for local groups like Colorado School of Mines students and Coors employees.
Bartos felt like this format worked well, with the VIP event Friday night and the public, family-friendly one Saturday afternoon and evening.
anks to last year’s proceeds, the foundation was able to support 37 local nonpro ts, Bartos said. is year’s fundraising goal was $250,000
to support projects like Foothills Art Center’s forthcoming Astor House campus.
Bartos thanked Coors, Wild West Oktoberfest’s title sponsor, and all the other businesses and community members who donated their time, products or other resources to make it happen. She hoped the event would become an annual celebration of Golden’s German, Western and beer cultures.
PJ Coors also thought Wild West Oktoberfest was a great way to bring the Golden community together in the fall. He said the Coors brewery put together a special Oktoberfeststyle beer exclusively for the event, and liked how this year’s location allowed more room for all the vendors and activities.
He said Coors wanted to support GCF’s e orts and commended the nonpro t for all its work, saying, “ ey know where the need is (in the community).”
In the Clear Creek parking lot, there was a strong mix of Bavaria and the American West on display. Some attendees wore dirndl dresses and lederhosen; others donned cowboy hats and boots; and several had apparel that was a mix of both styles, which they showed o in the men’s, women’s, and couples/families costume contests.
Attendees also tested their
A recent article in The Washington Post detailed how Allstate, State Farm and other major providers of homeowners insurance in California have “pulled back coverage in the last year due to wildfires and the rising costs of such risks. They have claimed that homeowners’ premiums do not match the risk they face.”
Laws and regulations in California have prevented insurers from raising rates as much as they need to, leaving as their only option refusing to renew or issue policies. In Florida, which is friendlier to insurers, homeowners pay $6,000 per year for insurance on average, according to the Post article, whereas the average in California is only $1,300 per year.
We are already seeing a similar pullback in communities that have experienced wildfires or are simply at risk of wildfire. Let me know whether the company that insures your home has refused to renew your policy at any price.
The Dec. 30, 2021, Marshall fire in Superior and Louisville was not just a wakeup call for homeowners. It also caught the attention (to put it mildly) of the insurance industry as a whole.
An 2022 online article by Noelle Phillips of The Denver Post carried the headline “Will insurance companies opt to leave Colorado?” I will have a link to that article as well as the Washington Post article in the posting of this column at http://realestatetoday.substack.com
Our legislators took action on this topic with the passage and signing into law of HB23-1174, which instructs the Division of Insurance to study the factors affecting the affordability and availability of homeowners insurance and to make policy recommendations. The division has a deadline of Oct. 2 to re-
ceive your input as well as that of the insurance industry and other stakeholders. I have a link for that, too, in my online posting of this column.
DOI is looking for feedback and comments on a “potential parametric insurance policy concept to help stabilize the homeowners insurance market.” Such a product does not exist currently in the United States, but has existed since 2007 in the Caribbean. The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) has 23 member governments — 19 Caribbean countries and four Central American countries — and has made 60 payouts totaling $262 million to date, such as to Haiti following the August 2021 earthquake. The World Resources Institute, in an October 2020 paper (you’ll find a link for it, too), wrote about CCRIF and how the concept might be replicated in our country.
What’s different about the “parametric” insurance policy is that the policy holder is the government, and that payouts are triggered by specific events, unrelated to the calculation of damages. That allows payouts to be made within 14 days of the triggering event, which in the case of wildfires could be the number of homes destroyed. How those funds are distributed and to whom — such as a public works department, utility, social services agency, contractors, etc. — is spelled out in advance so that the funds can move quickly to provide needed relief and especially infrastructure repairs, as well as providing food, water and shelter if needed.
CCRIF has separate policies for earthquakes, tropical cyclones, excess rainfall and electric utilities. Remember the disastrous situation with Puerto

Rico’s electric grid following Hurricanes Irma and Maria? Unlike Haiti, Puerto Rico is not a country, so it’s not a member of CCRIF, and that 14-day immediate financial assistance was not available to it.
The CCRIF has an excellent website explaining its history, funding and operation: www.ccrif.org.
Colorado is only evaluating a parametric insurance policy for wildfires, where the payouts (and the premiums paid by the state as policyholder) would be pegged to the number of homes lost. But it could also have a policy for flooding that could be triggered, for example, by heavy rainfalls such as those 10 years ago which caused extensive damage in the northern Front Range.
The goals of Colorado’s parametric insurance policy, which would require legislation, are both to provide that kind of quick liquidity to communities and
local governments following a disaster and to give some peace of mind to the insurance companies that the state is providing a backstop, so they don’t stop issuing policies. The funds from such an entity and such a policy can be applied toward the mitigation of the risks it covers, which would provide some of that peace of mind.
If you’re interested in learning more about this insurance product, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has a website that explains the product in great detail and other countries, including in Africa, that have adopted the concept. I’ll have a link for it, too, on my Substack posting.
As the effects of climate change get more intense, you can expect to hear more about how governments adopt tools such as parametric insurance policies to cushion the effect of natural disasters.
Tesla introduced the Powerwall in 2015 as a home battery storage device to provide backup during power outages. As of June 2023, there are 500,000 of the units deployed worldwide, and the Nevada factory is making 6,500/week.
Green Mountain Power in Vermont decided to harness the capacity of their customers’ Powerwalls as an alternative to building additional power plants. It estimates a savings of $3 million per
year by drawing electricity from 4,800 customer-installed Powerwall units to handle peak electrical demands. Customers can pay $55 per month to have the units installed free or can purchase their own units, receiving up to $10,500 to offset their costs. Perhaps this will be a model for other electric utilities. I have posted a link to an extended article about Vermont’s virtual power plant on my Substack.com posting of this article.

Ruben Marquez, 30, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for driving a truck into a crowd of people outside a Golden bar last fall, killing one person and injuring several others.
In August, Marquez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, three counts of vehicular assault, and one count of attempted second-degree assault. e parties previously agreed to a 30-year sentence in the plea agreement, although how much time Marquez served for each charge was subject to the court’s ruling.
Adrian Ponce, 26, was killed in the Oct. 9 incident. ree people were seriously injured, including Rock Rest employees, and other people at the scene sustained minor injuries.
On Sept. 22, Judge Lindsay VanGilder sentenced Marquez to 30 years for the second-degree murder charge, 10 years for the vehicular assault charges, and 12 years for the attempted second-degree assault. e latter two will be served concurrently with the rst.
VanGilder also ordered Marquez to pay about $350,000 total in restitution for Ponce’s funeral expenses and related costs, two victims’ medical expenses and other damages at the scene.
On both Sept. 15 and Sept. 22, Ponce’s family members and friends asked for the heaviest possible sentence against Marquez, saying they’ve been devastated by the loss. In the wake of the Oct. 9 incident, his family members have struggled with anxiety, depression, nightmares, and a constant fear of death, they described.
Ponce’s loved ones described him as a caring, attentive and friendly person who made sure everyone felt included. His mom said he’d always run errands for her and x things around the house, and had a talent for cooking. He loved his family
with all his heart, they said, especially his two young children.
Ponce’s wife, Ashlie Pena, recalled how, the day before Ponce’s death, the family went to the pumpkin patch and had dinner together. While she was thankful for such a memory, she was devastated it was the last day the family spent together.
Now, her 4-year-old son asks regularly about his dad as he can’t fully understand what happened, adding that his behavior has changed dramatically over the last year. His 2-year-old daughter only knows him through photos, she said.
“My husband, my best friend, my children’s father is gone, and he’s never coming back,” Pena continued. “… is is my new reality.”
Ponce’s mom and siblings also described how they’ve struggled to cope with losing their son and brother. His brother said Marquez stole Ponce’s future and the time the family members would’ve had together, and many of his loved ones said they wouldn’t be able to forgive Marquez for what he’d done.
“It shatters my heart,” Ponce’s mom said. “ … My son didn’t deserve any of this.”
In his personal statement, Marquez hoped Ponce’s loved ones and the other victims would be able to forgive him — not for his sake, but for theirs. As his defense attorneys described, Marquez could uniquely identify with their case, as he’s been in the same situation.
Marquez’s older brother, 30-yearold Fausto Marquez, was killed at a Denver birthday party in June 2020. After two years of proceedings, the man charged with the crime was convicted of rst-degree murder, and Marquez attended his sentencing last summer.
He told those present Sept. 22 that forgiveness would “help them in the long run,” as it helped him after his brother’s death. He apologized to all the victims for what happened Oct. 9, saying it wasn’t re ective of the
type of person he is.
“No one deserves to die,” Marquez continued.
Robert Fulcomer, a Rock Rest employee who was seriously injured, stated in a letter to the judge how much his injuries have and still take a toll on his life. However, he was grateful to the hospital sta , the prosecutors and victim advocates, and his loved ones who’ve helped him this past year.
Although their lives are forever connected by the events of Oct. 9, Fulcomer hoped Marquez would become a better person, saying, “His past doesn’t equal his future.”
‘The wrong decision’
Marquez and two of his cousins went to celebrate a birthday at the
Rock Rest Oct. 8, 2022. Ernesto Avila, who owns the truck, drove the group to the bar.
Marquez was on parole for previous felony convictions and wasn’t supposed to be drinking. His defense attorneys admitted this was a serious error in judgment, and that
Marquez was highly intoxicated when the bar closed Oct. 9.
At that point, Ponce and a friend and Marquez and his cousins had a verbal confrontation that escalated into a ght in the parking lot.
In outlining Marquez’s background, his defense attorneys said he was a victim of child abuse around age 6. At 14, he and his mom were assaulted in their home, during which Marquez was stabbed several times. en, his older brother was killed in 2020. us, amid the chaos and violence outside the bar, they said Marquez’s instinct was to protect himself and his family.
Additionally, Marquez is virtually blind and typically wears glasses, they described. e glasses were likely knocked o his face in the
ght, as they were later found on the truck’s passenger-side oor, his defense attorneys said.
Amid all these conditions, they said Marquez made “the wrong decision” in getting behind the wheel, but believed he didn’t intend to hit anyone.
e truck was pulled over shortly after the incident, and those victims with serious injuries were hospitalized. According to prosecutors, Fulcomer wasn’t cleared to work for months; fellow employee Michael Gause had a traumatic brain injury and 47 staples in his head, and didn’t return to work until March; and patron Ronald Fisher su ered broken bones and a head injury as well.
Four others received minor injuries, including Ponce’s friend. ose who witnessed the event described it as being chaotic and scary, with one telling prosecutors, “I never want to see anything like that again.”
Avila, who was driving the truck when it was pulled over, is scheduled to be sentenced for three misdemeanor counts, including driving under the in uence. His sentencing is 2:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Je erson County Courthouse. After almost a year of emotional and stressful proceedings, VanGilder hoped Marquez’s sentencing would help bring all those impacted some amount of healing and closure.

All summer, the Golden Concert Choir hosted a thorough recruitment campaign. e group participated in Bu alo Bill Days and had a booth at the Golden Farmers Market one weekend. Members posted yers at local co ee shops and breweries and promoted the choir online.
Baby Doll (181741) is a 7-year-old male cat. He was nervous at the Shelter but is happy at his foster home, where he enjoys attention from people and playing with toys. A quiet, calm home will be best for Baby Doll. He is available to households with no kids or kids aged 10 or older. Baby Doll is in foster care, so email foster@fas4pets.com if you are interested
is month, the group has seen the fruit of its labor with 15 new members from Golden and surrounding areas, bringing the choir to about 35 total members.
“I love singing, and … I wanted to get back into it and be more social,” said Moira Manning, a new alto who joined the choir at its Sept. 18 rehearsal.
e Golden Concert Choir started rehearsals for its 2023 fall season Sept. 11, with new members accepted through Sept. 25. e nonpro t choir, which was founded in 2000 and had about 60 members at one point in its early years, rehearses weekly at Calvary Church, and hosts performances in December and May.
Sally Berger, a board member and alto in the choir, described how the group kept meeting virtually through the COVID-19 pandemic. She recalled how Director David Bell compiled one performance by splicing together individual videos of the members singing.
Still, it was rough going, and the choir dwindled down to about 12 members, she said.

For its fall 2022 and spring 2023 seasons, the group had 20-25 members with two leaving after the spring season. Maddie Kraft, who joined in fall 2022 and eventually became a board member, and other members put together the recruitment campaign this summer.
e nonpro t is funded by grants, donations and membership dues. With more singers, the choir can meet more of its xed expenses, such as facility costs and paying the director and accompanist, Berger said.
Kraft, who lives in Golden and works in recruitment, said she wanted to help the choir because she appreciated how it’s a welcoming, low-stress environment for people to perform. Members don’t need to audition — they just need to be able to carry a tune — and it’s the perfect starting point for those who’ve never performed in a group before, she continued.
Although Kraft studied music performance in college, not everyone in the choir has a musical background. And for those who do, she said, it’s a non-intimidating way to “re-enter the music space” if
they’ve been on hiatus. Kraft hadn’t performed since the pandemic and moving to Colorado, and after reading about the choir in the “Golden Informer,” she thought it would be a great way to meet people and get back into music.
She’s grateful she did, saying she loves the sense of community among the choir members.
Manning, who lives in the Green Mountain area, performed in her high school choir but hadn’t done much singing since then. After she
met members at their Golden Farmers Market booth this summer, she was excited to join. e fact that she didn’t have to audition was a bonus and she appreciated the warm welcome at the Sept. 18 rehearsal.
‘Less spoken, more felt’ e Golden Concert Choir will host its annual winter concert at 4 p.m. Dec. 2 at Calvary Church. e choir is rehearsing 10 new pieces,
plus a few old favorites, for the performance.
Bell said this year’s theme is “the magic of winter.”
Berger and Holly Bluel, a fellow board member, said Bell always selects music that’s “instructive and beautiful,” and he sometimes writes original pieces for Golden Concert Choir.
After the Dec. 2 concert, the choir will kick o its 2024 spring season in January. Anyone interested can join at that time, Berger said.
Choir members have ranged from college-age adults to 96-year-old retirees, Bell and others described, and some have joined after not having practiced music in years or even decades.
While the current membership skews a little older, Bell and Berger said many of the new members are younger people looking to socialize while practicing music, like Manning.
Whatever their reason for joining, both longtime and new members
said they’ve stayed because of the sense of community.
Berger added that the connection between people who sing together is unique, saying that bond is “less spoken, more felt.”
“Hearing other voices mixing with your own … there’s no joy like that, I think,” she continued.

In an unexpected twist, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names deferred a vote that would have changed the name of Mount Evans back in March.
BY CHRIS KOEBERL CKOEBERL@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COMApplause erupted from the crowd as they listened to a federal board’s decision to rename Mount Evans in Colorado to Mount Blue Sky. Some of those cheering were listening virtually as the U.S. Board on Geographic Names voted 15-1 in favor of the change. ree members abstained in the vote, which took place in Oregon.
“ is was the nal step in the renaming process,” said Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes Gov. Reggie Wassana after the vote.
e name change takes e ect immediately. Wassana said he was glad what had become a long, drawn-out process over the name of the more than 14,000-foot peak in Clear Creek County ended with a solid vote.
“It is a huge step, not only for the Cheyenne and Arapaho people but also for… other allies who worked diligently to begin the healing process, bringing honor to a monumental and majestic mountain,” Wassana said.
e new name for the mountain comes from the Blue Sky Ceremony, a ceremony for all living things, including “men, women, children, plants, earth, water, life,” Chester Whiteman of the Southern Cheyenne tribe said.
At the last minute, the Northern Cheyenne tribe objected to Mount Blue Sky and requested a formal consultation, according to William Walks, a tribal administrator.
at set in motion a series of discussions culminating in a meeting between tribal leaders and the Department of Interior in June.
Several other names were suggested, including Mount Soule, Mount Rosalie, Mount Sisty and Mount Cheyenne-Arapaho, according to the US Board on Geographic Names.
In the end, the board voted on only one name: Mount Blue Sky.
“Changing its name was long overdue, and I thank the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes for leading this e ort,” said Jim Ramey, Colorado state director for e Wilderness Society, a nonpro t conservation organization.
History of namesake Gov. John Evans
Indigenous groups say the mountain celebrated an era of terror. e mountain was named for Colorado’s territorial governor from 1862-1865, John Evans, who played a role in enabling the Sand Creek Massacre.
“Anytime you have to hear of or speak of an individual who wanted to decimate your family or your tribe, it’s really hard,” Wassana said in a November 2022 Clear Creek Courant article.
On a November morning in 1864, U.S. Army
Col. John Chivington and elements of the Colorado Infantry Regiment of Volunteers and Regiment of Colorado Cavalry Volunteers launched an attack on Arapaho and Cheyenne civilians where they camped about 180 miles southeast of Denver. Over the course of eight hours, the troops slaughtered some 230 people, many of them women, children and elderly, according to the National Park Service, which maintains a national historic site in the area where the events occurred. In 1895, the mountain was named for Evans after settlers lobbied the legislature to honor him.
“We are grateful for all of the e orts of Tribal Nations to make this much-needed renaming a reality,” said Native Lands Partnership Director Starlyn Miller. “May the mountain be a place that no longer in icts sorrow and grief but rather a place that brings comfort and healing.”

SPONSOREDBY:
Back in 1859 a few people showed up around here, took a look at the location, noticed that a bunch of other people were heading up into the surrounding mountains looking for gold and decided this would be a good place to start a town. It didn’t take long for things to develop and pretty soon this little town became the Territorial Capitol for Colorado.
Less than 15 years later, a couple of guys from Germany arrived and thought this place needed a brewery. So, in 1873, with about $20,000 and a beer recipe, they started what would eventually become the largest single brewery in the world. Eventually one of them bought out the other and the Coors Brewing Company has been the premier landmark in Golden ever since.
Sure, we have the Colorado School of Mines and Bu alo Bill is buried up on the hill, but neither of those have had the advertising campaign that made the entire nation associate their names with our town quite like Coors has. As far as most people in the country are concerned, Golden is Coors.
I’m just imagining the reaction you would have gotten from Adolf Coors if you were able to go back in time and tell him his name
Colorado Women’s Alliance explains Proposition HH in 2 easy sentences Colorado voters will be asked in November to vote on Proposition HH. As with most ballot measures, it is written to sound very good and appealing. It starts out, “Shall the State reduce property taxes….” And, of course, like most ballot measures, that’s misleading and the actual text of the measure is complex.
You will, and are already, seeing social media posts and news coverage, and have probably received the rst of many mail
would be printed on millions of plastic cups and aluminum cans sold at dozens of sporting events every week. Imagine trying to explain “tailgating” to the poor guy. By the time you got nished trying to ll him in on everything his little beer company has accomplished in the last 150 years, he’d be sending for someone to come get you and lock you away in a mental facility. Just trying to describe why they created a “light” version of his classic beer would be kind of a stretch.
With that image dancing around in your brain, it’s time to let you know that we will be celebrating that phenomenal 150-year anniversary of the Coors Brewing Company with a terri c party in downtown Golden on Saturday, Sept. 30. It’s going to be happening on Washington Avenue, with a Street Party between 11th and 13th Streets and a full-blown Beer Garden being set up in Parfet Park on the corner of 10th Street and Washington. e Beer Garden opens up at noon, the Street Party
starts at 1 p.m. and both run until 6 p.m.
ere’s going to be live music and entertainment, local artisans, brewery tours, limited edition 150th Anniversary merchandise, games, plenty of great food and of course, cold Coors beer! ere is no admission charge and portion of the proceeds from beer sales that day will bene t their Golden community partners. But, do keep in mind that a photo ID for 21+ will be required to purchase beer or branded merchandise. For more information, visit coors. com/150-celebration.
But, wait — there’s more! I mentioned the Colorado School of Mines, and that’s probably the second-best known landmark in Golden, so why not put the two together? Because it also just happens to be Mines Homecoming weekend from ursday, Sept. 28 through Saturday, Sept. 30 with a pretty full schedule of events all weekend.
On ursday you can see a Traditional Polynesian Dance Performance at 6:30 p.m. on Kafadar Commons at about 15th Street on Illinois Street. ere will be food available from 5:45 p.m.
On Friday, there will be a 5 p.m. performance by Comedian Amanda Giles at Bunker Auditorium in
the Green Center located at 16th and Cheyenne Streets. ere’s also a Women’s Soccer Game at 6 p.m. at Stermole Soccer Stadium in the athletic stadium complex. And, of course there’s a huge Bon re at 7 p.m. in Q lot on the north west side of the campus.
Saturday starts with a Homecoming 5K Run at 8 a.m. at Kafadar Coomons , the Homecoming Street Fair and Tailgate Party at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. respectively in Q Lot, with the big Homecoming Football Game against Chadron Stet College kicking o at 12 noon at Marv Kay Stadium in the athletics complex. e evening features a Homecoming Concert by Mob Rich at 7 p.m. in D Lot on Elm Street.
Homecoming information is kind of scattered over several school websites so just do a search for “Colorado School of Mines Homecoming 2023” and check the results. And just so you know… Orediggers rule!

pieces about Proposition HH. You will be bombarded with numbers and formulas and forecasts. One such piece, designed to “simplify” the measure included the following dollar amounts – in just one piece: $1,074 million; $620 million; $2 billion; $145 million; $72 million; $287 million; $3.5 billion; $21 million; $94.3 million; $2.2 billion; $128 million; $161.3 million; $278 million; $351 million.
So, here’s what it all boils down to. Here are the two sentences that you need to know when you vote your ballot this fall:
1) If Proposition HH passes, it will only temporarily reduce property taxes.
2) If Proposition HH passes, it will reduce your Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) refunds permanently.
at’s it. All that mumbo jumbo, simply explained in two sentences. Property owners – your property taxes will still go up, just not as drastically, for a limited time.
Renters – your rent will still go up, because your landlord needs to recoup the increase in taxes.
Everybody – your TABOR refunds (remember those $750 or $1,500 checks?) will permanently be decreased and, because of a change in formula, eventually will go away forever.
e Colorado Women’s Alliance urges you to remember those two simple sentences when it comes time to mark your ballots. Vote “no” on Proposition HH.
Joni Inman, Golden Executive Director of Colorado Women’s AllianceColorado is known for its beauty, mountains and many other attributes that attract newcomers and visitors. Less known is that Colorado ranked seventh in the nation for its suicide rate in 2021. Here, it is the second leading cause of death for ages 10–24, 25–34 and 35–44. For many, the joy of Colorado is overshadowed by the sadness of suicide.
At the Je erson County Sheri ’s O ce, our deputies respond to calls of suicide or attempted suicide every day. In addition to responding to these tragic calls and notifying loved ones, law enforcement experiences its own struggles with suicide. Today, the topic of mental health is no longer taboo. Resources are in abundance. Help is a phone call away. September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and Sept. 26 was National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day. Despite greater awareness, suicide rates in Colorado have increased each of

In the 1800s, a maid allegedly ran out of an open door and fell to her death from an upper oor of a building in Golden.
Some say they have heard operatic singing in a historic home in Georgetown.
Tales of the olden days say there was a secret tunnel under downtown Littleton.
ese stories are shared on ghost tours across the Front Range that immerse visitors in the haunted histories of Colorado cities.
Organized by historians, writers and believers of ghosts, these tours o er creative and entertaining ways to learn the history of Colorado towns while getting in the mood for the spooky season of Halloween. For some, these tours are a fun reason to suspend disbelief and enjoy time with family and friends. For others, they showcase paranormal truths that exist in the places Coloradans live, work and play.
‘A combination of history and haunting’
Georgetown, located about an hour west of Denver in Clear Creek County, has a haunted history. From the historic Hamill House to vigilante justice, the place abounds with ghost stories.
A 1990s television series called “Sightings,” which explored paranormal and extraterrestrial activity, even included a segment that took place in a haunted café in Georgetown.
“When you think about how it was started — it was a mining town — and the fact that the people who came here were looking for a better life, there was a certain energy connected to that,” Anne Marie Cannon, owner and tour guide at Silver Queen Walking Tours, said of Georgetown.
“ at is the kind of energy that has lingered here.”
Cannon’s company o ers various themed tours at di erent times of the year, all rooted in history. e most popular tour she o ers is her ghost tour.
“I always say that my ghost tour is a combination of history and haunting,” Cannon said.
e Georgetown–Silver
Plume National Historic Landmark District, which includes downtown Georgetown, has hundreds of buildings that are protected from the 19th century, she said.
“It makes you feel like you’ve kind of been dropped back in the 1800s when you come here,” she said.
Cannon curates and guides the ghost tours herself, using information from historical research, archival work, letters, books and personal experiences.
e walk is about one mile long and lasts for two hours, she said. Visitors get a guided tour of Georgetown, stopping at di erent locations to learn stories of deaths and murders. ey even sometimes go into properties where the ghost stories take place.
For Cannon, the tours are an interesting way to share history with visitors.
“Even if the story might not be in a history book, I connect the story to the history of (the) place,” she said, adding that she enjoys the creativity she gets to put into her storytelling.
Other tours in the region have di erent formats for their haunted explorations, like e Talking Dead, an immersive haunted scavenger hunt in Golden that combines history and haunts with an interactive adventure.
“Guests are given a map of downtown Golden and it’s their job to nd the locations,” said Anneliese Farmer, who organizes the tours with the immersive theater company, Elevate Immersive. “ e whole goal of the guests’ evening is to visit all of these locations to either talk to a ghost and learn about their story or to get a clue … to basically piece together (their) ending location.”
At the stations with “ghosts,” costumed actors get into character to make the stories more immersive.
Guests on this self-guided tour can also stop at partner bars along the way to get special discounts on drinks.
Living “ghosts” also play a role in Haunts of Littleton, a tour that happens the last two weekends of October in downtown Littleton.
On this tour, guests are guided by “ghosts” and meet storytellers in costumes at each location.
In the early 2000s, three local leaders started the Littleton ghost tour. Greg Reinke, who owns a costume and Halloween store downtown, Brian Vogt of the Denver Botanic Gardens and John Brackney of the South Metro Denver Chamber of Commerce started it to “get things going” in downtown Littleton, Reinke said.
“I knew a bunch of ghost stories from around here, ‘cause I grew up here,” Reinke said. “It was to get some activity down here.”
Haunts of Littleton is now run by the Friends of 444 Foundation, which exists to support the scouts of Troop 444 in Littleton. e tours are executed by volunteers from the community, including youth, and proceeds from the event go to support the troop.
“We are blessed to have some really phenomenal scouts and families,” said Brian Cotter, who helps put on the tours. “We have talent in many di erent areas, and a lot of them have sort of acting backgrounds where they can provide this really exciting presentation to the stories.”
Even with theatrical elements, both Farmer and Cotter said their respective tours are based on historical information.
“All the stories we focus on are real stories of people that lived and worked and shared their lives in Golden and met … a dangerous past through one way or another,” Farmer said.
To write the stories for the immersive scavenger hunt tour, Farmer said her team researches in the library, the history museum and by looking at old newspaper articles.
Cotter said volunteers on his team conduct research for the stories they share. He emphasized that the stories on the tour are not scary and the event is family-friendly.
“ ese are more interesting, sort of haunted historical events or historical persons that have been in this region,” he said. “(Guests are) people that are fascinated by Littleton and some of the history around it and want to be entertained in a novel way.”
The big question
ose who go on ghost tours have a wide range of beliefs, from total skepticism to passionate paranormalists.
Farmer, who identi es as a “huge believer” in ghosts, said she likes bringing light to them in a fun and creative way through ghost tours.
She said ghost stories also continue the generations-long tradition of storytelling in human culture.
A value of the tours, Farmer said, is that they use history to give participants a jumping-o point to dive into paranormal concepts. She said she thinks this is part of the draw for those who participate.
“ is Victorian, macabre, spooky time in history is really compelling to quite a few folks because it feels so far out of reach as to what we’re living in now,” she said. “I think that it’s a form of escapism into the fantastical, but it still is kind of rooted in history — because (the history) did really happen and it did really exist at that time.”
Cotter, who said he tends to believe in ghosts as well, said public interest in ghost tours may

come from the energy surrounding the Halloween season, like any holiday.
“ ere’s lots of reasons that we get together and celebrate,” he said. “ is is an opportunity, as the holiday season starts to come around, that you can get together with friends and family.”
For Cannon, interest in ghosts is tied to something deeper.
She said she started out as a huge skeptic but has had some experiences that have started to change her mind.
“ ere is something,” she said. “I don’t know what it is.”
at question, for Cannon, is what draws people to ghost tours.
“It’s the big question, right?” she said. “What happens to us when we die? What happens to our loved ones? It’s kind of an acceptable, safe place to really think about that stu , contemplate that stu and talk about it. I mean, I think it’s at the root of who we are as human beings.”
Whether the goal is to gather with friends or to re ect on human existence, this is the season to dive into paranormal curiosity, by walking, scavenger-hunting and wondering.
When a tragedy happens, how do the victims and community at large pick up the pieces?
Twenty- ve years after the murder of Matthew Shepard, the Wyoming town of Laramie is still grappling with the reverberations of the event. at story is the focus of“ e Laramie Project,” the latest production at the Arvada Center, 6901 Wadsworth Blvd. e show runs from Friday, Sept. 29 through Sunday, Nov. 5. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, 1 p.m. on Wednesday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Co-directed by Kate Gleason and Rodney Lizcano and based on hundreds of actual interviews conducted by Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic eater Project, the show examines how the college town attempted to contend with the hate crime.
e Arvada Center production is getting input from someone who was there at the time — costume designer Nicole Watts, who largely grew up in Laramie and was 14 when the murder occurred.
“When I tell most people in the theater industry I’m from Laramie, this is the rst show they ask me about,” Watts said. “But I’d avoided it for the last 25 years, so when I nally read it, I had a much more visceral reaction than I expected.”
e fact that she spends so much time in Laramie and knows some of the people depicted in the play provided Watts with the inspiration
to get as many of the details right as possible.
“I went and thrifted at Laramie and tried to nd certain touches that I knew from my time there,” she said. “ ere are a lot of touches people may not even notice, but I wanted them to be accurate.”
e community is really the heartbeat of the show and the humans a ected in large and small ways linger with the audience member long after the show is over. And especially with the current barrage of legislation against members of the LGBTQIA+ community, the story is sadly as relevant as ever.
it became a jumping o point for a national conversation that needed to happen,” Watts said. “It still needs to happen.”

Regardless of what you think you know or remember about this crucial event, you’re going to come away with a new understanding of the people involved and the ripples it created — ripples our society is still dealing with.

Nature calls Congregation Beth Evergreen in an important way. Outdoor services and meditations at the synagogue’s outdoor amphitheater are common, and services for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, on Sept. 15-17 were no exception. Rabbi Jamie Arnold led an outdoor meditation on Sept. 16 with congregants sitting in the morning sun to contemplate renewing their lives and their connection to the natural world.
“Among CBE’s core values is an alignment with nature and appreciation of the natural world around
us,” according to Sarah Hess, CBE’s director of operations. “Our amphitheater is certainly unique (for synagogues). I know a lot of our members come up from Littleton, Golden and Morrison because they appreciate how we are in sync with nature and want to have an elevated experience.”
CBE’s amphitheater, called the Open Sky Amphitheater or OSA, is an outdoor venue where the community, both the synagogue’s and groups outside the synagogue, can join together. e word “Osa” in Hebrew means “to make” or “she makes.”

e amphitheater, which opened in November 2021, now has lighting, so it can be used for evening events.
Arnold strummed his guitar, accompanied by Veronica Gruning and Laura Berman, and they sang Hebrew verses and songs that mixed with the cool mountain air. Arnold, who has been CBE’s rabbi for 18 years, led congregants through breathing activities.
Arnold also blew the shofar, an ancient musical instrument usually made from a ram’s horn that is blown in synagogue services on Rosh Hashanah and at the end of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, which is Sept. 25.
In fact, on Sept. 17, CBE joined with three nearby synagogues to continue Rosh Hashanah at Lair
o’ the Bear, and Arnold invited congregants to bring their own shofars to play during that service.
“So much of the spirituality we are trying to perpetuate comes from the beauty and solace of nature,” Arnold explained.
He spoke of the earth, re, air and water within people, and he
sang, “Love the earth, love the sky, heat of re and drops of water.”
He talked about clouds, and how they can be a symbol of fear and unknowing such as smoke clouds from wild res, or they can be a symbol of protection and safety because they bring cleansing, cooling rain.
“To know something is wrong is di erent than bearing the torch saying, ‘I only have the right answer,’” he said. “Clouds remind us of uncertainty — re or rain, shelter or storm. We are called to choose life, and to listen to and celebrate the wonder of creation.”
e Cat Cares Society, a nonpro t Lakewood cat shelter, recently won a four-star rating for its work as a nonpro t.
Charity Navigator has designated Cat Cares Society, located at 5787 W. 6th Ave. in Lakewood as a “Give with Con dence” charity for “using donations e ectively.” e designation is a boon for Cat Cares society, however, the nonpro t’s service to the community over the last 42 years already speaks volumes.
e shelter’s Executive Director Erin-Claire Michaels explained that Cat Cares Society has been serving Je co felines and their owners since 1981.
“We initially were founded by a veterinarian and a colleague who really just saw the need for additional outlets for cats,” Micheals said. She went on to say that in 1981, there was a signi cant gap in outlets with knowledge about care for aging cats and those with medical issues.
Michaels said that the illness FIV, or feline immunode ciency virus, was one of the illnesses that made cats ineligible for being sheltered. host of illnesses.
Society was a place that took in and treated cats with FIV while educating owners on the realities of the virus. About 40 years later, shelters in the U.S. changed policy to do the same.
“ ey always say that dog behavior is about 10 years ahead of cat
behavior. In a lot of ways that’s the same thing in general sheltering and adoption,” Michaels said. e shelter works to help other cats with issues that make them unfavorable for adoption.
“Our vision, our mission is taking cats that didn’t really have an outcome elsewhere, or that people didn’t think were adoptable, necessarily, and just demonstrating that all cats, regardless of their history and their medical needs are adoptable,” Michaels said.
In addition to being an open space for cats, the shelter also supports programs such as Nibbles and Kibbles, a food pantry that serves only cat food and supplies, according to Michaels.
“And then we also have our temporary care program,” Michaels explained. “ at’s been around for quite some time where we o er space for owned cats whose owners are in a time of crisis. We believe that every person deserves a pet in times of crisis. Your pet can be your lifeline. And so we have the opportunity to o er space for cats while their owners are going through a crisis. So that owner knows that their child is safe, that their cat is getting excellent care.”
e shelter itself is unorthodox, designed to allow an open space for the cats, their owners, volunteers and people looking to adopt.

If retaining and developing women leaders are priorities in your company, what actions are you taking to achieve sustainable results?
Your organization, like others around the globe, may be struggling to overcome what’s now been coined the “SHEcession.” During the height of the pandemic, the unemployment rate for women was recorded about 2% higher than that of men — with the employment rate of women of
color taking the biggest hit, according to statistics from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research.
It’s now more critical than ever to take an intentional and systematic approach to retaining and developing women leaders. Your HR function may have created policies or processes aimed at supporting the women in your organization. Maybe diversity training or gender-specific hiring and promoting goals are in the mix. Perhaps some of the policies aimed at increasing flexibility that were established in the height of the pandemic are here to stay, in recognition that women are commonly burdened with more caregiving responsibilities than men.
But HR policies and initiatives are just one piece of what’s needed to prepare and encourage women employees to take on leadership roles. More is needed, and it starts with your culture.
5 Keys to Success
The culture of an organization or a department — and even the views of a single manager — can have a direct impact on whether women stay with an organization or leave for something better. The informal patterns of influence and unspoken performance expectations play a role. And, of course, a woman’s individual experiences and perspectives are powerful factors, too.
To provide an equitable work experience that helps to support, retain, and develop women leaders, organizations should take a broad, “whole systems” view.
1. Address women’s leadership challenges and needed competencies.
Ensure your female leaders have the experiences and the resources to learn what they need most. Interventions for developing women leaders on an individual level could include targeted training, guidance for onthe-job learning, coaching opportunities, and mentoring at work.
It’s important that the organization — and individuals — are clear on the perspectives, skills, and capabilities that are needed to be effective in various leadership roles in your organization. In general, our research has
found that:
The top four leadership challenges for women are typically establishing credibility, managing up and across the organization, negotiating adeptly, and influencing others.
The two most important competencies to start developing are managing organizational complexity and strategic thinking and acting.
2. Leverage the power of choosing.
Individual women also need to be intentional about their careers and their development as leaders.
The power to choose is sometimes overlooked by women, due in part to cultural conditioning. So encourage female leaders in your organization to recognize their own agency and: Exert greater influence over the choices they make.
Take the lead in shaping conversations about their career.
Take ownership over their career choices.
Create a personal leadership development strategy.
Be as strategic about family responsibilities as they are about workplace roles.
Women leaders should receive messaging from the organization that embraces a more individualized — and less stereotypical — perspective on professional and personal roles that may have historically been categorized as “men’s roles” and “women’s roles.” It’s all part of living with intention, both at work and at home.
3. Rethink systems and challenge assumptions.
Helping individual women become better leaders is not enough. While there are no easy fixes for rebalancing the global gender gap, one thing is clear: the pandemic and consequent “SHEcession” have highlighted systemic imbalances that have a great impact on women, organizations, and larger society. It’s clear now that we do not need to change women — we need to change systems.
Look for ways that unconscious bias in the organization affects opportunities and motivation for women, and make increasing gender equity in the workplace a priority for your organization.
When your leaders (at every level) are able to recognize conscious and unconscious biases and imbalances, they can proactively work to address
them. The key is to create an environment where women leaders feel the psychological safety to speak out and have the backing of an organization committed to driving widespread culture change.
Take concrete steps to evolve your organizational culture to orient toward building greater equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) — starting with a focus on equity — and connect developing women leaders to your broader EDI approach.
Meeting scheduling, social norms, networking opportunities, mentoring programs, and talent management policies and processes are some potential areas for focused improvement. Also, ensure that managers are aware that they should ask, rather than assume that they know, what women in the workplace want from work (this is also a good idea with all employees).
Above all, organizations should create the culture and systems that make it easier to have candid conversations.
4. Provide flexible women’s leadership development experiences.
Talented women want organizations to invest in their development, but be sure to include them in the program selection process. Offer flexible formats, including virtual options, and provide “air cover” and the permission for women leaders to put their dayto-day work responsibilities on hold to make space for their development.
Another consideration is whether an all-women or all-gender experience is more beneficial for your organization’s unique situation. Both approaches can have a positive effect on retaining and developing women leaders. When making the decision, evaluate these factors:
Are women a demographic minority in the leadership ranks of your organization? If so, they may benefit from an all-women leadership development experience. The opportunity to connect and network with other women across their ranks can sometimes be more meaningful when it’s less available in their day-to-day work lives.
Do you have executive-level support? All-women programs are most effective when they have the explicit support and involvement of executive sponsors. This sends a message to women leaders that their needs are seen and that the organization is in-
vesting in the value they are capable of creating.
Is the development hosted within your organization? If so, sponsoring and mentoring women on an ongoing basis should also be considered. Doing so can provide guidance and support from senior leaders to help women integrate what they’ve learned into day-to-day operations.
Mixed-gender leadership development settings are also highly beneficial. After all, women lead in organizations that are racially, culturally, socioeconomically, and gender diverse. All-gender development can help participants network, influence, and lead across demographics more effectively. And for women leaders struggling with burnout, it can be validating to hear that many of their challenges are shared across genders, functions, and even industries.
5. Create the right networks. The right relationships and ties are an asset in getting access to information, earning promotions, and gaining opportunities. Effective leaders rely on key networks and trusted partners to influence others and to get results. Many women have struggled with networking, especially during the pandemic — often due to a combination of factors including lack of time, cultural programming, and the belief that networking is insincere, manipulative, or inauthentic. But the networks that come easily are not necessarily the most beneficial. Organizations can support women in developing the relationships they need to succeed. Women need a network of champions, including mentors, sponsors, and coaches. This can help women leaders gain a clear understanding of the network they have, compared to the network they need. New relationships and new connections can be built, with both the short and long term in mind.
Organizations serious about retaining and developing women leaders will want to ensure they are helping all their talent build the right relationships, political skills, and networks to succeed.

(Family Features) Many young professionals, especially women, face unique challenges in navigating workplace cultures. Passionate about mentoring young professionals and sharing her methods for success, Morgan DeBaun, founder and CEO of digital media and technology company Blavity, partnered with Sharpie — makers of a wide selection of permanent markers, pens, highlighters and more for the classroom, office and home — to share these steps you can take and skills you can build during the early stages of your career to enhance your long-term goals.
Be proactive: Take initiative and identify areas you can contribute beyond your assigned tasks. Instead of waiting to be asked to do something, draft an email, spreadsheet or project board that could benefit the team. Showing a willingness to go above and beyond may lead to additional projects or responsibilities being sent your way in the future.
Write everything down: Putting your dreams and goals to paper can help you commit to them, track progress and stay on course to achieve them. Additionally, particularly in meetings, your brain is processing new information, ways of thinking and operational systems all while you are trying to come across as engaged and personable. Jotting down key action items and learnings along the way can save you later. Being an active listener and note-taker can increase your ability to retain information and contribute to your team.
Identify useful productivity tools: Look for tools and programs that can help make you more productive and successful then leverage them in your personal workflow. Whether it’s an email scheduling tool, calendar software or favorite writing utensil, ensure you are taking advantage of things that can help you succeed.
Develop and strengthen your organizational skills: Regardless of what role you are in, being organized and structured in the way you work can help keep you on track as you grow in your career. Whether it’s a smartphone app, old-fashioned to-do lists on paper or desktop reminders on your computer, find a system that works for you and stick with it — refining the approach as you go — for best results.
Embrace teamwork and learn from your peers: Across your company, you are likely working with bright, talented people who may have completely different skill sets and ways of working and thinking than you. Set up 15- to 20-minute virtual coffee chats to meet people not on your team during your first 90 days as a way to connect with your coworkers and learn more about not only them but the company and its environment as a whole.
Say yes to opportunities: Whether it is a work event, new project, meeting or class, take advantage of prospects presented to you. Taking advantage of opportunities to network, learn and grow in your career can help lead you on the trajectory you are aiming for.
Evergreen, Colorado, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, is not only known for its breathtaking natural beauty but also for its vibrant business community. In recent years, this picturesque town has seen a surge in female entrepreneurs who are making a significant impact on the local economy. These women are breaking barriers, shattering stereotypes, and carving their own paths in various industries, showcasing the unstoppable spirit of Evergreen’s businesswomen.
Lisa Perl and Kristen Porter are well known in the Evergreen area as owners of Evergreen Bread & Cocktail Lounge along with John Porter. The team had a vision of a community-focused restaurant and bakery which can bring friends and family together. They make food
using old-fashioned techniques and whole ingredients, using the freshest produce and high-quality baking ingredients to create delicious and healthy meals. As business leaders, Lisa and Kris have learned a few things over the years navigating the world of small business and entrepreneurship. Their journey offers valuable insights and inspiration for women seeking to make their mark in the world of entrepreneurship:
1. Build a Strong Network: Surround yourself with a supportive network of mentors, peers, and advisors. Networking is not just about who you know but also about who knows you.
2. Continuous Learning: Stay curious and committed to learning. The business world is ever-evolving, and acquiring new
skills and knowledge is key to staying competitive.
3. Embrace Risk: Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks. Success often requires stepping out of your comfort zone and seizing opportunities.
4. Confidence Matters: Believe in your abilities and ideas. Confidence can be a powerful tool in breaking through barriers.
5. Work-Life Balance: Finding balance between your professional and personal life is crucial for long-term success and well-being.
6. Advocate for Yourself: Don’t hesitate to speak up and advocate for what you deserve. Negotiate for fair compensation and recognition.
7. Mentorship: Seek out mentors
who can provide guidance and support. Learning from those who have been there can be invaluable.
8. Persistence: Don’t be discouraged by setbacks. Success often comes to those who persist in the face of challenges.
9. Give Back: As you succeed, remember to give back to your community and support the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Kris and Lisa are more than successful business owners; they are role models for women aspiring to advance in business. The journey of Lisa and Kristen underscores that the time for women to advance in business is now, and with the right vision and dedication, success is well within reach.
Next fall, when the Colorado School of Mines cross country teams compete at Denver’s Washington Park, Molly Maksin plans to be cheering them on from the sidelines.
But, for now, she’s excited for her nal season on the course, as she and her fellow Orediggers have a lot they want to accomplish between now and then.
e Mines cross country teams are quickly building on last year’s successes, as the women’s team placed rst and the men’s team placed second in the Sept. 16 Roadrunners Invitational.
Last year, the men’s team won the NCAA Division II national title, with Dillon Powell claiming the individual title, and the women’s team took home the bronze. ey’re currently ranked No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, among Division II programs.
Maksin, a graduate student who placed 12th at last year’s national meet, said she was recovering from an illness when she competed at the Sept. 16 Roadrunners Invitational. She was simply getting a workout in and helping pace a freshman runner and ended up placing seventh, which was a welcome surprise.
Coach Chris Siemers said he was happy with both teams’ performances at Washington Park, saying the men’s team mostly had younger runners competing to gain experience. e Orediggers had serious competition, including NCAA Division I team Air Force and several ranked Division II teams.
“It’s always tough when you get into the bigger invitationals because you’re lining up against several teams that are hungry and ready to race us,” Siemers said, adding that he feels the Orediggers have a target on their backs after their recent successes.
On Sept. 22, the Mines runners
were out at Arvada’s Stenger Sports Complex training for their Oct. 6-7 meets in Colorado Springs and Chicago. Siemers said the teams are strategizing which runners will go to which meet for the nal weekend of the regular season.
Maksin and Duncan Fuehne, a graduate student who nished third in the 2022 men’s national race, both planned to compete at the Chicago-area Lewis Crossover Invitational on Oct. 7. Fuehne said it’ll be his rst meet of the year, as he traveled internationally late in the summer and wanted to have a big training block before competing again.
Sea-level races like Chicago are always fun, Maksin said, and she was excited to see how the younger runners did in their rst sea-level race.
Afterward, the Orediggers will be back at Denver’s Washington Park Oct. 21 for the RMAC champion-
ship races. Maksin said it feels “like a home race” with so many Mines fans on the sidelines.
Fuehne said Mines will need that support Oct. 21, as it’ll be up against No. 2 Adams State. However the race turns out, he said, “It’ll be good competition and a chance to see where we’re at as a team.”
For the 2023 season, the Orediggers’ true nish line is the NCAA Division II nationals Nov. 18 in Joplin, Missouri. And there are plenty of obstacles on the course to replicating last year’s successes.
For the reigning national champions, Mines lost four of its seven top runners, including individual national champion Dillon Powell. Fuehne, graduate student Loic Scomparin, and redshirt sophomore Paul Knight returned, and Mines added promising transfer students Logan Bocovich and JP
Rutledge, Siemers said.
“It’s a whole new season, a whole di erent team,” Siemers said of possibly repeating as national champions. “We’re racing a lot of strong competition. … We’re focused on what we can do to be the best we can. When we line up against those teams in November, hopefully we’re ready to defend the title.”
Mines won national titles in 2015 and 2019 as well, but has yet to win consecutive championships, Fuehne pointed out. He was condent that, if the Orediggers work together and push each other, they can “do something special again this year.”
For the Mines women’s team, Siemers said its competitors are looking to be the best they’ve ever been this year, with “lots of depth and lots of contenders for individual national titles.”
While it’s a tough task ahead, he and Maksin were con dent the Orediggers were up for the challenge. Maksin particularly praised the younger runners, saying the team has a bright future, both this postseason and beyond.
Maksin recalled being a rst-year runner on the talented 2019 team that made program history with its rst national podium appearance. Now, she hoped to bookend it with another historic year, potentially with the program’s rst runner-up trophy or better.
“It’ll be fun and a lot of work to try and replicate (last year’s results),” Maksin continued. “But, cross country is ‘any given day.’ It just depends on how everyone’s feeling come November.”
While Siemers expected to have a better idea of the Orediggers’ capabilities and their opponents’ after the Oct. 6-7 meets, he’s generally pleased with how the 2023 season’s shaping up.
“So far, we’re healthy, and that’s the most you can ask for,” he said. “… I think everyone’s in a good spot and working hard.”

ere are some cats that may need a smaller space,” Michaels said. “So, we can make sure that we’re monitoring, getting the medical care that they need. But cats do not want to be in a small space. And so our o ering an open space really allows their stress levels to go down.”
Michaels thanks the Cat Cares Society donors and volunteers for the support to operate in such a capacity
“What I’ve been so amazed by during my time here is the really strong sense of community Cat Cares has, that we have just amazing donors and supporters,” Michaels said. “And that allows us to really adopt some cats that are considered very challenging.”
She explained how those challenges are not barriers to adoption.
“What we nd is that (the cats)
are not (challenging cases) because their personalities shine through. ey meet their matches with their people. And some of the things that people are sort of afraid of from a medical perspective go to the background because the cat shines through.”
