ey came to the market with a dream and found a community.
e Golden Farmers Market has returned for its 21st year, welcoming several new vendors throughout the season. Whether it’s fresh produce, plants, clothing or artwork, these newcomers have a wide variety of wares to o er.
According to the Golden Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the annual market, this season’s new vendors include but aren’t limited to:
Alyth Active; Colorado Fresh Farmers/Go Farm Growers Collective; OG Bakery; Mountain Freedom Coins; Plant Life; Superganix; and Zena Johnson Art.
Some of them are Golden residents, like Zena Johnson who graduated from Golden High School in 2022. She’s nishing up her gap year before starting at e Savannah College of Art and Design this fall.
Johnson grew up frequenting the Golden Farmers Market as a customer, so it’s been a bit surreal to be on the other side of it as a vendor. She’s been selling her oil paintings, prints and original stickers, and will be available at the Golden market through July 22.
Johnson explained that this was her rst time as a vendor, and Golden is her only market she’s participating in this summer. Most vendors participate in multiple.
Overall, she said, she’s been learning and “seeing what it takes” to be a full-time artist, and start saving money for college. She’s also had a fun time meeting other artists, saying one woman was so inspired by their conversation that she wanted to start painting.
“Everyone is super open,” Johnson continued. “It’s good experience (for me). I’m meeting a lot of the community this way.”
Golden resident and Plant Life owner Sharon Bell has loved that aspect of the farmers market as well. She’s enjoyed sharing her plants and making connections with customers and fellow vendors.
“I wanted to be part of the community,” she continued. “ … I just put myself out there, and everyone’s been very receptive.”
Finding inspiration in the great outdoors
After she moved to Colorado from Louisiana in Dec. 2021, Bell started her company with a green thumb and a dream. She built greenhouses at her Golden home,
where she grows a variety of vegetables, herbs and microgreens.
She summarized her business model as: “Small farming with big results.”
This is Bell’s first summer as a vendor, and she’s had great success at both Golden and Arvada’s markets. She’ll be at the Golden one through July 22, and then on alternating weekends after that.
Bell chose to live in Golden
because of how the community seems to share her preference for “country living.”
Zach and Corinne Scott, who run Mountain Freedom Coins, said Golden’s reputation as an “outdoorsy community” was one of the reasons they decided to join as vendors this year.
The two sell commemorative coins — styled after challenge coins that are popular among military personnel and emergency responders — for all 58 of Colorado’s 14ers. They also have coins for other iconic destinations like Garden of the Gods and the Mani-
tou Springs Incline.
Zach, a veteran, described how he was trying to stay busy in 2020, and started climbing the 14ers and designing the coins for each of them.
Zach said the coins have really inspired people, saying one of the few upsides of the COVID-19 pandemic was how “it forced people to go outside.” While most buy them after a climb, the Scotts are seeing more customers buying the coins beforehand and taking photos with them at the summits.
The Scotts have participated in other smaller markets around
their home in Littleton, and have been a drop-in vendor at the Golden market before. This year, though, they signed up to participate through the latter half of the season.
Zach and Corinne described how they love the customers they’ve met in Golden. The market has such a great environment, they said, as both the organizers and fellow vendors put a tremendous amount of effort into it.
Now, the Scotts and the other newcomers want to do likewise, so more vendors will want to join next year.
This past weekend I had an interesting conversation with fellow “seniors” who are contemplating their next step in life.
They own a single-family detached home with lots of yard work to keep it looking beautiful. They love their home but feel the need to simplify their life as they age. (They’re in their 70s.)
Their options vary from downsizing to a patio home, moving to a 55+ rental (which Rita and I did last year), or moving out-of-state or out of the country. The political turmoil is what’s behind the last option, and Portugal has caught their attention.
This couple is also feeling an urgency to choose, because they know this is the time of year when the landscaping looks its best, and they don’t want to miss that window of opportunity.
Putting my “consultant” hat on, I had some insights of my own to share with them.
My first insight was that you don’t want to wait until you have to sell, such as from illness or death of a spouse. This couple is in excellent health, and that’s
what you want when you undertake such a serious life change.
My second insight was that renting is actually a great way to procrastinate, taking the pressure off choosing those other options. As a renter, you get to decide a year from now when your one-year lease expires. At that time you can buy that patio home, move locally, out-of-state or to Portugal — or you can renew your lease and put off the decision for another 12 months.
As a renter, especially in an apartment building or 55+ community, you are free to travel and check out all those options. And, since you sold your house already, you could be a cash buyer if buying is what you decide to do.
Selling your current house and buying a replacement home at the same time can be really strenuous in terms of moving. If you rent, you can take your time to move out of your current home, and you can take your time again when you decide to buy next year or the year after.
A third insight is financial. This couple owns their house “free and clear.”
When they sell, they’ll have nearly a million dollars that they can invest, enhancing their retirement income. That equity isn’t earning them anything sitting in their paid-for home. The income from the proceeds of selling will likely exceed what they pay for rent.
Lastly, they’ll be able to enjoy worryfree vacations. As a renter, they’ll be in a “lock-and-leave” environment like Rita and I are — able to go on cruises or other trips without any concern about breakins, snow-shoveling, lawn care or frozen pipes.
As a Realtor and homeowner, I never
thought that I’d be a renter again, but I could tell that we were at the top of the market and that by “cashing out” on our single-family home in Golden, we’d have the freedom to make another decision at any time later on and not have to worry about anything. And because we had to downsize to sell our 4,000-sq.-ft. home and move into an 1,100-sq.-ft. apartment, that hard work was behind us. It was a great feeling when that downsizing was complete.

Starting this month, I am partnering with Megan Aller (right) of First American Title, in providing a statistical analysis of the prior month’s real estate activity in the Denver metro area. Megan is renowned for her diligent and in-depth analysis of the market, so, while this is under my byline, I am really conveying what she has told me.
As the Denver market enters a cooler season, the landscape is undergoing a notable shift with rising inventory and falling demand. This phenomenon, known as retraction, is causing a seasonal decline in prices as the balance between supply and demand evolves.
Both attached and detached homes currently have a supply of 1.3 months, indicating limited inventory. However, experts predict supply will likely increase in the coming months. The shift towards a cooler market creates a favorable environment for prospective buyers. With a decrease in multiple offers and the potential for price adjustments, buyers have an opportunity to make their move in a less competitive market. Whether they are first-time homebuyers or looking to upgrade, the current market conditions present an opening for strategic decisionmaking.

Now’s the perfect time to get rid of all those cans of paint lingering in the basement and the electronics collecting dust in the closets.
e Rotary Club of Golden is hosting a recycling event for electronics and paint from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 15 in the Golden High School’s parking lot. All items are free to drop o , with the exception of TVs for $30.
Additionally, the club will accept monetary donations toward its youth programming, including scholarships and counseling services for GHS students.
Event organizer Tom Baker said the club hopes to host this annually. It had a paint recycling event last October but couldn’t host the electronics side yet.
e goal, he continued, is to help Goldenites “get rid of excess items and repurpose them in a sustainable way.” e club’s partnering with two local companies who will repurpose the paints and electronics however they can.
Baker said this goes hand-in-hand with the Rotary Club’s newest focus area — protecting the environment.
Plus, it’ll raise money for high schoolers’ scholarships and counseling services, among other youth
programs. After its peach sale and golf tournament, Baker hoped to see this event become the club’s third-biggest annual fundraiser.
“It’s a great thing for people to contribute to,” Baker said of the recycling event. “They’re able to get rid of these paints and electronics that are just hanging
around their house. They’re able to support youth programs and protect the environment. It’s a win-win-win.”
Along with the July 15 electronics and paint recycling event,
the Rotary Club’s also accepting orders for “Peaches for a Purpose” on its website. Pick-up will be Sept. 2 at the Jeffco Fairgrounds. For more information on either event, visit GoldenRotary.org.
While it was missing that reworks nale, folks still ocked to Golden to enjoy Independence Day with music, food and festivities in Lions Park.
e 51st annual 4th of July Festival is cohosted by the city and the Lions Club and raises about $30,000 annually. Co-organizer Sondra Welsh said the proceeds go toward local charities and scholarships for Golden High School students.
is year’s festival drew about 8,600 people throughout the day, according to Welsh.
e end-of-festival reworks were postponed due to inclement weather, and city o cials hoped to host the show later in the summer. Over the years, attendees have described how Lions Park o ers the perfect atmosphere for Fourth of July festivities, as it’s close to downtown and Clear Creek, and has plenty of shade. Plus, it always draws a fun crowd of locals, visitors, music fans, food fans and more.
James Harvey remembers when there were two Air Forces.
“One comprised us, and the other was for the whites,” explained the soon-to-be centenarian from his home in Lakewood, Colorado.
Harvey knows this as fact because he’s one of just a handful of remaining Tuskegee Airmen, a group of Black military pilots and airmen who fought not only against enemy aircraft but against overt racism in the same Air Force they pledged to serve.
Born July 13, 1923, in Montclair, New Jersey, James H. Harvey III was the oldest of four children born to James and Cornelia Harvey. He attended high school in Pennsylvania, where he was an outstanding student, the captain of the basketball team, class president, and graduated as valedictorian.
Harvey said he never encountered much racism until he raised his right hand, swore an oath to serve and protect his country — and entered the segregated U.S. Army.
Drafted in 1943, he was soon reassigned to the Army Air Corps, the predecessor of today’s modern U.S. Air Force.
Harvey will tell you in great detail that things in the military were di erent back then.
Very di erent — especially if you were a Black man.
“You just go with the ow,” said Harvey of how he coped. “You just go with the ow or something happens — something mysteriously happens. So, I just went with the ow.”
When asked why he did, he replied, “Because I wanted to live.”
Harvey settled into military service, classi ed as an engineer. As the war in the Paci c raged, engineers were needed to build and maintain the many makeshift jungle runways used by American forces. But Harvey was more interested in ying planes than building places for them to land. So, he applied to the Aviation Cadet Training Program in hopes of being accepted into the Tuskegee Flight Training Program in Alabama, a separate school designated for Black pilots.
In 1925 the U.S. Army War College released called “ e Use of Negro Manpower in War.” Many say this report “set the overall tone” for how the military viewed Black men.
e report stated they “lacked intel-
ligence and were cowardly under combat conditions” and lacked the “ability to operate complex machinery.”
To prove this, the U.S. Army set up an “experiment” in 1941 to prove the ndings of the War College Report.
Tuskegee was an experiment that was designed to fail — to prove that Black men didn’t have the capacity to y.
But instead, the program produced some of the nation’s most pro cient ghter pilots.
“I applied. I was accepted,” said Harvey. “However, I had to take an examination rst, and there were 10 of us that reported to Bolling Field to take this test — nine whites and myself.”
Both Black and white candidates took the same preliminary tests to get into the Aviation Cadet Program. Black pilots, however, would be trained at a segregated eld in Alabama.
Testing for this program was known among servicemembers to be notoriously rigorous and particularly unforgiving.
“Well, we took the examination, did everything they wanted us to do, and when the dust cleared, there were only two of us standing — this white guy and myself,” Harvey said.
Long were the hours and challenging were the tasks for Harvey, a selfdescribed perfectionist.
“If everything is perfect, there’s no challenge after that,” he said. “I never dreamed or thought about washing out in ying school. I knew I was gonna make it because I did everything right.”
Because, as a Black man, he had to.
“You only had so many hours or days to learn something and if you didn’t, you were out. It’s that simple,” Harvey said. “You only had a certain amount of time to learn something and if you exceeded that time, you were gone.”
When asked if he’s still a perfectionist, he grins.
“Well, I’m back at it,” he laughs. “I got married, so that was kind of the end of the perfectionism, but my wife passed, so I’m back at it again.” Perfectionism.
“I’ve always been that way,” Harvey said. “Like Disney, when I was growing up… the Disney characters, I’d sit down and draw them — they were better than what Disney put out!”
Former fighter pilot who served in the once-segregated U.S. military talks missions, a missing trophy and which ‘Top Gun’ movie he prefersRetired Lt. Col. The former fighter pilot and Tuskegee “Top Gun” says when it comes to the Tom Cruise “Top Gun” movies, “I liked the first one better.”
don’t think Minnie was on the scene yet.”
So, what should we call you?
Harvey earned his wings at Tuskegee Army Air Field on Oct. 16, 1944, near the end of the war. A graduate of Class 44-4, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and began his career as a ghter pilot.
While many Tuskegee Airmen were already ying in Europe, protecting heavy bomber aircraft on their way to strategic targets, Harvey did not get that opportunity.
“ at’s because Hitler knew I was coming and he gave up the following month,” he joked. “I was supposed to ship in April 1945. And I had my bags packed, ready to catch the train, and I got a message the war was over and they expected the wind-up of the whole European theater.”
On July 26, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981, creating the President’s Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services and banning segregation in the Armed Forces.
Harvey says the order was a step in the right direction, but it also meant his unit would be disbanded and its personnel integrated into other units that would “have” them.
les — which included their o cial photos — were forwarded to the gaining military unit.
“So, you see, the wing commander had our picture,” Harvey said. “So, Eddie and I report to Misawa, Japan, and before we got there, he had all the pilots report to the base theater and he told them, ‘We have these two Negro pilots coming in and they will be assigned to one of the squadrons.’ e pilots said, ‘No way are we going to y with them. No way.’”
Harvey said he and Drummond were told about the meeting by the pilots themselves.
Regardless of the sentiment, Harvey and Drummond were there to stay and were assigned to a unit ying the Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star.
As they wrapped up their initial meeting, Harvey said the man who would be their new wing commander casually asked, “So, what do you want us to call you?”
An uncomfortable moment of silence ensued.
“I said, ‘Well, I’m a rst lieutenant and Eddie Drummond is a second lieutenant… how about lieutenants Harvey and Drummond?’”
First ‘Top Gun’
In January 1949, the newly-
nery meet to be held at Las Vegas Air Force Base, Nevada.
It was o cially called the United States Continental Gunnery Meet, which would later evolve into the USAF William Tell Competition. Other derivatives would include Gunsmoke and Red Flag.
Harvey’s unit, the 332nd Fighter Group, selected 1st Lt. Harvey III, 1st Lt. Harry Stewart Jr., and Capt. Alva Temple. ey were all Black pilots, including the alternate pilot, 1st Lt. Halbert Alexander.
“We met with Col. Davis (Col. Benjamin O. Davis, Jr.), prior to leaving for the competition,” Harvey said. “We chit-chatted, and his nal remark was, ‘If you don’t win, don’t come back.’ And with those words of encouragement, o we went.”
It was May 1949.
e competition for “Top Gun” would prove formidable in the conventional piston category, ying the North American P-51 Mustang and the North American F-82 Twin Mustang.
ese were some of the best pilots and aircraft maintenance teams in the country ying some of the most advanced aircraft in inventory.
“And we’re ying the obsolete P-47 underbolt,” Harvey said “It was big, clumsy — and heavy.”
“Well, we won the meet,” said Harvey. “Our closest competitor was the P-51 out t… they were only 515,000 points behind us.”
They were the winners, but…
Each year, the Air Force Association publishes an almanac citing overall force strength, statistics and such — including all winners of the weapons meet from 1949 through the present day.
“But, each year when that almanac came out, the winner of the 1949 weapons meet was mysteriously listed as ‘unknown,’” Harvey points out. “We didn’t nd out, we, meaning us, the Tuskegee Airmen, didn’t nd out about this magazine until 1995.”
It was only by chance Harvey’s group commander stumbled across an almanac and noticed the winner of the 1949 U.S. Air Force Weapons Meet was “unknown.”
e almanac was corrected in April 1995 to show the 332nd Fighter Group as the o cial winners of the 1949 weapons meet.
ough the records were xed, one more mystery would remain.

With storm clouds on the horizon and rain falling all around the Denver area Friday evening, Goldenites looking to enjoy a night of music, dancing and animated storytelling made a wish that the storm would pass them by so the show could go on.
And their wish was granted.
On July 7, the City of Golden kicked o its summertime Movies & Music in the Park series with amenco performers followed by “Puss in Boots: e Last Wish.” World-renowned guitarist René Heredia — of the René Heredia Flamenco Center for Guitar and Dance — led the performers in songs and dances from all over Spain and beyond.
Heredia also explained some of the history behind amenco, which has elements from multiple cultures found in Spain — Arabic, Jewish, Romani and others. e songs and dances they performed spanned
from Galicia in northwest Spain to Andalusia in the south; and took elements from bull ghting, religious processions, Caribbean rhythms and more.
Dancer Diane Lapierre, who’s been performing with Heredia for 25 years, said that the beautiful mix of cultures was one of the things that drew her to study amenco dancing.
She loves the costumes and rhythms, emphasizing how the dancers create the rhythm with their feet. When done properly, she said, there’s a nice back-and-forth between the musicians and the dancers, as they feed o each other.
“Anybody can nd a piece of themselves in it,” Lapierre said of studying amenco.
Singer and guitarist Andréana Cortés, who’s also Heredia’s niece, grew up studying amenco with her family in California. Now, she teaches dance and guitar as she recently founded the Colorado Institute of Flamenco.
Heredia originally came to Colorado for a few weeks to perform, but decided to stay when he saw how there was a need to share amenco here, Cortés said. She has the same drive to share and preserve amenco as an art form, saying, “We must preserve it for the next generations.”
Both Cortés and Lapierre emphasized how lucky Denver is to have a world-renowned amenco master like Heredia in the area, and hoped performances like the July 7 one would inspire people to learn amenco guitar, singing and dancing.
During the event, Movies & Music in the Park attendees scoped out dinner and/or dessert from the local vendors and bundled up for the movie. With temperatures in the low 60s and the sky sending down the occasional drizzle, many were prepared with umbrellas, rain jackets and heavy sweaters.
“Puss in Boots: e Last Wish” depicts everyone’s favorite fearless hero taking on his greatest challenge yet. With death knocking at his door — and that’s not meant metaphorically, rhetorically, poetically or theoretically — Puss seeks out the titular Last Wish, contending with both friend and foe along the way.
is iteration of the fairy tale feline takes inspiration from Spanish actor Antonio Banderas — who’s voiced Puss for almost 20 years — and his previous role as Zorro. e legendary cat enjoys singing, dancing and playing guitar for his adoring fans, and Lapierre said there’s “ avors of amenco” in his performances.
All in all, Lapierre, Heredia and the other performers were simply happy the rain held o for the July 7 event.
“I think everyone had a nice time,” Heredia continued.
e series will continue Aug. 4 with blankslate followed by “Disney’s e Strange World.” e nale will be Sept. 1 with Ghost Town Drifters, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” and the city’s reworks display rescheduled from the Fourth of July.

Booms criss-cross a small creek along Kerr Gulch Road near Kittredge on July 10 after a tanker carrying 8,300 gallons of fuel overturned on July 6. e booms absorb any fuel that spilled into the creek.
e driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and it is not known how much fuel leaked out, though it doesn’t appear to be extensive, according to Evergreen Fire/Rescue.
Crews from Evergreen Fire/Rescue and West Metro Fire with help from the Evergreen Metro District and Denver Water were on scene all night on July 6, emptying the tanker. A tow truck uprighted the truck on July 7, and it took time to turn the semi around so it could be towed northbound on Kerr Gulch Road to Evergreen Parkway.
Stacee Martin, an EFR spokeswoman, said the semi was traveling southbound on Kerr Gulch Road

and overturned into a ditch near High Road and South Piney Ridge Road. The truck driver indicated he had moved the truck to the shoulder to allow a car to pass, and the soft shoulder gave way, rolling the truck. It landed in a gulley with a nearby small temporary creek that currently has water flowing there.
An environmental team provided by Offen Petroleum put booms near the crash site and further below the site, said Martin, who observed that the booms near the crash had turned brown on July 7, showing they were picking up the fuel, and the booms further below remained white.
The Canyon Courier reached out to Offen Petroleum for more information, but the company has not yet responded.
Evergreen Fire/Rescue received the call at 7:56 p.m. July 6, and it immediately contacted West Metro Fire, which has an expert hazardous materials team, to help at the scene, Martin said. The fuel spill came from a saddle tank, not the main tank, but crews emptied all five compartments, she said.
“This is not a normal call for us, and we hit the button to get the cavalry going,” Martin said. “We worked together as a team.”
The West Metro hazardous materials team drilled holes into each compartment, sucked the fuel out of the tanks and then plugged the holes so nothing would leak out once the truck was upright, she said. Evergreen Fire/Rescue had fire trucks and firefighters on scene in case sparks from the drill caused a fire. The fuel was offloaded into another tanker.
“It was a slow process,” she said. “They grounded the equipment and the tanker to make sure there
were no sparks, but we were ready just in case.”
Martin said she didn’t know why the truck driver was traveling down Kerr Gulch Road, which is steep and winding near Kittredge.
According to Evergreen Fire/ Rescue, Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash.
Martin added that the incident
was a great opportunity for Evergreen firefighters to work with the West Metro team.
“The good news is nobody got hurt, and it was a great team effort,” she added.
She also thanked neighbors who were very forgiving of the lights, noise and blocked road all night and into the morning.
At the height of the pandemic in 2020, Denver-based radio personality Mercedes Howard was pregnant with her rst child. She was living in Denver, but most of her family was in California where she grew up.
Like many people around the world during quarantine, Howard found the experience isolating and lonely. On top of the uncertainness that came with the COVID-19 pandemic, Howard was trying to maneuver her rst pregnancy journey without a support system and was feeling scared about the future. erefore, she often turned to TikTok and Google for pregnancy and parenting advice. She found that many pregnant millennial women her age were going through the same struggle. is sparked the idea for Howard to begin a podcast that focuses on millennial moms of color.
“Many millennial mothers I have met are the rst in their inner circle to actually have a child, and their relationships with close friends has now become distant, leaving them to feel more alone,” said Howard. “Other
moms I know are struggling with the internal feeling of not being able to provide in the current economy — some being single and having to do a balancing act with parenting, work and sometimes school. In my opinion, the pressure that I have seen in this generation for moms has essentially increased by thousands.”
e Black Millennial Mom Podcast promotes discussion about parenting, pregnancy and millennial BIPOC moms.
“When we create spaces where moms in BIPOC communities share their experiences and assist each other
along the way, we nurture greater access to valuable tools and support systems that bene t so many parents and caregivers across Colorado,” said Wendy Allen, manager of Rocky Mountain PBS Kids, in a news release.
Howard wanted to bring her personal Black experience to the podcasting world. So instead of creating just another mommy-centric podcast, she wanted to create a space for BIPOC women to have safe, informative discussions on issues that are prevalent in the community.
“I think it’s important to have Black representation in podcasting be-
cause it opens the doors and provides resources to my community that often can behard to obtain. Black reparation in the mommy sphere, especially in Colorado, is essential,” said Howard.
“Being able to join forces with Rocky Mountain PBS Kids not only showcases the diversity but opens the doors for women like myself to have outlets and resources they might not have been able to nd before this.”
e podcast just wrapped up its rst season and was a roaring success. Currently, listeners can nd the podcast on YouTube, Google Play, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and the Rocky Mountain PBS Kids website.
Howard expects season two of e Black Millennial Mom Podcast will have deeper conversations and cover more topics. Howard and her team have been working to add more music artists to their lineup of podcast guests. Listeners will also hear from more resources in the parenting atmosphere here in Colorado, including therapists and daycare representatives.
“ e reaction behind ( e Black Millennial Mom Podcast) has exceeded my expectations,” said Howard. “Women from all over have reached out and given encouraging thoughts and love to me. e conversation about parenting has truly opened my eyes on how everyone’s journey truly does not look the same.”
As a young boy, Osi Sladek lived a relatively carefree life with his Jewish family in present-day Slovakia. But after the Nazis came to power and occupied his country, his world fell apart.
Now 87, Sladek spoke recently in Aurora about his and his parents’ experience surviving the Holocaust, which included being smuggled back and forth across the Hungarian border and eeing into the mountains with the Partisans.
Along with telling his story, Sladek spoke passionately about the importance of standing up for democracy and emphasized that it’s not something that can be taken for granted.
A longtime musician and performer, Sladek moved to Israel with his family after the war before coming to the U.S. in the 1950s, which he described as “the rst time I felt like I really felt free.” “ ere’s no better place than the United States of America, no one can convince me,” he said to applause.
Sladek has been speaking about his experience for many years, and last
year he also published a memoir, titled Escape to the Tatras: A Boy, A War and a Life Interrupted. Before the event he donated a copy to the Aurora Public Library, which will be available to readers.
e event was a partnership between the City of Aurora’s O ce of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Mizel Museum in Denver. More than 100 people attended the event in person at Aurora’s city council chamber, with more watching on a livestream.
Aurora Mayor Mike Co man and Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky introduced Sladek. Co man described the Holocaust as “among the most horri c events in human history” and said it’s important to remember those who were lost.
“Programs like these serve as a stark reminder of the importance of standing up to hatred and injustice,” Co man said, which he said is especially important for a city as diverse as Aurora.
Jurinsky, who is Jewish, said that Sladek’s story speaks to the importance of standing up to antisemitism and reminded her of the value of living
“in a free nation.”
“One day we will have no survivors left and we must continue to teach the horrors of the Holocaust to the younger generation,” she said.
e event began with the viewing of a prerecorded talk from Sladek where he discussed his family’s life before and during WWII in the city of Prešov. Prior to the rise of Hitler Sladek said that Czechoslovakia was a good place for Jews to live, but that antisemitic propaganda turned people against his community and persisted after the war.
“It’s not so easy to get rid of brainwashing,” he said.
After the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, Jewish people in his town began to be rounded up and deported to concentration camps. A Christian judge who was a friend of the family helped warn them of when raids were coming, but Sladek’s family decided to smuggle him across the border to Hungary to live with a relative. His mother told him that he had to pretend to be an orphan if he wanted to survive.
Sladek lived in Hungary for a year, but it was then also occupied by the Nazis, and his parents decided to bring him back. He was smuggled back across the border inside a hay wagon, and said at one point at a checkpoint
Nazi soldiers stabbed their bayonets into the hay barrels, almost catching him.
His family ultimately escaped into the Tatra mountains with a group of other civilians following the Partisan ghters, who’s bravery and courage Sladek said he remembers with fondness. at’s where they were when the war ended in 1945.
Despite everything he went through, including losing all of his cousins and many other family members in the Holocaust, Sladek said he rejected bitterness and still chose to trust in other people.
“I don’t know how to hate,” he said. “I went through all those things, all those di cult times, but I guess God didn’t give me that special ability to hate. I love people.”
After the video, Sladek answered questions from the audience. His natural humor and charm shone through despite the dark subject matter, and he drew laughs on a number of occasions. One man said that Sladek had been his teacher at a Denver synagogue 57 years ago.
“I probably did the right thing by you, right? If I was a nasty teacher you wouldn’t be here today,” he joked.
Sladek said watching his country slide into fascism as a child made him passionate about the importance of
safeguarding democracy, something he always emphasizes when speaking to groups of young people.
“Even though we live in a democracy, there’s no guarantee that next week we are still going to be in a democracy,” he said.
He said he’s also concerned by a rise in antisemitism, which is something he said he never expected to have to be worried about in the U.S. However, he said he feels very safe in this country in part because unlike Slovakia, where Jews were one of the only minority groups, the U.S. is a diverse nation.
“If society decides to persecute a certain segment, we are all a victim of that,” he said.
e fact that a room full of people from various backgrounds were all sitting together and listening to him share his story is an example of the way things should be, he said. He encouraged the audience to stand up to displays of bigotry.
“We are people who love other people and we believe in a society that is made up of all kinds of people,” he said. “ at’s what I believe in.”
is Aurora Sentinel story via e Associated Press’ Storyshare, of which Colorado Community Media is a member.
There are a lot of events around that try to entice people to attend by billing themselves as the biggest, the most exciting, the wildest or craziest event in the history of…Well, the history of events, I guess. Ones that draw more people than the gladiators at the Roman Coliseum ever did.
But one event around here likes to take the opposite approach and bills itself as “ e best laid-back event in Golden.” at’s kind of refreshing to see for a change.
It’s an ongoing event on the last Tuesday evening of every month while the weather is warm and totally family-friendly. It’s simply called the Golden Bike Cruise.
Now with that kind of name around here, it’s going to need a little more explanation than its title might suggest. First o , they mean bicycles, not motorcycles. Yes, we have an overabundance of both kinds of bikes in Golden.
Second, it’s a di erent kind of cruise than the Super Cruise we have for cars. is one is an actual group bicycle ride around town, not an exhibition of custom or vintage bikes.
AVENUE FLASHESNobody’s going to be setting up lawn chairs to watch the cool bikes cruise up and down the streets.
And third, it’s just a chill social bike ride along the streets and bike paths around Golden, not some epic endurance ride up the side of Lookout Mountain for people dreaming about competing in the Olympics.
So, here’s what the Golden Bike Cruise actually is. Basically, it’s a group ride with a di erent fun theme every month. e events run from May through September, and as I mentioned above, happen on the last Tuesday evening of those months, so we have a few more coming up this year. e next one is on Tuesday, July 25.
Everyone meets on the upper deck of the Calvary Church parking garage, located at 818 14th St., right behind the Golden Armory Building. e riding portion is a simple loop up to the New
Loveland Mine Park and back along the streets and bike trails of Golden.
ey set up beer and food booths, in conjunction with New Terrain Brewing and Bob’s Atomic Burgers and have a local Golden band there to provide live music.
e night’s schedule is the doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the kegs are tapped. Cruise from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. then a kids ra e at 7:45 p.m. after the ride. e adult ra e happens at 8:45 p.m. and the music ends at 9 p.m.
Since the rides are themed, all riders are encouraged to wear costumes and decorate their bikes. 100-150 riders of all ages usually participate. July 25’s theme is Tropical Paradise, so break out those Hawaiian shirts and baggy shorts or some kind of beach wear.
It’s free to ride and participate, but this is actually a fundraising event sponsored by Golden Community Commons, a non-pro t organization envisioning the future of the historic Armory building. e organization doesn’t make money o the ride itself, it just raises funds from the beer sales. Plus, there are a lot of local business in Golden sponsoring the event with things like prize donations for the
ra e. So, how do you get tickets for the ra es? For kids, there are four ways to get a ra e ticket. Just by showing up, by wearing a costume, by bringing canned goods for a local food pantry or by purchasing food. For adults, there is only one way to get ra e tickets — just buy beer!
So, if this sounds like a fun night for you and your friends or families, I’m giving you a little advanced notice so you have time to organize your own little group, nd something fun to wear and make some plans for a unique Tuesday night get-together. You can also tune up and decorate your bike if you need to.
If you need more information, visit goldenbikecruise.com. ere is a route map on there and you can check out what the themes are going to be for the other upcoming rides as well. I’ll give you a couple of hints. Back to school and zombies. Zombies? Hmmm…I know a few people that may not even need a special costume for that one.

It has been a wet, wet, wet spring here in Denver. I moved here in 2017 and I have not experienced such a verdant spring since arriving. As such, I’ve already been getting more than my fair share of mushroom inquiries. Recently, I’ve answered questions from a concerned dog owner who passed along pictures of a Stropharia mushroom, and some primordial birds nest fungi, growing in the wet mulch of a local dog run. Apart from telling him to pick and toss the mushrooms and enjoy the birds nest fungi, there’s not much else that can be done other than monitor what your four-legged furry child sticks in its mouth.
But this got me thinking, what have people been seeing in this wet, wet, wet spring? To nd out,

I decided to jump onto iNaturalist and see what others around Denver have put on the app since June 1. What sort of surprises me are the lack of Agaricus barnardii observations on iNaturalist. It’s surprising because they’re so abundant in Denver’s parks that they’re almost a weed. However, they’re easy to identify because they look like a fat portobella mushroom, but smell kind of like the ocean. Another species that people didn’t put on iNaturalist in early is Coprinellus micaceous. is is truly a weedy mushroom species because when it’s wet, you always see it fruiting in large “inky” bouquets at the base of trees and tree stumps. One of our most common wood eaters, it is mushrooms like this that return stumps back to the soil.

May 29, 1931 - June 15, 2023
Betty (Klein) Payte, 92, of Golden, Colorado, passed away peacefully on ursday, June 15.
Betty was born May 29, 1931, in Dallas, Texas, to William and Winnifred Klein. e family moved to Mobridge, South Dakota, and at the age of eleven Betty moved to Colorado with them, where she lived for the rest of her life.
Betty went to Wheat Ridge High School but dropped out with one credit remaining, to marry Harold in 1948. When she was thirty years old, she went back to school to earn her diploma in a classroom of teenagers. It was then she discovered her great love for learning, driven by her eternal curiosity about everything and everyone, which never waned. Over the years, she started many businesses on her own and with Harold, including ownership and management of Dairy Queens in Arvada, Wheat Ridge, Northglenn and Commerce City, Colorado.
Betty and Harold went on to have two children: Patty Dierks and Amy Clark.
In retirement, Betty kept busy with her numerous passions, including racewalking, bike touring, ying, volunteering with various organizations, and leading walk groups in Golden. Her love of community earned both her and Harold the Mayor’s Award of Golden in 2016 “for serving as inspiring role models
and ambassadors for healthy living and walking in Golden.” is colorful life, started from humble beginnings and lled with such diverse life experiences, inspired Betty’s friends, and family to convince her to write her memoir. In 2019, at the age of 89, she released Always Betty: One Woman’s Romp rough Life with Grit, Wit, and Wisdom.
She is survived by her husband of 74 years, Harold, daughter Amy (Jim) Clark, granddaughters Jamie (Kenny Lee) Clark and Kellie Clark, grandsons Aaron Dierks and Matthew Dierks, and sister Nancy Blair. Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Patty Dierks, her grandson, Eric Hans Dierks, and her brother Bill Klein.
Betty’s love of walking had more to do with the organic bonding of strangers into friends and brought to life her de ning quote, “Walk beside me and be my friend.”
In her honor, Walk Beside Me: Celebrating the Life and Stories of Betty Payte, will be held Sunday, July 16, at 10am at New Loveland Mine Park in Golden.
In lieu of owers, please consider a donation in Betty’s name to the Flatirons Chamber Music Festival: Crossing the Divide, www.FlatIronsCMF.org
Several years ago, someone walking into Barbara Pontarelli’s home for the rst time may have gotten the feeling that they’d become a giant.
Hanging on the walls of her kitchen, small scenes exhibited the culinary décor of di erent eras. In one display box, tiny countertops of a retro 1950s kitchen popped with color. In another, little stainless steel appliances lled the space.
Miniature tables and chairs were laid out in parlor scenes in the house’s living room, and Pontarelli’s bathrooms were dentist-themed. Since her husband was a dentist, she honored his career with small recliners and minuscule toothbrushes on display.
“When I didn’t have enough space to display stu , I would empty closets,” said the Wheat Ridge resident, who now lives part-time in California.
Of the countless miniature scenes on display in her home, Pontarelli collected about a quarter of them.
e rest, she made herself.
“It’s, you know, how I express my artistic side,” she said. “I can’t explain the draw, but it’s de nitely a passion … I just nd this so satisfying — to produce something small to be as close as it can be to its full-size counterpart.”
Pontarelli is part of a passionate community of miniaturists, or people who enjoy the art, hobby or collection of miniature objects.
In the metro Denver area, it doesn’t take a magnifying glass to see that the miniaturist community is thriving — from meetup groups to classes, to a museum, the love of tiny things is big in the hearts of many.
Pontarelli is a board member at the institution at the epicenter of the Denver metro miniaturist community: the Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys. In addition to its miniature collection, the museum displays and teaches visitors about antique toys and special dolls from over the decades.
e museum recently moved to 830 Kipling St. in Lakewood after spending almost 40 years in Denver’s City Park West neighborhood.
In its new location, Executive Director Wendy Littlepage said the museum welcomes about 5,000 visitors per year,
“( e museum) is so many di erent things to di erent people,” she said. “We have people that come in that love just the exactitude of the small scale, and then we have people that love the
whimsy of the small scale. We have a lot of people that come for nostalgia … And then I think some people just like that it’s a bit of a mental break.”
One of her favorite things about miniatures is that they are for everyone. Some people come into the museum thinking that the collection, which includes several intricate dollhouses and other cases of miniature objects and artwork, is mainly for kids.
But the houses are full of detailed — and sometimes even functional — replicas of what one would see in a normal house, including cupboards, dressers, paintings, beds, sinks, animals and food.
Considering the familiarity and intricacies of the pieces, Littlepage said some of the collection’s biggest fans tend to be craftsmen.
“We had a nish carpenter come through, and he just said over and over, ‘ is is all insane! How did they get that nish?’” she said. “ ere’s one house where the plumbing is really exposed – and it’s not functional plumbing – but we had a plumber come through and he was just like, ‘ at’s what every house needs.’”
In one display case, tiny handmade food is almost microscopically detailed — including an orange that can be peeled to show the segments underneath and an onion with all of its layers. Other displays show miniature artwork by Indigenous artists that represent Indigenous homes.
For many miniature items, artists use the materials that the regular-sized objects would be made of, like wood and fabric. Paintings are painted, embroidered things are embroidered and knit clothing is knit with small thread.
But for other mini details, artists get more creative, using paper to make owers and polymer clay to construct food items.
While many miniatures are created by hobbyists and artisan creators, others are mass-produced. Just like with real furniture, Wendy said, collectors will determine which types to buy based on their speci c needs.
High-end artisan miniature pieces can sell for thousands of dollars, Littlepage said. e miniature art gallery in the museum was appraised at $18,000 about 15 years ago, so it’s likely worth even more now, she added.
Crafting classes
For those who like to make miniatures, there are clubs and classes to teach di erent skills. For a long time, Pontarelli was the president of one of these clubs, called Wee Wonders of Arvada.
e longstanding miniature group meets monthly at the museum to work on projects together or teach and learn new skills from each other, like how to make stained glass windows or create stucco.
“We have people at every level,” Pontarelli said. “I love getting together with these people and hearing what they’ve gured out and what they’re doing and always learning something new.”
In addition to crafting by hand, miniaturists also use new tools and technologies to create their artwork.
“I’ve noticed a change in the level of expertise over the years,” Pontarelli said. “Before, we used mini scroll saws and mini table saws and Dremel tools — we still use the Dremel quite a bit — but now that we can get laser-cut wood or 3D-printed items, it’s sort of changing the face of the miniature world.”
e museum also hosts classes for kids.
“ ere’s a whole in ux of young people into the hobby and for those of us who are in it, that’s kind of exciting, because, you know, we don’t want to
see it disappear,” Pontarelli said.
For her, miniatures are a great way for kids to explore their creativity.
“We’re just trying to nd any avenue to trigger their creativity, that’s really what it’s all about,” she said. “In this tech world, we need to foster any outside creativity activities that we can, because it’s really important that these kids exercise that part of their brain.”
To learn and wonder e dedication and ambition within the community of miniaturists is special, Littlepage said.
“My favorite thing about the miniature community is they’re such learners,” she said. “Like I have one of my volunteers who has been retired for a while … and she bought a laser cutter and has taught herself to program it.”
She said that problem-solving attitude, plus the childlike wonder of enjoying cute things, make miniaturists special.
Littlepage encouraged people to take a break from their busy lives to check out the museum, where tickets for adults are $5 and children and seniors are $4.
“It’s a great space because you have to slow down,” she said. “You come in fast, you miss a lot. So being able to come in, take a few breaths and just sort of nd the most ridiculous tiny thing you can nd.”
For those who have their interest piqued in the world of miniatures, Pontarelli said it’s never too late to start. Creating and collecting can be for anyone at any time and any age, she said.
And for those who don’t know where to begin, just remember — it’s OK to start small.
Colorado is changing how it punishes people for car theft, and will focus on the behavior of the o ender instead of the value of the vehicle.
A new state law that took e ect July 1 will bring harsher penalties for people who repeatedly steal cars, or use them to commit other crimes.
For repeat o enders — those who have been convicted of car theft at least twice before — prosecutors can now charge them with a Class 3 felony, punishable by between four and 12 years in prison. People who steal a car and damage it, take it out of state or use it to commit another crime, will face between two to six years in prison.
e law does allow for a lower penalty for joyriders, people who steal cars brie y and commit no other crimes with them.
“We heard a lot of concerns of: What if it’s less than 24 hours? What if it’s returned undamaged?” said GOP state Rep. Matt Soper, explaining why they kept the ability for prosecutors to treat some car thefts
as a misdemeanor.
e bipartisan law was a response to criticism that Colorado’s previous approach to car theft was ine ectual and unfair.
Under the prior law, the severity of the crime was based on the value of the vehicle. Stealing a car worth less than $2,000 was generally only a misdemeanor. Democratic state Sen. Rachel Zenzinger said it was clear that approach ignored the actual impact on victims.
“A crime is a crime,” said Zenzinger. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a moderate income person, a low income person — if your car has been stolen, it’s going to impact your life, and sometimes pretty dramatically.”

Colorado has earned a place of infamy for car thefts in recent years.
e business-oriented think tank Common Sense Institute found that Colorado led the nation in car thefts in 2021 and averaged around 4,000 thefts a month for the rst half of 2022. Car thefts have declined since then, according to Colorado State Patrol, which trumpeted the new law as a help to future enforcement.
Zenzinger and other lawmakers said they got involved in the issue after hearing from numerous constituents across the state about their own experiences with auto thefts and asking for stricter penalties.
“I was receiving emails about this almost daily,” she said. “Even my
own vehicle, while it was not stolen, it was broken into. And I think when you become a victim of a crime like that, it really sends it home. When you realize, ‘it can happen to anybody. And it is happening!’”
e bill was supported unanimously in the state Senate but opposed by a handful of House Democrats, concerned that strengthening penalties could lead to more people with felonies on their criminal records without meaningfully reducing car thefts. ey argued addressing the root causes of crime would have more impact.
“It’s a false set of options to suggest folks are asking for more criminalization, when we’re not giving them other options,” said Rep. Elisabeth Epps during a committee hearing on the bill. “ is is a step in the wrong direction, and it’s a step that we’re going to be paying for for years to come.”
e new law was developed by the state’s Criminal and Juvenile Justice Coalition and supported by a number of local governments and law enforcement organizations. It was opposed by the ACLU and criminal defense lawyers.

Two Democratic state representatives are suing their own caucus, including House Speaker Julie McCluskie and House Majority Leader Monica Duran, alleging “pervasive” violations of Colorado’s open meetings laws.
e 13-page legal action, a rare intraparty spat spilling into public view and the courts, was led in Denver District Court on Friday by Democratic Reps. Elisabeth Epps of Denver and Bob Marshall of Highlands Ranch.
It alleges Colorado House Democrats’ nearweekly caucus meetings, during which pending legislation is discussed, should be publicly noticed and that meeting minutes be recorded and o ered to the public. e lawsuit alleges members of the House Democratic caucus “directed legislative aides to omit or disguise these mandatory meetings from representatives’ calendars.”
e lawsuit also argues that House Democrats’ use of Signal, an encrypted smartphone messaging system in which messages can be automatically deleted, also violates the state’s open meeting and public records laws. According to the legal action, representatives used Signal to discuss witness testimony and how each lawmaker would vote on bills.
Epps and Marshall, both lawyers, say they brought their concerns about the potential open meetings and public records violations to McCluskie, D-Dillon, and the legislature’s nonpartisan O ce of Legislative Legal Services.
“Despite plainti s’ best e orts, ultimately House leadership failed to act and defendants continued to violate COML,” the o ce said. McCluskie and Duran, D-Wheat Ridge, responded in a written statement.
“House Democratic leadership is committed to open and transparent government and ensuring a fair and public process for policy making,” the statement said. “We are still reviewing the complaint in full, and we stand by our caucus — dedicated public servants who work tirelessly on behalf of their constituents.”
Marshall, reached by e Colorado Sun, said he would provide comment in a pending statement. Epps didn’t immediately return a voicemail and text message seeking comment.
“Quorums of state public bodies in the House of Representatives routinely meet in secret to discuss public business,” the lawsuit said. “ ese discussions inform the course of legislative action to be later taken publicly and are routinely conducted outside of public view, without providing public notice, and without recording or publishing meeting minutes that the public can access.”
Epps and Marshall are also suing House Minority Leader Mike Lynch, the top Republican in the House, and the entire House GOP caucus, alleging they, too, violate open meetings laws by holding regular caucus meetings and through their communications on Signal.
A spokesman for Lynch and the House GOP caucus also didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
e entire Colorado House of Representatives is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit. Democrats have a 46-19 supermajority in the chamber.
e lawsuit asks a judge to declare that the unannounced caucus meetings constitute a violation of Colorado’s open meetings law and to enter an order barring them from holding private meetings between two or more House members to discuss public business. When such meetings occur, there should be minutes made available to the public, the legal action requests.
Epps and Marshall are also asking that their attorneys fees be paid by the defendants in the case. e lawsuit argues Colorado’s open meetings laws required that any gathering of two or more members of an elected state body must make their gatherings public if they are discussing public business. It also says any meeting of a state public body at which a quorum is expected to be in attendance can happen only after the public is

piston-engine division, Harvey and his team were brought into a hotel ballroom where the almost 3-foottall stainless steel victory cup sat on a table. at was in 1949.
ey had a photo made with the trophy and it was the last day any of them would see it until more than half a century later.
In 1999, Zellie Rainey-Orr got involved with the Tuskegee Airmen as the result of a Tuskegee Airman pilot from her Mississippi hometown who died in combat — 1st Lt. Quitman Walker.
Rainey-Orr confesses, until that day, she never knew much about the Tuskegee Airmen.
She was about to get a rsthand lesson from the men who were there.
“I thought I was just gonna go and put a ower on the grave of Quitman Walker,” she said. “I assumed he was buried here in Indianola, Mississippi and that’s when I would learn that no one knew where he was buried.”
Rainey-Orr reached out to the Walker family in an attempt to help locate the airman’s remains.
rough her quest to help, she would eventually meet Alva Temple, the captain of the 1949 “Top Gun” team at a 2004 event to award Walker’s medals posthumously, at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi.
It was there that she learned of the missing trophy.
“I just felt a connection,” RaineyOrr said.
Unable to resist, she began a quest to locate it.
Not knowing what the trophy looked like, and with Temple, at that time, in failing health, she reached out to the family in hopes of nding more details.
Someone in Temple’s family mentioned that there was a newspaper story covering the event, dated May 12, 1949, on a bedroom dresser. at clipping provided RaineyOrr with enough information to start contacting military bases and museums.
Within a week, she received a response from the National Museum of the United States Air Force, in Dayton, Ohio.
“ ey said they had the trophy and attached a photo,” she said.
Rainey-Orr called Temple’s family on Sunday, Aug. 29 to share the good news, but was told Temple had passed the day before.
“It was almost like his spirit guided me,” she said. “I didn’t know the story or the impact. I was just looking for a trophy.”
Oddly, while it took Rainey-Orr less than a week to locate a trophy that had been missing for more than 50 years, it would take her much longer to get the U.S. Air Force to agree to bring it out of mothballs.
“I was talking to the historian at the Air Force Museum, the one who sent the photo, and I said I’d love to come see it,” she recalled. “And he (the historian) said, ‘It’s not on display — and it will never be on display.’”
Rainey-Orr was confused.
She thought that this was an important piece of Air Force history, it was the rst nationwide gunnery competition since the end of the war and it was the rst time that Black pilots had participated.
Why wouldn’t they want the trophy displayed?
After a lot of back-and-forth negotiations, the Air Force agreed to let the trophy be shown.
In December of the same year, Air Force Museum representatives took the trophy out of storage and delivered it to Detroit, Michigan, the home of another Tuskegee Top Gun, Harry Stewart, for its rst unveiling at the National Museum of the Tuskegee Airmen’s annual banquet.
After the banquet, the trophy was returned to the museum where it went on permanent display in early 2006.
Harvey was unable to attend the 2004 banquet in Detroit, but Rainey-Orr, who is now an author and Tuskegee Airman historian, prompted him to make the journey to Ohio in 2006.
When asked how he felt upon seeing the trophy on display, Harvey smiled and said, “Feels good. Feels
very good — very, very good. Mission accomplished.”
Harvey plans to celebrate his 100th birthday with true ghter pilot air.
He says close to 270 friends, family and guests from around the country, many of them “military brass,” will join him for a private gala celebration in Centennial, Colorado. ere will be three birthday cakes, one fashioned into the shape of a Corvair F-102 Delta Dagger — “made of gluten-free marble and cappuccino,” of course.
What does one hope for after blowing out all of those candles?
“Continued good health,” he said. “Continued excellent health.”
And what does 100 years feel like?
Harvey will tell you.
“It doesn’t feel any di erent than the rst year,” he joked. “ Actually, I don’t remember the rst year, but I do remember the second — that’s when I got measles.”
His secret to longevity?
“I try to be a nice person to everybody — until they prove otherwise,”
he said. “Just be nice to people. My motto has always been, ‘Do unto others as you have them do unto you.’ I live by that one and it works.” Rainey-Orr agrees, and describes Harvey, whom she rst met in 2005 as “caring and compassionate.”
“I just like to say he is a real example of what we sow, we get to reap,” she said. “He is a rst in many areas, including becoming the rst Black pilot to y jets in Korea — and often unless he told the stories, they were forgotten.”
While saddened that she’ll miss Harvey’s birthday bash, Rainey-Orr is happy for her friend.
“I’m just so happy he got to live long enough to see the day, and to understand that people really do appreciate his sacri ces in the service of our country,” she said, “because he had comrades who did not. ey survived the war, but didn’t get to see the respect.”
But the big question is, what does the rst “Top Gun” think of the new “Top Gun: Maverick” movie?
“I liked the rst one better,” Harvey said.
given full and timely notice.
Finally, the laws say the minutes of any meeting of a state public body shall be recorded and made available to the public.
Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate regularly hold closed-door caucus meetings that the public isn’t informed of beforehand. at’s been a yearslong practice at the Capitol.
Lawmakers’ use of Signal, which was rst released in 2014, has become more widespread over the past two or three years.
Marshall and Epps just nished their rst year at the Capitol after being elected in November 2022. Epps repeatedly clashed with House Democratic leadership during the 2023 legislative session, speci cally McCluskie, with the tensions aring on the nal day of the lawmaking term during a House Democratic caucus meeting.
In an impassioned speech to the rest of her caucus, Epps directly criticized McCluskie’s leadership, saying she had been too lenient with Republicans and had allowed lastminute bills to be forced through by Democrats.
“You asked to do this,” Epps said. “I’m asking you to do much, much more.”
Marshall has a history of bringing open meetings lawsuits. He sued the Douglas County School Board in 2022 over the ring of its superintendent when a conservative majority took over the board, arguing there had been illegal secret meetings over the decision.
A judge agreed that the four new board members held “daisy chain,” or one-on-one meetings, in advance of the ring in violation of public meetings laws.
Steve Zansberg, a well-known Colorado media attorney, led the lawsuit on behalf of Epps and Marshall. He also represented Marshall in the Douglas County lawsuit. Zansberg also represents e Sun and the Colorado Freedom of Infor-

In April, Marshall asked the Legislative Council, a committee of legislative leaders, to create an interim committee on Colorado’s open meetings laws and how they apply to the legislature, including emails and electronic communications.
“ is request comes out of concern that the legislature’s become very sloppy with the Open Meeting Law and Colorado Open Records Act,” Marshall told the committee. “We work for the people and if the people want to see what we’re doing, they put a referendum in place to know what’s going on.”
e council never voted on Marshall’s proposal, e ectively rejecting it.
Senate President Steve Fenberg, D-Boulder, told Marshall that the issue should be addressed in a bill in the future.
“I think the open records laws and open meetings laws are very confusing,” Fenberg said. “And, oftentimes, I think folks don’t know how to actually comply, especially in the modern day. So I do think this is an area
education.
Now, The Colorado Sun co-owns this and other Colorado Community Media newspapers as a partner in the Colorado News Conservancy. The Sun is CCM’s partner for
that the legislature needs to discuss.” en, on the nal day of the legislature’s 2023 session, Marshall said he intended to take action on what he called “hypocritical” violations of sunshine laws by his fellow lawmakers.
“It was 10 times worse than anything the Douglas County School Board had been doing,” he said.
He said the lawmakers had a “holier than thou” mentality, criticizing other branches of government for a lack of transparency while not looking at themselves.
“ at’s a hypocrisy that’s very difcult for me to bear,” he said.
No hearings on the lawsuit brought by Epps and Marshall had been scheduled as of earlier this week.

For those student athletes, coaches, administrators and others that have proven consistent greatness, sportsmanship and dedication, their chance at being enshrined in history is now.
e Colorado High School Activities Association, or CHSAA, is accepting nominations for its 2023 Hall of Fame class through Aug. 15.
Candidates can be nominated in any of the following categories:
Student participants
cials
Coach/sponsors Administrators Signi cant contributors
Generally, between ve and 10 inductees are added every year across all the categories.
Rashaan Davis, the assistant commissioner of CHSAA, walked me through the quali cations and nomination requirements.
“To be inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame, nominees are screened
through our selection committee,” Davis said. “ e process for nomination does not require any more than to be nominated.”
Anyone can make a nomination –from a coach to a player to a parent.
After a person is nominated, the selection committee surveys them on an individual basis, weighing di erent factors based on category and contribution like time contributed, accolades earned, and more. However, there are no prerequisites, Davis said. ere is no singular measure of success, either.
“ e criteria do change for each category, as it has a direct correlation in what de nes excellence in that category,” Davis said. “For example, it might be overall championship wins or appearances in title games for coaches. Whereas for student participants, it might be records set, times achieved, number of victories over their four-year career.”
Classi cation and gender of sport are also factored in as they relate to particular accomplishments and accolades, Davis said.
at way, each nominee is measured against peers at their same
level, rather than everyone competing against everyone for the same honors.
It’s a long and tedious process, but one that Davis said is fair and about striking the right balance.
“We always look to balance induction as we look at accomplishments, schools, classi cations, athletics versus activities, geography, and so many other factors,” Davis said. “As you know, we oversee more than 30 sports and activities. So between coaches, o cials, student participants, administrators, and signi cant contributors, this is not an easy process.”
If you or someone you know might have a nominee in mind, get those nominations in using the submission form on CHSAAnow.com e site also features a full list of all the previous CHSAA Hall of Fame inductees dating back to 1989. ere are currently 222 hall of fame members.
Recent members in the Colorado Community Media coverage area include wrestling coaching legend Tim Ottman of Ponderosa High School in Parker (2022), two-time basketball state champion Ann Strother Abromaitis of Highlands Ranch High School (2022), and 1999 Miss Colora-

For football rans, rest easy. e season is right around the corner.
e annual 7-on-7 football tournament at Dakota Ridge High School featured several teams battling it out to ramp up for the impending season. e competition revolves around drills and plays between both teams on o ense and defense. ere are no pads and contact is limited to two-hand-touch.
Ralston Valley, Columbine, Dakota Ridge, Golden, Evergreen, Fairview, Pomona and Green Mountain all participated.
Fairview beat Ralston Valley 19-17 in the championship game on June 29. ough it’s not a real game on the scorecard, it’s a sure sign that football is rcloser than fans might think along the Front Range.

If there’s a piece of advice Emma Stutzman would give her younger self on the track, she would say to show up prepared, be patient and let your hard work speak for itself. e younger Stutzman hoped, but never imagined, she would be named the best female track runner in the state.
After stamping a historic high school career at Pomona High School, Stutzman was named the Gatorade Colorado Girls Track &
Field Player of the Year for 2022-23. at’s a rst in the Arvada school’s history.
“It wasn’t necessarily one of my goals to get the (Gatorade) award,” Stutzman said. “It was more of just like a cherry-on-top kind of thing. It de nitely wasn’t something I really even knew that much about.”
e award comes a month after Stutzman earned a long-anticipated rst state title, nishing the Class 5A girls 3,200-meter run in a time of 10 minutes, 12.68 seconds in May.
A day later, her winning time of 4:39.94 in the 1600 shattered the previous Colorado prep sports record, and ranked No. 3 nationally among girls prep competitors in 2023, earning Stutzman her second state title in two days. e previous 1600

record was held by Katie Rainsberger of Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, with a time of 4:44.31 in 2016.
Stutzman is also the 2023 Je erson County District Female Athlete of the Year. Another milestone: she clocked the nation’s No. 4 mark in the two-mile run (9:55.75) this spring at the Brooks PR Invitational in Washington state and the No. 5 national mark in the 3200 (9:56.34) at the Arcadia Invitational in California.
Stutzman joins recent Gatorade Colorado Girls Track & Field Players of the Year Agur Dwol (2021-22, Mullen High School), Riley Stewart (2020-21, Cherry Creek High School), Taylor James (201920, Niwot High School), and Anna Hall (2018-19, Valor Christian High School), among the state’s list of former award winners.
After four years of close calls and almosts, Stutzman claimed her rst and only individual high school state title in the nick of time, coming a week before graduating
and saying goodbye to high school.
According to Je co Athletics’ Dennis Pleuss, Stutzman had placed in the top four of the 1,600 and 3,200 at the state meet the past two years.
As a sophomore she took third in the 1,600 and runnerup in the 3,200. Last year, she took fourth in both the 1,600 and 3,200.
Her freshman year on the track was canceled due to COVID-19, so already time was ticking if she wanted a title.
In the 3,200 last month, Stutzman held onto her lead from the very beginning of the match and never let up, nishing with a victory scream as a wave of relief washed over her.
“It was just so exciting to nally be on the top of that podium and nally be able to go into a state meet and come out of it knowing I did everything I wanted to do,” she said. “It was de nitely nice to cap o my Pomona season (and career) with that win.”
Now all focus shifts toward college. Stutzman is heading to Northern Arizona University in Flagsta on a full scholarship to take her talents to the next level this

fall.
For one, she “hates running in the cold,” so it will be nice to escape to the desert when she wants to. But at the same time, Flagsta “isn’t too di erent from Colorado” climate-wise, meaning it won’t be a huge transition.
But still, Stutzman isn’t tempering her expectations for herself, despite making the college leap.
“I de nitely want to try to see how far I can go, with not just running for myself (but for my team),” she said. “I’m really excited to see what I can do, being a part of a team like that, and then just going as far as my mind and my body will take me. I de nitely want to be an NCAA AllAmerican.”
ough she’ll miss her home, her teammates, the camaraderie of an ordinary practice, team camps, running at Je co Stadium, and countless others, Stutzman said she’s excited about the challenge of the next level.
“I had a great team at Pomona. I absolutely love every single one of them,” Stutzman said.
As one of the school’s best to ever do it in any sport, Stutzman is leaving as an alltime legend.
Unless within thirty-five (35) days after the publication of this Notice you file an answer with the Court, or appear before the Court, your parental right to the Child may likely be terminated. You have the right to waive your right to appear and contest, and your failure to appear and contest, either in person or by a representative, will result in the Court forever terminating your parent-child legal relationship and granting the requested adoption.
