Theater shooting case costs $2.2 million before trial Cost in the Holmes case includes hundreds of thousands of dollars in police overtime By Dan Elliott

Associated Press Public spending to investigate and prosecute Aurora theater shooting defendant James Holmes has surpassed $2.2 million, weeks before opening statements in his trial, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press. That figure does not include how much it has cost to defend Holmes, who is represented by the Office of the State Public Defender because he cannot afford private attorneys. The number is neither complete nor

exorbitant, said Hollis Whitson, a Denver defense attorney who specializes in appellate law and who has studied the costs of a Colorado death penalty case in terms of days spent in court. But, she added, tallying the total cost of a death penalty case in dollars is difficult if not impossible. “In order to have a death penalty trial, even if you’re never going to execute a single person, there’s an enormous cost to maintaining the machinery of death,” which includes expert witnesses, specialists, private attorneys and others involved. Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to charges of killing 12 people and injuring 70 on July 20, 2012. Jury selection began in January, and opening statements are set for April 27. Holmes’ lawyers acknowledge he was

Kelley Heatley, left, was tricked by D’Deli’s April Fool’s gag in their advertisement that they would be closing, in favor of a “Quirky Quick Quiches.” Heatley wasn’t alone in the popular sandwich shop’s foolery. “People are constantly freaking out — it’s been great,” said Stacey Mass, cashier at D’Delis. “We’re not going anywhere, we do great business here.” Photo by Amy Woodward

arol Ann Bowles, the woman behind Olde Golden Christmas, has retired after 23 years of bringing holiday joy to residents and visitors. Bowles spent her last day as the volunteer coordinator and manager at the Golden Visitor’s Center on March 31. “It’s my time,” said Carol Ann Bowles. “It’s just time to move over for the younger generation.” Her departure, although well-deserved, will leave behind a void in the hearts of those who worked with her. “We’ve been like family,” said Jayne Byl, membership director at the Golden Chamber of Commerce. “It’s going to be a lot different around here.” Carol Ann Bowles, born in Chicago, Illinois has lived in Golden for 40 years ago. In 1990, she began working with the Golden Chamber of Commerce as an accountant under the Chamber’s former president and CEO, Gary Wink. At Wink’s behest, Bowles was given the task to build and manage a group of volunteers for the Golden Visitor’s Center. Since then, Bowles has created a talented and dynamic group of volunteers who do a lot to ensure that visitors and residents are well connected with the community and its events. “I just really feel like for me — she is the face of Golden,” said Tami BandimereShrader, vice president of administration at Bandimere Speedway. “She is always trying to connect people.” But what is also significant is Bowles’ Bowles continues on Page 18

Carol Ann’s Volunteers How has Carol Ann impacted you as a volunteer? “You can ask what you probably think are very stupid questions and she doesn’t treat them as if they are — which is nice. It’s a good thing for your ego.” Carol Christensen

“Oh my gosh, she is wonderful. She knows everything there is to know about Golden and I will miss her terribly — especially that laugh that she has.” Barbara Slee

“She’s very, very knowledgeable. She can answer almost any questions that you have. She’s very kind and she treats us all very, very well.” Wilma Bishop

“She’s bubbly, effervescent … and when somebody comes into the door, nobody is a stranger to her. She’s good about helping people — she makes you feel wanted.” Barb Melfi, aka Annie Oakley
