Imagine a park, but the park is a line.

That’s the Garrison Garden Paseo.

Ground was broken on the Garrison Garden Paseo in early January. The linear park will be open to the public in “late fall of 2024,” according to Sean Star, Arvada’s communications manager for parks.

The park is centered around a path that’s accessible by foot or bike that connects two of Arvada’s busiest throughways; Ralston Road (right before it turns into 58th Avenue.) and 57th Avenue on Garrison Street.

Paseo will create a much-needed connection between Ralston Road shops like Walmart and Ralston Central Park, among other resources in the area.

Star said the goal of the park was to create more usable connections between community members and resources on either side of the throughways.

“The new park will add a more gentle slope to the existing corridor to make the space more accessible for all users,”

Star said. “The central path in the park will create better, safer connections for community members with transit, grocery and other amenities along Ralston Road, including Ralston Central Park, the Ralston Creek Trail and many new restaurants and shops that are planned in the area in the next several years.”

Part of the Ralston Fields Arvada Urban Renewal Association’s redevelopment project, the Paseo will feature in an area of town that will soon become much more developed; it’s near the Ralston Commons retail park and Ralston Garden affordable multifamily housing development.

Both of those projects are projected to

be completed in the first quarter of 2025, according to AURA Executive Director Maureen Phair.

Directly adjacent to the Garrison Garden Paseo is the Arvada Community Garden, and the Paseo will tie the two together with demonstration gardens along the path.

Star also said the Paseo will include a shaded overlook that will provide views of the community garden and surrounding website. He added that the park aligns with Arvada City Council’s strategic goal of creating parks infrastructure that fits the city’s growing population.

“The new linear park directly aligns with the Arvada City Council’s strategic result of completing strategic investments and initiatives to ensure parks, trails, open space and amenities are in alignment with our diverse, changing, and growing community,” Star said.

NAR Releases Profile of Denver Metro Area Buyers and Sellers

Last week I reported on the real estate market in metro Denver. This week, I’m providing information from a National Association of Realtors (NAR) survey of buyers and sellers that was released in December. NAR did a national survey but provided data from the 169 Denver area respondents who had purchased a home in the 12-month period from July 2022 through June 2023. The buyers were identified from public records of transactions, not from MLS data.

Those buyers who had also sold a home constituted the database for the survey of sellers. The survey was limited to buyers of primary residences, not investment properties. Here’s my editing of the report released for Denver via the Denver Metro Association of Realtors.

Characteristics of Home Buyers • In Denver, the median age of recent home buyers was 43 years old, compared to 49 nationally. The largest share of home buyers in Denver this year were in the 25 to 34 years age group (27 percent) and the 35 to 44 years age group (25 percent). This graph shows both the Denver and national breakdowns:

• 82 percent of buyers were White/ Caucasian, 9 percent were Hispanic/ Latino, 2 percent were Black/African American, 8 percent were Asian/Pacific Islander, and 3 percent identified as other.

Financing the Home Purchase • For 42 percent of buyers, the source of the downpayment was their savings, and 35% of buyers cited using the proceeds from the sale of a primary residence for their downpayment. 10% used gifts from friends or relatives.

• The median percent financed for first-time buyers was 91 percent compared to 75 percent for repeat buyers.

• Buyers continue to see purchasing a home as a good financial investment. 82 percent reported they view a home purchase as a good investment.

Do replace damaged countertops.

Do replace those 1990s glass-and-brass lighting fixtures. (They’re so unappealing that Habitat’s thrift store won’t accept them as donations!)

Do replace burned out light bulbs. Now that LED replacement bulbs are so cheap (under a dollar in bulk at many stores), I suggest replacing all your incandescents or CFLs with LED “daylight” equivalents.

Do repaint where there is peeling or discolored paint. (Think “eyesore.”)

Do replace rotted timbers on your deck, then power wash and re-stain or repaint as necessary.

Do improve curb appeal (always the first impression), including weeding and pruning and freshening the front door.

Beyond the above advice, I tell my sellers to be strategic about major issues which they know need to be done. If these are likely to become inspection issues, don’t fix them prior to listing your home if they’re not the kind of eyesore which would deter a buyer from making an offer.

For example, I had a listing with damage to the concrete driveway. The seller was thinking he should repair it before putting the home on the market. We knew it would be an inspection issue, but by leaving it undone we could use it as a bargaining chip. Sure enough, we got under contract and the inspection demands included repairing the driveway. Since it was the most expensive item on a long list of repairs, we said we’d repair that but nothing else, and the buyer accepted it.

A brief history of Canyon Pines; soon to be Arvada’s newest subdivision Former landowner Terry Ten Eyck shares the story behind the land in far western Arvada

When Terry Ten Eyck and his wife Diana purchased the land that would eventually become the Canyon Pines subdivision, they hardly imagined the 93-home development that would begin to take shape over four decades later.

Now, after a final round of annexations and rezonings were approved at the Jan. 8 Arvada City Council meeting — “a clean up effort” according to developer Chad Ellington — the furthest western subdivision in Arvada will begin to take shape, with two homes already under construction.

The Ten Eycks came to own what would become Canyon Pines through Terry’s work as a realtor; he facilitated the sale between the previous landowner, the Jewel Mountain Land Company and Doug and Nancy Stevens in 1979. The Ten Eycks then purchased the land from the Stevens family the following year.

“The first parcel was purchased in 1980,” Terry Ten Eyck said. “And it

was a 35-acre parcel. And Diana and I had thought we’d like to buy some land where we could build a home, and we thought we might build there.

“But our children were, at that time, nine and five, and we decided, after a couple of years, that it was just a little bit too far away from the kinds of activities that were going to be important for our kids,” Ten Eyck continued. “And so, we just held it for a while.”

Eventually, the Canyon Pines subdivision was annexed into Arvada in 1997. The Ten Eycks continued to buy parcels of land in the area, including the May 2000 purchase of the Debrouillarde Parcel, which now is the site of the Debrouillarde Pump

Station and was annexed into Arvada at the Jan. 8 city council meeting.

The Debrouillarde Parcel was created in January 1903 by a correction deed filed from Frances M. Edwards to the Denver, Northwest and Pacific Railway Company; a predecessor to the Union Pacific Railway Company, according to Canyon Pines developer Chad Ellington of Peak Development.

That correction deed created a roughly three-acre parcel left in “no man’s land” between the railroad and what would become Canyon Pines — the Debrouillarde Parcel according to Ellington.

Ellington said the Ten Eycks spent the intervening years between the land’s purchase and Canyon Pines’ city council approval in 2017 designing the subdivision’s infrastructure and seeking annexation approvals from the city.

The Ten Eycks sold the land to Peak Development in 2021.

“Diana and I were very fortunate that Peak Development was the purchaser,” Terry Ten Eyck said. “And the reason I say that is that he has the right temperament to handle the challenges that come up during construction of roads and water and sewer and fiber optics and natural gas lines that took place over the last couple of years.

Terry Ten Eyck also cleared up a statement quoted in the most recent Arvada Press article on Canyon Pines; that the recent annexations are not the first parts of Arvada to stretch west of Highway 93.

“The first Arvada annexations west of State Highway 93 took place in July, 1989, by Ralston Development Corp,” Ten Eyck said. “Eight years later, Canyon Pines was annexed in July, 1997. Arvada’s January 8, 2024 annexation of the Debrouillarde parcel brings the rest of the lands assembled by our family over the last five decades into the city.”

Arvada Crime Briefs: Fire on Gray Street, robbery on Wadsworth Boulevard 34 arrests from the week of Jan. 8 to 14

A fire on the 5600 block of Gray Street was quickly extinguished by Arvada firefighters on Jan. 10, one of two major incidents the Arvada Police Department reported from the week of Jan. 8 to 14.

After first responders were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m., they

arrived to find a fire burning a flatbed trailer and a storage shed in the parking lot of an industrial complex. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames and began investigating the scene.

Though multiple propane tanks, electrical cords, a hot plate and other flammable objects were found near the site of the fire, investigators were unable to determine the source of the flames.

No one was injured in the fire.

Robbery on Wadsworth

On Jan. 13, an officer was flagged

down by an employee of a shop on the 6400 block of Wadsworth Boulevard who had allegedly been victimized by robbers.

The employee said two male suspects had begun taking merchandise from the store and were distracting store employees. One employee attempted to intervene as the suspects approached the exits; they were pushed out of the way by the suspects, who fled the scene.

Neither suspect has been identified, and the case is still under investigation.

Crime data

According to APD’s weekly activity report from the week of Jan. 8 to 14, there were 169 traffic stops with 84 drivers cited. There were 1,750 total calls for service, including 44 welfare checks and 35 ordinance violations.

APD made 34 arrests in total, resulting in 24 people being brought into custody and 10 being released on summons. The 130 total crime reports included nine motor vehicle thefts, 10 shoplifting incidents, three burglaries and 10 incidents of vandalism.

Tips for driving in snowy and icy conditions in Colorado

With colder temperatures comes snow blanketing the streets. The roads can be slippery and dangerous for Colorado drivers – new and native to the state. Experts say it’s important to be prepared for the difficult task of driving in the winter.

Colorado AAA says following a few tips can help keep drivers safe when traveling in the harsh winter climate.

“The first sustained, major weather event is always a useful reminder to Coloradans, regardless of whether you grew up here or if you’re new to town, to brush up on winter driving fundamentals: Slow down, don’t tailgate, and don’t slam on the gas or brakes,” Skyler McKinley, regional director of public affairs, said.

Prepare the vehicle

Colorado AAA encourages drivers to test their batteries and electrical systems, check all fluid levels, including antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluid and engine oil and make sure all lights operate properly.

Additionally, AAA advises people to inspect their tires, brakes, windshields and windshield wiper fluid.

“Remember, too, that four-wheel drive does not mean four-wheel stop.

We’ve had to winch out many topof-the-line trucks and SUVs, many equipped with winter tires, simply because their drivers were going too fast for the conditions,” McKinley said.

“Still, as with any storm, the majority of our calls were related to dead batteries, flat tires and engine operability, and most of those were from folks who were already safe at home.”

Keep an emergency kit

For those unlucky enough to end up stranded, whether by sliding off the road or getting stuck in traffic during a closure, Colorado AAA encourages drivers to keep an emergency kit in their cars.

Driving in the snow can be scary if drivers don’t take precautions. Colorado AAA offers a lot PHOTO BY ELISABETH SLAY of tips to keep all drivers safe in and out of the mountains.

“Keep an emergency kit in your car with tire chains, abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter, small shovel, flashlight with extra batteries, ice scraper, rags or paper towels, flares or other warning devices, booster cables and a first aid kit,” Colorado AAA said.

Drivers should bring blankets, jackets, hats and gloves for themselves and passengers. People should also pack water and snacks, such as energy bars, and bring pet food if they’re traveling with four-legged friends.

“Finally, remember that an ounce of preparation is worth a pound of cure.

Your battery likely tried to warn you it wasn’t up to the task of starting your engine in sub-zero temperatures, likely through dimming headlights or sluggish starts in warmer weather,” McKinley said.

McKinley said by addressing issues drivers will be more prepared for the conditions and any emergency situations they may accrue.

“By addressing all those issues when they first come up, you can help make our roads safer, and significantly reduce your odds of needing to call for assistance in dangerous conditions,” McKinley said.

Driving on icy roads

When driving on icy roads, Colorado AAA advises that people slow down and

be careful when accelerating, turning or braking, doing all gradually.

“Adjust your speed to the road conditions and leave yourself ample room to stop. Allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you,” the company advises.

People also shouldn’t tailgate, they need to watch the traffic ahead of them, avoid unnecessarily changing lanes and use extreme caution on bridges and overpasses.

“Black ice typically forms first in shaded areas of the roadway and on bridges and overpasses that freeze first and melt last,” McKinley said. “Although the road leading up to a bridge may be fine, the bridge itself could be a sheet of ice.”

Crystal Essman, a crime prevention specialist for Englewood Police Department, said it’s important for people to make sure they slow down and increase their distance from other cars.

“Increase your following distance enough so that you’ll have plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead of you,” Essman said. “Don’t crowd a snowplow.

Snow plows travel slowly, make wide turns, stop often, overlap lanes and exit the road frequently.”

She also encourages people to make sure their children are secure in the proper car seat and that those seats are installed correctly.

The film stars Thu Tran, Heather Lawless, James Urbaniak, David Brown, and and rapper Fat Tony as the voice of MeeMoo. It’s a short film about a pet owner Tina (played by Thu Tran) who embarks on a fantastic process to connect with her terminally ill dog MeeMoo (voiced by rap artist Fat Tony).

“It was something like between 12 and 15 years ago, I just had an idea,” Simakis said about “The Rainbow Bridge.” He described knowing that he wanted to do a film and that he wanted Tran in that film. Simakis

also knew that he wanted to make a fantasy film at that time.

The idea remained in Simakis’ head while he worked on the Meow Wolf exhibit. In fact, anyone who has visited the Pizza Pals Playzone will see the similarities in “The

Rainbow Bridge.”

Simakis explains that those similarities are there because he had a similar goal for the film as he did for the exhibit: immersion. And he wanted it on both sides of the camera.

“Bring immersion on the side of the performers who are on set that day, the crew and just everyone feeling like those spaces are real,” he said. “But of course, for the audience.”

Simakis said his goal was to get the audience to ask themselves questions.

“Oh, this place, is that real? What’s going on?” Simakis went on to say that he wanted the film to “feel lived in and authentic in that way, even if it’s fantastical.”

To achieve this immersion, Simakis put the same attention to detail into both his Meow Wolf exhibit and the film.

“I kept thinking, if you walk through this room (Pizza Pals Playzone), or watch this short film (“The Rainbow Bridge”), once walk through the room for five seconds, or you watch the film a couple times, I want it to be the same result which is that there’s something for you on every level,” Simakis said.

The film and the exhibit have so much embedded content that the viewer finds more meaning as they sit in or watch the projects.

Colorado Cowboy Gathering returns to Golden for poetry, music

If anyone can brave sub-zero temperatures and snowy conditions to put on a night-to-remember show, it’s cowboy poets and musicians.

After taking a break last year, the Colorado Cowboy Gathering returned to Golden Jan. 11-14, but this time at a new venue.

Or, technically two.

After hosting a special membersonly show Jan. 11 at the new Miners Alley Performing Arts Center, the Colorado Cowboy Gathering held its Jan. 12-14 shows at the Buffalo Rose.

Musician Lori Beth Brooke, a firsttime CCG performer from Texas, was impressed to see how packed the Buffalo Rose was on a Friday afternoon. She and the other performers described how they see each other at Western events throughout the year, so the annual Golden-based gathering feels like a family reunion.

Many of the regular attendees felt similarly. Golden’s Paul Chamberlin said he and his wife Nona love seeing their friends among the performers and fellow attendees every year.

“It’s a fun weekend,” Chamberlin said. “ … We’re here to try and help support it because it’s a good event.

We have lots of fun, and we’ve been to most of them for the last 33 years.”

303 Training Center opens Olde Town Arvada jiu-jitsu studio Second location of Brazilian jiu-jitsu training center offers programming for students aged 4 and up

Arvada native Tony Basile always wanted to bring Brazilian jiu-jitsu to his hometown.

Basile is a longtime practitioner of jiu-jitsu, a martial art he said can improve mental health and teach perseverance. Basile opened the Olde Town Arvada location shortly after the beginning of this year at the corner of Grant Place and Olde Wadsworth Boulevard.

The Arvada location is the second 303 Training Center after the studio’s original location in Westminster, which Basile opened in 2010.

“This really changes people’s lives,” Basile said. “I could go on and on about what this does for people — it’s why don’t work in the UFC anymore and choose to do this on a local level because of just anxiety in society and men with their depression and women too — we have this unbelievable women’s population.

“It is just more healthy than bowling or pickleball,” Basile continued.

“It’s a chance to really kind of push your own boundaries. And it’s not just self-defense.”

titioners overcome obstacles on and off the mat. He mentioned one student who was caught in a rip tide and credits his jui jitsu training for instilling him with the strength to keep pushing and get himself out of the situation.

Basile — a black belt in Brazilian jui jitsu — described the martial art as “cage fighting… when the fight goes to the ground. Everything you see that’s on the ground in those competitions would be jui jitsu.”

“Well, jui jitsu is judo,” Basile said.

“But once you get to the ground, you continue to wrestle. So, it would be chokeholds and joint submissions. And how it works is it’s pinning big muscle groups against little muscle groups. So, for example, your back and hips and arms would be stronger than my arm on its own.

No matter no matter how strong I am, generally, you’re going to have an advantage there.

“It’s learning how to position your body in a way where, when somebody’s trying to hold on you or hold you down, you could position yourself to get into like a checkmate position which would be a chokehold or a submission lock,” Basile continued.

The studio offers classes for kids as young as four and six, intermediate children’s classes, teen classes and adult classes. In addition to jui jitsu, the studio has classes in kickboxing and wrestling as well.

Classes generally end with sparring, which in jui jitsu, as opposed to other martial arts, can be done at full speed without injury risk.

Basile said his hands-on approach to teaching fosters “a certain culture and safety aspect and fun aspect” that allows for students to spar with each other without lines being crossed.

“I can’t think of anything else as an adult that you can be a part of — outside of maybe your local church community, maybe— that has such a positive environment,” Basile said.

“And positive role models.”

One of those role models is UFC champion Rose Namajunas, who Basile trained at his Westminster studio en route to her UFC strawweight world championship in 2017.

“We were part of the first UFC world title ever won locally out of any dojo in Colorado; and the UFC

started here in 1983,” Basile said. “24 years later, one of our students won the belt at Madison Square Garden, and ironically, won it at 3:03 in the first round. (Namajunas) actually won two world titles out of this gym.

“And it’s incredible because this day and age now, things are going so fast,” Basile continued. “You don’t really see those high-level athletes anymore in the neighbor-

hood dojo.”

303 Training Center has about 250 students at its Westminster location, Basile said, 80 of whom are youth practitioners. The Arvada studio has just begun accepting students and will cap out around 150 members, Basile said.

VOICES Aiming for a soft landing

P

art of my role as the Arvada Chamber CEO is to keep a close eye on data, trends and business feedback to determine how we can ensure that we are providing the resources our community and economy need to thrive. As we start 2024, I wanted to share my “hot take” on what is ahead and what we can do about it! Sadly, I don’t have a crystal ball and as we have learned in recent years, external circumstances can easily change the course, but based on what we know today this is what I am watching.

Stabilizing economy

For nearly two years, a prevailing sense of apprehension has gripped business leaders as they maneuver through an unpredictable global economic landscape. Encouragingly, the outlook for 2024 appears to be relatively stable, attributed to a fluctuation of adverse and favorable factors. Notably, consumer spending is decelerating, interest rates are stabilizing, inflation trends are moderating, and there are signs of improvement in the previously problematic supply chain bottlenecks.

This collective shift is reason for optimism, aligning with the forecasts of reputable economists who predict a smooth descent in 2024 and an opportunity for growth in 2025.

What is the Arvada Chamber doing?

• SizeUp: Data plays a critical role in shaping sustainable business decisions. In Q1, the Chamber and Arvada Economic Development Association will introduce a cutting-

By building improved connection between business and policy leaders we can more effectively communicate the implications of policy decisions at the local, state and national level.

• Business Policy Engagement: The pace of policy development at the Capitol can be challenging to keep up with. In an effort to improve efficiencies in how we send and gather information about business bills, we are launching a platform dedicated to ensuring we are able to communicate quickly and make a greater impact.

• Election Forums: In the fall of 2024, we will be hosting a series of election forums so our community can meet candidates across the political spectrum. These forums are founded on the tenet of civility and offer a space for a productive dialogue around the challenges and so-

Political tension

Workforce woes continue

The economy of 2024 will be characterized by a reduced workforce, a trend that will emerge as a central economic challenge in the foreseeable future. Employers will continue to struggle to find the skilled talent they need to meet demand. The latest data shows that we have 9.5 million job openings in the U.S., but only 6.5 million unemployed workers. A continued focus on building our own workforce and upskilling current employees is necessary to overcome this immense deficit.

What is the Arvada Chamber doing?

• Work-Based Learning Incentive Program (WBLIP): In today’s talent climate, employers need to think about how they train their own talent to meet their needs. The state program, WBLIP, offers employers up to $10,000 for building and implementing plans that grow their workforce and upskill current employees. The Arvada Chamber has $250,000 remaining to support employers in the first half of 2024.

• Career Coach: In 2023, the Arvada Chamber along with key regional talent partners launched a new platform that allows job seekers to understand the various roles in our region and utilize a data-informed approach to determine how they prepare and engage. The hope is this tool will better align job seekers and employers and reduce labor shortages.

How the GOP primary process works

A

s of Jan.11, there are 45 declared or rumored candidates for the GOP nomination in Congressional Districts 3, 4 and 5 combined, according to politics1.com. With so many reported candidates for three nominations in what would ordinarily be safe Republican districts, the race for the nomination will more than likely be tantamount to election. It is a good idea to review how a candidate can be placed on the GOP primary ballot along with commentary on each of the two methods.

These two methods apply statewide in all races rather than just the three congressional districts and to both major parties.

The first method is the Assembly process. Members of the Assembly for these Congressional Districts are elected at the upcoming precinct caucuses in March. The number of delegates to these Assemblies varies. When I was active, the state party generally set the number of delegates at one delegate for every 250 voters. The state party will calculate how many delegates a county and congressional district will receive.

Based on the data from the Secretary of State’s office CD5 for example has 138,352 registered Republican voters as of Dec. 1. With this data and ratio of one delegate for 250 voters, the CD5 Assembly for example will tentatively have 553 potential delegates to it.

Delegates listen to candidates for office make their pitch to them.

If a candidate receives more than 30% of the delegates’ votes, then they will move on to June’s primary ballot. Receiving 10 and 30% they will make it to the primary if they have petitioned onto the primary ballot (the next method).

With less than 10% of the vote at an Assembly, you do not advance to the primary.

The other route to make it to the primary ballot is the petition process. Simply put, you circulate

a petition to votCOLUMNIST ers and ask them to sign it to place your name on the primary ballot.

For U.S. Representatives, 1,500 signatures are required. Oftentimes you must use paid petition Joe Webb circulators to petition onto the ballot. The estimated cost per signature is anywhere from $15 to $25 per signature. However, it must be noted that with a cadre of dedicated supporters who are willing to work on a volunteer basis, it is possible to get onto the ballot via the petition process.

Both processes are equally valid ways to get access to the primary ballot. I would encourage any candidate to petition onto the ballot especially those who are in a crowded race. Embrace the petition process and ignore the naysayers. Both methods are a means of saying someone should be on the GOP primary ballot to make the case to voters. Votes at an assembly accomplish this as well as signatures on a petition.

Petition signers are saying that this person is worthy of making their case to the voters. Supporters of the Assembly process will deride petitioning on as a “pay to play” endeavor. It has a financial element yes, but I would rather have someone who has the financial resources to petition onto the ballot as a choice in the primary than not. Petitioning is ultimately more democratic because it requires 1,500 signatures versus just a small portion of 500-600 delegates.

Election 2024 promises to be interesting. Stay informed throughout the year about the choices you should make as a voter.

Gloria G. Rudden

August 5, 1933 - December 29, 2023

Gloria Rudden, aged 90, passed away peacefully in her home on December 29th, 2023. She was reunited with her beloved husband and friend, Richard Wayne Rudden, who preceded her in death in 2009.

Gloria was born at General Grant Hospital in Colorado on August 5th, 1933, and spent her formative years on a farm in Adams County. At just six weeks old, an unfortunate incident rendered her family homeless, but they later found a new home in Northwest Adams County, where Gloria spent the rest of her remarkable life.

Alongside her mother Ruth, Gloria developed the farm property, transforming it into a community with numerous homes and commercial spaces. During the construction of the I-70 interstate, Gloria and her mother acquired homes that were being demolished or sold, relocating them to their farm.

Later in life, after raising her children, Gloria pursued higher education, earning degrees in Photography and Graphic Design with honors. Her passion for photography LACOVARA

led her to a career in medical administration.

Gloria was not only a dedicated mother to Michael and Wendy, a loving mother-in-law to Roger, but also a cherished grandmother to Megan, Brian, and Shaun.

Active in her community, Gloria served on numerous boards in Adams County and Berkeley Water. Her proudest achievements included her work with close friends to preserve open spaces in Adams County.

Recently, Hyland Hills Parks and Recreation honored her dedication by naming a lake after her at Clear Creek Valley Park.

As Gloria demonstrated throughout her life, one person can indeed make a difference. In keeping with her legacy, the family kindly requests that you plant a tree in her memory and to make any donations to the Adams County Open Space general fund.

Per her final wishes, a small private funeral will be held to honor and remember Gloria, who believed that all her dear friends were eagerly waiting for her at the pearly gates.

Joseph Anthony Lacovara

November 19, 1946 - January 14, 2024

Joseph Anthony Lacovara was born November 19, 1946, to Rudolph Lacovara and Dorothy (Fontana) Lacovara, in Brooklyn, New York.

He departed this life on January 14th, 2024, at the age of 77 years.

Joseph attended Our Lady of Angels elementary school and graduated from St. Francis Prep high school. He attended 1 year at St. Francis College, then attended and graduated from McPherson College, in McPherson, Kansas, in 1969.

He was united in marriage to Regina Ann Fillmore on August 30th, 1969. They lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for 12 years, then moved to Colorado, settling finally in Arvada, Colorado.

Joseph worked as a respiratory therapist for 20

years, ending his career as the Directory of Respiratory Therapy at Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center. Joseph was an avid sports fan, especially of the New York Yankees baseball and the University of Oklahoma football teams.

Joseph loved his Lord Jesus and served in the churches faithfully.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents.

His survivors include his son, Rudolph Anthony Lacovara and wife Tabitha, of Arvada, CO; daughter, Kelly Ann Martines and husband Rich, of Oak Ridge, TN; two granddaughters, Mikayla A. Troke and Taylor G. Lacovara; one grandson, Michael J. Lacovara; sister, Linda Gasparino and husband Louis, and many other relatives and friends

Volunteers say community orchestras create more connected, well-rounded society

n a cold January night in a Wheat Ridge church, a large group of people traveled back in time to the 1800s — not by using new technology, but rather musical instruments.

Brows furrowed and fingers fluttered as the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, made up of roughly 70 volunteer musicians, perform a composition from an 1800s opera, “Carmen.”

The community orchestra is one of many in the metro Denver region that offer people an opportunity to bring their musical talents and passions to life regardless of their profession, age or background.

out the metro region say the effort is worth it, highlighting the value of music for themselves and their communities.

Chris Loring, principal violist of the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, said the orchestra brings together people who share the same passion that they’ve all had since first picking up their instruments.

“And now, here we are. We have this talent that we can share with each other, and that’s really fulfilling just to put it all together and be artistic and have fun,” she said. “It’s a great sense of community.”

In the southern metro region of Denver, the Littleton Symphony Orchestra shares a similar goal of upholding community, said Bill Mesa, an assistant principal percussionist in the symphony.

“With any community orchestra, they want to be a part of the commu-

nity,” Mesa said. “Not just in it.”

Compared to an organization like the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, which dates back to the 1950s, a relatively newer community orchestra in the metro region is the Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra, founded in 2000.

Katie Smith, principal oboe of the Lone Tree symphony, underlined the importance of having an orchestra in any community, whether it be Jefferson County, Littleton or Lone Tree.

“Having arts organizations provides a more well-rounded community as a whole,” Smith said. “It creates a more pleasant community to live in when you have more opportunities for the arts.”

The start of lifelong musical careers

For both Loring and Smith, their musical careers started at a young age with playing the piano.

Loring, a 42-year-old pet photographer and private music teacher who lives in Jefferson County, said that in sixth grade, she joined the student orchestra.

Out of the roughly 25 students there, no one had signed up to play viola, a string instrument that is slightly larger than a violin and has a deeper sound. The teacher asked who in the room wanted to play viola, leading to an awkward silence, Loring recalled.

“This cute boy next to me grabbed my hand, raised it up in the air, and the rest is history,” she said. “From that point forward, I really fell in love with the instrument.”

She went on to the University of Northern Colorado and studied viola performance, and today, she helps teach young musicians.

“I love teaching for a couple of reasons. No. 1, I can have a hand in developing musicians that are going to come behind me,” Loring said. “These orchestras don’t fill up unless we have students that are learning and growing and developing a passion for something that some people might consider dorky or weird — but these kids are really, really excited about it.”

Smith, a 50-year-old Highlands Ranch resident who does project work with Cigna Healthcare as her day job, said her mom was a church musician.

“She started me on piano at 5 (years old) and then I apparently kept asking … what instrument I should play if I wanted to play in church,” Smith said. “She said, ‘Please play the oboe.’”

Playing the oboe, a woodwind instrument, as a young child would have been a tall task, Smith said, so she initially started by playing the flute. By the end of fifth grade, however, she started the oboe.

“I took to the oboe like a duck to water,” she said.

Smith got her undergraduate degree in music from the University of Denver, she said. Although she had always intended to be a professional musician, when she got into college, she was encouraged to double major “so that I would at least have something to eat,” she said with a laugh.

She got a minor in business and realized she did not want to pursue a professional music career, she said.

“I think since I don’t do it as my primary profession, I get more enjoyment out of it as an avocation than a vocation,” Smith said.

For Mesa, a 57-year-old Centennial resident, his music career started as a young boy playing drums on coffee cans that his mom discarded, he said. He recalled listening to his dad’s vinyl records that featured lots of

percussion, drawing him to the drums.

“The clincher is when I first saw ‘Star Wars,’ and the music just blew me away,” Mesa said.

“I thought, ‘Wow. Hear all those drums.’”

Eventually, he picked up drums through public schooling and performed through college.

However, he did not major in music performance.

Rather, he found an interest in accounting and is now an accounting professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Highlighting the ability of community orchestras to connect people, he said some of his former students will attend the Littleton Symphony Orchestra’s concerts and come up to him afterward to catch up.

“Those are all community factors. There doesn’t have to be anonymity,” he said about local performances.

Discovering community orchestras

From seeing an advertisement to getting a phone call about an opening, the process of getting involved in a community orchestra can look different for everyone.

Loring said she first learned about the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra when she moved to Golden around 2008, saying she saw an advertisement for it. She had been looking for an orchestra to join and had heard great things about it, she said.

“It’s been around for decades, and many of the people who play in this orchestra have been here for decades,” she said. “When I joined, this was known as one of … the premier orchestras in terms of community orchestras for this area.”

The orchestra, which musicians have to audition to get into, is made up of roughly 70 people ranging from college-age to post-retirement age, she said.

“It’s a really great orchestra full of some insanely talented musicians. We have played repertoire that you hear from the professional symphony,” she said.

Smith got involved in the Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra around 2006 after hearing about it through a friend. When she started playing with the orchestra, they performed in a church, she recalled. Now, they perform in the Lone Tree Arts Center, which she said is an amazing opportunity that not every community orchestra has.

She estimated roughly 60 musicians are in the orchestra, which requires an audition to join.

“We provide excellent entertainment for the community and it’s done in a manner where it isn’t haughty,” she said. “It’s presented in a way that people really feel encouraged to go and I think they really enjoy the opportunity and they enjoy the performance.”

Smith described making music with others in the symphony as both beautiful and challenging, especially if the musicians have different skill sets.

“You have to be patient,” she said.

Mesa got connected to the Littleton Symphony Orchestra when he got a phone call from the thenprincipal percussionist asking if he would be interested in filling in because the orchestra needed an extra person. Some time afterward, Mesa auditioned and became a regular member of the symphony about 17 years ago.

“It challenged me more. It upped my game and playing because the players in the orchestra are remarkable, high caliber,” he said. “You can get some exceptional performances from the community orchestras in the Denver metro area that you live by, and you’re supporting the community.”

The vision of the Littleton Symphony Orchestra, which is made up of about 50 musicians ranging in age from early 20s to upper 70s, is to provide performances that elevate the human spirit, Mesa said.

“We pursue that relentlessly, knowing it’s something we’ll never accomplish,” he said. “That’s what drew me into the orchestra.”

The value of music and community

Although volunteering in the symphony orchestra requires hours of practice and rehearsal, one of the most rewarding factors is making music with friends, Mesa said.

“There’s nothing quite like that type of effort when you have this number of people and when (a) performance pops and it sparks.

And you can feel that from the audience because there is some communication between the orchestra and the audience,” he said. “It’s the best. You can’t replace it.”

Community orchestras are valuable because they provide a music outlet for residents who may not have the budget to pay the higherpriced tickets to see a professional orchestra, Mesa said.

“Just give the orchestra a chance,” he said. “It’s fun, and it’s live music … something we’re, I think, missing nowadays.”

Smith said the Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra is fortunate because it has had the support of the city since the very beginning.

Similar to Mesa, Smith said being a part of any orchestra is a unique, special experience.

“I think the most rewarding part of any performance is knowing that you’ve provided not only (an) escape in what you’re doing and what you’re creating — you’re also creating an experience for somebody else,” Smith said.

“I think the most important thing for folks to know is that we’re here,” she added. “You don’t necessarily have to go downtown to hear the symphony.”

busy lives, Loring said. Yet, the time and effort is worth it.

“As a musician, the thing that I love about working in a group like this and performing is that this is the only way we get to bring to life some of the art that’s been given to this world,” Loring said. “With classical music, we have composers who wrote these incredible manuscripts, and they wrote these ideas and these concepts and these stories in notes.

“And it’s up to us to translate that, and to create a story and to tell that through our music using our talents. And that, to me, is the coolest part,” she added.

Community orchestras are important to the local community for a number of reasons, Loring said.

One of them is that the orchestras provide activities for residents to enjoy. Another is the opportunity the orchestra provides to the volunteers, giving musicians a chance to continue to play their instrument when maybe they otherwise would not have.

“How many people stop playing because they don’t have those opportunities?” Loring said. “Orchestras, like the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, give that to people. And that’s really, really important for the community.”

Prismajic casts a spell at Colorado Mills

G

etting lost in a work of art is an experience that has been happening to people for centuries, and artists are always looking for new ways to get the public invested in their work.

The creatives behind Prismajic have taken this urge and supersized it in its new location in Colorado Mills, 14500 W. Colfax, Suite 359, in Lakewood.

“Prismajic is an immersive adventure that marries art and cuttingedge technology to transport visitors to the enchanting and surreal forest inhabited by Shiki, a mystical yeti and leader of the Spirits of the Forest,” wrote Lisa Fox, marketing manager, in an email interview.

Co-founded by Eric Jaenike and Jennifer Mosquera, the organization has been around since 2013, but the Lakewood location is its first permanent home. According to provided information, Prismajic started building immersive experiences for corporate clients in 2013 under the name Artistry Events & Design. Even while doing that work, the aim was to open true mesmerizing experiences that could be enjoyed by everyone.

They got closer to that goal with the 2019 opening of Natura Obscura, their first immersive experience, and afterward, Shiki Dreams came into existence. It began as a small pop-up and was named the 4th Best Immersive Experience in the country by USA Today in 2021.

Getting lost in a world isn’t just something Prismajic is interested in offering in exhibit form — there’s also The Night Owls, which is a bit like a cocktail bar and a bit like one of the group’s installations. Sure, there are curated craft cocktails, mocktails, and light bites, but that’s not all. With a theme of European alleyways, nature and mystical owls, there’s also a stage for music, cocktail classes, poetry readings and other special events.

The aim of Prismajic is to delight its visitors and help them get out of the real world for a while.

Virtuosic organ music comes to Lakewood

“The town wants us here, and we want to be here,” Russell said, adding how welcoming the Chamber of Commerce, the city and residents have been.

Dave Stamey, a singer/songwriter who’s been performing at CCG for 15-plus years, described how CCG has changed since he started performing while it was still at the Arvada Center.

He said CCG continues to develop a very loyal audience, both locally and long-distance.

It draws in regular attendees from all over Colorado, plus others who drive in from Kansas, Wyoming and elsewhere, he described.

Stamey, who headlined the Jan. 14 show, traveled from California himself because he loves performing in Golden every year.

“It’s a neat place,” he said. …and the skies are not cloudy all day

For the uninitiated, Russell emphasized how the Colorado Cowboy Gathering doesn’t showcase the country music one hears on the radio, but rather songs and poems — whether original or traditional — about the cowboy lifestyle.

Russell, a poet and singer/ songwriter, said he writes about his life keeping cows and horses in southern Colorado.

Many of his fellow performers had similar experiences, like Miska Paget who shared poems about being a veterinarian or Brooke who shared her yo-

deling, accordion-playing and songwriting skills.

While she’s been playing accordion since second grade, Brooke started yodeling about 20 years ago. She said it’s about emphasizing the break in one’s voice that one normally covers up, but people can practice how to yodel versus sing.

While she only performed 10 minutes during the Jan. 12 show, she expected a full slate for the Jan. 13-14 shows. But, she hoped to perform at CCG again if invited.

Finally, Russell wanted newcomers to know CCG is family-friendly and features about 20 of the very best cowboy and cowgirl performers in the country.

“They have to come,” Russell said of those who’ve never attended a show. “ … After one time, they’re hooked.”

“So adding jokes [(to the film) that nobody’s reading and references, the quantum wellness questionnaire, it’s all real,” Simakis explained.

These elements may be missed the first time viewing “The Rainbow Bridge,” but they are things people will see after viewing the short film each time, Simakis said.

According to Simakis, attention to detail is what makes the immersion possible. The details also made him work overtime at building the worlds.

“How can I do as much as possible in the time that I have by just building, designing and cranking out poster after poster after poster,” Simakis said. “You don’t see probably 60% of the posters at all. They’re either too small, or they’re on one side of the room. It’s fine, because I knew there was going to be more than enough details, but I wanted to have it all there so that the set felt lived in and it felt authentic.”

The process of building the “Rainbow Bridge” sets differed from the Pizza Pals Playzone due mainly to one factor, COVID. “Working on Meow Wolf was something that we were doing during mostly COVID,” Simakis said.

He revealed that planning took place as early as 2017, but the

building happened in 2020.

“My wife and I moved a couple of hours outside of LA since then to a mountain town where it’s just very cozy and quiet,” he said. “Being able to be alone with your thoughts while worldbuilding, is like the most pure form of art.”

According to Simakis, the Pizza Pals world was also a challenge because of permanence.

“The permanence of Pizza Pals made it challenging, but that was also okay,” Simakis said.

“That’s a mountain to climb. Somebody walking through for five seconds, or somebody taking a look at every single aspect of artwork for two hours are going to notice the same thing.”

Simakis said the viewers would notice Easter eggs, or references to other things in pop culture, science and other artworks.

“Film is no different,” Simakis said.

“I have to make the footage. It was amazing how much the film and Meow Wolf exhibit overlap. The mentality of the film almost felt like an extension of making an immersive space in that way.”

Simakis said the hardest part of the “Rainbow Bridge” process was letting go of the sets. Simakis is not done with building these intricate worlds and visual storytelling via film. He and his wife Suki Rose have plans for a feature-length film.

CHSAA poised to adopt shot clock for 2026 school year

AURORA - The Colorado High School Activities Association is ready for its boys and girls basketball teams to use a shot clock starting in the 20262027 season.

All that’s left is a vote by its legislative council to amend a basketball committee report and make the rule official.

The council meets Jan. 30, at the Douglas County School District Legacy Campus, 10035 S. Peoria St., Lone Tree. It’s the first of two decision-making meetings for the council this school year.

The association is following a rule put forth by the National Federation of High Schools in 2021.

All levels of boys and girls basketball will use a 35-second shot clock. According to the agenda, 27 state associations use a shot clock in some form or other.

Among the advantages are no more stalling, thus reducing the number of possessions in each game, and preparation for players to use a shot clock while playing college ball. The disadvantages are costs to financially strapped districts. The agenda packet pegged the price tag at between $2,500 and $5,000 during a time when school budgets are already tight. Another potential issue is associated costs to train and pay people to run the shot clock.

The council is expected to vote on a proposal to move up the beginning of the spring sports season by a week.

The main reason is longstanding. Teams that qualify for state tournaments, particularly baseball, often play over the Memorial Day weekend, which causes problems for participants, schools and organizers in trying to find ways to host the events. It’s also a common weekend for highschool graduations.

One potential issue wouldn’t take place that often. The agenda packet said there will be one more week of so-called “crossover” time between the winter and spring seasons.

The council could add an extra week for football games this season. If approved, it would mean the removal of a bylaw that allowed teams that hosted end-of-summer camps and that didn’t have a bye to schedule a contest within two weeks of the first day of practice.

Football practice is due to begin the week of Aug. 11 this year. The agenda packet said adding an extra week to play games will make it easier to schedule game officials. It could also create one to two bye weeks during the season.

to cap sub-varsity volleyball team’s number of matches at 23, not including regional and state tournaments. That schedule limit is already in place for varsity teams. The down side, the agenda said, is extra costs for game officials and/or transportation.

In girls softball, there’s a proposal to eliminate the double-elimination regional brackets for both class 4A and 5A teams.

“With several schools (4A and 5A) playing games on different days, different formats and/ or same day, we have created an equity issue for our student-athletes,” the agenda said. Class 3A schools, such as Fort Lupton High School, use the same number of teams in the so-called round of

The proposal would make the format consistent across all three classifications. Also, the agenda said, host schools that have just one field would not be able to host at their home site.

There is a financial impact, especially for schools that play on two days.

“If we eliminate the two-day option, there will be less of a financial impact for all traveling schools.,” the agenda said “This also helps those schools who have to rent a complex to host their regional tournament.”

The proposal did not get a vote to move out of the association’s softball committee.

A mid-January snowstorm meant frigid temperatures and dangerous driving for Clear Creek County residents and tourists, but skiers and snowboarders are smiling, according to Loveland Ski Area Marketing

Manager Dustin Schaefer.

“Skiing and snowboarding conditions are just amazing up here, lots of powder, lots of smiles, people are pretty stoked on the snow that just came in,” Schaefer said.

This after what Schaefer described as a “slow start” to the season. More than 25 inches fell on the mountain in just 72 hours during the MLK holiday weekend, according to snow reports.

The additional snow allows Loveland Ski Area to make more of the mountain available to skiers and boarders.

“The season started out slow with snow, but this recent storm helped us out a ton. We opened up some of the steeps off of Chet’s Dream,”
