Driving instructor Ben Pyatt retires after 28 years at Arvada Driving School Local math teacher and driving instructor estimated to have taught 20,000 local teens to drive

Learning to drive is often a formative experience for young people, and for almost three decades, large swaths of Arvadans have learned the rules of the road from one instructor; Ben Pyatt.

After years of teaching driving, Pyatt is retiring, as Arvada Driving School has been sold to new ownership. The soon-to-be-rebranded driving school will retain most of its instructors after the sale is finalized.

Pyatt — who worked at Arvada

Driving School for 28 years and was a math teacher at Arvada High School from 1971 to 2001 — started teaching driving at AHS because the school was low on driving teachers at the time. Shortly after becoming certified, the school did away with its driver’s education program.

After working for AAA for a couple of years, Pyatt wound up at Arvada Driving School, where he stayed for the rest of his driver’s education career.

Pyatt said he learned early on the job that the best way to teach driving is to learn by doing.

“I found that the way we learn to drive is to get out and go,” Pyatt said. “The kids improved their skills pretty quickly when you get out to do it. It’s always a positive thing as far as the satisfaction of seeing them get out and go and do well.”

With the Rise of Electronic Contracts, Agents May Not Be Fully Explaining Documents

When I first was licensed as a real estate agent 20 years ago, we hand delivered listing agreements and other documents and would go through them paragraph-by-paragraph before asking buyers or sellers to sign them.

Now that electronic contracts and electronic signatures are commonplace, that’s not happening so much, and I think that’s a problem — one that may have contributed to the recent verdict against seller agents offering compensation to agents who produce a buyer for their listings.

I am guilty of this myself. When I am in a listing presentation I bring my laptop and like to compose a listing agreement while the seller is at hand, explaining each entry that I make in the 12page document. But just as often I will prepare the document at my desk and send it to the client for review and signing, saying, “Call me with any questions.” I don’t believe I am any different than 90% of my colleagues in that practice.

Small Business Saturday, Christmas tree lighting set for Nov. 27 in Olde Town Arvada Annual celebration of local businesses coincides with holiday season kickoff

Arvada’s annual celebration of its small businesses is set for Nov. 27, as Small Business Saturday returns as the kickoff of the holiday season in Olde Town.

The celebration will begin around 10:30 a.m. and wrap up with a Christmas tree lighting in Olde Town Square, which will take place at 6

p.m.

For Small Business Saturday, the first 100 visitors to the square will be treated to free coffee from Hunter Bay. Free chicken chunks from Secret Level will also be offered.

“We really view Small Business Saturday as the official kick-off to the holiday season in Olde Town,” Olde Town Business Improvement District Director Joe Hengstler said.

“This time of year is critical for small businesses everywhere, and Small Business Saturday is an opportunity to remind the public of the importance of spending your dollars locally and supporting our local economy.”

The holiday festivities will begin at 4 p.m. with the first Holiday Maker’s

Market of the year. The skating rink will return as well, along with two bars serving alcoholic beverages — a new addition this year.

One bar will be located outside Schoolhouse, while another will be near the skating rink.

Brass band Guerilla Fanfare will lead a merry procession starting at 5 p.m. outside Carly’s Boutique, at which time businesses will turn their holiday lights on.

“The Olde Town Tree Lighting is always one of our most popular annual events,” Hengstler said. “The amount of community support for this event is always incredible, and in turn the Olde Town Arvada BID has continued to invest in making the

Simpson wins Arvada mayoral race Davis wins at large, Ambrose wins District 2, Fifer wins District 4

For the first time in 12 years, Arvada has a new mayor.

Lauren Simpson— formerly the District 2 councilmember — bested John Marriott by a few hundred votes to win the mayor’s seat, according to results posted on Nov. 8.

As of 11 a.m. on Nov. 8, 99% of ballots had been counted. As of that count, Simpson had received 22,267 votes, while Marriott had received 21,891.

This year’s election will see Ar-

vada elect its first new mayor in 12 years, as longtime mayor and city councilmember Marc Williams is term-limited.

Both Marriott and Simpson are sitting city councilmembers, with Marriott representing District 3 for 10 years and Simpson coming up on the end of her first term as District 2’s representative.

Marriott called Simpson early on Nov. 8 to concede and congratulate her on her victory. Williams also called Simpson to congratulate her.

Simpson is the first elected female mayor in Arvada’s history.

Marriott will continue to serve on council as the District 3 representative for the next two years.

“I am so excited and grateful for this opportunity,” Simpson said. “I am thankful for my constituents, my family, and my team. I look for-

ward to earning the trust of this city; everybody who voted for me and everybody who did not. I am going to be the mayor for all Arvadans.

“I can’t wait to get to the new councilmembers seated and get to work,” Simpson continued. “One of the things that’s always given my comfort in this race was knowing that whoever won, the city would be in good hands. I look forward to working with John in the next two years on council and doing a lot of great work.

Local election officials have said that a final count isn’t expected until Nov. 8 or later.

Born and raised in Arvada, Marriott is the proprietor of Larson’s Ski and Sport in Wheat Ridge, and has credited his upbringing in the Arvada community for his successes in life. During his time as a

city councilmember, Marriott has advocated for the city’s government to focus on infrastructure, public safety and housing.

Simpson moved to Arvada over a decade ago and works in diplomacy for the Canadian government — a role she says will help her if elected to the mayor’s office. Simpson’s time in office has been marked by her engagement in providing aid to communities in need, including victims of the Marshall Fire and Arvada’s first responders.

In District 2, Shawna Amrbose claimed victory over Michael Griffith on Nov. 8 following a tight race. Griffith called Ambrose to concede.

Fifer works as the deputy director of operations for the Colorado Department of Transportation, a role he has said will help address the city’s infrastructure needs.

Fenske notably did not sign Arvada’s code of fair conduct for the campaign trail, making her the only remaining candidate to not pledge to abide by the city’s code. She has a prolific online presence, often using her platform to attack her opponent, city employees and reporters.

Davis said she was confident she’d won the race, but hadn’t heard from Loveridge or Kennedy regarding concessions. Kennedy conceded in a phone call with the Arvada Press.

“I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work for the people of Arvada,” Davis said. “It’s about time we get some stuff done and I think this council will get a lot done.

“I am very stunned but grateful for the kind of outpouring of support I’ve received,” Davis continued.

“I couldn’t have done this without new friends, and I did not know what to expect. The people of Arvada are very warm and genuinely kind.”

Davis has served on a number of Arvada’s committees — including the city’s charter review committee and golf advisory committee. Loveridge is a longtime member of Arvada’s fire board who previously served on the Apex Parks and Recreation District’s Board of Directors.

Kennedy is a real estate agent in the area.

Griffith is the chair of Arvada’s planning commission and has sought election to city council previously, in 2021. Ambrose is a veteran who serves on a number of board and works with nonprofits in the area.

In District 4, Bob Fifer won over Jessica Fenske by the widest margin of the night.

As of Nov. 8, Fifer had received 7,795 votes, while Fenske had received 4,672.

Local election officials have said that a final count isn’t expected until Nov. 8 or later.

Fifer has served as an atlarge city council member for 12 years and is termlimited in that capacity.

Fenske is running as a Libertarian; she is the only candidate for city council this year with a stated party affiliation.

David Jones has served as Arvada’s District 4 since 2015. Jones did not seek reelection this year.

While there have been a few speed bumps over the years — Pyatt and a student were rear-ended on Colfax Avenue once — Pyatt always tried to check in with students when he would see them and see how driving was going. The student who was driving when they were rearended ended up sending his own son to Pyatt when it was time for him to learn to drive.

Jim Biddle, a fellow driving instructor with Pyatt, said Pyatt has taught thousands of local teenagers to drive over the years.

“His business has had such a tremendous impact on so many kids in the Arvada area,” Biddle said. “I’ve been at it for

“You can’t bring up Arvada Driving School without somebody saying, ‘That’s where I got my license,’ or ‘that’s where my kids got their licenses,’” Biddle continued.

When asked what more people should know about driving, Pyatt said it was crucial to make other cars on the road aware of your existence and be looking down the road.

“One thing I think is really important is the idea of ‘see and be seen,’” Pyatt said.

“Make sure others see you, you don’t want to be in the blind spot. Look up the road; not up at the front of the car.”

Pyatt, who just turned 75, said he plans to spend time with his family in retirement.

State Senator Zenzinger announces bid for Jefferson County Commission Term-limited Zenzinger vying for seat up for grabs following KraftTharp’s announcement that she would not seek re-election

Colorado State Senator Rachel Zenzinger announced that she will be running for a seat on the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners following the news that County Commissioner Tracy Kraft-Tharp will not seek reelection.

Zenzinger, an Arvada resident who has represented State Senate District 19 for eight years and is now term-limited from holding that office again, announced her candidacy for county commissioner on Nov. 9.

District 19 covers parts of Arvada and Westminister.

After being elected to Arvada’s city council in 2008, Zenzinger was appointed to the state senate in 2013 following the resignation of Evie Hudak, whose campaign Zenzinger managed.

In 2016, Zenzinger was re-elected to the state senate.

In 2023, Zenzinger — a Democrat — crossed party lines to work with District 23 State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyerto remove upzoning provisions from a proposed land use reform bill championed by Colorado Democrats. The bill did not pass during the 2023 legislative session.

Zenzinger said she felt the county commission would be a logical next step to continue her public service.

“This seems like the next best opportunity for me to apply my skills in service to the community,” Zenzinger said. “Honestly that’s what it’s all about. I get huge satisfaction from serving the people of Jefferson County and wherever people can benefit most from my emphases on transparency and accessibility.”

Kraft-Tharp announced that she would not be seeking re-election on Nov. 8.

Candidates Michelle Applegate and Erin Kenworthy have won two open school board seats by 58.41% and 42.15%, according to unofficial election results. With 99.2% of the ballots of the county’s ballots counted, it’s unlikely either candidate could lose their lead.

Applegate had 103,692 votes for

the District 3 seat, representing portions of Wheat Ridge, Arvada and north-central Lakewood. Kenworthy had 73,741 votes for the District 4 seat, representing central/south-central Lakewood and Edgewater.

In District 3, Applegate led her opponent Thomas Wicke by nearly 17 percentage points and 30,000 votes.

While in District 4, Kenworthy led her opponents Amara Hildebrand and Joel Newton by approximately 14,500 and 31,900 votes.

“We are grateful for the support of our Jeffco community in our efforts to join the Jeffco School Board,” Applegate said. “Our students deserve leadership that will work collaboratively to ensure that they have safe, thriving schools, supported educators and staff, and learning opportunities that meet their strengths

and interests as they prepare to enter college or the workforce.”

Kenworthy also said she appreciates the support she received from educators, staff and the community.

“I’m looking forward to working with other elected officials to address the needs of all Jeffco school communities. Educating our students is a team effort, and Michelle and I are excited to be a part of that team, and look forward to joining current board members Paula Reed, Mary Parker and Danielle Varda, and working with Superintendent Tracy Dorland, to keep Jeffco moving forward,” Kenworthy said.

Applegate and Kenworthy received support from the Jefferson County Education Association, the district’s teacher’s union. “We are

Pay tribute to 10th Mountain Division at History Colorado

T

here are all kinds of stories that get forgotten in the fog of war, stories that need to be retold to give those who served the respect they deserve.

That’s the ethos behind Winter Warriors, the History Colorado Center’s,1200 Broadway in Denver, latest exhibition, which is a tribute to World War II’s 10th Mountain Division — the first American troops specifically trained for mountain warfare.

“Winter Warriors isn’t just about combat in World War II, it’s also a story of creativity, resilience, ingenuity and the human condition,” said Dr. Chris Juergens, Head of Curatorial Services and Anschutz Curator of Military History at History Colorado, in a provided statement.

“This exhibition puts a human face on the inhumanity of war, and highlights the price of freedom that US servicemen and women continue to be willing to pay on behalf of their fellow citizens.”

The exhibit opened on Veterans Day and truly takes an expansive and intimate look at the division, from their training at Camp Hale in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains through their breakthrough against the Nazi German Army in the mountains of Italy. The division paid the ultimate price during its time in the fight — about one-third of its members were wounded or killed.

a collection largely donated by veterans of the unit and maintained by History Colorado and the Denver Public Library — and features some neverbefore-seen items.

Some of the special items on display include

• A fez taken from Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini’s Italian villa when it was occupied by American troops in 1945.

• The bow and arrows used by one of the division’s archers.

• The uniforms worn by soldiers in training and in combat — as well as those worn by the Women’s Army Corps at Camp Hale and Red Cross volunteers in Italy.

• Pieces of art constructed, carved, and etched by soldiers at Camp Hale and on the front lines.

The aim of the exhibit is visitors come away with a greater appreciation of a story they may have never heard before.

“This is a chance for visitors to embark on a multi-sensory journey that explores the history of the 10th Mountain Division from its origins to its combat service in more detail than ever before seen in an exhibition,” Juergens stated. “Even those

There is a critical need for veteran mental health care

t’s time that we need to amplify our voices to ensure that veterans and their families have access to necessary mental health care. We must continue to raise awareness of suicide prevention and prevention resources.

Suicide is a national health crisis in the U.S., with veterans having a higher-than-average rate. Veterans can suffer from traumatic brain injuries and post traumatic stress, as well as other issues such as medical conditions, unemployment,housing and

We have heard about the 22 veteran’s lives lost each day.

However, according to the National Veterans Foundation, the number of veteran suicides is more likely 24-25 or more a day, translating to over 9,000 former service members

each year who are lost to suicide. The rate of active-duty suicides has been increasing over the last five years. It is important to note that 71% of Veteran suicides are by a firearm. It is vital that we also provide a focus on substance abuse.

What is one way you can actively help with prevention? The Senate recently passed a resolution designating Nov. 12, 2023 as National Warrior Call Day. It is a call to action for the public and those that served, to reach out and connect with other

history and cooking – she made a mean apple pie. Karen was a life-long Methodist and served her church teaching Sunday School, leading United Methodist Women, and singing in her beloved choirs.

Karen is survived by her loving husband Gene; daughter Kara; son Kevin & wife Kelly; and grandchildren Brent and Riley.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Maurice.

Services were held at Arvada United Methodist Church on November 9th.

LIFE Local artists express themselves through forms of metal, precious gems, unique designs

The heat of the torch, the smell of pickling solution, the sound of metal on a mandrel and the look of a completed piece are common aspects silversmiths and jewelers in the Denver metro area enjoy about their craft.

Sarah DeAngelo Jewelry: “Southwest, feminine, natural and detailed”

For Englewood business owner and professional jeweler Sarah DeAngelo, these aspects of the silversmithing system are elements she loves, but they come secondary in her personal process.

“I am obsessed with stones and the history of how a stone is formed and how it’s literally the only one in the world like it,” DeAngelo said.

She said taking a unique “peace of the Earth” and “turning it into this beautiful treasured something that makes somebody feel more beautiful” is her favorite part of the craft.

Originally from Los Angeles, DeAngelo began her career in 1997 after a terrible encounter with a rude customer. DeAngelo said she quit her job and the very next day began selling her pieces door-todoor at different businesses.

“I walked out the door and then the next morning I went around with my little trays of jewelry to a bunch of stores and I got two retail

stores that first morning and that sent me on a totally different path,” DeAngelo said.

DeAngelo currently has a retail store and studio at 16 E. Girard Ave. in Englewood.

She describes her styles as “Southwest, feminine, natural and detailed.”

“I make mostly sterling silver.

They’re usually hand stamped using Navajo stamps that I buy from the Navajo artists themselves and then (I use) unique gemstones that I literally search the world for,” DeAngelo said.

DeAngelo moved into her current location after outgrowing her last studio and while she wasn’t looking for retail, she’s happy she found it and she loves the connections she forms with people.

DeAngelo is an established artisan in the industry and she said she was featured in the Sundance Catalog. She said that was a dream goal for her and her work is sold in about 50 stores across the country.

She said the jewelrymaking community is vast in Colorado because in her experience people seem to appreciate and value homemade items.

DeAngelo makes all sorts of pieces including rings, earrings and necklaces but she loves making earrings the most because they’re her favorite type of jewelry to wear.

DeAngelo said making a delicate piece can be very meticulous and detail-oriented.

“It’s harder than it looks…and it’s very exact,” DeAngelo said.

White is also enjoying the process of building her own business and finding a balance between her two worlds.

White said her specialties in jewelry making are stone setting and intricate stamping work and making things that “excite people and offend them too.”

Originally from New Jersey, White moved to Colorado about seven years ago and is now based in Boulder. White sells her pieces in Denver at markets and in galleries.

White said she was “stone obsessed” as a teenager. “I was collecting raw stones and I actually started wire wrapping and making mainly pendants and rings out of copper and brass,” White said.

During her senior year in high school, White said she was supporting herself, and while she enjoyed making her pieces, she was also selling them as a means of survival.

For White, the best aspect of jewelry making, which she has been doing for about nine years, is that it’s a three-dimensional art form.

“I really love that metal feels like a resource that I can time and time again manipulate,” White said. “It feels like it can be recycled and repurposed. It feels like there is always a story to any jewelry pieces and anything metal-related.”

When she makes a piece, White said she notices a correlation between her mental state and the process.

The silversmith said she will start her process off with a “ceremony” whether it’s making a cup of coffee, smoking herbs or cannabis or saying a prayer.

“Jewelry making is like putting a little piece of my soul and body energetics into something that someone’s going to wear forever,” White said.

White describes her jewelry as different, unique and bold.

“I would say my jewelry has a core theme of being alternative,” White said. “I definitely dabble in everything from being edgy punk to almost like biker babe to boho flowy (and) gem-centered.”

White said people enjoy her jewelry which she sells through Instagram, on her website and in five

stores in Denver and two in New Jersey.

White joined DeAngelo’s studio about three months ago and enjoys executing DeAngelo’s style of wire wrapping and knotting.

“What’s cool is I feel like I am honing a lot of my more nitty gritty skills,” White said. “Just making my things look nicer, cleaner, production style and mass quantity.”

In her home studio of organized chaos, however, with her own production assistant and canine companion Dobby, White said she’s a “one-man show.”

“I move all over the place. I change things. I do have a tendency to go in between projects,” White said.

White said she believes she’s “creating magic” in her studio.

“I feel like I am working with my hands and get to view magic by the end. I feel like I am an alchemist.

I feel like I am connecting to the Earth,” White said.

Michelene Berkey: “Not for everyone”

Michelene Berkey is a metalsmith who has made jewelry for a large portion of her life and works from her home studio.

Based in Evergreen, Berkey said she designs and makes silver jewelry with high-carat gold accents, gemstones and different kinds of pearls.

Originally from New York, the 73-year-old said she has had an interest in jewelry making since she was child.

“My grandfather would go to the jewelry exchange in New York and bring home things wrapped up in little pieces of tissue paper and rubber bands,” Berkey said. “I remember standing at the table watching him unwrap these things and just being fascinated with jewelry.”

She attended California State of Long Beach, learned her techniques and “never stopped making (jewelry) and designing it.”

When she was in California, Berkey said she worked in various jewelry shops in the late 1970s and then she moved to Colorado. She said she didn’t have any jewelry connections and took a break from the craft profession to own and operate her own wallpaper and paint business.

Berkey said she returned to full time metalsmithing in 2000.

“The jewelry that I make is not traditional jewelry. It’s more what they call art jewelry,” Berkey said. “I know how to make traditional jewelry…

That’s what I was trained to do but the jewelry that I am making now is made from little sections of cottonwood twigs and just natural things that I find.”

Berkey said the traditional process consists of a metalsmith making a piece out of wax, plastering it and then placing it in a “burnout” kiln where the wax is melted away.

“What’s left is the void of that particular piece that you’re making and then when you’re ready to actually do the casting you melt your metal and you pour it in and it fills in all of those places where the wax had been originally,” Berkey said.

She siad she wants her pieces to have a lot of texture.

“It’s an interesting process. The casting is the same as manufacturers would use to make anybody’s traditional wedding ring,” Berkey said.

“In my case I am actually burning away the twigs because they burn away just the same as a wax.”

Berkey said her work is “not for everyone” but those who love it have responded well to her creations.

“The more people have seen it and understood that it’s silver and it’s made from the twigs they’re really fascinated with that,” Berkey said.

Berkey sells her work in galleries and she attends various shows throughout Colorado and other states.

Denver Jewelry Studio: A place to learn

Berkey is always willing to learn, and said she has attended the Denver Jewelry Studio in Littleton and taken classes in different techniques.

The studio has various levels of classes taught by many different instructors and managed carefully by studio owner Judy Brown.

“Our studio we call it a maker space. It’s basically for people who have no experience at all in metal smithing or they’re professionals and they’re looking to learn a new technique,” Brown said.

Located at 8392 South Continental Divide Road, Unit 104 in Littleton, Brown said Denver Jewelry Studio is open daily, except on Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

cluding Brown and 30 contract instructors who travel from all over the country to hold classes.

Brown said she purchased the studio from the previous owners in 2018 after teaching there.

“I am a retired state auditor for the state of Texas and Colorado and I needed a creative outlet,” Brown said.

Brown loves “the endless learning” of metalsmithing.

Brown said her style of jewelry is more natural, which was what she was interested in exploring.

“For somebody that’s a numbers cruncher I found that I gravitate to the organic because it gave me so much more freedom and a lot of times it mimics nature,” Brown said.

“I am always fascinated with not only textures but colors that we find in natural rocks and tree bark.”

Brown said her primary technique to do and teach is cuttlebone casting.

“It’s a very old technique. They use the cuttlefish. I learned that one in 2007 and I just gravitated to it because I love the texture that you find in that,” Brown said.

Brown said she was developing her own style to the technique by making the casting thinner which wasn’t common. This she said is how she also entered the world of teaching.

“I love teaching because I love to see people learning to be creative. I think being creative feeds our souls,”

Brown said. “All of us need that in our lives in whatever form we have whether it’s cooking or painting.”

Brown said for those looking to venture into metal smithing the studio recommends that they take the 30-hour Metalsmithing course and then go from there. She said information on classes can be found on the studio’s website.

She said people will learn the basics including sawing techniques, filing, hammering and setting stones.

“For us teaching the beginning students all of these techniques they don’t have to buy a lot of equipment to get started at home and they can really express their creativity,” Brown said.

Denver Jewelry Studio also offers Open Studio where artisans can pay a monthly fee to utilize its tools.

New Denver resident and jewelry maker Jenny Foulkes said she recently moved to Colorado and found the studio.

“I needed bench space because my studio is not set up in my home and (Brown) has all the tools, all the solder stations and they’re open all day,” Foulkes said. “I like the warm welcoming atmosphere.”

Miro Jewelers: A family owned business

Maira Miro, marketing and supplies of Miro Jewelers, said her family has been in the jewelry-making business for four generations.

“We’re a custom fine jewelry store.

We do retail and manufacturing,” Miro said.

Located at 6750 S. Emporia St. in Centennial, Miro said the family opened their retail space 15 years ago.

Miro said both her father and her brother are jewelers and the family owns a factory in Lebanon, which is where the business began.

The family opened their current location in 2017 and Miro said her father attended college in Colorado and wanted to return.

For Miro, the best aspects of what she does are the custom pieces the business creates and seeing it journey over the last several years.

“It’s just the custom part of it and being able to take something that has been in our family for a long time and evolve it over time,” she said.

Miro explained the business has evolved from bench jewelry to manufacturing and retail.

She said they make everything from wedding bands to engagement rings to necklaces to earrings.

“The nice thing about custom is you can work with any style because you’re creating it all,” she said. “It’s not like you’re a brand that you have specific styles that you’re working around.”

While versatile in design, Miro said she would describe the company’s pieces as classic and trendy.

Miro said she is not a jeweler but she works on the back end of the business in purchasing and finance.

“I like that it’s a family business that we’ve grown over the generations and we will have for future generations too,” she said.

Three holiday performances are coming to the Lakewood Cultural Center

Lakewood Cultural Center offers three upcoming holiday events for the whole family. On Nov. 30, Kat Edmonson comes to town with “Holiday Swingin’.” Edmonson is a jazz vocalist who sings the classics and her holiday original songs. According to the Cultural Center website, Edmonson’s show also includes some storytelling, musings and humor.

On Dec. 2-3, Colorado’s Stocking Stuffers Troupe comes to town, featuring three well-known acoustic singers and storytellers. Mary Huckins, Jon Chandler and Ernie Martinez join the troupe for a holiday show filled with Americana music and vocals.

Just days before Christmas, The Queen’s Cartoonists bring a different sort of show in “Holiday Hurrah: Yule Love It!” The band plays classic cartoon music synced with projections from the original cartoon.

Join the Jeffco Open Spaces fall and holiday events

The Jefferson County Open Spaces recently announced three events to celebrate fall and the holidays.

They are designed for all ages and take place throughout November and December.

The Nature Journaling Club is taking over Lookout Mountain with “Painting the Colors of Nature.” It takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center at 910 Colorow Road in Golden.

Let the little kids learn about owls with “Preschool Nature Nuts: Whooo’s There?” The learning session about the nocturnal birds is for ages 3 to 5 with an adult present.

There are two sessions, from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Nov. 18 at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center.

Then the whole family can get in on holiday crafting at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center. There are four sessions over two days. The crafting is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Save the dates for the holiday lights

Both Lakewood and Wheat Ridge have announced their holiday lighting celebrations.

“Lakewood Lights” is set for 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Dec . 1 at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park 801 S Yarrow St, Lakewood. The mayor and city council will be there to celebrate after flipping on the lights for the start of the season.

Then, take a stroll through Belmar Park to see the lights, take the kids to see Santa, or take a minute to create an ornament for your home tree. The event is free and open to the public.

The city of Wheat Ridge will light up the city in a celebration that takes place from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 at The Green, 7101 W. 38th Ave, Wheat Ridge. Join city officials and neighbors for refreshments, caroling, carriage rides and other holiday activities. The tree lighting is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. The event is free to the public.

Just as people say it takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a village to prepare for people’s twilight years.

Whether you are a senior citizen or you are taking care of your parents who are aging, it’s time to start planning now, according to Morgan Jenkins with the Colorado Placement and Referral Alliance.

“Make sure your family knows what you want,” Jenkins said, who spoke at a town hall meeting on aging on Nov. 4 in Evergreen. “If you want to age at home, what does that look like? If you can’t stay at home, where do you want to live?”

While those discussions may be difficult, they need to happen sooner rather than later, so a plan is in place. Then the family needs to discuss what triggers moving forward with the plan, she said at the town hall organized by Jefferson County commissioners and state legislators representing the foothills.

Older adults can start now by downsizing items in their homes, so that work isn’t left to their children or strangers, Jenkins said.

“Aging is like a team sport,” Jenkins said. “If you don’t have a team through your family, you need to create one elsewhere so you are cared for.”

Finding trusted support services for aging adults is important because that is the age group continuing to grow in Colorado and Jefferson County, according to state demographer Elizabeth Garner, who provided slides showing data on Colorado and Jefferson County population projections. State Sen. Tammy Story discussed the information Garner provided.

The population in Jefferson County is declining and fewer people are moving here. Garner estimates that by 2030, the only age group growing in Jefferson County will be those 65 and older with a slight increase in those 18 to 24.

Story said aging impacts everything: housing, the labor force, schools, services and more, and

two years ago, Jeffco lost more population than any other county in Colorado.

Jenkins told attendees that the state is working to create a more robust system for vetting services for older adults. In the meantime, the Colorado Placement and Referral Alliance helps families feel protected as they make choices, so they are not exposed to predatory agencies.

“Our organization stands shoulder to shoulder with you when you are making choices,” she said.

Sherrie Bonham with the Colorado Assisted Living Association suggested that families talk with organizations like Jenkins’ because they try to match family needs with resources, and they have information so families know who to trust.

Karen Moldovan with AARP in Colorado told attendees that AARP does more than just advocate for seniors on the local, state and federal levels. Many people already know about AARP’s income-tax preparation and driver-safety programs.

The organization also hosts inperson and virtual classes on everything from meal planning to yoga. Among the most popular are programs on setting up smart TVs and organizing digital photos, she said.

She also explained the Wish of a Lifetime program that grants seniors their wishes. She told of one Colorado woman who wanted to learn to ride a bicycle, and AARP reached out a coach for cycling great Lance Armstrong, and he taught the woman to ride.

Ron Isaacson with the Jefferson County Cultural Council said many arts and cultural organizations are developing programs for older adults such as art therapy, working with those with Alzheimer’s disease and more.

“The arts community understands (the population is aging), and groups are forming to help the aging population through the arts,” Isaacson said.

Dakota Ridge football advances to 4A quarterfinals

LAKEWOOD — Playoff football in November always brings out the nerves.

However, Dakota Ridge senior quarterback Blake Palladino turned those jitters into a fourtouchdown performance Friday night at Jeffco Stadium as the No. 7-seeded Eagles defeated No. 10 Thomas Jefferson 52-28.

“He (Palladino) was really nervous. I haven’t really seen him get nervous. He was wound up all day,” Woitalewicz said of his quarterback. “I kept telling him to calm down. Take a deep breath and relax.”

Palladino had a pair of rushing touchdowns (4 and 9 yards), along with first-half touchdown passes to senior Walker Moench and sophomore Landon Kalsbeck.

“I just trust my team and I know everyone had everyone’s back,” Palladino said. “Everything will work out.”

Dakota Ridge jumped out to a quick 17-0 lead early in the second quarter. Junior Jack Seidel kicked a 24-yard field to cap off the opening drive for the Eagles.

Palladino finished another scoring drive with a 4-yard touchdown run with 27 second left in the first quarter to push the lead to 10-0. Palladino went to the air for the Eagles’ next score with a 30yard touchdown pass to Moench to make it a 17-0 lead with 10:37 left in the second quarter.

Thomas Jefferson’ defense gave the Spartans life with a 6-pick. Palladino’s screen pass was intercepted by senior Xavier Allen at the Eagles’ 1-yard line to give the Spartans a defensive score.

Senior quarterback Meech Haralambopoulos pulled Thomas Jefferson without 17-14 with a 27yard touchdown pass to senior Daren Sacha with 55.2 seconds left before halftime.

However, there was enough time on the clock for Dakota Ridge to drive 80 yards in less than a minute to make it a 24-14 lead at halftime. Palladino hit Kalsbeck near the Eagles’ sideline and the sophomore did the rest dodging a tackler on the way to a 34-yard touchdown with 18 second left before halftime.

“We practice 2-minute drills all the time. We are good on 2-minute drills,” Palladino said. “We just now how to move the ball.”

TJ (10-2 record) came into the game with a pair of 1,000-yard rushers. Haralambopoulos and running back Jake Tapia had combined for more than 2,600 yards on the ground for the Spartans.

“Our goal going in was to get them (TJ) behind the chains,” Woitalewicz said. “They made a couple of plays in the pass game, but that it’s what they want to do. To get them in second and third down and long situations is what we wanted to do.”

Moench had a huge tackle on Tapia for a 4-yard loss with the Spartans getting to midfield on the first drive of the second half. TJ’s drive eventually stalled and the Eagles (8-3) scored pushed their lead to 38-14 by the end of the third quarter with touchdown runs by Palladino and Kalsbeck.

“I was just doing what my team wanted me to do,” Moench said of the big stop on Tapia. “We have been waiting all night for a big hit on him. I got the job done.”

It got a little sloppy with plenty of penalties in the second half on both sides. Senior Stephen Price had a 6-yard touchdown run and Kalsbeck had his third touchdown of the night on a 55-yard run in the final minutes.

Dakota Ridge will face No. 2 Erie in the 4A quar-

terfinals next week. The Tigers shutout No. 15 Rampart 52-0 in another second-round game Friday night.

“You play a team like Erie who we will probably get next week it is going to be a long day,” Woitalewicz said of the second-half penalties. “If we can convert and not have penalties we’ll be in good shape.”

Palladino doesn’t mind being the underdog next week against Erie.

“We know we are a great team,” Palladino said.

“We are on a roll with five wins in a row now. We’ll try to make it six next week.”

“The special thing (at Loveland) is we’re not a ski resort, we’re a ski area. When you go to Loveland, you feel like family, not a number at a regular resort, and we try to keep lift passes financially affordable,” Schaefer said.

“We had some curveballs thrown at us with the warm weather, but we’re ready to turn on the lifts for the 2023-24 season,” Goodell said.

Early season lift tickets are available at $119 for adults and
