Last year there were over 160 terrorists’ attacks at U.S. electrical substations etc. Causing “temporary” power delays. The attacks were a 70% increase from prior year. The first quarter of this year’s attacks were up another 50% over last year’s first quarter. Were they practicing? The Arvada PD and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies now have electrical substations under watch. I wonder if the terrorists are waiting for America to be in a deep freeze and then do a simultaneous nationwide attack. Just a theory.

Crews work to finish bulk of Ralston Road work before cold, completion date moved up Majority of paving to be finished by end of year, closures to become less frequent

Weeks after an update that revealed that work on the Ralston Road widening project had been delayed by a few months, crews have expedited work in an effort to get back to the original timeline, Arvada’s Communications Manager

for Infrastructure Katie Patterson said.

The project — which seeks to widen Ralston Road by two feet on each side and widen the median — was initially slated for completion in December 2023 but was purportedly delayed until spring 2024 due to the discovery of soft soil and unusually heavy rains.

However, crews have been able to “push a bunch of the work forward,” according to Patterson, getting the project back on track to be mostly completed by the end of 2023.

“Crews have worked really hard to get the work done,” Patterson said.

“They’ve finished the top lift of paving; all the paving work is done. The

purpose is to push the timeline forward before it was too cold to pave in the winter.”

Lane striping began on Nov. 1, according to Patterson, who said that the majority of road closures — especially those on Ammons, Alison, Zephyr and Yarrow — would abate in the coming weeks.

She continued to say that sporadic closures for easement work would continue. Yukon Street will have one more scheduled closure this winter for sewer line work.

Patterson also said that while most of the paving would be finished by the new year, landscaping and concrete work would continue into spring.

“It will feel substantially complete by the end of the year,” Patterson said. “With the exception of medians, the roadwork will be done.

There will still be lane closures, but much smaller sections than what people have been experiencing.”

Residents will see the results of the bond project by that time, Patterson said.

“Hopefully we will have a wonderful corridor for folks that’s been improved thanks to the bond measure they voted on,” Patterson said.

Here Are Some Ideas for the ‘Adaptive Reuse’ of Denver’s Empty Office Buildings

The Denver Post reported last week that Denver’s downtown office vacancy rate was 30.6% (citywide it was 22.9%) as of Sept. 30th, according to CBRE. Meanwhile, the national office vacancy rate was being reported by Cushman Wakefield at 19.4%, up from 17.2% for the same quarter a year ago.

Meanwhile, Denver (like the rest of the nation) has a shortage of residential space, and much has been written about converting office space to residential space.

That has been undertaken here and there, but I read an Oct. 30th online article about “adaptive reuse” of empty office buildings that highlighted many other possibilities and cited several exciting projects.

The article, from nicenews.com, had the headline, “Vertical and Visionary: Empty Office Buildings That Transformed into Urban Farms, Schools, Hotels and More.”

Here are the projects cited in the article. First, a warehouse previously used for storing paper documents in Arlington, VA, was converted in 2022 by

Area 2 Farms into an organic farm growing fresh herbs, veggies and microgreens for 100 households. These products are produced using “a multi-level, vertical, conveyor beltstyle farm [that] replicates a plant’s day cycle.”

Close by, in Alexandria, VA, a building previously used by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was converted by Balian Springs into an “immersive wellness retreat” with saunas, lounges, fitness rooms, a garden, and a rooftop infinity pool.

In Falls Church, VA, another suburb of Washington, a 5-story office building was converted in 2014 to an elementary school for arts and sciences.

In Louisville, Kentucky, a 19th Century warehouse used to store bourbon and tobacco was converted to a 91-room hotel, an “acclaimed restaurant,” and an art museum celebrating the building’s origins. Hotel guests are treated to a nightly toast called “Nightcap at the Museum” with complimentary bourbon.

In Brooklyn, NY, a former garment factory was converted into a vertical “neighborhood farm” called Farm.One. It provides fresh produce and herbs for high-end restaurants. According to the article, “Now, the farm features a 1,500square-foot showroom and hosts public tours in addition to chef pop-ups, cooking classes, and private gatherings of up to 70 people.”

There is one conversion from offices to apartments cited in the article—a 28story office building in San Francisco that was converted to 418 apartments, with such amenities as a fitness center,

3D Construction Firm Is Relocating to Colorado On Nov. 5, 2020, and Dec. 15, 2022, I wrote about the use of 3D printing in home construction. (Find those articles at www.JimSmithColumns.com.) Now an Iowa company in that line of work has struck a $4-million deal with the city council of Greeley and the state of Colorado to move its operation to Greeley.

The company is Alquist 3D. According to an Oct. 6th press release, they’ll create 79 jobs, many of which will be filled through a partnership with a local community college to create training courses that provide certificates in the skills needed to manufacture and operate Alquist’s equipment.

“There is nowhere else on the planet where so much is happening all in one place to move structural 3D printing forward,” Alquist’s chairman was quoted as saying at a ceremony attended by Gov. Jared Polis and Sen. Michael Bennet.

An early 20th-Century candy factory in LaCrosse, WI, was converted to a 67room boutique Charmant Hotel, which honors its past with a 24-hour “sweets bar” serving handmade chocolates.

In Portland, ME, the former office of

Maine’s largest newspaper, the Portland Press-Herald, was converted to a boutique hotel called, appropriately, The Press Hotel. Each of its 110 guest rooms has a vintage-style journalist desk, and an art installation in the building features 62 vintage typewriters.

If you know of any local conversions of commercial space to other uses, let me hear of them so I can share them with my readers.

Appraising High-Performance Homes Is Still Deficient It’s a sad fact that sustainability improvements which homeowners make on their homes are inadequately valued by home buyers — but also by the appraisers tasked with assigning a value to the home for buyers and their lenders.

Even with today’s greater appreciation of energy efficiency, my advice to homeowners considering the installation of solar panels or other sustainable features is to do it only if they don’t plan on selling their home anytime soon. Some studies have shown that such improvements (when owned, not leased) add to the value of a home, but, sadly, most buyers are still more interested in kitchen and bathroom fixtures than energy efficiency.

Also, not all listing agents are knowledgeable about solar power, heat pumps and other features which should be selling points for their listings.

Appraisers, like real estate agents, need to become competent in the value of sustainable improvements. They are obligated not to practice outside their areas of competency. An appraiser is obligated to have familiarity with the type of house he or she appraises, including one with extensive “green” features.

Explaining the Recent Court Verdict on Agent Commissions

As I explained in my October 26th column (which you can read online at JimSmithColumns.com), the National Association of Realtors and several big real estate firms were facing a class action lawsuit from home sellers who felt it was unfair that they, as sellers, had to pay the commissions earned by buyers’ agents. In my column I explained that it’s the listing agent who shares his/her commission with the agent who produces the seller, although the settlement statements reflect the fact that the funds are coming from the seller. On that basis, I thought the lawsuit would fail, but eight citizen jurors didn’t appreciate that distinction and voted in favor of the plaintiffs and voted for a $1.78 billion fine.

NAR and the other defendants are appealing, and we are not being told to change our practices at this time. As has always been true, our sellers can, in the listing agreement, sign off on how much of our listing commission should be offered to buyers’ agents.

Jeffco clerk holds Bagels and Ballots events to promote voting Locals treated to free breakfast, coffee in advance of Nov. 7 election

In an effort to promote voting in this year’s municipal election, Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder Amanda Gonzalez and her team got out in the community with a couple of Bagels and Ballots events to answer questions and raise awareness.

The first iterations of these such events — held at the Belmar Library on Oct. 27 and Arvada City Hall on Nov. 1 — were initiated thanks to the clerk and recorder’s manager of community engagement; the first time

the office has had someone specifically designated in that role, according to Gonzalez.

Residents were encouraged to stop by the events, ask questions about voting and turn in ballots early, if they were ready to do so. In return, they were treated to complimentary coffee and bagels.

Gonzalez said the initiative is aimed to encourage early voting, which she said helps gets more accurate totals.

“Voting early is really important because it helps us get more thorough counts on election night,” Gonzalez said. “If you have an emergency, we would never want you to not be able to vote. If there are any issues — like a signature (discrepancy) — if you vote early you have more time to correct it.

We just want to make sure everyone votes and has their ballots counted.”

Gonzalez’s team said that while at-

tendance had been low, many folks incidentally happened upon the event and were excited to learn more.

Gonzalez said she ran for office out of a desire to protect the right to vote and was thrilled to see democracy in action.

“Seeing people who are really excited to participate is why I do this job,” Gonzalez said. “I want to continue to be in the community as much as possible. I don’t want the only place where you can access government to be a large building in Golden; I want to be out where folks are.

“People can vote any way that’s convenient,” Gonzalez continued.

“Most people do ballots, but you can do in person, Spanish ballots are available in person, voting centers will be open.”

Denver’s PlatteForum has more youth internships, will pay them more PlatteForum plans to increase the number of youth it can serve through its ArtLab program. It will go from 40 to 50 interns thanks to a grant from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation.

PlatteForum’s ArtLab is an arts-education internship program for high school teens. It encourages them to engage with social issues and to use their voices to create change.

Interns get the chance to work with experienced professional artists on projects that hone their technical, social/emotional, creative, professional

and academic skills. Additional resources available to each intern include private therapy, tutoring, groceries, case management and access to technology.

The grant will also allow the interns’ hourly stipend to increase from $10 an hour to $11 an hour.

PlatteForum is a Denverbased nonprofit that, in addition to its ArtLab, has an artist residency program. Its art exhibits, performances and special events are always free and open to the public.

Allisha Cody leads a life of service.

The Conifer resident, who is the grants coordinator/grants accountant for the Sheridan School District, also volunteers as the quartermaster for Veterans of For-

eign Wars Post 12009. She believes in helping in the community and helping fellow veterans.

Cody served in the Navy and in the Navy Reserves a year after high school, and she calls that time a great experience where she found camaraderie with fellow soldiers and lifelong friendships. It also taught her independence — taking care of herself and others.

That is the core of the life she leads.

Enlisting

Cody enlisted in the Navy on an impulse a year out of high school in Washington state. She was on academic probation in college and didn’t really know what she wanted to do with her life. A friend suggested they enlist together, and Cody thought, “Why not?”

She became an aviation technician, serving most of her four years in Jacksonville, Florida. After being honorably discharged, she took a five-year break and then enlisted in the Navy Reserves, working primarily as an administrative assistant out of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Buckley Air Force Base. She did one tour in Iraq and left the Reserves in 2011.

She said spending time in Iraq was life-changing and eye-opening.

“After being in Iraq, I don’t take things for granted,” Cody said. “I saw the Iraqis and how little they have, and when I came back to the United States, I saw how much we have. It taught me to live with less and to be very thankful for everything I have because they have nothing.”

Her time in Iraq helped her want to see different perspectives and try to help others even more.

“Being deployed really changes you,” she said.

Involvement in the VFW

After moving to Conifer, she got involved with the VFW post. She called the VFW a place for veterans to meet, get help with things such as benefits and get involved in the community. VFW Post 12009 is known for its monthly community breakfasts, for example.

Cody said she was surprised at the number of veterans living in Conifer and Evergreen, and she hoped the post could reach out to more of them.

Cody serves as quartermaster of VFW Post 12009, saying originally that she’d hold the position for a year. That was 12 years ago.

Being a veteran is different for women than for men, Cody and Kirk Rosa, VFW post commander,

said. They noted that women veterans — ”lady veterans,” as Cody calls them — have served bravely and honorably in the military, too.

Cody said people thank male veterans all the time, but they don’t think about women serving in the military.

“We served and proved ourselves,” Cody said. “In the military, it seemed like I always had to work harder.”

Rosa said he doesn’t look at Cody as a woman veteran.

“We all served,” he said. “We all did what we were ordered to do.

I have nothing but the highest regard for her. It’s hard to be a woman in the military. She’s a veteran just like the rest of us.”

Encouraging others to serve

Cody said she would tell young people — including her daughter — that if they had the opportunity and it was something they wanted to do, serving in the military was a good option.

“It teaches you independence and life skills,” she said.

While Cody is honored to have served her country, she doesn’t think about it often, but that part of her past is always there.

“I’m glad I was part of that elite group” of veterans who served and protected the country, she said.

Her dad served in Vietnam in the Air Force, and she says both of her parents are proud that she enlisted and served.

Celebrating veterans

There’s a difference between the two days that Americans honor veterans, Rosa explained. Memorial Day honors those who died in service. Veterans Day honors people like Cody and her husband, Dave, who also served in the Navy.

The draft was abolished in the United States in 1973, so everyone in the military since then volunteered to serve their country, Rosa said. They served because they wanted to.

“We are not due anything,” Rosa said. “A thank you goes a long way.

Saying thank you for your service means more than anything. …

Had we not done what we did, this country wouldn’t be what it is today.”

In a crowded courtroom in Clear Creek County, a former sheriff ’s deputy and former sergeant entered vastly different pleas to charges associated with the shooting death of Christian Glass.

Former Clear Creek County Sgt. Kyle Gould announced he will plead guilty in the Nov. 2 hearing and agreed to return to court on Nov. 16, when charges will be announced and he will be sentenced, according to Judge Catherine Cheroutes. Gould is charged with criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment.

The details of Gould’s scheduled plea deal with prosecutors are not public, according to the court.

Meanwhile, former Clear Creek County deputy Andrew Buen, who is charged with murder in the 2nd degree, official misconduct and reckless endangerment, entered a plea of not guilty and requested trial by jury through his attorney.

Glass died on the night of June 10-11, 2022, when he was stranded in his car near Silver Plume. He had called 911 for help, saying he was trapped and his car was stuck. Officers asked Glass to leave his car, but he refused in what turned into a long standoff that ended when officers broke the car window and used a Taser on Glass. Buen shot Glass five times, killing him, according to the indictment.

Gould was in contact via cell phone with Buen during the encounter, the indictment states. Buen muted his body-worn camera audio during the cell phone conversation, and the conversation was not recorded, according to the indictment.

“It’s so hard for us,” Sally Glass, Christian’s mother, said outside court following the Nov. 2 hearing. “Those men were responsible for the death of our son. Gould has accepted responsi-

bility, you can see in his face he’s sorrowful.”

The Glass family, however, had harsh words for Buen.

“The other man (Buen) — I don’t know if I can even call him a man — the way he behaved that night was inhuman, abject cruelty to our son,” Sally said in tears. “You hear that not-guilty (plea) and it’s like, Jesus are you kidding me?”

The Glass family attorney, Siddhartha Rathod, added: “Nothing is enough, there is no punishment that will bring Christian back to his parents and that is the only thing that would be justice.”

Defense motions in the Buen case are expected by Nov. 27. Cheroutes wants to know if the defense will request a change of venue in the case and a hearing on any motions filed is set for Dec. 18.

When asked by the judge, prosecutor Stephen Potts said finding a jury pool and the trial itself could take four weeks.

Former Clear Creek County Sheriff Rick Albers retired amid criticism from county commissioners about his deputies’ involvement in Glass’ death

in 2022.

A civil suit awarded a multi-million dollar settlement to the Glass family. Four agencies agreed to share the costs, including the Clear Creek County Sheriff ’s Office. In a court-ordered apology as part of the settlement, Albers placed blame on deputies who “failed to meet expectations.”

During his job interview in October before Clear Creek County Commissioners, interim Sheriff Matthew Harris said he’d seen body camera footage of Glass’ death and believes that first responders, including deputies, lacked patience and understanding.

“It was taking too much time and so you can’t let time drive decision making, to make an awful decision,” Harris told commissioners.

County commissioner Sean Wood said he also watched the body camera footage.

“My reaction was (that) I’ve got to do whatever I can in the time I have left in office to make sure something like that can’t happen again,” he said.“Whoever the next sheriff is, that person is going to have a big responsibility in making sure that whatever reforms need to happen, happen.”

A new study from Portland State University suggests that some of the Mountain West’s most famous glaciers do not qualify as glaciers anymore.

This study defines a glacier as being present for more than 20 years, having an area of at least two football fields (or 0.01 square kilometers), and showing signs of movement.

Without these, it’s just a perennial snowpack or a pile of rocks.

“If we saw crevasses, then we knew it was moving because cracks develop when the ice stresses and strains, said Andrew Fountain, professor emeritus at the university and one of the study’s authors. “Even though the glaciers might have snow, the one that doesn’t move is a snow patch or an ice patch, and the other with crevasses is by definition a glacier.”

Researchers looked at U.S. Department of Agriculture aerial photos taken from 2013 to 2020 of about 4,000 areas, according to Fountain.

They were only able to classify around 1,300 areas as glaciers and 1,200 areas as perennial snowpacks.

St. Mary’s Glacier near Idaho Springs in Clear Creek County, Colorado, is too small and does not meet the 0.01 square kilometer threshold. Taylor Glacier in Rocky Mountain National Park is too rocky and does not have enough snow coverage to be a glacier. Isabelle, Moomaw and Peck Glaciers were all deemed perennial snowpacks.

Other well-known glaciers that didn’t make the cut in the Mountain West were Petersen Glacier in Wyoming and the Grasshopper Glacier in Montana. They don’t believe Idaho has any glaciers.

Their findings were published in Earth System Science Data last month.

Before this study, several paper topographical maps categorized areas as glaciers, but modern satellites and aerial photography hadn’t been used to track changes to them.

Some of these maps were more than 30 years old.

“Glaciers in the western U.S. never had really been properly inventoried,” Fountain said. “As we know, glaciers have changed a lot since then (in 30 years).”

Researchers believe these glaciers are shrinking due to global warming – and possibly wildfires. Additionally, caverns in the glacier created by streamflow underneath can let sunlight in and melt the glacier.

“Smaller glaciers don’t do as well, don’t add as much water,” he said.

“As glaciers shrink, these streams then become more and more susceptible to drought, as well as the surrounding riparian areas and adjacent landscapes, which changes the ecology in these high alpine ar-

eas.”

One solution could be artificial glaciers made by underground pipes that spray like fountains and freeze into a cone shape, which slows the melting. Another is glacier covers, usually made of plastics and fleece, to help insulate a glacier and block the sun.

Fountain said that these “stop-gap measure[s]” are “not going to be of practical value” for the West. Instead, he wants people to focus on getting rid of the carbon dioxide to help slow global warming.

Despite this, there’s good news.

Some glaciers have endured due to their positioning away from the sun and extra shade coming from the shadow of nearby mountains – and if they get more snow than expected, that’s even better. Andrews Glacier in Colorado came to mind as an example.

With plenty of mountain ski areas such as Breckenridge, Vail, Copper Mountain and Keystone, competition for skier dollars is always a challenge,

Schaefer said.

Arapahoe Basin in Dillon claimed the title of first chair of the season on Oct. 29 this year, but most resorts are announcing opening dates through

November. Loveland Ski Area does not yet have an official open date, but it’s coming within the next few weeks, according to Schaefer.

A regular season lift ticket at Loveland is $149 this year for skiers or boarders 15 years and older. For those up to 14 years old, a lift ticket will be $45 and anyone under 5 years old skis free, according to Schaefer.

“The special thing (at Loveland) is we’re not a ski resort, we’re a ski area.

When you go to Loveland, you feel like family, not a number at a regular resort, and we try to keep lift passes financially affordable,” Schaefer said.

A study by RRC Associates, a research company in Boulder, states that Colorado’s ski industry generates $4.8 billion in annual economic output and supports more than 46,000 year-round equivalent jobs.

“Those glaciers in those nice little basins having additional snow either by wind drift, travel, entering, sort of become climate insensitive because these other effects are kind of keeping that glacier intact,” he said.

“All of the glaciers, I think, in the front range should be gone by now, except these additional processes that keep them alive.”

For his next research project, Fountain is trying to quantify how much water and ice has been lost.

South Lakewood Elementary principal takes a spin on ‘Wheel of Fortune’ fostering and adoption, in addition to fulfilling a childhood dream.

He got to celebrate the television debut with his school community on Oct. 26. South Lakewood Elementary had a school-wide watch party.

Romero said the students really got into it.

“They even said, ‘Aw, man,’ when I hit bankrupt,” Romero said. He then gave a talk about the experience. He also told the students how his literacy and vocabulary skills helped him win $7,400.

Eric Romero always dreamed of being on the show “Wheel of Fortune.”

That dream came true recently when Romero, principal at South Lakewood Elementary School, was a contestant on the show.

His journey to “Wheel of Fortune” began this summer when Romero saw a call for contestants and decided it was time to answer. Romero said he was surprised to be selected for the second round, the interviews and then a “meet and greet.” He said the show’s staff helped him create a video introduction.

“They said be yourself and tell what makes you a good contestant,” Romero said. That led the principal and father to share his life with the show. This includes the journey with his husband Peter to start a family.

They have three adopted boys, ages 7, 9 and 13.

“I found out in September that I was selected for Halloween week,” Romero said. He and his family flew to L.A. for the show taping later that month.

Romero said the trip was short, but they got a chance to sightsee in L.A. The episode aired Oct. 24.

Romero said he was proud to share his life with the “Wheel of Fortune” audience. He wants to be a living inspiration for his sons and students.

This is why, in his introduction on the show, Romero spoke about

Romero then encouraged the students to reach for their own dreams.

He told them how “trying new things and stepping outside your comfort level” is what’s needed to fulfill a dream.

“I used to watch ‘Wheel of Fortune’ with my grandmother when I was younger,” Romero said. “I’ve always wanted to be on the show.”

Romero plans to use his winnings to take a vacation with his family.

It’s almost Veterans Day: Here’s what to know about your local American Legion

A

group of 20 officers who served in the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI were asked to suggest ideas on how to improve troop morale.

One officer, Lt. Col. Theodore Roosevelt Jr., proposed an organization of veterans, which we know today as The American Legion.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities. Hundreds of local American Legion programs and activities strengthen the nation one community at a time including American Legion Baseball, one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs and Operation Comfort Warriors, a program supporting recovering wounded warriors and their families. Some other programs include Boys State/Nation, Legion Riders, Homeless Veterans assistance and Youth Cadet Law Enforcement education. The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism.

Wilmore-Richter Post 161

American Legion Post 161, here in Arvada, was named for two local heroes who gave their lives defending our great nation during WWI. Corporal William Wallace Wilmore Jr., an Arvada resident, died in battle on the French Front on Sept. 13, 1918. Private Benjamin A. Richter, a Wheat Ridge resident, was killed in action in France on Sept. 15, 1918. Both were laid to rest in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery in Thiaucourt, France.

American Legion Auxiliary (ALA)

Founded in 1919, the ALA is made up of male and female spouses, grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and direct and adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion. The mission of the ALA is to support The American Legion and to honor the

sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. The ALA is involved in many projects and activities including Girls State/Nation, Troop Welcome Home/Send Off, Troop Care Packages, Blue Star Banners and the Poppy Program just to name a few.

The Poppy

After WWI, the poppy flourished in Europe. Scientists attributed the growth to soils in France and Belgium becoming enriched with lime from rubble left by the war.

From the dirt and mud grew a beautiful red poppy. The poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle. On Sept. 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize soldiers who fought and died during the war. In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion.

Led by the ALA, each year members of The American Legion family distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, military personnel, and their families with medical and financial needs. National Poppy Day is designated the Friday before Memorial Day. Sons of the American Legion (SAL)

Founded in 1932, the SAL is a subsidiary of the American Legion and allows for more membership eligibility. The SAL consists of both veterans and the sons of veterans. Membership is open to men and boys of all ages who are either veterans or whose parents or grandparents are veterans of the US military. The SAL squadron for Post 161 is very ac-

tive in the Arvada community and its main mission is to raise money for local charities, with a focus on veterans and children’s nonprofit organizations. One main fundraising program is Sunday buffet breakfasts held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month offering a variety of traditional and specialty breakfast items. Breakfasts are open to the public and nobody leaves hungry. The largest fundraising event of the year is the Sons of the American Legion Charity Golf Tournament which is held at Lake Arbor every September. The tournament is open to the public and raises several thousand dollars every year for local children’s charities. SAL squadron 161 holds meetings each month on the 2nd Thursday.

American Legion Riders

The Legion Riders were founded in 1993 as an environment where Legion family members could come together to share a common love for motorcycles. An agreement was established to form a central source for the Riders to ensure that chapters formed not as motorcycle clubs, but as Legionnaires and SAL members joining to rise as Legion family.

Currently, over 110,000 American Legion Riders meet in over 2,000 chapters. The Legion Riders support the Community, State and National programs. Riders raise funds for local Childrens Hospitals, Schools, Veterans Home, severely wounded Service Members, and all Veterans.

Trusted and reliable, local newspapers matter to their communities

A recent Gallup study showed that America’s confidence in the national mass media has reached a near-record low. While that’s disturbing, it’s not unexpected. The digital age has brought a barrage of national news sources that are focused on sound bites, opinions, partisan views and a race to push out breaking news, even if it hasn’t been properly fact-checked or vetted. The problem has been exacerbated by social media channels that allow disinformation to be distributed virtually unchecked.

Americans trust local newspapers

However, Americans feel differently when it comes to their local newspaper. According to a 2023 national survey of 5,000 adults, local newspapers are the most relied on and trusted media source of original reporting: more than television and radio, and significantly more than social media. Trust in local newspapers extends across age groups and demographics, as adults of all segments recognize the value of reliable local reporting that newspapers deliver.

And, beyond just trusting the reporting local newspapers provide, Americans recognize how important it is to have a healthy local newspaper in their community. In fact, 74% of all Americans stated that having a newspaper in their community is important for providing them with much needed local news and information. It’s hard to get Americans to agree on anything, but they agree that local newspapers are important.

Local newspapers shine a light on important issues

American’s trust in their local newspaper is not surprising. A local newspaper’s commitment to reporting the news is different than the national mass media. Local newspapers are just that, local, and are staffed with dedicated professional journalists who live and work in the communities they

cover. The issues that are important to the community are also important to local reporters, and that creates a deep accountability to delivering trusted, unbiased news.

Readers and non-readers alike Dean Ridings rely on their local newspaper to shine a spotlight on the issues that matter most to them. From holding local institutions accountable, to reporting on local schools, sports or entertainment for the weekend, local journalists often uncover stories that might otherwise go unnoticed. That local connection instills confidence that the information being delivered is coming from a source that is invested in the health of the community and committed to high standards of journalistic integrity.

The same national study of 5,000 adults found that 60% of Americans use newspaper advertising to help them decide what brands, products and local services to buy. he self-guided audio tour has been common in the art world since the 1950s, but like many other virtual tools, there has been a rise in the popularity of audio tours in other industries due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Audio tours can add extra elements that visitors do not get when walking the areas alone, according to Luna Hernandez, who works in the Dinosaur Ridge welcome center.

“The audio tour definitely gives you more information than if you were to just walk the trail on your own,” Hernandez said. “We do have those outdoor plaques and stuff like that on the trail. So you still get some information when you’re walking it. But with the audio tour, there is a resident geologist who guides you up the ridge and gives you a lot of information.”

Today, it’s not uncommon to plan a full-day trip complete with a tour of any place around the globe. This includes communities in the Denver metro region.

Self-guided tours in the region cover art, like the 40 West ArtLine; local landmarks, like Dinosaur Ridge; and whole natural regions, like the I-70 Audio Tour. The key to finding these tours is deciding what to see, the level of planned involvement and time allotment.

What to see

Art was the original self-guided audio tour and is a popular self-guided tour focus. In Lakewood, the 40 West ArtLine audio tours take participants through the growing arts district. There are three tour options, all narrated by “art advocate and tour guide” Corrine Anderson.

The Grit and Glitter tour is a primer on the importance and legacy of West Colfax. The tour takes listeners through the neighborhoods going toward Aviation Park in Lakewood. The tour gives history and a sort of mini art lecture on the outdoor art, murals and more along the busiest part of the 40 West Art District.

The Art and Leisure Tour begins at Lamar Street Light Rail Station and follows the track through some of Lakewood’s outdoor art, architecture and more. The Art and Leisure Tour also touches on Lakewood’s agricultural heritage before ending at Mountain Air Park.

The Transportation and Art Tour also begins at the Lamar Street Rail Station. It runs along Lamar Street to the 40 West Art District headquarters. The tour takes a historic slant and guides listeners through the history of the area in addition to highlighting the murals and outdoor art along the way.

However, art is not the only focus of guided tours in the area. Take an urban stroll through the history of the Five Points neighborhood with the Five Points Business Dis-

trict Walking Tour. It takes listeners on a reverent tour of Denver’s historic Black neighborhood.

The kids will love the blast to prehistoric Colorado in the Dinosaur Ridge Audio Tour. The tour is packed with dinosaur facts that will almost make the listener forget about the steepness of the 2.5-mile ridge climb.

The Wild I-70 Audio Tour is more of a natural Front Range focus that takes listeners from Golden to Glenwood. This tour is best done by car, bike or motorized vehicle. It’s 144 miles long and talks about wildlife, including historic animal migration facts, in addition to other natural history and environmental facts.

There are other tours like the State Capitol Audio Tours which concentrates on the Capitol building in Denver. The Story Line Audio Tour touches on 15 sites integral to the history of the city of Aurora and Arapahoe County.

What to consider

Choosing a tour can be a chore. There are a few things to consider before deciding, so a little research is required.

Pricing is one issue to consider. Some apps that offer a slew of guided tours also charge up to $50 per person. However, many of the self-guided tours are free to the public.

The 40 West ArtsLine Tours are free, but the Dinosaurs Ridge Tours cost $7 per streaming device.

Also, consider the activity level and time commitment. It can take about 3 hours to complete the Dinosaur Ridge Audio Tour, but there are actual fossils and tracks along the hike. Parts of the ridge itself is a drag mark from beasts that roamed the area millions of years ago, according to the tour.

Only bikes and feet are allowed on the tour, so taking the Dinosaur Ridge tour is much more intense than some other options. There is also the weather and seasons to consider for any outdoor tour. The Wild I70 Tour is a brilliant idea for fall foliage. Also consider the drive in May or June, when the wildflowers are in bloom and the baby animals are about.

Some of the tours, like the ArtLine tours, have chapters so that listeners can schedule accordingly. Be sure to factor in the time of day. Sitting in traffic after an intense hiking tour is tougher than it seems at the beginning of the trip.

Where to go

The research before you go is key. To find the tours, look at the sites for places you wish to visit. Chances are, there is an audio tour that you can preview before embarking.

Several apps exist that compile the audio tours in the area in one place.

However, sometimes the information on the apps is inaccurate and the price higher than the original site requires, so always go to direct websites.

Camp Hale monument celebrates one year Plan to honor Utes, 10th Mountain vets takes shape

Francis Lovett has a vision for Camp Hale, where in 1942 he trained for winter battle in Italy as a 10th Mountain Division soldier.

“It must include recognition, physical recognition, by signage, astute building and careful management so it does not become a scrappy trailer park. It must not become a tourist attraction,” the 101-year-old decorated World War II veteran and lifelong educator told a committee of politicians and tribal leaders last weekend in Vail following a visit to Camp Hale. “It must be aimed to inform the public who may stop by and see how we lived and what we lived, with good signage … that reflects the history of the 10th Mountain Division. All I hope for is true history. Shared history.”

A year after President Joe Biden traveled to Colorado to announce the Camp Hale – Continental Divide National Monument, a plan is taking shape for the historic location.

helping to educate visitors about the 53,804-acre monument, Colorado’s ninth national monument and its first since Browns Canyon in 2015.

The idea is to create a place to learn and remember. A monument that celebrates the Ute tribes that have gathered in the headwaters of the Eagle River atop Tennessee Pass for centuries as well as the 10th Mountain Division soldiers who trained there during World War II and returned to Colorado to seed the country’s vibrant outdoor recreation industry.

prayer in late October as Forest Service officials joined federal, state and local leaders in unveiling the new national monument sign.

“We just ask respectfully, don’t forget us as the Ute people who come from these lands … that were taken from us at one time,” Heart said.

“And educate people, educate people about who we are.”

Colorado rule change would give more universal preschoolers full-day classes

About 3,000 more Colorado 4-year-olds will qualify for free fullday classes through the state’s universal preschool program next year under a draft rule that aims to better serve families in the lowest income bracket.

The proposed change would make 4-year-olds from families with incomes at or below the federal poverty level — about $30,000 a year for a family of four — eligible for full-day preschool at no cost to their families starting next August. This year, many children in this group lost out on tuition-free full-day classes because of a state funding shortfall.

However, if voters approve Prop II on Election Day, the state would get more than $23 million, which could help cover the extra full-day preschool costs next year.

“This rule would provide crucial support to Colorado’s most vulnerable populations,” said Lisa Roy, executive director of the Colorado Department of Early Childhood, in a press release that cited high-quality preschool as a tool against poverty.

Colorado’s $322 million universal preschool program launched in August and offers free half-day preschool to 4-year-olds statewide, with some eligible for full-day classes. Some 3-year-olds also participate.

The proposed rule, announced by the early childhood department, represents the state’s effort to fix a key problem that surfaced last summer during the new preschool program’s tumultuous rollout.

State officials originally planned to give full-day preschool to a wide

swath of 4-year-olds. That group included children with any of five risk factors, including those from lower-income families — defined as households with earnings up to 270% of the federal poverty level, or about $81,000 a year for a family of four. It also included English learners, children with special education plans, those in foster care, and those who are homeless.

But in July, just weeks before the first day of school, thousands of families were blindsided when they learned the state wouldn’t pay for full-day preschool as they’d expected. More families had applied for the program than state officials expected, triggering stricter eligibility requirements for full-day classes.

The longer days were thus offered to a much smaller group: children from families who met the income threshold and had a second risk factor. A group of school districts cited this 11th-hour shift among several grievances in their subsequent lawsuit against the state over universal preschool.

The tighter eligibility rules meant many children with only a single risk factor, including many from very low-income families, were out of luck. In some cases, school districts decided to cover the cost of the extra hours. In others, parents scraped together the money to pay the difference, settled for the free half-day program, or dropped out altogether.

The proposed rule is designed to more carefully target children with the greatest needs, a population that research shows stands to benefit the most from quality preschool.

The rule creates a sixth risk factor — “living in poverty” — that includes any preschooler from a

family living at or below the federal poverty level. These children will then automatically fall into the more expansive “low-income” risk factor group, which includes all low and some middle-income families.

Together, the two risk factors will make children eligible for full-day classes.

About 3,600 or 10% of Colorado’s 37,000 universal preschoolers are getting tuition-free full-day classes this year. That number could jump to about 6,600 next year under the proposed rule, according to state estimates.

With funding for universal preschool partly dependent on how much money the state’s nicotine tax brings in and how many children opt in, there’s still a chance the state could face a funding pinch in future years and limit the number of children who get full-day preschool at no cost to their families. However, the proposed rule would give children from the lowest-income families higher priority for full-day funding than they get now.

In addition, state forecasts on preschool participation and funding for next year indicate there’s enough money to serve the additional 3,000 4-year-olds expected to qualify for

State officials are collecting public comment on the proposed rule at least through Nov. 22, and expect to finalize it by the end of January.

Colorado’s U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse — a Democrat from Boulder who supported the national monument designation — said collaboration will be needed for “keeping the stories of Camp Hale alive and making the case that this incredible part of Colorado history, American history, needed to be preserved.”

“There’s a lot of work to be done and we know this next stage will be just as important as all the stages that preceded it,” Neguse said.

Colorado U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat and longtime champion of protecting Camp Hale, said “learning where we’ve been and heading into the future in a collaborative way … is the opportunity for a better future.”

The White River National Forest is launching a planning process that will take a couple years. There will be public meetings, site visits and formal comment periods so everyone can vet the plan for Camp Hale.

“This is just the beginning of a very involved process,” said Adam Bianchi, the district ranger for the White River National Forest’s Dillon Ranger District, the most trafficked district in the country inside

The forest is a decade into planning a long term restoration project in the headwaters of the Eagle River, which include Camp Hale. The river was straightened to accommodate a warfare training camp for 17,000 soldiers in the early 1940s.

Restoring the river to a more natural state while honoring the legacy of the training ground will require a balancing of cultural, ecological and historical interests, Bianchi said.

new national monument did not come with any additional funds for the White River, which has a budget of around $18 million a year, down from more than $30 million in the late 2000s.

The proclamation that created Camp Hale recognizes “ongoing use of the area for recreation” — noting skiing, hiking, camping and snowmobiling — while urging a management plan that includes “education and interpretive resources” that reflect the area’s Indigenous history and 10th Mountain legacy “while maintaining space for the area’s growing recreation economy.”

The overlapping planning process for the monument and the entire forest will give forest managers the opportunity, Bianchi said, to “protect areas as best we can and

not make it a tourist destination.”

Maybe that will include directing visitors to areas outside the heart of the monument, like on Summit County’s Continental Divide side of the monument in the Tenmile Range, where improved trailheads and access can accommodate more users, Bianchi said.

“Creating this giant mecca for more tourists to come here, that’s not necessarily something that we have in the books, because, financially, we just don’t have that,” he said after the tour earlier this month. “We want to take this plan and do it correctly with our partners — tribes as well as veterans.

At the end of the day, what that may look like is very similar to what they saw today.”

Lovett urged the politicians, tribal members and Forest Service to treat Camp Hale “wisely, kindly and selflessly.”

“When we are all gone, the very patient land will still be here,” said Lovett, who laughed when he asked that the pitons he hammered into the sheer rock faces around his former camp remain in place. “We are just temporary renters who better pay attention to history.”

Broomfield boys soccer knocks out No. 2 Ralston Valley

ENGLEWOOD — Broomfield senior Elijah Smith’s breakaway goal in the 8th minute of overtime Saturday afternoon at Englewood High School punched the Eagles’ ticket to the Class 5A state semifinals Tuesday, Nov. 7, at the University of Denver.

No. 7-seeded Broomfield grabbed a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 2 Ralston Valley in the second 5A quarterfinal played Saturday at Randy Penn Stadium.

“Although emotions were rushing, I saw the ball go through,” Smith said about the game-winning goal. “I started thinking about it, but was I like just run. I soon as I saw the keeper, I hit it with my left foot. That’s my weak foot, but I just went instinctually.”

Smith’s shot got past Ralston Valley senior goalie Evan Bierman to give the Eagles the golden goal victory. Broomfield will face the winner of No. 14 Cherokee Trail and No. 11 Legend next week in the semifinals.

“It was kind of surreal,” Smith said after he saw the ball in the back of the net. “I just kind of collapsed and I didn’t know what to do.”

It was the fifth straight victory for Broomfield (14-2-2 record), who actually tied Ralston Valley (15-1-2) earlier this season. The previously undefeated Mustangs were the highest seed remaining and only 5A team without a loss coming into the quarterfinals.

“If they haven’t lost they are bound to lose at some point,” Smith said about eliminating the highest remaining seed. “We were like, let’s be the ones to put them out.”

Ralston Valley had back-toback OT playoff wins under their belt, but the overtime magic wasn’t on the Mustangs’ side against Broomfield.

“We have been to OT before. We know how to get it done. We know we have to put on the pressure,” Ralston Valley senior captain Ryan Mann said. “At the end of the day, (Broomfield) is a good team and by OT we weren’t good enough. We didn’t have the legs and apparently we didn’t have the will.”

Ralston Valley set a school record with 15 wins this season coming off last year’s campaign of advancing to the 5A state semifinals for the first time in the program’s history.

“Last year and this year were outstanding,” Mann said of the Mustangs racking up a 28-7-2 record and a pair of deep postseason runs. “We have hopefully set the benchmark for RV and hopefully set a good enough model for the ones who come after us have a good legacy to play for and are proud to wear that badge.”

Mann was named the 5A Jeffco League MVP and Ralston Valley’s first-year coach John Doody took the Coach of the Year honor in 5A Jeffco.

“I’m super proud of these boys,” Mann said. “It was an amazing season. It is something I’ll never forget and I’m truly, truly grateful. I love every single one of these guys like a brother.”

Tracey Boychuk built Pomona gymnastics into a perennial powerhouse

THORNTON — For the last time as Pomona’s head gymnastics coach, Tracey Boychuk stood outside the crowed gym doors Thursday afternoon before the start of the 3-day state tournament at Thornton High School.

“I didn’t think I would get that emotional today,” Boychuk said it being her last state meet as the head coach for the Panthers. “All the good moments. All the bad moments.

All the girls. The families. The other coaches. This meet is awesome. You don’t see football coaches out there helping set up the bars. This meet means a lot.”

Boychuk announced earlier this season that this would be her final year guiding the Panthers. Her coaching career started in the early 1990s and she took over Pomona in the mid-1990s.

Pomona became a perennial powerhouse, highlighted by five straight Class 5A state team titles from 2015 to 2019. Boychuk said it was just time to step away as the head coach and she plans on retiring from teaching at Pomona after next school year.

“I don’t want to just walk away from something I build over these years,” Boychuk said about staying on as an assistant coach for Dani Kelly, who will take over the program next season. “I want to be there to help out Dani. She was one of my gymnasts and has been my assistant for so long. She is such a special person. I promised I wouldn’t leave her all by herself that first year.”

Boychuk has numerous major accomplishments during her 33 years at Pomona. The first time she was able to qualify her entire team to the state meet in 1997 was a big benchmark for the program.

“Us being here so much as a team is something I’m really proud of,” Boychuk said of the state meet. “I can remember the first time qualifying as a team. It was so exciting because the team hasn’t been to state since 1978.”

Two years later, Pomona brought home its first hardware. The Panthers were the 5A state runner-up in

the team competition behind Loveland in 1999.

“I was really kind of disappointed at first. I really felt like we could have won that meet,” Boychuk said of the first of three state runner-up trophies from 1999 to 2002. “It took me a minute to look back and see what we just did.”

Pomona also had plenty of individual accomplishments during its amazing run from 2014 to 2019. The Panthers captured five individual allaround titles over the six-year span.

Natalie Gillan was the first Pomona gymnastic to win the all-around with back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002.

Kelsey Boychuk (Tracey’s daughter) captured back-to-back allaround titles as a freshman and sophomore in 2014 and 2015. Kelsey battled some injuries her final two years at Pomona, but went on to compete for Iowa State University.

After finishing out her college

and athlete career last year, Kelsey jumped right into coach like her mother. Kelsey is currently an assistant coach of the women’s gymnastics program at Simpson College in Iowa.

Brooke Weins won the all-around in 2016 for Pomona. Kaylie Berens (daughter of assistant coach Lisa Berens) took the all-around in 2017 and 2019.

“What was so great about them was they weren’t in it for themselves.

They were truly in it for the team,” Boychuk said of her four gymnasts all-around state champions. “They really didn’t care about how they did individually, as long as the team did well that is all they cared about. They pushed themselves and pushed each other.”

Boychuk had thoughts about stepping down from coaching just before COVID in 2020, but wanted to stay on to help the program maneuver

through that tough time.

Pomona had another strong year in 2023 winning its 12th Jeffco League title under Boychuk and finishing fourth in the 5A state team competition Thursday night. Addy Brodie (4th) and Averie Hull (tied 5th) finished in the top-5 in the individual all-around.

“Pomona is a great place. My girls come from everywhere,” Boychuk said. “The one thing that makes me the proudest is inside their Ralston Valley or Golden letter jackets they put that ‘P’ on the inside. They are proud to be apart of this program.”

“Traditions are huge for our team and school as a whole,” said Kelly, who is a math teacher at Pomona.

“Working at Pomona we really strive to keeping those traditions alive over the years.”

The legacy that Boychuk leaves behind will always live on at Pomona.

“I just hope I contributed to the success and building up of young women and women sports,” Boychuk said of how she wanted to be remembered. “I hope I have given them something that they can look back on and be proud of and remember fondly.”
