The acquisition is the first for NTLN, a nascent nonprofit that seeks to leverage national foundation funding to buy and bolster local newspapers threatened by faltering business models and the encroachment of hedge funds and corporate conglomerates. The Colorado Sun, a statewide news outlet founded and run by former Denver Post journalists, will oversee daily operations at Colorado Community Media.
Charles Johnston, who served 30 years on the Lakewood Police Department, 20 of those as its leader, has passed away after losing what the department called a “valiant battle with cancer.” Johnston started his career with the Lakewood PD in 1970 after a brief stint in Salinas, California. He moved through the ranks in 11 years, becoming Director of the department in 1981. Among the early accomplishments highlighted in the Department official press release of his death, were changing the Department’s name from the Lakewood Department of Public Safety to the Lakewood Police Department. He also changed the name of his position from director to chief. Johnston served as chief for 20 years, ushering in a new era of professionalism and innovative programs, establishing the Department’s Speakers Bureau, Lakewood’s Neighborhood Watch and Citizen’s Police Academy. Colorado Community Media, the company that produces two dozen newspapers around the Denver-ar-
ea suburbs — including the Jeffco Transcript — and two shoppers has been acquired by a local and national partnership with the goal of building a sustainable business model for local news, its ownership announced on May 3. Jerry and Ann Healey, the couple who built the company over the past decade, sold the network of papers that now spans eight counties and dozens of communities to a joint partnership between the National Trust for Local News, or NTLN, and The Colorado Sun.
