DisAbility vaccine event brings smiles and relief Jeffco’s most vulnerable are happy for their turn in the queue BY BOB WOOLEY BWOOLEY@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

A line of cars stretching through a parking garage near the Lakewood Wadsworth RTD station may have been the happiest place in the city on a rather dreary Wednesday morning last week. Because inside each of those cars, members of a group with high risks for COVID19, who’ve been a bit under the radar, were finally able to get their first vaccination shot. After remaining stagnant for a month, Jeffco’s COVID-19 case numbers started a new uptick on March 17 that is putting the county at risk of having more restrictions imposed on it by the state and creating new concerns for county health officials. At the end of February, Jeffco’s COVID-19 rate of new COVID-19 cases and two other key metrics were low enough that the county qualified to be moved to the second least restrictive level on the state’s COVID-19 dial, Level Blue. Since then, the state has tinkered with the dial so that one of the criteria for remaining in Level Blue is that the seven-day new incidence rate of new cases in a county cannot exceed 115 per 100,000 in county population for more than five consecutive days. Following the move to Level Blue, Jeffco’s seven-day incidence rate had hovered between 100 and 115 new cases and only exceeded 115 on one day. But the situation took a turn for the worst on March 22, when the seven-day incidence rate reached 131.4, the highest it had been since late January. The rate had been gradually increasing from 97.8 on March 16. The seven-day average remained at 131.4 on March 23 before dropping slightly to 130 on March 24 and SEE COVID, P8
