On behalf of our great city, I would like to thank you for visiting Golden. There is so much to see and do all 365 days a year that you may find your visit too short to fit it all in.
Laura Weinberg Golden MayorGolden is the home to the world’s largest single site brewery, a world-renowned university, tremendous outdoor recreation opportunities, abundant arts and cultural experiences, and a rich history of the Old West. Whatever brings you to Golden, my hope is that you have a chance to interact with members of the community and visit our excellent museums, stores and restaurants.
The city and our businesses and community partners take health and safety seriously and your well-being is a top priority. Whether you are here for a couple of hours or a couple of months, I hope you have a fun, safe, enjoyable visit in our beautiful city.
Golden was established during the 1859 Gold Rush. Prospectors from the East headed into the mountains, hoping to locate gold. Many of Golden’s founders had participated in the 1849 California Gold Rush and had learned that the surest way to get rich was to “mine the miners” by selling them food and supplies. Golden’s location at the foot of the mountains made it an ideal place to rest and resupply before making the final, arduous trek. One of the founders was named “Tom Golden,” and his name was chosen for the new settlement.
Many towns were established during that brief and intense Gold Rush period, and many quickly faded — first to ghost towns and later to dust. Golden had a precious commodity that gave it staying power — water. This was necessary for both drinking and agriculture. The rainfall in this region is not sufficient to grow most crops, but with irrigation water, almost anything will grow here. Farmers and business investors immediately began to dig ditches, to route Clear Creek water into
the surrounding hinterlands. A thriving agricultural community formed, with Golden as its commercial hub.
The next big boost in Golden’s economic vitality was the 1870 arrival of the Colorado Central Railroad. This line connected the mountain mining towns —including Central City, Idaho Springs and Georgetown — to Denver.
This new ability to transport people and freight allowed Golden to become an industrial hub. By the late 19th century, Golden had smelters, coal and clay mines, brick and tile manufacturers, and one extremely promising brewer.
Adolph Coors arrived in Golden in 1873. He found pure, abundant spring water in the Clear Creek valley and recognized the site as the perfect place to build a brewery. Coors’ attention to not only production but distribution allowed the company to thrive, and it soon became one of Golden’s biggest employers. Today, it is the largest single-site brewery in the world!
The Colorado School of Mines was established in 1874. Its original focus on mining soon expanded to include oil exploration and engineering. The school now partners with the nearby National Renewable Energy Laboratory to develop emerging energy sources. CSM has been another long-term employer and economic engine for the Golden community.
Golden’s beautiful scenery has always drawn tourists. Early visitors rented burros to carry them to the top of South Table Mountain. In 1912 and 1913, competing funicular railways brought eager sightseers to Castle Rock and Lookout Mountain. PAGE
The funiculars soon lost popularity when the Lariat Loop Trail was built in 1913, and the mountains were opened to automobile travel. Today, Golden’s extensive trail system and surrounding Open Space make it a haven for hikers and bikers.
Clear Creek remains the historic heart of the Golden community. It continues to provide top-notch drinking water and has become a popular recreation spot with its kayak course and miles of paved trails.

From dinosaurs to the Old West, from trains to diamonds — there’s a lot to explore in Golden.
The nine museums in and around the city will help locals and visitors alike immerse themselves in history, art and culture.
Whether it’s a quick outing between a hike and dinner or an all-day excursion, there’s something for everyone to do and learn in Golden.
For those already visiting downtown, perhaps the best place to start is Golden History Museum & Park, director Nathan Richie suggested.
The museum, which is steps away from downtown, “encapsulates the spirit of the town since its founding in 1859,” Richie said. Both the museum and the park feature materials about settler life in the foothills, including interactive exhibits.
Along with other activities and events, the museum hosts an annual Autumn Fest on the first Sunday in October. The event draws thousands to both the museum and park for a variety of historical and cultural demonstrations, Richie said.
Golden History Museum is also within walking distance of the American Mountaineering Museum, Foothills Art Center and the Mines Museum of Earth Science.
Golden History Museum, FAC and the Mines Museum are all free.
Families wave at Thomas the Tank Engine at the Colorado Railroad Museum in September 2022. The railroad museum offers both indoor and outdoor exhibits, and seasonal events like the famous Polar Express during the winter holidays.
The Foothills Art Center features multiple art exhibits, classes and other events. As the museum states on its website: “We believe that art is for everyone, every day.”
Likewise, the Mines Museum offers tours of its mineral collection and exhibits on Colorado’s mining history. Additionally, the surrounding Colorado School of Mines campus has a secret treasure — the Mines Geology Trail, which features fault lines and fossils.
“It’s great to do with kids,” Mines student and museum staff member Karen Pederson said.
A quick walk south of the Mines campus is the Triceratops Trail, part of Dinosaur Ridge. Visitors can book an official tour in advance or take a self-guided tour past the fossils and imprints.
At Dinosaur Ridge’s main location, which is south of the Golden city limits, the Visitor Center offers exhibit space, a fossil dig pit for youngsters, and 45-minute guided tours of the fossils and imprints on the eponymous ridge. There are also self-guided tour options, including a new children’s audio tour of Dinosaur Ridge, spokesperson Kristen Kidd explained.
For even more dinosaur fun, the Discovery Center near Red Rocks has additional exhibits, a gift shop, a picnicking area and more. While a self-guided tour along the ridge is always free, the museum will offer free admission to its exhibit halls on March 17, April 17 and more.
Kidd said 2023 is a big year for Dinosaur Ridge, as it’s the 50th anniversary of the Morrison-Golden Fossil Area designation. Dino fans should be on the lookout for some special events this year.
Those willing to make the trek up Lookout Mountain will be well-rewarded with a visit to the Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave and the Lookout Mountain Nature Center & Preserve. The former offers a look at William “Buffalo Bill” Cody’s life and artifacts and is filled with a Western flair. The latter offers insight into the local flora and fauna, with lots of quiet nature trails and scenic views to enjoy.
Finally, the Colorado Railroad Museum will have train-lovers on track to northeast Golden, while the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum will have people in stitches along Colfax Avenue.
The Colorado Railroad Museum offers both indoor and outdoor exhibits, and seasonal events like the famous Polar Express in late 2023.
Meanwhile, the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum will feature new exhibits in January, April, July and October. This year’s exhibits range from nature-based pieces to paper quilts made of candy wrappers and junk mail.
For these nine museums, admission prices and operating hours vary. Check their websites for additional information, including activities and special events.

As the summer stretches on, the frigid and fastflowing waters of Clear Creek subside enough to allow tubers a chance to float pleasantly down the Golden section of the waterway. Here are some tips to ensure you enjoy your tubing trip.
Be safe. Follow all local rules, warnings and closures and never underestimate the creek.
Rent a tube, especially if you don’t have a better-quality tube of your own. Several businesses in town cater to tubers.
Scope out your pull-out point before hitting the creek. Parfet Park or Vanover Park on the northern bank are the most common spots.
Wear good water shoes. And no, flip-flops don’t qualify.
Have fun!
