dsummers@coloradocommunitymedia.com Tri-Lakes Cares does just that. It cares about people and it cares about community. It’s been 30 years since Tri-Lakes Cares opened its doors to residents of the northern El Paso County. During that time the non-profit organization has grown from a mom-and-pop operation to a staff of 14 employees and more than 200 volunteers servicing thousands of people. There will be a 30th anniversary celebration June 4 at Northland Community Church (245 Second St., Monument). The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. “We’re going to tell folks what we’ve done and let them know how their donations have impacted the community,” said Haley Chapin, Tri-Lakes Cares executive director. “People can learn more about the organization and how to get involved.” Tri-Lakes Cares has a budget of $1.7 million this fiscal year. Of that, $927,000 — at least — are in-kind donations; meaning it didn’t cost the organization a dime. “That’s up from $747,000 last year,” Chapin said. It’s been mostly in the last four years — when Chapin came on board — that

The Donala Water and Sanitation District will hold its regular board election on May 6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The poll place will be at the District office, 15850 Holbein Drive. Applications for and return of absentee voter ballots may be filed with — and replacement ballots may be received from — Ginnette Ritz, Designated Election Official of the Donala Water and Sanitation District, 15850 Holbein Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80921. This can take place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., until the close of business on the Friday (May 2) immediately preceding the regular election. Four people are running for three seats on the Board; Bob Denny, David Frye, David Powell and William T. Nance. Here is a little bit about each candidate:

Curious shoppers delight in the variety of items at Hangers Thrift Store. Hangers is operated by Tri-Lakes Cares. Tri-Lakes Cares has increased its operation to include medical services, postsecondary education programs, holiday food baskets, and even legal assistance. “We’re a growing entity, and a lot of the growth has occurred in services that we provide,” said Tri-Lakes Cares Board president John Anderson. “It’s expanded tremendously in the last four years. “There are people who did a marvelous job establishing Tri-Lakes Cares. Previous executive directors did a wonderful job attending to community needs. Those folks set the groundwork. But now we’re moving in a lot of different directions.”

For years, Tri-Lakes Cares focused on the emergency needs — food on the table, clothing for cold weather, and the like. “Over the years we have grown to be more encompassing and we now refer to ourselves as a community resource center,” Chapin said. There are still times, however, when emergency help is the most critical; as in the case of last summer’s Black Forest Fire when almost 500 homes were destroyed. Cares continues on Page 10

Denny has been a member of Donala Water Board since 2012. He is an active participant in monthly discussions and decision making for current and future water needs of the Donala community. He has been a resident of the District since 1995 and is currently retired. His resume includes four years as a financial advisor with a national firm. He established an office in the Donala area and assisted clients in the local area with personal financial decisions. He believes experience from this position helps him provide insight into Donala’s financial position. He also was an independent owner of a travel agency for eight years. He served 27 years as an Air Force officer. Began and later retired at the Air Force Academy. In his last two assignments in base management he provided guidance to Civil Engineers who, among other responsibilities, were charged with meeting water and sanitation needs of base community. Denny has been a past president (twice) of Gleneagle Sertoma, and is a current sponsor representative for local Boy Scout troop in the Donala community. He is an active volunteer at Marian House.

David Frye

Frye recently retired from the Air Force after 27 years. He said he is looking for ways to get involved and help in Donala community. With water a concern in the Board continues on Page 10
