Commissioners highlight year of success Laydon cues up Teal as next chair at State of the County

After a lengthy presentation touting the county’s 2023 achievements and investments, Douglas County Commissioner Abe Laydon ended the annual State of the County event by announcing he is stepping down as chair of the board at the end of the year.

Laydon asked fellow Commissioner George Teal to take over board leadership in 2024. Teal seemed agreeable to the request during the

Nov. 15 event.

When asked what prompted the announcement, Laydon said, “George earned it fair and square. Today was our last large county event of the year and we normally select our leadership as we enter the new year.”

Laydon said that a vote of the threemember board — himself, Teal, and Lora Thomas — has to be taken in January to make it official.

“True leadership requires that we not forget to send the elevator back down and empower others to do their best work as well,” said Laydon, who was reelected to a second term in 2022. “No commissioner can do it alone, and on a three-member board, you need at least one other vote, ideally two, to get anything done. George been a kind, thoughtful, trustworthy collaborator, and vice chair, but most people don’t realize that 95% of the incredible successes we shared today at the State of the County were a result of Commissioner Teal simply being the second vote.”

In the annual State of the County, the 2023 theme was “Partnerships in the Public Interest.”

The commissioners, through videos and prepared speeches, highlighted work in a variety of areas, starting with coming together in a moment of need when a tornado hit Highlands Ranch in June.

A video showed county residents coming together to support each other and clean up the damage, and highlighted the work of emergency crews and volunteer organizations.

Laydon also thanked the State of Colorado for its support in declaring

a disaster that later led to federal aid.

In other areas to highlight successful partnerships, the commissioners talked about work in the public safety sector, transportation, health and human services, historic and natural resources, economic foundations and essential county services.

Laydon highlighted the county’s work in 2023 in reducing homelessness rates, saying Douglas County is one of two counties statewide to reduce numbers through a variety of efforts.

In 2021, Douglas County started the homelessness initiative using the four Cs, compassion, code enforcement, community services and communications, as the principles to the program.

In 2023, Laydon said, the county started HEART, or Homeless Engagement, Assistance and Resource Team, which teams sheriff ’s deputies with mental-health professionals to respond to calls regarding homelessness and offer services to those who want help.

Laydon said HEART has been successful, helping to reduce homelessness in the county by 36% and fielding more than 1,400 calls this year.

Besides partnering with local law enforcement to address homelessness, Laydon said the county also took action to address the “Number one potential threat facing Douglas County” — wildfires.

In the video, Laydon is shown standing among some Lone Tree homes, where he said one square mile in Douglas County is worth $111 million in property values. To better prepare for wildfire, the county invested in an exclusive-use firefighting helicopter to respond 153 days a year.

Mike Alexander, the county’s emergency management director, said in the video that the helicopter is critical to wildfire prevention efforts as it carries up to 329 gallons of water and nine passengers.

In transportation, the county continues to partner with local municipalities to improve major roadways.

The county has invested $120 million

to help Castle Rock build the Crystal Valley Interchange, $4 million to work with Lone Tree to improve Lincoln Avenue and $13 million to improve major roadways in Highlands Ranch.

Other partnerships highlighted by the Douglas County commissioners in 2023 include growth in the county’s mental health program, which expanded to include more help for youth and veterans.

Teal also highlighted the county’s increased attention to the aging population in Douglas County. Teal said the county worked to gather information in 2023 through multiple town halls and surveys. With the results expected in 2024, Teal stressed the county will make senior citizens a priority in the coming year.

In the presentation that lasted an hour and a half, the county also highlighted success in building a barnd new health department that got up and running in 2023 and continued efforts in economic stability to build a strong relationship with the business community.

Fentanyl crisis: Officials continue to raise awareness

A person does not have to suffer from a long-term substance abuse problem to suffer the consequences of fentanyl when only two milligrams is lethal and it’s become more easily accessible through social media.

“Don’t think that when you hear national stories on the news… Parker, Douglas County — we are not immune to the national trends,” said Acting Special Agent David Olesky of the Drug Enforcement Administration Rocky Mountain Field.

Parker Police Chief Jim Tsurapas and the Parker Police Department hosted a law enforcement, healthcare and local leaders discussion panel at Legend High School to talk about the dangers and effects of fentanyl.

Tsurapas said officers are responding to calls to find people overdosing on fentanyl.

Authorities also believe increased fentanyl use is also tied to other crimes, such as more stolen cars and guns.

“We’re dealing with fentanyl almost daily,” said Tsurapas.

Law enforcement and government agencies are not the only ones dealing with fentanyl, it’s parents, siblings and friends.

Panelist Dawn Danner, a Parker resident and mother, stressed the need to have conversations with teens and children about the dangers of pills.

One of Danner’s sons had struggled with substance abuse. He later died from a cocaine overdose that was mixed with fentanyl.

SpaceX rocket booster arrives at new home in Littleton

A 154-foot SpaceX rocket booster has arrived at its new home outside of the DISH Network Corporate Offices in Littleton, on the southwest quadrant of the intersection of Bowles Avenue and Santa Fe Drive.

It is a Falcon 9, which is a type of reusable rocket that SpaceX uses for repeated launches. According to SpaceX’s website, the Falcon 9 is the first orbital-class reusable rocket in the world.

This particular booster is being repurposed as an exhibit, sitting atop three pedestals on the DISH Network campus. It sits about 12 feet in the air, crossing over Little’s Creek Trail, Littleton Public Works Director Keith Reester said.

DISH Network, a satellite television company headquartered in unincorporated Douglas County, approached the City of Littleton in 2021 to pitch the project, according to the city.

Reester said SpaceX donated the booster to DISH, and the maintenance and security of the exhibit are DISH’s responsibilities.

The city helped with the regulatory side of the project but has no direct costs because the Telluray Foundation, a local foundation, provided a $2.4 million grant to cover the costs of project development and installation.

The Telluray Foundation declined to comment for this story.

Reester said he expects the contractors to finish the construction of the exhibit site — including fencing, ground leveling, a walkway and signage — in early December.

“I think that there’s a lot of people that are interested in this kind of thing, and we hope to see them here,” Reester said. “From an economic standpoint … more tourism will give a boost to our community, and those are all really good things.

It’ll be an ongoing draw, I think.”

The exhibit site will be accessible from the Mary Carter Greenway Trail and Little’s Creek Trail and there will be no public parking on site, Reester said.

There will be wayfinding signs to guide visitors from downtown Lit-

tleton and the Littleton Downtown RTD station, which are about half a mile away.

County Offices Closed Nov. 23 & 24 Douglas County offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 23 and Friday, Nov. 24 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Why Littleton?

The display will be one of only three of its kind in the country.

One Falcon 9 rocket booster sits outside of the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, while another is at Space Center Houston in Texas.

Reester said part of the reason the exhibit makes sense in Littleton is because of the city’s connection with the aerospace industry.

“We have a long aerospace history and DISH happens to be one of the leaders in aerospace in Littleton now,” he said.

Aerospace company Lockheed Martin has had a large presence in the Littleton area for decades.

United Launch Alliance, a space launch company that competes with SpaceX, is headquartered in Centennial.

At a July city council meeting, Cantey Ergen, co-founder of DISH Network, said the booster should be on display in Littleton because of the city’s connection to the aerospace industry.

“We all talk about STEM education,” Ergen said. “We all want to excite kids and families and learners to understand technology that our country leads in right now, and we think that for DISH to have the opportunity to do this in partnership with the city of Littleton and the foundation … is something that would be beneficial to the city of Littleton.”

But the company’s relationship to SpaceX is a little bit more complicated, with a history of legal disputes between the companies.

In January, DISH sued SpaceX to try to stop its satellite internet service, Starlink, from launching its next-generation satellite network.

In May, SpaceX won a spectrum dispute with DISH regarding access to the 12GHz spectrum.

But according to Ergen, the companies also work together.

Centennial Airport committee to change public comment process

Aiming to increase its efficiency, the Centennial Airport Community Noise Roundtable discussed changing the public comment process at its meetings.

For months, the roundtable — made up primarily of local elected officials in Arapahoe and Douglas counties, appointed representatives from the community, and airport staff and users — has been trying to address community concerns about increased air traffic and noise.

tion, or FAA. During the monthly noise roundtable meetings, there are public comment periods where members of the public are able to approach a podium and give a three-minute comment to the roundtable.

Typically, the roundtable schedules for public comment to be given toward the beginning of its meeting and again toward the end of the meeting.

However, the roundtable is now considering making changes to its public comment process, including moving the public comment period toward the end of the meeting.

At the Nov. 1 meeting, Brad Pierce, the chair of the roundtable, said moving the public comment

period to the end of the meeting is intended to give the roundtable more time to discuss its work.

Another reason is so the public can listen to the entire meeting and comment on what happened at the meeting, he said.

Greenwood Village Council Member Donna Johnston, a member of the roundtable, noted that the roundtable is a recommending body.

The roundtable’s stated mission is to bring together the airport, community, FAA and aviation industry representatives to identify noise issues and recommend courses of action that could reduce noise over affected communities.

“For the past 14 months, we’ve been just listening to the public but really not performing our duties as much as we want — focusing on issues and actually, you know, trying to do something,” Johnston said.

Another proposed change is

that questions raised during public comment may be addressed by the roundtable after all the commenters have spoken.

Over the months, there have been incidents where commenters will ask questions to the roundtable as part of their public comment, leading to back-and-forth conversations between the commenter and the roundtable.

“The one-on-one dialogue, back and forth, has been very disruptive and not very effective,” said Lone Tree Council Member Mike Anderson, a member of the roundtable.

Castle Pines Council Member Chris Eubanks, also a member of the roundtable, said the idea behind the change is that, instead of there being back-and-forth dialogue between commenters and the roundtable, the public will give comments and then the roundtable can address questions at the end.

The intent is to make the meeting

flow better, he said.

“The spirit of this is in no way trying to silence the community,” Eubanks said. “The spirit of this is trying to understand better and having a more consolidated way to listen.”

The roundtable also discussed having a new policy where if the meeting, which is scheduled to go from 6:30-8:30 p.m., extends until 9 p.m., then the roundtable will have to vote on whether to extend the meeting for another 30 minutes.

If that vote fails, then the meeting would end.

The roundtable did not formally vote on making these procedure changes during the Nov. 1 meeting.

Pierce said revisions will be made to the proposed procedures and they will be sent via email to members of the roundtable within the next few weeks. He said the roundtable is able to vote via email on approving them.

Sterling Ranch hosts cattle drive

Cowboys and cattle traversed the streets of Sterling Ranch for the neighborhood’s third annual cattle drive, moving around 100 cows to their winter pasture in Douglas County.

Hundreds of residents watched from porches, driveways and sidewalks as the herd of Angus trotted across the 3,400-acre neighborhood, guided by about 20 riders from Roundup Riders of the West and Clough Cattle Company.

Harold Smethills, founder of Sterling Ranch, said an important element of the neighborhood is its commitment to taking care of the land and preserving its history as a former cattle ranch.

The cows and annual cattle drive are part of the community’s Prairie Management Plan, which helps guide the cultivation of the property. The cattle contribute to a healthy prairie ecosystem by fertilizing and aerating the land, as well as keeping the grass low to protect from predators.

“Cattle drives are a longtime western tradition and grazing of cattle is a key part of the strategy of building a robust ecosystem and is part of the unique vision of Ster-

ling Ranch where the community lives with nature,” Smethills said.

The herd will stay at Sterling Ranch until the spring, when they give birth to their calves, and then move to the summer pasture for rotational grazing. Smethills said last year there were about 200 calves born in the community.

Smethills said rotational grazing is part of the community’s fire mitigation strategy, with the cattle eating down potential fuel. About 50 cows were brought to Sterling Ranch a few weeks early this year to get a head start because the wet summer resulted in an abundance of tall grass, Smethills said.

“Cattle grazing might seem like it would have a minimal effect on fire mitigation, but in reality, these cows are devouring fire energy,” he said.

Though Smethills appreciates the environmental benefits of the cows, he said his favorite part of the cattle drive is seeing the excitement from residents and sharing his love for the livestock.

“The most important things for a community are those that bring people together so they can get to know each other,” he said.

“The cattle are personalities and they’re magnificent animals and people really enjoy them.

UCHealth dietitian talks diabetes prevention, self care

Although there is no exact cure for diabetes, the chronic condition that affects how the body turns food into energy, there are ways to help manage it and prevent a diagnosis.

Rebecca Warren, a dietitian and clinical nutrition manager at UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital, said that a well rounded diet and healthy lifestyle plays a huge role in a person’s overall health.

Diabetes is the eighth leading cause of death in the U.S. with more than 37 million U.S. adults having the condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and one in five of those adults don’t know they have it.

In Colorado, a 2021 American Diabetes Association report indicates more than 310,000 people have been diagnosed with diabetes and it’s estimated that nearly 40,000 are diagnosed every year.

Types of diabetes

The body breaks down most of the

food eaten into sugars and goes into the bloodstream. When a person’s blood pressure goes up, it signals the pancreas to release insulin, which releases the blood sugar in the body for cells to use as energy.

For someone with diabetes, the body doesn’t make enough insulin, or doesn’t have the ability to use the insulin as well as it should. As a result, too much blood sugar stays in the bloodstream.

“When we think about nutrition in terms of preventing diabetes, we’re really looking at preventing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes,” said Warren.

Prediabetes, in which an estimated 96 million adults have, occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but are not high enough to reach the level of an official type 2 diagnosis as it can be reversible through exercise and diet.

Oftentimes people who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes later in life are commonly due to poor dietary habits, obesity and lack of adequate physical activity, Warren said.

However, oral medications are not used for type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is thought to be autoimmune and occurs when the cells of the pancreas are unable to produce insulin on its own, therefore, insulin from an outside source such as an injection is used.

Diabetes can be managed through maintaining a healthy weight, being

physically active, choosing healthier meals and limiting processed food intake.

Black leaders criticize Cherry Creek schools for handling of racist video

Officials with the NAACP and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission raised concerns about student safety following the spread of a video showing a Cherry Creek middle school student expressing hatred against Black people.

In the video, shared with Colorado Community Media, a child used a racial slur and said Black people should “not be alive right now.” The child said that he hates the color of their skin.

According to the Rocky Mountain NAACP, the video is of a West Middle School student and was shot in September.

The Cherry Creek School District responded on Nov. 15, the same day as the press conference. The district said that it was first made aware of the racist video was recorded in September and that it was created outside of a school setting by the student and shared in a group text.

“The language in the video is hatefilled and we took swift action to address this unacceptable behavior,” the school district said in a statement. “Administration and law enforcement acted immediately to investigate the situation.”

The district added: “Students found to be responsible faced significant discipline and their parents were responsive to the severity of the situation. Due to the privacy rights of students, we cannot discuss specifics of discipline.”

Portia Prescott, the president of the Rocky Mountain NAACP, said that she has received comments from concerned parents about the video since it first surfaced about a month ago expressing fear for students’ safety.

The Rocky Mountain NAACP State Conference said it had been informed of Black students being threatened and considered the matter concerning enough to warrant an “emergency” press conference.

“We are late, obviously, two months later, but unfortunately, that’s how viral works,” Prescott said while standing outside of West Middle School. “It got to a bunch of

kids.”

Prescott said a clip of the student was reshared online and eventually shared with children who showed it to their parents.

According to the school district, a letter was sent to West Middle School families on Sept. 29 from Mónica García, the school principal.

In that letter, García said the school “dealt with some incidents of racist speech at our school and in our community,” calling it unacceptable. The principal included a resource for families to talk with children about discriminatory behavior and hate-motivated language.

Although the school district took action, Prescott said school leaders should have addressed it more publicly and shared information on a school website with resources for students and families.

Vern L. Howard, the chairman of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission, said parents have expressed concern that the district did not handle the situation properly. He said the issue was serious enough to warrant involvement beyond the middle school.

“There should have been a districtwide email that went out to parents letting them know that this threat or this rhetoric existed and then how they handled it,” Howard said.

Howard said some parents who have voiced concerns did not feel comfortable speaking at the press conference because they do not feel safe.

Prescott said the NAACP is shouldering a lot of complaints from parents because they feel like the school district is not listening.

“We need to talk about, ‘What is public safety for parents?’” she said.

She added that she does not want to blame anyone and that she views the video as a cry for help.

“It’s not a parent issue, but it is all of our issues,” she said.

Prescott and Howard said they want to work with the community and the school district to protect students and make sure everyone feels safe.

“That’s why we’re here today,” Prescott said. “We’re here to come up with new solutions, to help the schools.”

ThunderRidge student heads to Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Chosen to be part of the Great American Marching Band

Audra Marriott will be trading in her green and black marching band uniform for a red and white one to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band.

Starting at a young age, Marriott, a junior at ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, has always watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day with her family, watching the marching bands go by and perform on the iconic Macy’s star.

The Macy’s Great American Marching Band is made up of more than 100 high school students from every state across the country who play multiple songs during the televised Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Although it’s not on such a grand scale as a parade in New York City and with a much larger band, Marriott has performed numerous field shows with her marching band since freshman year and the trumpet isher choice of instrument.

Almost two years ago Marriott’s mom, Christina, suggested to her daughter that she should audition for the prestigious marching band.

“When I heard that I could participate in it, I was like, I have to audition,” said Marriott.

With suggestions from her private trumpet teacher, together the two chose a couple of tunes to audition with.

In addition to filling out a form and sending in multiple videos of herself playing the trumpet, Marriott also had to send in a video that showed off her marching skills, which includes step size and proper step technique.

Marriott waited a long time after submitting her audition material in March of 2022.

“There was a big window of time between auditioning and hearing the results,” said Marriott.

Then, one day in early 2023, Marriott was sitting at her desk at school when

she got an email. Overcome with excitement, she contained her emotions as she wanted to wait to open the email until she was home with her family.

“I read it out loud and we were all just so happy,” said Marriott.

Just a few weeks ago, all the students who were accepted into the marching band received their music sheets to individually practice. One of the songs they will be playing is “Sweet Caroline”

by Neil Diamond.

All the students will travel to New York City on their own a few days before Thanksgiving and have a large group practice where they will rehearse the music and march together for the first time.

Upon their arrival in New York City, Marriott and the rest of the members will be fitted for the classic red and white uniform.

“I’m really looking forward to getting to know lots of different new peo-

ple,” said Marriott. “I feel like I’m kind of confined to my own little band at ThunderRidge and I think it’ll be really cool to meet new people from different states.”

While in New York City, the band will take a sightseeing tour, explore Times Square and see the Michael Jackson show on Broadway.

After the parade, there will be a big Thanksgiving feast at their hotel where families and the band members will meet to enjoy the holiday together.

As Marriott embarks on this journey, she would like to thank her private trumpet teacher and her band director, Brandon Graese for their support and helping her in her music career.

“I would love to thank my mom because she was the one that suggested the opportunity,” said Marriott. “And she helped me a lot with recording and making sure that it was the best that I could do.”

When to collect Social Security

ou may be eligible to collect Social Security as early as age 62. But that does not mean that is the best time to do so. Some are worried that Social Security may run out of money, so they want to collect as soon as possible. Others are trying to outwit the mortality tables and optimize the best break-even. Whatever you do, make sure you gather all the facts and put them in your financial plan to determine the best outcome for you.

The 2023 U.S. Retirement Survey by Schroders paints a troubling picture of the retirement landscape in the United States.

One of the key takeaways is that only 10% of workers plan to wait until age 70 to retire. Delaying until 70 unlocks the maximum Social Security benefit, which is up to 32% more than the full retirement age (FRA) benefit.¹ Even more concerning is that 40% of workers intend to start receiving benefits between the ages of 62 and 65, reducing their benefit for the remainder of their lives. Part of this thought process could be a lack of confidence in the Social Security system, causing people to want to get benefits nd before funds are depleted. Many at may not realize that collecting ly before their FRA, which is usunt ally around 66½ or 67 for today’s retirees, causes a lifetime penalty ill for collecting early. es When planning for retirement, on consider that when you leave employment does not have to be siig multaneous with when to collect re Social Security. It could be benill eficial to have a few years of lower income before starting to collect y, retirement benefits. This could te allow you to convert some of your or, pre-tax IRA or 401(k) funds into a nd Roth while you are in a lower tax bracket. Due to the fact that the curnd rent tax law will sunset at the end nd of 2025, investors have just a little I over two years to plan on how to

benefit from lower tax brackets before 2026 rolls around.

Keep in mind that when you do enroll for Social Security benefits, you may be offered a lump-sum payment going back six months.

Patricia Kummer Be careful in accepting this payment, as it will pull your lifetime benefit back to your age six months ago, therefore locking in a lower monthly payment.

Taxpayers will also want to be cautious about the income-related monthly adjustment amount (IRMAA) for Medicare. If you receive a six-month lump sum, it could push your Medicare Part B and Part D premium higher if you are over the annual limits.

There are many considerations when choosing when to start taking Social Security. You should look at your family longevity to help determine how many years in retirement you will be collecting. Your marital status is also a factor. The spouse with the higher benefit should consider waiting to collect so the higher monthly benefit remains for the surviving spouse after the first death. Therefore, you should consider both spouses’ ages, longevity, and benefits as part of the decision on when to collect. You should also review your income tax situation to determine the optimal time to pay taxes on your Social Security benefits based on other sources of income in retirement. Therefore, collecting while you are still working is usually not optimal from a tax situation.

Post-election wrap

I

know — elections are over and for many of us, we were ready. So — why in the world would I want to rehash any of it? Well — a lot happened throughout our south metro FROM THE communities in the EDITOR 2023 election cycle.

Let’s start in Englewood. I’ve stayed quiet about a community where a lot happened and there is a lot to unravel.

First, weeks before the actual regular election, the city had Thelma Grimes to spend more than $130,000 on a recall. A recall that failed. That is a lot of wasted money. Then, to have those same candidates who kept their seats in the recall win in the regular election anyway — maybe the recall group needs to think a little more about the community structure and stability.

To the recall group’s credit — they did get enough signatures to push the recall and that is their right. It just feels irresponsible and costly.

Then — we have the school board in Englewood. We are less than two weeks away from having Davon Williams, who ran unopposed, take the oath of office.

He has a criminal history, he avoided talking to local media to talk about his past, and it appears he has no interest in being transparent with the community about his own issues.

This means he is going to be sitting on a school board and making major policy decisions for our children’s education. He has to do it legally and in front of the public. When he could not even do the decent thing and talk to the press before the election — I am not confident transparency is going to be a priority if he sits on the board.

To Davon Williams — you are going to become a constant distraction that the remaining board members and new superintendent do not deserve.

Our schools and the boards running them are important. You remaining on this board when you can’t even speak publicly is selfish and definitely will not be good for our Englewood students.

Until you get your legal issues and affairs in order — maybe serving in public office should be put on hold.

For the most part, the Littleton and Centennial elections turned out uneventful. Some competition on the school board, but all seems to be generally the same.

Cherry Creek Schools’ incumbents also got reelected. However, I have a message for them too — if making meetings available on video and livestream is not a priority, maybe you are not transparent enough to keep serving.

Not making these meetings electronically available to the public is an outdated way of running an elected board and making big decisions in our school districts. As a parent in your district — I won’t let this issue die and I hope the public becomes a lot more outspoken about it too.

Additionally, Cherry Creek schools are like many other schools throughout the Denver metro area — teachers are losing control because of an inability to discipline. Look at the reports from principals in Denver Public Schools — do we want to go down that road?

I know some teachers we’ve lost because of the discipline issues in our schools. As a parent in the district — I will keep watch of this issue as well.

Finally, we head farther south to Douglas County. I am not going to lie — I was surprised by the school board’s results. To have the slate led by incumbent Susan Meek win was interesting.

As I have said in this column space many times — I am never a fan of elected boards that are comprised of buddies who vote the same way every time.

A yes-man board is not going to ensure that the best policies are in place.

Having Brad Geiger, Valerie Thompson and Susan Meek on this board will continue to create balanced discussions that are needed in every aspect of our government.

On a side note, when I worked with the League of Women Voters to host a forum this year — I was impressed with Valerie Thompson. Her knowledge, answers, and the way she carried herself had me thinking I’d love to have her in Cherry Creek.

Finally, the bond measures in Douglas County. I am glad to see the measure to pay teachers more passed. They deserve it.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Girl power 2023

Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023 was the first “Girl Power” event, a collaboration between the Sturm Collaboration Campus, Arapahoe Community College, Douglas County Schools and the Douglas Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Fifty 8th-grade girls were treated to an exciting morning at the campus learning about STEM careers, and doing handson activities on a virtual cadaver and in cybersecurity. Their parents learned about concurrent enrollment in high school, the value of early career exploration and why developing an early relationship with their high school counselor is so important to high school girls.

We are grateful to Sarah Homer, Senior Navigator at the Sturm campus, and to the tireless efforts of AAUW members, Beryl Jacobson and Suzanne Kroepsh and Crowfoot Coffee, Meadows Orthodontics and Domino’s Pizza for their in-kind donations to make this a no-cost event for the girls and their parents. After the event, both parents and girls enthusiastically agreed that the

morning had been worthwhile and that they would recommend it to family and friends next year.

Pat Smith, Douglas County AAUW, Castle Rock Reconsider bond rejection

I am writing to express my deep concern about the recent failure to pass Ballot Issue 5B in Douglas County and the significant negative impact this decision will have on our community, particularly our schools.

Some taxpayers argued that they were unwilling to pay for new schools in neighborhoods far from their own. However, had 5B passed, it would have benefited every single school in the district. Funds would have paid for crucial areas in special education, information technology, safety, athletic and activity upgrades, and buses. Now DCSD cannot make these urgent repairs, nor can it fix mechanical and electrical systems, roofs, intercom systems, parking lots, and playgrounds, or introduce energy-efficient equipment to lower utility bills.

Other voters argued that new schools should be financed by housing developers such as in Sterling Ranch. While this is an ideal scenario, the reality is developers were not required to build schools, and at the same time buyers were assured schools would be built for their children. Instead of punishing students by withholding essential funds, voters should direct their criticism towards the county commissioners who are responsible for negotiating such terms with developers.

Others opposed the ballot issue based on a lack of trust in conservative board members after witnessing them go back on their campaign promises of transparency. However, as with previous mill/bond measures, the board is legally obligated to establish a public oversight committee. This committee ensures transparency and monitors the responsible spending of every dollar.

Some voters maintained that money should be found elsewhere within the district budget. I implore those who voted “no” on 5B because of this to show us where you can find a spare $484 million. DCSD maintains an extremely lean budget, spending far less per student than similar, neighboring districts. And increased property taxes do not provide for more school funding because they simultaneously result in the state giving Douglas County less. (Source: investindcsd.com/faq).

No one likes a local tax increase, even one as minimal as what 5B would have incurred. But grownups take care of their children, homes, and neighborhoods. There is no way around the cold, hard fact that infrastructure takes money to maintain, and we’ll see another bond on the ballot again. I urge my neighbors to reconsider the long-term consequences of neglecting their school district the next time they vote.

Dying in vain. Is there such a thing?

Not in this case.

I love my drive to and from work, using Daniels Park Road. I see turkeys, deer, and elk often. I pay close attention to the sides of the road so I can enjoy them without hitting them.

Recently, I was driving home after dark and I saw a deer lying on the

side of the road with crash debris in the other lane. I slowly passed by then something, maybe a slight head movement, made me turn the car around.

I rolled down my window and spoke to the deer and yes, he or she was alive. I turned the car around again so that I was on the same side of the road as the injured deer, maybe 100 feet away and turned on my four-way flashers.

I called the Douglas County sheriff’s dispatcher, explained where I was and that a deer had been hit by someone recently and that deer was in distress. I said I would stay with the deer until a deputy showed up.

A little while later deputy showed up. I explained that the deer did try to get up once, while I was waiting with it, but was unable to stand. A second deputy showed up and it was determined that the deer needed to be put down. At that point I left.

The next day I drove the same road going to work. Instead of seeing a dead deer carcass I was surprised to see a canvas sheet covering the whole body. That night when I drove home in the snow, there was that canvas covering the deer, acting like a warm blanket. Isn’t that how you and I might handle a special pet we had to put down?

I stopped and called the Douglas County dispatcher, the same one from the night before, and asked about the canvas covering.

I was told that this was the first time this deputy had to put down an animal and he wanted to show his respect!

Wow, now that is a man’s man.

This is the kind of officer you would want interacting with your family when you are in need. So, “No Virginia (`Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus’), this deer did not die in vain.”

Instead, this deer positively helped others to see a better self, a better America, one with respect for others.

I am writing in support of Rep. Robert Marshall’s Nov. 16 forthright and telling column on property tax solutions.

s the leaves turn and November arrives, gratitude gets its time in the spotlight. Thanksgiving reminds us to pause and give thanks for the blessings in our life. But true gratitude is more than a holiday ritual or fleeting feeling — it’s a daily mindset we can cultivate all year long.

Gratitude in the moment is powerful, but even more transformational is developing a lifestyle of

Yes, it’s pricier here but we appear to get great value for our money.

But, I was pained to realize, soon after buying our house, that not only would my taxes go up some 33+% in the new year but the evaluations are every two years!

I went to work, researching, to understand the systems and that is why I applaud Rep. Marshall. He got honest, admitting he couldn’t figure it out while his colleagues basically shined him on whenever he asked.

He “could not receive straight answers to basic questions.” No wonder it’s hard to understand.

It’s not crazy, in a world that often is, to wonder if that’s all on purpose, whilst tricks are being played out behind closed doors.

I know county and city staff and

gratitude. When we intentionally practice gratitude daily, it reshapes our perspective. Instead of focusing on lacks, we start noticing the gifts that surround us — a warm bed, health, friends who listen. Our minds default from dissatisfaction to

appreciation.

Life can sometimes feel like a heavy burden. Challenges loom large while blessings fade into the background. We get caught in a cycle of complaint and forget to appreciate what we have. An attitude of gratitude lifts us out of this negative mindset. When we intentionally cultivate gratitude daily, our whole perspective shifts.

Gratitude starts as a mindset — a lens for viewing life. When we look

for reasons to be grateful, they appear everywhere. Even on the hardest days, there are gifts if we pause to notice them — morning sunshine, a call from a friend, the laughter of a child. Gratitude opens our eyes to beauty.

Living gratefully does not mean ignoring life’s hardships or pretending to be happy all the time.

Gratitude co-exists with grief, anger,

leaders work hard and need money to maintain the services we all enjoy.

But, Please Dear God, work to keep a handle on tax and fee increases.

Inflations of all kinds are gnawing at the fabric of family functions.

We were very happy to see the mill levy override (ballot measure 5A) pass, showing the strong support for our professional educators. At the same time, we were very disappointed to see the bond measure (5B) fail, even though it would have replaced an expiring bond, resulting in no increase in taxes. Our community assets, including almost 90 school buildings, in addition to stadiums, fields and grounds, are just like our homes in that they require regular maintenance and repairs. As the county continues to be developed, with new homes built in areas not currently served by neighborhood schools, there is a strong need for new schools to be built, but now there is no money to fund repairs or new buildings.

As many community members know, there is a shortage of school

bus drivers, resulting in the cancellation of bus routes and requiring more students to find their own way to school, whether by walking or biking or being driven several miles twice a day, leaving parents to figure out car pools and alter their own work schedules. With the increased development in the county, this is not sustainable. Without a new bond, cuts to student resources will have to be made, especially if there is a catastrophic event at a school requiring immediate repairs, such as a furnace or boiler failure, in order to keep school in session. When the capital needs are urgent, the money has to be taken from the general fund. I am hopeful that the district administrators will start educating the community immediately about the needs of the district so a bond measure can pass next year. It’s the responsible thing to do.

A historical way to start the season The Tesoro Cultural Center welcomes the holiday season with its annual Farolito Lighting and Pinecone Ceremony at the Fort, 19192 Highway 8 in Morrison.

The event will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26 and offers visitors an alternative to the more familiar tree lighting ceremony.

According to provided information, the cultural center reenacts holiday traditions of the 19th century by lighting farolitos — paper bags filled with sand and illuminated with candles — and hosting a pinecone ceremony. For that portion, guests are provided with paper, pencils and pinecones so they can write something to someone who lives far away or has died. The message is tucked inside the pinecone and thrown into a bonfire.

n December, Arvada resident Judy Teter will make the trip to the southwest end of Denver, where she ensures that wreaths will be laid to honor the service of thousands of veterans at a military cemetery.

“It’s not just about laying the wreath — it’s about honoring our veterans and what they did for us,” Teter said. “There’s a proper way to lay the wreath on the headstone, and you’re also supposed to say the veteran’s name and thank them for their service.

“Because a lot of the people that are buried out there don’t have family that comes out and visits them, so we’re honoring them,” Teter continued.

Nearly 100 cemetery locations in Colorado will take part in a national event that pays respect to interred veterans with balsam wreaths. Volunteers like Teter across the state work to support national nonprofit Wreaths Across America ahead of National Wreaths Across America Day, occurring this year on Dec. 16, according to a news release.

Teter volunteers as a coordinator for the effort to place thousands of wreaths at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, near U.S. Highway 285 and Sheridan Boulevard.

Roughly 123,000 veteran graves lie at Fort Logan, according to Wreaths Across America’s website. Teter says her team’s goal is to place 20,000 wreaths there on the day of the ceremony.

She works “with the cemetery administration as to what sections they want covered because we do not have enough wreaths that are sponsored to cover the whole cemetery,” Teter said.

“But I have a goal to hopefully one day get all of Fort Logan covered,” Teter said.

A few years ago, she found out about volunteering to place flags near headstones on Memorial Day. Through that effort, she also heard about putting out the wreaths near Christmastime, and she jumped aboard.

“We wouldn’t be the United States of America with the freedoms that we have if it wasn’t for our servicemen and women,” Teter said.

Supporting other families in remembering their loved ones who served is part of her team’s role.

On the day of the wreath ceremony, a part of the schedule is set aside for family members who ordered a wreath for their loved one’s specific grave.

“That starts at 1 p.m., so it’s a little more quiet for the families to remember, talk to their family member, whatever traditions they have,” Teter said. “Last year, there was a family who had a picnic lunch at their family member’s headstone.”

Looking for help

Teter and her volunteer team work hard behind the scenes to make sure Wreaths Across America Day is a success at Fort Logan.

But she’s looking for more volunteers and trying to drum up more fundraising support to pay for more wreaths and help cover the costs of the operation.

She’s seeking support from businesses who may want to pitch in, too.

“From what I understand, that has been a challenge for a lot of the coordinators, is trying to get companies that can donate X amount of (money) to sponsor X amount of wreaths,” Teter said.

She’s also looking for a volunteer with fundraising experience in particular.

“Or somebody who says, ‘Hey, I know how to (work) a forklift,’ or somebody who says, ‘I own a business or (I can provide) a forklift or pallet jack,’” Teter said.

Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so donating to it is considered tax deductible, according to Teter.

Wreaths Across America was founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia that began in 1992, according to a news release.

The organization’s mission is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington and thousands of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond, the release said.

Local sponsorship groups registered through the national program are helping to raise the necessary sponsorships to honor service members laid to rest in participating locations.

Since its founding in 2007, Wreaths Across America has partnered with thousands of local nonprofits and civic groups, according to the release.

For those looking to donate, the nonprofit seeks $17 per wreath, Teter said.

But the money goes a long way.

Through the nonprofit’s “PayBack” program, sponsorship groups can earn $5 for every $17 veteran’s wreath sponsored to sup-

port these programs in their communities.

By making a $17 sponsorship, “you are also contributing to vital programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans and their families throughout the year,” the news release stated.

Some of the nonprofit’s free, year-round programs, according to the release, include: • The Mobile Education Exhibit that travels the country, visiting schools and communities, teaching “the value of our freedom” while acting as an official welcome home center for living Vietnam veterans.

• Wreaths Across America Radio, which gives voice to volunteers and service members so that you can hear their stories “of courage and inspiration.”

• The Wreaths Across America National Museum, which is free and open to the public. It “highlights the bravery and service of rank-and-file veterans.”

• The Remembrance Tree Program, which creates a living memorial of service members giving back to other service members.

“For people who are out of state who order them, we have a volunteer who will place them and send a picture (of the placement) to the family member,” Teter said.

the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

DEA officials have reported a dramatic rise in the number of fake pills containing at least two milligrams of fentanyl, which is equivalent to three grains of salt.

Fentanyl came on the radar for the DEA in 2015 when there was a transition in the country from addiction to prescription opioids, said Olesky.

People started using heroin more and then the cartels started to introduce fentanyl.

In 2022, the DEA seized more than 50 million fake pills often laced with fentanyl, which was nearly double the amount seized in 2021.

So far in 2023, the DEA has seized around 63 million fake pills.

are falsely marketed as legitimate prescription pills to deceive the public.

The latest lab testing by the DEA reveals that seven out of every 10 pills with fentanyl contain a potentially lethal dose, said Olseky. A rise from four out of every 10 from a few years ago.

In 2021, 107,622 people died by drug poisoning in the country, according to the DEA. Synthetic opioid deaths are the number one killer of people ages 18 to 45 in the U.S., said Kristin Carpenter, external relations strategists with the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention.

She added that although the U.S. makes up nearly 5% of the world’s population, it consumes over 80% of the world’s opioids.

“So when we are talking about this as an epidemic, it is an ‘us’ problem,” said Carpenter. “It is very specific to the United States and it’s something to be mindful of.”

the Center for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

The Consortium coordinates Colorado’s response to the misuse of medications and aims to reduce misuse and abuse through the development of policies, organizations and community coalitions.

As total overdose deaths in Colorado have increased dramatically since 2019, according to their 2022 annual report, fentanyl caused 534 overdoses in 2020 in Colorado and increased to 912 in 2021.

“Fentanyl is easily making up more than half overdose deaths that we are seeing in the state,” said Carpenter. “And unfortunately, they are increasing.”

Captain Joel White of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said that fentanyl, which is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent, comes up from Mexico through the I-25 corridor and then “pollutes our communities.”

In unincorporated Douglas County, deaths contributed to fentanyl have slowly increased over the past couple of years, according to White.

Historically, fentanyl deaths have been investigated as an overdose.

“It’s not just a death investigation, that there’s a crime here and should be investigated as a homicide,” said White.

As the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is working with other jurisdictions to investigate fentanyl through I-25 Corridor Interdiction Operations, seizures have been made.

Douglas County Impact statistics show there were over 55,000 pills seized (off the highway) in 2021. Additionally, there were nearly 8,000 seized in 2021 and almost 10,000 thus far in 2023.

DEA agent Olesky said agencies are constantly rolling out statistics, however, they remain important.

In Colorado, 11,533 people went to the emergency room department due to something involving a drug overdose, said Carpenter.

In Douglas County specifically, 435 individuals went to the emergency room and a vast majority of those individuals were ages 15 to 45.

Additionally, consortium studies show that almost all of the emergency room department visits are more female.

“Which is not to say that more women are using substances,” said Carpenter. “Men typically use substances more often but they are less likely to seek out care.”

in Douglas County were something involving overdose and were ages 15 to 24, said Carpenter.

Accessibility and social media

According to the DEA, fake prescription pills are becoming easier to get as they are often sold on social media and e-commercial platforms, making them available to anyone with a smartphone.

The reason behind the complexity of this issue for law enforcement is that it is difficult to get into smartphones, said White.

The way cartel networks are trafficking, Olesky said, is through social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and Facebook and are using apps like Venmo to pay for the pills.

Also, young adults and youth are communicating through emojis and using code words.

For example, what they have found is that the rocket ship emoji has to do with the potency of a drug and the plug means the sources of supply.

It is not just the colors and names of the pills that the public needs to look for. Olesky said the next generation of what the cartels are putting out into the marketplace are pills being pressed into familiar shapes.

Pills are being pressed with logos such as the Tesla logo, a scorpion and pressed into the shape of the Incredible Hulk, which could resemble a child’s vitamin.

Many parents find it difficult to decide at what age to talk to their children about the dangers of drugs.

Cpt. White, with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said that it’s situational and it depends on what the child is involved in, especially if they are using social media or chatting through gaming systems.

DEA.gov has additional resources on ways to talk about the dangers of fentanyl as a family.

“Knowing what you’re putting in your body and the message might not have to be about fentanyl,” said Olesky. “But making healthy decisions and healthy choices.”

When Danner had to tell her younger children that their brother had died, she told them he was given medicine that a doctor didn’t give him.

From a mother’s perspective, Danner said parents should find a way to weave it into daily discussions about safety.

“We can teach our children to be aware without having to tell them at [ages] seven or six about drugs,” said Danner.

DISH’s recent finances

In early November, DISH announced that it will be laying off about 500 Colorado employees in the coming months.

It also reported its third-quarter

2023 finances, which showed revenue totaling $3.70 billion, down from $4.10 billion for the corresponding period in 2022. It reported losing $139 million in the quarter and Forbes reported its shares fell to a 25-year low.

When asked what would happen to the booster if DISH is financially no longer able to maintain it, Reester said the agreement between the city and DISH holds the company responsible.

“This is like a lot of public installations, whether it be art or otherwise,” Reester said. “We felt from

the beginning that it was critical for DISH to have maintenance in perpetuity, so our attorneys made sure that that was reflected in the agreement, so that the city didn’t end up with an unexpected future cost that we weren’t planning for.”

Reester said DISH was on board with this agreement from the beginning.

He said that in the case of an acquisition, any potential successor companies would be responsible for the booster.

DISH Network has not responded to recent requests for

comment for this story.

Online posts show community members have expressed mixed reviews about the booster so far.

Some are excited about the opportunity to see the object up close, while others have deemed it ugly and out-of-place near the natural trails.

There has been a detour in place on Little’s Creek Trail and the Mary Carter Greenway near the exhibit for over two months, Reester said, and the trails will reopen when construction is complete.

a registered dietitian and physician for recommendations based on your individual health needs and specific health conditions, said Warren.

The five food groups are fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy.

Ideally, for the average healthy adult, half the plate should be fruits and vegetables.

Warren said it’s beneficial to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables (especially different colors) as they each contain different vitamins and minerals, this includes edible peels.

While vegetables contain potassium, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium, fruits contain vitamin C, which is essential for tissue growth, repair and healing.

Warren said people should avoid canned fruits and vegetables because they contain added sugars and sodium.

With grains, at least half should be whole grains. These include foods like brown rice and whole wheat bread.

In addition to magnesium and B vitamins being important for the nervous system and metabolism, whole grains are less refined and contain additional protein that helps manage blood sugar.

“Typically the way our blood sugar works,” said Warren. “When we have a refined grain, such as white bread, our blood sugar shoots up and then it shoots down fast.”

When a whole grain is added, it has the additional protein and fiber content that allows the blood sugar to slowly rise, plateau and lower. This gives the body a bit more control.

Among the many benefits of proteins, they also include B vitamins, which helps build tissue and blood cells.

Vegetarian proteins include beans, nuts, seeds and soy.

“When we look at these plant based sources of protein,” said Warren.

“They’re high in fat soluble fiber, which

can help manage cholesterol but also help with blood sugar control.”

Blood sugar control can also be managed by ensuring you are not eating one component of food at a time.

This includes snacking. By adding a protein source to a snack, such as a low fat cheese or peanut butter, the protein source can pair with the carbohydrate and gently release blood sugar through the bloodstream.

If lactose intolerant, Warren said people can choose lactose free products or fortified dairy alternatives as well as low fat or fat free options for reduced intake of saturated fats.

Additionally, some foods such as fruits contain natural sugar and fiber, which helps the body absorb sugar at a slower and desirable rate, said Warren.

Many processed foods that contain added sugars are absorbed faster and can result in blood pressure spikes.

What to look for

According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, portion siz-

es have grown over the past 20 years.

Many foods that serve as a single portion contain multiple servings.

While the USDA MyPlate is a helpful guide in knowing how many servings to have in each food group, Warren suggested the use of Berkeley, the University of California’s handy guide to “How big is one serving?” This can be found at https://rb.gy/wqbsfa.

The number one thing to look at on a nutrition facts label is the serving size, said Warren as it indicates an appropriate amount to eat at once and everything listed in subsequent rows is reflective of that specific amount.

“What you need to look for on a nutrition label is specific to your personal health and nutrition goals,” said Warren.

Therefore, common things to be aware of are calorie intake when being mindful of weight, saturated fat content in regards to heart disease, sodium levels in terms of high blood pressure or heart failure and added sugar for preventing diabetes.

sadness and other challenging emotions. It simply means that in our toughest moments, we still acknowledge the good, no matter how small.

We find reasons for hope. Beyond a mindset, gratitude must translate into action. Writing thank you notes, helping neighbors, donating to charity — these deeds reinforce gratitude. When we share our gifts with others, it multiplies joy. A lifestyle of gratitude is generous and outwardfocused.

As we model gratitude, those around us catch the spirit. Our gratitude creates ripples, inspiring loved ones to see blessings too. Even strangers sense our joy and light.

Gratitude is contagious.

Gratitude connects us to something larger than ourselves. It is an antidote to entitlement, pride, and selfishness. Gratitude reminds us that all good things are gifts we could not earn or create alone. It grounds us in humility.

Practicing gratitude daily trains our brain to focus on the positive.

Over time, we become less prone to anxiety and depression. Choosing grateful thoughts over resentful ones makes relationships, work, and everyday stresses more enjoyable.

We stop taking the good things for granted.

Beyond a mindset, gratitude must become an action. Keeping a gratitude journal where we record a few things we’re thankful for each day etches gratitude deeper. Speaking our thanks aloud to others reinforces the habit. When gratitude permeates our mind, words, and deeds, its

Living out our life’s passion and purpose gratefully brings us joy, but even more, it is an act of faith. It reminds us we are not alone and that a loving God is looking out for us.

Gratitude acknowledges all we’ve been given, every breath, every meal, every embrace. An attitude of gratitude keeps us mindful of the blessings that surround us. And when we appreciate those blessings, it is easier to go out and be a blessing to others.

There is always something to be grateful for if we intentionally look for it. Gratitude shifts our focus from lack to abundance. It allows us to approach each day with optimism and hope. We become a force of light in a world that needs more joy.

This Thanksgiving, take time to reflect on reasons to be grateful. But even more importantly, commit to making gratitude a daily habit. Let
