THE SEASON FOR SHARING

Microgrid scheme would add stability to rural power supply BY BELEN WARD BWARD@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

United Power is looking for a more stable energy grid in case of a power outage, so its asking companies that are interested in investing or are experts in the microgrid, according to a press release. “United Power has a long record of investing in a variety of innovative technologies to learn more about how these systems work and how they can help us serve our members more reliability or reduce costs,” said Dean Hubbuck, chief energy resource officer, in the statement. “We have been discussing the viability of a microgrid project for some time now and want to find a partner willing to invest both money and expertise into this pilot venture.” The microgrid technology is a selfcontained power system utilizing battery and solar or other energy resources in a service area, the statement said. Most communities are served by one single transmission line -- the main grid. The microgrid is detached from the main electric grid during an outage. It is used as backup energy using local resources, for instance battery storage, small generators and renewables such as solar and wind farms. It keeps the power flowing in communities when extreme weather causes the main grid to go Every year before Thanksgiving, First United Methodist Church in Fort Lupton and the Fort Lupton Food and Clothing Bank provide community down. The microgrid is supported members boxes.
