After 10 months of serving as an Arapahoe county commissioner, Leslie Summey said the biggest thing she has learned is that commissioners are involved in every aspect of the county. “If it says ‘county,’ it’s our lane,” she said. “It really is so much of everything. But I love it. I love every moment of it.” Elected in 2022, Summey serves District 4, which includes the unincorporated area in north Arapahoe County and portions of Aurora. She is the first Black commissioner in Arapahoe County and one of three military veterans on the board. In addition, she is a mother of five and the wife of a veteran. Summey grew up in El Paso County and spent her childhood visiting her aunt and uncle, who lived in Arapahoe County. After serving in the U.S. Navy, meeting her husband and having some children, she returned to the area to help her aunt and uncle as they aged. Her family then moved into their house. She started to get involved in the political scene because she thinks civic responsibility is important. SEE SUMMEY, P8
