The Elizabeth School District held a special meeting on May 22 that included discussion of the in-progress master plan, an ongoing project to tackle the growth in the district’s student population. Representatives from RTA Architects and Western Demographics gave presentations to the school board. There has been a steady increase in the Elizabeth and northwestern Elbert County population in recent years, along with the start of the area’s 21st-century baby boom in 2012. Currently, both elementary schools are at or nearing capacity, creating a dire need for more space. Singing Hills Elementary capacity: 499; 2023 enrollment: 495 Running Creek Elementary capacity: 434; 2023 enrollment: 382 Elizabeth Middle School capacity: 621; 2023 enrollment: 411 Elizabeth High School capacity: 941; 2023 enrollment: 672 Shannon Bingham with Western Demographics analyzed several factors to determine the student population trends through 2030. On May 1, the Elizabeth Board of Trustees announced the selection of Jeff Engel as chief of the Elizabeth Police Department. Engel served as the interim police chief from Jan. 30
until being selected for the permanent position. According to the trustees’ official announcement, “Chief Engel was selected with the assistance of Lynn Johnson and Jerry Williams with the firm of KRW Associates from a total of 23 highly qualified candidates from across Colorado and the United States.” On May 17, the Elbert County News sat down for an interview with Engel at the Elizabeth Police Department.
