During the peak snow removal season, the county averages 14 plow operators; right now it has eight employed. Public Works Division Director Karl Schell said this will likely create a slower response time when snow flies.

“We may have a longer response time to get to some of the secondary roads,” Schell said. “We have been working on rerouting some of the snow routes that we do have, and we are really going to have to reel that in a bit, and work on all the primary roads and the bus routes first.”

It is telling to note how some American morality squads in the guise ofcertain school boards, whose main purpose ought to be focused on creating and enhancing an educational structure that maximizes the full learning capacity of every student, hide behind the shibboleth that they are not banning books, but instead “removing them from approved reading lists.” Their explanation is a cowardly euphemism, a distinction without a difference. It simply changes a term or phrase to make the act sound acceptable, even benign, but without lessening its intention. Like saying “frigging” in lieu of hurling the f-bomb. Both mean copulating, but frigging has a venial-sin tone much like saying “gosh dang it” in lieu of you

Nafisi had been raised during the reign of the ousted Shah who, despite his autocratic rule, allowed the liberal air of the West to permeate Iranian society. After earning her degrees at American universities, she returned to Iran after the 1979 Revolution and faced immediate scrutiny. Despite enormous pressure exerted on her to wear the traditional garb proscribed by the autocratic male rulers and to cease teaching Western literature, Nafisi refused to buckle. In so doing, she says, “they and their egregious actreceive less parent awareness of what has been done.”

To find out, Tahoe National Forest measured the top speeds reached by intermediate and advanced riders using both kinds of bikes. Differences on the downhills were small. On uphills, traditional bikers averaged 5-8 mph, while electric mountain bikes traveled 8-13 mph. This was a difference, but not enough of a difference to cause more accidents, especially if bikers alert others to their presence and ride in control.

In 2015, the International Mountain Bike Association studied the environmental impacts of mountain bikes, both electric and self-propelled, and found no appreciable differences between the two in terms of soil displacement on trails. The first time I saw an electric bike — better known as an ebike — I was struggling up a hill. Suddenly, a silver-haired man came whizzing by in regular city clothes. I felt a wave of envy as he left me in the dust.

So, what are the impacts of electric mountain bikes. Do they harm trails, or cause more accidents?

PM2.5 particle pollution is limited by regulations, and each particle is about 1/70th the diameter of a hu man hair. The particles are emitted by car and truck fossil fuel exhaust, coal-fired power plants or chemical

The CU study piggybacked on a mother’s milk study by genetically analyzing fecal samples from 103 primarily Latino infants in Los An geles. Alderete learned of the cohort

But decades of regulation are just starting to have an impact, and low-income neighborhoods near refineries, power plants and busy highways are much more exposed than others. Bad wildfire seasons like those in 2020 and 2021 wipe out a lot of progress.

The research also looked at mark ers from slightly larger particles, PM10, and nitrogen dioxide, primar ily a vehicle-related emission.

The researchers have also received funding and approval to follow the Southern California babies through six years, to check on the long-term impacts of their gut biome findings.

The results speak to a crucial age of development where the environ ment “sticks with you,” the CU researchers say. They talked about the study in a week of record heat in Denver and much of Colorado, and where state officials called another series of Ozone Action Day Alerts cautioning those in urban areas vulnerable to some forms of air pol lution.“Iwant to be able to arm indi viduals and communities with the information needed to fight for change,” said Tanya Alderete, study co-author and assistant professor of integrative physiology at the University of Colorado.

Here in Colorado, where we have persistent air pollution problems, this study in creases the urgency of taking swift action to reduce pollution — espe cially in the most impacted commu nities.”Theinfant gut collection of mi crobes is largely a blank slate until influenced by breast milk, solid food, the environment, any medicine intake, and other factors, according to the CU researchers. Beneficial microbes work to build appetite, immunity, insulin control and brain functions. But “bad” microbes can influence asthma, Type 2 diabetes and other lifelong issues.

“We’re going to also be consider ing individual behavioral factors as well as the environment,” Alde rete said. “If there is this associa tion with air pollution and the gut bacteria, how long does that persist? Do we see that over the course of development and the question is

Those exposed to the most PM10, slightly larger particles, had 85% more of a bacterium associated with inflam mation.Alderete’s earlier research on air pollution and microbes looked at about 50 young adults, showing that air pollution exposure from nearby high-traffic roads “was associated with bacteria in the gut,” she said. “And those bacteria had been linked with obesity, Type 2 diabetes and insulinThosesensitivity.”results,Alderete said, have since been replicated in a larger sample of young adults.

Little has been consistent during the coronavirus pandemic in Colorado, but this has: Fall is COVID season.Inboth 2020 and 2021, as kids returned to classes and pumpkinspiced lattes emerged from their caffeinated hidey-holes, COVID cases began to rise in the state. By this time last year, reports of new coronavirus infections had already been climbing for more than a month. In 2020, infections began rising in the first week of September. In both years, the trends peaked in November in Colorado, part of a mysterious seasonality to the rhythm of the virus.

But it’s possible that this year, just maybe, will defy the trend, said Dr. Jonathan Samet, the dean of the Colorado School of Public Health. Samet, who is part of a team that tracks data to create projections about the pandemic’s course, said he isn’t seeing any worrisome signs in the numbers he’s following.

Colorado reported about 6,200 new coronavirus infections last week, a decline of more than 1,000 cases from the week prior. There were 464 patients admitted to the hospital with coronavirus infections last week, down by about 4% from the week

Fall is Covid season in Colorado

“Everything is going in the right direction,” he said. “Hospitalizations are down. Wastewater levels are down. Percent positivity (of COVID tests) is down. So as we head into the fall, we are in good shape.”

Accordingbefore. to state data, 53% of those hospitalized with the virus are unvaccinated — though that number doesn’t tell the full story because only about 63% of the people currently in the hospital with COVID are there because of their COVID symptoms. The state does

The reason Samet feels reasonably confident that these positive

trends will continue is that the state has been taking a beating from the omicron gang of coronavirus variants for the past nine months and, before that, dealt with a punishing wave of infections caused by the delta

Thosevariant.successive waves mean a lot of folks in Colorado have been exposed or been infected in the past year, giving the state a level of immunity that is also bolstered by new vaccinations for young kids and booster shots for older adults.

In Samet’s view, that level of community immunity should be able to stave off the fall surge that Colorado saw in 2020 and 2021 — at least for a couple more months, if not“Wherelonger.the prediction becomes uncertain is when we look out beyond early to mid-October and the what-if a new variant arrives, which is always a concern,” Samet said. “We keep generating them.”

Dr. Rachel Herlihy, the state epidemiologist, said last week the state is seeing “a sustained decline

in cases.” The infections that are occurring are largely due to the omicron BA.5 variant, she said. But Colorado has seen newer variants

The state has confirmed a smattering of infections from the BA.4.6 variant, and the BA.2.75 variant has been detected in wastewater samples, indicating it may be spreading, as well. Samet said those variants bear watching. But, so far, they haven’t shown signs of being monsters, he said.

Updated COVID-19 boosters are being rolled out at pharmacies and clinics in Colorado. Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment officials expect the updated boosters to become more widely available in the state.

“There’s not a delta-type situation on the horizon right now,” he said, referencing the delta variant, which gained steam at this time last year.

And Samet said there’s another reason for optimism this fall: Just because cases have surged the previous two years doesn’t

COVID

“This is just another very easy step that you can take to protect yourself,” he said. Polis noted that the pandemic has claimed about 13,600 Colorado lives and that COVID-19 “has a much lower hospitalization rate and an extremely low death rate, if you are fully vaccinated.”

But there’s also a lot we don’t know about how and when COVID spreads. After all, while the pandemic seems interminable, our studying of COVID has been relatively brief.

“We really only have two falls under our belt,” Samet said. “I would be careful about generalizing.”
