Commerce City council members raised questions around concept plans, accessibility and security with a proposed fourth high school in the 27J School District during a study session on Jan. 22 where two “concept plans” were reviewed. Currently, three high schools are in 27J: Brighton High School, Prairie View High School and Eagle Ridge Academy. Even before plans were detailed, council members questioned the need for the facility. “Are we even in a position to open another school, considering so many schools are closing these days?” asked councilmember Sean
Ford, citing the closures in the Jefferson County and Denver school districts. Since 2021, Jeffco has closed 21 schools due to declining enrollment. Denver closed three small schools in 2023 after communities balked at an analysis that suggested 15 schools should be shuttered. Proponents responded that the new school would be in closer proximity to more Commerce City-area students, enhancing walkability and reducing reliance on busing. “Kids already live in these neighborhoods,” said Terry Lucero, Chief Operations Officer at 27J. “Conceptually, what I can tell you is kids are going to want to get to that school, and they’re going to want to take the
shortest route possible to get there.” The proposed high school, at 98th Avenue and Reunion Parkway, would begin construction in April 2025 with an anticipated opening date of August 2027. The project, which would sprawl across 48.6 acres, currently has a budget of $126 million, but the 27J team would like to raise that budget to $138 million. Every year they delay, construction costs increase by an additional $12 million, Lucero said, citing present enrollment needs and increasing construction costs. “Timing is critically important here. Every year it costs us more,” he said.

The three men running for the Republican nomination to take on Democrat Yadira Caraveo in November’s general election were nearly in lockstep with each other in Thursday night’s debate at the Fort Lupton Community Center. GOP candidates Joe Andujo, Gabe Evans and Scott James all agreed that President Joe Biden is likely a crook and his policies has let the country’s southern border become porous and a national security issue. “One illegal crossing is too many… and we need to use a physical structure, a military grade security” to seal the border, said James, a Weld County Commissioner. The trio also said they would not support any efforts to allow genderaltering surgery for anyone under 18 years of age and would head up efforts to block the federal government from using Diversity, Equity Diversity policies for hiring. “DEI is destroying our country,” Andujo told an audience of over 200. “We should be a merit-based country.” Veteran delivery
But while the candidates agreed on a lot of substantive issues, Andujo veered differently from Evans and Scott in delivering his thoughts. Andujo, who has never run for office, stumbled at times in talking to the audience. SEE CANDIDATES, P11
