Year in photos: Foothills BY DEB HURLEY BROBST DBROBST@COLORADOCOMMUNITYMEDIA.COM

2023 was a year of communities in the foothills jumping in head first as they hosted festivals, fought against development, mitigated against wildfire and more. The Canyon Courier brought stories of history such as the centennials of Indian Hills, Kittredge and the Center Stage theater — and the three not only celebrated their heritage but their importance to the community. It was the year that voters in the Elk Creek Fire Protection District stopped Elk Creek from consolidating with the Inter-Canyon and North Fork fire departments. It was also the year that Evergreen Park & Recreation District voters approved extending a property tax to be used primarily for overdue maintenance. Residents worked to stop a proposed development on Hilltop Drive in Evergreen and a bike park on Shadow Mountain Drive. It appears the Hilltop Drive development is not moving forward, but the Shadow Mountain Bike Park proposal is still going through the Jeffco Planning & Zoning process and should reach the Planning Commission for review
