Homeowners can delay property tax payments

If you’re staring at your property tax bill and having a meltdown, a Colorado program might offer you relief.

The state’s Property Tax Deferral Program allows homeowners to push their property tax payment down the road, potentially for years — depending on eligibility.

“Anytime we can keep folks in their homes and help them find tax relief at the same time is a win for Coloradans,” Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young said in a prepared statement.

Homeowners can delay, or “defer,” tax payment for as long as they own their home. The program charges interest — or a slow yearly increase — in the amount of taxes you owe.

Recreation amenities getting a lift Brighton considers replacing water slide, updating BJAA tennis courts

Brighton Recreation Center’s swimming pool slide, closed for more than a year, could be torn down and replaced this summer if City Councilors agree.

The slide was built in 1992, a big part of the recreation center when it first opened, and the stairs were replaced in 2013. Since then, the high humidity and chlorine from the pool have corroded the slide’s

supports and the stairs leading up, said Carleen Watts, Brighton’s assistant recreation director. The slide was closed in January 2023.

“Normal maintenance and inspections, weekly, daily and even monthly, take place. Indoor aquatic slides usually last about 25 years,” Watts said. “This slide is at 30 years now, so it has outlived its lifespan and that’s why we are seeing the corrosive environment we are seeing right now.”

Councilors are scheduled to vote on replacing the slide at their Feb. 20 meeting.

Watts said Brighton normally closes the entire recreation center in August and September for normal maintenance, sending the center’s patrons to the nearby centers in other communities. She said plans call for replacing the slide

during that closing.

Work would cost $476,200 to replace to demolish the old slide and remove it. The new slide would be fabricated out-of-state in June and July to be shipped to Brighton. The old slide will be removed in August and the one installed in September.

Watts said the costs could increase by another $200,000 depending on how well the footings for the slide have survived. Those footings will have to be inspected when the old slide has been removed.

“The vendor will have to evaluate those footings to determine if a replacement is necessary,” she said.

Tennis courts make room for pickleball

Councilors will also consider improvements to the tennis courts at the Brighton Japanese American Park, on East Long Peak Street.

Parks Planning, Development and Grants Manager Ryan Smith said

plans call for replacing the aging and cracked asphalt with a more durable post-tension concrete. The court will also be lined for both tennis and pickleball, leaving room for two tennis courts or four smaller pickleball courts on the site.

Smith said the recreation department is working to develop a lockbox system at the park, allowing residents to check out portable pickleball nets that can be rolled into place for the courts.

“You can technically play pickleball with tennis nets in place, if you lower them. But it is not ideal,” Smith said. “There is something like a three-inch difference between nets and the court is smaller and that’s why we are working with other nearby recreation agencies to come up with a good solution for mobile nets.”

That work is budgeted to cost $289,000, Smith said. If councilors agree at the Feb. 20 meeting, work would begin in August.

Most Sellers Don’t Know How to Interview a Listing Agent. Here’s Some Guidance.

Do you know what to look for in a listing agent, and the questions to ask during an agent’s listing presentation?

You’ll probably want to know their level of experience, competence and success in selling similar properties, hopefully within your city or neighborhood.

Like most people, not just Realtors, I monitor the real estate activity where I live, and I’m astonished how many homes are listed by agents I’ve never heard of. As I write, there are 70 active or pending listings within five miles of our office, represented by 66 different agents from 58 different real estate offices, only four of which are local to Golden. And despite practicing real estate here for 21 years, I only recognize the names of 18 of those 66 listing agents.

Where did the sellers find all those different agents to list their homes? Many, I suspect, are friends and family — every agent’s biggest “competitor.” In other cases, the seller just went under contract or closed on their replacement home elsewhere and was convinced by that listing agent to list their current home. Don’t fall for that. It’s not the best decision if that agent is unfamiliar with your neighborhood, lives far away, and is unable to show the home on short notice, answer questions from buyers, or keep your brochure box well stocked.

Or perhaps the agent sent a letter or taped a note to the homeowner’s door claiming to have a buyer for their home.

It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book.

The tactic got him or her an interview, in which the agent said that unfortunately the buyer found another home — but now the agent’s foot is in the door and the seller decides to list with him or her.

Let’s say, however, that you want to

interview listing agents and make a rational hiring decision. Good idea?

First, select two or three agents to interview based on their location and experience in your neighborhood. Second, study their active/sold listings to see (1) their geographic distribution and (2) how well their listings are presented on the MLS. To get an accurate history and profile of an agent you may need the help of another agent such as myself who has access to your MLS. You want to see each agent’s profile and their active, pending and sold listings.

Do a web search of the agents you’re considering. Read their profile, if they created one. Look at their current and sold listings. Click on one or more listing to see how they described the home on the MLS. Did they list all the rooms, not just bedrooms and bathrooms, and did they provide dimensions and descriptions, or did they just enter the mandatory fields?

Not all MLS fields are mandatory. For example, only half of those 70 listings I mentioned above indicate what direction the house faces, and 28 of them didn’t indicate whether or not there is fencing, both of which are optional fields. Only 20 of the 70 listings indicated whether it is in an incorporated or unincorporated location.

Those and other non-mandatory fields provide information that is important to many buyers. Since they are searchable fields, your listing may not be found by a buyer who has one of those optional fields as a search criterion.

Looking at an agent’s listings will answer the most important questions which you’d ask in person, but you won’t have to take their word — the truth is there in front of you. You’ll learn, for example,

whether they hired a professional photographer to shoot magazine quality photos or did their own point-and-shoot pictures, and whether they created a narrated video tour or just a slide show with music. Only 2 of those 70 listings (one of them mine) had the maximum number of photos uploaded to the MLS. And, although 37 of the 70 had URLs in the “virtual tour”

Keep in mind that the best indicator of how a listing agent will serve you is how they have served previous sellers. field, all but one of them were for either an interactive slideshow, a slideshow with a music track, or a gallery of pictures. The only one that was an live-action narrated video tour was my own listing! I’ve been doing narrated video tours for over 18 years and even gave a tutorial at my Realtor association to show other agents how easy it is to shoot and edit a video tour, yet I can only count on one hand the number of listing agents who are shooting videos now. It’s inexplicable to me why that is.

Having chosen who to interview, ask these questions of those you invite into your home for an interview:

What commission percentage do you charge? Keep in mind, there is no standard commission. It’s totally negotiable, and the industry average is in the mid-5’s, not 6%.

Will you reduce your commission if you don’t have to share it? Hopefully they include that in answering your first question. If you have to ask them, consider that a red flag. They hoped you wouldn’t ask. Only 17 of the 70 active or pending listings mentioned above indicate that they offer a “dual variable commission.” One of the things a fellow MLS member can research with their access to the MLS is whether that’s the established practice of the agent you’re interviewing.

Will you reduce your commission if I hire you to purchase my replacement home? (Again, did they volunteer that, or did you have to ask?)

Hopefully the candidate will have researched the market and will make a sound recommendation of listing price.

Beware of agents who inflate their suggested listing price so you will list with them.

When setting the appointment, ask the agent to bring a spreadsheet of their sold listings with dates, days on market, listing price and sold price.

Denver Zoo plans preserve in Weld County

A Weld County preserve could become a safe breeding space for endangered animals from around the world, according to a Denver Zoo plan.

The Denver Zoo is expanding, with the help of a donation from the Lembke family, to build a 570-acre preserve facility in Weld County, according to a Feb. 8 news release by the Denver Zoo. “The Lembke Family Preserve represents the start of a new era for Denver Zoo and will dramatically expand our capabilities for our animals and Colorado wildlife as we build it out in the coming years,” said Bert Vescolani, president and CEO of Denver Zoo. “We are deeply grateful to the Lembke family for their generosity and mutual understanding that saving wildlife for future generations requires a dedicated community of donors, members, partners and neighbors.”

Landowner Bob Lembke said the drive behind the gift to the Denver Zoo has been part of their family tradition since the late 1950s.

“Carol and I loved visiting the old zoo in childhood, and we took our kids there many times. It’s always a memorable family outing,” Lembke said. “With the stewardship provided to endangered species by the zoo through the preserve, we hope that the zoo can be part of our family for generations.”

Lembke is a native of Colorado who lived in Arapahoe County all his life, and his wife Carol moved to Colorado when she was 6.

Lembke said that he and Denver Zoo officials had shared some ideas about the expansion with some consultants.

“About 18 months ago, the consultants suggested we start talking about the zoo’s needs. I met with zoo leadership and staff, and my staff has met regularly with zoo staff. It has been a collaboration for some time in the making,” Lembke said.

As to the preserve’s exact location, Lembke said it’s being kept under wraps for now.

“I don’t believe the zoo wants to disclose the precise location, but it is located in a remote area,” Lembke said.

Closed to the public

Brian Aucone, conservation officer for the Denver Zoo, said the preserve will be closed to the public. It’s a space to expand the work the zoo has been doing at its Denver metro campus.

“It’s a scale that has a far greater impact on wildlife than we have been able to do with our current campus,” Aucone said. “We’ve done some great stuff here, but the space has been a bit of a limiting factor for us.”

The Lembke Family Preserve would be built in two phases. The first phase is building a space for the zoo’s “Species Survival Plans,” the current breeding program for raising animal

Aucone said they have yet to determine the species that will be at the preserve. Phase one is really about supporting the work that they have on campus at the Denver Zoo. “If we need additional space for breeding, such as recommending the eastern Bongo as an example, when they get pushed away from their mother as they naturally would, it might be a place that we would move them temporarily at the preserve while we find another good zoo home for them,” Aucone said.

Allows expansion at Denver site

With the extra space, animals at the Denver Zoo can be temporarily moved to the preserve when the 84acre Denver Zoo works on habitat maintenance and renovations.

“If they doing construction here on the grounds trying to improve the habitat or do something new with their habitat, we could temporarily locate them in the Lembke family preserve during that period,” Aucone said In phase two, the zoo plans for the facility space to be used for conservation, such as breeding and wild reintroduction. Its great importance would be on species threatened or endangered in Colorado.

Aucone said the future is to scale up some of our conservation breeding and, potentially, release programs with those who will partner with Colorado Parks and Wildlife or the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which they determined.

“There any number of potential possibilities, and we’re working with our partners in those organizations to talk about how we could work with them and prioritize that space,” Aucone said.

Aucone said they don’t know the exact species that will be at the preserve yet.

“The zoo seeks other passionate donors to support its animal care, wildlife conservation, new facilities and habitats, and educational experiences.”

Brighton grad makes a mark at the Grammys Trumpet player working to release his third album, ‘Darkness Within’

“You had to plan it out and give everyone a fair listen of their album. It took me months to listen,” Trinidad said.

Next is the final round, and he’s given a say as to which of the selected musicians ends up on TV as the Best Album and Song.

“That round took less time because it’s condensed down,” he said.

“It was a lot of fun and a lot of work to listen to that much. But it was it was fun.”

Once Trinidad submitted his votes, he received an email to reserve his tickets to the show and headed to Los Angeles.

“It was a dream come true, Trinidad said.

Joshua Trinidad, a Denver trumpet player who grew up in Brighton, had a dream come true, helping to select the winners at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards earlier this month.

Trinidad said he grew up watching the Grammys with his family.

“When I got there, I honestly felt like, do I belong here?” Trinidad said. “A lot of times in my life with music, I’ve always felt despair. But since I was supposed to be there, I was excited at that moment.”

Trinidad said he started playing trumpet at age 7, and his family always watched the Grammys. He remembers being amazed by all the musicians’ coordination, and he liked the symphony and the brass sections and people singing and dancing.

“I said this is beautiful, and my dad said you could do that someday and be there someday, and I said yeah, okay, Dad,” Trinidad said. “I got to go. When my parents found out, they were so proud of me.”

Trinidad said a friend of his, a piano player who they grew up in college, recommended him as a voting member for the Grammys a year ago in January.

He received an email to fill out a 12-page application about his career, asking how he contributed in

a way they saw fit. He also needed another recommendation from another person.

“If the council sees that you’re fit to vote, they permit you to vote,” he said. “So, after getting officially nominated to be part of the Recording Academy, it took six months to hear back.”

Trinidad grew up in Brighton. He attended South Elementary, Vikan Middle School, and Brighton High School. He said his teachers helped guide his career.

“The beautiful thread between those three schools is the top-notch music teachers. I didn’t go to any art school or Denver School of the Arts, but the education I got from my teachers growing up here was just as good, if not better; I was lucky,” Trinidad said.

As a little boy, Trinidad loved music. He knew from the second time he picked up an instrument at 7years old, that he’d found his niche.

The first time, he’d picked up a saxophone.

Brighton invites artists to transform traffic boxes

The City of Brighton invites artists to embark on an exciting endeavor— transforming traffic signal boxes into captivating public art installations across the community. These creatively wrapped boxes aim to enhance neighborhood identity, turn ordinary spaces into creative landmarks, and encourage engaging conversations within our community.

Six traffic signal boxes have been strategically selected for this project, ensuring a widespread and accessible showcase for the selected artworks.

Artwork will be on display for at least two years.

The call is open to individual artists, artist teams or community groups with a designated lead artist. Professional and non-professional artists, including emerging artists and students, may apply. Submissions will be divided into two categories for selection: 18 and older (adult) and 17 and under (youth). At least one traffic box will be exclusive to the youth category, however, more may be selected by the judging committee.

Six pieces of art will be selected and placed on weather-resistant vinyl printing. Each artist or artist team will receive a $500 honorarium. All artists must reside or work in the Denver metro area.

County seeks Healthy Farmers Markets input

Adams County is looking for feedback and opinions regarding the series of farmers markets they helped offer in 2023. Information from an online survey, located at https://bit.ly/4879uzr, will help determine how the markets will operate in 2024.

In 2023, the Adams County Health Department and Human Services partnered to provide Healthy Farmers Markets for residents. The departments are planning to provide those again in 2024, and they’d like to hear from you.

The county helped schedule the markets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Anythink Library Wright Farms and Huron Street branches. The survey asks about location preferences, dates and timing preferences and what kinds of offerings and other services should be offered.

Weld County adds high-tech watermark to paper ballots Unique features meant to make November’s ballots more secure

“We are doing the work for our voters and our peers,” said Weld County Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes. “We are working closely with our vendor to level up the security of our ballots.”

Koppes said the county first debuted the technology in November 2023 ballots. It features watermarks added to the paper stock the ballots are printed on. According to election office officials, Weld County currently has 222,064 active registered voters.

Koppes said she was eager to

help pilot the new, more secure ballots incorporating trademarked “GHOSTmark” technology used by California voting security firm ProVoteSolutions.

The paper stock for ballots includes high-resolution images that are only visible under special equipment.

“We are glad to have a partner willing to work with us to push the envelope on heightened security, “ Koppes said. “Election confidence needs to be high because voting is our biggest right and privilege.

Along with the other security measures, adding the GHOSTmark takes our election’s security, transparency, and integrity to the next level. It was a great success.”

Confident courage driven by abundant resilience

R

ecurrent cycles of failure often drain our reservoir of courage.

But cultivating gritty resilience, the ability to rebound after defeat, makes all the WINNING difference. When we know our worth reWORDS mains unchanged, confidence strengthens. And confident courage steps forward boldly, determined to learn from failure rather than retreat in shame.

Two weeks ago, Michael Norton this column visited what it means to be consistently confident and courageous. Last week we tackled the benefits of living with an abundance mentality as opposed to one of scarcity. Now, we let’s talk about the type confident courage that is driven by abundant resilience.

Today’s leadership often wrestles with the lack of resilience of their younger team members. The first hints of a struggle or a project that is too difficult seems to shut people down. The younger sales professional who cannot deal with rejection is chipping away at the character and foundation of grittiness and resilience that had made their company famous and successful. This is a societal issue just as much as it is a corporate problem.

Resilience is built through small daily choices to show up again after setbacks. We reframe failures as lessons that equip us for next victory.

We silence cruel inner voices taunting our missteps. We affirm that within and around us lies power to press on. Resilience believes better timing is coming. Resilience believes that for every no that a salesperson receives, there is a yes just around the corner.

As resilient confidence grows

through repeatedly getting back up, courage is ignited. We no longer fear the failure itself but rather squandering the growth opportunity it presents. Courage says, “Though I may stumble again, I know it will strengthen me, so I will keep pursuing my purpose.”

The courage fueled by resilience also drives innovation. In genius lies countless bad ideas. But the resilient genius tries new combinations while learning from each. They fail small and move quickly to succeed bigger. Confident they’ll eventually win, they persevere until the breakthrough.

Of course, acknowledging real suffering matters deeply. Some defeats deliver blows that do require grieving. Resilience is not dismissing agony but insisting present pain will not have the final say. Light still flickers in the darkness if we have eyes to see.

When confident courage is driven by gritty, hard-won resilience, we become unstoppable forces for good.

Failures remain inevitable but can no longer chain us. We rise stronger, bolder and wiser.

Life often delivers unexpected blows that tempt us to retreat in selfpity. But adopting an abundance

mentality while embracing opportunities in life despite real limitations empowers relentless resilience. Believing we already have more than enough fortifies us to endure seasons of scarcity and keep pursuing purpose.

Resilience is the ability to rebound after adversity, to bend but not break.

Resilient people grieve loss genuinely while insisting present turmoil will not dictate the future. Progress may require a circuitous route, but they keep marching forward.

Abundance thinking provides the mental framework and spiritual strength to persevere. Despite current shortfalls, it recalls times of surplus, remembering that seasons change. Abundance acknowledges “enough” looks different across life’s terrain. Where abundant resilience abounds, hope is instilled.

An abundance mentality also combats victim mindsets that paralyze resilience. Scarcity thinking fixates on how life has damaged us. But abundance declares we possess everything needed, however hidden or dormant, to recover and thrive again.

It empowers personal responsibility amid hardship, it fuels resilience.

Of course, positive thinking alone

cannot erase real suffering or constraints. But abundance provides perspective that setbacks are often setups for greater impact. With this long-view lens, we turn stumbling blocks into steppingstones. Our trajectory trends upward even while sometimes moving sideways.

Abundance thinking combined with bold faith and courageous action transforms us from victims into victors. We become forces for revival, equipped to lead others from dormancy to destiny.

In a world where many focus on the barriers to success and the negative forces of life that seem to surround them, there are many who look for the opportunity amid the challenge.

Who is eligible

Colorado’s deferral program has traditionally helped seniors and active military personnel, but it was expanded last year to provide relief to homeowners affected by increased property taxes for the tax years including and between 2020 to 2023. (2023 property taxes are what you’re billed for this year.)

The application period closes on April 1. Homeowners who aren’t seniors or active military can apply under different criteria — they’re eligible if their property taxes increased above what the program calls a “growth cap.”

The tax-growth cap is met when the current year’s property tax amount has increased 4% or more compared to the average of the two preceding tax years’ amounts.

The program does not exempt homeowners from paying taxes but, rather, serves as a loan that a homeowner pays later.

Seniors and active military can defer for as long as they own their home and they reapply for deferral each year. Others applying under the tax growth-based eligibility can defer for as long as they own their home and reapply each year — as long as the amount being deferred

For example, if you applied last year and were granted a $6,000 deferral and then apply again this year, only $4,000 more could be deferred.

Under the program, homeowners don’t have to pay any portion of their deferred tax amount — including interest — so long as they continue to reapply, according to the Colorado Department of the Treasury.

“As long as the homeowner reapplies each year, they don’t have to pay until they don’t apply,” said Sheena Kadi, spokesperson for the department.

As winter’s cold permeates throughout Colorado, folks may find themselves craving the warm comfort of soup.

Sunday Pho Khang Manager Henri Ly said the secret to his restaurant’s pho — served alongside Banh Mi and other Vietnamese staples at the family-owned eatery — is using fresh ingredients and going slow.

“We do not use powder at all,” Ly said. “We use all beef bone and slow simmer for 16 hours. We have six pots in the back. That’s what we’re known for — the broth. It’s a family-owned business; everyone that works here is mom, dad, aunt, grandma.”

Sunday Mi Tierra Caliente owner Ayax Silva said Pozole is a centuriesold soup that’s been made in his native Michoacán, Mexico for hundreds of years.

“It’s a soup that’s been made in Mexico for centuries by the native people,” Silva said. “Tamales were also made by Mexican natives before the Spaniards came to Mexico. A lot of the traditional dishes have been served in Mexico for centuries.

“Every region of the country gives these dishes their own touch, and it changes from family to family,” Silva continued. “With Pozole there are different kinds; red Pozole — which we serve — there’s also white, cream, chicken Pozole. We use dried chili guajillo, made with pork and white hominy in Michoacán style. We serve it with radishes, cabbages, lime and pork chunks.”

Silva said Pozole is such a tradition in some Mexican states that restaurants serving it only operate on Thursdays and going to eat the dish is a family activity. Luckily for those of us in the Denver metro area,Mi Tierra Caliente serves Pozole every day.

While the local favorite might be better known for their pierogies, kielbasa or schnitzel, the Polish eatery also serves up Rosol; a Polish chicken noodle soup served with egg noodles. Rosol is defined by its clear broth and is served at both Pierogies Factory locations, in Wheat Ridge and Littleton.

Head Chef Jutta Dellert says Orgórkowa is “Everyone’s favorite” in the winter months and that to her knowledge, Cracovia is the only restaurant around that sells the traditional Polish soup.

“We use homemade pickles and we grind them,” Dellert said. “We sauté carrots, parsnip, leeks, onions and celery, and add that to a vegetable broth with pickled, flavored with vegeta; a polish spice. Then we add heavy cream.”

Dellert says the soup — along with everything else at Cracovia — is made from scratch.

“Nobody cooks from scratch anymore, but that’s what we do here,” Dellert said. “We do sauerkraut from scratch, all out sauces and everything. That’s what I love about this restaurant. It takes me four hours to make the goulash.”

Orgórkowa takes about an hour and a half to two hours to prepare, Dellert said — but that’s mostly thanks to chopping the vegetables.

the guy was trying to help me make a sound,” Trinidad said. “I couldn’t.

I thought I’d never played an instrument. I saw the trumpet on the way out and asked what’s that? I picked it up and made it sound.”

Trinidad had an exciting journey with his trumpet and got serious about playing it early in his high school career.

“My trumpet playing was important and made it into the high school honor bands,” Trinidad said.

Trinidad said he had planned to attend school in Greeley at UNC but was rejected.

“They said they didn’t see a music career in my life. I felt like quitting everything, and at 18, my path was carved out,” Trinidad said.

He was glum when came to school the following week, and his band teacher asked him what happened.

“He pulled some strings for me, got me to go to school at Western State College in Gunnison,” Trinidad said.

“I even got some scholarship money to go. It was great. I didn’t stay at Western, but it was an excellent place to rethink things, recalibrate, and went Metropolitan State University in Denver.”

It was an excellent move for Trinidad, and he said he had some of the best professors.

“It was meant to be. I graduated with a music degree,” Trinidad said. “I was told I could never do it, (but) I did it.”

Today, Trinidad is a trumpet player, composer, and producer. Trinidad plays in multiple styles of music, such as jazz, ambient, rock, electronic, and lo-fi, that are almost like soundtrack music.

“I would never call myself a true jazz musician by any means. It’s music you’d hear in a movie that is relaxing, spacey, echoing type trumpet,” he said. “I focus on a more creative approach with trumpet than what we’re used to.”

That means he’s found new ways to expand his instrument’s abilities.

“I connect my trumpet to guitar pedals, like what a guitarist would use,” he said. “I play through the microphone into the guitar pedals. And I get different sounds, such as an Echo delay.”

Norway to ‘In November’

Trinidad got the idea for his first album, “In November” while he was

touring the U.S. with a band. He and the group’s drummer spent a lot of time dreaming about their next gigs.

“I told him I would like to record in Europe,” Trinidad said. “He said, ‘Do it!’ I said, it’s not that easy and he said, ‘Do it’. So I did it and booked a studio in Norway in 2016.

While recording in Norway, Trinidad said he reached out to some of his favorite musicians, and they came, recording at this tiny rented house.

“We lived together for three, four days, recorded an album, the house was near the ocean, water would like to hit the glass and watched icebergs, it was so beautiful, it was a dream come true,” Trinidad said.

Trinidad said the recording did well.

“It moved me into a new level, taking a risk and going out there to Norway; I didn’t make money from it but learned a lot,” he said.

Trinidad’s next gig was in 2019; he was contacted by Arun Natarajan, Subcontinental Records label in Bangalore, India, who told him about an idea that he knew a famous electronic guy named Riatsu Umlaut. Natarajan said he would pay for them to work together.

“We put out an album right before COVID called “Lithium” and later during COVID, put together another album called “Sleeping With My Worries. We are working on our new album that will come out in the next couple of months,” Trinidad said.

Trinidad said when he was in LA for the Grammys, the album “Sleeping With My Worries” was nominated nominee for Best New Age Album of the Year at the World’s Entertainment Awards on Feb. 2.

Trinidad said they were invited to a party after the Grammys and saw one of his favorite jazz singers, Kurt Elling, performing.

“While in Los Angeles, I got the opportunity to look up one of my favorite trumpet players, Arturo Sandoval, and he invited me to his house; he’s an 11th-time Grammy Award-winning musician. The Grammys were fun my highlight of the trip was meeting him,” Trinidad said.

Trinidad has also recorded with Arun Natarajan with Sage Francis, Chicano Batman, Nathaniel Rateliff, Riatsu, Umlaut, and Bangalore, India.

Future

Trinidad said he is working on his next album, a mix of poetry and music. It’s called the “Darkness Within.”

It takes a thief Adams City’s Hernandez takes thievery to new heights

Fernanda Hernandez is a thief.

Plain and simple.

She admits it. She loves it.

And it’s legal.

Hernandez was a senior guard for the Adams City High School girls basketball team this season. In addition to her thefts (averaging eight steals per game, which was enough to break the school record for steals in one season), she scored an average of seven points per game. That went with her nine rebounds per contest and dishing out 4.5 assists per game.

Her 170 steals put her in the top 24 in the nation, according to MaxPreps, and atop the stat sheet in both the state of Colorado and in class 5A. Despite those numbers and the school record, her first love is soccer.

She plans to play for the Eagles this spring.

“I’m more engaged in basketball.

I found a family, a really nice bond with each of the girls,” she said. “It made me rethink my purpose. We have perfect bonds. Basketball was the one for me.”

The first step on the road to being an artist of steals is to keep an eye on the ball.

“Once it bounces, I’m ready to take it from the air, with another dribble,” she said. “With the way they are positioned, it’s easier to read the ball, their body language and everything they do. It can be difficult, but I can make it work.”

Hernandez said stealing the ball doesn’t necessarily depend on a player’s skill set.

“No. I read the ball,” she said. “Once the ball goes to the floor and they are dribbling, I read the next dribble they are going to take. So once it bounces up from the floor, I get ready to snatch the ball.”

She also reads passes by looking

at where the opponents’ eyes are; sometimes, it’s the positioning of the shoulder.

“It can be difficult (during a game), especially when I’m already tired,” she said. “I make it work. It started when I was a sophomore. I got into JV (junior varsity), then JV to varsity. I got more playing time than the point guard at that time.”

She scored her share of points for the Eagles, too.

“Stealing the ball is better,” Hernandez said. “It gives me an advantage to go up for the layup.”

Next stop

College wasn’t on her radar. She works at United Parcel Service before going to class.

Her high-school coach, James Rogers, convinced her to try college.

“I wasn’t planning on learning about college,” Hernandez said. “It was all because of him. I was planning on working, quit my job. He said to try it out and that ‘if you don’t like it, just leave.’”

Instead, Hernandez is heading to Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, Calif., about four hours southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada.

“It’s a new experience, a new environment,” she said. “I want to be somewhere new and out of Colorado. Trinidad State College was interested, but I’d already committed by then.”

She’s not sure what she wants to study just yet but is leaning toward dermatology.

“I’m interested in and looking forward to learning about the skin,” Hernandez said. “I’m not sure. It came on so fast.”

At first, Hernandez was scared of this new venture.

“I’m excited, knowing that I’m going to California to play basketball,” she said. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people and developing new skills.”

In closing

Hernandez offered some advice for athletes, present and future.

“I’d tell them ‘Go for it,’” she said.

“You only live once. You can’t go back to that moment. Don’t take anything for granted.”
