The task force charged with finding a long-term solution to Coloradans’ rising property tax bills after the failure of Proposition HH in the November election won’t include a key set of power players: people who are pursuing or already have measures on the 2024 ballot that would change the state’s property tax code.

The legislation forming the task force, passed by the Democratic majority at the Colorado Capitol during the special legislative session that wrapped up just before Thanksgiving, bars anyone who is a “designated representative” of a 2024 property tax ballot measure or who is a member of an issue committee that supports or opposes such an initiative from being one of the 19 appointees to the panel.

That includes activists and business leaders like Michael Fields, who runs Advance Colorado,

For any entrepreneur, the key is finding a good niche. That’s what happened to Fort Lupton sophomore Logan Campbell this summer.

“I drink a lot of soda and have never been a big fan of wasting stuff,” Campbell said.

The 16-year-old turned that desire into a going concern, picking empty cans at businesses and selling them to a recycling plant.

“They have this little place in Brighton on the side of the road that you can turn in aluminum cans in exchange for money,” Campbell said.

Card skimmers target Brighton grocers

Card skimmer thefts have gotten brazen in the last few weeks, hitting two Brighton King Soopers.

Multiple calls to the Brighton Police reported finding a skimmer placed over a standard register and another fitting over a card terminal at the selfcheckout.

The Brighton King Soopers stores at 500 E. Bromley Lane and at 100 North

50th Avenue, according to a Brighton Police in a Nov. 21 news release.

The illegal card reader devices were attached to the official point of sale credit card terminal, so when the card is inserted, it provides the financial data to the thief when you make a transaction payment.

Skimmers are challenging to detect because they have false keypads or card slot attachments. They can appear bigger than normal, so customers should be cautious if they look

bulky or suspicious, according to Brighton Police Department Representative Kylynn McTague.

“We have told the community that it is important to frequently review financial statements and transactions to spot unauthorized charges. It is also helpful to inspect card readers before use and feel if they are intact,” McTague said.

“If any part of the card reader or keypad is loose or out of alignment, or if something doesn’t seem right,

report it to store staff immediately.

If your account has been compromised, contact your card issuer.”

In-store cameras managed to capture photographs of two people suspected in placing the devices. The Brighton police are investigating the devices and need your help identifying these suspects.

Brighton volunteer receives a presidential honor

Brighton resident Kathleen Pierz received her fourth 2022 Presidential Volunteer Service Award for her years working with the nonprofit ShelterBox to help those impacted by war or natural disasters.

“It is nice to be recognized, but no one volunteers for the accolades - we do it to make a real difference in the lives of our fellow humans,” Pierz said.

Pierz served 250 volunteer hours in 2022 with ShelterBox. In addition to volunteering, she works as a court-appointed advocate (CASA) for kids in foster care. She is also an active Rotarian, a volunteer at Barr Lake with the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, and teaches Junior

Achievement classes.

ShelterBox is a global disaster relief organization that provides emergency shelter and household supplies for displaced people in Pierz Ukraine, Morocco, Syria, Libya, and many other countries.

“Because of the sacrifice and dedication of our supporters like Kathleen Pierz, ShelterBox provided lifesaving shelter and supplies to families made homeless by disaster, climate change and violence,” said Kerri Murray, President of ShelterBox USA.

The Presidential Volunteer Service Award was founded in 2003 by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation at the White House. It recognizes volunteers across the nation while inspiring others to volunteer.

According to officials, the Volunteer Service Award allows certified organizations to award dedicated volunteers who go above and beyond volunteers. The AmeriCorps Partnership Points of Light program manages the program.

In 2022, Pierz, volunteering with ShelterBox, provided supplies to 429,000 people in 11 countries, including those without homes impacted by the Ukraine war and the African drought.

Weld Republican makes pitch to replace Caraveo Scott James thinks he can cross political aisles to escape quagmire

Scott James said Wednesday his vast experience in local government will help him break through the glitzy quagmire that has swallowed federal lawmakers in Washington D.C. “People are tired of the show, they want somebody who can get things done,” said James, currently a Weld County Commissioner.

James is running for the Republi-

can nomination to take on incumbent Congresswoman Yadira Caraveo. A Democrat, Caraveo won the newly minted 8th Congressional District seat in 2022 by a narrow margin.

The race for the Eighth is attracting national attention, as it could decide the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.

James said the district - which includes parts of Weld, Adams and Larimer counties - is also evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats.

That plays to his strengths, James said, which includes crossing the political aisle to work with Democrats and independents.

“You have to do that in local government, and I’ve done that most of

my career,” he said. “You have to get things done.”

The sagging economy demands the biggest fix, James said.

“People can’t afford housing anymore, they can’t afford food, people are losing hope,” he said.

James’s opponents for the GOP nomination have zero to almost no experience in local government, James said.

“My experience in local government goes back 25 years,” he said.

“I can work with people to accomplish what needs to be done.”

Running against James for the Republican nomination is Joe Andujo, an Air Force veteran and a health insurance consultant and Gabe Evans, U.S Army veteran and former police officer. Evans was elected to

the Colorado House in November 2022 to represent District 48.

Prior to being county commissioner, James served on the Johnstown City Council and a term as mayor. He was also the former chair of the Weld County GOP and a radio host.

James on Wednesday was flanked by 20 Colorado county commissioners who endorsed his bid to unseat Caraveo.

Fremont County Commissioner Debbie Bell said she is backing James because of his grounded approach to government.

“He will bring back common sense to the government, something we have been lacking,” Bell said. “He understands that smaller government is better government.”

Seedorf appointed Chief Judge

Hon. Kyle Seedorf was appointed Chief Judge of the 17th Judicial District for Adams and Broomfield Counties, according to a news release on Nov. 27.

Colorado Supreme Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright appointed Judge Seedorf, who will take Hon. Donald S. Quick’s District Court bench on Jan. 23. Quick is retiring.

According to officials, Seedorf will serve as the district’s administrative head. He appoints the court executive, chief pro-

bation officer, and court clerk.

In addition, he will assist with personnel, financial, and casemanagement duties and oversee the court business to manage it productively and successfully.

Quick was appointed to the District Court bench in December 2014 and appointed as Chief Judge in December 2020, according to officials.

“Chief Judge Quick will be greatly missed as the administrative head of the 17th Judicial District and a respected leader within the Judicial Department,” Chief Justice Boatright said. “Over more than 30 years

Working on the bottleneck

With basic designs for widening the 104th Avenue bottleneck between Colorado Boulevard in Thornton and Highway 85 complete, work now begins to find money for complete designs and begin actual construction on the project.

“We don’t have funding to design the whole extent, but what we have can help us get more grants,” said Thornton Engineering Manager Dan Schlitz. “If we want to get more federal grants to complete the project, this is where we want to be.”

tween Colorado Boulevard in Thornton and the intersection with Highway 85 in Commerce City. Plans call for widening the road to five lanes — two lanes in either direction with a center turn lane or median.

Engineers have drawn basic maps of the entire project and they presented those at an open house meeting Nov. 29 at Thornton’s Carpenter Park Recreation Center.

Technically, the current designs are considered to be 30% level designs.

They show the basic layout of the road expansion, complete with new intersections, bike lanes and sidewalks, but lack the minute details such as rights of way, utilities, road grades and more.

“There’s a lot of detail that you get at the 30% level,” Thornton Engineer Pete Brezall said. “It gives you a good idea of the work and what the road will look like, your elevations and grades. But at the 100% level, you get to all the issues with the project.”

Work to get the 30% designs for the entire project cost $2 million, with $1.6 million in federal funds granted by the Denver Regional Council of Governments. Local governments split the rest, with Thornton paying $200,000 for the work and Adams County and Commerce City paying $100,000 each.

If full funding comes through, the project could get underway next year or in 2025.

“We have a lot of competition —the entire country,” Schlitz said. “There’s a lot of competition for that money because there are a lot of road that need fixing.”

Most of the road is already five lanes in both directions, including all portions west of Colorado Boulevard and east of Highway 85. The road narrows to two lanes, one in either direction, for 3.1 miles between Colorado and U.S. 85, creating a bottleneck and traffic slog.

Brezall, the project manager for the 104th Avenue widening work, said Thornton has full funding to go beyond the 30% level and complete the designs for about two-thirds of the total project, from Colorado Boulevard east about two miles to the South Platte River and the Thornton city limits.

“We don’t know how much the funding will actually be for the 100% designs until we get the word from (the Colorado Department of Transportation),” Brezall said.

From the South Platte River east, the road continues through incorporated Adams County and then to Commerce City.

“We’ve already done the widening up on the other side,” Commerce City Capital Improvement Projects Manager Michael McGoldrick said. “The road, 104th Avenue is four lanes east from U.S. 85 and has been for 15 years.”

Award-winning comedian Charlie Berens coming to Aims

Comedian Charlie Berens said he worked in local news before going into comedy. One common theme he found in his new career is how many people commented on his Wisconsin accent.

“This was a bit of an issue in news where the accent is supposed to be neutral for voice and on-camera reporters,” Berens said.

Berens, a best-selling author, Emmy-winning journalist, musician, and creator of the Manitowoc Minute, is bringing his “Good Old Fashioned Tour” to Aims Community College in February.

Berens is scheduled to perform Feb. 17 at the college Welcome Center Miller Auditorium.

Berens moved to Los Angeles where

he specialized in doing red-carpet reporting. He wasn’t a fan, however, so he decided to try stand-up comedy at night. That was when he found a good use for his accent.

“Instead of taking everyone’s advice on my accent and trying to fix it, I decided to double down on the Wisconsin accent and sensibility,” Berens said. “That was the basis of my video series, the Manitowoc Minute, and that online news show allowed me to start selling tickets.”

Open mic, nightly Berens said that growing up with a family of 12 kids, he had a natural sense of humor.

“Every night at the dinner table, it was an open mic, and the audience wasn’t always kind. My siblings and I would roast each other daily, which helped form my sense of humor,” Berens said.

Berens is a Wisconsin native and started his career with MTV News Choses or Lose. Then, they moved on to YouTube when they launched a news channel working in front and behind the camera.

Berens has quite a resume, working on Comedy Central, Fox, CBS, Funny or Die, TBS, Variety, and MTV News.

He also has a following with many social platforms, creating content with over 7.5 million followers.

2012 Berens hosted a Night Cap Comedy News show with Tribune Media.

In 2013, he won an Emmy for “The Cost of Water” while reporting for KDAF channel 33, a television station in Dallas and a metroplex outlet for the CW network.

Then, moved on, Berens started hosting the Manitowoc Minute comedy news show in 2017. Since then,

he has developed Midwest-focused comedy videos on social media platforms. He’s performed a comedy tour traveling the county with three soldout shows.

His talents don’t stop there. Berens partnered with Horseshoes & Hand Grenades Adam Greul, dropping Unthawed, a music comedy album. Musically, the album’s genre is bluegrass and country paired with Berens comedy. The combination was a hit, climbing to number one on the Billboard Bluegrass chart and number six on the Bluegrass Comedy chart.

Beren wrote his first book, “The Midwest Survival Guide,” released in November of 2021 and published by William Morrow, Harper Collins. The book became a hit in the New York Times Best Seller list.

Rocky Mountain Human Services wins Adams, Denver counties contract

The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy & Financing is redesigning its case management process, naming a Colorado firm to manage responses for Adams and Denver counties. The change began Nov. 1.

Colorado non-profit group Rocky Mountain Human Services will provide streamlined case management services to individuals with disabilities or other complex needs requiring long-term, home, and communitybased support.

The new contract is part of Colorado’s redesigned case management system intended to make it easier for people needing services to navigate the system and get the care they need.

It is designed to ensure that people have one place to go for questions and support and to improve the quality of care they receive.

“We are proud and honored to be selected as the Case Management Agency for Denver and Adams Counties,” said RMHS executive director Shari Repinski. “It’s essential to reduce the burden of a complex and siloed system of care by creating a more inclusive and streamlined Long Term Care system in Colorado that recognizes and caters to the diverse needs of individuals, regardless of their disability. Brighton Police Department now offering online reporting

Brighton Police Department has launched an online reporting system at its newly updated website at www. brightonco.gov/police.

The online reporting system allows community members to submit a report directly to the police department from their smartphone or computer.

It can be used to report criminal tampering, identity theft, lost property, theft, vandalism, and other matters.

All cases filed using the online reporting system will be reviewed by a police sergeant. This tool can only be used when the incident is not an emergency; no one was injured, no known suspects, and no physical evidence. All incidents that do not meet this criteria should be reported by calling our non-emergency line at 303-288-1535. Emergencies should always be reported by calling 911.

Thornton Winterfest: Come celebrate the season with the city’s annual holiday celebration through Dec. 10 at the Carpenter Park Fields, 108th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. The festival opens at 6:30 p.m.

Friday, and 10 a.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday and runs until 9 p.m. nightly.

The festival features Santa’s Village, with ice skating, ice carving, food vendors, a tree decorating contest, a beer garden and visits from Santa Claus himself. The city will also present a synchronized drone show set to holiday music on Friday night and holiday movies each night of the festival.

Other Saturday events include a breakfast with Santa at 7:30 a.m., a 10 a.m. Winterfest Fun Run 5k, a holiday marketplace and an 8:30 p.m. fireworks display.

Santa and the Slay: From the Makers of Motones & Jerseys, the show follows Santa as he takes a break from his hectic holiday schedule to host a variety show featuring music, comedy and great performances. Music ranges from classic carols to pop hits.

The show is at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 at Northglenn’s Parsons Theater, 1 East Memorial Parkway. Tickets range from $23 to $30 with discounts for seniors and the military.

the conservative political nonprofit behind a measure on the 2024 ballot that would cap annual property tax increases at 4%; Scott Wasserman, president of the Bell Policy Center, the liberal political nonprofit pursuing two ballot initiatives for next year that would counteract Fields’ proposal in part by raising property tax rates on more expensive homes; and Mike Kopp, the CEO of Colorado Concern, a nonprofit representing business leaders that wants to ask voters to roll back property valuations to their early pandemic levels and then limit future value increases.

“We didn’t want the commission to turn into a place where commissioners were just trying to advocate for their own ballot measure,” said Sen. Kyle Mullica, a Thornton Democrat and one of the prime sponsors of the task force bill.

But the decision to exclude people like Fields, Wasserman and Kopp from the task force, whose members will be bipartisan and represent different interests and different parts of the state, may make it harder to persuade voters in 2024 to adopt a change with longevity. If there are multiple, seemingly competing initiatives on next year’s ballot, they all run the risk of being rejected or, in a policy nightmare, passing in some wacky combination and upending state and local budgets.

Part of the reason Proposition HH, which would have offered at least 10 years of property tax relief, was rejected Nov. 7 was because it confused voters, proponents and opponents of the measure agree. The initiative’s failure forced Gov. Jared Polis to call the special session, during which lawmakers passed property tax relief for the 2023 tax year only. If a longer-term fix isn’t adopted, homeowners’ property tax bills will shoot up in 2024 and beyond.

The task force will have its hands full when it starts meeting next week.

A long-term solution to property taxes has proven elusive since 2020, when voters repealed the Gallagher Amendment, which prevented property tax bills from rising too quickly but caused government budget headaches. That’s because property taxes are so complicated and politically fraught.

Property taxes fund schools and local governments, including districts that operate everything from fire departments and water infrastructure to

libraries and parks. Even slight tweaks to the statewide property tax code can have big and disparate funding effects on state and local budgets. The fact that housing prices differ from region to region across Colorado make the problem ever more complex.

Wasserman, for one, thinks the provision governing who can be on the task force is “a fair parameter,” because anyone with a preconceived notion of what the property tax code should look like probably isn’t right for such a commission. That being said, he still thinks the task force’s work will be informed by the proposals offered by his group and others.

“I have to believe there will be crosspollination,” he said.

But Fields said he doesn’t “have a whole lot of faith” in the task force.

He thinks members of the panel will come to the work with ready-made ideas and are unlikely to budge from their positions. Schools and local districts, for instance, won’t want to see revenue reductions, while Republicans won’t want to cut into the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights surplus, which funds state taxpayer refunds, to offset the effect of the cuts on local governments.

“I think it’s unrealistic that you’re going to have people in there who are going to be swayed by conversation,” he said.

The reality is that the proposals offered by Wasserman, Fields and Kopp are meant as much to shape the property tax conversation as they are to be real solutions.

Fields has told The Colorado Sun he would pull his measure, Initiative 50, off the 2024 ballot if the legislature comes up with what he thinks is a suitable alternative. He said that would have to include some sort of a cap on annual property tax increases, which may be a nonstarter for Democrats.

Kopp, who didn’t respond to text messages seeking comment, has also suggested that Colorado Concern would back down if the legislature comes up with something else the nonprofit feels is adequate.

“Our filing today represents the beginning, not the end of the process,“ Kopp said earlier this month in a news release rolling out Colorado Concern’s proposal. “We look forward to working with leaders in the state Capitol and, more importantly, civic and business leaders outside of the legislative arena, to implement a plan that protects the taxpayers of this state.”

Initiative 50 is the only property tax ballot measure so far to qualify for the 2024 ballot.

Embracing what’s next in life

G

o as far as you can see; when you get there, you’ll be able to see farther.” - J.P. Morgan We have all probably lived in that moment of asking ourselves what’s WINNING next in life. Whether we are riding WORDS the wave of success and are looking toward a future goal, or just wondering if there is something bigger in store for us, we need to look beyond where we are today to see even further.

In speaking with a young and successful salesperson who had already reached 200% of his quota, I asked him about his expecMichael Norton tations for the last two months of the year, and what next year would look like. He shared two things with me.

He was certain he would bring in at least one or two more deals this year, and that no matter what the quota assigned to him, he will look further and hold himself accountable to reaching an even higher quota.

When life feels mundane, challenges loom large, or dreams seem out of reach, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut of discouragement. We lose sight of the bigger picture. But there is always something greater in store for each of us, if we open our eyes to see it.

The universe has grand plans that our limited human perspective cannot yet imagine. There are possibilities, adventures, and joys waiting around the corner that will dwarf current struggles. The next chapter contains wonder that we cannot possibly fathom.

Breakthroughs often follow breakdowns. In times of deep uncertainty, when we are tested most severely, we gain strength, wisdom and resilience that equip us for the journey ahead.

Hardships transform us. And progress is rarely linear. Sometimes we must move sideways or circle back before we can move forward. But each step leads somewhere. There are gifts hidden in every challenge.

The beauty is always there, though some days we notice it more than others. Love finds a way even through the darkest of nights. The sun rises again no matter how fierce the storm. You were created for more than you know. There is something bigger in store for you. Keep walking, even when the way is unclear.

Have faith that the universe is on your side. Your next triumph is already in motion.

The allure of the open road speaks to our deep human longing for adventure, exploration and new horizons. When we reach milestones or

transitions in life, that yearning for “what’s next?” revs its engines. Though the unknown can feel daunting, embracing that open road mindset unlocks our potential.

After achieving a long-sought-after goal, the question naturally arises — now what? We must rekindle our curiosity and set our sights on a new quest. Complacency is the enemy of growth.

There are always new skills to build, contributions to make, and parts of ourselves yet unrealized.

When a relationship ends, a job loss occurs, or the nest empties, it can feel like we’ve hit a dead end. But these openings are actually on-ramps to different routes. We regain the freedom to reinvent and redirect. Changing course realigns us with our soul’s true north.

On the open road of life, there will be detours and breakdowns. Plans sometimes unravel in spectacular fashion. But with resilience and optimism, we leverage obstacles to propel ourselves forward. In the rearview mirror, setbacks become signposts guiding us toward our purpose.

At every age and stage, embracing the unknown

with an open road mindset liberates us to evolve.

We uncover capacities we didn’t know we possessed. Each new horizon expands our perspective.

There is always adventure awaiting around the next bend. The journey holds more than you can imagine. Lean into the mystery. Accelerate into what’s next. The open road of life promises surprise, joy, and the thrill of chasing dreams yet dreamt.

helps him with transporting his collection. Kathy Davis, his grandma, got him a can crusher.

“The problem was it took forever to crush each can,” she said.

“We have truckloads of cans to take down there from contributions, so it takes time to crush all those cans.”

It’s one of the many things the 16-year-old Campbell does. He volunteers at the Fort Lupton Recreation Center Senior Center, setting up the tables and placemats on his days off from school. If he’s not there, you’ll find him working in a local garage

— one that belongs to a friend of his Dad. He helps keep the place neat — while collecting his cans.

Campbell said he started saving the cans in his garage. They know it’s time to turn his collection in when they have a full truckload.

“We do a collection weekly or every two weeks,” Davis said.

‘No stopping him’ It’s remarkable for Campbell, who has been diagnosed as autistic.

“He does pretty well,” Andrea Davis, his mom, said. “He has some good ideas and good thoughts and is passionate about how he wants to change things. When he gets ideas, sets his mind to it, and just goes after it. There’s no stopping him.”

His grandparents are even more

proud.

“He helped my neighbors, friends, and me,” Grandma Kathy Davis said. “He always is the first to help them. I can’t say enough about him.

I’m proud of him. He is turning into quite the young man.”

One of Campbell’s regular can collection stops is Dales Pharmacy. Owner Huy Duong said he has known Campbell since he was a little kid. The boy is around town a lot and is always busy and always busy.

“You get kids that age are causing trouble, but he stays out of trouble,” Duong said. “We have been working together for six months. It’s good to keep kids busy.”

Bill Harvey, Logan’s uncle from Ohio said he’s proud to have been a

part of his life, too. Getting to know his nephew and his autism has been an important lesson, Harvey said.

“Although I haven’t been a big part of his life, I have seen him change and develop,” Harvey said. “It’s refreshing to see a young man with his ability and the path he’s endured and his journey. It’s just been a pleasure to watch, and I’m proud of him.”

Campbell said he plans to continue his Logan Can Company after graduation and see where it goes. Grandfather Bruce helped Campbell open a savings account. He plans to save half the money from his can business and half himself.

Board games are rising in popularity, and local shop owners say the games mean a lot to people

hen game shop owners throughout the metro area talk about the reasons they got into the business, they all use the same word: Community.

Games stores are more than just a center for play or a place to buy games. They serve as social hubs, something shop owners say is increasingly hard to find and ever more valued in today’s society.

While church attendance continues to plummet, politics becomes ever more divisive, and tech devices are a growing part of our daily lives, the human need for physical connection remains. Sitting across a table from others and playing games, while temporarily setting aside worries that today often range from personal to global, is one way to fill that void.

“It really fosters an alternative for people who are not interested in religion or some other types of traditional community. And ours is a lot more welcoming in ways, too,” said Shannon Mills, who co-owns Littleton’s Mythic Games with her husband Mike Agnew. “We know everybody here, and we’re all here for the same kinds of reasons.”

In fact, a recently opened Thornton game shop took its name from that philosophy.

“We were kicking around what to call it, and a friend said, ‘Call yourself what you’re trying to do. You’re trying to build a community, to do good,’” said Jessica Willman, co-owner of Thornton’s Do Gooder Games.

“Gaming is almost entirely about the community aspect,” said Jeff Kokx, co-owner of Enchanted Grounds, which has stores in both Highlands Ranch and Littleton. “I don’t think any game store owner is actually in it to make a mint. I think we do it because we enjoy it. We like the people that come in. We like community.”

Whatever the reason, board gaming is hot. In fact, the Washington Post recently described now as the golden age of board games, and there are no signs of its slowing. The global board games market is expected

to double in the next several years, growing from about $13 billion in 2023 to $26 billion by 2030.

Board games promote sportsmanship, family, teamwork and competitiveness, and studies show they increase self-confidence. For kids who today spend hours each day interacting with technology, playing board games gives them time away from the screen, directly interacting with others.

“I think the value of in-person communication and collaboration is very

important,” said Gabby Mann, who co-owns the Golden Game Guild with her husband Ryun Valdez.

“Hopefully that doesn’t get lost in this wild world we live in now. I’m glad we have opportunities for that here, especially for kids.”

“Our society is losing places to meet in person,” Valdez said. “There needs to be places besides just bars, especially for families, where people can go.”

Having a sense of community is also key to a successful game store’s business model.

“Building community is building value,” Do Gooder Games’ partner Dan William said. “Once you’ve built the community, then revenue follows.”

Mythic Games’ Agnew agrees.

With ever-growing competition from other game shops and online shopping, brick-and-mortar stores have to distinguish themselves.

“We never want to win customers on having the lowest prices,” he said.

“That generates a very cheap and temporary loyalty. They’re not loyal to you; they’re loyal to the price.

“There’s no competing with Amazon,” his wife Shannon said. “So we have to provide interest in different ways. We keep our space super clean, fun and open, and are always adding different events. It’s all about bringing people together.”

Pandemic and game innovation fuels growth

The game shop formula is a winning one, particularly in recent years — a fact business analysts attribute to increased innovation in board game creation and the rise of game shops.

The pandemic likely helped fuel that growth, as many people not only rediscovered board games while in lockdown but emerged from months of isolation craving social interaction and mental stimulation.

“In the end, I think COVID(-19) was good for business,” Shannon Mills said. “People were so starved for human interaction. You can only play so many video games before you want to see somebody face-to-face.”

board players were born between 1997 and 2012, and forecasts suggest they’ll continue to be the industry’s most significant consumers. But it’s kids who dominate the industry.

Players aged 5 to 12 are the global market’s biggest consumers.

To meet all that demand, the industry produces more than 3,000 new games each year. And for those who haven’t played in a while, they’ve come a long way from Battleship and Aggravation. On today’s board game menu, there is literally something for everyone.

“People will come in and say, ‘I don’t like games,’” said Mann, of Golden Game Guild. And we say, ‘You haven’t played the right game yet.’”

Consider games like Wingspan, a card-based game about birds. Using hand-painted cards, players control a piece of land, on which they’re tasked with populating a bird preserve. Many describe playing Wingspan as a soothing, Zen-like experience. It’s clearly struck a chord. Since its 2019 release, Wingspan has sold 1.7 million copies and won numerous awards.

Or Pandemic, a game in which plays are disease-fighting specialists battling the spread of several global plagues. Each player has a unique role, and must strategize, racing the clock with their fellow players to con-

quer the diseases. This highly rated, award-winning game is not simple, but players love it for both its complexity and emphasis on teamwork.

The tabletop role playing game Dungeons & Dragons, once a niche and secretive pastime played in basements and private rooms, is a feature act at almost any modern game shop. Almost all set aside one night for D&D, which often draws complete strangers together to craft their own fictional characters, worlds, and adventures. Created in the 1970s, the game is today at an all-time popularity peak.

Fans also flock to game shops to play “Magic: The Gathering,” the oldest known trading card game. It casts players as wizards who get their powers from a universe of cards that are bought, sold and traded.

And among the younger set, Pokémon trading cards remain a strong seller.

Boosting the industry, celebrities are onboard with D&D and other games.

“The stigma that once surrounded D&D has been removed,” Kokx said. “There are people who are very much in the limelight that play this D&D publicly — Vin Diesel, Jason Momoa, Joe Manganiello, Wil Wheaton … many have created podcasts and YouTube channels to promote the game.

“A lot of that is because our generation grew up with these games in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Now we’re older with disposable income, and introducing our kids to it. And it’s significantly more accepted.”

In an effort to accommodate the growing interest in in-person gaming and the vast library of available games, shops are growing. Enchanted Grounds opened a second location. Mythic recently expanded to a whopping 6,300 square feet, giving them more space for games but more pockets within the store in which groups can play specific games together.

And while many game shops cater specifically to the gaming community, offering sandwiches, snacks, soda, tea, and even limited alcohol sales, they’ve also broadened their focus to draw more customers.

Do Gooder Games and Enchanted Grounds specialize in high-end, local coffee, and Do Gooder Games sells sandwiches, even drawing employees from local businesses for lunch.

That’s not just good for the customer base, it’s almost vital for gamers.

“Some of these games take 4-6 hours to play,” said Do Gooder’s Jessica Willman. “Sitting down and playing a six-hour game without any food or breaks is hard.”

With its emphasis on quality coffee, Enchanted Grounds draws a broad range of customers. A Navy veterans group regularly meets there to talk and drink coffee. Women’s groups gather for mahjong and canasta. Remote workers in neighboring homes and apartments stop by to work for a few hours. All are part of the game shop community.

Do Gooder Games includes a room that can be used to record podcasts, space for community meetings and an employee who teaches newcomers to the business how to play games.

“Success to me will be defined by who successful the community is a the end of the day,” Dan Willman said. “We are thinking how to work with our community, and also how to help but also disrupt the industry.

To break down the barriers and the stereotypes of (game shop customers) being white and male-dominated, you need to cater to new people.”

And just maybe, those new customers will find a game they love.

“There’s a game for everybody, and it’s almost never Monopoly,” Mythic Games’ Shannon Mills said. “Gaming is like a walk-in closet; it’s way bigger than you thought it would be.”

It’s expensive to go to concerts in Colorado.

Let’s dig into why.

The first concert Jonathan Kahn ever attended at Red Rocks Amphitheatre was Loggins & Messina in July 1976. Nearly 50 years later, Kahn is parked in the lower south lot of the iconic outdoor venue, sitting in the doorway of his Sprinter van with a Snarf ’s sandwich, waiting for a storm to blow through before he heads inside to hear Hiatus Kaiyote and Masego.

Kahn said he had been to five Red Rocks shows this year, shaking his head slightly — that number used to be a lot higher.

Kahn isn’t the only one who has slimmed down his annual concert intake. Overall attendance at cultural institutions across the state is down, according to the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts.

In a survey of 285 cultural institutions, attendance between 2019 and 2022 decreased by 15% in metro Denver and 22% in Colorado outside of metro Denver.

Some of that dip is due to the fact that some people still don’t — and may never — feel comfortable attending events with large crowds after the pandemic. But more of that dip is attributed to the fact that entertainment is “a want not a need,” said Brian Kitts, Denver Arts and Venues spokesman. People adjust their spending according to what they feel they can afford. And when the cost of living is up in every other aspect of life, the amount that people are willing to spend on tickets to concerts, plays and museums goes down.

In 2018, the share of a person’s overall expenditures on arts and entertainment was 6.1% in metro Denver, significantly higher than the national average of 5.1%. In 2022, that percentage was 4.9%, lower than the national average of 5%. In dollars, this equates to roughly $500 per person per year less in spending.

Some experts anticipated a postCOVID price jump that artists and promoters would use to offset lost revenue from the pandemic.

That was true in 2021, when ticket prices increased about 15% at Red Rocks and nearly 45% at the Denver Coliseum. But this year the average price decreased from 2022’s averages, indicating a leveling-off of ticket prices.

Still, the increase in the average ticket price over the past five years is significantly higher than year-over-year inflation rates. For instance, the average price of a ticket to a Red Rocks concert has grown 31% since 2018, while inflation for metro Denver is about 24% over that same period.

The most dramatic change to ticket prices comes from the introduction of service fees. Prior to the 1980s, when Ticketmaster launched, venues paid the ticketing servicer. But Ticketmaster flipped that model, paying venues in exchange for being hired to handle ticketing and then passed the costs on to customers in the form of service fees.

Since these fees are somewhat arbitrary — hashed out in negotiations between the ticketing service, the concert promoter and the venue — service fees as a whole have generated a new rising cost for concert-goers independent of inflation or post-pandemic economics. The opaque charges add to the frustration of spectators upset that outside forces are gouging their entertainment budgets.

The project also adds turn lanes along the way, notably to the Valente Open Space. That was big plus for neighbor Marylee Appel.

“If you were coming from the west, you had to drive past it and make U-turn to get in,” she said. “With all the traffic, it doesn’t make sense to do anything else.”

The widening work is also expected to establish pedestrian and bicycle routes connecting Thornton, Brighton and Commerce City.

“We hope to be constructing full sidewalks through this area,” Schlitz said. “There is nothing there today. And many of the intersections there, they are no pedestrian ramps. So you’d have e a nice push button and a ramp.”

The Court, before it can terminate the parent-child legal relationship, must find that a continuation of the relationship is likely to result in grave risk of death or serious injury to the child or that your conduct or condition as a parent renders you unable or unwilling to give the child reasonable parental care.

YOU ARE FURTHER ADVISED that you have the right to have legal counsel represent you in all matters connected with the Motion to Terminate the Parent-Child Legal Relationship. If you cannot afford to pay the fees of legal counsel, you are advised that the Court will appoint legal counsel to represent you at no cost to you upon your request and upon your showing of an inability to pay.

YOU ARE FURTHER ADVISED that a grandparent, aunt, uncle, brother or sister of the child must file a request for guardianship and legal custody of the child within twenty days of the filing of the motion to terminate parent/ child legal relationship.
