Colorado is awash in white this spring, with statewide snowpack topping 140% of average this week, well above the reading a year ago, when it stood at just 97% of nor-
“Conditions in the American West are way better than they were last year at this time,” state climatologist Russ Schumacher said at a recent joint meeting of the Water Availability Task Force and the Governor’s Flood Task Force. “In Colorado we went from drought covering most of the state to most of the state being out of drought.”
Like other Western states, mountain snowpacks in Colorado are closely monitored because as they melt in the spring and summer, their runo delivers much of the state’s water.
Brighton Police Department arrested a juvenile female in connection to a homicide that occurred in the 400 block of North 6th Avenue.
O cers were dispatched just after midnight March 28 to check the well-being of a man who had not been heard from in several days. Responding o cers observed a person down inside the residence who was unresponsive, made entry and found
a man, later identi ed as 44-yearold Joseph Johnson of Brighton to be deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.
Upon further investigation, detectives identi ed the suspect as a 15-year-old female. Police arrested that suspect just after 1 p.m. that day in Castle Rock. She was transported to Brighton Police Department for processing and booked into Prairie Vista Youth Services Detention Center on charges of murder and
motor vehicle theft. e identity of the suspect will not be released at this time due to her age.
e case will be led with the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s O ce where the nal decision of formal charges will be determined. Under Colorado laws, the arrest and ling of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual committed a crime. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
A drought considered to be the worst in at least 1,200 years has devastated water supplies across the West. While no one is suggesting the dry spell is over, Colorado water o cials said 2023 will likely allow for a signi cant recovery in reservoirs and soil moisture.
e snow is deepest in the southwestern part of the state, where the San Juan/Dolores river basin is seeing a snowpack of 179% of average.
e Yampa Basin, in the northwest corner of Colorado, is also nearing historic highs, with snowpack registering 145% of average, according to the Natural Resources

“My goal for the store is to bring the community together between parents and children,” said owner Ti any Green.
e Pickled Pepper children’s clothing boutique opened its doors on March 30 at 14 North Main Street, o ering unique children’s clothes, accessories and furniture.
But Green said she’ll o er other things for children, such as tea parties and etiquette classes, Storytime and crafts, and ample space in the back of the store for additional activities.
“Our space in the back could be used for anything, I had a woman come in today that wants to host prenatal yoga care. So, she’ll come to a free class once a month and then talk about her doula services for anybody looking for a home birth or to have a doula delivery,” Green said.
Green said she is in a Bible study with 13 women, and when the ladies are going through something hard in their personal lives, ve others have experienced the same thing. ey talk about it and help each other through it.
“I want to take this experience and use the back room where parents
can come and talk parenting. We know parenting is hard, no matter what phase you are at, such as trying to conceive, and raising adult children,” Green said.
“Every phase comes with its challenges. You can share this information on social media, but it makes you feel alone and secluded. I want people to come together and feel like they’re not alone in each phase
of parenting,” she added.
“We can talk to people who have gone through it with the same level and could guide them. ey feel like they have a community and a safe place. It’s where lives change.”

“All these connecting pieces were coming together,” Green said. “I called the landlord immediately and told her I was interested; she said I was a woman-owned business. I love supporting women’s businesses. She loved our vision, and it has been a awless transition from day one.”
“We know so many business owners on Main Street it feels natural to be on Main. It feels right, and we know how important community is; we raise our children here, and our businesses are built here,” Green said.

Almost Home is celebrating 30 years of helping people experiencing homelessness and housing instability with its annual Spring Out of Homelessness Annual Fundraising Event.
e fundraiser is scheduled for April 28 at the Brighton Armory Performing Arts Center and is being presented with Platte Valley Medical Center.
“ is annual event gives us the opportunity to celebrate the success of our clients that have been able to ‘Spring Out’ of homelessness thanks to the generous investment of so many supporters and funders in our community,” said Rachel Monroe, Philanthropy & Communications Director for Almost Home.
It’s Almost Home’s most signicant fundraiser event, featuring this year a 90’s theme for attire and décor. Tickets are $75 and the price includes dinner, drinks, a silent auction and trivia games.
Dinner is being catered by David Bondarchuck, founder of Scratch Catering Services. Monroe said Bonarchuck experienced homelessness when he was a teen but overcame it and has become a successful business owner.
“He had the amazing opportunity to help decorate the White House during the holidays as well as an appearance on the Martha Stewart show,” said Monroe.
To purchase tickets, contact Rachel Monroe at Almost Home at 303-659-6199, or you can also order online at https://www.almosthomeonline.org/springoutofhomelessness

ere is considerably less white stu east of the Continental Divide in the Arkansas River Basin, where snowpack remains slightly below average and in the South Platte Basin, where snowpack is just above average.
e outlook for the seven-state Colorado River Basin has improved dramatically as well, with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, in its March 15 report, showing that Lake Powell is likely to see some 10.44 million acre-feet of new water supply by the end of September, or in ows at 109% average.
e Colorado River Basin includes seven states, with Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming comprising the Upper Basin and Arizona, California and Nevada making up the lower basin. And it is in the mountains of the Upper Basin, especially in Colorado, where most of the water for the entire system is generated.
at Colorado is seeing such spectacular snow levels this spring, bodes well for everyone. “ is is good news for the Colorado River Basin, no doubt about that,” Schumacher said.
Still the drought-strapped Colorado River system will see little storage recovery this year, according to Reclamation, which is forecasting that Lake Powell will see storage at just 32% of capacity by the end of the year. It had dropped to just 23% of capacity last year, prompting ongo-
ing emergency releases from Utah’s Flaming Gorge Reservoir to help keep the system from crashing.
Within Colorado, statewide reservoir storage this month stands at 80% of average, up slightly from this time last year when it registered 75% of average.
Reservoirs within Colorado are expected to see a signi cant boost in storage levels. Colorado’s largest reservoir, Blue Mesa, was just 36% full earlier this month, but is projected to receive enough new water this year that it will be 71% full by the end of the year, according to Reclamation.
Flood task force o cials said the deep snows, particularly in the southwestern and northwestern corners of the state, could cause ooding this spring and summer, especially if there is a series of hot, dry, windy days or major rain storms.
“We are blessed in large part because our snowpack tends to run o in a well-behaved manner,” said Kevin Houck, section chief of watershed and ood protection at the Colorado Water Conservation Board. “But I will say that I am watching things more closely this year. It’s not just the presence of snow that creates our problems. It needs to have a trigger as well. e classic trigger is the late spring warmup. And what can cause even more damage is when we get rain on snow as well.”

After the cold and wet winter we’ve been experiencing in Denver, I know everyone is looking forward to spring. As the days grow longer and warmer, we all start looking for the telltale signs that spring is arriving — birds chirping, trees lea ng out, lilac buds, bulbs emerging out of the damp soil. As you observe nature around you, why not start taking pictures, recording your observations and contributing to large projects as a community scientist? April is the perfect month to join community science e orts across the globe.
At the Denver Botanic Gardens, we seek to connect people with plants. Our scientists are particularly interested in studying patterns and processes of biodiversity. One way we do this is through community science (also known as citizen science) initiatives such as the Denver EcoFlora project. ese initiatives allow participants to connect with plants by making observations of biodiversity patterns in their environment. EcoFlora is based on the traditional ora concept, a list or inventory of plants in a given area or period of
time. e eco in EcoFlora represents going beyond a traditional ora and encompassing the study of urban ecosystems. We run the Denver EcoFlora project on the iNaturalist platform where we engage the community in documenting plants living in the Denver metro area. Our goal is to document all plants living in the seven county metro area (Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broom eld, Denver, Douglas and Je erson counties) using the iNaturalist app. Why? You may ask. Well, understanding the ora of an area is the best way to protect it.
As part of the EcoFlora project, we send out monthly challenges called EcoQuests to engage participants in documenting a speci c species, group of plants or theme.
April’s EcoQuest has two parts: the rst is focused on some of the rst owers to emerge in spring, the pasque owers (Pulsatilla nutalliana). en, starting April 28, a global competition begins with the start of the City Nature Challenge - a challenge to document the most biodiversity within cities. Using the iNaturalist app, you can make observations of any wild organism: plant,
bird, insect, fungi. Observations made between April 28 and May 1 count towards the competition. Last year, we had nearly 400 participants observe more than 600 species. Our goal is to surpass those numbers this year. And, if the wet winter unfolds into a sunny spring, we just might be able to do it. Many local partners are organizing hikes or bioblitzes during the City Nature Challenge. Check our website (botanicgardens.org/ science-research/citizen-scienceprograms/city-nature-challenge) for details on events and how to register.
You can contribute to scienti c studies by downloading the iNaturalist app and using it to take photos of the nature around you. We encourage you to get outside, feel the sun on your face and contribute to science while you’re out there.

The weeks seemed to be piling up, one right on top of the next. With the time ying by so fast, it also seemed as if the to-do list grew longer while the things checked o kept getting shorter or couldn’t keep up with everything that needed to be done and the additional things being added to the list. As they woke up to start another day, she asked her husband, “Why does everything have to be so di cult right now?”
She moved across the country with her 4-year-old son to start a new life and to reconnect with family. Her son was having a hard time adjusting to the new time zone, new surroundings, and new family members he had to get to know. His lack of sleep meant that she wasn’t getting any consistent sleep either, and the vicious cycle of no sleep and stress began. Additionally, she started a brand-new job, and he started school for the rst time, causing even greater disruption and stress. he knew how large and complex deals could take longer than others. He had started the process on a new opportunity many months ago. As with any sales role, pressure comes when deals slip or push month-to-month and quarter-to-quarter. He was doing everything by the book, awlessly following the process and aligning with the buyer’s journey, yet the deal kept slipping. Finally, almost at the nish line to win the business, a week of discussion with the customer’s legal team forced more delays. He asked some of the people on his team, “Why does everything have to be so di cult right now?”
We all know stories like these, don’t we? We have all felt like this at times, haven’t we? I could add several more just like the ones above, but instead, let’s focus on what happens next.

it is because we associate it with Easter as we celebrate the Risen Christ. For some, it’s just about springtime and the budding of trees, grass turning green again, more sunlight pouring through our window, owers beginning to bloom, and the start of baseball that gives us a new and positive attitude.

So I say to the couple, the mom and her son, and the professional salesperson all mentioned above, as well as any of us who may be saying the same thing right now, “Let today be a day of new beginnings.” If what we are doing right now isn’t working, let’s start over and develop a new plan that aligns with who we want to be, where we want to go and grow, and what we want to enjoy in this life. Riverdale Ridge’s Ty Thompson has to come o the bag to retrieve the pick-o attempt during his team’s game against Horizon March 29, while Horizon base runner is Austin Petersen grabs base. RRHS built an 11-3 lead, then pushed over a seventh-inning run for a 12-11 win on the Ravens’ field. Davis Wilkins had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Nick Lay had two hits and two RBIs. Austin Williams led the Ravens with two hits and three RBIs. Cayden Trujillo scored four runs and drove in one. Hunter Hendrixson had two RBIs.
Nothing but smiles for the Erie Tigers as they managed to score their second goal of the match before halftime. The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 in a league match played in Brighton March 30.
Given the winds that raked Brighton March 31, it was a good thing that crews removed a number of trees from an area near Eagle Ridge Academy’s new on-site soccer eld.
Representatives from the school, the city of Brighton and the school district sat outside ERA for what was a very short update on the progress of the stadium. It’s just outside the former main entrance to the school and became possible as a result of a recent voter-approved mill levy.
“ is is a huge milestone for us,” said ERA head of school Scott Richardson. “It’s a big improvement. It’s a monumental occasion for us.” e Warriors have not been able to host a home soccer match for 12 seasons. at will change ursday, April 27, according to school o cials. Richardson took time to outline some of the advantages and future changes because of the stadium.
“It will put a lot of our fears at ease about who is coming into the school,” he said. “It will provide better vision for the people who are coming onto campus. We’re going to move the existing o ce (to the west side of the building). We’ll put four classrooms where the front desk was. We’re going to improve the capacity of our cafetorium, and we’re going to be able to make some improvements to our drama program.”
Two new conference rooms are part of the upgrades, as is a new public-address system.
Richardson said grass was to have been installed on the playing surface early this week.
An tiques might seem like a eld that’s struggling to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, but the local scene in Elizabeth — and elsewhere in Colorado — suggests a renaissance of sorts might be occurring in the industry.
Randy Wallace owns Randy’s Antiques and Art on Main Street in Elizabeth. e bustling scene in town — featuring e Prickly Pear Antiques, e Carriage Shoppes and 1897 House of Antiques, among others — breeds community, not competition, he said.
“ e more stores in town, the better,” Wallace said. “People love to come antique shopping when there are multiple stores. Each one of our shops has a di erent niche, each one has just a little bit di erent style; I think customers enjoy having a di erent variety when they come to Elizabeth.”
Wallace said that while his shop specializes in antique art and furniture, others cater to di erent interests, like the Prickly Pear’s tearoom.
Over in Littleton, Owner Joe Crawford of Old Crow Antiques had the novel idea to add a root beer bar to his shop, with the eventual goal of making the soda section — which currently carries between 60-90 varieties of vintage soda pop at any given time — the largest root beer bar in the world.
Crawford said Old Crow — which he opened three years ago with his brother — is one of the “new kids on the block” in the local
antiquing scene, but said they’ve been welcomed into the scene with open arms.
“I feel like we’re part of a larger community in the metro area,” Wallace said. “ ere are stores throughout the area, and we’ve gotten to know the people who own and work there — some have been here a long time.”
Nostalgia and good, old-fashioned, quality craftsmanship
Antique shops can often sprawl thousands of square feet — Old Crow’s showroom is over 45,000 square feet — packed with items from all eras and purposes. Shopkeepers say that a sense of longing for a di erent time helps people nd what they’re looking for out of the scores of inventories, in addition to the fact that many antiques have stood the test of time for a reason.
“In antique furniture, it’s already lasted 100 years, and — if you take care of it — it’ll last another 100 years,” Wallace said. “A lot of today’s stu is kind of throwaway.”
Julie McCoy, who runs own Unique Treasures Antiques and Collectibles in Wheat Ridge with her parents, echoed Wallace’s sentiment.
“(Antiques are) made so much better,” McCoy said. “ ey’re around 100 years later for a reason. It’s not like Ikea stu that you put together and throw away. It’s good quality
stu that’s built to last. It builds a lot of memories with people.”
People also point to childhood nostalgia or family memories as reasons for antique shops’ sustained popularity.
“(People seek out) childhood memories,” McCoy said. “Stu that’ll last, people come in and say, ‘My mom had this,’ they need to have that again to relive their childhood.”
Crawford said his family got into the antiques business because of a love for history and historic items cultivated from time spent with grandparents as kids.
“We tell people it’s a walk down memory lane,” Crawford said. “You’ll see something that reminds you of another time, maybe a simpler time, or childhood. Something you haven’t thought of in maybe 50, 60 years.
“I’ll be reminded of my grandma, my family and that’s what it is for me, the stories and experiences of everything that’s here,” Crawford continued. “We say, ‘ ere are a lot of ghosts under this roof.’”
