27J Board discusses charter

By Evelyn Wiant for The Banner Charter renewal for Eagle Ridge Academy was the primary topic of discussion Tuesday during the study session of the District 27J Board of Education.

The 27J board will vote to renew or reject the charter at its regular meeting on Jan. 28. If the charter is renewed, Eagle Ridge and District 27J will enter into a 90-day negotiation of ERA’s contract. After a contract has been completed, the document will be presented to the 27J board for a final approval in April.

The Board of Education must approve ERA’s charter for renewal every three years.

This topic was put before the board one year ago, but at the time, ERA was fresh from a setback involving a misappropriation of state funding in the school. The 27J board felt that Eagle Ridge had not had sufficient time to recover from the issue, and granted a oneyear contract extension until the school could resolve the matter. A 19-point checklist of terms was drawn up for Eagle Ridge to meet in the time before the charter renewal would be revisited.

“Assuming that all of those conditions were met, this is now an expedited process so that the application would not have to be started completely over,” said Janet Wyatt, chief legal officer for 27J. The board will review the application document, as well as reports from ERA and 27J on the progress of the school in meeting that checklist. Items included filling all of the

Council learns of risks tied to governing

Her presentation was designed to help councilors understand their roles as council members, the conduct expected of them, standards to maintain, courteous behavior, and legal

issues. She explained how behavior of governments and those who govern can be factors in public liability. She pointed out that proper process in governmental actions can sometimes be as important or more important than the decisions they make.

Hotline reaches milestone in aid

The Colorado Foreclosure Hotline reached a milestone that its founders never would have imagined possible.

The numbers have been released for the seventh year of a program that was expected to last only two years.

The milestone: The Hotline network has met with more than 50,000 homeowners facing foreclosure. When the Hotline began taking calls in October 2006, the worst-case scenario estimate was 1,500 calls a month for a two-year period.

Call volume peaked at 4,500-plus calls in February 2009. In fact, 2013 was the first year the Hotline monthly call volume was consistently less than the original worstcase estimate.

First seven years by the numbers • Calls received by the network of agencies through September 2013: 172,541 • People counseled through September: 50,695 The Hotline is a network of more than 20 HUD-approved housing-counseling agencies across the state.

Throughout the seven years, the success rate has been steady. Four of five homeowners who received counseling were able to avoid foreclosure.

Of the homeowners who avoided foreclosure, 84 percent saved or retained their home, and 16 percent were able to “liquidate” their home through a traditional sale, pre-foreclosure short sale or “deed-in-lieu” when the bank accepts the deed to nullify the mortgage loan.

In November, Division of Housing Economist Ryan McMaken noted that foreclosures had dropped to 2004 levels.

Today there are 8,865 current, active foreclosures in Colorado, according to RENAV Web site updated in

January. Each of those foreclosures is at some point along the seven- to eight-month timeline for a Colorado foreclosure.

The foreclosure process begins with the posting of the Notice of Election Demand on a homeowner’s door. In December, 845 notices were posted; that means 845 homeowners/ families newly at risk of losing their home.

“We are seeing fewer homeowners calling the Hotline who are current on their mortgages,” said Hotline Director Shannon Peer. “The trend is that callers are further behind in their mortgage payments. We want to continue to help those who still struggle to make their payments.

“We are gratified to see we’ve made our way through the foreclosure crisis.” Peer said. “Now we also want to help anchor a stable market with fewer foreclosures.”

In the seven years the Hotline has existed, “we as housing counselors and the Attorney General’s office have received much better cooperation from the servicers (banks).

“The single largest referral source that prompts homeowners to call the Hotline continues to be the 90-day foreclosure deferment notice that is posted on the homeowner’s door,” he said.

In addition to the Foreclosure Hotline, Brothers Redevelopment assists Denver area communities with home repairs and painting projects, such as Help for Homes in Brighton.

Energy and passion ran freely at the Armory Monday night.

Relay for Life General Chairman Michele Lussier and fellow Relay participants gathered in the Armory’s auditorium for the 2014 Relay for Life kickoff rally.

The evening began with the national anthem sung by local high school students.

Then Lussier spoke on the topic, “What is Relay for Life?”

“Relay for Life is a passion, an overwhelming feeling of community, a feeling of achievement and accomplishment,” Lussier said. Her mother is a cancer survivor and is the catalyst that brought Lussier and her family to Relay for Life.

For her family, volunteer-

ing is a family affair.

She announced the names of the new committee members and the new location for the relay.

This year Relay chose Brighton’s newest community park, Charmichael Park, at 650 Southern St. The committee wanted a more intimate location where the volunteers could set up their tents closer together. Relay committee members also want to walk laps in a more visible area.

They were pleased with the new location.

Lussier went on to announce the 2014 Relay theme, “One wish, two wish, you wish, I wish for a cure.”

The committee’s hope is that a Dr. Seuss theme will inspire people. The fundraising goal this year is to raise $100,000.

For those who would like to join a team and become a

volunteer, rally meetings will be held at Platte Valley Medical Center at 6 p.m. on Feb. 10, March 10, April 14, May 12, and June 16.

Relay for Life sponsors a Luminarias Night in April to honor both the survivors and memory of cancer victims.

Each luminaire costs $10 and can be purchased at a team meeting.

Relay raises money for research, and most of the money it raises stays in Colorado. It benefits those who need it – the survivors.

Before the evening ended Lussier thanked the volunteers, and the many businesses around Brighton that offer their services.

Cities face-to-face across cyberspace

For the second time in less than two weeks, Brighton Sister Cities members had a face-to-face chat with friends in Ziebice, Poland.

On Saturday it was a little more formal than on New Year’s Eve, when the Skype link beamed a Polish New Year’s Eve party into the home of Henry Ross in Brighton, where about a dozen Brightonians sang songs to their Polish counterparts in the Ziebice stadium/ballrom.

Saturday, Brighton Mayor Dick McLean and Sister Cities Chairman (and Councilman) Ken Kreutzer spoke directly to Ziebice Mayor Antoni Herbowski, who sat at a table with three others tied to the 20th anniversary celebrations that will take place this May in Ziebece and next year in Brighton.

The occasion on Saturday was the photography show on display at the Armory, 300 Strong St., through Feb. 17.

Among those on the big screen projected on the Armory Stage was the photographer, Stanislaw Papardowski, whose Armory show is his 10th international exhibit.

His photos are for sale – some by silent auction at the Armory, others to be auctioned during Brighton’s annual Sister Cities fundraising dinner, Feb. 15 at the Brighton Recreation Center.

All funds will be used to pay for scholarships to help more Brighton students visit Poland.

The New Year’s Eve party in Ziebice also was a fundraiser – for the Janine Association, named for thelate Janine Slowinski, a Brighton Sister Cities member who died in 2012 and whose husband, Neil Fleishauer, is also a strong supporter of the Sister Cities program.

Fleischauer was among the nearly 40 people at the Armory reception. In addi-

tion, Brighton City Council members Cynthia Martinez, Kirby Wallin and Mark Humbert attended the reception. State Sen. Mary Hodge and her husband, former Brighton councilor and Mayor Pro-tem Dick Hodge, and former Council Member Daryl Meyers, also longtime Sister Cities supporters and members, were introduced to the Polish delegation, who stayed up past midnight in Poland to participate in the Skype telecast.

Herbowski asked about the picture quality being received in Brighton before boasting that the “TV guys” in Poland were apparently much better than those in the U.S., where the images from the Armory seemed smaller and blurrier.

He did however, prove to be a good politician, when Kreutzer asked whether the cameras made “taller and thinner ....” Herbowski annnounced across cyberspace that Kreutzer, “looked great.”

They said it was in the best interest of the commission to eliminate the two-term (eightyear) term limit in order to meet state of Colorado requirements for a minimum of three designated professional members (of the seven total regular members). They mentioned how difficult it is to get professionals on the board because of the limited number of qualifIed people in a small city such as Brighton.

Public Information Manager Kristen Chernowski announcced that her office is planning to produce a regular electronic update of Brighton goings-on and distributed a quarterly postcard that recently was sent to Brighton homes and contains information on upcoming Armory events.. Among upcoming events is Mayor McLean's annual State of the City address, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Jan. 23 at the Armory.

Other items discussed were

the choosing of delegates to attend the 20th anniversary celebration of the BrightonZiebice, Poland, Sister Cities connection, to be held in Ziebice in May and early June.

Three members of council and the City Manager Manuel Esquibel are expected to attend the event. Mayor Protem Kirby Wallin was one council member who expressed an interest in going. It is one of three major trips for council members supported by the city of Brighton. The other two are the National League of Cities confererences in the spring and fall.

The mayor also brought to the council's attention that local Eagle Schout Dylan Gagon has completed two horseshoe pits in Montoya Park, and looking forward to a riibbon cutting, probably in April in the park at Ninth Avenue and Brighton Street.

“We don’t have any idea what we’d do with these kids if they weren’t attending charter schools, because of the overcrowding we are experiencing,” said

Superintendent Chris Fiedler.

“We are very grateful to have (the schools) in our district.”

The Jan. 28 board meeting will be in the District Training Room, 80 S. Eighth Ave., at 7 p.m. All school board meetings are open to the public, and district parents and community members are encouraged to attend.

She explained recent changes in some council procedures, such as use of electronic devices like tablets and iPads and differences in voting procedures because of those. She also stressed professionalism in all emails sent and received by council members.

Historic Preservation Commission Chairman Joseph Burt and Community Development Director Holly Prather proposed that term limits be lifted for professional members of the commission. The topic is expected to be discussed in the regular City Council meeting on Tuesday.

Volunteer Naturalists wanted by RMBO Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory seeks individuals in the Denver metro area for its Volunteer Naturalist program.

Volunteers are needed to help RMBO educators teach citizens of all ages the importance of bird and habitat conservation through interactive classroom programs, field trips and outreach events. No experience in the fields of environmental education or ornithology is necessary.

Training will be held for new Volunteer Naturalists on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 27 to March 20 at RMBO’s Old Stone House Environmental Learning Center, at Barr Lake State Park in Brighton. Volunteers receive about 40 hours of classroom and in-the-field

training on topics including basic ecology, ornithology, teaching techniques and public speaking.

School Programs Coordinator Emily Snode said that being a Volunteer Naturalist is a great way to learn about our natural world and gain valuable and rewarding experience in environmental education.

Volunteers must be able to pass a background check; have transportation to and from education sites around the Denver area, especially Brighton; and attend the weekday training sessions starting Feb. 27.

Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory seeks volunteers for its Bald Eagle Watch citizen-science program. RSVPs are due today.

Volunteers would collect data on Bald Eagle nesting behavior from February to July at nests along the Front Range of Colorado, from the Denver area north to Fort Collins.

A training session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at RMBO’s Environmental Learning Center, 14500 Lark Bunting Lane, Brighton, at the north entrance to Barr Lake State Park.

No previous experience is necessary to take part in Bald Eagle Watch. Volunteers must be able to monitor their designated nest(s) weekly for a minimum of one hour; fill out a data sheet and enter data

into an online reporting system; drive to the nest site(s); and own a pair of binoculars or spotting scope.

Fine Arts at Four concert on Feb. 23 Fine Arts at Four and Adams County SCFD are proud to present the Colorado Chamber Players in concert at 4 p.m. on Feb. 23, at First Presbyterian Church, 510 S. 27th Ave. The Chamber Players will be joined by guest artists Catherine Beeson and Thomas Heinrich in an afternoon concert.

A viola quintet of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a short string sextet will precede the highlight of the concert: the great Schubert C major cello quintet.

Schubert’s final work for chamber ensemble was composed just two months before his death, in 1828. A work of transcendental beauty, the cello quintet is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the chamber music literature.

Dickinson receives national honor

The American Artists Professional League has announced Judith Dickinson as the 2013 recipient of the Ridgewood Art Institute Award in the AAPL 85th Grand National Online Exhibition.

The award was presented

by AAPL President Peter Rossi on Dec. 7 during the AAPL annual meeting and awards reception held at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City.

Her work was selected from 160 oil paintings in the competition.

“The AAPL is dedicated to encouraging and promoting traditional, realistic art,” Rossi said. “We are delighted to recognize some of America’s finest artists and our award winners’ work epitomizes the quality of art that our organization strives to support.”

The nonprofit AAPL has been devoted to the cause of fine arts in America since 1928.

Students learn to run own town

Bankers, builders, doctors and delivery people: Turnberry Elementary School’s 120 fifth-grade students returned from their holiday break last week to the task of running their own community.

The students took part in the Young AmeriTowne program Jan. 7. The program, sponsored by the nonprofit Young Americans Center for Financial Education, allows students to take part in a lifelike simulation where they operated their own 17-business town. Young AmeriTowne, which includes a detailed classroom curriculum leading up to the field trip, introduces concepts to students such as supply and demand, job skills and work habits, banking procedures, democratic processes, civic consciousness and career awareness. included managing a bank, operating a grocery store and medical center and producing their own television show and newspaper. Students also were selected to represent their community as mayor, judge and police officers.

9 paraprofessionals study teaching Nine School District 27J paraprofessionals are now working toward careers in teaching after being accepted into the Aims Community College Career Ladder Program.

The collaboration between Aims Community College

and the University of Colorado BUENO Center, provides educational opportunities for paraprofessionals, tutors, school staff and other individuals interested in becoming elementary bilingual/English-as-a-Second Language teachers.

Successful applicants receive a two-year scholarship that covers tuition, fees and books as they pursue an associate of arts degree with an emphasis in elementary/ ESL education. Once they have received their associate’s degree, program participants can transfer to Metropolitan State University of Denver or

the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley to earn an elementary teaching license with endorsements in bilingual or ESL. Jackson wrestles between football seasons

By Michelle Boyer for The Banner When not playing football, Brighton High School senior Sam Jackson is all about wrestling. The 285-pounder is the Bulldogs’ heavyweight this year, and has a current record of 13-4.

“I wrestle to keep out of trouble and to help make sure my grades are good,” he said.

“It also helps me with football during my offseason.”

Jackson started wrestling his freshman year. His junior year was his first solid year wrestling varsity. He was a state qualifier last year, where he lost both matches; and he

was the East Metro Athletic Conference Champion last season. He’s also made first team all-conference during his junior year.

“I’ve always been around wrestling because my older brother, Joe, did it as a kid,” he said. “I didn’t know if I would like it, but Coach (Tom) Wagner said it would help with football and I agreed to do it.”

He said his passion is football. He’s played football since he was 6. He plays offensive and defensive line.

it. My dad, two brothers and my mom were always there pushing me to the limits to play as hard as I could. I love the intensity of the game, and how there’s no limit of how mean you can be out on the field.”

Jackson said his favorite wrestling move is the “power half” because it gets him the pins.

“This season we’ve a lot of freshmen, and they get the job done for sure,” he said.

“We’re doing really well as a

team this year and will only improve as the season goes on.”

After graduation Jackson will attend Western State Colorado University to study criminal justice and play football.

Obituaries/funeral notices Karen K. Pinzenscham

Karen K. Pinzenscham, 49, of Strasburg, died Jan. 9 at her home. She was born in Denver to Margaret (McGill) and Fred Pinzenscham Jr. She graduated from Strasburg High School in 1983 and continued her education at Arapahoe Community College.

She was an administrator for United Airlines for the past nine years. Previously she worked for both Adams County and Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Offices.

Karen was a loving, caring person who was always on the go and always cooking.

She loved to travel and spend time with her family, especially her grandson, Gregory.

Survivors include her mother, Margaret “Peggy”

Pinzenscham, of Bennett; children Kimberlee Wilson of Strasburg and Elisha Wilson of Colorado Springs; sisters Linda (Dan) Goldsberry of South Fork, and Sherrie (Troy) Johnson of Stratton, Neb.; brother Fred (Cindy) Pinzenscham III, and grandson Gregory Fisher of Strasburg.

She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Pinzenscham Jr., in 1995.

Obituaries/funeral notices Robert Leslie Huett

Robert Leslie Huett, 74, of Brighton died Jan. 11 at his home. He was born in Denver to Fred and Vera (Rutherford) Huett. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1957 and married Janet Brethauer on Aug. 16, 1959, in Brighton.

Survivors include his wife, Janet; children Sheryl, Don and David Huett; sister Diana (Clay) Hoffman; and grandchildren Dionna and Weston Huett. Robert retired from Manna Pro in June 2001 as a truck dispatcher. He loved to travel and was an avid bowler at Lucky Lanes.

Eva J. Jachetta

Eva J. Jachetta, 44, of Brighton died Jan. 10. She was born in New York City to Jire Bartik and Marcella Svobodnikova. She attended Douglas County Schools for a short time but graduated from Ranum High School and later married Deon Jachetta.

She owned and operated Teleco Business Communications in Brighton.

Eva was a loving and giving, wife, mother, sister and daughter; always giving and nurturing. She loved life and was loved by all and she will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Deon, of Brighton; mother Marcella (George) Herman of Aurora; daughters Kaylee and Jessica Jachetta of Brighton; brothers Roman (Julie) Bartik of Denver and Tom Herman of San Francisco. William Dreiling

William “Billy” Dreiling, 53, of Brighton died Jan. 9. He was born in Denver to Anthony and Agnes (Quint) Dreiling. Bill attended schools in Brighton. He was a native of Brighton and spent his entire life in the Brighton area.

Bill enjoyed working and worked for B&D Oil Field Maintenance as a welder for 12 years.

He loved playing softball and loved to golf and go fishing and camping. He loved competition. No matter what he was doing, Bill turned it into a competition. He also was a devout Broncos and Rockies fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

of Fort Worth, Texas, Joshua Dreiling of Brighton and Laura Dreiling of Aztec, N.M.; sister Geraldine (Clem) Dechant of Apache Junction, Ariz.; brother Randy Dreiling of Brighton; five grandchildren Melina, Dominic, Tyler, Ethan and Kaley.

Hazel L. Chambers

Hazel L. Chambers, 91, of Brighton died Jan. 9. She was born in Haigler, Neb., to Emil and Alta (Wheaton) Zuege.

She graduated from Haigler High School in 1940 and received her business degree from Denver Central Business College in 1943.

Hazel lived in Brighton for the past 60 years. She was a member of the Brighton United Methodist Church.

She loved camping, crocheting, knitting and having family gatherings. Hazel loved spending time with her family, attending drag races, high school games and events and even helping to operate the family auction business.

Survivors include her children Diane (Larry) Sack of Hudson, Dick (Pam) Chambers of Brighton, Dean (Kathy) Chambers of Brighton and Debbie (Greg) Beacom of Westminster; sister Dorothy Walker of Brighton; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, in 1992; son Don in 1980; grandson Chad, in 1976; brother Stan in 2010; other extended family members, Jerry Thompson and Helen Pfeifer.

Lucile Knaus

Lucile Knaus could make any plant grow and thrive, whether in her home or outside in her garden. But she will be best remembered for her nurturing ways with family, friends and students,

including many third-graders in her more than 20 years of classroom teaching, mostly at Henderson Elementary. Lucile Rudolph Knaus, 96, of Brighton died Dec. 21. She will be missed, especially her wit and smile. Lucile was the first of seven children of C. Gordon and Fannie Rudolph, who farmed and raised livestock east of Fort Collins.

Lucile rode a pony to Boxelder School. She went on to graduate from Fort Collins High and Colorado A&M (now CSU), majoring in sociology and economics and earning teacher certification.

While in college she was business manager for the school annual, president of SPURS, an officer in Gamma Phi Beta social sorority and on many women’s sports teams.

In 1939, Lucile married Kenneth D. Knaus of Longmont, also a Colorado A&M graduate. They first lived in Crook, where Kenny was a field man for the Great Western Sugar Co., and Lucile taught high school. Their daughter and son were born when they lived there. In 1947, Kenny was transferred to Longmont and in 1951 to Brighton. Lucile and Kenny built a home on South Ninth where Lucile lived for nearly 60 years. Kenny died in 1978.

Lucile made numerous contributions to her community through the years: Cub Scout Den Mother, Camp Fire Girls' leader, Sunday School teacher, and, after retirement – pen pal for more than 20 years in the Senior Center's program with fifth-graders, one-on-one teacher of reading two days a week for more than 13 years for inmates at the Adams County Detention facility in Brighton, and volunteer for the hospital and Meals on Wheels.

Lucile was a member of PEO Chapter BN and of an ecumenical Bible study group. She saved Fridays for walks with dear friends.

Lucile was an accomplished seamstress and quilter, not too proud to darn socks and turn collars for family members well into her 90s. Her large kitchen was another favorite spot. She baked thousands of cookies for grandchildren and her church’s preschool and teens on road trips, earning her the names Cookie Lady and Gran’ma

Cookie.

Lucile was predeceased by her sister Ruth and brothers Bill (Johnalou) and Gordon (Sally) Rudolph. Lucile is survived by sister Mary Ann Ragland of Austin; brothers Robert (Dorothy) and Larry (Marietta) Rudolph of Fort Collins; children Dr. Kendal (Susan) Knaus of Alamosa, and the Rev. Canon Karen Fast of Victoria, B.C., Canada; four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Lucile's family extends a heartfelt thank you to her many caregivers in the last few months.

A service of thanksgiving and celebration for her life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 510 S. 27th Ave., 11 a.m., Saturday, reception following in the Fellowship Hall. Nancy J. Pullins

Nancy J. Pullins, 84, of Brighton died Dec. 23. She was born to Lyndon and Margaret Pullins. She was married to William Schutte who preceded her in death.

Survivors include her children Chuck Schutte of Newport Beach, Calif., Marge Riley of Brighton, Rita Schutte of Sterling, and John Schutte of Aurora; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at Fort Logan National Cemetery Jan. 10. Tabor-Rice Funeral Home handled the services.

Sandra Gail Moore

Sandra (Sandy) Gail Moore, 72, of Loveland, died Jan. 6. She was born in Moorhead, Minn., to Darwin and Dorothy (Johnk) Moore.

She lived in Glydon, Minn., until they moved to Colorado in 1955 and later graduated from Englewood High School.

Sandy was the office manager at Sennett Realty for 30 years. She liked crafts and canning in her younger years.

She enjoyed playing the piano and strumming the banjo, and painting and reading. She always had a good book going. Sandy loved the Broncos. She was a lot of fun and had a great sense of humor. Sandy was small but feisty. When her children were growing up, all their friends called her “mom” and her home was the neighborhood house. She loved people and life – she loved her family and the get togethers.

Survivors include her children Danny (Mary Ann) Moore and Shelli Moore both of Loveland; brothers Pat (Gracie) Moore of Englewood and Terry Moore of Brighton; sister Tammi (Eric) Franson of Fort Worth, Texas; two stepgrandchildren and two great step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her exhusband and one step-grandchild.

Bulldogs girls outlast PV in long run

By Michelle Boyer for The Banner Basketball was a game of scoring runs Friday night during the girls’ rival basketball game at Prairie View.

Brighton High School dominated in the end, with a 48-42 win.

Brighton Coach Dan Doehler pointed to Prairie View’s strong 29-9 run in the third quarter.

“They got their fans into it, and we picked up our defense going back to our three-two defense zone,” he said. “It helped keep them away from the perimeter and that helped.

“Brielle (Brady) had to have the ball and make free throws, and that really sealed the deal. Sidney Potestio really grew up tonight, too.

As a sophomore, she came in for Cassie (Kaiser) and that was huge.”

Doehler said his kids are playing well.

“We want to play good teams and be tested, because

we have tough teams coming up in our schedule,” he said.

“We have amnesia, and are going to forget about it and move on to the next game.”

According to Maxpreps.com, Brady was named player of the game for Friday’s effort.

She scored 14 points, with one assist and grabbed five rebounds. She’s Brighton’s leading scorer this season with 16 points a game.

“I think what helped us was the crowd tonight,” Brady said. “We knew coming into this game, it was going to be like this,” she said. “We knew we had to work together and that’s what pulled it together for us.

“I think winning against Montbello (Thursday) night gave us more momentum coming into this game. This was our rival game and we had to push through it.”

Brady said with the long stretch of three games in three days last weekend, the team survives.

“We live to play basket-

school, she’s undecided. She said if she decides to play college ball, she probably would prefer to play for a Division II school.

Looking ahead, Brady said the Bulldogs want to win the league and advance further in state than last season.

“This is our time to get to the next level,” she said. “We

want it bad.”

Prairie View Coach Rachel Parker said her team is young this season as compared to Brighton’s squad, which is stacked heavy with seniors.

“We were down 15, and came back after half to tie it up,” she said. “They showed a lot of fight, but ran out of gas. This wasn’t our league game, and we can make an adjustment and be ready for them next time on Feb. 7.”

Parker said there’s no real standout this year, but her team is all standing up.

“We’re really focusing on that team win, and each week they get better and stronger,” she said. “We just take it one game at a time.”

Before next month’s rematch, Parker said the team will work on containing Brighton’s post players, who are strong and who dominate.

“We have to shut them down and take away the points,” she said. “Our post player (Alex Anderson) is young, and learning.”

“My personal goals for this season have yet to be achieved,” he said. “Because we’re still in the midst of the season, but I just achieved one last night by defeating Brighton.”

During his basketball career at PVHS, Schwindaman has made first team all-conference, was awarded East Metro Athletic Conference team most valuable player, Prairie View team captain, Joint Effort Player to Watch 2013, Rocky Mountain Fall Showcase top juniors 2013, top sophomores 2012 and top freshmen 2011.

Brighton Coach Eli Haskell said the loss was a disappointment.

“We felt good going into this game,” he said. “We’ve been improving, but they played a better game than us.”

Haskell said the main problem is the team doesn’t handle pressure well, and Prairie View did a great job pressuring his players.

“We didn’t respond great, but we saw some improvement,” he said. “The credit goes to (Prairie View), and they had a great game plan.

It’s a testament of good coaches and great players to be able to do that.”

Both teams have a rematch game at Brighton High School on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.

“It’s always nice to get another shot to show you’ve improved,” Haskell said. “It’s a lot of fun for everyone involved and it’s a great atmosphere. We get to have

another fun night and that sort of atmosphere that you can’t have in practice or even prepare for. That’s what boosts the enthusiasm of the players.

“In the end we want to be able to handle pressure better.

We measure success by how we handle it. I can’t wait to see how much better we do when we play them again.”

Haskell said it’s been a long first part of the season with hit after hit on the road having a 14-game stretch away from home. The team’s overall season includes 14 away games out of 23.

“We want to keep getting better handling pressure,” he said. “Of our last nine games; seven are at home. Going into the rematch, we’ll be building momentum, and not just because it’s at home.”

Michael Willis played well, scoring 19 points.

“Adam Tabor had his best game of the season he was consistent and timely in keeping Brighton alive,” Haskell said. “Josh Sandoval played an outstanding game with 10 rebounds and 7 points, which were season highs for him.

Nate Morales played his heart out and gave everything he had. He defensively guarded Prairie View’s best player.”

“Our kids didn’t stop playing, and we didn’t give up,” Haskell said. “They just pressured us to force us to make mistakes. That sort of defense against us on the perimeter worked and they were well coached.”

“It was our first conference game of the season, and we wanted to just put this rival game in both the high schools because of the great atmosphere,” Coach Tim DeBerry said.

The Prairie View boys’ basketball team defeated Brighton 69-57.

“The kids came together to play tonight,” he said.

“Brighton’s just a team they want to play against.”

DeBerry said the Thunderhawks are where they need to be going into league play.

“We want to get better at leagues and that was our goal starting with this game,” he said. “This is one step getting there.

“Our players try to get up there and get on you, playing as hard as we can.”

In league play, DeBerry said, Aurora Central, Northglenn and Rangview will be a few tough teams.

He said the Brighton win helped the team out with confidence.

He started playing basketball when he was 4.

“I’ve literally had a passion for it ever since I picked up a basketball,” he said. “I play because I love it, and it’s simply one of the most fun things that I could do. It’s something that makes me happy.”

Schwindaman said the rival game was one of the best team wins that PVHS has ever had.

“It was tough knowing we had to try and shut down a much bigger and stronger

Bulldog team, but ultimately we did it by just demanding more from each other, and leaving no room for excuses as to why someone didn’t get a rebound or fight for a loose ball,” he said. “I think I got a little more attention from the Bulldogs defense, but that left plenty of room for my teammates to be able to do what they do best and play basketball.”

Schwindaman thinks his team is right where it needs to be going into leagues. He said it just needs to remain focused and keep their eyes forward not thinking about the past games, but looking ahead.
