The Class of 2021

From the first day members of the Class of 2021 walked through the doors of the Upper School for their Freshman year, they immersed themselves in all the opportunities CA has to offer—winning State Championships, earning academic honors, creating adventurous works of art, and serving their community in unique ways. With each passing year, they had no reason to believe theirs would not be a typical Senior year, spent enjoying all the beloved traditions of the CA Senior class.

Then, in March 2020, their world changed and it quickly became clear—with omnipresent masks, canceled college trips, rearranged sports seasons, changes to their daily schedules—that these Seniors would not experience the year they expected. And yet, despite a global pandemic and with a national racial reckoning, the Class of 2021 distinguished themselves by adapting to their new normal and leading the entire CA student body.

This class dealt with the challenges of the present while planning for the future—looking ahead to varied careers in Law, Medicine, Theater, Education, Computer Science, Music, Business, Engineering, Finance, Painting, and Environmental Science. When it came time to write reflections on their years at CA, there was not a single word of complaint about what they had missed. Instead, they expressed gratitude for the support they had received from their teachers, coaches, mentors, and fellow class members. Class of 2021, we congratulate you on your Commencement, and we thank you for inspiring all of us to live the CA mission—as curious, kind, courageous, and adventurous learners and leaders.

3

Renna Pauline Allan

At CA since: First Grade

Powerful Experience: Before COVID, my friends and I would hang out in the library every morning. It was such a simple tradition, but it allowed us to spend some quality time together and just have a good start to any given day.

Community Impact Project: I made cloth masks and donated them to Volunteers of America.

Favorite CA Tradition: Interim is my favorite CA tradition because it allows students to engage in activities that they wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to explore. I took a glassblowing Interim, and in the span of one week, I was able to make a few pieces that I’m proud of. It was something that I’ve always been interested in, but I would never have been able to do it if it weren’t for CA.

Transformational Experience

I Will Remember: I took up tap dancing my Junior year. Ms. Zaremba always encouraged me to practice harder and dedicate more time to dancing. Thanks to her, I was able to become a better tap dancer in the span of just a few months.

What Made me Happiest at CA: teachers and friends have always been there to help me when I need it. I’ve formed some strong connections with people that I think will last.

Immediate Plans: University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Calif., to study Pre-Medicine.

4

Eve (Evie) Ryan Angevine

At CA since: First Grade

Powerful Experience: As a Senior, I led two PlatFORUM discussions at our annual diversity conference. I was able to watch my classmates grow and learn, and I felt really lucky to have the opportunity to have important conversations.

Community Impact Project: help provide resources for people experiencing homelessness. Customers would say how relieved they felt to find furniture and other affordable items. I am glad I could help make their lives even a little less stressful.

Favorite CA Tradition: enjoyed the Back-to-School Picnic because it was such a fun way to celebrate with friends and see my teachers right before the first day of school. It turned the nervous energy about the first day into excitement and was a great way to bring the community together.

Transformational Experience

I Will Remember: When I was a Junior, I was able to participate in an exchange program in Spain. Staying in another country for two weeks and learning about the culture was something I will always remember.

What Made me Happiest at CA: Whether through extracurricular activities like Mock Trial or just everyday classes, I developed friendships that made me feel supported and appreciated. I was excited to come to school every day and get to be around people who inspired me to be my best self. Additionally, the teachers at CA were so amazing and so dedicated to helping their students. I am so grateful to have gone to school in a place where everyone wanted you to succeed and was eager to help.

Immediate Plans: Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colo., to study Political Science and History.

5

Riley (Ry) Everett Barthels

At CA since: First Grade

Powerful Experience: During my Sophomore year, I volunteered in what had been my First Grade classroom. I spent an hour and a half once a week helping groups of First Graders who were reading their comprehension books, and I had a chance to stay connected to my First Grade teacher, Ms. Giarusso.

Community Impact Project: I built a Little Free Library and installed it at a playground in my neighborhood. I spoke with several people in my neighborhood organization to find the best place to put this library, which I built, painted, and installed myself.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Giant Relay Day, from competing in the Field Day activities back in Lower School to spending a day on campus with my friends at the end of each year in Upper School.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: I will vividly remember my 11 trimesters of Tech Theater. From the first time that I ran sound cues from the booth back in Seventh Grade, I’ve been in love with CA theater, and the skills I’ve learned in this class (including carpentry, tiling, and some electrical work) will undoubtedly serve me well.

What Made me Happiest at CA: was backstage or in the booth, being on the running crew for performances has been my happiest time at CA. The anxious energy in the hours before opening night and the profound connection I feel with the cast and crew when the last show ends make for a uniquely happy, bittersweet emotion unlike any other.

Immediate Plans: Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colo., to study Education.

6

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: During the lacrosse season of my Freshman year, I got pulled up from JV to play with Varsity in the playoffs. When I got called onto the field in a close game, it was a dream come true. I’ll never forget that rush of adrenaline and the feeling of winning my first game on Varsity.

Community Impact Project: awareness about teenage homelessness in the Denver area by working with Urban Peak. I created pamphlets encouraging people to inform others about homeless teens and donate to an often overlooked group of people in need.

Favorite CA Tradition: Open mics give students the ability to talk and share with the whole school. Conversations like these facilitate an openness within the community and bring students together.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: CA has taught me that more often than not, people are willing to assist you in what you need, big or small. Don’t be afraid to reach out. Learning this has shifted my approach to almost every situation when I find myself stuck.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: happy and to be fly fishing wherever I am.

What Made me Happiest at CA: to say “Hi” to everyone in the halls to knowing that my teammates had my back on the lacrosse field, the friendships I formed at CA are what made me the happiest. While the lunch is good, and the classes are amazing, these friendships made the entire high school experience a blast.

Immediate Plans: Indiana University Bloomington, Bloomington, Ind., to study Business Management and Finance.

7

Virginia (Gigi) Lucille Beardsley

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: Participating in HOPE and being able to supply families with necessities during the holiday season were rewarding experiences and provided me with valuable leadership opportunities.

Community Impact Project: sustainable face masks from recycled materials. This was an effort to help stop the spread of COVID while also being conscientious about the environment.

Favorite CA Tradition: I thoroughly enjoyed my Freshman and Sophomore Interims skiing in Aspen and canoeing down Labyrinth Canyon. Interim was a good way for students from different grades to bond through fun experiences.

Transformational Experience

I Will Remember: I will remember the time I’ve spent with my friends. Whether this was the time spent during passing periods, in the classroom, or on the athletic field, the relationships I’ve made at CA will definitely stay with me.

What Made me Happiest at CA: The healthy environment at CA has made me the happiest. The friendly faces here have made it easy for me to make long-lasting friendships and valuable connections with my teachers.

Immediate Plans: Tulane University, New Orleans, La.

8

Grady Moore Behrhorst

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: 2C(s)+ 3H2(g)+ ½O2(g) —> C2H5OH(l) = -278 ΔHf° (kJ/mol). This is an exothermic reaction, otherwise understood as heat being released in burning or explosion. Thank you, Ms. Jekel.

Community Impact Project: Working with CA friends, we raised money and collected 300 pounds of food that we donated to two nonprofits: Resilience1220, a depression awareness and teen counseling organization, and Mountain Backpacks, a nonprofit which supplies kids in need with backpacks and food.

Favorite CA Tradition: I really like Commencement. Watching the people I’ve made relationships with move on in the world is beautiful. It’s also sad because I remember all the fun memories and experiences we shared, and it reminds me that I love the CA community like family.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: During my REDI Lab experience with Mr. Thorpe, I started a YouTube channel, where I discussed meaningful topics with my friends and special guests. Mr. Thorpe is a really great teacher and facilitator of classroom activities and discussion.

What Made me Happiest at CA: I’m a skinny lad, but the weight room was pretty awesome. Coach Wes Kirk helped me understand the importance of work ethic. Weights humble a person like nothing else.

Immediate Plans: St. Lawrence University, Canton, N.Y.

9

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: At the inaugural Ice Hockey game my Freshman year—when hockey returned to CA after many years—the arena was packed with fans. It was a really amazing sight to see so many of our classmates out to support us, despite the fact we were a new team.

Community Impact Project: virtually at the Digital Smithsonian Archive, transcribing historical documents, so that they can be easily accessed and translated globally.

Favorite CA Tradition: I really enjoy the daytime festivities at Homecoming. There are games, a carnival, and lots of other fun activities for the whole school to enjoy.

Transformational Experience I

Will Remember: In my Statistics class, I completely changed and improved my ability to interpret a statistical study in the real world. Now, I question and dissect every prediction and study with the resources I have learned. This math class has had the biggest impact on the way I use math in real-life situations.

What Made me Happiest at CA: The highlight of every school day for me is playing in the jazz combo because I am making music with my friends and playing the songs that Mr. Jones arranges.

Immediate Plans: Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Fla.

10

Marin Belle Bomgaars

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: During my Freshman and Sophomore years, when my team won the State Lacrosse Championship, this culminating moment exemplified the strength of teamwork and dedication. The memories I have cherished most during my CA Lacrosse career are not the ones that can be recorded on a stats sheet; rather, they are the moments right after a goal is scored or an interception is made when all of my teammates are cheering. Their voices always serve to remind me that I am part of something much greater than myself.

Community Impact Project: and I visited patients at Saint Joseph’s Hospital, serving HABIC (Human Animal Bond in Colorado), an organization that sponsors animal therapy programs. I interacted with doctors, nurses, and patients in hopes of brightening their day.

Favorite CA Tradition: I’ve always enjoyed the first day of school, when the Seniors dress up and welcome the Freshmen in front of the Upper School. For Freshmen, it is a way of connecting with the entire Upper School, and for Seniors, it’s a time of celebration and appreciation.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: The annual HOPE fundraiser has instilled in me a sense of gratefulness, generosity, and empathy. The event is an opportunity to give back to the larger Denver community while connecting with friends and faculty at CA. It’s rewarding to see the joy that my classmates and I are able to provide for others as a result of simple acts like donating resources or serving food.

What Made me Happiest at CA: I’ve developed while at CA will last a lifetime. My teachers were always engaged and passionate about the subjects they were teaching, and my friends were a source of daily laughs and inspiration.

Immediate Plans: University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla.

11

Chloe Elizabeth Brants

At CA since: Fourth Grade

Powerful Experience: In the beginning of the year, I gave the first Senior Speech. Because of COVID, I delivered the speech over Zoom from a separate room in the Upper School. When I finished, I heard cheers and applause from students inside other classrooms around me, loud enough that I could hear them through the walls. The kindness that CA students showed taught me the importance of giving support to others. The smallest gestures can make a huge difference! I now strive to emulate this positivity and bring it into other people’s lives.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered for Horizons and tutored students in the Denver area who fell behind in schoolwork when their schools closed due to COVID.

Favorite CA Tradition: I love Giant Relay Day—especially the dunk tank and the popsicles. The weather is beautiful, everybody is so happy, and the day is so fun. It’s just a celebration of all the wonderful people at CA and all we’ve accomplished over the course of the year.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Participating in CA’s Mock Trial program has taught me how to think on the fly, the power of confidence, and the importance of teamwork. I loved every moment of Mock Trial, and all of our hard work was rewarded when we made it to the State competition.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I hope to have a farm in the woods with lots of chickens.

Immediate Plans: Tufts University, Medford, Mass.

12

Lily Katherine Brinker

At CA since: Kindergarten

Powerful Experience: After winning the classwide poetry contest CA held, a group of students and I made the trip to the University of Oklahoma for the Neustadt Lit Fest. We attended the annual award ceremony and got to meet the 2017 prize winner, poet Marilyn Nelson, and have her read each student’s poems.

Community Impact Project: Working with a couple of classmates, I set up an email system where students and faculty could send positive notes to each other to help everyone get through the pandemic. The faculty member and Advisory who sent the most letters got donuts as an extra incentive!

Favorite CA Tradition: I think having Senior Kindergarten Buddies is a great tradition. As a “Lifer,” it’s so meaningful to me. It brings our time at CA full circle because we had our own Senior Buddies at that age, too!

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: CA has been such a huge part of my life, and I’ve been so fortunate to get to know my classmates and teachers. I will always appreciate all the connections that I’ve made through and because of CA.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I have a variety of interests to explore over these next few years, but ultimately, I see myself outside of the U.S. doing a job I’m passionate about that makes an impact on the world.

Immediate Plans: Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, Calif., to study International Studies.

13

William Harrison Buecking

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: In my Senior year, I enrolled in the pilot program of REDI Lab for Seniors which focused on entrepreneurship. With the added freedom and resources, I was able to pitch my eSports Training Camp to MindSpark Learning. The respect that the executives of this successful organization gave me was nothing short of amazing, and I had never felt more exhilarated or accomplished in my high school career.

Community Impact Project: Through Project CAre, I’ve tutored Karen refugees from the Myanmar/Thailand border and developed relationships that I never would have foreseen.

Favorite CA Tradition: There is no award for winning on Giant Relay Day. It’s just a time for everyone to enjoy each other and partake in super fun activities. This event really showcases the community and connection the school has as a whole, which I value dearly.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Mr. Thomas’s clarity, vocabulary, passion, and knowledge about what he was teaching moved me in a way I never felt before. As a result, I worked on my vocabulary and clarity, not to copy Mr. Thomas, but because he showed me that the way you speak can leave a lasting impression.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: My dream is to combine my two passions, business and video games, and finding success involving both of them across multiple platforms.

Immediate Plans: Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas.

14

Peter Emerson Carpenter

At CA since: Sixth Grade

Powerful Experience: As a Junior, I worked the check-in desk for CA’s annual HOPE event, welcoming visitors and explaining the layout of the event. Not only did I practice my Spanish, but I was amazed to watch the event unfold, serving 2,000 attendees on CA’s campus. Each and every person I checked in had a unique story to tell, full of incredible resilience.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered with Trout Unlimited and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to restore greenback cutthroat trout populations to their native high-alpine streams, by backpacking baby trout miles upstream and releasing them into the water. I was grateful for the opportunity to protect Colorado’s native species!

Transformational

Experience I Will Remember:

As a STEM-focused student, I entered the Upper School accustomed to approaching questions looking for discrete solutions, like I would with a math problem. However, when I took Russian Literature, Mr. Thorpe helped expand my approach to education. By examining ambiguity and paradoxes in The Brothers Karamazov, I learned to embrace complex solutions to problems that may have more than one answer.

What Made me Happiest at CA: there is anything that COVID and remote learning have shown me, it’s that I am happiest when I’m on CA’s campus. Here, I rarely ever feel alone. The incredible sense of community from everyone—teachers, students, faculty, staff—is something I have never experienced anywhere else. I feel supported when I succeed, but perhaps more important for my growth, I also feel comfortable being bold and making mistakes.

Immediate Plans: Stanford University, Stanford, Calif., to study Science or Engineering.

15

Henry Page Chesley-Vogels

At CA since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful Experience: I traveled to Cuba with a group of my classmates. While exploring cities such as Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad, I was able to practice my Spanish and meet some remarkable people. I was completely enchanted by Cuba’s vibrant culture and how certain parts of the country are essentially frozen in time.

Community Impact Project: onset of the pandemic in 2020, I have been virtually tutoring two brothers on a weekly basis through the Horizons Program to help them stay on top of their reading, writing, and math.

Favorite CA Tradition: I loved participating in Giant Relay Day ever since I was in Pre-K. Whether spending time with friends at the picnic, playing carnival games, or exerting all my energy in the Giant Relay events, I had a smile on my face throughout the whole day.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: I have discovered my true passions at CA (Piano, Music Theory, Juggling, and Soccer) and I will continue to pursue them with fervor and enthusiasm. Furthermore, CA has taught me valuable self-advocacy and leadership skills that I will continue using for the rest of my life.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: to be working as a veterinarian, engaging in my love of science and animal welfare. And perhaps I can have a side job where I play jazz piano at restaurants and cafes.

Immediate Plans: Davidson College, Davidson, N.C., to study Chemistry, Mathematics, and Music.

16

Meilani Ineke Louise Cole

At CA since: Third Grade

Powerful Experience: On the Spain Exchange Program, I immersed myself in a totally new place, using a language I wasn’t fluent in. I tried new things that I never would have gotten the opportunity to try otherwise. Making new friends while becoming more comfortable with using the Spanish language in day-to-day conversations were memorable experiences for me.

Community Impact Project: I prepared and donated more than 100 homemade dog treats to the Humane Society of the South Platte River.

Favorite CA Tradition: I remember being a Freshman and walking through the crowd of Seniors with a sliver of open space to get by. The rush I felt made me so excited to begin my high school experience. As a Senior, even with the pandemic, I was so excited to help create the same atmosphere that I had experienced on my first day of high school.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Every year on Interim, I would be placed with people whom I never really got a chance to hang out with or get to know, and by the end of the week, it would feel like we had known each other our whole lives. Getting to know new people and experiencing activities together were always a highlight to wrap up the end of the school year.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I can see myself out on the ocean scuba diving every day and then coming home to three massive dogs.

Immediate Plans: Chapman University, Orange, Calif.

17

At CA since: Sixth Grade

Powerful Experience: The primal scream that erupted from my Providence Cup Mock Trial Team when we learned we were going to the final round Junior year is irreplaceable. We’d worked non-stop for two months to prepare our case, and in that moment, we realized that we’d succeeded together— as a family.

Community Impact Project: with Denver Writes to plan and teach a summer-long novel-writing course for elementary and middle school students.

Favorite CA Tradition: CA traditions (started by me) are the Mock Trial mascots. My favorite not-me-started tradition probably has to be the Senior overalls. My friends and I headed to a park, spread out, and painted them for the first day of school.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Writing “The End” on the final page of my novel Freshman year was an experience that completely changed the way I thought about academics, writing, and myself. It was my first taste that my dream to be a writer wasn’t in the hands of anyone else. It was my first taste that I could do it.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I hope to be serving my country in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps, preferably stationed in California.

Immediate Plans: Yale University, New Haven, Conn., to study Applied Physics and Political Science.

18
Jordan Alexandra Davidson

At CA since: Tenth Grade

Powerful Experience: The Canoe Labyrinth Canyon Interim in my Sophomore year was a great experience because I camped outside for the first time in my life, and I met many new people.

Community Impact Project: Horizons Club at CA, I tutored a third grade Horizons student in reading. It was great to see how quickly the student progressed.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Faculty Follies right before Winter Break. I like it because it brings the entire Upper School together, and it is always great to watch.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: A transformational experience for me has been how helpful the CA community is. Everyone is always willing to help you with whatever you are doing, and it is great to always be supported with everything. This made my time at CA great.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I see myself living in The Netherlands pursuing my career in finance.

Immediate Plans: University of Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands, to study Econometrics and Operations Research.

19

Ella Marie DelZotto

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: Being a member of the Field Hockey and Soccer Teams has been a powerful experience for me because it has allowed me to create friendships with people in other grades, as well as be a part of a competitive and supportive environment.

Community Impact Project: sustainable face masks that were donated to friends and family. I was able to set a good example to support COVID regulations while also making environmentally friendly decisions.

Favorite CA Tradition: On the first day of school, when all of the Seniors dress up and greet the incoming Freshmen with energy, it is always fun to see the Freshmen connect with the Seniors right away and create a lasting connection between grades.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: As a Freshman, I had a great experience connecting with the members of my Senior Community Leadership Team (CLT). I enjoyed every opportunity we had to see them because it was fun, and I could learn from students who were older than me. Because of the impact that experience had on me as a Freshman, being a Senior CLT has been important because I am able to do what my Senior CLTs did for me, mentoring and creating lasting connections with the Freshmen.

What Made me Happiest at CA: Coming to school each day has made me happy because I am able to see both my classmates and my teachers. I will always remember the friendships I have made with others, as well as the connections I have created with teachers.

Immediate Plans: Tulane University, New Orleans, La.

20

Nicholas (Nick) Stephen Dietrich

At CA since: Kindergarten

Powerful Experience: memorable experience was winning the Boys Tennis State Championship for the first time in the history of CA’s tennis program.

Community Impact Project: My friend and I collected tennis racquets from the CA community. We did a two-day collection drive, gathered racquets following COVID safety guidelines, and donated them to the Horizons tennis program, which I run.

Favorite CA Tradition: experienced the All-School Assembly at the beginning of each school year since Kindergarten (except for this year, when it was virtual). It is always exciting to see all the grades come together and get ready for the start of the year.

Transformational Experience I Will

Remember: At CA, I learned that it is okay to ask for help. All of my teachers readily made themselves available if I ever had a question or needed assistance in a class, and that made me feel comfortable asking for help when I need it.

What Made me Happiest at CA: I have had the same group of friends since Ninth Grade, and we essentially have grown up together. My time with them has made me happier than I could ever ask to be.

Immediate Plans: Stanford University, Stanford, Calif., to study Economics or Psychology.

21

James Howard Doolittle III

At CA since: First Grade

Powerful Experience: As a Freshman on the Ultimate field, I had just made an amazing catch for a score, and the entire team rushed the field. Three years later, one of our Freshmen made an amazing catch, and I was part of the group that rushed the field to congratulate them. It really brought my time with the sport full circle for me.

Community Impact Project: with an organization called 7 Cups, a website that connects people to trained, caring listeners for free emotional support. I provide an outlet for people to talk with me anonymously.

Favorite CA Tradition: The first day of the year, the entire Senior class stands outside the Upper School and cheers as the Freshmen march slowly through the yelling, music, and general chaos to be welcomed by the Seniors.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: After being at CA for more than 13 years, I still remember my first day of school as a seven-year-old, walking off the bus and into my First Grade classroom, where I was greeted by a huge smile from Mrs. Adcock.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: myself running across a Broadway stage in a complete panic as I move a set piece, or sitting in a booth as a stage manager in complete panic, as I watch the people on stage moving set pieces. Either way, I will be somewhere in a theater in a complete panic.

Immediate Plans: DePaul University, Chicago, Ill., to study Stage Management, Technical Theater, and Design.

22

At CA since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful Experience: Being a part of the Choir program at CA creates a strong sense of community that is strengthened through singing and being vulnerable together. I have not only learned about the importance of music, but also about the importance of supporting those around you and forming a lasting bond.

Community Impact Project: students in math and chemistry via Zoom through the organization Heart and Hand Center. I formed bonds with the students that I worked with, learned how to become a more effective communicator, and realized that making a small effort to help often exceeds your original intentions.

Favorite CA Tradition: Giant Relay Day has been a favorite activity of mine all the way through my CA career. The race between the faculty, staff, alumni, and parents is a good competitive tradition to conclude the school year in a unique way.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Ten years from now, I will look back at my time at CA and remember the people who have created a nurturing community. I will remember my friends, my teachers, my coaches, and most important, my mom (Catherine Laskey who works at CA).

What Made me Happiest at CA: Many of my friends go back to Middle School, Lower School, or even back to Pre-Kindergarten. Having a group of friends that support me and also never fail to make me laugh is something that I count on.

Immediate Plans: University of Southern California, Los Angeles, Calif., to study Pre-Law.

23

Samuel (Sam) Louis Ehrman

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: My most powerful CA experience was creating a group of friends that I can look back on and remember the countless fun times I had with them. Whether it was during lunch or in class, we always had a great time.

Community Impact Project: Working with a small group, I created hand-made reusable masks for people in need of PPE. We hoped that this would help reduce the infection rate of COVID in our community.

Favorite CA Tradition: It may sound strange, but the Upper School lounges are my favorite tradition. I spent so much time in the lounges each year, it was fun to “graduate” to the next lounge each year. I could always relax and talk with friends whenever I stopped by.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: I started Rock Climbing in Freshman year, and continued it through my Senior year. It was amazing to be exposed to this unique sport, and I will definitely continue to climb after CA because of the community and vibe it brings.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I hope to be at a science company doing top-notch research for real-world problems.

Immediate Plans: Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis, Mo., to study Scientific Research.

24

Marlyn Estrada

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: I went to China with my classmates Freshman year. I grew closer with my classmates while exploring a new country, and I was also able to practice my Chinese while having fun.

Community Impact Project: my church in order to help people in my community. My family has been part of this program for many years. We help make food to sell and give the money to people in need. We have raised money for a family friend who needed a heart transplant, my little cousin who has cancer, and my mom’s friend who had breast cancer.

Favorite CA Tradition: Interim is a great way to meet new people from other grades and build friendships. Going on outdoor Interims has allowed me to enjoy time with people I wouldn’t get to know if it were not for Interim.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: I learned how to communicate with my teachers and build connections with them. I will always remember these teachers because they have helped me throughout classes and were always supportive.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: In 10 years, I see myself traveling for work.

Immediate Plans: Whitman College, Walla Walla, Wash., to study International Business.

25

It was a great way to have people talk about their own experiences and inform others about topics related to inclusivity and diversity.

I love the idea of the Freshmen being able to ask questions to people who have spent three years experiencing what they are about to go through for the first time.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Mr. Gallop was a teacher who really demonstrated how important computer science was in the real world, and he was able to show us how other subjects are applied to the real world also. Community Impact Project: I led a STAMP workshop about how certain social justice movements were perceived historically and how they are portrayed now. Reading Camus’ The Stranger in Mr. Holland’s Philosophy & Lit class, going to a Hindu Temple for Mr. Thorpe’s Indian Lit class, and analyzing Bladerunner for Fiction and Film with Mr. Holland expanded my definition of what an English class looks like.

Thus, for my CIP, I worked with Horizons to tutor a student, and I really enjoyed helping others gain confidence in their learning.

Favorite CA Tradition: I had a meaningful experience with the three members of my Community Leadership Team (CLT) as a Freshman, so as a Senior I was very excited to pay it forward and offer the same experience to students transitioning to high school. I hope that in a few years’ time, I’ll catch up with a current advisee and learn that they are now a CLT, building those same relationships with their Freshmen.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: In the last few years, I’ve been very involved in HOPE, which hosts an annual event in the winter where we provide more than 2,000 Denver shelter residents with clothing, toiletries, holiday toys and gifts, basic medical care, and a hot meal. I’m very grateful for the role I get to play, and I love encouraging others to join in the day—in fact, it’s become a family tradition to do so.

Powerful Experience: The most powerful experience I had during my time at CA was being a part of the 5280 Interim, where students did scavenger hunts in downtown Denver. It was my Freshman year and connecting with students outside of my grade level was really nice. I also felt like I was learning more about the city I grew up in, and it made me have a deeper appreciation for the world around me.

Community Impact Project: Through the Casa de Paz organization, I wrote letters to immigrants in detention. The letters were to show emotional support and to help them feel as though there are still people there for them, making an effort to help them.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition at CA would be Community Leadership Team. As a Freshman, having Seniors give advice and guidance about the high school experience was a great way to ease into a completely different environment. It made me feel welcome and prepared to be at CA, and it helped me connect with students outside of my grade level.

Community Impact Project: dog toys out of old T-shirts and tennis balls and donated them to The AntiCruelty Society. The Anti-Cruelty Society is dedicated to creating a caring community by helping animals and educating people. When I heard about this organization, I knew it was the place where I wanted to volunteer because of my love for animals.

Powerful Experience: Playing on the Girls Golf Team, I have made friends, both from CA and other schools, won two team State Championships, and have developed wonderful connections with my coaches. My coaches would always come up to me and say, “Focus on the next shot because that’s what counts.” Although the point of the game is to win, you should have fun while winning.

Community Impact Project: For my CIP project, I continued to work with my mother and the Food Bank of the Rockies bagging food for people who are on the brink of homelessness.

Favorite CA Tradition: At Faculty Follies, the teachers come up with the most creative comedy skits about the Upper School, and it’s always a fun send-off into Winter Break.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Although my Senior year has not turned out the way I expected because of COVID, it is a year I will never forget. There are things that I truly miss at CA—the crowded and loud cafeteria room during lunch, the dances, playing golf with my teammates, and most of all, just hanging out with my friends after school. I took all of these things for granted. COVID has made me appreciate CA, my friends, and my family more.

Community Impact Project: a shipment of personal protective equipment (PPE) to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center for the Indigenous Communities around the Four Corners region. Because of the incredibly short supply of essential resources like face masks, latex gloves, hand sanitizer, and sanitizing wipes within Native American communities, I decided to take direct action to provide them with supplies they needed to survive.

Favorite CA Tradition: On Interim, I have gone canoeing, canyoneering, and have also had the privilege to learn about wolves, film an Art House Movie, and take a deep dive into archaeology and the prehistory of our region. On each of those trips, I had experiences, made memories, and learned valuable lessons that I will never forget for the rest of my life.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember:

Community Impact Project: I donated clothes to the Evergreen Christian Outreach program to assist the needs of my surrounding community.

Community Impact Project: I refereed for the Fourth Annual Colorado High School Adapted Basketball Tournament, a tournament involving kids with special needs. It was really fun to watch these athletes because they were so happy to see their hard work pay off after practicing for eight weeks.

Favorite CA Tradition: With so much excitement and energy, the first day of school is really fun because the Seniors pick a theme and spend time preparing the school for the incoming Freshmen.

Transformational Experience

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I hope to combine two things that I am passionate about: family and business. I see myself running a startup with my brother Xander.

Immediate Plans: Villanova University, Villanova, Pa., to study Finance and Entrepreneurship.

Miriam Maylin Rojo Gutierrez

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: The election campaign of former President Trump against President Biden was my most powerful Upper School experience. Of course, everyone has a different political viewpoint. CA held an Upper School Town Hall for students and teachers and discussed our social norms, such as listening to each other and respecting one another. Because of this experience, I think the whole Upper School truly connected and had a great discussion instead of going through the election in silence.

Community Impact Project: friend and I decided to do something that was Earth friendly, so we went around different parks and picked up the leftover trash. We made the places look cleaner and better for both the community and animals.

Favorite CA Tradition: Homecoming is my favorite CA tradition. It is a day full of fun and joy and is a day I look forward to.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: I never imagined myself delivering a Senior Speech, but I was encouraged to do one by friends, students, and faculty, and it has been one of the most memorable experiences here at CA. I’ve always been a shy person and don’t like public speaking, but with the support from CA, I had enough confidence to do it.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I see myself as a college graduate making everyone, even myself, proud of what I have accomplished.

Immediate Plans: Union College, Schenectady, N.Y.

78

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: Traveling to Haiti showed me the importance of a strong community. Nordette, the village where we lived, welcomed us with open arms. The joy the children felt surrounding their education reminded me how lucky I am to be at a school like CA. Evenings spent bonding over food and music formed connections that I believe will last a lifetime.

Community Impact Project: with the International Climate Action Challenge, a three-month long challenge asking participants from around the world to launch eco initiatives, big and small. A total of 128 people from 21 different countries committed to initiate or expand a total of 86 community or environmental initiatives during the challenge.

Favorite CA Tradition: The Senior Kindergarten Buddy program is a really great way for the Seniors to bond with our peers and younger CA students. It is always exciting to spend time with my buddy Ella, and she never fails to impress me.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: My time in the REDI Lab program coincided with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only am I more confident in my research and academic skills, I feel more prepared to understand my emotions and connect with others.

Immediate Plans: Pitzer College, Claremont, Calif., to study Environmental Science/Studies.

Community Impact Project: I worked with Animal Rescue of the Rockies, checking in with recent adopters to help their dogs settle into the family.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition has been collecting mementos from each CA theater production I’ve been a part of. Following each show, the tech crew and actors like to find little collectables to be able to remember that show.

Transformational Experience I Will

Remember: One of my fondest memories will always be making a show circle before each theater performance. All the actors and tech crew hold hands and spread magic between ourselves before beginning. Especially with end-of-the-year shows, this circle is always a beautiful send-off into the next chapter of our lives.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: making toast with jam in a cottage somewhere in Iceland. I would be getting ready to open my bookshop for the day.

Immediate Plans: Queen Mary University of London, London, England, to study Marine Biology.

Maya Jane Rutherford

At CA since: Ninth Grade

Powerful Experience: Playing Field Hockey, Girls Lacrosse, and Ice Hockey at CA were one of my favorite parts of high school. All of the teams were incredibly supportive, and I made such amazing friendships with my teammates. Additionally, having our hard work pay off in the State Championships for Field Hockey and Lacrosse was a rewarding feeling!

Community Impact Project: I worked with an organization called Denver City Lax that provides opportunities to play lacrosse to kids at no cost. I created video introductions to lacrosse, teaching the rules and some basic skills which City Lax could send out to new players. These videos helped get kids into lacrosse during COVID when Denver City Lax couldn’t go out to schools and show kids what lacrosse is all about!

Favorite CA Tradition: The Community Leadership Team (CLT) program at CA is so fun and special. As a Freshman, I looked forward to Advisories with my Senior CLTs, and I learned so much from them about how to succeed at CA.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: I went on a trip to Cuba during Interim my Sophomore year with CA, and it was an incredible experience. We got to explore Havana, learned about the interesting history, saw a ton of old cars, and even learned to box with some Cuban kids. We also got to see the beach and some of the more rural towns. Getting to experience such a different culture was a really impactful and transformative experience.

All of my teachers were so understanding and helpful with my return to school. This experience really made me realize how special and empathetic CA teachers are, and I am so grateful for all of them.

Community Impact Project: homemade dog treats and donated them to the Humane Society of the South Platte Valley. I collected extra food and treats and donated those as well. I learned a new skill, used it to help some dogs, and had so much fun while doing it!

Favorite CA Tradition: I have always loved the Halloween Day parade at CA. I remember walking through each building in my Halloween costume, and, now years later, I enjoy watching the parade and the smiling faces because it helps me reflect on my whole CA journey and how I have evolved.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Being a part of the Community Leadership Team at CA has taught me so much about what it means to be a compassionate, helpful, and authentic leader. Community Impact Project: During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked to research and find solutions for issues within the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities that were primarily caused by masks.

Favorite CA Tradition: Every year during the State Tournament for our Ultimate team, the Seniors on the team award the “Most Improved Player” with a fish! This tradition brings so much joy to the whole team.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Interim is an amazing opportunity to get out of the school setting and do something really outside the box with people you usually don’t interact with. You discover new interests and create new bonds with peers, and I can only hope I have similar opportunities in the future!

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I hope to still be living out West in a roomy studio loft, have a job that I love, a Jeep wrangler that I can take camping every month with friends, and a service dog that loves adventuring with me!

Immediate Plans: University of Redlands, Redlands, Calif.

83

Lewis (Lewie) Inman Sharp V

At CA since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful Experience: During PlatFORUM, we are able to come together as a community and exercise agency in our education as students. It is rare that students are provided with the opportunity to teach a class about a subject of their choosing, and even rarer that the students who take part are engaged and interested participants. This fills me with a tremendous sense of pride for our CA community.

Community Impact Project: I planted and ran a community garden with an elementary school near Denver to reach students who may not have access to fresh produce and to connect people to the joy of growing their own food.

Favorite CA Tradition: I most enjoyed bonding with my Kindergarten Buddy. I never thought of myself as someone who gets along with young children, but Milan was amazing! He has a fantastic sense of humor, and it was a privilege getting to know him.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: REDI Lab transformed me as an individual and a thinker. After taking part in this program, I was able to take the knowledge that I had acquired across my CA career and apply it in meaningful ways. In that sense, REDI Lab speaks to the quality of all of CA’s teachers and the school’s commitment to creative and insightful thinking.

84

At CA since: Sixth Grade

Powerful Experience: Being a part of the Girls Lacrosse Team and winning the State Championship my Freshman and Sophomore years were unforgettable experiences. But what has been most powerful for me is the bond I’ve formed with my teammates and coaches and the unmatched chemistry off the field that allowed us to be so successful.

Community Impact Project: for senior citizens through the Meals on Wheels program in the Denver Area. I wanted to add some joy to the meal delivery, especially to those who would have to be spending the holiday at home.

Favorite CA Tradition: I love how students are always cheering one another on at various events. Whether it’s sitting on the lawn together at a soccer game or walking through Ponzio Arts Center for a Portfolio Show, there always seem to be people hyping up one another for our different talents.

Transformational Experience

I Will Remember: I think CA taught me what it means to truly be a community and how to treat those around you with kindness and respect. Everyone looks out for one another and wants each other to succeed. Especially when I think of Ms. Jans encouraging me and other girls to take a shot at taking Computer Science, CA reflects a place that inspires us to take risks to find what we are passionate about.

What Made me

Happiest at CA: The friendships I’ve made have pushed me to be my better self every day, and I know our connections will last long beyond the time I leave the CA hallways.

Immediate Plans: Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., to study Computer Science and Economics.

Powerful Experience: Seeing a play I wrote performed by professional actors at Curious Theater combined my interests of theater and creative writing and gave me the fulfillment of watching my work come to fruition.

Community Impact Project: three summers in high school working with the Horizons program, I tutored a Horizons Second Grade student via Zoom.

Favorite CA Tradition: Throughout the plays and musicals I have acted in, I’ve enjoyed the post-show traditions: screaming a countdown backstage, stampeding down the creaky steps of Froelicher Theatre to the basement dressing rooms, chatting with friends who have come to see the show, and having raucous dinners with the cast and crew after the show.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Being a part of the swim team, especially swimming the 500-yard race, taught me grit. During one “500,” my cap and goggles slipped off and I had to finish the long race with my hair in my face and water in my eyes. It certainly wasn’t fun, but that race has become the touchstone for other challenges in my life—if I managed to finish that race, then I can persevere through anything.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I hope to be working on my second best-selling novel, living in a cottage on the beach in San Diego or on a ranch with sheep and horses, and working on historical costumes to wear to balls and reenactment events.

Elle Margaret Smith

Powerful Experience: Taking different electives over the course of four years in Upper School, I have been challenged in classes I never planned on taking and have been able to explore a wide variety of subjects. REDI Lab also gave me a unique opportunity to pursue a project of my choosing.

Community Impact Project: Angel Heart, an organization that works to improve the health and well-being of people with life-threatening illnesses, by preparing and delivering meals tailored to an individual’s medical needs. I used my artistic interests to design meal bags, hoping my decorations would put a smile on the faces of people who receive them.

Staying in the church where undocumented immigrants find refuge made the experience feel authentic. Hearing the stories from the people living in El Paso was life-changing.

Community Impact Project: My Eyes to help blind people with ordinary tasks over the phone. The app allows you to FaceTime with blind people, so you can help them with things like finding objects around their room, identifying unknown objects, organizing groceries, and measuring ingredients for cooking.

Favorite CA Tradition: Homecoming because I love being able to spend the weekend with my friends, going to games and then going to the dance.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Something that I learned at CA that will stick with me forever is how to be a leader. Coming into high school I did not think of myself as a leader; however, as the years went by I was able to learn how to handle high-intensity situations and identify my strengths and weaknesses, so that I could become a better leader.

What Made me Happiest at CA: time with friends during my free block was one of the highlights of my time at CA.

Immediate Plans: Texas Christian University, Ft. Worth, Texas, to study Finance and Real Estate.

These discussions are centered around the topics I am most interested in and are facilitated by brilliant teachers who have a genuine interest in the growth of their students.

Community Impact Project: My CIP was the same as my Eagle Scout Service Project. I built a shed and fence at Zuma’s Rescue Ranch, where abused, neglected, abandoned, or sick horses are rehabilitated. The 350foot fence effectively created a new pasture for the horses and the shed provides shelter within that pasture.

Favorite CA Tradition: One of my favorite traditions at CA is Interim. Due to COVID, I only got to participate in two normal Interims, but I was still able to have great experiences, the most memorable of which was a rock climbing trip in Utah. Trips like this are a really great way to meet new people and discover new passions.

We worked on English and math together, and, by the end of the summer, he seemed more than prepared for Fifth Grade!

At CA since: Third Grade

Powerful Experience: Before the pandemic, almost every day, my friends and I would go to Raether Library for 20 minutes before school started, and we would play card games. The games really let me catch up with people I knew and form deeper bonds with them.

Community Impact Project: Last year, I volunteered with MaxFund, a nonprofit, no-kill shelter that takes care of cats. I helped feed the cats and clean their enclosures, but my favorite part was socializing the cats by playing with them and reading Shakespeare aloud to them.

Favorite CA Tradition: I love that we have Kindergarten Buddies. It’s a great way to connect the end of school to the very beginning. Seeing my Buddy always brightens up my day and inspires me.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: My only real exposure to programming before high school was Scratch, and I didn’t care for it. Then I took a trimester of Python with Mr. Gallop my Freshman year, and I loved it. I spent the next two years taking Computer Science classes with Ms. Jans, and, this year, I’m taking a Computer Science independent study. I never expected to find something that I loved, but these courses have opened so many doors for me and let me meet so many people involved in the programming and engineering community. For that, I am immensely grateful.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: Ten years from now, I hope that I’ll be working as an engineer or a computer scientist in a place with people who are passionate about what they do, where I can continue doing what I love, and where I can make a positive impact on the world.

Immediate Plans: Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, Calif., to study Engineering and Computer Science.

Powerful Experience: Leading Ethics Bowl this year has given me a family of people I never even expected to know. Every Ethics Bowl practice, we dive into complex conversations that end up being the highlight of my week. I joined Ethics Bowl on a whim, and now I’ve fallen in love with the family I’ve made.

Community Impact Project: at the Denver Rescue Mission to help prep, pack, and serve food to people experiencing homelessness. It was powerful to meet people living a very different life than mine and the experience kept me coming back.

Favorite CA Tradition: Interim has always been an opportunity for me to get completely out of my comfort zone. My Sophomore year, I went on the hut-to-hut Interim, and I felt more connected to the Earth around me, as I lay under the stars outside of the hut, talking with one of my closest friends.

Transformational Experience I Will Remember: Froelicher Theatre was torn down at the beginning of this school year, and that taught me a very valuable lesson: the thing that makes theater important to me is the community, not the place. CA’s theater community has welcomed me with open arms since the very beginning of Freshman year and has taught me to be the most genuine version of myself.

What

Made me Happiest at

CA: Every Thursday in between school and Mock Trial, everyone on our team would spend time together. When I think of the important relationships I’ve made at CA, this image always pops into my head. In these moments, I have always laughed the hardest and felt the most grateful for my friends.

Immediate Plans: Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., to study Social Studies and Philosophy.
