The Class of 2023

In their four years in the Colorado Academy Upper School, the members of the Class of 2023 have made an impact on everyone at CA. Teachers have been impressed by their thoughtful contributions, intellectual curiosity, and sharp wit. Lower School students have admired them as larger-than-life school leaders, who always have time for a high five and a smile. Middle School students have been touched by their kindness, inclusivity, and willingness to share a word of wisdom. And underclassmen have learned from their example how to make an indelible legacy by truly embracing the CA mission.

Since their lively construction-themed Ninth Grade greeting on Day One, extending through this year’s Upper School Interim, Seniors have excelled in the classroom, demonstrated their creative passions in the visual and performing arts, and vied in multiple athletic endeavors, including State Championships. They have openly welcomed new challenges and pushed their growth with the adoption of the Advanced Studies and Research curriculum. They have driven CA to redouble its sustainability and environmental stewardship efforts. They have helped reach the wider Denver community by extending their work to REDI Lab Coleman Center. They have enhanced their school and the Denver area with their commitment to community service and volunteerism through their work on HOPE and Community Impact Projects. And they have sought to better understand the world around them with its joys and heartbreaks.

Class of 2023, as you graduate and forge your path to new horizons, your CA legacy has been firmly entrenched. You will always have a home at Colorado Academy. Congratulations on your Commencement! We cannot wait to hear about your adventures as you make this world a kinder, more vibrant place.

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: My most transformational experience was learning how to go to school during a pandemic and all of the challenges that came along with it.

Community Impact Project: I focused on growing girls ice hockey in Colorado, providing players with a positive and healthy environment to foster the love of the game. Each week, I volunteered to coach the 14ers Girls Hockey Program. I also worked with Team Colorado and the Colorado Avalanche’s community outreach program to support a Girls Learn-toPlay hockey event.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is on game days, when teams pick a theme and go all out in their outfits.

What Made Me Happiest at CA:

I have loved being able to play various sports while at CA, especially Field Hockey. One of my favorite memories was winning the State Championship this year.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have been able to challenge myself athletically on different teams, and academically in ways that I did not expect—like doing a Senior Photography Portfolio.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Be sure to get enough sleep and learn how to manage your time.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be working in a career that I enjoy in the United States Navy.

Immediate Plans: Norwich University, Norwich, Vt., to study either History or Political Science, with a focus on Military and Conflict Studies.

Olivia Lauren Aguirre

At CA Since: Second Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Playing Lacrosse in Ninth Grade and learning from the Seniors was a powerful experience even though it was quite intimidating. I learned a lot about how to be a better teammate and athlete and was able to return the favor this year.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered for Mustangs Sports Club by coaching a Seventh Grade girls lacrosse team during the fall season.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the themes for each game day for Lacrosse and Field Hockey. I love dressing up in crazy outfits with my teammates and building a closer bond with them.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Finding a great group of friends has made me happy.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have surprised myself by trying new things such as Ceramics. I took this class Freshman year and then took it almost every trimester of high school and during the summer. I never would have thought it is something I like to do.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Build good relationships with your teachers and advocate for yourself.

Immediate Plans: Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., to study Economics and International Studies.

Abigail “Abby” Delina Alem

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I was able to attend the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) twice during my time at CA. It was so meaningful to be around hundreds of other people with shared experiences, values, and worldviews.

Community Impact Project: I was a student leader for the CIRCLE Organization’s STAMP Programs. STAMP, which stands for Students Taking Action and Making Progress, is a yearly conference for middle school students facilitated by high school students. This year, I was on the Senior Leadership Team and took on a greater role in both conference planning and workshop building.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: I’m grateful for the wide variety of classes I’ve taken, which wouldn’t have been possible without such dedicated teachers. I’ve been able to take many challenging courses—like Data Structures and Physics C—with the help of incredibly supportive teachers. I’m glad I’ve taken so many interdisciplinary courses (like Diseases That Have Changed the World) which let me focus on more than one topic at a time.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I found a love of ceramics that I never knew I had. I took my first Ceramics class in Ninth Grade and haven’t looked back. Since then, I’ve spent countless hours sitting in front of the wheel, trying to perfect my throwing technique. I’ve learned that I prefer speckled clay over everything else, and that I love experimenting with color. My favorite piece so far is a speckled orange jar, which currently holds ChapStick and loose change in my car.

Immediate Plans: Pomona College, Claremont, Calif.

Brogan Cole Andrus

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: My experience with COVID-19 really taught me the importance of friends and family in life. At any moment, we may not be able to see them for a long period of time; it’s important to cherish moments and meaningful experiences together.

CA Ice Hockey has taught me quite a lot too. I have learned that with any goal or dream in life, you can achieve it through hard work and dedication. I also learned that teammates are like a second family, and they will always be there to push you and make you better. Hockey has been extremely influential in my life and made me the person I am today.

Community Impact Project: I helped give out food to those in need and provide meals for families through the organization, We Don’t Waste.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition at CA is school dances. It’s a great way to spend time with friends and create memories on special occasions.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Sports have made me the happiest at CA. I have made many friends through sports, learned valuable lessons that will guide me through life, and created lasting memories and connections with teammates.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: Coming into Ninth Grade, I was only able to play the guitar. However, through CA’s Rock Ensemble, I was able to learn many different instruments including bass, drums, and piano.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: My advice is to try out something totally new and different that you’ve never done before. It may just change your life, and you will get a grasp on how to improve at anything.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope I am still playing hockey somewhere in the world, but also having a successful career and have gone through a meaningful college experience.

Immediate Plans:

Playing Junior Hockey for the Bridgewater Jr. Bandits in Bridgewater, Mass.

Claire Elizabeth Arney

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Weightlifting in Coach Kirk’s Strength and Conditioning program has been one of the most powerful experiences I’ve had at CA. It has made me stronger physically, more resilient and empowered, and has helped me work through challenges in my life.

Community Impact Project: I created the Respectful Discourse Club and led discussions as well as a formal debate that offered students a safe space to discuss current events no matter their political perspective.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Homecoming Saturday in the fall because I love watching all the different sports and supporting my classmates. It’s such a fun day to be with friends and cheer for your school.

What Made Me Happiest at

CA: CA has allowed me to belong to so many different communities and meet so many lifelong friends. I call myself an athlete, a basketball player, an actress, a civil servant, and a scholar and fully partake in all the experiences each role offers.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA:

In the fall of my Senior year, I received a lead role in the play. I had done plays in the past, but had never been passionate or serious about them until recently. I was proud of myself for the effort I put in to earn the role, and I ended up having an amazing and rewarding time.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Take advantage of everything CA offers and explore new things. Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be growing my green tech company and making a positive impact on our Earth.

Immediate Plans: Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., to study Chemistry and Spanish with a minor in Climate Studies.

Corbin Joseph Bank

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: After missing more than 10 days of class for Golf tournaments my Freshman year, I became more organized with my schedule and school work over the next three years of high school to accommodate the golf schedule.

Community Impact Project: In my role as a Food Director in HOPE, I managed food donations, reached out to local food banks, and helped organize food preparations for the day of the event. During the event, I distributed all the canned food we collected and served hot meals.

Favorite CA Tradition: Interim is my favorite CA tradition, because it provides time to socialize with others and develop new skills. During Junior year, I took part in the Throwing Rocks at Houses (Curling) Interim. I was able to collaborate with students from different grades and learn how to curl.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Beating my classmate Karl Gifford at chess is my happiest memory at CA.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I surprised myself by taking part in a number of opportunities, including Investment Club, HOPE, and Basketball.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Get your Innovation credits done early so you can have more class options in the future.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope that I am pursuing a career in business.

Immediate Plans: Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pa., to study Finance.

Dorothy “Dori” Nicole Beck

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: In Ninth Grade, I joined the Swim Team without knowing how to swim. I was initially terrified at the prospect of joining a Varsity team while not knowing the most fundamental parts of the sport. But, the team community was so kind and welcoming that all my fear immediately melted away. Community Impact Project: I volunteered throughout different programs at Children’s Hospital Colorado. I have volunteered at Children’s since Eighth Grade, and for my CIP, I continued to volunteer but focused my time on the emergency room and oncology floor. I also taught adaptive skiing to Children’s patients through the adaptive recreation program. I loved getting to know each child on a personal level, and I am so grateful that I was able to work with these amazing and resilient kids. What Made Me Happiest at CA: I love how I can walk into any building on campus and see a familiar face who has been a part of my life at some point. Whether it is students or teachers, everyone wants everyone else to succeed, and it is really empowering to be a part of such a supportive community.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: In Upper School, I branched out into new areas that I never would have considered otherwise. I loved having unique experiences like spontaneously joining Ultimate Frisbee as a Senior and participating in REDI Lab as a Junior.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be in the medical profession, preferably as either an emergency medicine physician or an oncologist. I also want to volunteer with organizations that are important to me and publish research that will advance our collective understanding of diseases.

Immediate Plans: University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va., to study Biomedical Engineering.

Sophie Claire Brants

At CA Since: First Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Winning the State Championship in Field Hockey was the best feeling in the world. To celebrate this win with my teammates and look back on all of the hard work we put in to take home a championship was a powerful experience.

Community Impact Project: I’m a member of the Horizons Club. Every Thursday, I work with a fourth grader, and I help him with English and homework.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Spirit Day. Since First Grade, it’s always been so fun to dress up, eat candy, and cheer for Gus!

What Made Me

Happiest at CA: I love being a part of CA’s closeknit community, and I’ve enjoyed the personal connections I’ve made with my teachers.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I’ve surprised myself by being rewarded when I take risks in the classroom.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth

Graders: Your high school experience is short and sweet, so don’t be so hard on yourself and never take those four years for granted.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be living in a city with a pet dog and a bird.

Immediate Plans: Tufts University, Medford, Mass.

Adelaide “Addie” Barrett Brown

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: The Community Leadership Team retreat really changed my perspective on my classmates and myself. It helped me connect with my peers on a deeper level, while also making me a more thoughtful person.

Community Impact Project: Over the summer, I did an internship with a friend as the executive producer’s assistant at Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival. We were in charge of his schedule, belongings, food, and getting him to and from places throughout the two festivals. We worked between 12-15 hours per day and got a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into curating a music festival. It opened my eyes to a very high-risk, high-reward industry and something that I would like to do in the future.

Favorite CA Tradition: I love Homecoming because of all the sports games that happen throughout the day. It’s so fun to be able to go from your own game to others and see every fall team play.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Being a part of multiple sports teams enabled me to not only have an outlet from the stress of school, but also make friends throughout different grades and challenge myself to learn and be adaptable.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I went into my Freshman year expecting to just stick with the other students from my middle school who also were going to CA—since the idea of making new friends was so daunting. Looking back on that now, I could not be more grateful for opening up, since it has given me some of my best friends and led me to meet amazing people.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Get involved and don’t be afraid of trying different things. In my Sophomore year, my friend and I joined the Basketball program for fun—having never played—but this forced me to challenge myself in a new sport and helped me make new friends.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be happy in whatever I do.

Immediate Plans: Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., to study Communications.

Emma Deyo Carpenter

At CA Since: Sixth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: One of the most powerful experiences I’ve had at CA was taking the Supreme Court class. This class challenged me to analyze cases holistically and taught me how to defend my opinions. In the process, I found a love for policy and grew an interest in studying it in the future.

Community Impact Project:

My friend Ashley Hagen and I started the Environmental Club at Colorado Academy to increase sustainability on campus. Our mission is to promote environmentalism by fostering collaboration, supporting a diversity of opinions, and setting achievable goals to create sustainable changes on the CA campus.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The community at CA is truly what makes me the happiest. Whether getting cheered on during a tough swim race or just hanging out in the lounge, my favorite memories are centered around my friends and teammates.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I decided to take my first Ceramics class at CA. I have found an artistic side of myself that I didn’t know existed.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders:

Pursue the classes that truly pique your interest, even though they may be challenging. At the end of the day, the classes that have impacted me the most have been the ones that push me to think critically and outside my comfort zone.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be exploring the world, hiking mountains, and enjoying nature, as I pursue a career in the engineering or conservation field.

Immediate Plans: Dartmouth College, Hanover N.H., to study Engineering or Environmental Science.

Emerson-Ellis “Emerson” Coleman

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Junior year REDI Lab was a new, out-ofthe-box learning experience for me. I stepped away from my everyday life and looked at how different parts of the world are affected by climate change—specifically through coral bleaching.

Being part of the Community Leadership Team program has helped me work through problem-solving when things don’t go as planned. I have not only learned what kind of a leader I am, but the CLT program has also allowed me to practice my communication skills and positivity.

Community Impact Project: Partnering with the Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation summer school program, I tutored and assisted teachers working with socioeconomically underserved children. The students worked on STEM projects, coding, business and finance presentations, and more. I also spent time with them outside, playing Down by the Banks and tag on the playground.

Favorite CA Tradition: The first day of school when Seniors welcome Ninth Graders to the high school sets an excellent tone for the rest of the school year. Everyone is so excited, and the energy radiates all around campus.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: My friends and the CA community have welcomed and supported me over the past four years. They have made my experience at CA truly incredible and unforgettable.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have surprised myself at CA by stepping out of my comfort zone, not only during REDI Lab, but also REDI Lab Interim. We traveled to Estes Park and hiked in the snow. I was able to see my peers and teachers outside of a classroom environment.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I would advise incoming Ninth Grade students to put themselves out there when first arriving at high school. Getting to know your teachers and attending Help Time are so important and will make all the difference.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I plan to travel as much as possible and potentially work abroad. The most important thing is to do meaningful work that I love!

Immediate Plans: Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C., to study Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.

Aidan James Collins

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: A powerful experience I have had at CA has been participating in the Senior-Kindergarten Buddy program. By spending time with my Kindergarten Buddy, I have been able to step away from the stress of high school and the college process and reflect on how I’ve grown as a person since I was that age.

Community Impact Project: For my Community Impact Project, I volunteered for Project C.U.R.E., a nonprofit organization committed to medically helping third-world countries. While volunteering for the organization, I was in charge of organizing, packing, and shipping donated medical supplies to countries in need. Currently, most of Project C.U.R.E.’s donated goods are being sent to Ukraine to help out underfunded communities affected by the war.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the Homecoming All-School Assembly and pep rally. By bringing together the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, CA is able to create an ecstatic atmosphere like no other.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Being involved in the CA Lacrosse program has made me happiest at CA. From the Spring Break trip to playing in close overtime games, I have felt as if I have joined a second family and brotherhood through the Lacrosse Team.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: During my time at CA, I have stepped out of my comfort zone more times than I thought I would. From trying Ceramics for the first time to trying a new sport in golf, I have grown as a person and made unforgettable experiences that I will look back on for the rest of my life.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Don’t be shy. Everyone at CA is so kind and welcoming.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to have moved back to Colorado where I will spend my winters skiing. During the summer, I hope to travel the world and experience new places and meet new people.

Immediate Plans: Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., to study Finance.

Anna Elizabeth Colpack

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: My relationships with students, faculty, and staff at CA have had a powerful impact on my life on many levels. It’s crazy to think that I’ve known most of these people since I was five. From the random hallway or lunchroom conversations with staff, passing periods in lounges spent giggling with friends, and rants in advisory after a long day, I am grateful for it all.

Community Impact Project: I worked with Alzheimer’s residents to create paintings, drawings, and forms of self expression. The process included time for me to instruct residents on how to use simple tools like a paintbrush. In turn, this taught me to be patient and grateful for what I have now in life. Our memories, our minds, our selves—it can all be lost—but happiness may still be found in a brief moment.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Interim! One of my favorite Interims was mountain biking in Fruita my Junior year. I spent an entire week with teachers I’d never had, students I’d never talked to, and even a raccoon that visited our food supply during the night.

What Made Me Happiest at

CA: The friendships and connections I made on the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Teams have brought me the most happiness at CA. In high school sports, you are obligated to show up every day, even on days when you just want to go home—but you do it for your teammates. High school sports have taught me how to work through problems, obstacles, and losses with others. This bond between teammates carries over in life off the field, as I know we’ll always have each other’s backs.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: CA has given me the creative freedom and support to be a multidimensional individual. I would have never followed so many passions, or taken the classes I did, without encouragement from my teachers. I felt supported every step of the way in finding myself and am confident that I have a good grounding in my morals.

Immediate Plans: Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif.

Zoe Katherine Cope

At CA Since: Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Throughout high school I have worked every year at HOPE, CA’s nonprofit club, helping Denver residents throughout the winter season. Working as Co-President with my team this year, I was able to help hundreds of families receive clothes, gifts, personal care items, eye screenings, vaccines, and more, and I could not be more proud and grateful for everyone who volunteered.

Community Impact Project: For my Community Impact Project, I worked with WE ALL RISE, a coalition that is globally partnered with the United Nations and dedicated to achieving gender equality. Through my work, I researched, drafted, and published six detailed infographics for their social media platforms to educate the masses on powerful women and current gender equality issues.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the All-School Assembly and pep rally during Spirit Week. Since Kindergarten, I have loved gathering with the school, high-fiving Gus’s hand, and trying to catch all the CA merchandise that flies my way.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Making relationships with friends and teachers that will last forever has made me love this school and made me so happy.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: While at CA, I have challenged myself to jump into many forms of arts, academics, and clubs, leaving me with skill sets in many disciplines.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I would encourage all Ninth Graders to challenge themselves in all arenas. Don’t limit yourself to one thing just because you think you may be best at it. Try everything. Run for Community Council, take that hard class, apply for REDI Lab, go on that Interim, start a club, and give a Senior speech. The opportunities are endless, and I encourage you to try and experiment with all you can during your time at CA.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be happily working in private equity.

Immediate Plans: University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo., to study Finance.

Joshua Genta Corn

At CA Since: Seventh Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Walking back into the Upper School after a long remote-learning experience and seeing everyone in person again was a powerful moment. It made me appreciate the little things we take for granted and being present in the moment.

Community Impact Project: I was a tutor for the Horizons Club. I paired with a second grader this year at Knapp Elementary, and we worked through math and English textbooks together. Being a tutor was a completely new experience for me, and this role taught me the value of education and mentorship, as well as appreciation for my own mentors.

Favorite CA Tradition: As a Freshman, it was a great way to start Upper School when all the Seniors welcomed us into the building on the first day. Standing on the other side four years later welcoming the incoming Ninth Graders was a fullcircle moment and definitely my favorite CA tradition.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Being part of such a close-knit community and always seeing familiar faces made me happy. I will not forget the friends and connections I’ve made here, and I hope to keep in touch with a lot of people after we graduate.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to have many connections with the Athletic Department due to my off-campus sport— Boys Swimming—but I was able to still maintain strong relationships with people like Coach Kirk, Coach Hill, and my Middle School sports coaches.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Do not hesitate to use all of the great resources at CA—from advisory, CLT, Help Time, athletics, etc.—to not only be successful in school but also have a fun high school experience.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: Hopefully, I’ve graduated from college and will be busy with a job or something else. I want to travel the world, and maybe start a business with my friends in Japan. Immediate Plans: Columbia University, New York, N.Y., to study Engineering.

Muckleet “Millie” Taye Degefa

At CA Since: Sixth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: For my Seventh Grade Interim, my peers and I took a trip to Costa Rica to help build a new classroom for a local school. My favorite part of this experience was spending time with my host family and classmates. My host family, peers, and I would sit in a circle every night while we ate pineapple and played card games to pass the time. I loved how we were able to connect and have fun together despite the language barrier between us.

Community Impact Project: I helped tutor Horizons students. I have been tutoring since my Junior year, and this past year I was paired with a third grader and met with her every week to help her improve her math, writing, and reading skills.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Taste of CA, because I love learning about the different cultures and communities that make up CA, and I always enjoy trying the delicious foods that everyone brings.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: What made me the happiest during my time at CA was being able to spend time with my friends and create new memories with them.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: My advice to incoming CA Ninth Graders would be to take advantage of Help Time and to always go see teachers whenever you have a question or are struggling with something from class.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to be pursuing a career in dentistry while also traveling the world.

Immediate Plans: University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va., to study Biology.

Ava Elizabeth DelZotto

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I learned to ‘think before doing’ Ninth Grade year. I was in advisory when my classmate Arantza and I decided it would be a good idea to try a flip we saw on TikTok. It occurred to me in the ER, later that night, while I was getting checked for a brain bleed, that the flip was, in fact, a very bad idea. The concussion and broken nose forced me to think more about the consequences of dumb decisions.

REDI Lab was an incredibly powerful experience for me. This was the first time I truly got to experience creating my own curriculum. I studied neurodiversity and the importance of self advocacy. I fell so in love with this type of work that I decided it is what I want to study in college. Additionally, I have continued my work in this area, tutoring kids with learning disorders to support the special needs community.

Community Impact Project: I won the Jennifer Wu Fellowship, so my project titled ‘A ShovelReady Project Kids Will Dig’ doubled as my CIP project. I created a curriculum for underresourced children to teach them the fundamentals of patience, teamwork, and responsibility.

Favorite CA Tradition: I love hanging out with my Kindergarten Buddy. My Buddy is so cute, and I have so much fun doing crafts with her!

What Made Me Happiest at CA: I have met some of my favorite people in my advisory. We have created such a strong bond. Junior year, we created the one and only “rage board” to share our stress about school, and it was a great way to laugh off stress. (I highly recommend it!)

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I like Physics. That says a lot for me because I have never been a math person. So, I figured I would strongly dislike it but wanted to challenge myself. Turns out, I actually really like it. I even find myself doing problems for fun at night.

Advice for Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Become close with your advisory. Obviously, it is a little awkward the first year, but once you grow past that stage, you will become friends with people you would never have been close with otherwise.

Immediate Plans: Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., to study Human Development and Cognitive Science on the Pre-Law track.

Tylar Elizabeth Dillon

At CA Since: Tenth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: My CA experience has been filled with transformational experiences; one specifically would be the transition of moving to a new school over Zoom. This was extremely difficult for me, but also gave me the tools to be more outgoing and listen more.

Community Impact Project: During my Senior year, I spent a few hours on Sundays volunteering at Children’s Hospital Colorado. This experience was beyond rewarding and interesting. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy volunteering as much as I did. Every time I volunteered I experienced something different. My hours were spent playing with siblings of sick kids, doing office work, and encouraging other volunteers. This experience has been and continues to be an amazing opportunity to learn and make a difference.

Favorite CA Tradition: Interim is by far my favorite CA tradition. Last year I participated in Theaterpalooza because I was still recovering from a knee surgery. And although I had never participated in any theater or musical productions, I had a really fun time. And Senior year for Interim, I was able to go to the Island School in the Bahamas.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: One thing that has made me the happiest at CA has been the friends and relationships I have made. CA is special in the way that it brings people from all over Denver together.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: My Senior year I decided to join the Swim Team. I never thought I would ever participate on this team, but I am so happy I did.

Immediate Plans: University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo., to study Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Jack Penston Doolittle

At CA Since: First Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: At CA I have undergone many transformational experiences, but I would say the most influential moment I’ve had was taking World War I with Mr. Thomas. I struggled in his class, but really enjoyed learning from him. His class held me accountable, and, I feel, made me more mature. He also taught me to take control of my time and keep my schedule organized— skills that I will use for the rest of my life.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered for the CA Used Book Sale, helping Ms. Plant and the Parent Association chairs manage the leftover books. I assisted in boxing them up and hauling them to a truck so they could be donated to other organizations.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is when Seniors welcome the Freshmen into the Upper School. Ever since I experienced this as a Ninth Grader, I have looked forward to participating as a Senior.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: My friends and grade have made me happiest at CA. The Class of 2023 became very close, as it is small, and we have grown to be one big friend group. I also love my closely knit friend group, as I’ve known them all since First Grade.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have surprised myself managing the college application process at CA. It was a lot of work, and I was struggling at first, but it really drove me to get organized and balance my school and college application work.

Liana Sarise Fagelson

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Last year, I was the captain of the Varsity 2 Girls Tennis Team. Our team was a mix of each Upper School grade, and I was the only Junior. With two amazing coaches and so much time spent together, we became a little family. It was so fun to have friends I felt close with across the Upper School. What really stuck with me was Coach Hallowell saying she had never seen a team as close as ours, and how much more fun it made it to work with us.

Community Impact Project: For my Community Impact Project, I spent two mornings a week for the past two summers working with the Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation’s summer school programs. In this volunteer work, I acted as a tutor and teacher’s assistant for children. I worked with the students on STEM projects, coding, learning how to start a business, and many other hands-on projects.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The friends I have made throughout my four years at CA have absolutely made me the happiest. I feel fortunate to have made friends with so many people in our grade and am grateful to have connected with classmates through sports, classes, clubs, and more. I especially believe the REDI Lab helped me make many of these unexpected connections.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have surprised myself by uncovering a love for studio art. Though I have painted and drawn for many years, I never thought I would end up doing it for Portfolio during my Senior year. I have discovered my style is in no way intricate or cohesive. It is messy and abstract, which sets it apart from other artists in my Portfolio class. I’ve learned it’s important to differentiate yourself and explore art that is interesting to you, rather than what you think others want to see.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be living in NYC and working at a job I love or starting my own company.

Immediate Plans: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich., to study Business, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship.

Community Impact Project: I founded the CA chapter of the National Honor Society of Dance Arts Club. This club was started to help broaden the horizons of our dance program at CA. We ran a dance clothing drive for HOPE and we worked with Horizons and Lower School students to give them an introduction to dance that they may have not received before.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA traditions are all of the pre- and post-show theater traditions.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The thing that has made me happiest at CA is our Theater and Art programs. As a person who surrounded myself in art my whole life, being able to grow in these wonderful programs has made me feel so incredibly happy. I know the people I’ve met will be my friends for a lifetime!

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have surprised myself by how much confidence I have been able to have in myself in my Senior year. I used to undermine myself and cut myself down a lot, but this year I really have been able to recognize what qualities I bring the community and how my hard work is paying off.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: The number one piece of advice I would give to the incoming Ninth Graders is stay true to your values. Although you might feel a certain pressure to fit into a mold, don’t let that stop you from sticking to your values and your passions. The transition from middle school to high school can be really tough, because you’re figuring out who you are and who you want to be. It’s important to recognize that that’s totally okay, but stay true to yourself.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to be kick ball changing, chaine turning, and singing my heart out on the stages of theaters across the country!

Immediate Plans: University of Denver, Denver, Colo., to study Musical Theater/Drama.

Noah Matthew Hicks

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: One powerful experience was during Upper School Service Day in Ninth Grade where we volunteered at a nonprofit organization that helped immigrants get on their feet and provided them with a place to stay as soon as they got to Colorado.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered at the Jewish Family Services Food Pantry, where I helped people facing food insecurity. I worked a number of different jobs in the food pantry— from helping people shop to sorting food.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the Kent Denver-CA rivalry in most sports every year.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Friendships built through sports at CA have made me the happiest.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have become good friends with people that I may not have ever expected to be friends with.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Put yourself out there and play as many sports as possible— whether you are good at them or not. It is always fun to meet new people and try something new.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to have a lot of close friends and a successful business career.

Immediate Plans: Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., to study Business.

Sophie Claire Hunnewell

At CA Since: Eleventh Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: One experience at CA that has been powerful is being a CLT member. I have thoroughly enjoyed this past year helping Ninth Graders through their first year at CA. This experience showed me how much I had grown through high school and how much I learned about myself.

Community Impact Project: For my Community Impact Project, I volunteered at the Food Bank of the Rockies. I helped load cars, vans, and trucks with food provided by the food bank. Through this project, I formed connections with organization leaders and the community.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Interim. The experiences I’ve had on CA’s Interim trips have been overall my favorite part of the year. To be able to go on trips like these I was able to form strong connections with my peers and my teachers while also challenging myself. Last year’s trip to Desolation Canyon was a trip I will never forget. Experiences like not being able to shower but rather swim through the Green River, doing backflips off our rafts, and staring at the unbelievable stars are my favorite memories.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The friendships I have formed over the last two years have made me the happiest. Through Field Hockey, Soccer, class, advisory, and so much more, I have made lifelong friendships.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I think what has surprised me the most is how much I have grown over the past two years—as a friend, a student, a sibling, and an athlete.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Go with the flow. I think the best way to go through high school is to accept that you aren’t in control of everything.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to be either sailing across the world on a sailboat or traveling from country to country.

Immediate Plans: University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo.

Kaitlin Grace Johnson

At CA Since: Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: As a Ninth Grader during the first few months of the pandemic, I asked Mr. Gallop, the teacher of an innovations/art class I was taking, for extra homework one day. He ended up teaching me a whole separate curriculum about coding, and I found a completely new passion. I ended up creating a project that tracked COVID-19 data in an animated simulation. It uncovered a love of programming that I intend to follow in college and beyond.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered as an assistant horse trainer at an equine assisted-therapy facility in Evergreen called Grace Mountain Ranch. I helped ensure the horses were a good fit for clients who might not have as much horse experience and ensured a positive interaction for both the clients and the horses.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA traditions are the beginning- and end-of-year assemblies where the Seniors’ names are read. I have watched all the Seniors stand as their names are called for 13 years. I’ve looked up to them as the wisest people on campus, envied how much fun they were having, and always felt a sense of sadness at the end of the year when I knew I wouldn’t see most of them again.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: From Lower School lacrosse, Middle School history buff conversations, hanging out in the computer lab during club time, cheering on friends in the weight room, and hilarious sessions of advisory, I’ve managed to find a new interest almost every year where I find friends and joy. Just this year, I started running Cross Country and had the absolute best time with my teammates.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Get your homework done early! I love to get assignments done quickly after I receive them, so the material is fresh in my mind. Teachers love to see this kind of ownership of your work and will bring you personalized support and encouragement.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be a veterinarian in an equine clinic, spending most of the day outside working with the animals I love and combining my passions for an interdisciplinary approach to their care.

Immediate Plans: Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colo., to study Equine Science and Computer Science on a Pre-Vet Track.

Charles “Charlie” Trent Zachar Jones

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: In Ninth Grade, I did a weeklong Intensive on immigration in El Paso, Texas. The trip definitely influenced how I view the world and how I view myself. I still remember our conversations with refugees and our interactions with border patrol officers. It was eye-opening to see families with children arriving at the border with nothing except the clothes they were wearing.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered as a Winter Park Junior Ski Patroller. This season I spent my time training new patrollers as well as helping injured guests, opening and closing runs, and making sure the mountain ran smoothly. Skiing has been a huge part of my life in Colorado, and this has been a great way for me to give back to a community that has given me so much.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition has got to be HOPE, an event where I get to see the whole community come together to support families outside of our school. I love watching class after class come and help sort clothes, diapers, and gifts during their free time.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I made a lot of mistakes. I did not expect to fail so many times and still have the entire community support me every day.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I would tell Ninth Graders to find a passion and pursue it. The most interesting people I know love what they do and work hard at it. It is not always easy to keep loving what you do, but if you stick with it, your passion will grow.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I would either like to be in medical school or in the middle of starting up my own business.

Immediate Plans: Duke University, Durham, N.C., to study Biomedical Engineering.

Anna Elisabeth Jordaan

At CA Since: Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I watched my advisory come together as a close-knit group by Senior year after being a group of strangers on Freshman orientation day.

Community Impact Project: I worked with a foster care organization called Raise the Future to fundraise stuffed animals for children in the foster care system.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the Senior-Kindergarten Buddy program. Having been on both ends of the relationship, I can definitely say it is equally as special for the Seniors as it is the Kindergartners.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: My friends and teachers!

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have taken interest in many different subjects and classes that are outside of my comfort zone, especially the history and English electives.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Push yourself academically and take time making friends.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to be working in a field I truly enjoy and staying active in my free time.

Immediate Plans: United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., to study Engineering.

Matthew Gittings Kintzele

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: A powerful moment for me at CA is when we all went online for COVID-19. This was a very tough time for the teachers. However, I watched as they did their best to change the curriculum for Zoom, and this inspired me to try my best on Zoom school as well.

Community Impact Project: My CIP is working with Cafe 180. Cafe 180 is a nonprofit restaurant that allows the customer to choose the price of their meal, often providing free meals to the local underserved community.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Faculty Follies. I always loved the fun skits the teachers would put on right before Winter Break. It was something to look forward to when school dragged before break.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The connections I’ve made with my teachers at CA have made me happiest. Before CA, I never was able to have conversations not related to my class. However, when Mr. Holland walked up to me to comment on the episode of South Park I was watching, or when Dr. Huntington told me about his freezing cold run, I felt like I could talk to a teacher about anything.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: There have been many moments where I have a large paper or a big test coming up and I didn’t think I could do it. I have consistently surprised myself by working hard and getting the work I need to do done.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Do it all, you can only go through high school once, so do everything you can.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be skiing.

Immediate Plans: University of Oregon, Eugene, Ore.

Toren Michael Knepper

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: A powerful experience I’ve had at CA was being a part of the C-Red Basketball Team my Freshman year. The team consisted of three Seniors who acted as leaders while still remaining our friends. The team was always in high spirits and worked hard every practice—finishing the season with a 13-2 record.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered as a Junior Ski Patroller at Copper Mountain and helped patrol the slopes with the full-time volunteers. I took classes to become OEC and CPR certified. It was a great experience helping people in need on the slopes while doing something I love—to ski!

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the first day of school. I was very nervous on the first day of school as a Ninth Grader, so it was great to be able to cheer for and support the Freshmen this year.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The ability to see good friends between classes made me the happiest at CA. My friends always allowed me to relax and decompress throughout tough school days.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have surprised myself by finding more joy in classes as I’ve gotten older. CA offers many classes and electives that Seniors can choose from. With the ability to choose the classes that interest me, I have been surprised by my work.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I would advise the incoming Ninth Graders to join the clubs, classes, and groups they enjoy and find happiness in.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade:

In a decade, I hope to have a career I genuinely enjoy.

Immediate Plans: University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo., to study Business.

George “Andrew” Coleman Koclanes

At CA Since: Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience:

I will always remember the relationships I developed with the teachers at CA. They were not only available to answer questions, but worked with me if I was struggling, explored with me an area of interest, or simply chatted with me about sports, an event in the news, or life in general. They supported my curiosity and creativity in ways that helped me to grow as a student and as a person.

Community Impact Project: I served as the Co-President of HOPE. HOPE is a special, annual, student-run event at CA where we bring hundreds of people to campus to receive food, clothing, medical services, and holiday gifts. This year, we added an educational component to HOPE—providing children’s games and activities centered around science and the arts.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: During the years I have been at CA, I have been surprised by all of the new experiences I have tried where, at first, I was unsure, but then discovered it was something I really enjoyed. Theater comes to mind as a great example of this. When I first found myself in a Middle School theater class and play, I had no idea how much I would enjoy studying a script and performing on stage. But, I found a real love for theater and the wonderful theater community at CA.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be living in a big city, collaborating with others to solve some of the world’s biggest problems.

Immediate Plans: California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif., to study Biochemistry, Economics, and Computer Science.

Andrew Cassidy Kurtz

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: REDI Lab was the most powerful experience because of the freedom over my own learning and how close we grew as a cohort. My project was learning JavaScript to automate my personalized stationery business, A Designs. It was so freeing to work on a passion project and take control of my own learning. We also had the opportunity to go on a REDI Lab Interim to Cheley Colorado Camps, which was lots of fun and brought our group even closer.

Community Impact Project: I worked with Craig Hospital to design and print a custom birthday card to send to 200 of their volunteers. Craig is a local hospital that specializes in neurorehabilitation after spinal cord or brain injuries. Their mission has special significance to me because I suffered from a severe concussion that required treatment from a similar program.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Senior-Kindergarten Buddies (shoutout to Jamie!). It is so cute how much they look up to you, and it is cool to have the opportunity to make memories they will cherish forever.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The opportunity to take so many fascinating electives on subjects that I am passionate about has made me happiest. I have taken Ceramics a few times, in which I have loved working on the wheel and incorporating 3D printing with mold making to make a geometric pot. I have also loved the Computer Science electives. Robotics in Ninth Grade led to a passion for electrical engineering, and AI and Machine Learning this year has been one of the hardest, but most interesting, classes I have taken.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Going into Help Time is a sign of strength, not weakness! Your teachers are literally sitting around waiting to help you, so use it!

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be running a technology startup (or unicorn), perhaps harnessing AI ethically or improving technology around desensitization.

Immediate Plans: Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, Needham, Mass., to study Electrical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science and Entrepreneurship.

Jane Simmons Lauchli

At CA Since: First Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Participating in Mock Trial since Ninth Grade has not only made me a better debater and public speaker, but it also gave me the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of law from real attorneys.

Community Impact Project: I continued my work organizing fundraisers for The Colorado Foundation—a nonprofit organization that my mom and I founded together in 2019 designed to facilitate youth-led philanthropy.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Interim. Last year, I went on Mr. Mills’s fly fishing trip, and I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun. It was also an amazing opportunity to make friends with people that I didn’t get a chance to meet otherwise.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: My friends. Having been at CA for 12 years now, I’ve had the opportunity to maintain lifelong friendships and create new ones; I am so grateful for every person I’ve met here.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I’ve pushed myself really hard on classes that didn’t come naturally to me, which is something that I had to work on through high school.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I would advise incoming Ninth Graders to be open-minded. Many of my favorite extracurricular activities and experiences I take part in now I never would have imagined myself doing as a Freshman.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be working in a fast-paced, politics-adjacent job.

Immediate Plans: Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.

Ann “Annie” Katharine LeClair

At CA Since: Sixth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: A powerful experience for me at CA is my work with Haiti Club. As a Middle Schooler I participated in the many events they put on and as a Ninth Grader I joined the club. Now as a Senior, I am Co-President of the club, and last year we raised more than $60,000 at a dinner gala. It has been a very moving experience to become knowledgeable about Haiti’s issues and the importance of our help.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered at the Veterans Hospital this past summer as a nurse’s assistant in the Emergency Room. I also had the opportunity to work alongside the nurses in the suicide wing, learning about mental health and psychology.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The Basketball community has definitely made me the happiest at CA. I’ve never had a more welcoming coaching staff than the one I do in this environment. I’ve met some of my best friends on this team and can confidently say I have a very close relationship with each of my coaches. I could talk all day about how each one of them has made a positive impact on my life.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I’ve surprised myself by the different friendships and groups that I’ve connected with throughout high school.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Grades matter even as a Ninth Grader. Work hard and it will pay off.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be happy in whatever career I choose and surrounded by people I love wholeheartedly. I want to live somewhere warm and a place that offers many adventures.

Immediate Plans:

University of South Carolina, Columbia, S.C.

Riley Layne Leversedge

At CA Since: Tenth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: A powerful and transformational experience for me was winning the Girls Lacrosse State Championship Junior year. Sophomore year I had the opportunity of playing on the team, but I was not a starter. Junior year, however, I was. That year I was able to fully contribute to our team’s success through hard work and dedication and will forever remember winning the state title while playing my heart out on the field.

Community Impact Project: I worked at four organizations. Three of the four were soup kitchens, where we spent the morning packaging groceries and the afternoon distributing them to underserved communities. In the fourth, we buddied up with a child with disabilities and spent time just hanging out with them.

Favorite CA Tradition: I would say my favorite CA tradition is the SeniorKindergarten Buddy program. I came to CA as a Sophomore in high school, so I never had an opportunity to connect with the whole CA community. This tradition, however, has helped connect me with the Lower School.

What Made Me Happiest at CA:

Being a part of CA’s Field Hockey and Lacrosse Teams has made me the happiest.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: The advice I would give to incoming Freshmen is that nothing is given at CA—it’s a level up. If you want to succeed, you will have to work hard. But by the end, it won’t feel like you have to, rather that you want to.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to be out of college and graduate school, working either as a physical trainer for a team or as a personal trainer and nutritionist.

Immediate Plans: Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., to study Athletic Training in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Charles “Charlie” Joseph Link

At CA Since: Seventh Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: A powerful experience I had at CA was the Eighth Grade backpacking trip. We went into Rocky Mountain National Park, and spent a few days camping and hiking. We had a really fun time, and I learned so much about the backcountry.

Community Impact Project: My Community Impact Project took part on Mount Elbert. My cousins and I joined with Colorado ’14ers Initiative to do trail work on the main trail of Mount Massive. We camped up on the mountain, which not many people get to do, so it was a really cool experience.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Interim. Every year, we get to do a different trip or experience during the last week of school.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: I like the freedom I have to choose my classes and schedule.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: In Middle School, I really didn’t like science, but now it is one of my favorite subjects.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Savor your time in high school because it goes by quickly.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: Working hard to retire early and follow any dreams or passions I have.

Immediate Plans: University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Joseph “Joe” Michael MacDougall

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: In the REDI Lab, I was able to deepen a passion of mine—ethical computing. That experience has since led to many opportunities, and I have continued to engage in this passion area through academic research and independent projects.

Community Impact Project: The past four years, I have worked with a nonprofit food recovery organization called We Don’t Waste. For my CIP, I created an awareness campaign that educated people on food waste as well as promoted volunteer opportunities during a critical time when there was a rapid rise in recipients at our food distribution events.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Ninth Grade Orientation day. Experiencing it for a second time as a CLT member was a fantastic full-circle moment and showed me how all the Freshman anxiety and awkwardness blossoms into a flourishing class dynamic.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have surprised myself with my passion for trying new things. Some that are now so core to me—computer science, guitar, and rock climbing—were discovered in just the past few years. This personal insight has inspired me to always keep my options open and to delve into new opportunities whenever possible.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be in a new country. Over a celebratory farewell brunch with my Computer Science class, our teacher, Ms. Jans, shared her thoughts on the beauty of travel. I have internalized her advice and hope to spend a great portion of my life outside of the U.S.

Immediate Plans: University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa., to study STEM in some capacity.

Catherine “Cate” Noelle Maloy

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I was fortunate enough to be put in the Concert Choir class in the third trimester of my Sophomore year. I was skeptical at first, but 10 minutes into the class I knew I would enjoy choir. Along the way, I have made lasting connections with the other choir members.

Community Impact Project:

I worked at three different nonprofit organizations, two of which were food banks where I sorted food and then delivered food boxes to people in need. The third organization allowed me to buddy up with a child with disabilities. I spent time simply hanging out with them and getting to know them.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition is the All-School Assembly on the first day of school. Growing up, I always looked forward to watching all the Seniors get their names called and do their class chant. After 13 years of watching, I was finally able to participate! It was a perfect way to wrap up my years at CA.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I never would have thought that I would become so interested in science. Over the course of my Senior year, I have taken Physiology, Zoology, Climate Change, Sports Science, and Genetics. I have learned so much, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: It is okay to have your friendships change; don’t expect to leave high school with the same friend group you entered with. Surround yourself with people who raise you up rather than bring you down.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be doing what makes me happy, whether that is traveling to experience new cultures and places or being a psychologist and helping others. Immediate Plans: University of Mississippi, Oxford, Miss., to study Psychology.

Olivia Jade Marx

At CA Since: Ninth Grade Powerful/ Transformational Experience: During Volleyball this fall, I got injured to the point where I was unable to play the rest of my Senior season. This forced me to spend much of the trimester in the Sports Medicine room doing rehab and physical therapy. At first I was crushed, but over time, I grew to love the Sports Medicine room and I became close with the athletic trainers. Now, I’m an athletic training assistant. Even though getting hurt was awful, it helped me discover a new passion that I otherwise never would have.

Community Impact Project: For my Community Impact Project, Legacy in Print, I wrote a memoir (recounting stories, memories, etc.) for a patient that I worked closely with in hospice care. I plan on gifting this memoir to the family of the patient after they pass.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I’m really surprised how my interests have changed and developed during my time at CA. When I first entered high school, I thought I was going to pursue a science major in college, but I ended up falling in love with English.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Have an open mind! So much changes throughout high school. You will meet new people, discover new passions, and make some of your closest friends in the communities you least expect.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be a writer/editor for a major news corporation.

Immediate Plans: Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., to study Journalism and English.

Harris May

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: REDI Lab taught me to think in new ways, view things from different perspectives, and how to be comfortable with not knowing the answer right away. I was also able to pursue two of my passions, rock climbing and poetry. I already knew I loved to write, and well, rock climbing is my favorite thing in the world. By combining the two, I danced with the rock, in the present and on paper, if but for a moment.

Community Impact Project: I am an intern for the Rose Youth Foundation. RYF is a nonprofit that teaches Jewish teens the foundations of philanthropy and how to harness the power of a nonprofit to do good. I was a part of the grantmaking team last year, and I loved it so much that I wanted to come back to help others learn how to make a difference in our community!

What Made Me Happiest at CA:

I loved seeing the Climbing Team grow and flourish. I’ve been a leader on the wall since Ninth Grade, and the team is now easily twice the size it was back in 2019. Seeing so many of my classmates so psyched to get on the wall and helping each other succeed, in and out of the gym, has been like watching a child grow up.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Join the Climbing Team! It’s a ton of fun, you can get really strong, and everyone is super chill. There’s no other sport that’s as accepting and welcoming, so even if you’re a beginner, I highly recommend it! Plus, I could never oversell how much fun it is.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be either in a lab with some biochemical or nuclear revelation in my hands, or out in the wilderness with my climbing gear on my back and the wind in my hair.

Immediate Plans: Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., to study Biochemistry and Biology.

Colin Patrick McCoy

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: A powerful experience I had at CA was taking a trip to El Paso during my Freshman year. We got to see how part of immigration works in our country without much intervention, which made it very impactful. The trip was also right before COVID-19 started, so it sticks in my memory as important because of the friendships it helped me form before we couldn’t see each other at school anymore.

Community Impact Project: I became a core volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. I spent my time building and renovating houses to either provide affordable housing options or make current senior citizens’ houses livable as they grow older, allowing them to stay in the house they know and love.

Favorite CA Tradition: Being greeted by all the Seniors on the first day of high school was super fun, and I looked forward to getting to do that as a Senior—and it did not disappoint. It was great to see all of the Ninth Graders get excited for their new chapter of life.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The friends and connections to people I have made while at CA have definitely made me the happiest. CA has been a very close community that has made it easy to make friends that I know I can count on.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Try new things. Go out for a couple sports, sign up for clubs, try a new art, sign up for one of the Global Travel trips CA offers. You’ll have a great time doing them, and you might even find something you really like, but most importantly, you’ll meet some great people that you will be able to call your friends for the next four years and beyond.

Immediate Plans: University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tenn., to study Construction Management.

Katherine “Kate” May McKean

At CA Since: Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: The most powerful experience I’ve had at CA has been with the Girls Swim Team. I started as a Freshman, scared to be swimming with people four years older than me, and I ended as a Captain, making some of the most impactful connections of my life. Coach Beckie Mutz fostered such an incredible environment within the Swim Team that I think made it transformational for everyone on the team.

Community Impact Project: I was a curriculum coordinator and a summer camp leader for Red Rocks Church Kids Department. I led a group of six- and seven-year-olds for a week of camp over the summer, as well as helped prepare supplies and activities for kids to do in church on Sundays.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is SeniorKindergarten Buddies because I got to experience them from both sides. I still have a hat my Senior Buddies gave me from our zoo trip my Kindergarten year.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Going to the State Championship for swimming with some of my best friends made me the happiest.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I can read now! I couldn’t when I got here in Kindergarten!

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Be open to new ideas and opinions and try new things! Join as many clubs and sports as you can. I joined both the musical, Mamma Mia!, and Ultimate Frisbee my Senior year. I was really bad at both, but I had a great time, and wish I had just been willing to jump into things that I’m not good at earlier. They’re great learning experiences!

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be living in a house big enough so that my sister Maddie can live in the basement.

Immediate Plans: Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas.

Teodor “Teddy” Kenneth McPeek

At CA Since: Sixth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Having the opportunity to learn about immigration law during the Ninth Grade Intensive week was something I found really impactful and informative. Speaking with a refugee who was currently going through the process of obtaining documentation and getting the chance to watch court cases in person was like nothing I had ever done before. Out of the many programs CA offers in its curriculum, this one was by far the best experience and learning opportunity.

Community Impact Project: Last summer, I volunteered as a soccer coach for Soccer Without Borders, a national organization dedicated to helping underserved youth by using the game of soccer as a tool for education. During the monthlong camp, I worked with many refugees and immigrants, helping to create a community for kids—some who only arrived in the United States months prior.

Favorite CA Tradition: Interim has always been a special experience at CA. From my first Interim in Sixth Grade where I earned my scuba diving license to my Junior trip rafting in Utah, that week is something every CA student looks forward to.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Having been a part of the Soccer program for all seven years that I have been at CA, it is not hard to associate the sport with some of my happiest moments. The community and experiences that I’ve shared with my teammates have helped mold not only how I am as an athlete, but also how I am as a person and contributor to the greater communities that I belong to. Winning our second state title in four years was the perfect end to my soccer career.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: It is hard to pinpoint just a few ways in which I have surprised myself at CA, as so many of my experiences have helped contribute to how I’ve changed over the years. An activity I never saw myself taking on before coming to CA was Basketball, which is something I began in Seventh Grade and have enjoyed being a part of throughout my time here.

Immediate Plans: New York University, New York, N.Y.

Aaron Turner McPheeters

At CA Since: Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: My most powerful experience at CA was a calculus class during my Junior year. My teacher helped me embrace the process of learning, and I applied that to my other classes.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered at MetroCaring, which aims to solve food insecurity in the Denver area. Much of my time was spent in the warehouse sorting food, but I also worked in the community garden.

Favorite CA Tradition: I have loved having a Kindergarten Buddy—it is a great tradition that brings the CA community together. I was in my Buddy’s exact position 13 years ago and finally having a Buddy of my own gave me an opportunity to be a role model.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: I always looked forward to hanging out with my friends in the lounge, whether that’s during a passing period or a free block. I’ve gotten to know a lot of people well, just by making conversation.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: At CA, the variety of classes let me explore different topics that I wouldn’t have been ordinarily exposed to. I have new interests and passions that I never would have expected.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Finding a balance between a social life and academics makes your time in high school so much more fulfilling. Try to enjoy yourself over the next four years because it really does go by quickly.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to be working abroad where I can experience new cultures and meet new people.

Immediate Plans: University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va., to study Finance.

Sofia Rose Meltzer

At CA Since: Eleventh Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: In the fall of my Senior year, I had the opportunity to fly to Oklahoma and be able to meet and speak with acclaimed Senegalese author Boubacar Boris Diop. For three days at the Neustadt Lit Festival, my classmates and I were absorbed in the literature, art, and history that thrives in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Upon getting to meet Mr. Diop, he opened our eyes to the tragedies of Rwanda and how the simplicity of literature can help educate the next generation so history won’t repeat itself. This trip is something that I would’ve never had the chance to experience anywhere else and thanks to Dr. Vogels and Ms. Wolf-Tinsman, it was something I will never forget!

Community Impact Project: I volunteered with Horizons Colorado during the summer and tutored Horizons students at Knapp Elementary.

Favorite CA Tradition: Interim!

In my Interim last year, I got to carve marble for a week in the Rockies. It was an incredible experience and an opportunity that I would only get at CA.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Getting to see my friends every day!

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: Surviving the Swim season not once, but twice.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Stop standing in the middle of the hallway.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be living someplace cool.

Immediate Plans: Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Ore., to study Psychology.

Mattiline “Mattie” Elizabeth Mielke

Powerful/Transformational Experience: A powerful experience for me has been being part of the CA Girls Soccer Team. I love getting to know people from all different grades and building new friendships. This team has also helped me embrace being a leader.

Community Impact Project: I wrote digital letters to the kids who are currently patients at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Recovering from an injury myself, this project meant a lot because I was able to brighten someone’s day just like people have been brightening mine.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is SeniorKindergarten Buddies. I remember my Buddies from when I was in Kindergarten and have been so excited to finally be on the flip side.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The friendships and connections I’ve made are what makes me happiest. Because I’ve been here since Kindergarten, I have friendships that have lasted fiveplus years and relationships with teachers from Lower and Middle School.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have surprised myself with how hard I work for things I care about. I’ve challenged myself by taking difficult classes and filling up my schedule, and my work ethic has really evolved throughout my high school experience.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: My advice is to not confine yourself to one thing or subject. Branching out is important to your experience and also in figuring out what you want to do in college/future.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be somewhere in the science and research world. Also, I’d like to still be involved in soccer, even if I’m not playing—for example coaching or teaching.

Immediate Plans: Denison University, Granville, Ohio, to study Biology or Chemistry.

Claire Catherine Millisor

At CA Since: Sixth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Interim is a week that is memorable no matter what trip you do, but last year I was on the Desolation Canyon white water rafting trip in Utah. It was one of the best weeks of my life. I became closer with both the faculty leaders and my fellow students. I stepped out of my comfort zone and was able to re-ignite my love of adventure and the outdoors.

Community Impact Project: My CIP was a fun run put on by the Haiti Club. I have been the president of Haiti Club for the past two years and wanted to spread awareness and raise money through this event.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: I have found lifelong friends during my time at CA. No matter where we all end up at college, I know we will always be great friends. They have truly made my time at CA unforgettable.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: If you would have told me when I started at CA that I would be doing a Studio Art Portfolio Show, I would have not believed you. I loved art but did not have much skill, until I joined the art program at CA. It has transformed me as an artist and also has opened my eyes to a whole new world of opportunities.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Try to take the time to gain perspective when you are in a situation that seems impossible to handle. I promise it gets better—the sun always comes back out!

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope that I am happy and living near a beach. I also hope that I live right across the street from my mom and that my friends aren’t too far away.

Immediate Plans: University of Miami, Miami, Fla., to study Public Relations.

Spencer Hugh Mills

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Spending time with Eudras Ceus, CA’s partner in Haiti, was a powerful experience. When he visited Colorado, he spent time with my family and the students at CA, teaching us all about Haiti. While he was here, it snowed a foot, and we took him sledding. It was so much fun.

Community Impact Project: Running with Ryan— I run weekly with a blind man, serving as his guide. Since I love to run, this has been a great experience, especially learning about Ryan and his life. The Colorado Center for the Blind helped me facilitate this project.

Favorite CA Tradition: I’ve loved the Lower School Halloween Parade. I remember how fun it was to dress up and walk around the school. I always looked forward to getting candy from the Upper Schoolers. Now that I am in the Upper School, it’s fun to see them walk by me hoping for candy. Their faces have that same glow of pure excitement mixed with terror that I once displayed.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: My advisory! The Wei-gang is the best advisory by far! I know I will be friends with them for a long time.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I thought the college process would be worse! It was actually fun for me to think about where I might end up spending the next four years. I was lucky to be able to visit many campuses, and I now wear college merchandise almost all the time.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Focus your energy on high school, not college. You only get to be in high school once.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: Living in a van down by the river. Immediate Plans: Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine.

John “Buzz” Buckingham Oertel

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Community Impact Project: Mustangs Youth Lacrosse Coaching—I coached Sixth Graders in the basics of lacrosse during practice and game times. It was fulfilling to share my passion and knowledge of lacrosse with younger players.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the Lower School Halloween Parade. In Lower School it was something I always looked forward to participating in and then in Grades 6-12, it was special to watch the younger kids parade through the school every year.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The strong friendships and lifelong bonds that I’ve made in my time at CA have made me the happiest. CA has been my second home the last 14 years and a place where I’m comfortable and myself, surrounded by people whom I care about and who care about me.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I surprised myself Freshman year by changing my position in Lacrosse from attack to goalie. This was a huge risk that was exciting and scary at the time, but I have grown and gained confidence in myself and my skills over the last four years thanks to the support of my coaches and teammates.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Take risks and try new things in Upper School. No matter how scary it may seem—you never know what amazing things will come of those risks.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In 10 years, I hope to be happy in a profession that I am fulfilled by and passionate about.

Immediate Plans: University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo.

Campbell Elizabeth O’Neal

At CA Since: Ninth Grade (but I also attended in First Grade)

Powerful/Transformational Experience: The Ninth Grade immigration Intensive was a really powerful experience because it allowed me to see the inner workings of an immigration court and how that can affect people and families. I really appreciated the opportunity to learn from people’s first-hand accounts to better understand and appreciate their experiences, and how they differ from my own.

Community Impact Project: My project is volunteering for St. Elizabeth’s Church sandwich and soup line. Giving someone a hot meal, especially in the winter, makes a direct impact on their lives and hopefully makes their day a little better.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Finding my place, whether it be in clubs, on the Ultimate Frisbee Team, or in classes, has made me happiest.

Advice For Incoming CA

Ninth Graders: Join the Ultimate Frisbee Team! Join clubs that you think will make you happy, or even ones that intrigue you; you don’t have to stick with them for all of high school, but it’s a great way to meet new people.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: Hopefully, I’m surrounded by kind, thoughtful people and am doing a job that I love.

Immediate Plans: University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo.

Xianhao Ou

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I think the Junior Writing Seminar—a mandatory class at CA—was the most powerful experience for me. During that class, I could always sit down and write my thoughts out. Everyone is always moving so fast these days that there is never a time when we could just sit down and reminisce about our past and the good ol’ days.

Community Impact Project: I worked with the Horizons Club to host a book drive. Once a month, Horizons organizes an event called Super Saturday, which brings in kids to play various games and just have fun. I collected tons of books up to that point—children’s books, chapter books, and puzzle books. During that Saturday, I handed out books, two or three per person, to all kids in grades 1-5.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA:

I’ve been surprised by just how well I can adapt in a new environment. I came from a vastly different school compared to CA, and everything here was just so new that I was nervous the first few weeks I was here. But it didn’t take long before I found my place at school.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Nobody here will look down on you just because you asked a question you think is dumb—probably a lot of other people have the same question. There are tons of resources available at CA to fit your every need. The teachers here are always available to help you.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade:

I hope I can complete my medical degree and start saving lives in the medical field, one person at a time.

Immediate Plans: University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa., to study Nursing.

Hudson Chain Parks

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Losing five straight semi-finals/finals games from my Junior to Senior year was the most transformational experience I had throughout my high school career. After going undefeated and winning State in Tennis my Sophomore year, I thought that I was unstoppable. I believed that winning was guaranteed to happen, and I wouldn’t have to earn each victory. I was quickly proved wrong, as I lost in the State semi-finals in Tennis my Junior year. This was followed by a State finals loss in both the CPHL Hockey season and official CHSAA Hockey season just months later. To begin my Senior year, I lost in the State semis in Tennis and the CPHL finals once again and was forced to come to the realization that nothing would ever be guaranteed, and I need to earn everything I get.

Community Impact Project: My friend Davis Frankum and I volunteered for a program called Miracles On Ice. Miracles On Ice is a program that introduces the sport of ice hockey to children in our community. The goal of this program is to teach the importance of resilience and perseverance as they try to learn to play the wonderful sport of ice hockey.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Enjoy it. Though four years seems like a long time, it goes by quicker than you could ever imagine, so make sure to enjoy it while it lasts.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be successful in whatever business endeavor I choose to take part in. I also want to ensure that I give myself time to spend time with my family and friends.

Immediate Plans: Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., to study Business.

Lila Gillian Paton

At CA Since: Fourth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Powerful experiences I have had at CA are the relationships I have built with each of my advisory classmates. I have enduring life lessons from all of them, which have strengthened my respect for each individual. Never did I think that I would care for them as much as I do now. #WeiGang4Ever

Community Impact Project: For my Community Impact Project, I partnered with Raise the Future, a foundation serving youth in foster care, to reduce the amount of time they live without a permanent family. My partner, Anna Jordaan, and I held a Teddy Bear Drive at CA to collect items we could give to youth still in the foster care system, to provide them a bit more comfort.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition at CA is the Senior speeches because I often walk out of Town Hall positively reflecting on the words the Senior shared. I am also appreciative of the vulnerability that every Senior displays while delivering their speech.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The friendships I have built and the overall community in my grade have shined a positive light during my time at CA. I will forever be grateful for all the wonderful people I have met here, including both students and teachers.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: Looking back, I would never have expected myself to hold the values and appreciation for certain things dear to my heart as I do now. I have had the privilege of self-discovery and character development throughout my CA journey, which has impacted my approach to the way I lead my life.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Work hard and make academic goals for yourself, as it is just as important to receive good grades as a Freshman as it is any other year in high school.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to have a successful career— although I do not yet know in what—and a stable life somewhere on the East Coast.

Immediate Plans: Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y.

Arantza Carolina Pereira

At CA Since: Third Grade

What Made Me Happiest at CA: I’m grateful to know that CA has provided me with the opportunity to pursue my curiosities and personalize my learning in ways that may not have been possible elsewhere. In this way, it makes me happy to be a part of a community that celebrates each other’s successes.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I surprised myself academically by branching out into unfamiliar and uncomfortable areas. I found myself to be interested in things that I had never expected to enjoy.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Take a few classes in subjects that you don’t particularly like. You’ll be surprised at how often a class or teacher might change your mind.

Immediate Plans: University of Richmond, Richmond, Va., to study Political Science, Marketing, and Economics

Grayson “Gray” Stamper Perkins

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience:

In my Sophomore year, my friend and I decided to start playing Baseball. I was playing with people who had been playing their whole life. I wasn’t very good at it, but I learned that I don’t need to be great at something to have fun doing it. I also learned how to have fun doing something while also working hard to get better.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered with Homes of Hope. Homes of Hope is an organization that builds houses in multiple countries around the world. I traveled to Tijuana, Mexico, to help provide a family with a good home, electricity, and a comfortable place to sleep.

I surprised myself by really stepping into the role, and I am proud of how I was able to speak out and lead the rest of the team.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: You won’t be able to make everyone like you, so just be yourself and become friends with people that want to be around the real you.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I want to be working as a civil engineer and living in Denver.

Immediate Plans: Furman University, Greenville, S.C.

Katherine Anne Pulido

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Community Impact Project: For my CIP, I served as a Co-President of HOPE. Along with dozens of other students, we worked to host a one-day event that provided basic needs, such as clothes, food, personal care items, and more to around 600 people.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Interim.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I played Volleyball for four years because I realized how much I loved the sport and my team, despite believing I would only play for two years to fulfill the required credit.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Don’t stress about college too early; just do things you enjoy.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to have completed a postgraduate degree in physics or engineering and doing something in a related field.

Immediate Plans: Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, to study Physics.

Brayden Michael Ramseier

At CA Since: Fourth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: One of the most transformational experiences I’ve had at Colorado Academy is REDI Lab. In REDI Lab, I could explore my passions and experience education in a way like no other. I experienced setbacks that prepared me for the coming years. I was able to learn how to manage my time, stay focused, and become a successful independent learner.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered at Cafe 180, a restaurant that prioritizes feeding people regardless of their financial situation. I was able to work as a line cook, dishwasher, and server to help serve the members of my community. I learned why healthy food is so difficult to get, and why it is important that everyone has access to good nutrition.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition at Colorado Academy is Interim. While canoeing on the Green River, I was able to finally realize the true importance of Interim. I was able to strengthen the bond with my friends and interact with people I otherwise wouldn’t have.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: At

Colorado Academy, what made me happiest was the sense of community and belonging I found among my peers and teachers. The school has a welcoming and inclusive culture, and I made friends and formed meaningful connections with people from all different backgrounds.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders:

My advice for incoming CA Ninth Graders would be to take classes that interest them rather than just focusing on the ones that will give them a weighted grade. While striving for high grades is important, exploring different subjects they are passionate about is even more critical.

Immediate Plans: Northeastern University, Boston, Mass., to study Mechanical Engineering.

Faith Elizabeth Reeman

At CA Since: Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Powerful experiences I have had at CA have been REDI Lab and Field Hockey. In REDI Lab, I obtained my pilot’s license, but, most importantly, I approached school from a different perspective, helping me experience something outside of my comfort zone. CA’s Field Hockey team has helped me to work through challenges on and off the field with a great group of girls, ultimately winning the state title!

Community Impact Project: I volunteered with Horizons, tutoring elementary students. I have been able to help a young girl grow academically and gain a personal connection, too.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Interim. While the pandemic impacted Interims some years, my Interims in Middle School included spending a week cooking in Denver, traveling to Costa Rica to do service work, and fly fishing in the mountains of Colorado—all of which I will never forget.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: Electives at CA have surprised me by helping me branch into new passions. As a Ninth Grader, I would not have expected to become more passionate about STEM, as I journeyed through high school. However, through classes like Zoology and Environmental Chemistry, I have.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Do not be afraid to talk to someone new, to take a challenging class you know nothing about, to actually attend the clubs you sign up for, to push yourself outside of your comfort zone because you only get one high school experience, so make it as exciting and full of opportunities as you can.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: Flying to Italy to attend the grand opening of a famously acclaimed restaurant (I am a world-renowned food critic and the one flying the plane).

Immediate Plans: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich., to study Biology.

Diana Lake Reidy

At CA Since: Sixth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: My experience in REDI Lab not only changed the way that I view learning, but also gave me the inspiration and motivation to pursue what makes me happiest. I was able to create my own podcast and interview some of the most important people I look up to, as well as travel to Italy to study and experience art history and European culture.

Community Impact Project: My Community Impact Project was helping run the STEAM section during HOPE. As Directors, my team helped provide an educational experience to kids who wouldn’t regularly be able to learn about coding, physics, and art.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Winning the Field Hockey State Championship this past fall has made me the happiest while at CA. I loved being able to compete for a winning title with my teammates for my last season in high school.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I surprised myself when I started becoming more interested in a topic and class I wasn’t very successful in, but enjoyed it because of how much faith the teacher had in me.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Search for what makes you happy to learn and pursue it. You will find great success in finding joy in learning. There is something for everyone to be passionate about. CA not only gives you the opportunities to help you but surrounds you with people who support you, so use them. And have fun!

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be somewhere in Europe, preferably Italy.

Sawyer Graham Risch

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience:

Joining REDI Lab during the second trimester of my Senior year has been the most powerful experience I’ve had at CA. I was able to design a project around branding and marketing, which is what I intend to study in college. Specifically, I created a scale that measures ethical marketing and allows consumers to have a more informed understanding of how companies and products are trying to influence them. My time in REDI Lab has given me the opportunity to pursue my interests and learn to become an independent thinker.

Community Impact Project: I worked as Food Director for HOPE at CA. I helped prepare the meal at HOPE, and planned and ran HOPE’s first-ever food drive.

Benjamin “Ben” Welborn Rockmore

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: The most transformative experience at CA was going on the backcountry hut trip during Sixth Grade Interim. On this trip, I evolved into a person who felt comfortable in the outdoors. In addition, I felt my confidence and my persona grow positively. This experience is one that I will look back on fondly for many years to come.

What Made Me Happiest at

CA: Getting the opportunity to participate in both sports and band at the same time made me the happiest at CA. These activities and classes created a balance in my day where I could explore my interests.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade:

Community Impact Project: I tutored elementary school students with Horizons. The experience was eye-opening. I am very thankful for the opportunity.

Favorite CA Tradition: Avoiding stepping on the CA crest at the entrance of the Upper School is definitely my favorite tradition. It’s funny to see loads of kids inconveniently walking around the huge logo at the front of the school. I’m proud to say I have never stepped on it.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The sports environment has definitely been a high point of my CA experience. Growing up in Texas, I was exposed to a devout sporting culture, so seeing that continued during my time at CA was great.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have found a love for the sciences, something I had previously disregarded. Physiology was definitely one of my favorite classes, and it opened my eyes to a possible major in college.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I would advise Ninth Graders to establish and develop connections with their teachers throughout their time at CA. These relationships will help them excel academically and will far outlive their high school experience.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to have a good foundation for my career, have experienced lots of new things, and have traveled the world. I want to immerse myself in different cultures and meet new people.

Immediate Plans: Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y.

Community Impact Project: I worked with Denver City Lax to help provide lacrosse coaching, equipment, and educational support to children who do not have easy access to lacrosse. Joanna “Jo” Lim Rydberg

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Working with Horizons Colorado has been an incredibly powerful experience for me, as it led me to discover my passion for working with kids in school.

Community Impact Project: I worked with Horizons Colorado for six weeks over the summer, volunteering with the first graders. Each day, I helped with lesson plans, running camp activities, and helping with swim lessons in the pool.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the Halloween parade when the Lower Schoolers dress up and the Middle and Upper Schoolers line the hallways, giving high fives and candy and cheering on everyone in their costumes.

What Made Me

Happiest at CA: Being part of Ultimate Frisbee and the Girls Swim Team have made me immensely happy during my time in high school. Even though they involved early morning practices, the team environments were so positive and encouraging, and I’ve found some of my closest friends from being part of those teams.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Try new things, even if they make you uncomfortable or think you won’t be good at them. Some of my favorite experiences and memories are from classes and sports teams that I didn’t think I would enjoy, but looking back, I’m so extremely glad that I took a chance and tried something new.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be teaching somewhere in Denver—maybe even at Colorado Academy—and getting a dog!

Immediate Plans: Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., to study Elementary Education and Child Development.

Heidi Elizabeth Schmid

At CA Since: Sixth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I think the most transformative experience I have had at CA is joining the Ultimate Frisbee team. I danced for 13 years for a program outside of CA, and it was a competitive and cliquey environment. Ultimate, however, welcomes everyone, regardless of athletic ability, and, as a result, has a very strong community. It had such an impact on my life that I even mentioned it in my Common App essay!

Community Impact Project: My Community Impact Project is simply called ‘Tutoring Max.’ Max is my neighbor who struggles with autism, and I tutor him in math every Sunday. I started tutoring Max in my Sophomore year of high school, mainly to help him with life skills like counting money and telling time. Over the years, I have gotten to know Max quite well, and I thoroughly enjoy tutoring him. It also feels good to know that I am helping Max become more independent.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: One of the best experiences I have had is being in a really close advisory. I have Ms. Sarles as an advisor, and she ensured that my advisory bonded and got to know each other. While we may not have appreciated the group Freshman year, by Senior year, advisory was one of my favorite times of the day.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I tried out for the musical just to get an art credit and actually ended up enjoying it!

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Just relax. Everything may not seem like it is going perfectly right now, but it will get better. There are ups and downs in high school, so every day will not be perfect.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I honestly do not know! I would love to look into pursuing a career in law, but I may fall in love with journalism, as that is what I am studying in college. We will have to see where the world takes me!

Immediate Plans: Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., to study Journalism and Legal Studies.

Calvin Thomas Schumacher

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Meeting with Mr. Bernstein during my free blocks was a transformational experience for me. During Junior year, I started to slip and struggle toward the end. So Mr. Bernstein and I created a plan to help me with my study habits and transform me into a better student. I met with him in his office and completed my homework for my classes almost every day.

Community Impact Project: My Community Impact Project was fostering and taking care of dogs in my own home. Fostering shelter dogs was a very fun yet difficult task for me. Some dogs are super crazy and have trouble adjusting, but it helped me become a more accepting and patient person.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the Seniors welcoming the Freshmen into the high school on the first day of school. Back when I was a Ninth Grader this was a very meaningful experience because it helped me feel more comfortable in the new school environment surrounded by bigger and older kids.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Playing Lacrosse and winning important games made me the happiest at CA. The brotherhood in Lacrosse is very meaningful to me, and has taught me many life lessons as a person. Being with your brothers and playing and winning games are some of the most fun things I’ve ever experienced.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I’d advise incoming Ninth Graders to keep your grades up. It may not seem like it, but it’s hard to get your GPA up after a bad year academically. So study hard while having fun with your classmates!

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to start up and own a business a decade from now. I want to be an entrepreneur and follow in the footsteps of my mom, who created her own business.

Immediate Plans: University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo., to study Environmental Product Design.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: What has made me the happiest at CA is seeing all the different ages of the people around me. As a younger student, I always looked up to upperclassmen and liked seeing them around campus and now seeing the Pre-K students around campus makes me smile.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: In challenging classes, I have had to push myself to understand the content in a better way that helped me to participate in the class.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: CA has an amazing community of students, faculty, and parents. I would encourage incoming Ninth Grade students to take advantage of that and to form connections with all kinds of people.

Viola “Lola” Sophia Sehl

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I think the most transformational experience I had at CA was the FLEX groups in my Sophomore year where we alternated from online to in-person school every day during COVID-19. This forced me to become more flexible/ adaptable, and I also met a lot of new people.

Community Impact Project: For my CIP, Cat Café Collaboration, I volunteered for the local Denver cat café, Denver Cat Company, that I have been visiting since I was a kid. I wanted to give back to my community and help foster positive experiences for children and adults alike that are looking for a quick, adorable break from everyday life.

Favorite CA Tradition: I have always loved the All-School Picnic at the end of every summer. It’s a great way to get back into the school year on a positive note.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I have surprised myself by doing well in classes I never would have expected myself to. I was wary of some of the science and math classes I took, but then ended up learning a lot.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I would tell incoming CA Ninth Graders to try their absolute best to turn any nervousness they might be feeling into excitement. This is a great mindset for approaching new situations.

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Taking piano lessons with Ms. Li has greatly shaped who I am. She has taught me so much about storytelling, careful listening, problem-solving, and humor through music. In studying with Ms. Li, I’ve gained a lifelong passion for the piano, which I’ve enjoyed sharing with the CA community in recitals and assemblies.

Community Impact Project: Through Horizons Club, which I co-led, I tutored students in math and reading every Tuesday and Thursday at Knapp Elementary. I loved being able to watch as the kids made new breakthroughs in their learning. They made me laugh all the time and always brightened my day.

Favorite CA Tradition: I love the back-to-school picnic! It’s always really nice to come back to school and see the whole community gathered outside, munching on burgers and catching up excitedly. Plus, those watermelon wedges slap!

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Being in classes that blow my mind has made me happiest. From Spanish Lit with Sra. Sitja to Gender Studies with Ms. Pérez, I’ve really enjoyed bonding with my friends and teachers over the ideas we discuss in class.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: Physics has surprised me! Before stepping foot in Mr. McLaughlin’s classroom my Junior year, I would’ve never believed that I would fall in love with Physics. But through Mr. McLaughlin’s patience, passion, and nerdy enthusiasm, I’ve gained a great appreciation for the workings of the physical world.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: My advisory makes me so happy— Wei Gang for life! They are my favorite people.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: One way I have surprised myself is that I have improved greatly balancing my extracurricular activities with school and homework and managing my time more efficiently.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I would recommend getting involved with extracurricular activities, like clubs, early on. This is a great way to learn new skills, make new friends, and possibly discover a new passion.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I plan to start a successful company with my friend Charlie Jones. We will have a positive impact on the world. Change is coming.

Immediate Plans: Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., to study Computer Science.

Bowen Delaney Smith

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: The most powerful experience I’ve had at CA was winning the Soccer State Championship. Being my Senior year, it was my last chance at the trophy. We worked hard all season, and it felt so good to see all that work pay off. I have been playing soccer my whole life, and I couldn’t have asked for a better ending.

Community Impact Project: I worked with the Food Bank of the Rockies, organizing food on the docks. I also started a food drive in my neighborhood that distributed food across the state.

Favorite CA Tradition: Giant Relay Day has been my favorite CA tradition since Pre-K. I always loved it so much because it felt like the perfect introduction to summer. I will miss being with all of my classmates, eating popsicles, and enjoying the day.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The number of tight-knit friendships I have been able to develop with my classmates and teachers has made me the happiest. Everywhere I go around campus, I always see someone I’m friends with, which makes me feel very welcome and makes CA feel like home.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Give your full effort in everything you do, whether it be sports, academics, or friendships. Later on in your high school years, you will look back on the days when you could have done better, so try to limit the number of moments you end up regretting.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to be my own boss, working my dream job, and starting my family.

Immediate Plans: Tulane University, New Orleans, La.

Noah Barrett Sohn

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I’ve been a student at Colorado Academy since I was four years old. In many ways, I feel that the past 14 years have been one transformational experience. This school is largely responsible for crafting the person I am today.

Community Impact Project: Last summer, I assisted the Museo de las Americas with their mission of preserving and celebrating Latin American heritage and culture through the medium of art. In volunteering with their annual Summer Arts & Culture Camp, I had the opportunity to both help children of the community learn about their heritage and learn more about Latin American culture myself.

Favorite CA Tradition: Interim has long been my favorite Colorado Academy tradition. I love how it forces students to enter uncomfortable situations and converse with new people.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Consider your Freshman year as a fresh start. It is an opportunity to begin building your legacy. Be thoughtful and kind, challenge yourself, forge new friendships, and find new passions. High school can be whatever you choose to make it.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to be at the beginning of my life as a professional. Ultimately, I want to do something where I can have a positive impact on others.

Immediate Plans: Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H.

Charlotte Frances Sovka

At CA Since: Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Freshman year, I was lucky enough to travel to El Paso for the immigration Intensive. Talking to people living on the border was a powerful experience, and I learned not just about the politics of immigration, but also the human experience behind it as well.

Community Impact Project: I volunteer to teach art lessons on Super Saturdays for Horizons, including decorated Día de los Muertos pumpkins for Halloween. I’ve loved seeing how much the kids enjoy making art.

Favorite CA Tradition: Ever since I started at CA in Kindergarten, my favorite event of the year has been the All-School Assembly at the beginning of school. I love seeing the whole community come together and show school spirit.

The people I’ve connected with and the friends I’ve made, my advisory, and chicken nugget day in the lunchroom have made me happiest.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I’ve stayed on the Girls Swim Team for all four years of high school—in spite of early-morning practice and eight-hour-long meets.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Don’t feel tied to one group of friends; there’s always room for more.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be at a job I enjoy, in a place that makes me happy. Everything else is up to the universe.

Immediate Plans: McGill University, Quebec, Canada, to study Art History.

Paul “Bennett” Spruell

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: The most powerful experience I had at CA was getting to hear Major Geoff Ball ’06 speak in our War on Terror class. His stories were fascinating, and his leadership and commitment to our country are incredible.

Community Impact Project: I volunteer with Mustang Youth Lacrosse to help coach Coach Hall’s sixth grade lacrosse team. Leading the team through different stick drills and practice games, we were able to create connections with each of the players and share our love for the game.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition is not stepping on the Colorado Academy crest at the entrance of the Upper School. While it may go unnoticed, I like how the whole school participates in it and goes out of their way to hold through with the tradition.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: My happiest times at CA have been spent on Slater Field playing Lacrosse. While I have always enjoyed playing the sport, I will always remember the countless practices and games there that I got to spend with my closest friends.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: One piece of advice I would give to an incoming CA Ninth Grader would be to participate in as many sports as possible. Whether you have played the sport before or not, it’s a great way to meet new people and potentially pick up a hobby that you wouldn’t have known before.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade from now, I hope to be successful in whatever I am doing, as well as spending time to continue my hobbies.

Immediate Plans: Christopher Newport University, Newport News, Va., to study Finance.

Asher Dylan Stull

At CA Since: Fourth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: One of the most powerful experiences I’ve had while at CA has been being a part of the Varsity Ice Hockey and Lacrosse Teams. I’ve made lifelong friends and memories. The leadership I was exposed to as a Freshman and Sophomore shaped the person I am today, and I am extremely grateful to those captains on past teams. Through CA team sports, I have learned mental toughness, courage, vulnerability, and how to be a leader. Without these teams, I truly don’t know where I would be today.

Community Impact Project: I worked alongside Coach Hall and my teammates Bennett Spruell and Buzz Oertel to coach a group of younger kids in lacrosse. We taught them the fundamentals of the game, and did our best to develop their “lacrosse IQ.” It was really cool to see how passionate they were about the game, and it was great to see the younger generation carrying on the game that I love so much

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: When I was younger, I was a very shy and anxious kid. I didn’t feel like I would be able to make new friends or fit in when I moved to CA in Fourth Grade. I surprised myself by coming out of my shell in a way and developing a more outgoing personality. The CA community really pushed me to get outside my comfort zone, talk to new people, and take part in clubs/activities that I never thought I would be in.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade:

I hope to be working in some sort of businessrelated field on my way to becoming a sports agent. I also hope to live comfortably on the East Coast.

Immediate Plans: The Loomis Chaffee School, Windsor, Conn., for a postgraduate year, followed by High Point University, High Point, N.C., to study Business.

Owen Leonid Tilman

At CA Since: Second Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I had the opportunity to lead the CA Speech & Debate Society while it was still in its infancy. I’m thrilled that we’ve recruited so many young, civic-minded thinkers—all of whom are eager to develop their skills in exchanging, truth-testing, and questioning different ideas.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered with VoteRiders—a nonprofit voter registration organization where I wrote 100 letters to voters in Texas, Ohio, and Florida, informing them of the voter ID laws in their states and how to make their voices heard in upcoming elections.

Favorite CA Tradition: Homecoming, of course! It’s great to see the whole community rally together to celebrate school spirit.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Funny enough, it is another CA tradition: how Dr. Davis inaugurates and bookends each academic year by reading the graduating Seniors’ names, one by one.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I am more of an extrovert than I’d initially thought. If CA has taught me anything, however, it’s that I should surround myself with people who will support, encourage, and challenge me as I navigate new chapters in life.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Do not…and I repeat…DO NOT become too emotionally attached to an idealized image of your future. Life can take you in infinitely many directions, and it’s impossible to predict all of them. You will face both successes and setbacks in the next four years (and throughout your life)—whether they are personal, academic, athletic, etc. Work hard, be adventurous, but most importantly, let yourself grow from those experiences.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: Clerking for a federal judge, or perhaps working at a law firm in either New York or D.C.

Immediate Plans: Yale University, New Haven, Conn., to study Philosophy and Political Science, with a minor in Mathematics.

John Thomas “J.T.” Timmers

At CA Since: Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: The most transformational experience I’ve had was certainly the immigration Intensive trip to El Paso in Ninth Grade.

Community Impact Project: I volunteered at the Food Bank of the Rockies main facility. What Made Me Happiest at CA: Theater and Ultimate Frisbee have made me the happiest. I am so incredibly lucky to have found these two amazing communities of people. They have made me a better person, and I know that is true of everyone else who dedicates their time to these activities. I have never had more fun than playing a 10-minute point in Ultimate or talking with castmates during a long rehearsal.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I used to think of myself strictly as an athlete, which was the best way to describe myself throughout all of Lower School and most of Middle School. That’s when I first tried out theater and took a choir class—both of which propelled me into a high school journey full of performance experiences. If I told my 6-year-old self new to CA all about who I am today, I think he would believe everything except that.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade:

I truly don’t have any kind of concrete vision of my life in a decade. I hope that I pursue every academic opportunity available to me in college and that doing so allows me to discover a field that I am passionate about. Whatever that is, I hope it allows me to solve problems that I think are important.

Immediate Plans: Yale University, New Haven, Conn., to study Computer Science, Philosophy, Data Science, Mathematics, and maybe dabble in Neuroscience, in that order.

Bradley Ryan Troyer

At CA Since: Eighth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Seeing my study habits transform from virtually non-existent to very effective was definitely powerful.

Community Impact Project: I helped officiate a carp fishing competition that was a fundraiser for the Denver South Platte, and then a week later, I hosted a river clean-up, where I was able to organize a group of 20 people to help clean up trash along a 1.5mile stretch of river.

Favorite CA Tradition: Giant Relay Day. There are not many traditions that are able to bring so many people across such a large age range together and celebrate the end of a school year.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Being able to fish Woody’s Pond has made me extremely happy. If I have a stressful or difficult week, and I might only have 30 minutes of extra time, I am frequently able to walk over to Woody’s Pond and get a few minutes of fishing in.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA:

I have surprised myself in my ability to adapt to the workload. This year, I took four STEM APs, and at the beginning of the year, I was uncertain whether I would be able to handle the workload, but I surprised myself that I was not only able to handle the workload, I was able to succeed.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Stay on top of your work and turn in homework on time. You will be surprised how much of your grade will be impacted by missing assignments. Also, catching up on work, plus doing current assignments, can be really stressful and overwhelming.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I plan to be living in Alaska. It has been my dream to live there for quite some time. The Alaskan outdoors has made it quite hard for me to want to be in any other place.

Immediate Plans: University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign, Ill., to study Chemical Engineering.

James Curran “J.C.” Turner

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Being part of the Community Leadership Team has been one of the most powerful experiences I’ve had at CA. Mentoring and supporting the Ninth Graders have not only allowed me to learn about leadership through experience, but also learn about myself and who I want to be as well.

Community Impact Project: Through the organization A Little Help, I volunteered directly with senior citizens around the Denver Metro Area. I spent time helping out with yard work, housework, and providing a source of companionship for a community that can often feel forgotten. To continue CA’s involvement in the senior citizen community, my friend Remy Guillot and I founded the Senior Citizens and Alzheimer’s Club so other CA students can continue what we started.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the All-School Homecoming Assembly. I like that the whole school, from Pre-K through Grade 12, gets to come together and celebrate the school before the Saturday of Homecoming sports.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Being part of the Tennis Team has been one of the greatest experiences of my CA career, and it is where I found myself to be the happiest. Working from the JV squad to the V1 squad, I got a feel for the entire program at CA and developed relationships that I know will last a lifetime. My favorite memories came during the State Tournament my Senior year and playing #4 Doubles with my brother.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Be open to everything that the CA community offers. Try new clubs, explore different areas of academics, and spend time with different people.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to have found work that is important to me and to be surrounded by people that I love.

Immediate Plans: University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Va., to study Political Science and Economics.

Maya Vendhan

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: For the past couple of years, I attended the CU Boulder Choir Festival with Chanteurs. It was incredible to be able to sing with hundreds of students from across the state.

Community Impact Project: I visited a Title I elementary school in Denver and distributed STEM supplies and kits, so the students could explore STEM subjects. I also gave presentations about women in STEM to encourage the young students to continue with their interest in STEM fields. Overall, it was an incredible experience because I was able to connect with my community and address a problem I am passionate about solving.

Favorite CA Tradition: The Senior class welcoming incoming Freshmen on the first day of school is a great opportunity for the new high school students to join the CA community. I loved decorating the school in our theme and having Senior pride. I remember how great it felt to walk through the tunnel of Seniors on my first day in Ninth Grade, and it was amazing to be on the other side as a Senior.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: What has made me happiest at CA are the wonderful friends that I’ve made here and how they are always there to support me.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: My Freshman year, I picked up a golf club for the first time and joined the team. I have really enjoyed playing and some of my favorite high school memories have been with the Golf Team!

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: This is your chance to try new things! Don’t be afraid to pick up a new sport, art, or class and see if you like it! It might become one of your favorite activities.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be pursuing a career in a STEM field that I am passionate about.

Immediate Plans:

Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif., to study Applied Mathematics.

James Caelen Wallace

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I started the first Middle School GSA Club and then went on to co-lead the high school one this year—which helps me feel closer to my community. Community Impact Project: I planted an edible garden next to the child care houses on CA’s campus.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition is Faculty Follies.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: Doing technical theater has made me happiest at CA. After I lost the use of my leg, it was one of the few social things I was still able to do without feeling separated because of my lack of independent mobility.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: Starting Ninth Grade year, I would never believe that I would be leading a club and going to my first-choice college with a scholarship.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: The advice I would give to incoming Ninth Graders is to join every club and activity you can if it sounds fun.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In a decade, I hope to be working as an engineer for a local company, in a relationship, with maybe a cat or two.

Immediate Plans: University of Denver, Denver, Colo., to study Electrical Engineering.

Isabella “Ella” Catherine Walsh

At CA Since: Eleventh Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: My experience with the Arts program has been particularly transformational. The opportunity to develop my own portfolio has not only been empowering as an artist, but has pushed my ability to work quickly and accept mistakes.

Community Impact Project: I tutored for Horizons Colorado through CA. I had the opportunity to work closely with a fifth grade girl, teaching her math and reading comprehension as well as playing and drawing with her.

Favorite CA Tradition: I love the Kindergarten Buddies program. While I didn’t have the opportunity to experience it from the Lower School side, it’s been so fun to get to know my Buddy and relive those years through her.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: The Ultimate Frisbee Team is an incredibly tightknit and supportive community. I’ve greatly enjoyed my time playing alongside them, whether in scrimmages or full-fledged tournaments.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I surprised myself with the adjustment. Moving out-of-state Junior year certainly presented challenges, but I’m proud of how I’ve taken the change in stride and made the most of the experience.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Try everything! It’s not only a great way to discover new interests but also to meet cool people.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: While I hope to be in graduate school pursuing a career in academia, that’s subject to change. More importantly, I hope I live on my own, stay in close touch with my friends and family, and have a cat.

Immediate Plans: Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif., to study Physics.

Kai Merrick Wang

At CA Since: Eighth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: My most transformative experience has been my interactions with my teachers—especially the ones who taught me history. They inspired me to pursue history more seriously and to really connect the dots between our past and our present. From Mr. Augustin to Ms. Wolf-Tinsman, I really appreciate the energy and excitement that my teachers have shown me. They showed me how cool dusty old books and tinny recordings can be. I’m excited to keep learning more history in college.

Community Impact Project:

My CIP project is a combination of my community service with the Aurora Teen Court and the International Rescue Committee (IRC). Teen Court is a group which gives reformative justice to teens who commit minor crimes, and the IRC is a group which finds and sets up refugee families with permanent homes.

Favorite CA Tradition: Any event where I get to spend time with my advisory (Ms. Wei) has always been extremely fun, but the door decorating competition is the best. Sophomore year, we had a cool tree, and Junior year we had a haunted house with our faces glued onto the monsters.

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I did not see myself becoming involved in Mock Trial while at CA. I’m a fairly shy person, so arguing cases never seemed like something that I would like, but encouragement from teachers really pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I ended up finding something that I love to do.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I want to be working in foreign service as either a human rights lawyer or in government in some form. I want to help people around the world and promote greater understanding between cultural and national differences.

Immediate Plans: Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., to study International Relations and French.

Tanner Patrick Wells

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: My most powerful experience was becoming a club leader at CA. During my Junior year, I founded Modern Society Club, and during my Senior year, I founded the Fishing Club. Leading clubs gave me a new sense of responsibility and leadership, which pushed me to make the clubs a good experience for everyone. I really enjoyed creating an opportunity for my peers to follow their interests and have a great time doing it.

Community Impact Project: I helped people struggling with Alzheimer’s disease by visiting Alzheimer’s patients’ homes to help them with a variety of tasks that they could not do on their own.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition at CA is the annual Interim trip at the end of the year. My Junior year, I had an amazing, once-in-alifetime experience. I got to “duckie” the Colorado River, camp for four nights, and experience incredible nature. I had a great time and built a lot of friendships with the other kids on my trip.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: At CA, the amazing community the school offers and the relationships I have built with so many of my friends and teachers have made me the happiest. Additionally, the tight-knit sports teams I get to be a part of have made my high school experience.

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: In 10 years, I hope to have finished graduate school and moved to a beach somewhere where I can pursue my career in engineering or medicine and go surfing everyday.

Immediate Plans: University of California - Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, Calif., to study Biomedical Engineering on a Pre-Med track.

Madeleine Virginia Worrall

Powerful/Transformational Experience: A powerful experience for me was when I joined the school play earlier this year. It was an amazing experience to learn how to do a different type of performance and to be part of the Theater community at CA.

Community Impact Project: I created an edible herb garden on campus in a dual project with another student. We designed, bought, planted, and maintained the garden over the summer and into the school year. We chose this project because we wanted to brighten the school community with the garden.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is Interim because you get to do something that you never would have done otherwise. My Junior year, I got to carve marble in Marble, Colo., which was an amazing experience. Each trip is really special and memorable, and I have grown closer with people as a result.

Ana Paula Yáñez

At CA Since: Ninth Grade

Powerful/Transformational Experience: Being able to attend the Student Diversity Leadership Conference in San Antonio with some of my classmates was incredible. Seeing people engaging in DEI work across the country was so inspiring, especially other students of color at independent schools! I made so many connections and memories!

Community Impact Project: I’ve tutored through Horizons for the last two years and have built strong relationships with the kids and developed mentoring skills as well. Being around the kids at Knapp Elementary reminds me a lot of my own childhood, so it’s been great to give back to a community that raised me.

Favorite CA Tradition: Definitely the Senior/ Freshman welcome! I remember my Ninth Grade year. I was terrified and exhilarated at the same time, and it’s truly a full-circle moment to be able to welcome a new group of students just like you were welcomed!

How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I am surprised by how much I have been able to involve myself in the CA community even as a new student. By joining Community Council, leading clubs like FACES of Diversity and Ethics Bowl, and being a CLT member, I have made invaluable friendships and connections in just four years.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: Put yourself out there! Be kind to those who deserve it, and never forget to express your gratitude. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Enjoy every second of it; before you know it, it’s over!

Where I Hope to Be in a Decade: I hope to be happy, doing something I love, surrounded by friends and family. I hope that I’ve kept the same curiosity about the world that I have now. I hope that I keep in touch with the people who have helped me achieve my goals thus far, and am able to express my gratitude well into my future.

Immediate Plans: Pomona College, Claremont, Calif.

Alekzondra Nastasia “Sasha” Andre Yuffa

At CA Since: Pre-Kindergarten

Powerful/Transformational Experience: I went to a dance conference my Junior year of high school as a part of CA’s Dance Company. When there, I performed a piece that I later won a merit scholarship for. That completely altered the confidence I had in my abilities in a large range of things I do. I am now able to immerse myself with confidence in many new activities. Community Impact Project: I co-led the NHSDA Club (National Honor Society for Dance Arts) with an aim to further dance education through donations, self-choreography, collaboration with HOPE, and more. Through these different outreach activities, we strived to not only help those who don’t have access to materials, but also provide a creative outlet in order to better their mental health.

Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA traditions are the Senior-oriented activities. From the first-day-of-school Senior chant to the Senior-Kindergarten Buddy program, I have always enjoyed witnessing and being a part of them.

What Made Me Happiest at CA: I joined the Ultimate Frisbee Team and found lifelong friends and a love for a new sport. I was able to be my truest self, and was supported in bettering my abilities both as a player and person. How I Have Surprised Myself at CA: I did not anticipate being a part of so many things in my CA community. Not only that, but I became a leader in a majority of the activities I was a part of.

Advice For Incoming CA Ninth Graders: I would tell CA incoming Ninth Graders to try to immerse themselves in as much as they can because they may find a new-found love for an academic subject, sport, or other extracurricular that they might’ve not considered before.
