The Class of 2019
Congratulations to the Colorado Academy Class of 2019!
This class of 100 students is a remarkable collection of young people. These students are mathematicians, singers, dancers, scientists, athletes, performers, journalists, philanthropists, innovators, selfdirected learners, photographers, and entrepreneurs. They have done an excellent job of mentoring younger students at CA and acting as exemplary role models.
Every member of this class devoted time to causes beyond CA. Students rebuilt mountain trails, volunteered in Haiti, played music for homebound seniors, organized political debates, removed graffiti, volunteered with Special Olympics, and in many more ways created better local and global communities.
The Class of 2019 has great ambitions for the future, starting with the college studies they plan: neuroscience, business, psychology, engineering, computer science, acting, medicine, architecture, international studies, economics, astronomy, comparative literature—and more. Their years at CA have prepared them for the challenges and opportunities of the future, and they are ready for their next steps.
Thanks to the Class of 2019 for all you have brought to CA and good luck on your new adventures!

Jacob Sawyer Abbott
At CA since: Third Grade Powerful Experience: One of the most powerful experiences for me was being able to join the Boys Soccer program. This tightknit community welcomed me and allowed me to enjoy doing something I loved every day.
Community Impact Project: I worked on preserving trails in the Appalachian Mountains with a volunteer crew run by the Appalachian Mountain Club.
Favorite CA Tradition: The Seniors welcoming the Freshmen outside the Upper School on the first day of school marked the start of my high school career (and the beginning of the end), and that helped me realize how much I had accomplished to get to this point.
Transformational Experience I will Remember: On my Interim trip to Belize, I completed hands-on scientific research. This experience confirmed my love for studying environmental science.
Immediate Plans: Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., to study Environmental Sciences.
Kerr Joseph Allan
At CA since: Third Grade Community Impact Project: I volunteered to teach ceramics to younger students. I tried to help them learn that nothing is perfect, so they shouldn’t be discouraged by their work, because it’s okay not to be completely happy with everything you produce.
Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition at CA is having a Kindergarten Buddy. We spend a lot of time together, but my favorite experience is going to the Denver Zoo together.
Transformational Experience I will Remember: When I traveled to Montreal, Quebec, on a school trip, I met an elderly shopkeeper. She only spoke French, and I only spoke elementary French, but I spent a long time talking to her. This experience really showed me how much insight you gain when you listen to the stories of people who are very different from yourself. Everyone has wisdom to share.
Where I Hope to be in a Decade: Ten years from now, I hope to be in the middle of welding pieces of metal together in a machine shop, halfway through building whatever project I’m working on that day.
Immediate Plans: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Calif., to study Engineering.
6
James Wyatt Allen
At CA since: Ninth Grade
Powerful Experience: My most powerful experience has been playing Ultimate Frisbee since my Freshman year. Playing on the team, I have made many friends and enjoyed competing in the State Tournament multiple times.
Community Impact Project: I helped pack 3,000 pounds of food into more than a thousand meals for the Food Bank of the Rockies.
Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite tradition is the StudentAlumni Frisbee game at the end of the year, because all the players of the Ultimate team try to beat the alumni and coaches.
Transformational Experience I will Remember: I traveled to Senegal, where I spent time with a Senegalese family. I also worked with other students to rebuild a school, and we played sports with the local kids.
Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I hope to use my education to make a lasting impact on the world.
What made me happiest at CA: I know I have made some lifelong friendships with the people in my class.
Immediate Plans: Elon University, Elon, N.C., to study Engineering.
Claire Elaine Anderson
At CA since: Ninth Grade Powerful Experience: In Sophomore year, I saw The Laramie Project performed by CA. It was incredibly moving to see a production that encompassed both history and emotion. It gave me the opportunity to learn about a historic event that was transformative.
Community Impact Project: I volunteered for a year at the Acute Care of the Elderly unit at UCHealth. My favorite part of any shift was talking to patients.
Favorite CA Tradition: Ever since Freshman year, I’ve loved Open Mic. I think it’s a really good opportunity to discuss social justice issues with my peers.
Transformational Experience I will Remember: When I qualified as an individual for the Colorado State Cross Country Championships, I was really nervous beforehand, but many of the girls from CA’s team made the trip to Colorado Springs so that they could cheer for me. The CA Cross Country family always brings me joy, for which I’m incredibly grateful.
Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I hope to work in mental health research and advocacy.
Immediate Plans: Wellesley College, Wellesley, Mass., to study Biology, History, and Philosophy.

Powerful Experience: I can’t begin to express the gratitude I have for my family and their choice to send me to CA. The relationships I have made with amazing friends and the endless patience and kindness of incredible teachers have shown me the capacity for good within all people and have shaped me into who I am today.
Community Impact Project: I worked with the Road to Hope to organize donations of school supplies for the school CA supports in Nordette, Haiti. In Haiti, I learned that the smallest acts of kindness can encourage students to love learning. Traveling to Haiti changed me for the better, and a piece of my heart will always be in Nordette.
Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite traditions at CA are Senior speeches and Open Mic at PlatFORUM. I am grateful to be part of a community where students feel at home and eager to share every aspect of themselves to create genuine understanding.

Immediate Plans: University of Stirling, Stirling, Scotland, to study Fashion Merchandising.
Marianna (Mari) Caroline Annest
At CA since: Sixth Grade
Powerful Experience: Taking classes from Mr. Terrazas was incredibly powerful. Not only did my writing benefit because of it, I learned how to approach intellectual debate with other people and think carefully about issues far more complex than they can seem on the surface.
Community Impact Project: I was the Director of Community Outreach for the 25th annual Students H.O.P.E. event. I was delighted that we had a record-breaking year, with nearly 2,200 people in attendance.

Transformational Experience I will Remember: Running cross country all four years at CA was incredibly impactful for me. At first, I thought it was a really hard sport, but when I learned to approach it in a different way, it became enjoyable and gratifying.
What made me happiest at CA: Every day, there was something to look forward to at school, most often because of the people I got to interact with through experiences like Advisory and playing on the Girls Soccer team.
Immediate Plans: Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., to study Applied Mathematics and Economics.

What made me happiest at CA: When I arrived as a Freshman, I remember feeling that I was instantly a part of the community, because everyone is so kind and open. This community not only made my high school experience one that I will always remember, but it made me a better person as well.
Immediate Plans: University of St Andrews, St Andrews, Scotland, to study English.
McCue (Mac) Moore Behrhorst
At CA since: Ninth Grade
Powerful Experience: One of my most powerful CA experiences was being a part of our Lacrosse Team. The coaches taught me the importance of working hard and giving everything in life my best effort.
Community Impact Project: I played free shows with my jazz trio at homes for senior citizens. I chose this for my project because I’m a big believer that music makes life more enjoyable.
Favorite CA Tradition: At the final home game of the season in each sport, the Senior players are honored. I like that CA shows respect to Senior team leaders, and it’s also fun because our Kindergarten Buddies come to the game and hang out with us!
Transformational Experience I will Remember: When I joined the choir with Mrs. Jordan in my Junior year, her kindness and passion for singing helped me to realize my own love of music.
What made me happiest at CA: Attending CA has been one of the best experiences of my life. A big thank-you to my family, classmates, coaches, and teachers who made every day special.
Immediate Plans: Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y.

Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I see myself creating businesses that will make a lasting impact on the world. I hope to be a visionary and innovator who is also a student of the global classroom.
Immediate Plans: University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla., to study Entrepreneurship.
Sophia (Sophie) Lee Morrison Berger

Then, I used the data I gathered to inform my performance as Scarlett in Girls Like That, which depicted the story of a girl bullied through social media.
Community Impact Project: I ran CA’s student talent show “Coffee Haus” and donated the proceeds of admission to the Tennyson Center, which provides education and housing opportunities to children and families dealing with neglect, abuse, and trauma.
Transformational Experience I will Remember: In my Freshman year I took Acting 1, and our class was really like a little family. Without that class, I wouldn’t have discovered that I want to pursue theater for the rest of my life.
Where I Hope to be in a Decade: I see myself being in a Tony Awardwinning play, taking dance classes, and immersing myself in what I love most!
Immediate Plans: The American Musical and Dramatic Academy to study Acting and Dance.

What made me happiest at CA: When I worked as a summer lifeguard at CA, our team of lifeguards showed me that working can be fun if you have a good attitude about the job.
Immediate Plans: University of San Diego, San Diego, Calif., to study Real Estate, Film, or Communications.
Ella Noble Bittman
At CA since: Pre-Kindergarten
Powerful Experience: CA’s choir has fostered my love for music. At every Spring Concert, as the Seniors’ names are announced, along with the number of trimesters they’ve been in choir, an underclassman gives each a rose. I have waited with excitement to receive that rose and hear my name and “12 trimesters” read to the crowd.
Community Impact Project: To give back to the Horizons community, I decided to take family and student portraits. I framed, edited, and gave the photos to the families.
Favorite CA Tradition: Every year, at the assembly on the first day of school, the Seniors’ names are announced as they stand one by one in the center of the gym. For years, I’ve listened to the names of siblings and close friends being read, but on the first day of my Senior year when I heard my name said aloud, it felt like the experience had come full circle.
Transformational Experience I will Remember: I came to this school at age five, and have spent the last 14 years maturing not only as a student, but as a person. Growing up with the people on this campus has shaped me into who I am today, and I look back with great joy on the moments I’ve had here.
Immediate Plans: Auburn University, Auburn, Ala., to study Education.
11
Jackson (Jax) Provine Briggs
At CA since: Ninth Grade
Powerful Experience: My most powerful experience has been the many ways CA promotes the intermixing of grades. Some of my closest high school friends were older than I am, and they were my role models.
Community Impact Project: I organized the “Paint the Town” event. Using donated paint and supplies, my friends, family, and I bused around Denver to cover unwanted bridge and park graffiti. I’m proud to have helped preserve Denver’s beauty.
Favorite CA Tradition: I’ve always enjoyed Halloween festivities, including the Lower School Parade with everyone in their costumes. It’s comical to see teachers and peers adopt a new appearance and personality for the day.
Transformational Experience I will Remember: Because of CA, I’ve become a strong writer. I feel confident in my ability to form an opinion, and I feel prepared for what’s ahead.
What made me happiest at CA: What I value most about CA is the support I have received from teachers. All CA teachers want to help you succeed.
Immediate Plans: Denison University, Granville, Ohio, to study Business and International Relations.

Powerful Experience: The process of putting on a Portfolio Show has taught me so much about who I am as an artist, how to create art, and what art means to me.

Transformational Experience I will Remember: Taking AP European History and two additional trimesters of Mr. Thomas’s history courses was a real challenge, but these courses allowed me to better learn how to manage my academics with the other parts of my life.
What made me happiest at CA: The simple day-to-day experience of high school has been elevated by the people around me, and I am incredibly grateful to have gone to school with so many people who were enjoyable to be around.
Immediate Plans: Southern Methodist University, University Park, Texas, to study Economics and Psychology.
Conner Daniel Brook
At CA since: Ninth Grade
Powerful Experience: For my Junior year Interim, I traveled down the Colorado River for a week on inflatable kayaks with a dozen CA students. Between floating down rapids in the day, setting up camp on the riverside at night, and jumping off rocks into the chilly waters below, it was unbelievable.
Community Impact Project: I went to Israel over the summer to teach the game of lacrosse to Israeli youth and strengthen the ties of Diaspora Jewry to Israel.
Favorite CA Tradition: At the end of the season, once the final game has ended and tears are flowing, all of the Seniors on the Lacrosse Team write their names on the walls of the Lax House, joining the many that have come before them.
Transformational Experience I will Remember: The biggest takeaway I had from CA was how to effectively communicate with people (especially adults). This is a life skill that cannot be underestimated. What made me happiest at CA: Competing on the soccer and lacrosse fields has made me happiest, and, although I am sad to leave my classmates, I know they will always be a part of my life.

Community Impact Project: For my Community Impact Project I collected a week’s worth of Starbucks cups from the Upper School. I transformed this waste into a hanging installation to show the environmental impact of a small morning habit. I encouraged the use of reusable cups and was proud to see the reduction of plastic and paper waste in our trash bins.
Favorite CA Tradition: Students do not step on the CA Crest on the floor of the entry to the Upper School, which shows the respect the students of Colorado Academy have for their community and education.
Transformational Experience I will Remember: AP English Literature forced me to become a better writer and delve deeper into language. I know that in the future I will remember the shift in my reading and writing because of this class.
What made me happiest at CA: My favorite thing about my time at Colorado Academy has been walking into school every morning. Seeing my friends every day is what makes me smile.

What made me happiest at CA: When I look back on my CA experience, my happiest memories are always associated with the people that I have been surrounded by, whether that be my friends, teachers, or family.

Powerful Experience: On Interim with Dr. Davis, we went to Bears Ears National Monument, camped in a really remote area, and hiked some of the most ambitious routes I’ve ever done. This Interim showed me that I can do really strenuous physical activity in a harsh environment and still have an enjoyable time.
Community Impact Project: I worked with CA’s Students H.O.P.E. and directed the clothing section. This year, the organization’s 25th anniversary, we collected a record number of donations from members of the CA community.

Powerful Experience: When I was “called up” to a Junior Hockey Team in Glassboro, N.J., all my CA teachers went out of their way to help support me. The experience was terrific. It provided an opportunity for me to live away from home and balance intense training with all the school work I had.
Community Impact Project: I worked with the Colorado Avalanche’s Mile High Mites Learn to Play program. Learn to Play offers more children and families the opportunity to experience hockey.
Favorite CA Tradition: My favorite CA tradition is the SeniorKindergarten Buddy program. I remember finally being a Senior and getting my “Kindie.”

Transformational Experience I will Remember: Ten years from now, I will remember the friendships that I have built at CA. Because it is such a small school, it is really easy to make connections and longlasting friendships with the students here.
Where I Hope to be in a Decade: It has always been my dream to be able to give back to my parents for giving me the opportunity to attend a school like CA. I would not be here without their sacrifices, so it’s really important for me that they know how much I appreciate them.
