Wreaths Across America at Templeton Cemetery District Wreaths were placed at 350 veteran graves By CAMILLE DeVAUL camille@atascaderonews.com

PASO ROBLES — The El Paso de Robles Chapter, National Society Daughters of America (NSDAR), and the Templeton American Legion Post #220 paid tribute this holiday season to 350 Veterans buried at the Templeton Cemetery. This was the chapter’s third year working with the legion in raising funds for the purchase of the wreaths. Volunteers with the NSDAR and the Templeton Legion gathered around the flag pole, located at the center of the Templeton

Cemetery District, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, to participate in the annual Wreaths Across America (WAA) Day. Members from the El Paso de Robles Chapter, NSDAR were Lisa Wood Regent, Lida Lucas, Diana Brenna, Linda Wood, Teresa Terry, Susan Howard, Lori Mansfield, Denise Carlson, Susan Clark, and her husband, Mike Clark. Templeton American Legion Post #220 opened the ceremony with their color guard, and El Paso de Robles Chapter president Lisa Wood led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. A prayer was read, and a bugler played taps, the tune we all know for its role in military funeral ceremonies. Wood addressed the volunteers saying, CONTINUED ON PAGE A14

ATASCADERO — Local animal lovers of all ages headed out to Charles Paddock Zoo on Saturday, Dec. 18, to participate in the Zoo’s 14th annual Holiday Magic event. From 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., spectators could watch the animals rip into their beautifully wrapped holiday gifts provided by the community. “This is a fun event for us [the Zoo]. What it is, is a chance for the [Zoo] keepers to [get to] think out of the box a little bit. Sometimes they come up with some pretty crazy ideas for the presents for the animals,” said Charles Paddock Zoo’s Director, Alan Baker. Holiday Magic is a busy day for Charles Paddock Zoo, usually bringing in close to 1,000 patrons. And that’s no surprise since the Zoo’s animals are usually fed off exhibit, or where it isn’t easy for people coming to the Zoo to watch them eat. But at the Holiday Magic event, there’s a full schedule provided, so you know precisely when each of the animals will receive their presents. “We have it scheduled that the tiger’s going to get his present at a certain time. Usually, he winds up ripping it all apart. So, it’s a little more spectacular than [him] just walking over and eating something,” continued Baker. The animals were as excited as the people watching as they dug into their gifts provided by the public and members of Charles Paddock Zoo. “What we do is, we have a wishlist on our website, and people can choose to purchase a gift if they want,” added Baker. “Usually, we put that list [for Holiday Magic] up around, right after our Halloween event. But we have a wishlist that’s out there [all] year long for little extra things. A lot of times, they’re special things. And people can if they want to, donate directly to the animal [of their choice].” Each and every animal at the Zoo is gifted an item or fun snack, even if they’re not on the schedule for the day. “Everybody will get something special today. But, if it’s a Dart Frog, it may just be something extra. Nobody would really see that, but the Dart Frog will appreciate it,” Baker said with a laugh.

Atascadero High School Students Fight Harassment On Campus Students met at Sunken Gardens and marched to the campus to gain attention from school officials By CAMILLE DeVAUL

ATASCADERO — On Dec. 17, close to 100 students from Atascadero High School (AHS) met at the Sunken Gardens after school to discuss a recurring problem at the school. Several reports of sexual assault and harrasment have been made on campus, yet according to students, those reports have been dismissed by school officials. Students told Atascadero News an Instagram account, ahs_iustitia, was created by a student after their friend reported an assault to school officials who discredited the allegation. Iustitia is Latin for Lady Justice. The account is an anonymous account where students can anonymously tell their stories of assault or harassment. One student, whose name has been redacted, told Atascadero News “We are taking it into our own hands because every time students have gone to the school, they have turned them away— We’re trying to do what we can as students seeing as no one else is supporting us.” The same student referenced her own story, saying a student from the ASB club has been harassing her and when reported to school officials, the offending student was defended by saying it was a “bad love story.” The account’s bio reads, “ahs do better: for those too afraid to speak out, or nothing was done. to show the problem & spread awareness. DM me and I will post anonymously. student run.” As of Dec. 21, 49 stories have been posted to the account. Student stories include stories of

harassment, sexual assault, and racism on campus. Stories come from current students as well as alumni. There are many stories involving reports of sexual assault that were dismissed by school officials: “I told a counselor freshman year that I was being SA by another student at the school and she responds by saying she was family friends with his parents and he would never do something like that. I am now a senior and still get panic attacks whenever I see him. Why didn’t she just believe me?” One students story involves rape: “ When I told the office about my rapist they completely dismissed it by saying it was a bad love story.” And others have stories of stalkers: “I’m a freshman and when I reported by stalker to the office they didn’t care and instead they sympathized with him claiming I bullied him” After meeting at the Sunken Gardens, the students headed to the school with signs to bring awareness to their cause. The students plan to meet over winter break to form a club, “We want the school to change their policies and rules and take things more seriously because it is serious stuff—we want this conversation

to keep going.” The students hope to see more actions of discipline from school officials and for their reports to be taken more seriously. Atascadero Unified School District (AUSD) Trustee George Shoemaker told Atascadero Newsthe students organized the event themselves, yet he and many parents were present. Superintendent Tom Butcher told Atascadero News, the students “did a nice job of making a statement in a peaceful manner, we appreciate that.” The Atascadero Unified School District sent the following statement to Atascadero News: “The Atascadero Unified School District is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and positive school campus for students and staff. We encourage our students, parents, and Over 100 AHS students and parents met at Sunken Gardens and marched to the district office to raise attention staff to report these types of concerns for their cause. Atascadero Greyhound Boy’s Water Polo Team Historic CIF Win! AHS Boys won against Golden West with a score of 11-5 By CHRISTIANNA MARKS

ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Greyhound Boy’s Water Polo Team brought home a historic win on Saturday, Dec. 11, with the school’s first-ever CIF Central Section Division III Championship! They won against Golden West Visalia, with a score of 11-5. “This is actually the first time in school history that our water polo [team] has won CIF,” said Head Coach Jon Conrad. “They’re just a phenomenal group of young men that put in a lot of hours early in the morning and late into the evening to be at their best performance. They stepped up really big for this game. It was great,” he continued about his winning team. The Greyhound Water Polo Team is a Senior led team this year, with a total of ten Seniors. “Only one of my starters is a junior. His name is Ben Strohl. He led the team with goals this year with 126. Which was the school record,” boasted Conrad. Nate Benedix, Conall Brown, Logan Chubon, Dylan Clark, Aiden Garrett, James Hazelwood, Luke Heckman, Greg Hider, Curran Hoxie, Morgan Jones, Casey Jones, Caleb Newby, Leo Pan, Philip Ramsdell, Traise Rodriguez, Brandon Snyder, Ben Strohl, and Vince Vega make up the 18 players on the Championship winning team. “As a parent, it has been such a joy to watch these boys grow and

come together as a team. During the last couple of years, these players have really become a family. When one player is successful, the entire team celebrates. And I know the parents feel the same - we feel pride in every player’s accomplishment; these are all ‘our boys.’ At the final game, while we were cheering and celebrating, there were also tears. The emotion of this triumph was simply overwhelming,” said team mom, Nicole Hider. On Wednesday, Dec. 15, The City of Atascadero, along with Atascadero High School’s Athletic Director, Sam DeRose, organized a parade to celebrate the team’s big win! Atascadero’s Fire and Police Departments were both heavily involved. Giving the players rides along the parade route. “They organized a short little parade from the school, the high school, over to City Hall. And then, all the boys got to be honored in front of friends and family. The school band was there, and the cheerleaders. It was a fun time,” said Conrad of the parade. “It was neat to get a ride in the fire engine and the old school, Chevy cop car. It was fun for the kids.” The parade was attended by proud parents of the team, the team’s classmates, and a large array of locals who came out to support their Water Polo CIF Champions. “It’s just awesome being part of a town that really just appreciates the work that these kids put into athletics,” continued Conrad. The Greyhounds are gearing up to go up against Palo Alto for state playoffs. Congratulations to our new CIF This is the first time in history the AHS water polo team has won CIF. Contributed photos. CDC Reports Vaccines Expected to Protect Against Variants California Department of Public Health confirms first case of Omicron (B.1.1.529) in a San Luis Obispo County STAFF REPORT

SAN LUIS OBISPO — On Friday, Dec. 17, the County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department received notice from the California Department of Public Health of the first confirmed case of Omicron (B.1.1.529) in a San Luis Obispo County resident. Public Health is withholding certain personal information such as age, gender, and other information to protect the identity of this community member. “It was only a matter of time before the Omicron variant would find its way to our community and we want to reassure our community that we have a strong surveillance system in place to identify any future cases of COVID-19 that carry the Omicron variant,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer. “Many of our community members already know what we need to do to reduce transmission and slow spread, and this includes getting vaccinated, boosted, tested if you feel sick or are in close contact, and wearing your mask in indoor public spaces.” County Health reported that with the continued transmission and the possibility of a highly infectious new variant of concern,

all residents across San Luis Obispo County should continue adhering to requirements and masking in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccination status. “We are committed to providing our community members with timely information about the Omicron variant and will provide updates as events warrant,” said Dr. Borenstein. “Until we know more about Omicron, I strongly encourage our community members to stay calm, remain vigilant, and use the tools and resources we have at our disposal to protect yourself, your families, and our community.” While Delta is still the predominant variant locally, Public Health will keep the public informed as Omicron emerges and asks everyone to remain mindful of our current disease situation. SLO County has had 153 new cases of COVID-19 since last Tuesday, with 15 residents in the hospital, including four people in the intensive care unit. This brings the 14-day daily case average to 39. “Unfortunately, San Luis Obispo County remains in the red or worst tier of COVID19 transmission as defined by the Centers for Disease Control, and this is not where we want to stay as we head into the winter months,” said Dr. Borenstein. “We have the tools and resources at our disposal to help prevent a winter surge and all variants of COVID-19… staying home when sick, masking in public indoor spaces, getting your vaccine doses, and your booster as soon as you are eligible.”

Reports by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated on Dec. 15; more data is needed to know if the Omicron variant infections, especially reinfections and breakthrough infections in fully vaccinated people, cause more severe illness or death than infection with other variants. Or how easily Omicron spreads compared to Delta remains unknown. CDC expects that anyone with Omicron infection can spread the virus to others, even if they are vaccinated or don’t have symptoms. Currently, the CDC reported that the vaccines are expected to protect against severe illness, hospitalizations, and deaths due to infection with the Omicron variant. However, breakthrough infections in people who are fully vaccinated are likely to occur. Scientists are working to determine how well existing treatments for COVID19 work. Based on the changed genetic make-up of Omicron, some treatments are likely to remain effective while others may be less effective. According to the readyslo.org website, the total cases since March 2020 is 31,192 current active cases, 307 recovered cases, 30,505, and total deaths, 370, which is 0.01 percent of the total cases in San Luis Obispo County. According to the County, more than 72.3 percent of eligible San Luis Obispo County residents have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 65.5 percent are fully vaccinated. Variants Found in SLO County

According to County Health, only a small number of COVID-19 positive samples are sequenced statewide and locally to determine the variant. For example, only 13 percent of samples were sequenced in California in June. • 1,414 = Delta (B.1.617.2) • 409 = Epsilon (B.1.427/B.1.429) • 340 = Alpha (B.1.1.7) • 47 = Gamma (P.1) • 8 = Beta (B.1.351) • 1 = Omicron (B.1.1.529) Statewide COVID-19 Data Vaccinations 62,762,797 total vaccines administered. 78.4 percent of the eligible population (5+) has been vaccinated with at least one dose. 189, 079 people a day are receiving COVID-19 vaccination (average daily dose count over 7 days). Cases California has 4,935,461 confirmed cases. Today’s average case count is 5,296 (average daily case count over 7 days). On Dec. 16, the CDC released two reports in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report highlighting the use of testto-stay practices used in schools to minimize absenteeism and learning loss which can occur during traditional quarantine at home. The CDC reported that the Test-to-Stay is a tool in a layered prevention strategy that includes promoting vaccination of eligible students and staff, requiring everyone age 2 and older wear a mask inside schools and facilities, keeping at least 3 feet of distance between students, screening testing, ventilation, handwashing, and staying home when sick. Additionally, the CDC recommends that everyone ages five years and older get a COVID-19 vaccine to help protect against COVID-19. Adolescents ages 16 years and older can get a booster shot at least six months after a primary series. As for San Luis Obispo County, no additional restrictions or testing has been announced at this time. Jury Convicts Kammeron Isaac Anderson He is charged with residential burglary, multiple sexual assault crimes and theft STAFF REPORT

SAN LUIS OBISPO — District Attorney Dan Dow announced that after nearly a three-week trial, a San Luis Obispo County jury found Kammeron Isaac Anderson (26) guilty of various sex crimes, including residential burglary with intent to commit rape and two counts of assault with intent to commit rape. Anderson was also convicted of petty theft. At the trial, the jury heard the testimony of three victims regarding three separate instances of sexual assault and the testimony of one additional survivor from a previous sexual battery in 2018 by Anderson. The testimony established that Anderson entered a home in Nipomo shortly before 11 p.m. on Jan. 10. When the sleep-

ing couple was awakened, Anderson was in their bedroom wearing only underwear. Once confronted Anderson grabbed his clothing from beneath their bed and fled. In a second incident, occurring Jan. 22, shortly before 3:30 a.m., Anderson forced his way into a home and physically restrained the female resident. Anderson fled when the woman’s screams alerted her husband who intervened. In a third incident, occurring around 5:30 a.m. that same day, Anderson entered a residence located approximately one mile away, removed his shoes, and entered the bedroom of another woman. He pushed her on the bed and attempted to physically restrain her when she yelled for her adult daughter, who was in the residence. Her daughter responded, and Anderson fled the crime scene after he was confronted by the women. Anderson was arrested the following day where he was also arrested for stealing a package off the porch of a residence. In a separate hearing, Superior Court

Judge Sentences Atascadero Resident Chris L. Berdoll He will serve four years and four months in prison for production and possession of child pornography STAFF REPORT

ATASCADERO — District Attorney Dan Dow announced that San Luis Obispo County Superior Court Judge Jesse Marino has sentenced Chris L. Berdoll (52) of Atascadero to serve four years and four months in state prison for his convictions of 25 felony counts of production

CHRIS L. BERDOLL

and possession of child pornography, involving 17 separate victims. The crimes took place while Berdoll, was employed as a

teacher at the Atascadero Fine Arts Academy. Berdoll’s plea of no contest to all counts was entered on Oct. 26, after Judge Marino indicated at the time of the plea that he would sentence Berdoll to serve only three years in state prison even though the Deputy District Attorney objected to such a light sentence. After reviewing the pre-sentencing report prepared by the Probation Department, the District Attorney’s sentencing memo, and hearing from several victims and their family members, Judge Marino imposed a four-year and four-month prison sentence.

At the time of the plea and again at the time of sentencing, the District Attorney’s Office objected to the three-year sentence indicated by the Judge and urged the Court to impose the maximum sentence of 19 years. The Probation Department recommended a sentence of five years and eight months. “Crimes against children must be strongly punished, particularly when committed by those with influence or in a position of authority over the victim,” said District Attorney Dan Dow. “While it is disappointing that the Judge did not impose a stronger sentence against this former

teacher, our office will continue to advocate for appropriately tough sentences against all child predators.” At the sentencing hearing, one parent highlighted that although the convictions involved specific individuals under the law, Berdoll’s predatory breach of trust worked to victimize the entire student body of Atascadero Fine Arts Academy, noting that “he hurt hundreds of victims.” This case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Danielle Baker, who is assigned to the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit, and was investigated

by the City of Atascadero Police Department with the assistance of the District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigation. ooks like we’re in for more rain, and I can’t say I mind. It really makes for a time to cozy-up to a fire in the fireplace and enjoy the “lights of Christmas.” I also mind that I want to bake even more when it’s raining and cold outside. Maybe it’s the knowledge that the oven will add more warmth to the kitchen. Our mailbox is full of Christmas greetings and the “end-ofyear appeals” from nonprofits. I only wish I could win the lottery so I could help all of them. Quota of Atascadero club members enjoyed a lovely Christmas party last week, sharing information about the success of their Hoodie Project. They partnered with Coats for Kids in October and were able to distribute new warm sweatshirts to children in need in North County schools with the help of advocates from

hot water and his minced meat patties, which would come to be called Salisbury steak. I actually like it if you drench it in gravy and eat it with a baked potato filled with butter. But I suppose that kinda defeats the whole purpose. The “slow-chewing movement” was started over a century ago by Horace Fletcher, who was denied life insurance because he was so fat. He said you should chew your food until it was in a liquid state in your mouth. His idea came to be called “Fletcherism,” and Dr. Kellogg even wrote a slow-chewing song you sang between bites. It’s been said that if you want a new idea, read an old book and many diet cookbook authors just recycled old ideas. One popular diet book in 1998 was called Lose Weight With Apple Vinegar, but Lord Byron first drenched all his food in vinegar in 1811, and he went from 194 pounds to 130 pounds but became an old sour puss in the process. You may think that Dr. Atkins came up with the high protein diet, but a London undertaker first promoted the idea in 1860! Selling diet books has been a get-rich-quick scheme for doctors ever since the first one from a commercial publisher was printed in 1950. This unleashed

a torrent of such books, including The Pritikin Program for Diet and Exercise, Sugar Busters, Protein Power, The Carbohydrate Addict’s Diet, The Scarsdale Diet (written by a man who was murdered by his lover), The South Beach Diet, The Beverly Hills Diet, and Calories Don’t Count by Herman Taller who was found guilty of mail fraud for selling worthless safflower pills through the mail. Some diet plans were downright dangerous. In 1976 osteopath Robert Linn sold drinks made from animal tendons and hides that killed an estimated 58 people. And the Cambridge Diet, which consisted of protein drinks sold through a pyramid scheme, killed 30 people. I myself have toyed with the idea of writing a diet book and have a few ideas, including the If It Tastes Good Spit It Out Diet, The Keep Your Mouth Shut Diet, Eat All You Want of Everything You Don’t Like Diet, and The Lee Pitts’ Don’t Diet But Die Happy Cookbook. the Link Family Resource Center. This month Coats for Kids distributed more new sweatshirts to 25 churches and nonprofits here in North County, who will reach other children and adults in North County. COVID has forced us to distribute in a different way than we have done for 34 years, but I think our churches, ECHO in Atascadero and Paso Robles, Loaves and Fishes, and other nonprofits dealing with families in need, will see that the warm items reach them. A big thank you goes out to everyone who participated in the outreach this year. Please continue to drop off your gently used coats, jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts at Plaza Cleaners in Atascadero and Paso Robles and Fashion Cleaners in Atascadero, as we will be collecting for the 2022 distribution. The cleaners will clean items free of charge, and a CFK volunteer will pick them up. If you served turkey for Thanksgiving, you may be ready for this week’s recipe for a baked ham. s it just me, or does it seem a lot colder this year than at this time last year? We’ve gone through the eye of the needle and come out the other side, and just like that, winter is here. I read that we had seven hours and forty-nine minutes of daylight on the winter solstice this past Tuesday. We deserve applause, as we have plunged the depth of darkness and can now celebrate the return of the light. One thing I love about the winter solstice is its magnificent reminder that the light always returns. Whatever darkness you may have experienced or are currently experiencing, please know this: the light will return.

After the longest night of the year on the solstice, we gain an average of two minutes and seven seconds more daylight each day until we finally achieve a whole extra hour of light on Jan. 18, 2022. It gets better from here. Earlier this month, I was inspired by the becoming of Moses. God informed Moses at the burning bush that he was chosen to free the enslaved from Egypt. Moses was not confident about his request, which was really more like a command than a request. He asked God who he should say sent him, and God said, “I AM WHO I AM. You are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” As I pondered this call to Moses, these words echoed in my mind: I am. I am. I am. I am that I am. Try speaking those words aloud and feel how they anchor you. Then in that state of a full realization that the great I am sent me here, I made a declaration aloud and believed that it was true: I am joy. God has sent me here to

experience joy. I then put it all together and continued repeating aloud: I am. I am. I am. I am that I am. I am. I am. I am. I am that I am. I am joy. God has sent me here to experience joy. I am. I am. I am. I am that I am. I am. I am. I am. The Presence of Spirit is palpable here. I indeed find the joy in becoming with that mantra. Do you feel it, too? You can replace the word joy with a word symbolic of your unique becoming. Repeating the mantra, “I am,” is like following a trail of breadcrumbs left for us by the Divine to lead us back home to the light within us.

On Christmas Day, while many commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, the light of the world, let us rededicate our hearts to the service of humanity. Let’s be kind and loving to one another, shine our lights, forgive, and have the faith of God as we give thanks for this precious life. You are the reason for the season. And so it is. Blessings to all of you, and happy holidays. Rev. Elizabeth Rowley Hogue is an independent columnist for The Atascadero News and Paso Robles Press; you can email her at revelizabeth@cccsl.org.

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916)939-0772 or visit this internet website http://search. nationwideposting.com/propertySearchTerms.aspx, using the file number assigned to this case CA2100286937 Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. NOTICE TO TENANT: You may have a right to purchase this property after the trustee auction if conducted after January 1, 2021, pursuant to Section 2924m of the California Civil Code. If you are an “eligible tenant buyer,” you can purchase the property if you match the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. If you are an “eligible bidder,” you may be able to purchase the property if you exceed the last and highest bid placed at the trustee auction. There are three steps to exercising this right of purchase. Tap Into Social Support to Lower Stress

DR. CINDY MAYNARD COLUMNIST

T

oday it’s more important than ever to cultivate and maintain human connections, especially as we continue to make our way out of the COVID era. Our mental and physical health depends on it. In fact, a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that nearly half of Americans say the pandemic has negatively impacted their mental health. Another study found 75 percent of people say they feel more socially isolated, 67 percent feel higher stress, 57 percent feel great anxiety, and 53 percent feel more emotionally exhausted since the pandemic outbreak. COVID has taken its toll, and it’s time to reconnect. Connection in any form, via phone, zoom, or in person, fulfills a basic human need. In fact, the best predictor of our health and happiness is the quality of our relationships. A strong social support system is essential to help us through tough times, whether you’ve had a stressful week, a recent loss, or just trying to grapple with the Covid pandemic and trying to reconnect with your loved ones. Lack of social support makes us feel lonely and isolated. We are essentially social creatures. Our ancestors hunted and traveled in social groups for a reason. Those separated from the tribe didn’t survive. But what does strong social support mean? And how can it be developed and nurtured? Sidney Cobb, a psychiatrist, says that social support is a subjective feeling in which the individual feels cared for and valued. Social support systems can consist of friends, peers, mentors, colleagues, neighbors, lay leaders, or even mental health professionals. They provide comfort and sustenance just knowing they are there when we need them and provide a critical part of our identity and self-esteem. Support networks don’t have to be formal. A quick phone call or text, a handwritten note, networking sites, volunteer

work either online or in person, joining support groups— all help develop lasting relationships with others. The benefits that come from sharing getting things off your chest, or just knowing someone else has experienced the same problem you have, impacts our health in numerous ways. We may be in this social isolation and mask-up period for a while longer. Here are some resources students in my stress management class gave for increasing social support— and it’s never too late to cultivate relationships. 1. Develop hobbies or outside interests; make gifts for others such as crafts, cards, or pillows. Share your pictures, favorite books, music, or movies with others so they have more entertainment. 2. Volunteer and help others in your community- when we reach out to others who may be even more isolated than us, it is emotionally healing. 3. Take or host a class onlineteach others how to use the latest technology so they can be a part of the mainstream. 4. AARP.org has many resources for ways to connect socially and ways to gain support. 5. Talk to people who serve you and call them by name (barista, cashier, waiter, etc.) 6. Join a gym or fitness group in person or online 7. Re-connect with old friends, classmates, or co-workers. Check-in with older adults especially. Taking time to connect with our social support groups is an investment in our health and longevity. Relationships take time and effort, but they can change our lives in the most positive way. Each wreath is a gift of appreciation from a grateful America.” WAA coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at more than 2,500 locations across the United States, at sea, and abroad. WAA is committed to teaching younger generations about the value of their freedoms and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed so much to protect those freedoms. The organization offers learning tools, interactive media projects, and opportunities for youth groups to participate in the events. They also work to create opportunities to connect “the Greatest Generation” with the “Generation of Hope,” passing on inspirational stories from World War II veterans to the leaders of the future. Christmas wreaths were purchased with the help of many local sponsors. Each one was placed at 350 marked and unmarked veteran graves at the Templeton Cemetery. Before placing the wreath,

Christmas celebration. No charge to anyone,” said Templeton Chamber of Commerce Executive Co-Chair, Kathy Nutt. The event encompassed a large chunk of Templeton’s Downtown. Starting on 8th Street at the American Legion Hall, where you could visit Santa, mine for gold with Central Coast Gold Prospectors, and shop the craft fair. “It’s great to be here in Templeton for this first Christmas [event] that’s going on today. Everybody’s having a good time,” said Cynthia Everett of the Templeton Lion’s Club. Who had a booth inside the Legion Hall. Both sides of Main Street were lit up with thousands of Christmas lights, and people filled the street as they discovered what Templeton had to offer. Almost every business participated in some way, from hot cocoa and popcorn to fun things for the kids to do. Including an emoji scavenger hunt! In regular Templeton fashion, an impromptu parade featuring pick-up trucks, UTVs, golf carts, and motorcycles started circling up and down the street as the temperature dropped and it began to get dark. “Hopefully, each year, it [Christmas on Main Street] grows. I know this is the first year, but I’m really excited to have something to do [for Christmas],” said Rob Garcia, a partner at Corvus Wealth Advisors. “We have a really great 4th of July; we should start having a really great Christmas Party.” Main Street Dance provided the entertainment down on 2nd Street, with a stage set up by the side of Griff ’s Pizzeria and Bistro. Large crowds gathered to watch the performances. Vicki Van Den Eikhof with the Templeton High School Drama Boosters was also out. Providing the community with cotton candy in exchange for donations for the drama department. “We are helping raise money for the Templeton High School Drama Department, and Martinelli’s Landscape Construction is auctioning off a Christmas Tree for us as well.” Nine local businesses participated in the Christmas Tree Auction. Each one picked a non-profit that received all of the proceeds once the tree was sold to the highest bidder. And the winner got to take home a fully decorated tree! “We decided that we’d have the tree auction so that we could give back to the non-profits in the area,” Nutt continued. “We’re very excited that we’re going to be, not only celebrating our community but also giving back.” The committee responsible for Christmas on Main Street (alongside Kathy Nutt) were: Elizabeth Covert, Aletha Ens, Sarah Magalet, and Jennifer Ecklund. Here’s hoping Christmas on Main Street will be back next year!

ZOO CONTINUED FROM A1

While the event keeps the Zoo’s animals at the forefront, there’s other magical things to experience while you’re there. Including an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus themselves. A steady line of excited kids were waiting to meet them! “This is one of those things where we like to be able to provide something special for the people. A lot of our people that are here

and at one point owned by the Peterson Family. The Peterson’s also owned a hardware store across the street--we know it now as Hewitt’s Hardware. The building has seen many phases throughout its years. It was at one time a butcher shop, a grocery, and a member of the Finley family had a girls finishing school on the South end of the building. From the 1960s to the early 1980s, the building was turned into the Iron Horse restaurant. The Iron Horse owners built the infamous bar that all Templeton locals know all too well. Then AJ Spurs came into town. Now many of us in the area probably hold the AJ Spurs days close to our hearts. It was where we went for endless campfire beans and tiny breadsticks. For the kids who grew up within its western walls, it was rootbeer floats and getting your plastic toy from the safe on your way out the door. It was birthday dinners, graduation celebrations, and everything in between. Odenwald and his friends knew what AJs meant to the community. They understood the historical value of the building. He explains, “One of the biggest motivations jumping into it [buying the building] was we didn’t want something bad to happen to this place--we appreciate the building. We felt like downtown needed to

volunteers read allowed the veteran’s name, noted the war they served in, and regiment if it was available. Wreaths were laid on veteran graves from World War I, World War II, Korean War, and more. Some of them made it back home after their war, and others didn’t. Many of the veterans were men, as expected. But some wreaths were laid on the graves of veteran women, including Clair Smith, a WWII Private First Class Infantry, and Ethel Caldwell, a WWI Army Second Luitenant, among others. Donations for the wreaths were received from

still have this restaurant as an option.” The friends, and new entrepreneurs, were a collection of people with different specialties and backgrounds. Odenwald and Wyatt Ayers are both local contractors. Seth Roberts is a professional Artist, Jeremy Limpic works in Marketing Technology, and Joe Daniels is a Journeyman Machinist. While none of them have opened and owned a restaurant before, Odenwald says that’s just fine, “We have experience with Templeton. That’s our qualification.” The owners of Templeton Mercantile have pulled in talented locals to create their vision. From contractors to tile and concrete and the menu, Odenwald said, “Everybody has chipped in. Since day one, everybody wants us to succeed. A lot of people share our vision. It’s a passion project.” The owners’ vision is to bring the Templeton Mercantile back to life. There will be three establishments within the mercantile. In December, the first phase of the mercantile opened, The Pig Iron. The Pig Iron has a California comfort food concept. Their open patio is equipped with heaters and a bonfire so customers can enjoy wintery nights without being miserably cold. Plus, with their handcrafted cocktail and coffee bar, they can whip up any drink to keep you toasty. Inside the restaurant is a fresh new

look where the building has been updated but again keeps the historical value of the place. Old photos of the Templeton Mercantile hang on the walls, and every inch of the building’s kitchen has been renovated. Something about the place just makes you smile. A main focus for the owners was to buy local and use local services. They strive to get whatever local ingredients they can from the farmers market, and why not when one of the best farmers markets in San Luis Obispo County is right up the street! Local goods are also sold in their miniature mercantile room. Big ideas are in store for the rest of the building. Ms. Finley’s Finishing School will be coming back, except this time as a cocktail lounge. And the middle of the building will be

transformed with The Engine Room, which has plans to become a renewed steakhouse. Bringing back the Templeton Mercantile has truly been a labor of Templetonion love. While we anxiously wait for the rest of the building to open, we can surely enjoy the Pig Iron and dream of what is yet to come.
