A

s we were putting the finishing touches on our January issue— pages filled with hope, fresh starts, and the promise of a new year— our community experienced a profound loss. In mid-December, our dear friend, mentor, and guiding light, Norma Moye, passed away peacefully at the age of 92.

Her passing stopped us in our tracks and reminded us that while a new year invites optimism, it can also arrive hand in hand with reflection and grief.

Now Paso Robles says goodbye to one of its most cherished community icons. For generations of Roblans, Norma was far more than a civic leader. She was the heartbeat of downtown, a tireless champion of small businesses, a guardian of our shared history, and a woman with one unwavering mission: to bring people together. Whether she was advocating for preservation, welcoming newcomers, or cheering on local causes, Norma believed community was built through connection—and she lived that belief every single day. This is our tribute to our dear friend, Norma.

Each year, we invite the mayor to share their vision for the year ahead, and Mayor John Hamon’s message feels especially timely. As Paso Robles closes a chapter in its 136th year as a city, he reflects on both progress and responsibility. Growth, while positive, brings challenges that must be thoughtfully managed to preserve the historic small-town charm we all treasure. What stood out most was his emphasis on listening—listening to residents’ hopes and frustrations, and allowing those conversations to guide decisions rooted in steady leadership, strong partnerships, and a focus on improving daily life for everyone who calls Paso Robles home.

As the pages of this year turn, we are reminded that a community’s story is never told in a single headline. It lives in the moments that connect us: celebrations and challenges, milestones and memories, quiet acts of service and joyful gatherings in the heart of town. This past year was defined by resilience, pride, and an unwavering sense of togetherness. Even in moments of loss that tested our strength, the spirit of Paso Robles never wavered.

That spirit is also reflected in those who continue to shape our future. This year, the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance named Brian and Stephy Terrizzi of Giornata Wines and Etto Pasta as the 2025 Wine Industry Persons of the Year. Deeply rooted in Italian tradition and philosophy, the Terrizzis recently celebrated 20 years of Giornata Wines while continuing to grow their pasta legacy. In many ways, they have completed the circle of the Italian family table—wine, food, and community—shared with intention and heart.

As we look ahead, we do so carrying Norma Moye’s legacy with us. She taught us that community is built one conversation, one kindness, one shared moment at a time. If we honor her by continuing to show up for one another—by listening, caring, and gathering—then her spirit will forever remain woven into the fabric of Paso Robles. And that is a legacy worth carrying into every new year.

“The best way to predict your future is to create it.” — Abraham Lincoln We’re starting off this new year with a message from Norma Moye, the executive director of The Downtown Paso Robles Main Street: “From the bottom of my heart, I want to say thank you to our members, volunteers, donors, and community participants for your support in making 2025 a very successful year for us! So, here’s to another year of fun-filled events for everyone in Downtown Paso 2026!”

The January event calendar is quiet as we prepare for all 17 events coming your way this new year.

We’re moving forward with the lessons we’ve learned, letting go of what limited us and progressing with hope and joy for the future!

2026 is the Chinese year of the Fire Horse.

There are 12 animals in the Chinese calendar, so they appear every 12 years. The Fire Horse is the exception; he appears every 60 years (last time was 1966, the next time will be 2086). The person

born in this year represents a strong personality, independence, is energetic, has confidence, and a love of freedom.

The “Super Wolf Moon” appears on January 3 as the first full moon of winter. The howl of the wolf represents an opportunity for emotional reflection, reconnecting with intuition and honoring the relationships that matter the most.

The excitement and reflection at the new year can bring emotions that cause an underlying hint of anxiety. There appear to be so many options for worry every time you turn around, so I want to share a poem I discovered by Catherine Pulsifer: Worry takes our Joy away, It clouds the gift of each new day.

The “What ifs” pull our thoughts astray, While life’s best moments slip away.

Set that heavy burden down, Don’t let it steal or make you frown.

Replace it with a hopeful view, Each moment fresh, each morning new.

Trust the path that lies ahead, Let faith and courage guide instead.

For life is brighter, peace will stay, When we chose to let worry stray.

May 2026 offer unexpected pleasures, meaningful friendships, and an everyday reason to celebrate. Be happy and grateful!

Myrtle Edgar Walton’s memories of the Estrella Adobe Church

T

he Estrella Adobe Church was a big part of the lives of the early settlers on the Estrella Plains. Construction on the church began in 1878. The Estrella Adobe Church was the first Protestant church in northern San Luis Obispo County, and was built by early pioneers who contributed labor and time for its construction.

In January of 1878, people gathered in the Estrella schoolhouse and organized the first Methodist Episcopal Class on the Estrella Plains. It was resolved at that meeting to build a church.

Water was hauled in, and bricks were made on the site. The lumber needed had to be hauled over the mountain from San Luis Obispo.

Unfortunately, dry years and poor prices for farm products slowed the work on the adobe, and it was not until 1882 that the building was plastered inside and out. The building was dedicated that year, and it was finally completed in 1885.

Pastor Brother Fields came to the church once a month as he also preached at Cayucos, Mullos, Starkey, and Creston. He was a circuit rider. He rode in a cart, or on a horse with his saddle bags behind his saddle. He called his horse “Jinny Gal,” and when he came to the Adobe Church, he spent the night at one or another of the settlers’ homes.

The church would be full on Sundays.

and sometimes in between. The organ stood in the southeast corner.

Locals enjoyed the “Band of Hope” on Sunday afternoons. The Band of Hope was a temperance organization for children and was founded in Leeds, England, in 1847 by a Baptist Minister following the death of a young man whose life was cut short by alcohol. Its objective was to teach children the importance and principles of sobriety and teetotalism.

There were also large picnics in a grove of trees by the Salinas or Estrella River. There would be a long program of speaking pieces and singing songs. It was a way to spend time

with friends and neighbors.

People came to this little church on horseback, in spring wagons, carts, big wagons, and one or two carriages. There was a long hitching pole to which horses were tied.

One time, a stranger came to church and advertised an entertainment he would give the next night. It was called a Phantasmagoria. He stood by the door calling, “Get your tickets before the rush.”

The church was filled with curious neighbors who were greatly entertained by the show.

It was a slide show, probably the early beginning of the moving picture industry.

ith profound sadness, Paso Robles bids farewell to one of its most cherished community icons, Norma Moye, who passed away peacefully on Monday, December 15, surrounded by her loving family. She was 92 years old.

For generations of Roblans, Norma was more than a civic leader — she was the heartbeat of downtown, a tireless cheerleader for small businesses, a guardian of history, and a woman whose singular goal was simple and unwavering: to bring people together.

Those who knew Norma knew she would be the first to insist that no fuss be made over her, no long tributes be written, no spotlight be shone too brightly in her direction.

She preferred to redirect praise toward her volunteers, her board members, her merchants, and her beloved downtown.

And yet, it is impossible to tell the story of Paso Robles without telling the story of Norma Moye.

A fourth-generation Paso Roblan, Norma was born and raised in the city she would spend her entire life loving, protecting, and nurturing. Her roots ran as deep as the bricks that line the downtown streets she worked so passionately to preserve. A descendant of Italian immigrants, she carried forward a legacy of hard work, resilience, and community-mindedness—values that shaped both her life and her leadership.

“I have not known anyone who worked harder for the town they loved,” said Paso Robles History Museum Board Director Grace Pucci. “Downtown Paso Robles is the success it is today due to Norma’s dedication and commitment to its ongoing success.”

Norma was a founding member of the Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association, established in 1988, and served as its executive director from 1992 until her passing. Under her steady guidance, the organization became a nationally accredited Main Street America program, recognized for excellence in preservation-based economic development and community revitalization. That distinction was more than an honor; it was a reflection of Norma’s vision for a downtown that could evolve without losing its soul.

San Luis Obispo County District 1 Supervisor, shared. “She will be remembered for her vision and strength of spirit. I will miss her kindness, warmth, and drive.”

To Norma, Main Street was not simply a commercial district — it was a family. She believed deeply that small businesses were the backbone of the community and that history, charm, and human connection mattered just as much as progress. She understood instinctively how to market a town without turning it into something unrecognizable, how to welcome visitors while still honoring the people who called Paso Robles home.

“Norma Moye was the heart and soul of downtown Paso Robles — a visionary leader whose love for this community reshaped our city’s very identity,” said Robert Covarrubias, interim CEO of the Paso Robles & Templeton Chamber of Commerce. “Through her generosity and unwavering dedication, she built a downtown that brings people together and reflects the spirit of our community.

Norma led with grace and purpose, leaving behind not just beloved traditions and revitalized spaces but a lasting sense of pride and connection. She will be deeply missed, and her legacy will continue to guide us for generations to come.”

Over the decades, Norma created and nurtured events that became woven into the fabric of community life. Most beloved among them was the Vine Street Victorian Showcase, founded in the 1980s to celebrate the historic Victorian homes of the Vine Street neighborhood. With music, carolers, festive lights, and holiday cheer, the event grew into a treasured annual tradition. This year’s 39th Annual Showcase, held December 13, just two days before her passing, drew thousands of attendees—a poignant and fitting tribute to a woman whose vision continues to gather generations together.

The Vine Street Showcase was just one chapter in a long list of community traditions Norma helped bring to life. She played a central role in establishing the downtown tree lighting at City Park—complete with its beloved songbook—along with cherished events such as the Teddy Bear Tea, the Olive Festival, the Lavender Festival, the Honey Festival, downtown art walks, seasonal merchant celebrations, and countless other festivals, markets, and community gatherings that filled the calendar year after year.

These events fostered civic pride, strengthened local businesses, and brought neighbors together across generations. Each carried Norma’s unmistakable signature: thoughtful, inclusive, detail-driven, and deeply rooted in her enduring love for Paso Robles.

“Norma Moye was fearless, strong, pioneering—and genuinely fun,” Joel Peterson, executive director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, shared. “I’ve known Norma since I was a boy through her close friendship with my grandmother, Virginia Peterson, and she was a formative presence in my life and in Paso Robles. When I moved back to Paso in 2003, Norma didn’t ask if I wanted to get involved—she told me to. She put me on the Downtown Main Street design committee and encouraged me to serve on the Planning Commission. Like so many others, when Norma asked you to do something for Paso, you didn’t ask many questions, you simply said yes.”

Through her leadership with the Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association, Norma was a driving force in shaping the heart and soul of downtown Paso Robles. She played a key role in everything from the Vine Street Showcase to the Olive and Lavender Festivals, and she took deep pride in City Park as the community’s living room. So many of our collective memories in and around downtown include Norma: Concerts in the Park, Halloween downtown, celebrations at the gazebo—she was almost always there, welcoming people and keeping a watchful eye on the place she loved. Norma fought fiercely to protect downtown Paso’s beauty, charm, and sense of place, and because of her leadership, it remains the incredible gathering spot it is today. She was always thinking about Paso—its business owners, its residents, and what it should be—through good times and hard ones. She was kind and encouraging to me and to the wine industry, grateful for the role wine has played in Paso’s growth; she often reminded me how proud my grandmother would be of what Paso Robles has become. Her smile, her laugh, and that mischievous twinkle in her eye were unmistakable.

Paso Robles is a better community because of Norma Moye, and her fierce advocacy for this town will be her lasting legacy.”

Despite her many accomplishments, Norma was famously quick to deflect credit. “I have the world’s most precious, valuable volunteers in the whole world, and that’s what accomplished all this stuff,” she often said. Her leadership style was defined by gratitude, humility, and an unshakable belief in people. She lifted others up, celebrated their successes, and made everyone feel that they belonged.

Norma’s strength and determination were perhaps most evident during times of crisis. When the devastating 6.5-magnitude San Simeon earthquake struck in 2003, causing more than $250 million in damage, downtown Paso Robles faced years of rebuilding and uncertainty.

Norma became a unifying force, helping rally merchants, residents, and volunteers to rebuild the city brick by brick. Her steady optimism and resolve reassured a shaken community that recovery was not only possible, but inevitable.

That same resilience carried the downtown through the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time when shelter-in-place orders shuttered businesses and fear loomed large, Norma was determined to keep the Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association open as a source of support and encouragement. Having lived through the Great Depression and World War II, she told the Paso Robles Magazine she had never seen anything like the pandemic — but she remained steadfast in her belief that the community would endure.

“Everybody is being as creative as they can, and I’m proud of how merchants are all hanging on, but we all have to hang on together and help each other,” she said at the time. “We can’t let this destroy us. We are Americans, and we are going to win this battle.”

Her words carried weight because they were backed by a lifetime of action.

Norma’s contributions did not go unnoticed. In 2013, she was named Pioneer Day Queen, an honor befitting someone whose life’s work embodied the spirit of Paso Robles. In 2018, the Hispanic Business Association named her Citizen of the Year, recognizing the profound impact of her advocacy for downtown and small businesses. The County of San Luis Obispo and the California State Assembly also honored her for her service. Together, these recognitions affirmed what the community already knew: that Norma Moye’s influence had helped shape one of the most vibrant and beloved Main Street towns in America.

“A force to be sure, the life of the party, and the loudest cheerleader anyone could ask for,” said Lori Woods, Pioneer Day chairman. “I was fortunate to get to know Norma through the Pioneer Day Committee, and was so excited when she was named Queen in 2013, not only to represent her Pioneer Family, but because she has done so much for Paso Robles to keep all of the traditions and history alive for our small town and along the way created so many more for future generations.

Norma is such an inspiration and truly the heart of our community.”

In April 2022, Norma received one of the most personal and enduring tributes of her life. Local artist Dale Evers created a custom archway welcoming visitors into the alley that houses the Main Street office.

The space was formally named “Norma’s Way,” a quiet but powerful acknowledgment of her lasting imprint. Evers described Norma as “the stuff of folklore,” a sentiment few would dispute.

“I was totally surprised. I was blown away,” Norma said at the time, touched by the honor. For many, the archway feels like a perfect reflection of her legacy—modest, beautiful, and rooted in place. Hard to find at first, perhaps, but impossible to forget once discovered.

Norma’s personal style was as iconic as her civic leadership. Often described as Paso Robles royalty, she was known for her red lipstick, signature hats and handbags, and the timeless charm she carried with spunk and effortless grace. In her later years, Norma was famously a bit of a “pistol”—a quality those who knew and loved her came to cherish as part of her unmistakable charm. Her home, lovingly maintained in its 1950s character, mirrored her appreciation for history and authenticity.

She lived exactly as she led — with intention, warmth, and a deep respect for the past.

Family was at the center of Norma’s life. While her public legacy is vast, those closest to her knew that her greatest pride was her children and the family she nurtured alongside her community work. As she aged, she spoke often about how family and friends became ever more precious, grounding her through decades of service and change. Her children and extended family were a constant source of love and support, standing beside her as she devoted herself to Paso Robles.

“I would not be worth anything if it wasn’t for my family and my friends,” she once said. “You have to cultivate them on your way through life.” It was advice she lived by—and passed on.

Even into her 90s, Norma showed no signs of slowing down. Her 90th birthday was marked by a surprise celebration organized by close friends, family, and colleagues. What was supposed to be a routine Main Street board meeting transformed into a joyful gathering filled with laughter, Hawaiian shirts, leis, and photos of Norma’s smiling face. “It made the journey worth it,” she said, visibly moved.

Jeffry Wiesinger, president of the Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association and owner of Jeffry’s Wine Country BBQ, hosted the celebration and reflected on her extraordinary influence. He spoke of her rare ability to walk the fine line between progress and preservation— ensuring downtown could grow while maintaining its historic character.

“Norma Moye was truly the matriarch of Paso Robles,” Wiesinger shared. “Her life of public service touched every corner of our community. She built a downtown from the ground up that is now a thriving center for shopping, dining, entertainment, and celebration.”

People will remember Norma’s name and her contributions for generations, as the heart and soul of what makes Paso Robles special.”

Norma herself reflected on her life with characteristic gratitude and joy. “I’m blessed to have my whole life,” she said. “I’ve been blessed my whole life. Believe me. I’ve had fun.”

That sense of joy—in people, in place, in possibility—is perhaps Norma Moye’s greatest gift to Paso Robles. Through festivals and board meetings, crises and celebrations, she built not just an organization, but a culture of care, collaboration, and community.

Norma Moye leaves behind a downtown forever shaped by her vision, a community strengthened by her leadership, and generations of memories created because she believed deeply in togetherness.

Her legacy lives on in every twinkling holiday light, every bustling sidewalk, every small business that thrives, and every person who feels at home in downtown Paso Robles.

“If there isn’t a ‘Main Street’ in the sky, there

will be now,” shared longtime Main Street volunteer Karyl Lammers. “Paso Robles and the Downtown Main Street Association have lost our most iconic living legend, Norma Moye—a woman who tirelessly devoted most of her life to this community and everyone in it. She was blessed with a wonderful family who was with her until the end, and she loved them above all else.

Norma had so many friends, and a quote by Rhoda Braswell says it best: ‘A million times we’ve needed you, a million times we’ve cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died.’ As the saying goes, ‘Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.’ And for all of us who were blessed to know and love her, Irving Berlin reminds us, ‘The song has ended, but the melody lives on.’”

Paso Robles has lost a matriarch, a mentor, and a friend. But Norma’s spirit—generous, determined, and endlessly devoted—will continue to guide the heart of this town for years to come.

s we begin to close this chapter in our 136th year as a city, I want to speak to you directly about where we have made meaningful progress this past year and where we are headed in 2026. Paso Robles continues to grow, which is a good thing, but change also creates challenges that must be managed responsibly to hold on to our historic small-town charm that we all love so much.

We are doing it by listening to our citizens. Countless residents shared their hopes and frustrations with me, and those conversations have indeed shaped decisions made with steady city council leadership, strong partnerships, and a clear focus on what improves daily life for all who live here.

2025: A Year of Real, Measurable Accomplishment This past year was one of the most productive in my 19-year memory of being a member of your City Council. We saw major milestones in housing, public safety, infrastructure, parks, and city services — all achieved by our dedicated city staff. This is the kind of professional work that strengthens Paso Robles not only today but also set us up for a better quality-of-life decades ahead.

The year began with two major affordable-housing victories: the completion of Sunrise Villas, now home to 69 families, and the grand opening of River Walk Terrace, providing 79 affordable senior units 18 | PasoRoblesMagazine.com

— both developed through close partnerships with the Paso Robles Housing Authority, which was formed in 1942. These projects are fully occupied and function exactly as intended: safe, stable homes for working families and seniors who deserve the chance to stay in their community.

We also saw the first homes completed in the long-planned Olsen– South Chandler Specific Plan, finally bringing to life a project that will eventually deliver more than 1,200 units, parks, trails, and open space.

Paso Robles was one of only two cities in San Luis Obispo County to grow in 2025 and our cities total taxable assessed property value grew by 5% which outpaced county-wide growth.

Recreation and neighborhood amenities saw major wins as well.

Royal Oak Meadows Park reopened after a full overhaul, giving families a modern playground, shaded picnic areas, improved courts, and a clean, inviting space. Sherwood Park entered a new era with construction beginning on its seven new lighted pickleball courts, restrooms, expanded parking, and shaded gathering areas. We also launched the Request for Proposal (RFP) process to completely redevelop the Sherwood sports fields — an investment long overdue and deeply needed. We expect the Sherwood redesign to complete its community review phase next year, with budgeting and construction planning to follow shortly after.

On mobility and roadwork, we made substantial progress.

Thanks to voter-supported Measures J-20 and I-24, as well as state and regional grants, we tripled our annual road-repair budget. We completed the Sherwood Road segment with two roundabouts, improved sidewalks, and a multi-use trail. We initiated neighborhood rehabilitation in the Sunset, Panorama, and Crestline areas, expanded slurry seal work on the west side, and modernized the 12th & Railroad parking lot with ADA spaces, EV stations, and upgraded lighting. After years of groundwork, the 24th Street Railroad Bridge project has secured $16.7 million in funding, finally putting construction in reach. When completed, the project will finally remove a major traffic bottleneck and significantly improve pedestrian safety around the fairgrounds.

Public safety advanced significantly. We broke ground on the new Paso Robles Public Safety Training Center on Union Road behind Fire Station 3 — funded through Congressman Panetta’s federal appropriation and Measure J-20 — giving our Police and Fire departments a modern, centralized training facility.

We launched our new Paramedic Squad Program to improve medical response times, expanded our Community Action Team to better address homelessness and behavioral-health calls, and engaged in the county’s first competitive ambulance procurement process in decades.

Utilities and environmental services also made big strides.

Our wastewater plant earned “Small Treatment Plant of the Year,” and the city completed the full conversion of nearly 11,000 water meters to advanced wireless AMI technology, allowing residents to monitor usage and detect leaks in real time. The city’s 4-megawatt solar farm saved us more than $400,000 this year, and our riverbed goat-grazing fire-prevention program earned statewide recognition. A $50,000 grant will expand riverbed cleanup and the Blue Bag trash-pickup program.

City Hall modernization also began, improving customer-service areas, workspace efficiency, and public meeting facilities. These upgrades will provide more efficient staff workspace and allow residents to complete more services on a single visit and shorten waiting times for permits, records, and in-person support. We appointed a new city manager, Chris Huot, and welcomed Melissa Bailey as our new city librarian, along with Ashlee Hernandez, our first-ever homeless services manager, which was created as part of the city's strategic plan to address homelessness. These new staff members join your nearly 300 other public employees who know Paso Robles well and are committed to accountable, transparent public service.

2025 community celebrations from the New Year’s Eve Bonfire, the Independence Day at Barney Schwartz Park, the Downtown Park Lighting Ceremony, and the Vine Street Victorian Showcase drew thousands and upholds the values that make this town so special.

2025 was a year when Paso Robles did not just talk about progress — we delivered it. And that work now sets the foundation for an even more focused and determined year of growth ahead.

Looking Ahead to 2026: A Realistic and Ambitious Vision As we move into 2026, we are not slowing down. We are focused on using tax dollars wisely by doing the practical work that keeps Paso Robles safe, livable, and financially sound.

Housing: we will continue supporting both market-rate and

affordable housing, with a strong emphasis on balanced growth, which will help give our children the opportunity to afford a home and be able to work, live, and play in the town they grew up in. As the Olsen–South Chandler area expands, we will ensure infrastructure, parks, trails, and traffic planning stay ahead of development — not behind it.

Roads & Transportation: With our bolstered road budget, we will complete more neighborhood rehabilitation, improve major corridors, and move the 24th Street Railroad Bridge into construction. We will keep pushing for traffic solutions that prioritize safety, flow, and long-term durability.

Public Safety: Safety and security will always be our highest priority. The new training center will move toward completion, our paramedic squad will continue to improve medical response times, and we will strengthen wildfire-mitigation and emergency-preparedness programs. We will also expand mental-health and homelessness coordination with county, state, and federal resources to reduce impacts on neighborhoods, businesses, and public spaces.

Parks & Recreation: Sherwood Park’s improvements will continue through 2026, and the redesign of the sports fields will move through planning and community review. We will also keep focusing on youth programming, senior services, and creating more accessible, well-maintained public spaces.

City Services & Sustainability: We will reinvest savings earned from solar power generation to reduce cost of operations, continue wise stewardship of our Paso Robles Water basin resource, modernize customer services, and invest in clean-energy and fire-prevention strategies that save money and protect our community.

Economic Stability: We will continue the work toward acquiring our future Paso Robles Spaceport license that will drive innovation, attract high-value aerospace investment, create skilled local jobs, and position our community as a regional hub for commercial spaceflight, research, and advanced aviation technologies. Our city government is financially stable by living within its means. Our general fund reserves are currently more than fully funded at 33% of annual revenue and we continue to save for long-term liabilities such as (PERS) the Public Employee RetirementsSystem.

A Community Moving Forward Together We have lots of work to do — no question. But Paso Robles is certainly moving in the right direction. Our departments are performing at a high level, and our many long-term projects are finally turning into results you can see and feel. It is important to thank our highly valued staff during this time of the year for their dedication and professionalism in the work that they do for all of us and our wonderful home we call Paso Robles.

In closing, I want to thank you for your trust, your patience, and your support for me as your mayor and for my fellow City Council colleagues in allowing us to make Paso Robles stronger every year. I am proud of what we have achieved as a great city of nearly 32,000 souls in 2025, and I’m even more determined about what we can build together in 2026.

This past year was one defined by resilience, pride, and an unwavering sense of togetherness. From historic achievements and beloved traditions to moments of loss that tested our strength, the spirit of our community never wavered.

Month by month, these stories reveal who we are: a region rooted in agriculture and innovation, enriched by the arts, shaped by family and faith, and sustained by the people who show up—again and again—for one another. We honored pioneers and visionaries, celebrated graduates and volunteers, raised a glass to winemakers and brewers, and gathered in parks, fairgrounds, classrooms, and downtown streets to mark life’s milestones both big and small.

This Year in Review is more than a look back; it is a tribute to the heartbeat of the North County. As we reflect on the moments that shaped the past 12 months, we do so with gratitude—for the people, places, and shared experiences that continue to make this community not just where we live, but where we belong.

January: Kicking Off with Momentum and Milestones The year burst into life with the city-organized New Year's Eve celebration in the downtown park, where families and friends gathered under the stars for a bonfire, music, and a sense of renewed hope. In his annual message, Mayor John Hamon looked back on an eventful 2024 while looking forward, highlighting key strides in infrastructure and community safety.

Ongoing street maintenance projects continued apace, but the spotlight shone on the launch of the long-awaited Creston Road Corridor Improvements, funded by voter-approved local sales tax measures E-12 and J-20, alongside regional and state support. Excitement built around recreational enhancements, including the February opening of the Barney Schwartz Pump Track and approvals for a new pickleball complex at Sherwood Park. Adding an international flair, the British Royal Air Force returned for training exercises at the Paso Robles Airport, reminding us of our city's role on a global stage.

The month also carried notes of honor and gratitude: The City Council paid tribute to the late Mayor Steve Martin, while commending staff for awards earned on the Golden Hill/ Union Road Roundabout. Federal support bolstered public safety with Congressman Jimmy Panetta securing $500,000 for the Paso

Robles Regional Fire and Emergency Services Training Facility at the upcoming Fire Station 3 on Union Road.

Community spirit warmed hearts at the 7th Annual Running Chicken Fun Run at Santa Margarita Lake. Over 500 participants laced up for the 5K or 10K, honoring the lives of sisters Brittni "Bitti" and Brynn Frace. Runners like Atascadero local Lori Bagby raved about the sense of togetherness, marking another successful growth year for this heartfelt event.

February: Honoring Pillars of Wine, Youth, and Wellness February brought a wave of recognition for those who embody Paso Robles' enduring legacy. The Paso Robles & Templeton Chamber of Commerce named Gary Eberle— affectionately known as the Godfather of modern winemaking—the 2024 Roblan of the Year. A pioneer whose vision shaped our wine country, Eberle's humility shone through as he deferred credit to others, even as now former Chamber CEO Gina Fitzpatrick praised his leadership, generosity, and wit. Chosen from monthly honorees, this award celebrated his lifelong contributions through community action and outreach.

Beautification efforts were also in the spotlight, with the Chamber awarding the Boys & Girls Club of Mid Central Coast

March: Celebrating the Best of North SLO County March was all about shining a light on excellence with the annual Best of North SLO County Special Issue. Readers and residents voted to highlight their favorite local North SLO County businesses, events, and individuals—the unsung heroes who make our community truly special. From beloved eateries to standout services, this tradition reaffirmed what we love most about home.

May: Brewing Legacy, Honoring Mothers, and Revving Up History May poured out stories of evolution and reverence. At Firestone Walker Brewing Company, second-generation leader Nick Firestone stepped fully into the helm, blending his Marine service background with a passion for craft beer. From teenage floor-sweeping days to championing sustainability—like CO₂ recapture—and community hits like 805 Beer, Nick is crafting a modern legacy while gearing up for the 2025 Invitational Beer Festival.

Mothers were celebrated with tender shares of cherished family moments, reminding us of the quiet strength anchoring our lives.

History roared to life over Memorial Day weekend. The Best of the West Antique Equipment Show at the Santa Margarita Ranch honored 100 years of Caterpillar machinery with tractor parades, steam engines, and interactive exhibits—a vibrant nod to agricultural heritage hosted by the Paso Robles Pioneer Day Committee and Rossi Foundation.

Chrome shined in the sun at the 17th Annual Golden State Classics Car Show in Downtown City Park, drawing over 300 vintage vehicles, hot rods, and muscle cars. Families enjoyed kids' activities, raffles, and awards, courtesy of the Golden State Classics Car Club.

Finally, Memorial Day reflections urged pause amid gatherings, tracing roots to post-Civil War acts of reconciliation and honoring those who sacrificed for our freedoms.

April: Roots, Romance, and Rescue Spring bloomed with deep-rooted history as the Dusi family marked 100 years of farming Zinfandel in Paso Robles.

Italian immigrants Sylvester and Caterina Dusi planted the first vines in 1925 on Ramada Drive, and today, winemaker Janell Dusi carries the torch. The family released Cent’Anni, a limited jug-bottled commemorative wine honoring their greatgrandparents—a toast to tradition and innovation.

Love was in the air with features on North County's breathtaking wedding venues. Vineyard sunsets, elegant resorts, rustic ranches, and downtown twinkles offered perfect backdrops for "I do" moments, catering to every dream wedding style.

Compassion took center stage with spotlights on two impactful animal rescues.

Woods Humane Society, founded in 1955, has evolved into the county's premier shelter, while Paso-based Central Coast Herding Dog Rescue, started by Wendy Hoffman in 2007, rehomes nearly 300 herding breeds annually, giving abandoned dogs second chances.

June: Roots, Creativity, and Family Adventures June arrived with the gentle warmth of early summer, a perfect backdrop for honoring the quiet strength of fathers and the boundless curiosity of children. Celebrating Dads shone a light on local fathers whose guidance and love shape the next generation, reminding us that fatherhood is one of life’s most profound legacies.

Families flocked outdoors for Kid-Friendly Fun in North County, exploring lavender fields at Hambly Farms, feeding red pandas at the Charles Paddock Zoo, splashing at The Ravine Waterpark, or climbing vintage fire trucks at the Paso Robles Children’s Museum. These simple joys turned ordinary weekends into cherished memories.

The creative pulse of the region beat strongly as Where Art Comes Alive invited residents and visitors into pottery studios, galleries, and workshops across our towns. Art became a bridge—connecting makers, collectors, and dreamers in a shared celebration of imagination.

In Atascadero, Farron Elizabeth marked a decade of growth, grit, and giving back. Her boutique’s 10-year anniversary open house was

Tom Maas Clubhouse on Oak Street for its transformative impact. Born from a need for more space and generous donations—including a pivotal gift from the late Tom Maas and his wife Kathleen—the clubhouse stands as a beacon of heritage preservation and youth empowerment.

The wine world's unsung heroes took center stage when the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance honored Randy and Jenny Heinzen as 2024 Wine Industry Persons of the Year.

Jenny's expertise in vineyard and winery transactions has reshaped thousands of acres, while Randy's innovative sustainable practices at Vineyard Professional Services elevate the entire AVA. Their gala recognition underscored the forward-thinking stewardship defining our region.

As resolutions took root, local health experts shared tips for holistic wellness, inspiring residents to embrace exercise, supplements, and new routines for a healthier 2025.

July: Graduation Dreams and Fairground Magic July burst onto the scene with the triumphant sound of graduation caps soaring skyward.

At Paso Robles High School, the Class of 2025 celebrated under Bearcat banners, led by brilliant Valedictorian Ava Friedling (bound for UCLA and a future in medicine) and Salutatorian Hannah Bourgault (heading to Cal Poly for Forest and Fire Science). Just days earlier, Templeton High School sent its Class of 2025 soaring with Eagle pride, inspired by Valedictorian Spencer Sanders and Salutatorian Brodie Rossel, while honoring standout students like Luke Thompson, Keani Neuhs, Charlie Dahlen, and Kennedy McAdoo.

The heartbeat of summer quickened as the California Mid-State Fair galloped in from July 16 through 27 with the theme “Off to the Races.” Thrilling rides, classic fair food, and local talent filled the grounds, while young women vied for the crown in the 2025 Miss California Mid-State Fair Queen pageant.

Wine lovers raised glasses at the SLO County Wine Awards on July 18, recognizing excellence across the region. Honorees included Winemaker of the Year, Winegrape Grower of the Year, Industry Person of the Year, Winery of the Year, and a Lifetime Achievement Award, underscoring why San Luis Obispo County remains a world-class wine destination.

The collapse of its century-old silo left a scarred skyline, yet the Jermin family—stewards for generations—vowed that this was not an end, but a new chapter of resilience.

The community also mourned the passing of Thomas Robert “Bob” Chute Jr., founder of Paso Robles Magazine. For over four decades, Bob poured his passion for storytelling into local journalism, launching the magazine in 2001 from his spare bedroom. His legacy lives in every page we publish and every story we tell.

Amid the bustle, the Paso Robles Rotary Club hosted its 26th Annual Winemakers’ Cookoff, blending gourmet dishes, local wines, and friendly competition to raise funds for scholarships.

September: Honoring Agriculture and Community Spirit September paid tribute to the backbone of our region. At the Mid-State Fair’s Cattlemen and Farmers Day, Marty Settevendemie was named Agriculturalist of the Year, Debbie Arnold earned CattleWoman of the Year, and Jill Twisselman Heely received Cattleman of the Year. These awards celebrated decades of stewardship in an industry that has driven SLO County’s economy past $1 billion in annual crop and livestock value for three consecutive years.

Local nonprofits took center stage as vital threads in our community fabric. Organizations like the Committee for Atascadero Public Schools (CAPS), Friends of the Paso Robles Library, Central Coast Herding Dog Rescue, Woods Humane Society, Honor Flight Central Coast California, Paso Robles Children’s Museum, and the Downtown Paso Robles Main Street Association quietly strengthened education, animal welfare, veteran support, childhood wonder, and historic preservation.

Music and history harmonized at the 20th Jubilee Paderewski Festival, celebrating both the virtuoso pianist’s 165th birthday and Paso Robles’ enduring bond with Ignacy Jan Paderewski.

October: Pioneer Pride and Harvest Joy October carried the rumble of antique tractors and the scent of fall harvests. Paso Robles joyfully marked its 95th Pioneer Day on October 11, blending longstanding traditions with fresh energy. The parade down Spring Street brimmed with horse-drawn wagons, marching bands, and community floats, while City Park echoed with the Whiskerino Contest, family reunions, and the famous free bean feed.

Leading the celebration were Queen Lorraine Jespersen Cagliero, whose deep ranching roots and civic service embodied Pioneer spirit; Grand Marshal Gary Davies Tucker, representing generations of North County families; and Belle Olivia Andersen with her five attendants, each carrying forward cherished legacies.

A preview of the 1st Annual Christmas Cookie Exchange at the newly opened Ava Hotel, hosted by Just Baked, offered a taste of what’s to come—complete with sweet treats, live music, and festive community cheer— hinting at a holiday tradition in the making.

North County embraced the spirit of giving through turkey trots around Atascadero Lake, the whimsical Turkeymania, the Day of Giving, and Paso Robles’ longstanding community Thanksgiving meal at Centennial Park—hosted

December: Celebration Amid Resilience As December’s lights twinkled, the call to shop local rang clearer than ever. Supporting North County small businesses during the holidays wasn’t just a tradition—it sustained the heartbeat of our downtowns and neighborhoods.

The Paso Robles–Templeton Chamber of Commerce closed the year with heartfelt honors. The Jermin family of Templeton Feed & Grain was named 2025 Citizens of the Year, recognizing nearly 80 years of service, dedication, and perseverance through both triumph and tragedy following the devastating July 4 fire that claimed the iconic silos.

In the wake of the Templeton Feed & Grain fire, Templeton Landfill, owned by Chicago Landfill and ABI Engineering, were named Business of the Year for their extraordinary response and support—proving that community strength shines brightest in challenging times.

2025 Wine Industry Persons of the Year Brian and Stephy Terrizzi of Giornata Wines

aso Robles Wine Country Alliance has named Brian and Stephy Terrizzi of Giornata Wines and Etto Pasta as the 2025 Wine Industry Persons of the Year winners. In everything they do, the Terrizzis remain deeply rooted in Italian traditions and philosophies. After recently celebrating 20 years of Giornata Wines and continuing to grow their pasta empire, they have closed the circle of everything needed to complete the Italian family table.

“Brian and Stephy personify the spirit of collaboration that defines Paso Robles Wine Country,” said Joel Peterson, executive director of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance. “They back give selflessly to the Paso Robles community while elevating the region through their exceptional winemaking and commitment to authentic Italian cuisine. We look forward to honoring them and celebrating their well-deserved recognition at our Annual Gala in January.”

Growing up, wine was the furthest thing from Stephanie’s world. Instead, she grew up in Illinois surrounded by farmland, learning how to rope cattle, milk cows, and nurture a garden. After high school, Stephanie earned her degree in biochemistry with plans to attend medical school. But something inside her knew that wasn’t the right path. After speaking with a mentor who asked her a question she’d never considered — what she hated most in the world — Stephanie realized her answer was simple: ‘Chicago snow and freezing cold weather.’ That moment set her on a new path forward.

She was first introduced to California wine in 1996 while working at her first job at a wine bar in Illinois. That introduction piqued her curiosity into the industry and led her to head out to the California Wine Country in 1998 with nothing but her car and job.

In Santa Rosa, she honed her skills working in fine dining and exploring local wines, studying under industry leaders like Dan Kosta of Kosta Browne. Her curiosity evolved into hands-on viticulture when she enrolled in classes at Santa Rosa Community College and later pursued a master’s in viticulture at Fresno State. There, she embraced sustainable farming, learning regenerative practices that would shape her career.

While at Fresno State in 2004, Stephanie repeatedly introduced herself to incoming student Brian Terrizzi, not realizing he was the same person each time because

he looked completely different on every encounter. Their relationship shifted when they later worked together on an Enology Society assignment and became study partners.

During one study session, Brian cooked her an Italian dinner and opened a bottle of wine, revealing their shared love of Italian culture and sparking a connection that quickly deepened. By January 2005, they were engaged and planning their first trip to Italy — hoping to stay there and never return.

"We are truly honored to be recognized as the Paso Wine Industry Person of the Year," Stephanie said. "It is a gift to wake up each day in this vibrant community and make our ambitions a reality. We have a dedicated and resilient team beside us, and we can accomplish almost anything together. We love what we do."

Brian grew up in a predominantly German neighborhood in Cincinnati but was deeply connected to his Italian heritage through his grandparents, who had emigrated from Sicily. Through their family stories of the homeland, a deep love and appreciation for Italian culture was embedded in Brian. He spent many weekends with them, learning Italian culture and cuisine, especially from his grandmother, a talented cook who taught him traditional recipes and techniques while also exploring French cooking. Her handwritten cookbooks remain a cherished influence.

Brian’s love of Italian wines and gastronomy was further shaped by his stepfather, who maintained a cellar of around 8,000 bottles and a library of wine history. Brian explored the collection, tasting vintages from Burgundy, Bordeaux, Italy, and Australia, developing his palate and gravitating toward Italian varietals. His mother encouraged his culinary curiosity, sending him to a week-long class at the Culinary Institute in Napa, where he honed professional skills and deepened his knowledge of regional Italian foods.

After college and starting a career in finance in Cincinnati, Brian seized an opportunity to transfer to the San Francisco Bay Area, placing him near California wine country. On weekends, he explored Napa, Sonoma, and Anderson Valley, developing industry contacts, most importantly with Jeff Cohen, winemaker at Rosenblum Cellars. After a chance encounter at a party, Jeff invited Brian to work the harvest, prompting him to resign from finance and fully commit to winemaking. Brian’s first day

racking barrels and tasting wine confirmed his passion and set him on a new career path.

A few months later, Brian traveled alone to Florence to study Italian language, wine, and cuisine, visiting over twenty Tuscan wineries and absorbing the practices of local viticulturists. An internship with Paolo De Marchi allowed him to work in a disciplined Italian winemaking environment, refining his palate and deepening his understanding of balance, complexity, and table wines.

He realized that Italian wines are meant to complement meals, with regional varietals developed in harmony with local cuisine. These experiences inspired Brian to focus on producing wines in California that reflected Italian traditions, ultimately leading him to pursue a formal education in enology at Fresno State.

"We were welcomed into this community when we arrived 20 years ago by so many people and quickly grew to love it here," Brian said. "This award is very gratifying and gives us even more incentive to keep building something unique in our community. It's a dream to have a small family business that gets so much support andwe treasure everyone who has helped us to be successful. We strive to do a little better every day and believe that the best is yet to come. " 2005 was a landmark year for Brian and Stephanie. They married, learned Stephanie was pregnant with twins, and committed to starting their own winery, naming it Giornata.

The couple traveled across California to choose the perfect location and began researching Italian grape varieties and clones. That year, they harvested Nebbiolo grapes in Paso Robles, and Brian crafted his first barrel in a backyard shed in Fresno. On November 17, their twin daughters were born, and both celebrated their Fresno State graduations — Stephanie in viticulture in June and Brian in enology in December.

In 2006, the couple moved to San Luis Obispo County to focus on their wine ventures, officially founding both Giornata and Broadside wineries. Giornata, meaning

“a day’s work,” became their small, family-run winery dedicated to producing classic Italian varietals — including Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Aglianico, and Barbera — using traditional Italian winemaking methods adapted to California. Stephanie focused on vineyard management, emphasizing precise harvests, organic, and sustainable practices, and low-intervention winemaking, while Brian refined the Italian-style production techniques he had studied firsthand in Italy.

Brian also co-founded Broadside Winery, producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Merlot, which allowed them to fund Giornata and gain critical business experience. Broadside quickly gained acclaim, appearing in the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Times.

This experience reinforced Brian’s passion for small-batch, Italian-inspired wines and eventually turn his focus to Giornata. Over the years, Giornata wines have received national and international recognition, including multiple invitations to pour Nebbiolo in Italy and praise from prominent wine critics.

The Terrizzis’ love for Italian culture inspired them to create Etto Pastificio in 2019, a fresh pasta and Italian market in Tin City. The market features their handmade pasta, organic ingredients, sauces, breads, cheeses, and charcuterie, with Giornata wines available for pairing. Etto also serves the local community, providing pasta to schools and restaurants throughout San Luis Obispo County. They completed construction of their pasta factory a couple of years ago to keep up with demand and recently started offering public tours. They even opened a restaurant a few years ago called Etto Pasta Bar, right next to the market, that features local ingredients and an Italian sensibility in the kitchen.

ctober 2025 marked 19 years of empowering movement at North County Pilates (NCP) and a brandnew chapter under the leadership of its new owner, Kelli Poist, a passionate, encouraging, and deeply enthusiastic Pilates instructor dedicated to helping people feel strong and capable in their bodies.

Kelli officially took ownership of the Atascadero studio at the end of September 2025, but her roots in Pilates stretch back more than two decades. A lifelong athlete with a background in dance, gymnastics, and competitive swimming, she began teaching movement at just 16 years old.

s we welcome 2026, I reflect on my 40 years of public service and what they mean. Public service provides vital functions like water, public safety, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. It upholds our democratic values and connects citizens to their government. Public servants should remain politically neutral and offer unbiased advice to everyone they serve. Throughout my career, I’ve seen colleagues in the public sector build community and economic stability, respond to emergencies, and address key social issues. My motivation has always been to create a positive impact in my community and work toward the greater good. Public service is a privilege — an opportunity to help shape a brighter future — and it plays a crucial role in our local communities, the state, and the country.

It’s about recognizing the interconnectedness of our shared humanity and stepping up to make a difference.” — Jon/Moss MC/MPA 2024, U.S. Navy Special Operations (EOD) Officer I became a teacher because a public servant, a teacher, had a very positive impact on my life. Brother Jerome Gorg, a Marianist dedicated to service, encouraged me to work in the math lab at my high school to tutor other students for credit and later as a volunteer.

He often quoted Ben Franklin, “Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn.” Brother Jerry involved me in mathematics and teaching. He used a Socratic method, responding to questions with other questions to make me think. During one phone

call, he reminded me of my service and asked why I kept volunteering after finishing my required elective hours. I said I enjoyed helping others and that tutoring helped me grow in my love for learning.

Brother Jerry said, “I think you might have a calling to serve.”

In dedicating my career to public service, I have worked as a custodian, teaching assistant, classroom teacher, college instructor, and administrator. The first 10 years of my teaching career were spent serving English language learners and students living in poverty.

The past 30 years have been spent as an administrator dedicated to promoting quality services. Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Public service is a place to promote social justice in a democratic society. It is the responsibility of all concerned about our country to encourage highly qualified and dedicated public sector employees. The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education has written and received multiple grants that offer scholarships, program subsidies, and tuition reimbursements to support the recruitment of public-sector employees.

The San Luis Obispo County Office of Education collaborates with all districts, charters, and childcare centers to offer scholarships to pre-apprentices, apprentices, interns, substitutes, and current employees interested in further training. Those interested in public sector jobs within our local school districts — such as administration, classroom services, fiscal services, human resources, IT, maintenance and operations, support services, and transportation — should consider the support we provide. Our taxpayer-funded system determines who we train and hire in our organizations. We should emphasize the importance of highly qualified, locally trained employees. INSIDE THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE AFTER A DEFINING YEAR

I

’ll start this column the same way I always begin the first one of the year. By wishing everyone a happy, safe, and prosperous 2026!

And as we close out another year, I’m reminded of something that holds true every year in public safety. We don’t get to choose the challenges that come our way, but we do choose how we meet them. This past year brought moments of danger, loss, resilience, and accomplishment.

Through it all, your Sheriff ’s Office remained committed to protecting and serving every community in San Luis Obispo County with professionalism, compassion, and resolve. And with that, I present to you my eighth annual State of the Sheriff ’s Office.

On January 29, that commitment was tested when deputies responded to reports of shots heard near Templeton High School. During the investigation, detectives determined the suspect opened fire on the first arriving patrol unit, striking the vehicle multiple times. Fortunately, neither of the deputies inside was injured. Seconds later, a second patrol unit arrived and one of our deputies engaged with the suspect, who was struck by gunfire. Deputies immediately rendered medical aid until paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he remained in stable condition. The suspect was later booked on two counts of attempted murder. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers deputies face every day.

Shortly after, on April 3, our detectives brought an end to a sophisticated auto-theft scam operating throughout California.

When deputies stopped a vehicle

carrying three individuals, they found something else. Inside the vehicle, detectives discovered oil containers consistent with the “Oil in the Engine” scam. A scheme in which scammers secretly pour oil onto a seller’s engine during a test drive, causing smoke and panic in order to purchase the vehicle at a drastically reduced price. Between November 2024 and March 2025, we identified more than 20 victims in San Luis Obispo County, with losses nearing $60,000. This case highlighted both the importance of community reporting and the dedication of our investigators, who disrupted a criminal operation linked to Romanian nationals working across the state.

Our deputies also responded to a tragic deputy-involved shooting in Los Osos on July 2, following a report of suspicious circumstances and concerns for a woman’s safety.

Deputies arriving on scene, located the male subject, a 40-year-old from Chowchilla, who presented a handgun as they made contact.

Both deputies discharged their service weapons, and the subject was struck. Despite immediate radio calls for medical assistance and lifesaving efforts from deputies, the man was pronounced

deceased at the scene. No deputies were injured. Incidents like this are heart-wrenching for everyone involved, and our office remains committed to thorough investigations, transparency, and support for both the community and our personnel.

Two weeks later, we assisted Templeton Fire in identifying four boys connected to the Templeton Feed and Grain fire on South Main Street on July 4. One of the juveniles was determined to have started the fire. Our findings were turned over to Templeton Fire and the District Attorney’s Office for review of potential arson charges.

One of the most emotionally challenging case of the year was the disappearance of Isabel Lucas Velasco of Coalinga. After she was reported missing on September 13, our Detective Division worked relentlessly, ultimately coordinating a large-scale search effort alongside Fresno County.

On October 11, a body believed to be Isabel was located along Highway 198. The case was ruled a homicide, resulting in the arrests of a man and his brother. Our hearts remain with Isabel’s family, and I could not be more proud of the unwavering effort from everyone

who worked on that case.

Finally, 2025 saw the opening of the new Public Safety Communications Center — a major milestone for our county and the future of emergency response. This 20,000-squarefoot facility brings together the Sheriff ’s Office and Cal Fire/SLO County Fire under one roof, replacing two aging dispatch centers that had long outgrown their capacity. The center will serve as the central hub for 911 and emergency communications, equipped with a 140-foot communications tower, advanced dispatch technology, and expanded room for future growth. Together, these improvements greatly enhance how we coordinate responses to emergencies of every scale.

I’ll close this year’s column the same way I did last year, because the message still matters. I’m grateful for the men and women of the Sheriff ’s Office who work every day to protect our county, and I’m grateful for you, our community, for helping make San Luis Obispo County a place we’re proud to call home. VOICES OF THE VFW How Paso Robles Veterans are serving those who served LEO CASTILLO VFW POST 10965 COMMANDER

A

s we kick off the new year, we not only look at the typical New Year’s resolutions that we all try to adhere to, but we also recognize the importance of choosing goals that are sustainable. For many of us, remaining consistent with resolutions can be challenging. For veterans, routine is ingrained in us; however, helping ourselves — or asking for support — isn’t always our strongest suit. All that said, we still try to look ahead, remain consistent, focus on sustainability in our emotions and mental well-being, and stay grateful for another day on this earth.

When it comes to routine and consistency, the VFW focuses its efforts on our standard poppy drives twice a year, our veteran and memorial services held at the Paso Robles Cemetery, our monthly meetings, and, of course, our infamous Taco Takeovers. Our Taco Takeovers are monthly events where we partner with a local veteran-owned business and serve free street tacos to veterans and active-duty service members. Civilians are welcome to indulge in some tasty carnitas street tacos as well, as long as they make a donation of $1–$100 (we let you decide what the tacos are worth) and support the veteran-owned business hosting us. These monthly events have taken place at locations like Volatus Winery, Cal Coast Beer Company, Virtus Jiu-Jitsu Gym, and many more. All proceeds go directly back to supporting our local veteran population and programs. We hope to see you at our next Taco Takeover — just follow us on Facebook or Instagram for the next location.

Now that the hunger has set in from all the taco talk, let’s shift to our Adopt-A-Unit program, because we do love to feed our service members. The VFW is expected to adopt local military units when possible to show support for those who serve. Our post has adopted three units: the United States Army Signal Activity (USASA), the Regional Training Site–Maintenance (RTSM), and the Garrison Training Center (GTC), all located at Camp Roberts. We have hosted holiday parties, coordinated Thanksgiving meals for lowerenlisted service members and their families, and provided monetary support on a case-bycase basis. We continue this mission throughout the year, and you may have seen some of these active members in the Pioneer Day Parade or providing military honors at local veterans’ funerals. These members of our adopted units are integral to the VFW’s success, and we are grateful to have them.

Lastly, as we look

ahead to 2026, we are focusing our efforts on feeding the homeless through ECHO in Paso Robles. One of our own members, Paul Hill, wanted to do something to support the homeless community, knowing that many veterans are among them. It began with a spaghetti dinner and has grown into something we plan to continue. After our December meeting, VFW members voted to carry on this effort and established a standing date where the VFW covers the cost of food and serves meals at the ECHO shelter in Paso Robles.

All these efforts, events, and community connections help us veterans “keep busy” — as my wife likes to remind me that I do a bit too much. The reality is that staying busy is therapeutic for many of us and helps us work through the emotional challenges we may face.

Maintaining routine, keeping busy, and pursuing a sustainable, healthy way of living are the only New Year’s resolutions I’m personally focusing on, and I hope my brothers and sisters in the veteran community will do the same.

Paderewski Festival marks milestone year

aso Robles honored its historic connection to Ignacy Jan Paderewski earlier this month, marking both the world-renowned pianist’s 165th birthday and the 20th anniversary of the modern Paderewski Festival. The fourday celebration brought packed performances, youth showcases, and community gatherings that organizers said reflected a strong post-pandemic resurgence.

Festival Board President Marjorie Hamon said this year felt especially meaningful.

"I'm honored to be able to be the president of this festival. I have the hardest working board that I've ever been involvedon," she told Paso Robles Press Magazine. "I'm honored and I think being the 20th year, it was a very successful year for us. It's been a tough haul coming back from COVID." Festivities opened Thursday afternoon, Nov. 6, at the Paderewski monument in Paso Robles City Park, where the Paso Robles High School marching ensemble performed in celebration of Paderewski’s birthday. The group played three pieces for attendees and parkgoers who stopped to watch.

"It was very sweet to have them," Marjorie said. "People who were walking by stopped and saw the cupcakes and also stayed to hear what we had to say."

Three of the festival’s early supporters also spoke at the gathering: Artistic Director Marek Zebrowski, Cass Winery owner Steve Cass, and Joel Peterson, whose grandmother helped support the original festival in the 1990s. Their reflections on the festival’s 2006 revival drew warm applause before the high school musicians closed with another performance and the crowd sang

That evening, the Cuesta Concord Chorus performed at St. Rose Catholic Church, presenting selections from their upcoming holiday program. Before the concert, a local winery offered complimentary tastings outdoors.

"They do a beautiful program," said Marjorie. "[It was] a lot of the songs that they're [Cuesta Concord Chorus] going to be singing at their Christmas program the first week of December."

Friday night featured an accordion-violin duo, Karolina Mikołajczyk (violin) and Iwo Jedinecki (accordion), whose highenergy concert quickly became a favorite among festivalgoers. Their musical chemistry, Marjorie said, captivated the nearly full Park Ballroom.

"We had an accordion and a violinist duo that were absolutely phenomenal," Marjorie recounted. "The way he looked at her when she played was just so

sweet and so magical."

One of the festival’s most anticipated events, the Youth Piano Competition Winners Recital, filled all available seats Saturday afternoon. Though free, the recital required advance reservations due to its popularity.

"That was a sold-out crowd," Marjorie said. "The young people that played were absolutely phenomenal."

That evening, the 2025 Gala Artist Adam Żukiewicz, who originally was scheduled to perform at the festival in 2020, played for an enthusiastic crowd at the Park Ballroom. The pianist had previously performed for Paso Robles audiences remotely during the pandemic, but this year marked his long-awaited in-person appearance.

The festival concluded Sunday morning with an intimate patrons’ concert at Libretto, featuring two Central Coast students, Ellen and Sela, who took part in the

Paderewski Cultural Exchange Program in Poland earlier this year. One of the young musicians, Marjorie noted, had just won the senior division of the festival’s 2025 youth competition. The two performed an encore four-hands piece before guests enjoyed a celebratory brunch.

As the festival looks ahead, organizers are considering expanding its programming, including the possibility of launching a collegiate-level competition.

Marjorie added that the festival remains grateful for its longstanding partnership with the Park Ballroom, even if transporting a grand piano into the historic space requires some creativity.

"This was a great, a great year. I think we were all very, very pleased with the success," Marjorie said.

41st annual T hanksgiving for Paso Robles serves neighbors

ow in its 41st year, Thanksgiving for Paso Robles continued its mission of bringing the community together for a free, home-cooked holiday meal served with kindness, dignity, and fellowship. More than 1,500 residents took a plate during this year’s celebration, held Thursday, November 27, at the Centennial Park Activity Center.

Guests filled the dining room to enjoy a traditional sit-down Thanksgiving feast, including turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables, and all the trimmings. A to-go service followed, helping ensure that no one in the community spent the holiday without a warm meal.

The annual dinner is entirely volunteerdriven, supported by hundreds of local residents, families, churches, students, and businesses who donate time, money, and supplies to keep the tradition going.

Volunteer David Kudija, said this year’s turnout reflected the community’s ongoing need and strong spirit of support.

“It's going well. Um, we have more people than normal, because things have been difficult,” he told Paso Robles Press Magazine during the event. Despite the high turnout, the kitchen kept pace. “We're hoping our food holds out … so far it has been.”

David said he took time this year to personally sit among guests.

“For the first time this year, I've sat down with a group that is eating and I'm getting to know from the ground level how people enjoy it,” he said. “I met a very nice family.”

Behind the scenes, it takes roughly 230 volunteers throughout Thanksgiving week to prepare, serve, deliver, and clean up. Planning begins in August, when the event’s steering committee starts meeting every two weeks to organize logistics and fundraising.

“We have a steering committee that starts meeting in August,” David explained. “We meet every two weeks to raise funds and do all the planning for this. We are looking for some people to join us on the steering committee.”

While the sit-down meal remains the heart of the event, the demand for delivered meals has grown significantly since the pandemic.

In 2020, the dinner shifted to a drive-through format, and many community members have continued to prefer eating at home.

“I think so many people loved the thought of picking it up here and having it at home that our requests for meal deliveries have skyrocketed,” David said. Even so, organizers continue encouraging residents to gather in person. “We're trying to get people to come here and enjoy dinner as a community with us. Thanksgiving's community, and that's what we try to promote.”

As with every year, the team faced challenges.

Food costs continue to rise, and ensuring enough supplies for both the sit-down meal and deliveries requires careful coordination.

“Every year our bills are higher,” David noted, though he added, “We believe we have them covered this year.”

Despite careful planning, a few items ran short during service.

“While we have run out of yams and dressing, we quickly went to the market to buy more,” he said.

The event’s reach extends beyond Centennial Park. Thanksgiving for Paso Robles also prepares 140 meals for ECHO Paso Robles, a partnership that has continued for four years.

“In addition to our dinner here, we take 140 meals to ECHO in Paso Robles,” David said.

Before that arrangement, the group shared leftovers with the shelter, but now ECHO asked the committee to sponsor its full Thanksgiving meal.

Any remaining food is sent to other local nonprofits or community partners.

For David, the goal is simple: to nurture community through generosity.

“Think community. If everyone would roll up their sleeves a little further and help their fellow man, the world would be a better place,” he said.

appy New Year! The start of a new year usually comes with resolutions to eat healthier and work out more. What better way to start the new year off right than with a haul of fresh produce from the farmer’s market? Enjoying fruits and veggies at their peak gives you an important nutrient boost this time of year. Walking around the farmer’s market is also great exercise!

One of the biggest complaints I hear from everyone is that it’s expensive to eat healthy. Everything is expensive right now, but healthy eating doesn’t have to be. Planning meals around in-season fresh produce is one of the easiest ways to save on groceries. Our farmer’s markets have beautiful, fresh produce, meats, oils, and more that are much better value than what you can get at the store. Our favorite budget-friendly veggies this time of year are cabbage and potatoes. Right now, cabbage is in season and is packed with vitamins to keep you healthy this season.

Cabbage is high in fiber which means it will help with digestion and help you to lose weight if that’s a new year’s resolution. Cabbage goes into a lot of dishes here because it cooks easily and pairs well with any other veggies. I always have some bacon in the fridge so I can make bacon, cabbage, and potatoes in a pinch. The cabbage soup recipe below is one of my favorites and I never make it the same way twice.

Feel free to add in other veggies and any herbs you have on hand. It’s also delicious with some bacon added in.

One of my favorite ways to stay healthy through the cold season is to make big batches of soup every week. I usually make the soup Sunday night and then fill up mason jars with the leftovers. I take a mason jar, a slice of sourdough bread, and some persimmons or oranges with me to work for lunch.

Not only is it super simple, but I love not stressing over what I’m eating for lunch every day because it’s all set! Also, it is nice to bring an extra jar in case a coworker is in need.

Another great seasonal treat is citrus! Citrus fruits are known to have a high nutritional density, which is beneficial for speedy healing from illness. Not only do they help boost your immune system, but they have very few calories which makes them a nutritious snack choice to supports weight loss goals. I add lemon and orange zest to many dishes and love some lemon juice in my hot tea in the morning. Oranges and persimmons are delicious to snack on and we have to best ones grown at so many local farms! Be sure to save the peels and make your own cleaning spray!

January’s bounty Cabbage Soup Ingredients: • 1 head of cabbage chopped • 2 cloves of garlic chopped • 2 leeks chopped • 1 yellow onion chopped • 2 medium carrots peeled and chopped • 4 celery stalks cut into slices

Instructions: 1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt the butter.

2. Add chopped garlic, onions, and leeks and cook for about 5 minutes until soft and translucent, stirring occasionally.

3. Add chopped carrots and celery and cook for another 3 minutes.

4. Add cubed potatoes and chopped cabbage. Pour broth in.

5. Cover the soup and cook for about 20-25 minutes until all the vegetables are cooked through.

6. Check for seasoning and add salt and pepper to taste.

7. Add dill and mix well.

8. Serve and enjoy! Save leftovers in mason jars for an easy to-go lunch!

Citrus Cleaning Spray Ingredients: • Orange, lemon, or other citrus peels

• Mason jar • White vinegar • Water

Instructions: 1. Collect citrus peels (can be a mix) in a jar and keep in the fridge until it’s full.

2. Pour enough vinegar into the jar to cover the peels 3. Set the jar in a cupboard for at least two weeks 4. After two weeks, strain the vinegar into a bowl. Toss the peels.

5. Dilute vinegar solution with an equal amount of water and add to a spray bottle.

6. Use on countertops, glass, and more but avoid wood, marble and granite as it is quite acidic

Oak Leaf • Turkey Event Trot

The Paso Robles Youth Wrestling Club celebrated a major milestone on Thanksgiving morning as its 20th Annual Turkey Trot: Turkeymania drew the largest crowd in the event’s history. More than 80 runners turned out in full Hulk Hogan flair to support Paso Robles High School Wrestling.

The festive fundraiser kicked off Thursday, November 27, with the start of the 10K, 5K, and Family Fun Run at 8 a.m. in the Food 4 Less parking lot on Creston Road.

Proceeds benefited the Paso Robles Youth Wrestling Club, a nonprofit supporting the high school’s wrestling program. This year’s 10K winners included Ezekiel Lopez (Elementary, 59:00), Brian Cruz (High School, 34:20), Daniel Giroux (Open, 40:38), and Jeff Fell (60+ Masters, 51:23). Top men’s finishers were Joey Flora (34:15), Barry Main (36:23), and Kevin Wof (36:50), while women’s leaders were Olivia Mitchell (45:31), Imuri Pacheco (46:05), and Alison Borgsmiller (47:00).

First-place medals were awarded in each division.

A lively Hulkster Costume Contest honored the late Hulk Hogan, inspiring runners to don blonde wigs and strike wrestling poses. The first 100 finishers also received limited-edition Turkeymania T-shirts, adding to the excitement and turnout. Paso Robles High School senior wrestler Pedro Coronado shared his gratitude for his coaches, teammates, teachers, friends, and family who continue to support his journey.

Oak Leaf • Happy Event Holidays!

Downtown Paso Robles kicked off the holiday season in festive style with a series of beloved community events that brought lights, music, and old-fashioned cheer to the city — each building on the last as December unfolded.

The celebrations began Friday, November 28, with the 39th Annual Downtown Lighting Ceremony in City Park. Families gathered at the bandstand to sing holiday carols alongside Mrs. Santa Claus and local officials. Then, the giant switch was flipped, illuminating the park and drawing cheers from the crowd. City leaders reflected on the event’s community spirit, while attendees enjoyed new lighted trees, updated displays, added photo spots, and warm drinks from The Human Bean. The glowing park once again became a seasonal destination for visitors planning holiday trips around the display.

Holiday excitement continued Saturday, December 6, with the 64th Annual Christmas Light Parade, themed “Christmas Lights, Winter Nights.” Thousands lined the streets as bands, floats, horses, and decorated vehicles made their way through downtown. The parade marked Santa Claus’s official arrival in Paso Robles, followed by his move to the Holiday House in City Park for nightly visits. Community groups, schools, nonprofits, and businesses were recognized with awards, highlighting the creativity and pride woven throughout the parade.

The season culminated on Saturday, December 13, with the 39th Annual Vine Street Victorian Christmas Showcase. Stretching from 8th to 20th streets, the historic neighborhood transformed into a scene from the past with thousands of lights, carolers, Santa, a living nativity, cookies, cider, and the evergrumpy Ebenezer Scrooge. Nearly four decades on, the showcase remains a heartfelt gift from the Vine Street neighborhood to the wider community, closing the holiday season with timeless charm and togetherness.
