Fully decodable books for age 7+ 20–25
The children love the Little Wandle mnemonics and illustrations and we have seen such fantastic results in Reception since our Little Wandle launch in September 2021. Our results improved by 40% in the first half term alone!
Leadership and Learning Consultant, Elmhurst School
Teachers and pupils are really enjoying the decodable books that are used for reading practice. The training videos online have been very useful and the guidance on the last page of each book is great to refer to before and during the reads. The books provide a good balance of fiction and non-fiction as well as a variety of genres to cater for many interests. When matched to the abilities within the group, pupils are able to decode and are continually becoming more confident in their own segmenting, blending and reading.
Early English and Phonics Lead, St. Mary’s C of E Primary School
We couldn’t have done as well without the Little Wandle training and the resources. Having all the books makes teaching our reading so much easier. Here is a quote from our recent Brampton Ofsted – November 2021: ‘All staff have received the training they need to teach children to read. They deliver phonics teaching well. Children learn to read as soon as they start school in Reception. They quickly develop the phonic knowledge they need to tackle new and unfamiliar words. Pupils take home appropriate books that they can read. These books match the sounds pupils know.
Executive Headteacher, Brampton C of E VC Primary School and Ringsfield Church of England Primary School

Books and resources which support every child as they learn to read
Choose from a range of matched resources produced by Big Cat for Little Wandle
Including cards, wall friezes, charts and grapheme mats – and fantastic Big Cat fiction and non-fiction books matched to the Little Wandle progression.
“Little Wandle has dramatically enhanced our phonics provision and it is no doubt that this is due to the high quality of both the SSP and the Big Cat resources. Pupils absolutely can’t wait to open their new books and review phoneme cards and teachers find the high-quality resources have had a significantly positive impact on pupil progress.”
Every child can see themselves represented in Big Cat books
We aim to give visibility and representation to all our readers by featuring a range of lived experiences. Explore stories that feature characters in non-traditional family structures, reflect various ethnic and social backgrounds, and champion physical inclusivity. We highlight underrepresented areas such as neurodiversity and empowering female role models, alongside fiction and non-fiction that celebrates cultures and experiences from around the globe.
To ensure authenticity, we collaborate with a wide network of diverse authors, illustrators, charity partners, and experts. Our goal is for every reader to feel seen, accepted, and connected to the stories we share.

Little Wandle SEND Programme
Learning to read matters for every child or young person, regardless of their starting points or learning difficulties. This is why Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised offers a number of pathways, enabling schools to create a suitable route to reading for every child.
Little Wandle SEND is a complete programme that mirrors the core Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics programme but with adaptations and support in place to make it possible for schools, Special Schools and providers to meet the needs of all their learners. It has been trialled with children who have a wide range of special educational needs, and created to help them learn to read with the right level of challenge for each child, using the graduated approach if needed.
Large Sensory Grapheme Cards
Embossed to give sensory feedback, these robust cards can be used with individuals, groups of children, or with the whole class.
Illustrated Grapheme Cards
Cards featuring 40 core Phase 5 graphemes, chosen for the Little Wandle SEND programme. Developed with advice from Special Schools and illustrated to aid understanding and memory.
o"We love the way that Little Wandle fits with our established approach to teaching early reading and phonics to children working from the earliest developmental levels to textliterate decoders. The clear structure and sequenced approach allows us to target wellmatched teaching to individuals and groups to support their progress."
Willow Dene Special School
Large Word Cards
These cards support the teaching of the Little Wandle SEND programme. They provide children with the opportunity to practise reading words at their level and develop fluency.
Contains 564 words and tricky words, supplied as individual cards and organised by phase for ease of use
Grapheme Mats
A pack of 10 double-sided and laminated A3 grapheme mats that provide a quick reference for all the graphemes taught in the SEND programme at Phases 2, 3 and 5.

Now with Fluency Levels 11–15 for pupils in Year 4 and above
Little Wandle Fluency is for children who have completed Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised or another systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) programme and are secure at reading that programme's final level of books.
Little Wandle's 'by schools for schools' approach means that teachers have been integral to the development of Little Wandle Fluency.
Little Wandle Fluency aims for children to become readers who can read with prosody and understanding. It supports them to lift meaning from the text, build their identity as a reader and develop a lifelong love of reading.
Little Wandle Fluency teaches all aspects of reading using vibrant, diverse and engaging chapter books created by contemporary authors and illustrators. Each book has been carefully devised to support children to become confident, fluent and motivated readers as they move through Years 2–4 and beyond.
“Looking at the children's reading skills and how they are using expression, rhythm and pace has been really useful. Amazing.”
Burley and Woodhead Primary School, West Yorkshire
The importance of reading fluency
The DfE Reading framework identifies the importance of explicitly teaching fluency to ensure that children are reading with accuracy, automaticity, understanding and expression. Children should practise reading with a wide range of books.
Research shows that students who develop strong reading fluency in their early years are more likely to excel in school and maintain higher levels of confidence and wellbeing. Reading fluently also improves children’s comprehension, vocabulary, empathy and critical thinking skills.
Fluency Levels
The programme consists of 15 Fluency Levels for children to work their way through, with chapter books ranging from 80 pages (Levels 1 to 5) to 112 pages (Levels 11 to 15). Each book contains six chapters of equal length, designed so that every chapter takes 10 minutes to read aloud. As children progress, the language becomes more sophisticated, and the word count increases, requiring a gradual improvement in reading speed from 60 to 150 words per minute.
Bo clambered up onto the edge of the tub and pumped her fist in the air. “We did it!” she cried, proudly.
Pages from Bo and Baa-Bara, Fluency 6
Just as the celebration was in full swing, Bo heard a different sound – angry voices. She turned around to see several scowling adults marching towards them. At the front was Mr Scratton. “What on earth is all this?!” he boomed.
Bo gulped. “We’re ... we’re saving water!” she explained, her voice trembling. “For the plants in the square … to win the award.”
Saturday morning
Dear Diary,
Fuming, Mr Scratton replied, “In case you hadn’t noticed, the whole town is now covered in piles of dirt, trails of grit and sludgy footprints. You’ve made things worse, not better!”
The royal family asked if I had any experience with large gardens and old buildings. I told them that I had grown enchanted forests near castles before. They were very pleased and wanted to know more, but I said that was a secret. I’m no blabbermouth. I am very professional like that.
It’s so wonderful to be out in the fresh air once again, feeling the wind in my cobwebs. I have so many ideas to make their inferior garden truly magical. Even better than the gardens I bewitched for Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty.
