37–39 Teachers and pupils are really enjoying the decodable books that are used for reading practice. The training videos online have been very useful and the guidance on the last page of each book is great to refer to before and during the reads. The books provide a good balance of fiction and non-fiction as well as a variety of genres to cater for many interests. When matched to the abilities within the group, pupils are able to decode and are continually becoming more confident in their own segmenting, blending and reading. Teach and practise: Phase 3 and 4 read new words Notes Teach: New word

• For each word: ◦ Ask the children to sound-talk each grapheme and then blend to read the word aloud. ◦ Point to each grapheme and then sweep beneath the word to signal blending. ◦ Read the word together. ◦ Give a contextualising sentence or definition for the word, if needed. Use the example definitions and sentences on the weekly grid, if needed.

• Use the sound button side of the word cards because these are new words for the children. • Use minimal language to ensure the children can focus on the reading of the words. • Pointing to the digraphs should be pacey. • When reading the words, ensure lots of practice by asking all the children, then individuals/rows of children, and then all the children again, to read the words.

• Shufﬂe the cards. • Tell the children to read the words on the cards without sounding out. • Show each card and sweep beneath the word to signal blending. • Ensure there is enough time for the children to read each word. • Repeat.

• Watch the children carefully to ensure they are all blending in their heads. (Children will often mouth the sounds to themselves at this stage.) • Encourage the children to indicate – with a silent gesture (e.g. nodding their head, thumbs up) – when they are ready to blend.

Quick review

Teach and practise: Read a tricky word • Show the tricky word on a card. • Read the decodable parts of the word. Point to the ‘tricky bit’ and tell the children the sound that this grapheme makes. • Model reading the word. • Ask the children to read the word a few times independently.

• Focus on the words with long vowels on pages 6 and 7. Ask the children which words have the /ee/ sound (sees, Eek), which has the long /er/ sound (Nipper) and which has the long /ar/ sound. Read 2: Prosody

• Choose two double page spreads and model reading with expression to the children. Ask the children to have a go at reading the same pages with expression. • Show the children how you read sentences with exclamation marks with extra emphasis and enthusiasm.

Read 3: Comprehension

• Turn to pages 14 and 15 and ask the children if this shows the pool at the beginning or end of the story. Can the children remember what happened in the story and how the pool changed? Encourage them to retell the story. • For every question ask the children how they know the answer. Ask: • On pages 2 to 3, who isn’t very happy, and why? (Nipper, because there is too much litter in her rock pool) • On page 7, what is the sharp thing? (Gull’s beak) • On pages 8 to 9, why is Gull harmless? (e.g. he doesn’t want to hurt Nipper, he has just brought a bucket to help) • What sort of book is this – a story or non-fiction? Why do you think this? (e.g. a story because it has illustrations and not photos; a story because the animals are talking)

Little Wandle's 'by schools for schools' approach means that teachers have been integral to the development of Little Wandle Fluency. Little Wandle Fluency aims for children to become readers who can read with prosody and understanding. It supports them to lift meaning from the text, build their identity as a reader and develop a lifelong love of reading. Little Wandle Fluency teaches all aspects of reading using vibrant, diverse and engaging chapter books created by contemporary authors and illustrators. Each book has been carefully devised to support children to become confident, fluent and motivated readers as they move through Years 2–4 and beyond.

The importance of reading fluency The DfE Reading framework identifies the importance of explicitly teaching fluency to ensure that children are reading with accuracy, automaticity, understanding and expression. Children should practise reading with a wide range of books. Research shows that students who develop strong reading fluency in their early years are more likely to excel in school and maintain higher levels of confidence and wellbeing. Reading fluently also improves children’s comprehension, vocabulary, empathy and critical thinking skills.

The programme consists of 15 Fluency Levels for children to work their way through, with chapter books ranging from 80 pages (Levels 1 to 5), 96 pages (Levels 6–10), to 112 pages (Levels 11 to 15). Each book contains six chapters of equal length, designed so that

every chapter takes 10 minutes to read aloud. As children progress, the language becomes more sophisticated, and the word count increases, requiring a gradual improvement in reading speed from 60 to 150 words per minute.

‘Ready to write’ checklist: the four Ps s

Pencil grip Children need to learn how to hold their pencil correctly from the outset, as grip affects the ﬂow, speed and overall quality of handwriting. Without a proper grip, children’s hands can tire more quickly, their writing can become harder to read and they may struggle to write for extended periods – an essential skill as they progress through school.

It is important to establish routines for getting ready for handwriting lessons. The routines of warming up ﬁngers, having the correct posture and holding the pencil correctly so that children are ready to write are key. These routines need to be a common policy in the school, and have clear expectations that are established right from the start and reinforced so that they become embedded and automatic.

Young children need to develop the muscles in their hands to build the strength required for a proper pencil grip. For some, this will take longer and require additional practice. Children initially start to hold the pencil within their ﬁst (age 1–1.5 years), progress to holding the pencil shaft with all their ﬁngers (2–3 years) and then move on to a static, then dynamic tripod grasp. Children typically progress through a series of grasp patterns before developing a tripod grip.

The Little Wandle ‘Ready to write’ checklist ensures children are well prepared to start handwriting with conﬁdence and control. The children are taught and reminded of four elements prior to starting their handwriting lesson.

Posture Pencil grip Paper position Pressure Posture If children have a poor posture when writing, it can result in pain and fatigue, causing poor presentation, handwriting that is difficult to read, slow speed and lack of motivation to write. By modelling, monitoring and reinforcing good posture from the beginning, poor habits can be prevented from developing and children can be supported in building the stamina and speed needed for ﬂuent writing. •

Feet are ﬂat on the ﬂoor or supported on a wide, stable raised surface.

•

Knees form a 90 degrees angle, with about two ﬁngers’ space behind the knees to prevent pressure on the lower thighs.

•

Hips are positioned at approximately 90 degrees, with the back fully supported by the chair.

•

Seat position with the back against the chair maintaining a small gap (about the width of a ﬁst) between the stomach and the table, so there is sufficient space to breathe comfortably.

•

Table and chair height should allow the forearms to rest comfortably on the surface – without leaning forward (too low) or raising the shoulders (too high).

•

Work surface must be clean, smooth and clear of clutter to promote proper hand and arm placement and allow arms to move freely to write.

The tripod grip is typically the easiest for children to learn. It can be modelled by showing how to pinch the pencil between the ball of the thumb and index finger – about a finger’s width from the pencil tip – while resting the middle finger underneath for support, and the other fingers tucked into the hand. Using a small sticker to mark the correct grip position can be a helpful visual aid. The ideal location of the fingers is about 3cm from the pencil tip. For children who find pencil grip challenging, timely intervention and additional practice are essential to prevent the development of incorrect habits. See the ‘Pencil grip’ video on the Little Wandle website. For children who continue to have difficulty with fine and gross motor skills, adaptive equipment can used to support their development. Writing implements and equipment •

Pencils are an ideal tool for introducing letter formation as they provide a smooth glide across the page helping young children develop control during the complex process of learning to write. Some children may beneﬁt from using thicker, triangular pencils to support the development of a tripod grip.

•

However, the size of the pencil should be appropriate for the child’s hand. While some children may initially ﬁnd a chunkier pencil easier to grip, as they develop pencil control, it’s important to ensure the pencil is not too large, as this can hinder comfort and proper grip development.

•

There are pencil grips commercially available that promote a good tripod position. An elastic band placed at the tip of the pencil will prevent the ﬁngers from slipping forwards onto the point.
