With my well known love of history, some may think I am prejudiced when I say, “The greatest lessons we can learn, come from study of a history book.” But if Christians think a moment, they would have to agree. The Bible is the Word of God, and as such completely accurate making it a unique book of history. The Bible does tell of the future, speaking of Christ’s return (1 Thess. 4:13-18), the destruction of this world (2 Peter 3:1013) Judgment Day (2 Cor. 5:10), and eternal Heaven and eternal Hell (Matt. 25:46). But the Bible is also a great book of history, speaking of events from the founding of this world (Gen. 1:1) and for the thousands of years since. The lesson of history it teaches is one of man’s sin and God’s righteousness, one of men going away from God and God’s seeking to bring them back (John 3:16). God’s requirement of a blood sacrifice under the Patriarchal Law (law of the fathers) and the Law of Moses looked forward to the great sacrifice God would make of His Son to save men that would become obedient to Him (Heb. 9:13-14).

This sacrifice was accomplished by Christ’s death on the cross. Today, upon the first day of the week, Christians look back to that sacrifice in history, as they partake of the Lord’s Supper, understanding that it is where God dealt with their sins (1 Cor. 11:23-26). While I do prefer to read and study history over all other non-Bible books, my favorite book, the Bible itself, is one of history too. The apostle Paul wrote of those that would be saved as ones that had a “love of truth” in 2 Thess. 2:10. God’s Word is truth and Christians as they grow in maturity will develop a love for it. At each assembly and in each class, you will find we seek to help those in attendance to grow in their knowledge and “love of truth.” We would appreciate a visit from you in each and every one of our assemblies. Will we see you this week?
