Friends of George and City of George West honors former council members Contributed information

GEORGE WEST – The citizen group, Friends of George, and the City of George West held an appreciation potluck Tuesday evening, Sept. 27, to honor the efforts of former Mayor Dickie Person and former council members Josie Chapline and Colton Shannon. Mayor Andy Garza, along with council member Pat Clifton and City Manager Eddie Houlihan presented Dickie Person with a plaque and the keys to the city for “setting the city on the path to a new direction.” They also presented Person and Chapline with special proclamations and Texas flags that were flown over the capital in honor of their achievements. Shannon was given the same awards earlier in the year. John Walker, the primary spokesperson for Friends of George, recognized the trio for their “courageous service” to the George West Community. Walker also praised Person for his perseverance as mayor during his term. Person was unable to complete his full mayoral term due to his diagnosis of cancer immediately following his appointment in May 2015. Walker recognized Chapline for serving The

on the council through a serious illness. At one point, Walker spoke about Chapline working through a council meeting with a 102-degree temperature only to be hospitalized immediately afterward. Walker then went on to praise Shannon for stepping up to serve on the council despite being merely 24 years old at the time. Walker said, “We will never know what you had to endure during those years you were on the council.” Person, Chapline and Shannon were instrumental in removing the prior city manager, city secretary, municipal court judge, police chief and public works director. The city attorney also resigned in protest to the council’s actions. Subsequent to the firings, the Attorney General’s Office of Criminal Investigation Division launched an investigation of possible criminal misconduct at city hall. The investigation is ongoing.

editor Saint vs. sinner Editor:

Sometimes some people make some things so difficult, you have to wonder how someone could believe somebody’s story coming from somewhere other than the Bible. To believe that people on earth are not saints until they get to heaven, you have to disbelieve or do away with many verses of scripture. How is it possible to devise a system about sainthood apart from and contrary to God’s word? Will you believe man’s word or the Holy Bible? Psalm 116:15, (KJV) “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” To help you in your search for truth, here are some terms akin to the words saint/sinner: righteous/ unrighteous, everlasting life/condemnation, the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus/the law of sin and death, born again/second death, sow to the spirit/ sow to the flesh, good fruit/evil fruit, wheat/tares, believing/faithless. If you take time to study these opposites, it will change your life for the better forever. Dear reader, please take note that what God said has been under attack since the garden of Eden. The devil has not changed. He will deny God’s word, and override it with the vain tradition of men. Believe that our loving God gave His holy words to tell sinners about his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who is the only one who can forgive you and make you a new creature with different desires. If you are a servant of sin, you can become a servant of Jesus Christ. Why remain a sinner when God can make you a saint now? Respectfully submitted, Michael Sucec George West The Progress welcomes letters to the editor.
