LOC brings awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month

Contributed information

LIVE OAK COUNTY – Last week, Live Oak County Judge Jim Huff declared that April would be designated Child Abuse Prevention Month. To raise awareness for this cause of prevention, Pinwheels for Prevention was formed and sponsored by Live Oak County Child Welfare Inc. This group planted 110 pinwheels in the courtyard of the George West courthouse and in the lawn in front of Three Rivers City Hall, as well as the 15 planted in Tilden, to represent the number of child abuse and neglect cases

that were investigated in 2015. “Shining in the sun, the pinwheels represent a bright future for our children who have received the help they so desperately needed,” said Child Welfare board members. “We want all children to live in a stable, loving and stimulating environments, at home, in school and in the community.” The proclamation reads that more than 100 Texas children lost their lives in 2015 because of child abuse. A grand opening was held at Broken Duckfeet Restaurant in George West on Saturday, April 9. The Broken Duckfeet Band out of New Braunfels was on hand to keep things lively. Museum posts 1889 articles, 1920 photos and chases a mystery In the previous week, I have finished the Facebook newspaper article postings for 1889 Live Oak County as collected to date. More on that will follow. I have posted about 30 additional photographs from the Buddy Jones family album (c1920) to include some of the Jones family home, two family groupings from Three Rivers, and some Cokers, and a couple of WWI shots of Buddy’s dad and uncle in uniform. There will be some more interesting photographs to come so stay tuned to the page. Also this week I have posted an album to contain articles gathered on a question posted to the Bee County Historical Society page. Family members of Joshua M. Hickman were seeking information on the death of their greatgreat-grandfather at the Nations Hotel in Beeville. This “Nations” are the same family that first ran a hotel in Oakville, but later moved to Beeville. The family had a short death notice from some

paper and a funeral notice. They were seeking additional information and I was able to find a much more detailed death notice in the Galveston paper for July 28, 1895. Museum Notes By Kevin Mackey

“Mortuary J.M. Hickman. Beeville, Bee Co., Tex., July 25. - Mr. J. M. Hickman, formerly of Kentucky, died here this afternoon, after a lingering illness. He is said to have a married sister living near Taylor, Tex. One of his sons was educated at Ann Arbor, Mich., and another at West Point. Deceased had persistently refused to give any information as to the names and whereabouts of his relations or to allow them to be notified of his condition.

“Beeville, Bee Co., Tex., July 26. - Major Hickman, the commercial traveler who died here yesterday at the Nations Hotel, was buried in the public cemetery this morning.” “The commercial traveler” in the noticed referred to his business as a traveling salesman and maybe specifically to his connection to the “Commercial Traveler” insurance company. Previous articles indicated that Mr. Hickman had been from Waco, Texas. The real mystery begins when I also found the “deceased” kept appearing in the states’ newspapers at various hotels and events related to his company and at times with his wife, still from Waco, for years after his death. So far, records consulted don’t show him buried in Beeville, but that would not be too unusual as no complete marker census of the Evergreen Cemetery has been completed and records of burials there are, as in many cemeteries, incomplete. Helpful to the mystery would be to know if the

Bee County Justice of the Peace Inquest book shows an inquest at the Nations Hotel for a Hickman on that date. One of the family members is an Ohio reporter and he is chasing down some new leads. He already knew of the married sister in Taylor and her prominent family. Amongst the articles that completed the postings for 1889 LOC is one on the death of a highly regarded and early Texan, James M. Grover, son-inlaw to empresario James McGloin. The article appearing in the Dec. 17, 1889, Galveston Daily News copied the one of the Corpus Christi Caller.

It is as follows: “The Corpus Christi Caller chronicles the death, at his residence, Live Oak County, Tex., on the 4th day of December, 1889, of Jas. M. Grover of cancer in the 67th year of his age, and says: “The deceased was one of the best known and most respected citizens of the McMullen and McGloin colony. He was born at Sacketts Harbor, N.Y. The family moved to Ohio in his infancy, and afterward he and his father and brother, D.C. Grover, came to Texas in 1839. He married Marry Ann, daughter

of the empresario James McGloin, and after her death married Catharine Houlsham, by whom he leaves a numerous family fairly provided for. He has two brothers surviving him in Texas - G.W. Grover of Galveston and D.C. Grover of McMullen County, and two sisters, Belle L. Grover of Victoria and Frances Warner Ely Grover of Lavaca County, all well known and highly esteemed.” Follow us on Facebook or drop by the museum to get your dose of South Texas history. Bring us a mystery or help us with someone else’s to share in the fun of history.

I am Pat Clifton. I am running as a candidate for Place #3 on the George West City Council. The election is on Saturday, May 7. Early voting begins on April 25. My husband, Lloyd, and I have been married for almost 46 years. We both have lived most of our lives in George West. I had two sets of great-grandparents and Lloyd had a set of grandparents who settled in this area in the earliest days of GW. We chose to raise our three children, Anna, Sara and Rusty, in our hometown. We have six grandchildren. We have lived in the same house for the past 38 years. George West has been the best hometown for my family. With strong leadership, it will continue to be the best hometown for our future generations, too!

I retired almost three years ago from GWISD as the elementary school secretary. I worked for the school district for 27 years. I loved being a part of a great team that made positive impacts in children and their families’ lives. When I retired, I knew that I wanted to commit my time to volunteering and serving in three specific areas. The first was to serve God and my church family. The second was to give my time and support to our children and grandchildren. The third was to serve as a volunteer with my time and effort for my hometown. The first two areas were easy and rewarding. The third area has been quite a challenge! Throughout the years, I have addressed the city council many times. The council was always responsive and positive! For the past few years, I have actively attended the city council meetings and I know that I can make a positive difference. The new elected council has progressed forward with the many tedious challenges that were necessary to improve the city’s financial accountability. The new bookkeeping system was so desperately needed. The city now has a system that is both professional and accurate! It can help track the true cost of the city services and help create a more accurate budget for the future of GW. Unfortunately, there have been many more “invisible” projects (such as water leaks, emergency sewer plant repairs and the daily city management) that urgently needed attention. This past year, an interim city manager, interim police chief, interim public works director, city attorney and municipal judge were hired. On April 4, Eddie Houlihan, the new city manager was hired. The city can now move forward with addressing the more “visible” projects such as the “cabanas” (trailer houses) and infrastructure improvements such as the waterlines, sewer lines, road repair, parks, and renovating the sewer treatment plant to Texas Community Environment Quality (TCEQ). I have the leadership skills that can help address the immediate problems and to develop a master plan to improve the quality of the infrastructure of GW and the future generations! Please continue in your support of the city council. I want to serve as an integral part of a team that helps guide our hometown to a brighter future! Your vote and voice would be greatly appreciated! Pol. adv. paid for by Patricia Johnson Clifton, PO Box 525, George West, TX 78022
